Modification in disease-sensibility of forest plants by herbicide treatment. II. Laboratory studies on Lophodermium pinastri. The effect of TOP-KH (2, 4, 5-T) and Dichlobenil on the growth of Lophodermium pinastri in culture was studied in the laboratory. The effect of aqueous solutions of TOP-KH on germination of Lophodermium spores was also tested. Assessments were also made of the number of apothecia produced on herbicide-treated plants, their size and the number of spores emitted. A final discussion of results is given.  相似文献

Buffering capacity and pH values of extracts of pine needles varied with age in the course of the ontogeny of needles. Significant differences between a resistant and a susceptible pine clone group in relation to resistance against Lophodermium pinastri could be shown in autumn and winter. Also the variability of the parasite influences the host-parasite interaction as shown by alteration of pH values by 3 L. pinastri strains in cultural trials on needle extract medium.  相似文献

Conidia of Gremmeniella abietina infected and caused disease symptoms in annual shoots of both Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and Norway spruce (Picea abies) seedlings. In Norway spruce shoots the infection remained largely latent, with only a few seedlings showing symptoms. Mycelial growth inside the shoots was faster in Scots pine than in Norway spruce and was favoured by low temperature in both hosts. The shoots of Norway spruce seedlings had higher endophyte populations than those of Scots pine, and the populations were decreased by low temperatures. Reductions in the normal epiphytic or endophytic flora by acid mist treatments seemed to favour the development of G. abietina.  相似文献

The formation and maturing of the large tree type Gremmeniella abietina var. abietina fruiting bodies and their sporulation were investigated for 3 years on Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) in northern Finland. This was done by monthly assessment of shoots in the field and in the laboratory. Infection caused by G. abietina var. abietina was dated on Scots pine by monthly covering with pollination bags and exposing branches during the growing season. Pycnidia appeared between August and September, 1 year after infection, and they started to release conidia between late June and early July, 2 years after infection. Fresh pycnidia and microconidia were formed during the following August and September in the infected shoots. The causal large tree type of G. abietina var. abietina did not produce apothecia on branches within 3 years of infection. Monthly covering and exposing branches showed that infection took place mainly between June and July.  相似文献

Lophodermium seditiosum is a serious needle pathogen on pine, particularly in nurseries, and there is a need to detect the pathogen during its latent phase. The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions of the rDNA of L. seditiosum and L. pinastri were amplified with universal primers and sequenced. Sequence comparisons of the two species allowed the design of species‐specific primers for the ITS regions. The primers were between 18 and 24 bp long with a minimum of 3 bp differences between the species. These primer pairs did not give any amplification of DNA from any other of the examined fungal species or from healthy Pinus sylvestris needles. It was also possible to identify either L. seditiosum or L. pinastri in infected needles with and without signs of infection using these primer pairs. The method was found to be very useful for detection of latent infections of L. seditiosum in P. sylvestris needles in nurseries.  相似文献

Infection patterns in Scots pine plantations by Armillariella mellea (Vahl.) Karst. Macro- and microscopic analyses of Scots pine root systems in plantations infected by Armillariella mellea are described. Forms of infection and states of penetration are determined and correlated with resistance reactions. Variation of Armillariella attack is discussed in connection with the variation within the population of the host plants and parasites.  相似文献

In this study, the effect of pine mistletoe (Viscum album subsp. austriacum) on basal area increment of Crimean pine and Scots pine was investigated. Dendrochronological data were collected from 223 (71 uninfected and 152 infected) Crimean pines and 195 (77 uninfected and 118 infected) Scots pines located in Kastamonu province of Turkey in 2014. Infected sample trees were classified as light, moderate or severe infection levels. Growth trends and basal area increment loses were compared between uninfected and infected trees for the periods of the last 10, 20 and 30 years. In addition, infection status of forest stands was investigated using temporary sample plots; 27 plots in Crimean pine stands and 26 plots in Scots pine. Results demonstrated that basal area increments were negatively affected by pine mistletoe for both species. Mean basal area increment losses of infected trees for the last decade were determined as 24% for Scots pine and 26% for Crimean pine. Basal area increment losses varied by infection levels (light, moderate and severe) as follows: 25%, 20% and 28% for Scots pines and 20%, 32% and 9% for Crimean pines. Scots pine stands were more severely infected by pine mistletoe than Crimean pine stands. There were negative correlations between number of infected trees and stand density for both species, while positive correlation was detected between the number of infected trees and mean diameter for Scots pine. The results of this study indicate that the pine mistletoe infection has negative effect on radial growth of Scots pine and Crimean pine trees. The results can be an important contribution to the forest management and protection activities in mistletoe-infected stands.  相似文献

Loblolly pine decline, characterized by deteriorating root systems leading to shortening and thinning of foliage, has been observed throughout portions of the south‐eastern United States. Several root‐inhabiting ophiostomatoid fungi, including Leptographium procerum, Leptographium terebrantis, Leptographium serpens, and Grosmannia huntii are associated with lateral root damage on declining loblolly pine. Trees of various ages were inoculated in primary lateral roots during fall (2006 and 2007) and spring (2007 and 2008). All fungi caused a darkened, resin‐filled lesion on the surface of the phloem, extending into the xylem that was larger than that of controls. Only lesions associated with G. huntii infection were significantly larger in the spring season, compared with the fall. Grosmannia huntii was found to be the most virulent fungus, causing lesions that were longer, deeper and larger than all other fungal species during the spring and larger than L. terebrantis and L. procerum in the fall. Leptographium serpens was the second most virulent fungal species, causing lesions larger than L. procerum and L. terebrantis (with the exception of lesion depth) during both seasons. These tests indicate that G. huntii and L. serpens are significant root pathogens, capable of causing considerable damage, while L. terebrantis and L. procerum may be less virulent. Depending on the actions of their vectors, G. huntii and L. serpens may be responsible for significant root deterioration and tree disease.  相似文献

Two biotypes of Lophodermium pinastri, perhaps differing in their pathogenicity, were recognised on Pinus sylvestris in NE Scotland. These biotypes are described in artificial culture and are shown to be associated with definite habitats on pines, both in the plantation and in the nursery. In the discussion it is suggested that the present results might help to explain the difficulty many workers have experienced in trying to infect artificially young pine needles with L. pinastri.  相似文献

The frequency of needles and the proportion of needle segments infected by Lophodermium piceae were compared in symptomless and Chrysomyxa abietis‐infected, 1‐year‐old needles of Picea abies. In late spring, symptomless needles from both rust‐infected and healthy saplings were sampled. In addition, rust‐infected, totally chlorotic needles and needles with chlorosis along about half their length from the diseased trees were examined. In all three stands, the proportion of segments infected by L. piceae was larger in the rust‐infected half of the needle than in the symptomless half; but the difference was statistically significant in only one of the stands. The proportion of L. piceae‐infected segments among the nonrust‐infected needles was the same as that found for the uninfected half of rust‐infected needles (after correction for size differences). No differences in the proportion of L. piceae‐infected segments were found between the totally chlorotic, rust‐infected needles and the green needles of diseased or healthy trees.  相似文献

Interactions in vitro among three pine needle fungi . Interactions in vitro among Lophodermium pinastri, Naemacyclus niveus and Dothistroma pini, all fungi on conifers, were related to their various host spectra. First‐ and second‐year containerized Norway spruce seedlings were inoculated with conidia of type A (large tree type) and type B (small tree type) of Gremmeniella abietina var. abietina at different times during the summer. The appearance of symptoms after artificial inoculation and natural infection on spruce seedlings were recorded the following spring and compared with the disease symptoms on Scots pine seedlings. The proportion of diseased seedlings after inoculation reached as high as 80%. The susceptible period during the summer began later on the first‐year seedlings than on the second‐year seedlings, and was similar for the pine seedlings. Susceptibility of first‐year seedlings was highest in August and on second‐year seedlings in July. The accumulated temperature sum, relative humidity and height growth for first‐ and second‐year seedlings was assessed. Natural infection in 2002 caused more disease on pine than on spruce seedlings. Experimental thinning of seedlings had no effect on disease incidence. In a preliminary comparison between the ability of A and B types to cause disease in Norway spruce seedlings, type B caused more damage than type A after inoculation. However, type A caused a high disease frequency in other experiments in this study. Symptoms on Norway spruce seedlings often first occurred in the mid‐section of the shoot, and were similar to those observed on pine seedlings: needles turned brown, starting at the needle base, in the spring following inoculation. On first‐year spruce, diseased needles were shed rapidly, in contrast to a slower rate of shedding on first‐year pine seedlings. Pycnidia developed about 2 years after inoculation (on pine 1 year after inoculation). On Norway spruce seedlings the lower part of the shoot, including the lateral shoots, often remained alive. The experiments show that G. abietina can cause disease on containerized Norway spruce seedlings under nursery conditions in Finland. The coincidence of spore dispersal, seedling susceptibility and predisposing factors are important in disease development.  相似文献

The xylem surface of seedlings, stem material and roots of Norway spruce (Picea abies) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) were inoculated with strains of Heterobasidion annosum s. str. and H. parviporum s. str. The depth of necrosis in wounded spruce increased at a linear rate for at least seven weeks of incubation, but the rate of necrotic spread was significantly faster in infected wounds. In wounded pine the necrosis was maintained at a more superficial level for several weeks. Both spruce and pine sapwood were initially infected by hyphae of both species. In spruce, the hyphae advanced at a constant rate behind the necrotic front. On the contrary, after 1–2 weeks living H. parviporum hyphae were rare in pine rays. Heterobasidion annosum hyphae survived in pine rays, phloem and tracheids, despite a heavy accumulation of phenolics and resins and were able to penetrate into the sapwood at a linear rate although slower than infections in spruce. Histochemistry and quantitative estimates demonstrated that peroxidase activity was initially higher in spruce sapwood than in pine. Within three days of incubation, the activity in spruce sapwood disappeared concurrently with deepening necrosis. However, in pine, in both control and infected samples, there was a significant increase in peroxidase activity in the area surrounding the superficial necrosis, up to the wound surface and in the cambium and phloem around the wound. After wounding and infection, the content of soluble protein increased significantly in wood of older trees but not in seedlings. Infection resulted in an increased formation of lipophilic extractives in both spruce and pine but to a significantly greater degree in the latter, whereas the amount of hydrophilic compounds decreased in both. High‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analyses of lipophilic extracts showed that inoculation of pine with the two species of Heterobasidion increased the amounts of pinosylvin, its monomethylether and several other phenolics as also resinous compounds. The results obtained may be relevant in explaining the known higher resistance of Scots pine to H. parviporum.  相似文献

In stands of Lodgepole pine over 6 years old, 68% of stems in Climatic Zones A and B, characterised by a relatively short growing season, and 63 % of stems in Climatic Zone C were infected by Crumenula sororia. On individual trees, the number of stem whorls showing C. sororia infection increased significantly with increasing stand elevation and with decreasing exposure in crops on Alberta and Shuswap Lake provenances over 30 years old, whereas in Shuswap, Long Beach and Vancouver Island stands less than 30 years old, increasing elevation and decreasing exposure had little effect on numbers of infected whorls. The numbers of infected whorls were not related to compartment aspect in crops of Alberta provenance, whereas in stands of Shuswap Lake, Long Beach and Vancouver Island provenances, W, SW and S-facing compartments showed fewer infections. In contrast the numbers of active cankers showed a positive correlation with increasing compartment elevation and exposure. In Zones B and C, cankers were concentrated on Northerly and Westerly aspects of individual stems. The evidence suggests that particular climatic regimes in different zones of the tree and in different ages of crop may be critical in determining the success of failure of infection by C. sororia.  相似文献

The primary objective of this research was to determine whether native species of Castilleja and Pedicularis are naturally infected by Cronartium ribicola in whitebark pine ecosystems of the Oregon and Washington Cascade Range, USA. Secondary objectives were to monitor the phenology of aecial and telial hosts to determine whether there is sufficient time for C. ribicola to complete its life cycle within high‐elevation stands and to evaluate the variety of susceptible native host species within these genera through field and growth chamber inoculation. These objectives were approached through fieldwork in 2008 and 2009 in whitebark pine ecosystems at Mt. Rainier, Mt. Adams, Mt. Hood, Mt. Bachelor, Tumalo Mtn. and Crater Lake. Forty‐nine observational study plots were established and monitored. Natural C. ribicola infection was detected on 84 Pedicularis racemosa plants and five Castilleja plants (C. applegatei, C. miniata and C. parviflora). Field observation provided evidence that there is sufficient time for C. ribicola to complete its life cycle on hosts within high‐elevation whitebark pine stands. In 2009, 18 field inoculation plots were established at Mt. Rainier and Crater Lake. Field inoculation confirmed the susceptibility of two additional species within these genera, C. arachnoidea and P. bracteosa. All four Castilleja species inoculated in the growth chamber developed infection, with an overall infection incidence of 62% (167 out of 270 plants). The identity of the rust species on field specimens as C. ribicola was verified through PCR and sequencing of the ITS1‐5.8S‐ITS2 region of DNA. Improved understanding of the role of these newly recognized hosts in white pine blister rust epidemiology should be used to prioritize sites for the restoration of ecologically valuable whitebark pine.  相似文献

Lophodermium pinastri and Aureobasidium pullulans were the fungi most often associated with foliar symptoms, including those caused by ozone, on Pinus strobus in the field. Following artificial inoculation of ozone-fumigated and untreated foliage on pine seedlings, L. pinastri was Isolated without relation to visible symptoms of ozone injury. A, pullulans was isolated only from tissues killed by ozone. No evidence of additive or interacting effects of ozone and the fungi was found.  相似文献

Embryos of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), Corsican pine (P. nigra var. maritima) and Lodgepole pine (P. contorta) were infected in vitro with Heterobasidion annosum and the activities of 1,3-β-glucanase, chitinase and β-glucosidase were monitored. Both the infected and control embryos of the three pine species showed the presence of the enzymes. Statistical analysis showed no significant increase (P > 0.05) in the levels of 1,3-β-glucanase in infected embryos for all the three pine species. However, there was a significant increase in levels of chitinase in infected embryos of P. contorta and P. nigra var. maritima and also in levels of β-glucosidase in infected embryos of all three of the pine species. The study has therefore revealed that constitutive levels of glucanohydrolase enzymes exist in the embryos of the three pine species and that the induction of chitinase and β-glucosidase was a factor in the response of the embryos to stimulation by H. annosum infection.  相似文献

A study was made of the effect of the two herbicides, Simazin and TOP-KH (salt of 2,4,5-T) on attack on seedlings of two provenances of Norway spruce by different damping off fungi.In addition, the effect of the two herbicides on the growth of these fungi in arlificial culture was investigated. Different levels of attack on the seedlings were related to the herbicide applied, its concentration and the origin of the spruce. The results gave evidence for a change in susceptibility of the host due to the herbicide.  相似文献
