Seed Pathology and Plant Quarantine in India

The present situation regarding problems and achievements in seed pathology and domestic and international quarantine in India is described. Emphasis is placed upon the need for resolving present inadequacies in this country's quarantine legislation and for international alignment in seed health testing methods, in addition to a general information exchange on plant pathogens.

Abstract

Data on shoot borer, Chilo infuscatellus Snell., infestation and granulosis virus infection were collected from sugarcane planted during early and late main seasons and special season on 45, 60, 75 and 90 days after planting. The shoot borer infestation varied significantly among seasons of planting and age of the crop. It was low in March‐April planted crop compared to December‐January and special season planted crops owing to higher rainfall. The infestation was more on 45 and 60 days old crop compared to 75 and 90 days. The seasons of planting, age of the crop and stage of the host larva failed to have any significant influence on the virus infection.     

The Practical Considerations of Scale in Plant Pathology

The concept of scale has only recently gained recognition as a central theme in ecology. The rise in significance of scale in ecology can be attributed to the increase in hypothesis-driven experimental ecology over the last quarter century, and the realization that experimental results do not sufficiently explain past, or predict future observations in nature. Plant pathologists, who rely heavily on hypothesis-driven research, have confronted these same issues for nearly a century. In this paper, I will provide a concise presentation and discussion of the important concepts of scale and how they apply to the discipline of plant pathology.     

Trends in research reported in the Netherlands Journal of Plant Pathology, 1895–1973

The ‘Tijdschrift over Planteziekten’, 1895–1963 (Netherlands Journal of Plant Pathology, 1963 on) was analysed to assess the development of plant pathology in the Netherlands. The approach to phytopathological problems is becoming more and more specialized and field work has given way to experimentation in the laboratory.
