Six varieties of forage kochia (Kochia prostrata [L.] Schrad.), two Atriplex shrubs native to North America, and four drought-tolerant perennial grass varieties were seeded and evaluated under arid rangeland conditions in Jordan. Varieties were seeded in December 2007 and evaluated in 2008 and 2009 at two sites. Conditions were dry with Qurain receiving 110 mm and 73 mm and Tal Rimah receiving 58 mm and 43 mm of annual precipitation during the winters of 2007/2008 and 2008/2009, respectively. Plants were more abundant and taller (P < 0.001) at Qurain than Tal Rimah in 2008. Forage kochia frequency was 48% and 30% in 2008 at Qurain and Tal Rimah, respectively. However, no seeded plants were observed at Tal Rimah in 2009, suggesting that 58 mm and 43 mm of annual precipitation are insufficient to allow plants to persist over multiple years. At the wetter site, forage kochia abundance in 2009 was similar (P = 0.90) to that observed in 2008 and plant height increased (P < 0.001) from 2008 (14.4 cm ± 1.1 SE) to 2009 (38.4 cm ± 1.1 SE). Sahro-select and Otavny-select were the most abundant forage kochia varieties (P < 0.05), suggesting that these experimental lines could be more adapted to the environmental conditions of Jordan than the commercially available cultivar Immigrant. Frequency of perennial grass varieties declined (P < 0.001) at Qurain from 82% ± 4 SE to 39% ± 4 SE between 2008 and 2009, respectively. Among grasses, Siberian wheatgrass had better stands than crested wheatgrass, with Russian wildrye being intermediate. Based on this study, forage kochia appears to have great potential for establishing palatable perennial shrubs in arid rangeland conditions in Jordan if annual precipitation is at least 70 mm. Arid-adapted perennial grass varieties might also be useful in rangeland restoration if annual precipitation is over 100 mm.  相似文献

Feeding sun-dried sericea lespedeza [SL; Lespedeza cuneata (Dum-Cours.) G. Don.] reduces gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infection in goats fed in confinement, but effects of this forage when fed as a supplement to goats on pasture are unclear. A study was completed in which supplemental feeds (75 and 95% SL leaf meal pellets and a commercial pellet, all fed at 0.91 kg/head/day) were offered to thirty growing male Spanish goats (9 months old, 20.6 ± 2.8 kg, 10/treatment) grazing perennial warm-season grass pastures in Fort Valley, GA, from September to November, 2010. Fecal and blood samples were taken from individual animals weekly to determine fecal egg count (FEC) and packed cell volume (PCV), respectively, and animal weights were recorded at the start and end of the trial. After 11 weeks grazing, animals were slaughtered for recovery, counting, and speciation of adult GIN from the abomasum and small intestines. There was no difference in FEC between goats fed the 75 and 95% SL leaf meal pellets, but both groups had lower (P < 0.05) FEC than the goats fed the commercial pellets from days 35 to 77. The PCV values were not affected by the dietary treatments. Animal gain per day averaged 102.0, 77.2, and 53.3 g for goats fed 95% SL, commercial, and 75% SL pellets, respectively (P < 0.05). The 95% SL leaf meal pellet goats had 93.0 and 47.3% fewer (P < 0.05) total (male + female) adult Haemonchus contortus and Teladorsagia circumcincta, respectively, than control animals, while only male H. contortus were lower (47.6%; P < 0.05) in 75% SL-fed goats compared with commercial pellet-fed animals. Feeding supplemental SL leaf meal pellets improved animal performance (95% SL pellets) and reduced worm burdens (75 and 95% SL pellets) in young grazing goats and is a useful tool for natural GIN control in small ruminants.  相似文献

The present study aimed to determine the susceptibility of 17 Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus populations, originating in the Southeast and Southern regions of Brazil, to different ivermectin concentrations (200, 500 and 630 μg/kg), administered through subcutaneous or topical (pour-on) routes. R. (B.) microplus populations from the states of Minas Gerais (seven populations), São Paulo (seven populations) and Paraná (three populations) were chosen for the tests. The selected cattle were allocated to treatment groups on day 0, and block formation was based on the arithmetic mean of female ticks (4.5–8.0 mm long) counted on three consecutive days (−3, −2 and −1). To evaluate the therapeutic and residual efficacies of these formulations, tick counts (females ranging from 4.5 to 8.0 mm long) were performed on days 3, 7 and 14 post-treatment, and continued on a weekly basis thereafter until the end of each experiment. The results obtained throughout this study, utilizing field efficacy studies, allowed us to conclude that the resistance of R. (B.) microplus against 200 and 500 μg/kg ivermectin is widely disseminated because all tick populations that had contact with these specific concentrations were diagnosed as resistant. However, it is possible to infer that R. (B.) microplus resistance against 630 μg/kg ivermectin was also widespread, diagnosed at six of ten analyzed properties. Resistance of these ectoparasites to 630 μg/kg ivermectin is most likely emerging in three other populations of R. (B.) microplus. Strategies of resistance management need to be quickly determined to keep the selection pressure at a minimum level in Brazil.  相似文献

Natural anti-parasitic compounds in plants such as condensed tannins (CT) have anthelmintic properties against a range of gastrointestinal nematodes, but for other helminths such effects are unexplored. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of CT from three different plant extracts in a model system employing the rat tapeworm, Hymenolepis diminuta, in its intermediate host, Tenebrio molitor. An in vitro study examined infectivity of H. diminuta cysticercoids (excystation success) isolated from infected beetles exposed to different concentrations of CT extracts from pine bark (PB) (Pinus sps), hazelnut pericarp (HN) (Corylus avellana) or white clover flowers (WC) (Trifolium repens), in comparison with the anthelmintic drug praziquantel (positive control). In the in vitro study, praziquantel and CT from all three plant extracts had dose-dependent inhibitory effects on cysticercoid excystation. The HN extract was most effective at inhibiting excystation, followed by PB and WC. An in vivo study was carried out on infected beetles (measured as cysticercoid establishment) fed different doses of PB, HN and praziquantel. There was a highly significant inhibitory effect of HN on cysticercoid development (p = 0.0002). Overall, CT showed a promising anti-cestodal effect against the metacestode stage of H. diminuta.  相似文献

Treatments to reduce shrub cover are commonly implemented with the objective of shifting community structure away from shrub dominance and toward shrub and perennial grass codominance. In sagebrush (Artemisia L.) ecosystems, shrub reduction treatments have had variable effects on target shrubs, herbaceous perennials, and non-native annual plants. The factors mediating this variability are not well understood. We used long-term data from Utah’s Watershed Restoration Initiative project to assess short-term (1  4 yr post-treatment) and long-term (5  12 yr post-treatment) responses of sagebrush plant communities to five shrub reduction treatments at 94 sites that span a range of abiotic conditions and sagebrush community types. Treatments were pipe harrow with one or two passes, aerator, and fire with and without postfire seeding. We analyzed effect sizes (log of response ratio) to assess responses of sagebrush, perennial and annual grasses and forbs, and ground cover to treatments. Most treatments successfully reduced sagebrush cover over the short and long term. All treatments increased long-term perennial grass cover in Wyoming big sagebrush (A. tridentata Nutt. ssp. wyomingensis Beetle & Young) communities, but in mountain big sagebrush (ssp. vaseyana [Rydb.] Beetle) communities, perennial grasses increased only when seeded after fire. In both sagebrush communities, treatments generally resulted in short-term, but not long-term, increases in perennial forb cover. Annual grasses (largely invasive cheatgrass, Bromus tectorum L.) increased in all treatments on sites dominated by mountain big sagebrush but stayed constant or decreased on sites dominated by Wyoming big sagebrush. This result was unexpected because sites dominated by Wyoming big sagebrush are typically thought to be less resilient to disturbance and less resistant to invasion than sites dominated by mountain big sagebrush. Together, these results indicate some of the benefits, risks, and contingent outcomes of sagebrush reduction treatments that should be considered carefully in any future decisions about applying such treatments.  相似文献

The medical records of 63 dogs with pituitary-dependent hypercortisolism (PDH) before and during treatment with trilostane were reviewed retrospectively. The correct trilostane dosage in dogs with PDH was based on the resolution of clinical signs and the results of an adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) stimulation test. The mean (±SD) dose rate of trilostane to achieve good clinical control was 2.8 ± 1.0 mg/kg bodyweight. Trilostane treatment resulted in a significant decline in basal plasma cortisol concentrations. The median plasma ACTH concentration (39 pmol/L, range 7–132 pmol/L; n = 60) at the optimal trilostane dosage time was significantly higher (P < 0.001) than before treatment (13 pmol/L, range 2–102 pmol/L). These values did not overlap with plasma ACTH concentrations (range 212–307 pmol/L) of five PDH dogs with trilostane-induced hypocortisolism. The median cortisol/ACTH ratio in well-controlled dogs (0.23, range 0.03–2.5; n = 46) was significantly lower (P < 0.001) than before treatment (2.59, range 0.27–13.25). Trilostane treatment resulted in an insignificant decrease in plasma aldosterone concentration (PAC), but the median plasma renin activity (PRA) at the time the trilostane dosage was considered optimal (265 fmol/L/s, range 70–3280 fmol/L/s; n = 18) was significantly higher (P < 0.001) than prior to treatment (115 fmol/L/s, range 15–1330 fmol/L/s). Similarly, the median PAC/PRA ratio during trilostane treatment (0.16, range 0.003–0.92; n = 17) was significantly lower (P < 0.001) than before treatment (median 0.44, range 0.04–1.33). Trilostane affected both the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical and the renin–aldosterone axes. The results also suggested that basal plasma ACTH concentration may be used to detect trilostane overdosage.  相似文献

Lactobacillus reuteri ATCC 55730 (L. reuteri ATCC 55730) and L. reuteri L22 were studied for their probiotic potential. These two strains were able to produce an antimicrobial substance, termed reuterin, the maximum production of reuterin by these two strains was detected in the late logarithmic growth phase (16 h in MRS and 20 h in LB broths). These two strains could significantly reduce the growth of Salmonella pullorum ATCC 9120 in MRS broth, L. reuteri ATCC 55730 with a reduction of 48.2 ± 4.15% (in 5 log) and 89.7 ± 2.59% (in 4 log) respectively, at the same time, L. reuteri L22 was 69.4 ± 3.48% (in 5 log) and 80.4 ± 3.22% respectively. L. reuteri ATCC 55730 was active against the majority of the pathogenic species, including S. pullorum ATCC 9120 and Escherichia coli O78, while L. reuteri L22 was not as effective as L. reuteri ATCC 55730. The two potential strains were found to survive variably at pH 2.5 and were unaffected by bile salts, while neither of the strains was haemolytic. Moreover, L. reuteri ATCC 55730 exhibited variable susceptibility towards commonly used antibiotics; but L. reuteri L22 showed resistant to most antibiotics in this study. L. reuteri ATCC 55730 consequently was found to significantly increase survival rate in a Salmonella-induced pullorum disease model in chick. To conclude, strain L. reuteri ATCC 55730 possesses desirable probiotic properties, such as antimicrobial activity and immunomodulation in vitro, which were confirmed in vivo by the use of animal models.  相似文献

Five studies (trials I to V) were conducted on ranches located in the intermountain west to determine the effect of sustained-release parasite control (Ivomec SR Bolus®, Merial Limited, Rahway, NJ) on cattle performance and fecal nematode egg counts. Cattle in trials I to IV grazed irrigated meadows for 156 d (n=250 yearling heifers), 117 d (n=250 yearling steers), 85 d (n=150 yearling heifers), and 85 d (n=60 calves), respectively. In trial V, yearling steers (n=200) grazed dry high-desert range for 190 d. Weights and fecal samples were taken initially and at the end of each trial. Cattle were paired by weight and randomly assigned to treatment 1) Control: no deworming for the grazing period or 2) SRI: sustained-release ivermectin. For trials I to V, total gain difference (SRI minus Control) and ADG difference were 10.0 kg and 0.064 kg/d (P<0.001), 13.9 kg and 0.119 kg/d (P<0.001), 6.9 kg and 0.082 kg/d (P<0.01), 8.0 kg and 0.095 kg/d (P=0.05), and −0.48 kg and −0.003 kg/d (P=0.86), respectively. For trials I to V, mean initial, final Control, and final SRI fecal egg counts in eggs per gram were 0.4, 15.2, and 0.1; 6.0, 8.3, and 0.0; 75.8, 57.0, and 16.6; 76.0, 39.1, and 0.0; and 1.8, 2.0, and 0.0; respectively. Treatment of cattle grazing irrigated meadows with sustained-release ivermectin resulted in improved weight gain and fecal egg counts that were diminished to near zero. No differences (P>0.05) in weight gains were detected for cattle administered sustained-release ivermectin that grazed dry high desert range.  相似文献

Ivermectin, the antiparasitic drug from the macrocyclic lactones class raises attention due to its high efficiency against nematodes and arthropods and very specific toxic and side effects that it may produce in host. Dominant clinical symptoms of adverse effects and toxicity of ivermectin in animals are tremor, ataxia, CNS depression and coma which often results in mortality. In our study increasing intravenous doses of ivermectin, (6 or more times higher than therapeutic dose: 1.25, 2.5, 3.75, 5.0, 6.25 and 7.5 mg/kg), caused dose-dependent disturbance of motor coordination in treated rats. The median effective dose (ED50) that was able to impair the rota-rod performance in rats treated 3 min before testing was 2.52 mg/kg. This effect weakens over time, while in the rats treated 60 min before the rota-rod test, ED50 of ivermectin was 4.21 mg/kg. Whereas, all tested doses of ivermectin did not cause any other clinical symptoms of toxicity. Ivermectin has no effect on the contractions of isolated diaphragm caused by the EFS, which effectively blocked mecamylamine (100 μM) and pancuronium (1 and 2 μM). Effect on motor coordination is the first detectable clinical symptom of ivermectin toxicity and apparently is a result of its central effects.  相似文献

BackgroundCirculating plasma N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) concentration facilitates emergency diagnosis of congestive heart failure (CHF) in people. Its utility to discriminate between dyspneic cats with CHF vs. primary respiratory disease requires further assessment. Our objectives were to determine if NT-proBNP (1) differentiates dyspneic cats with CHF vs. primary respiratory disease; (2) increases with renal insufficiency; (3) correlates with left atrial dimension, radiographic cardiomegaly, and estimated left ventricular filling pressure (E/Ea).MethodsNT-proBNP was measured in 167 dyspneic cats (66 primary respiratory disease, 101 CHF) to evaluate (1) relationship with clinical parameters; (2) ability to distinguish CHF from primary respiratory disease; (3) optimal cut-off values using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis.ResultsNT-proBNP (1) was higher (median and inter-quartile [25th–75th] percentile) in CHF (754 pmol/L; 437, 1035 pmol/L) vs. primary respiratory disease (76.5 pmol/L; 24, 180 pmol/L) cohorts (P < 0.001); (2) positively correlated in CHF cats with increased inter-ventricular septal end-diastolic thickness (ρ = 0.266; P = 0.007) and LV free wall thickness (ρ = 0.218; P = 0.027), but not with radiographic heart size, left atrial size, left ventricular dimensions, E/Ea ratio, BUN, creatinine, or thyroxine; (3) distinguished dyspneic CHF cats from primary respiratory disease at 265 pmol/L cut-off value with 90.2% sensitivity, 87.9% specificity, 92% positive predictive value, and 85.3% negative predictive value (area under ROC curve, 0.94).ConclusionsNT-proBNP accurately discriminated CHF from respiratory disease causes of dyspnea.  相似文献

Serology indicates that Lawsonia intracellularis infection is widespread in many countries, with most pigs seroconverting before 22 weeks of age. However, the majority of animals appear to be sub-clinically affected, demonstrated by the low reported prevalence of diarrhoea. Production losses caused by sub-clinical proliferative enteropathy (PE) are more difficult to diagnose, indicating the need for a quantitative L. intracellularis assay that correlates well with disease severity. In previous studies, increasing numbers of L. intracellularis in pig faeces, quantified with a real time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), showed a strong negative correlation with average daily gain (ADG).In this study, the association between faecal L. intracellularis numbers and PE severity was examined in two L. intracellularis experimental challenge trials (n1 = 32 and n2 = 95). The number of L. intracellularis shed in individual faeces was determined by qPCR on days 0, 7, 14, 17 and 21 days post challenge, and average daily gain was recorded over the same period. The severity of histopathological lesions of PE was scored at 21 days post challenge. L. intracellularis numbers correlated well with histopathology severity and faecal consistency scores (r = 0.72 and 0.68, respectively), and negatively with ADG (r = ?0.44). Large reductions in ADG (131 g/day) occurred when the number of L. intracellularis shed by experimentally challenged pigs increased from 107 to 108 L. intracellularis, although smaller ADG reductions were also observed (15 g/day) when the number of L. intracellularis increased from 106 to 107 L. intracellularis.  相似文献

One hundred and twenty-four calves with neonatal diarrhoea were investigated in order to assess the prevalence of hyperkalaemia and the associated clinical signs. Hyperkalaemia (potassium concentration >5.8 mmol/L) was recognized in 42 (34%) calves and was more closely associated with dehydration than with decreases in base excess or venous blood pH. In 75 calves with normal blood concentrations of D-lactate (i.e. ?3.96 mmol/L), K concentrations were moderately correlated with base excess values (r = ?0.48, P < 0.001). In contrast, no significant correlation was observed in 49 calves with elevated D-lactate. Only three hyperkalaemic calves had bradycardia and a weak positive correlation was found between heart rate and K concentrations (r = 0.22, P = 0.014). Ten of the 124 calves had cardiac arrhythmia and of these seven had hyperkalaemia indicating that cardiac arrhythmia had a low sensitivity (17%) but a high specificity (96%) as a predictor of hyperkalaemia. In a subset of 34 calves with base excess values ??5 mmol/L and D-lactate concentrations <5 mmol/L (of which 22 had hyperkalaemia), changes in posture/ability to stand could be mainly explained by elevations of K concentrations (P < 0.001) and to a lesser extent by increases in L-lactate concentrations (P = 0.024). Skeletal muscle weakness due to hyperkalaemia alongside hypovolaemia may produce a clinical picture that is similar to that in calves with marked D-lactic acidosis. However, since reductions in the strength of the palpebral reflex are closely correlated with D-lactate concentrations, a prompt palpebral reflex can assist the clinical prediction of hyperkalaemia in calves presenting with a distinct impairment in their ability to stand (specificity 99%, sensitivity 29%).  相似文献

Canine extrahepatic congenital portosystemic shunts (EH-cPSS) are classified into several anatomical types, depending on the origin and termination of the shunt vessel. The aim of this retrospective study was to determine the proportion and clinical features of each anatomical shunt type in a population of dogs presented to a veterinary teaching hospital in Japan. Dogs diagnosed with EH-cPSS using computed tomographic (CT) portography were included (n = 172) and shunts were classified based on previous reports. Clinical data were collected from case records and analysed statistically. The most common anatomical type was the spleno-phrenic shunt (n = 64), followed by the spleno-azygos (n = 38), right gastric-caval (n = 29), spleno-caval (n = 21), right gastric-caval with caudal loop (n = 9), right gastric-phrenic (n = 6), colono-caval (n = 3), spleno-phrenic and azygos (n = 1), and porto-caval (n = 1) shunts. Spleno-phrenic and spleno-azygos shunts were diagnosed more frequently in older dogs than right gastric-caval and spleno-caval shunts (P < 0.05). The portal vein/aortic (PV/Ao) ratio was significantly larger in dogs with spleno-phrenic shunts than in dogs with spleno-azygos, right gastric-caval or spleno-caval shunts (P < 0.05). The PV/Ao ratio was significantly larger in dogs with spleno-azygos shunts than in dogs with right gastric-caval shunts. Dogs with spleno-phrenic shunts had significantly lower serum alkaline phosphatase activities than those with right gastric-caval or spleno-caval shunts. Dogs with spleno-phrenic shunts had significantly lower fasting ammonia concentrations than those with spleno-caval shunts.  相似文献

ObjectivesTo determine the weekly variability of serum and plasma N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) concentrations in healthy dogs.Animals, materials and methodsFifty-three normal dogs were examined prospectively. Serum (n = 25) or plasma (n = 28) samples were obtained for NT-proBNP assay at one week interval for 3 consecutive weeks.ResultsMedian serum or plasma NT-proBNP concentration did not change over 3 consecutive weeks. Twenty-two of 53 dogs (42%) had at least one NT-proBNP value >500 pmol/L, including 14 dogs with at least one serum NT-proBNP concentration >500 pmol/L and 8 dogs with at least one plasma NT-proBNP concentration >500 pmol/L during the 3-week sampling period. The difference between the maximum and minimum NT-proBNP value obtained over the 3-week sampling period was <100 pmol/L in 40% of dogs, between 100 and 200 pmol/L in 40% of dogs, and >200 pmol/L in 20% of dogs. Of the 19 dogs with a value >500 pmol/L on either week 1 or 2, 11 dogs (58%) had a subsequent NT-proBNP value <500 pmol/L on either week 2 or 3.ConclusionsThere is a high degree of variability in weekly serum and plasma NT-proBNP values in healthy dogs. Individual variability should be considered when interpreting NT-proBNP results in dogs.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to characterise the pharmacokinetic properties of different formulations of erythromycin in cats. Erythromycin was administered as lactobionate (4 mg/kg intravenously (IV)), base (10 mg/kg, intramuscularly (IM)) and ethylsuccinate tablets or suspension (15 mg/kg orally (PO)). After IV administration, the major pharmacokinetic parameters were (mean ± SD): area under the curve (AUC)(0–∞) 2.61 ± 1.52 μg h/mL; volume of distribution (Vz) 2.34 ± 1.76 L/kg; total body clearance (Clt) 2.10 ± 1.37 L/h kg; elimination half-life (t½λ) 0.75 ± 0.09 h and mean residence time (MRT) 0.88 ± 0.13 h. After IM administration, the principal pharmacokinetic parameters were (mean ± DS): peak concentration (Cmax), 3.54 ± 2.16 μg/mL; time of peak (Tmax), 1.22 ± 0.67 h; t½λ, 1.94 ± 0.21 h and MRT, 3.50 ± 0.82 h. The administration of erythromycin ethylsuccinate (tablets and suspension) did not result in measurable serum concentrations. After IM and IV administrations, erythromycin serum concentrations were above minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC)90 = 0.5 μg/mL for 7 and 1.5 h, respectively. However, these results should be interpreted cautiously since tissue erythromycin concentrations have not been measured and can reach much higher concentrations than in blood, which may be associated with enhanced clinical efficacy.  相似文献

The study compared limb-to-lung circulation times (CT) in dogs under general anaesthesia after premedication with dexmedetomidine (DEX) or acepromazine–methadone (ACE–M). Healthy male and female dogs (n = 20) were randomly assigned to receive acepromazine 0.04 mg/kg and methadone 0.2 mg/kg intramuscularly (IM), or DEX 0.01 mg/kg IM. Anesthesia was induced with propofol and maintained with isoflurane at similar concentration in both groups. Mechanical ventilation was started immediately (20 breaths/min; inspiratory to expiratory ratio 1:2) and tidal volume was adjusted to achieve an end-tidal CO2 concentration (PE’CO2) of between 3.9 and 5.3 kPa. Ten minutes later arterial blood gas was analyzed and baseline data recorded for 3 minutes. A single dose of sodium bicarbonate 0,5 mEq/kg was administered intravenously over 10 s starting with inspiration. Limb-to-lung CT was defined as the time interval between the start of bicarbonate injection and the recording of the highest PE’CO2.Following bicarbonate administration, PE’CO2 increased, and then rapidly decreased to baseline in both groups. CT was shorter in the ACE–M group (20 ± 2.3 vs. 27 ± 5.1 s). Bodyweight was higher in the ACE–M group (30.6 ± 3.9 vs. 23.3 ± 6.8 kg). Mean arterial blood pressure was higher in the DEX group (92 ± 9 vs. 73 ± 7 mm Hg) but premedication with DEX significantly prolonged CT compared to premedication with ACE–M.  相似文献

Ventenata (Ventenata dubia [Leers] Coss.) is an exotic annual grass that can invade intermountain rangeland plant communities, where it can form monotypic stands, degrade wildlife habitat, and reduce livestock forage. There is limited information on ventenata control in rangelands as it has only recently been identified as a substantial problem. Imazapic is a pre-emergent herbicide commonly used to control other exotic annual grasses and, therefore, is likely to control ventenata in rangelands. We evaluated five application rates of imazapic (0  175 g ae  ha 1) on ventenata and other exotic annual grass control and plant community response at two rangeland sites in 2 yr (2014 and 2015). Imazapic reduced exotic annual grass (largely ventenata) cover and density, with greater control with increasing imazapic rates. Exotic annual grass density at the highest levels of control (82%−94%) was 184  299 plants  m 2 the first yr after imazapic application. Exotic annual grasses fully recovered in the second or third yr after imazapic application. Bare ground generally increased with imazapic application. However, density of perennial vegetation (grasses and forbs) did not vary among treatments. Perennial vegetation cover generally did not increase with imazapic control of ventenata and other exotic annual grasses. Imazapic can control ventenata; however, even at the highest rates, control was not enough to shift the dominance from exotic annual species to perennial species. Integrating other treatments with imazapic application may be a strategy to improve ventenata control and increase perennial vegetation and will require further investigation. The difficulty and likely expense of achieving substantial and lasting control of ventenata suggest, similar to other exotic annual grasses, that preventing ventenata invasion and dominance should be a high management priority.  相似文献

Ivermectin (IVM) resistance of Cooperia spp. in cattle has become an increasing and global problem. The early detection of anthelmintic resistance (AR) is important to propose strategies to slow down the development of resistance and requires sensitive, reliable, economic high-throughput and practical tests. The purpose of the present study was to apply a larval migration inhibition test (LMIT) for evaluating IVM and MOX efficacy against well-characterized field isolates of Cooperia spp. infecting cattle in Brazil. Eight isolates were used for IVM and seven for MOX. The following EC50 values of IVM were observed for the isolates: susceptible, 1.16 ηmol; Nova Alvorada do Sul I, 4.09 ηmol (RF = 3.52); Campo Grande BNA, 3.57 ηmol (RF = 3.07); Campo Grande TBR, 4.09 ηmol (RF = 3,52); Nova Alvorada do Sul II, 2.50 ηmol (RF = 2.15); Bandeirantes, 11.35 ηmol (RF = 9.78); Campo Grande II, 6.03 ηmol (RF = 5.20); and Porto Mortinho, 8.63 ηmol (RF = 7.44). For MOX, the following EC50 values were observed: susceptible, 0.75 ηmol; Campo Grande BNA, 0.93 ηmol (RF = 1.24); Campo Grande TBR, 0.36 ηmol (RF = 0.48); Nova Alvorada do Sul II, 2.57 ηmol (RF = 3.42); Bandeirantes, 1.43 ηmol (RF = 1.90); Campo Grande II, 1.08 ηmol (RF = 1.44); and Porto Mortinho, 0.49 ηmol (RF = 0.65). The LMIT used in the present study can be a useful tool for in vitro evaluation of IVM, but not of MOX. However, such methodology cannot be used in large-scale studies yet. The isolates of Cooperia spp. showed various degrees of resistance to IVM, though remaining susceptible to MOX.  相似文献

Aristida purpurea (purple threeawn) is a competitive native perennial grass with monoculturistic tendencies and poor palatability. We examined effects of fire, defoliation, and interspecific/intraspecific planting for 1) threeawn responses in the presence of threeawn, Bouteloua gracilis, or Pascopyrum smithii, and 2) B. gracilis and P. smithii response with threeawn. Biomass, aboveground production, tillers, and axillary buds were analyzed following two fire and four clipping treatments applied to three species–pair combinations in a completely randomized factorial design with nine replications. Fire killed 36% of threeawn. Fire reduced surviving threeawn biomass 61% and reduced production 27%. Threeawn production was greatest when neither plant was clipped and least when competing species were moderately clipped, or when both plants were severely clipped. Tiller counts of burned threeawn were similar among clipping treatments, and less than non-clipped or moderately clipped plants not burned. Fire decreased threeawn axillary buds on average by 25%. Moderately clipped plants had greater production than those from other clipping treatments across species. Average threeawn percentage of pot biomass was greater with B. gracilis (46 ± 3% SE) than P. smithii (38 ± 3% SE). Fire reduced threeawn from 60 ± 3% to 23 ± 3% of pot biomass, indicating good potential for rapid reductions in threeawn dominance and restoration of plant diversity with fire.  相似文献
