A 5-year-old Golden Retriever presented for lameness evaluation and removal of a dynamic compression plate on the left femur exhibited neurologic signs compatible with a left sciatic peripheral neuropathy. Radiographs revealed a healed fracture of the left femur and a slightly narrowed intervertebral disc space with ventral spondylosis at T12–13. An EMG demonstrated fibrillation potentials and positive sharp waves in the left hind limb muscles innervated by the peroneal nerve. Surgery was performed to remove the bone plate and explore the left sciatic nerve. The proximal 3 cm of the left peroneal nerve was surrounded by thick fibrous connective tissue and its diameter was smaller than the more distal segment. The dog's condition remained static for 4 weeks and then gradually progressed to paraparesis in 2 weeks. A neurologic examination at that time indicated a caudal lumbar spinal cord lesion and a myelogram confirmed an intradural mass at the level of the 4th lumbar vertebra. The dog was destroyed and a necropsy performed. The histologic diagnosis was meningeal sarcoma.  相似文献

A case of peripheral neuropathy associated with lymphosarcoma in a dog is described. A 6-year-old flat-coated Retriever male was presented with urinary incontinence and lameness of the right hind leg. Five days after hospitalization the dog developed a right-sided facial paralysis. The dog was destroyed 3 weeks after admittance. The post-mortem examination revealed lymphosarcoma in the stomach and a peripheral neuropathy mainly affecting the femoral and facial nerves. The possible connection between the lymphosarcoma and the peripheral neuropathy is discussed.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To report femoral nerve dysfunction caused by focal iliopsoas muscle injury and treated by performing tenectomy of the muscle insertion. STUDY DESIGN: Case report. ANIMALS: A 4-year-old, castrated male, English Mastiff. RESULTS: Iliopsoas muscle injury caused femoral nerve deficits and severe pain. Focal injury was not detected by ultrasonography or computed tomography but was visible on magnetic resonance (MRI) images. Tenectomy of the insertion of the iliopsoas muscle relieved signs of pain. CONCLUSIONS: Femoral nerve dysfunction may occur with iliopsoas muscle injury. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Iliopsoas muscle injury should be considered in patients with hip pain and MRI is a useful test for diagnosis. Tenectomy may be indicated for relief of chronic iliopsoas muscle pain.  相似文献

Hemoperitoneum secondary to traumatic rupture of an adrenocortical adenocarcinoma was diagnosed in a 10-year-old male dog. Immediate surgical attention was required to remove the tumor and to control hemorrhage. The dog appeared to develop transient hypoadrenocorticism after surgery, but recovered with short-term exogenous corticosteroid administration. At 6 months after surgery, the dog was clinically normal.  相似文献

A 12-year-old spayed Golden Retriever with mycosis fungoides was treated by use of a chemotherapy protocol that included vincristine. After 16 weekly vincristine injections, the dog began to have signs of peripheral neuropathy. Results of electromyographic examination were consistent with muscle denervation, and motor nerve conduction velocity was depressed. Histologic examination of a common peroneal nerve biopsy specimen revealed severe nerve fiber degeneration. Clinical response and pathologic evidence of improvement were observed after the drug had been discontinued for 2.5 months.  相似文献

An 11-year-old, mixed-breed dog with dyschezia, tenesmus and haematochezia was presented. A rectal stricture caused by an adenocarcinoma was diagnosed. Following the failure of a rectal 'pull-through' procedure, which dehisced seven days later, an incontinent end-on colostomy was performed, allowing amputation of the colorectum with the anus and perineal skin. A two-piece device consisting of a flange and a drainable pouch was used for postoperative faecal evacuation and collection. Mild peristomal dermatitis was the only complication. Patient management was easily carried out by the owner at home, and the dog survived for four months with a satisfactory quality of life. Incontinent end-on colostomy may prove to be a useful treatment for canine annular colorectal tumours.  相似文献

A 7-year-old, 46-kg spayed female rottweiler dog was presented with sudden onset of disorientation, bilateral convergent strabismus, and enophthalmos. Diagnostic workup revealed hypothyroid-associated cranial neuropathy. Symptoms abated considerably upon treatment with levothyroxine-sodium (T4) at an initial dose of 800 μg/kg body weight (BW), PO, q12h, which was reduced 3 days later to 600 μg/kg BW, q12h due to severe agitation and panting. Two weeks later the dosage of the levothyroxine-sodium (T4) was reduced to 400 μg/kg BW in the morning and 600 μg/kg BW in the evening. Eight weeks after the initial presentation, the dog had recovered with only mild convergent strabismus in the right eye. This is the first case report of suspected hypothyroid-associated neuropathy resulting in these symptoms.  相似文献

Peripheral neuropathy and hypotension were found in a diabetic dog with profound weakness. Insulin therapy controlled the diabetes mellitus. As the blood glucose was normalized, the neurologic signs and hypotension resolved, suggesting a causal relationship.  相似文献

A nine-year-old dog presented with clinical signs consistent with bilateral trigeminal neuropathy. Multicentric lymphoma was diagnosed, and neoplastic lymphocytes were identified in the cerebrospinal fluid. Electromyography revealed spontaneous activity in temporal and masseter muscles. Histopathological examination demonstrated neoplastic cell invasion of temporal and masseter myofibers and of multiple peripheral nerves, including the trigeminal nerve. Central nervous system pathology consisted primarily of spinal root and leptomeningeal lymphoid cell infiltration with relative sparing of spinal cord and brain parenchyma.  相似文献

While various bariatric surgeries are commonplace in obesity medicine for humans, these techniques have not been commonly used in veterinary medicine. A technique used in humans consists in endoscopically placing an intragastric balloon. The intragastric balloon takes volume in the stomach causing a feeling of satiety and reducing food intake. A 57.6 kg, 9-year-old neutered female Labrador dog with chronic hypothyroidism was presented for overweight management. Combined levothyroxine treatment and dietary management with specific alimentation for obesity had failed to control overweight. An intragastric balloon was placed endoscopically in the stomach to allow the reduction of the gastric capacity and resulted in effective weight loss. The dog weight decreased to 40.9 kg at the time of intragastric balloon removal 198 days after placement. Further research including a larger sample size and long term follow-up is required to establish safety and effectiveness of this procedure.  相似文献

This case study reports the outcome of dorsal and ventral stabilisation of a traumatic cervical instability in a dog. A 2-year-old, male Pointer was admitted following a motor vehicle accident. Clinical examination revealed non-ambulatory tetraparesis, severe neck pain and upper motor neuron changes in all limbs. Deep pain response was present. Subluxation of C2/3 and fractures of the dorsal spinous process and lamina of C2 were observed on radiographs. Ventral stabilisation was performed with screws and bone cement (polymethylmethacrylate). For dorsal fixation of the fractures, screws and cerclage wire were used. The dog stood up independently after 1 month, was able to walk 1.5 months postoperatively and had recovered completely at 1 year following surgery. We conclude that combined stabilisation techniques are effective for this type of cervical fracture in which the dorsal, middle and ventral structures of the vertebra are severely disrupted.  相似文献

Presented is the case of an epiglottal fibrosarcoma in a dog. The location of the mass resulted in challenges in the delivery of adequate dose to the tumor, and herein we describe the treatment using an electronic brachytherapy source. The treatment consisted of four Gy fractions, twice daily for a total of 10 fractions (40 Gy total). Visual reevaluation two weeks after treatment supported adequate spatial dose delivery, and the patient was reportedly improved six weeks after treatment. We demonstrate that plesiotherapy using an electronic brachytherapy device is feasible and may be useful in the treatment of carefully selected veterinary tumors.  相似文献

A one-year-old female English Springer Spaniel with no previous history of cardiac disease presented to the Queen's Veterinary School Hospital following a blunt traumatic incident with an acquired, direct Gerbode defect and associated third-degree atrioventricular block. Two months after the initial incident, follow-up echocardiography showed a nearly closed Gerbode defect with just trivial residual flow. A 24-h Holter monitor indicated second-degree atrioventricular block with occasional junctional tachycardia. A reassessment 22 months later confirmed spontaneous closure of the previously acquired traumatic Gerbode defect, with 2:1 second-degree atrioventricular block. The dog remained clinically asymptomatic, and free of treatment. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of spontaneous closure of a previously acquired traumatic Gerbode defect in a dog.  相似文献

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 2-year-old Griffon Vendéen was examined because of a 1-month history of right hind limb lameness after a traumatic injury. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Neurologic examination revealed monoplegia and anesthesia of the right hind limb distal to the stifle (femorotibial) joint except for the area supplied by the cutaneous saphenous nerve. Results of electromyographic testing were consistent with a severe lesion of the tibial and peroneal nerves at the level of the stifle joint. TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: Exploratory surgery revealed an 80-mm-long gap in both the peroneal and tibial branches of the right sciatic nerve. A section of the left cutaneous saphenous nerve was interposed to graft the nerve defects. The dog received joint mechanotherapy and electrophysiologic therapy during the reinnervation process. Ten months after surgery, the dog had recovered almost completely. Neurologic examination revealed diminished flexion of the tarsal and digital joints. Repeat electromyographic testing revealed no abnormal spontaneous electrical activity in the right hind limb musculature, and small compound muscle action potentials were recorded in the right interosseous and cranial tibial muscles. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Without surgical treatment, neurotmesis injury results in poor recovery of motor and sensory functions and may result in amputation. If a nerve defect exists, nerve grafting should be considered, even if the procedure is delayed until well after the injury. The sensory portion of the cutaneous saphenous nerve is a potential source of peripheral nerve for grafting in dogs. Reinnervation is a long-term process and physiologic support and owner involvement are necessary, but nearly complete functional recovery is possible.  相似文献
