This trial was carried out in Piracicaba, São Paulo State, Brazil, to comparatively evaluate the degree of resistance to naturally acquired gastrointestinal nematode infections in sheep of the following genetic groups: purebred Santa Ines (SI), SI crossbred with Dorper (DO × SI), Ile de France (IF × SI), Suffolk (SU × SI), and Texel (TE × SI). Fifteen ewes from each group were raised indoors until 12 months of age. At this age, they were moved to pasture that was naturally contaminated by nematode infective larvae and were evaluated from December to May, 2007. Rainfall ranged from 267 mm in January to 37 mm in April. Maximum and minimum mean temperatures ranged from 32.5 °C to 19.0 °C in March and from 25.9 °C to 12.8 °C in May. There was an increase in the mean number of eggs per gram of feces (EPG) after animals were placed on pasture with significant difference between the SI (80 EPG) and IF × SI (347 EPG) groups in January; and the DO × SI (386 EPG) and TE × SI (258 EPG) groups in May. The highest mean fecal egg count (FEC), 2073 EPG, was recorded for the TE × SI group in February. All groups showed a progressive reduction in body weight throughout the experiment of 12.0% (TE × SI) to 15.9% (SU × SI). In general, the animals with the highest FEC presented the lowest packed cell volumes (PCV); the highest correlation coefficient between FEC × PCV occurred in the SU × SI sheep in January (r = −0.70; P < 0.01). Similarly, there was an inverse relationship between FEC and blood eosinophil values, with the highest correlation coefficient in the TE × SI sheep in February (r = −0.64; P < 0.05). Immunoglobulin G (IgG) levels against Haemonchus contortus antigens increased in all groups as a result of the exposure to parasites and remained relatively constant until the end of the study, with the exceptions of SU × SI and TE × SI, which showed a rise in IgG levels during the last sampling that coincided with a reduction in mean FEC. In conclusion, crossbreeding Santa Ines sheep with any of the breeds evaluated can result in a production increase and the maintenance of a satisfactory degree of infection resistance, especially against H. contortus and Trichostrongylus colubriformis, the major nematodes detected in this flock.  相似文献

Cottonseed has been used as a nutritional alternative in animal production. However, consequences of this nutrient in the progeny is not well characterized. Thus, this work evaluated the effect on the immune and antioxidant status of the progeny of feeding Santa Ines ewe with or without cottonseed. Twenty-four Santa Ines ewes were distributed in two feeding regimes: cottonseed (CS) concentrate (n = 12) and soybean (SB) concentrate (n = 12). After birth, lambs remained with their mothers and blood samples were collected at 1st, 3rd, 7th, 15th, 30th and 60th day of life of 24 lambs born from mothers fed with (CS, n = 12) or without (SB, n = 12) cottonseed. Serum total protein, albumin, alpha beta globulin, gamma globulin, immunoglobulin G and M, activity of glutathione peroxidase (GPx), catalase (CAT), oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) and variables related to iron metabolism were affected only by sampling times (P < 0.05). The concentration of serum total protein, alpha beta globulin, gamma globulin and immunoglobulin G and M, GPx activity and ORAC values decreased as lamb age increased. Serum albumin concentration and CAT activity, in turn, increased as lamb age increased. In this work, maternal feeding with cottonseed did not affect the serum protein profile and antioxidant status of progeny during the lactation period, indicating no transfer of gossypol effects by milk secretions. Thus, the alternative in ruminants feeding with cottonseed can be used without maternal-descendant effects to immunity and oxidative stress in lambs.  相似文献

This experiment aimed to evaluate the effect of periparturient metabolizable protein (MP) nutrition on resistance to Haemonchus contortus in single rearing Ile de France and Santa Ines ewes. The restriction-fed iso-energetic diet was calculated to provide either 0.8 (low MP diet) or 1.3 (high MP diet) times MP, from three weeks before parturition until eight weeks into lactation. The ewes were experimentally infected with 1000 H. contortus infective larvae (L3) three times a week (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays), starting five weeks before the predicted date for parturition until a total of 15,000 L3 had been administered. While both breeds showed elevated fecal egg counts (FEC), these values were significantly lower for Santa Ines ewes than Ile de France ewes, but were independent of level of MP feeding. The latter also did not affect lamb weight gain and ewe body weight variation in each breed. Packed cell volume and total plasma protein for Santa Ines in all periods were significantly higher than those for Ile de France ewes (P<0.01) but were not affected by nutrition. In contrast, levels of serum IgG and IgA antibodies against somatic H. contortus infective larvae and adult antigens were similar between breeds but higher in animals that received high MP diets (P<0.05). The reduced body score of ewes at the beginning of the experiment probably influenced their high susceptibility to incoming larvae. Since, unexpectedly, MP scarcity was not achieved in this experiment, our data support the view that Santa Ines ewes are more resistant to H. contortus than Ile de France ewes.  相似文献

Mating behavior is known to be heritable in several species, but it is not known if selection schemes for ewe reproductive traits affect mating behavior of rams. Therefore, our objectives were to determine if divergent (high vs low index) selection of a female reproductive trait (lambs born divided by age of ewe minus one) affects mating behavior patterns of male offspring during training to service an artificial vagina (AV) in a less than natural setting (Exp. 1) or during serving capacity tests (SCT) in simulated natural mating conditions (Exp. 2). The method for evaluating male mating behavior was a series of serving capacity tests to estimate sexual performance. For Exp. 1, five, 30-min observations were conducted to assess the mating behavior of 29 rams (22 mo old) being trained to service an AV. In Exp. 1, percentages of rams mounting (73 vs 36%) and ejaculating (67 vs 29%) differed (P < 0.05) between rams from high and low Rambouillet ewe selection lines, respectively. In Exp. 2, ram classification consisted of exposing each 22- to 24-mo-old ram (n = 48) to three unrestrained ewes in estrus for 18, 30-min tests. Any ram that had not mounted or ejaculated during SCT was evaluated for sexual orientation in a 30-min preference test in which each ram had access to both restrained estrual ewes and restrained rams. In Exp. 2, there was no difference (P > 0.2) in percentages of rams mounting (92 vs 78%) and ejaculating (88 vs 74%) between rams from high and low Rambouillet ewe selection lines, respectively. There was no difference (P > 0.33) between high and low ewe selection line rams for mounts or ejaculations for 18 SCT. Only one male-oriented ram was identified, which was from the high line. In Exp. 2, six SCT were necessary to obtain 95% reliability in sexual performance scores. Results of these studies indicate that long-term selection of ewes for litter size did not alter ram sexual performance after SCT under simulated natural mating conditions or affect incidence of male-oriented rams. Mating behavior observed during training to service an AV was lower for rams from ewes of the low selection line than for rams from ewes of the high selection line. We concluded that long-term selection for reproductive rate in ewes did not alter mating behavior patterns of male offspring; however, test conditions, such as restrained and unrestrained ewes and number of serving capacity tests, may affect conclusions in studies that evaluate sexual performance of rams.  相似文献

This study aimed to evaluate sex, the number of lambs per birth, and the family effects on production traits in the Santa Ines breed of sheep by estimating the least square means and coefficient of variance for those traits. A total of 484 lambs were evaluated for the following traits: weight at birth, at weaning, and at 240 days of age; weight gain during the pre-weaning and post-weaning periods; height, width, and length of different body regions; and rib eye area and fat thickness between the 12th and 13th ribs. The objectives of the present study were to compare alternative models for the genetic evaluation and assess the importance of genotype by environment interaction (G×E) in the estimation of genetic parameters and genetic evaluation of birth weight (BW), weight at 60 days of age (W60) and weight at 180 days of age (W180) of Santa Ines sheep. Data comprise 7622 BW, 4673 W60 and 2830 W180 records from animals born in 44 Brazilian herds. Four models were used for the analyses: animal model (AM) with homogeneous residual variance (1), or heterogeneous residual variance (2), hierarchical reaction norms model (HRNM) with homogeneous (1) or heterogeneous residual variance (2). The models that best fit the BW, W60 and W180 data were AM2, HRNM1 and HRNM2 respectively. Thus, models for genetic evaluation that consider heterogeneity of variances are recommended to evaluate growth traits of sheep. The correlation between intercept and slope of the HRNM was higher than 0.70 for all traits studied, indicating that animals with higher average breeding values responded better to improvement in environmental conditions, a fact characterizing the scale effect of G×E. Therefore, G×E is an important factor to be considered in the estimation of genetic parameters and genetic evaluation of growth traits of sheep.  相似文献

This study was carried out to evaluate the immune response and the impact of Trichostrongylus colubriformis infections on the performance of growing Santa Ines lambs. Thirty male lambs, 3-4 months of age, were maintained in individual pens and restrictively randomised by weight into 3 treatment groups: (1) infected group, artificially infected with 2500 T. colubriformis larvae, three times a week, for 13 weeks, and fed ad libitum; (2) Pair-Fed Group, non-infected and fed with the same amount of food consumed by the infected animal of the same class on the previous day; and (3) control group, non-infected and fed ad libitum. Refused feed was weighed daily to assess the food intake of each lamb. Animals were weighed weekly and blood and fecal samples were collected. At the end of the trial, all lambs were euthanized to determine worm burden and collect intestinal tissues and mucus samples for histological and immunological analysis. The infected group presented eosinophilia, increased number of inflammatory cells in the mucosa, in addition to an increased production of specific immunoglobulins against T. colubriformis, which partially prevented the establishment of infective larvae. As a consequence of parasitism, the infected lambs presented reduced serum albumin concentrations and demonstrated severe small intestine lesions, such as villous atrophy and epithelial erosion, which impaired the digestion and absorption of nutrients, causing a significant loss in performance. The infected group presented a 37% reduction in daily weight gain (107.26 ± 10.8 g/day), when compared with the control group (171.07 ± 7.15 g/day). The infected lambs also demonstrated the worst food conversion, i.e., each animal needed to consume on average 10.05 ± 0.52 kg of food to gain 1 kg live weight. The voluntary hay intake depression in infected animals was small, and statistical difference (P<0.01) was seen only on two occasions (ninth and 12th weeks), in comparison with the control group. In conclusion, Santa Ines lambs infected with T. colubriformis demonstrated a reduction in performance, caused by the damages produced by the adult nematodes in intestinal mucosa, and also by the immunopathological changes associated with the infection.  相似文献

2009年3月至10月,在新疆喀什地区麦盖提县多浪羊繁育基地,研究补饲矿物元素和维生素对多浪羊母羊繁殖性能的影响.将试验羊按年龄和体重配对分成3组:对照组(自然发情组),不做任何处理;试验Ⅰ组,在催情补饲阶段,每天每只羊补饲铜50 mg、碘50 mg、锌600 mg、硒2 mg,妊娠阶段每天每只羊补饲铜20 mg、碘2.5 mg、锌100 mg、硒0.5 mg;试验Ⅱ组,在催情补饲阶段,每天每只羊补饲维生素A 50万u、维生素E 800u,妊娠阶段每天每只羊补饲维生素A 5万u、维生素E 500 u.结果表明:①气温升高会降低多浪羊的发情率和受胎率;②补饲VA和VE或矿物元素铜、锌、硒、碘会提高多浪羊的产双羔率,特别是补饲VA和VE对提高双羔率效果明显.  相似文献

Two trials were conducted with ewes to determine the effects of prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF) administration during the first week of gestation. In trial 1, ewes (n = 134) were checked for breeding activity once daily and half of them received 10 mg PGF im at either 0, 24, 48, 72, 96, 120 or 144 h after detection of a breeding mark. The other half served as uninjected controls. In trial 2, ewes (n = 153) were checked for breeding activity twice daily. Two-thirds of the ewes received 10 mg PGF at either 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, 84, 96, 108, 120 and 132 h following detection of a breeding mark. The other one-third of the ewes served as uninjected controls corresponding to treatment times of 24, 48, 72, 96 or 120 h. In trial 1, the percentage of ewes lambing as a result of first service decreased as time of administration of PGF increased. The first-service pregnancy rate was 87.5% for ewes given PGF at 0 h and 0% for ewes given PGF at 144 h. Fewer (P less than .05) ewes given PGF at 96, 120 or 144 h after first mating lambed than control ewes. Similarly in trial 2, fewer (P less than .05) ewes given PGF at 96, 108, 120 or 132 h after first mating lambed than did controls. The total number of ewes lambing as a result of the entire breeding season did not differ (P greater than .05) between treated and control ewes in trial 1 (88.2 vs 87.3%) or trial 2 (85.7 vs 83.3%).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

This study compared the effects of intravaginal and intravenous routes of oxytocin (OT) administration in 46 oestrous‐induced Santa Inês ewes (6‐day treatment with progestin‐releasing intravaginal sponges and a single injection of 200 IU of eCG at the time of sponge removal) that underwent transcervical embryo recovery 6–7 days after oestrous onset and mating. All ewes received 37.5 μg of d‐cloprostenol via latero‐vulvar route, and 1 mg of oestradiol benzoate i.m. 16 hr before and 50 IU of OT 20 min before non‐surgical embryo recovery (NSER), with OT being administered intravenously (n = 21) or intravaginally (n = 21). An overall oestrous response was 95.6% (44/46), and adequate cervical retraction could be accomplished in 78.6% (33/42) of ewes. The percentage of successful NSER procedures was 57% (24/42) or 72.7% (24/33) of animals with sufficient cervical retraction. The duration of NSER procedure averaged 28 min (range: 17–40 min) and ~96% of flushing fluid could be recovered (range: 85%–100%). Out of 18 ewes that could not undergo NSER, 12 (66.6%) presented various anatomical barriers, whilst the other 33.4% did not present these barriers and still could not be traversed. Excluding the ewes with those anatomical features, the overall success rate of NSER was 80% (24/30). The route of OT administration had no effect on NSER efficiency or the ease with which transcervical embryo flushing was performed. Both routes of OT administration can be used for cervical dilation protocol. Discarding ewes with anatomical features precluding cervical penetration is highly recommended to increase the efficacy of NSER in sheep.  相似文献

利用能繁母羊在棉茬地进行冬季放牧,探讨了棉茬地放牧对母羊繁殖性能及血液生化指标的影响。结果表明,棉茬地地上生物量为6 178.6 kg·hm-2,其中棉叶、棉桃壳等可采食部位约占65%。母羊的日均干物质采食量为1.98kg·只-1。与该区域舍饲母羊群相比,棉茬地放牧母羊后羔羊初生重偏低而死亡率高达12.87%,繁殖成活率降低(P0.05);随着放牧时间的推移,母羊血液游离棉酚浓度呈上升趋势,放牧结束时血液游离棉酚浓度达到131.70mg·L-1;放牧组母羊的血液中白细胞数量显著高于舍饲组(P0.05),而血小板数目、尿素氮浓度和镁浓度显著低于舍饲为主的母羊群(P0.05)。棉茬地作为冷季放牧利用地,能降低饲养成本,但对母羊的繁殖能力和健康有一定影响,建议在棉茬地放牧的同时进行适当补饲。  相似文献

The objective of this experiment was to develop a procedure for immunizing ewes against melatonin that would alter the effects of changing photoperiod on seasonal reproduction and prolactin secretion. Ewes were immunized against human serum albumin (HSA) as controls (n = 9) or a melatonin-human serum albumin conjugate (0.25 mg; n = 10) on December 14th (Day 0) and boosted 9 times. They were maintained on natural photoperiod and then transferred indoors and exposed to long days for 35 d, followed by short days for 146 d, long days for 93 d, and short days for a further 123 d. Antibody titers to melatonin (at a serum dilution of 1:1,250) were significantly higher in immunized ewes (27.3 ± 6.6%) than controls (0.7 ± 0.1%; P < 0.001). At the end of the experiment, antibody titers in immunized ewes (at dilution of 1:50) were higher in blood (43.7 ± 8.2%) than in cerebrospinal fluid (10.8 ± 3.9%; P < 0.05), and highly correlated (r2 = 0.746). Onset of the breeding season was advanced slightly after the second transfer from long to short days in immunized ewes (April 12 ± 3 d) compared with controls (April 25 ± 3 d; P < 0.05). Mean serum prolactin concentrations were lower (P < 0.05) in melatonin-immunized ewes compared with controls on natural photoperiod, after transfer from long to short days, during long days, and after the second transfer from long to short days. In conclusion, despite melatonin-immunization increasing antibody titers in blood and cerebrospinal fluid, and decreasing prolactin concentrations over much of the experiment, minimal effects on the timing of reproductive transitions in the ewes were evident. This discrepancy between the response of the prolactin and reproductive axes to melatonin immunization supports the hypothesis of a dual site of action of melatonin, with melatonin acting in the pituitary gland to mediate the effects of photoperiod on prolactin secretion and in the mediobasal hypothalamus to affect reproductive responses.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to determine the effects of short-term feed withdrawal on reproductive and metabolic hormones during the luteal phase of the estrous cycle in mature ewes. Mature ewes observed in estrus were assigned randomly to control and fasted groups (n = 10 per group Trials 1 and 2). For Trials 1 and 2, control ewes had ad libitum access to feed, whereas fasted ewes were not fed from d 7 through 11 of their estrous cycle; on d 12, all ewes were treated with 10 mg of PGF2alpha, and fasted ewes were gvien ad libitum access to feed. For Trial 1, blood samples were collected daily through fasting and at 2-h intervals following PGF2alpha for 72 h. Serum concentrations of insulin (P < or = 0.002) and IGF-I (P < or = 0.01), but not GH (P > or = 0.60), were decreased during fasting compared with fed ewes. Serum concentrations of 29 (P = 0.02) and 34 kDa (P = 0.04) IGFBP were greater in fasted ewes at 96 h after initiation of fasting than in control ewes. Two control and four fasted ewes in Trial 1 did not exhibit a preovulatory surge release of LH by 72 h. Therefore, Trial 2 was conducted so that the timing of the LH surge could be predicted following the collection of blood samples at 2-h intervals for 112 h and then at 6-h intervals until 178 h following PGF2alpha administration and realimentation. The magnitude of the preovulatory LH surge in Trial 2 was decreased (P = 0.009) and delayed (P = 0.04), and serum concentrations of estradiol were diminished (P < or = 0.03) 12 h before the LH surge in fasted ewes. Ovulation rates were not influenced (P > or = 0.32) by fasting in Trials 1 and 2. Serum concentrations of progesterone in both Trials 1 and 2 were, however, greater (P < 0.001) in fasted than in control ewes. A third trial with ovariectomized ewes was conducted to determine whether the increased serum concentrations of progesterone observed in fasted ewes during Trials 1 and 2 were ovarian-derived. Ovariectomized ewes were implanted with progesterone-containing intravaginal implants and allotted to control (n = 5) or fasted (n = 5) treatment groups and fed as described for Trials 1 and 2. Similar to intact ewes, serum concentrations of progesterone were approximately twofold greater (P < 0.001) in fasted than in control implanted ovariectomized ewes. In summary, feed withdrawal for 5 d during the luteal phase of the estrous cycle increased serum concentrations of progesterone and evoked endocrine changes that could perturb the subsequent estrous cycle.  相似文献

The effects of exogenous melatonin on reproductive performance of 737 Polypay and Polypay-cross ewes were evaluated during a late March and April breeding period. Different concentrations (2 or 10 mg) routes of administration (fed vs implanted) and durations of administration (20 or 40 d before breeding) were studied. Estrus was synchronized in all ewes using 60 mg medroxyprogesterone acetate (MAP) in a vaginal pessary. Number of mature ewes lambing/ewe present at lambing was increased (P less than .05) nearly 20% by implanting for 40 d with melatonin (75%) or by feeding either 2 (72%) or 10 mg (73%) melatonin for 40 d before spring breeding compared with untreated control ewes (54%) or ewes implanted for only 20 d before breeding (58%). Date of lambing, number of lambs born/ewes lambing and number of lambs born alive/ewe lambing were not altered significantly by treatments. Number of yearling ewes (n = 166 for ewes 1.5 yr old at lambing time) lambing/ewe present at lambing was lower (P less than .01; 26%) than that of mature ewes (n = 381, greater than or equal to 2.0 yr; 68%). We concluded that feeding 2 or 10 mg melatonin or implanting melatonin for 40 d enhanced reproductive performance and effectively overcame the restrictions of seasonality of breeding in mature ewes. In yearling ewes, 10 mg melatonin increased the number of ewes lambing.  相似文献

The effect of GnRH pretreatment on estrus detection rate, precision of estrus, and reproductive performance of postpartum beef cows synchronized to estrus using GnRH and PGF2alpha was evaluated. In Exp. 1, Angus cows (n = 87) were randomly assigned by parity, postpartum interval, and body condition score (BCS) to receive either 1) GnRH on d -7 and PGF2alpha on d 0 (GP) or 2) the GP treatment and an additional injection of GnRH on d -16 (GGP). Estrus detection and AI were conducted twice daily from d -3 to d 3. At 72 h after PGF2alpha, all animals not previously detected in estrus were bred by AI and received a concurrent injection of GnRH (TAI). Synchronized pregnancy rates were numerically increased (P = 0.15) in cows treated with GGP (55%) compared with those on the GP treatment (44%). In Exp. 2, 1,276 spring-calving, suckled beef cows in nine herds were randomized to treatments as described for Exp. 1, except that the initial GnRH injection for the GGP treatment was administered on d -14. Herd affected all indicators of reproductive performance (P < 0.05). The percentage of animals detected in estrus prematurely (d -3 to d 0; 7%) was not affected by treatment. Estrus response rate was influenced by postpartum interval (< 60 vs > or = 60; 61 vs 73%; P < 0.01) and a three-way interaction of parity, BCS, and treatment (P < 0.01). Within animals with a BCS > or = 5.5, the GGP treatment tended to increase the detection of estrus in primiparous cows (GP vs GGP; 76 vs 91%; P = 0.11) and decrease detection in multiparous cows (GP vs GGP; 78 vs 72%; P < 0.10). However, because conception rate to TAI in animals with a BCS > or = 5.5 was greater (P < 0.05) in the GGP than in the GP group (28 vs 8%, respectively), this interaction was interpreted to represent a shift in interval to estrus induced by the GGP treatment, rather than a reduction in the synchronization of ovarian function. Conception rates of animals inseminated to an observed estrus did not differ among treatments (P = 0.15). Synchronized pregnancy rate tended (P = 0.06) to be greater in GGP- (53%) than in GP-treated animals (47%). In conclusion, pretreatment with GnRH tended to increase pregnancy rates during a 6-d synchronization period, primarily through enhanced conception rates of cows bred by TAI. In contrast to our hypothesis, GnRH pretreatment did not increase the percentage of animals detected in estrus or the precision of estrus expression.  相似文献

The effect of Haemonchus contortus infection in sheep fed with a moderate and high protein content diet was evaluated in two breeds of sheep. Forty-eight Ile de France and Santa Ines lambs were maintained indoors since birth, in worm-free conditions. The lambs were allocated after weaning in four groups of six animals per breed, which were either infected or remain uninfected and given access to either a moderately or highly metabolizable protein diet. The moderately and highly metabolizable protein diets were calculated to supply 75 and 129 g metabolizable protein per kg of dry matter (MP/kg DM), respectively. The infection consisted of a trickle infection with 300 infective larvae, three times a week, for 12 weeks. Significant differences were observed for mast cell, globule leukocyte and eosinophil counts in the abomasal mucosa of the infected groups compared to the control of both breeds (P<0.05), regardless of the diet supplied. Significantly higher IgA anti-L5 antibody was detected in the infected Santa Ines groups than in the infected Ile de France groups (P<0.05). Increased metabolizable protein supply resulted in larger body weight gain and higher packed cell volumes for both breeds (P<0.05). Both breeds showed an increased ability to withstand the pathophysiological effects of H. contortus infection when given access to the highly metabolizable protein diet. However, increased metabolizable protein supply resulted in reduced worm burdens in Santa Ines lambs but not in the Ile de France lambs (P<0.05). The present results show that the increase in protein content in growing lamb diets may benefit resistance and resilience to gastrointestinal parasites but that these benefits may vary among breeds.  相似文献

Plasma cortisol and serum cholesterol, testosterone, and progesterone did not change significantly (P greater than 0.01), and significant alterations in serum albumin, calcium, and alkaline phosphatase (P less than 0.01) did not preclude use of the drug. Serum testosterone concentrations tended to decrease after 7 days of treatment, but in 2 cats returned to near-pretreatment values by day 30 of treatment, despite continued drug administration. These results were in contrast to those reported in the dog at similar and lesser dosages of ketoconazole.  相似文献
