Background: Measurement of concentrations of acute-phase proteins (APPs) is used as an aid in the diagnosis of a variety of diseases in animals.
Objective: To determine the concentration of APPs in dogs with steroid responsive meningitis-arteritis (SRMA) and other neurologic diseases.
Animals: One hundred and thirty-three dogs with neurologic diseases, 6 dogs with sepsis, and 8 healthy dogs were included in the study. Thirty-six dogs had SRMA (31 of which had monitoring), 14 dogs had other meningoencephalitides (ME), 32 had disk disease (IVDD/DLSS), 26 had tumors affecting the central nervous system (TCNS), and 25 had idiopathic epilepsy (IE).
Methods: Prospective, observational study: C-reactive protein (CRP), α2-macroglobulin (AMG), and albumin concentrations were determined in the serum or plasma. CRP was also measured in the cerebrospinal fluid.
Results: Serum CRP was significantly higher in dogs with SRMA (     = 142 μg/mL ± 75) and sepsis (     = 114 μg/mL ± 67) in comparison with dogs with other neurologic diseases (     = 2.3–21 μg/mL; P < .001). There was no significant difference detected in AMG between groups. Serum albumin concentration was significantly lower ( P < .01) in dogs with SRMA (     = 3.2 g/dL ± 0.41) than in other groups (     = 3.6–3.9 g/dL). Serum CRP concentration of SRMA dogs correlated with alkaline phosphatase levels ( r = 0.515, P = .003).
Conclusions and Clinical Importance: CRP concentrations in serum are useful in diagnosis of dogs with SRMA. Serum CRP could be used as a monitoring parameter in treatment management of these dogs.  相似文献

This study describes the occurrence of fibrocartilaginous embolism of the spinal cord (FCE) in eight juvenile Irish Wolfhounds that were presented within a period of 16 months (1996-1997). The dogs, seven males and one female between eight and 13 weeks of age, were presented because of an acute onset of abnormal locomotion. Five dogs were euthanized and FCE was diagnosed by the histomorphological presence of focal myelomalacia and Alcian blue-positive-nucleus-pulposus material in the spinal cord vasculature. Three dogs, which were thought to have FCE because of their clinical symptoms, improved with partial or almost complete return to normal locomotion. Although the observed high incidence may be a coincidence, oral information from breeders and lay reports of similar cases in journals for dog breeders from various countries suggest that FCE is a common disorder in young Irish Wolfhounds.  相似文献

An 11-year-old, spayed female giant schnauzer was presented for evaluation of chronic, progressive tetraparesis. Diagnostic imaging was consistent with intervertebral disk protrusion, and surgical decompression and stabilization were performed. Postoperatively the dog did not improve, and further imaging suggested an intramedullary mass at the level of the sixth cervical vertebra. The dog was euthanized 7 days after surgery, and a teratoma was found postmortem.  相似文献

A 7-year-old male castrated Yorkshire Terrier dog developed slowly progressive neurologic disturbances consisting of difficulties in moving the neck, lack of proprioception, and tetraparesis 4 months prior its death. Neurologic examination, computer tomography, and myelography resulted in the tentative diagnosis of intramedullary cervicothoracic spinal cord lesion. At necropsy, an intramedullary cervical spinal cord mass between C5 and C6 was noticed. Histologically, cells of this well-demarcated, nonencapsulated neoplasm were arranged in sheaths or cords separated by a fine fibrovascular stroma. The polygonal to round tumor cells were characterized by moderate pale, basophilic, and vacuolar cytoplasm and round to slightly oval, centrally located nuclei with fine-stippled heterochromatin, a single nucleolus, and a very low mitotic activity. Tumor cells lacked glial fibrillary acidic protein, vimentin, factor VIII-related, and cytokeratin antigen expression. Histologic and immunohistochemical findings led to the diagnosis of a cervical spinal cord oligodendroglioma.  相似文献

The height, width, and cross-sectional area of the vertebral canal and spinal cord along with the area ratio of spinal cord to vertebral canal in the cervical vertebra were evaluated in images obtained using computed tomography (CT). Measurements were taken at the cranial, middle, and caudal point of each cervical vertebra in eight clinically normal small breed dogs (two shih tzu, two miniature schnauzers, and four mixed breed), 10 beagles, and four German shepherds. CT myelography facilitated the delineation of the epidural space, subarachnoid space, and spinal cord except at the caudal portion of the 7th cervical vertebra. The spinal cord had a tendency to have a clear ventral border in the middle portion of the vertebral canal and lateral borders near both end plates. The height, width, and area of the vertebral canal and spinal cord in the cervical vertebra were increased as the size of dog increased. However, the ratio of the spinal cord area to vertebral canal area in the small dogs was higher than that of the larger dogs. Results of the present study could provide basic and quantitative information for CT evaluation of pathologic lesions in the cervical vertebra and spinal cord.  相似文献

The severe cardiopulmonary and electrocardiographic changes occurring after inadvertent metrizamide (Amipaque) administration into the central canal of the spinal cord are described in two dogs. These changes were characterized by respiratory arrest and severe tachyarrhythmias. The successful resuscitative measures are described and the possible mechanisms of the responses are discussed.  相似文献

An 8-year and 6-month-old female Maltese dog showed a stoop with rigidity of her cervix and back. Neurologic examination showed loss of proprioception, and deficiency of pain response. Postmortem examination revealed the neoplastic mass replacing the central area in the cervical spinal cord at the level from 4th to 5th segments. Histologically, the mass was composed of neoplastic ependymal cells. The neoplastic cells showed marked atypism, and occasionally formed ependymal rosettes. Based on the morphologic features, the tumor was diagnosed as anaplastic ependymoma. Immunohistochemistry showed that the neoplastic cells were negative for glial fibrillary acid protein, and slightly positive for vimentin and cytokeratin.  相似文献

An eight‐year‐old mixed‐breed dog was presented with progressive paraparesis. Neurological examination revealed a painful diffuse lesion between spinal cord segments T3 and L3. Magnetic resonance images displayed multi‐focal contrast enhancing spinal cord and meningeal lesions. Cytology of these lesions revealed a malignant tumour prompting euthanasia of the dog. Histopathology confirmed the cytological diagnosis and a final diagnosis of a glioblastoma multiforme was made based on immunohistochemistry.  相似文献

Steroid-responsive meningitis-arteriitis (SRMA) is a disease of dogs familiar in small animal practice for decades. A combined evaluation of IgA in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is an important diagnostic tool. It is suspected that immunpathological mechanisms are involved in the pathogenesis of SRMA because of the marked response to steroids. Excessive production of IgA seems to play a central role and might be caused by an immune reaction to self-antigens of the central nervous system (CNS). To test this hypothesis, we analyzed CSF samples from 55 dogs with SRMA using the western blot method. After blotting canine brain tissue, IgA, IgM and IgG of the CSF samples were tested for their binding to CNS antigens. We also evaluated CSF samples from 45 dogs with other brain diseases, including different encephalitides and intracranial tumors, and from healthy dogs as controls. Positive reactions (mostly IgA) were observed in the CSF samples from dogs with SRMA, different encephalitides and brain tumors (a total of 8% positive samples). The occurrence of autoantibodies against CNS structures was significantly higher in the control group "other brain diseases" than in the SRMA group (p = 0.0135). There was no significant difference in the number of positive samples between dogs with SRMA and the negative control group (healthy dogs, p = 0.1535). Despite the small number of positive samples, only dogs with abnormal findings in the CSF analysis also had autoantibodies in the CSF. There was no significant correlation between the occurrence of autoantibodies and levels of IgA, protein content and cell counts in the cerebrospinal fluid. However, there was a certain trend toward positive reactions in CSF samples with high protein content. The occurrence of autoantibodies in dogs with SRMA thus seems to be an epiphenomenona rather than the cause of the disease.  相似文献

A nine-year-old female crossbred dog was presented with tetraplegia following a fall. No vertebral abnormalities were detectable on plain radiographs of the cervical spine. Magnetic resonance imaging scans revealed absence of extraparenchymal compression and an area of oedema within the cervical spinal cord, suggesting a favourable prognosis. Following nursing care and physiotherapy, the dog recovered the ability to walk, although mild neurological deficits persisted in the left limbs.  相似文献

This study was performed on Van cats to determine the volumetric, morphometric and surface area measurement values of their cervical spinal cords (SC) and vertebral canals (CC) and the ratios between their dimensions using computed tomography (CT) images. The study also aims to reveal any biometric differences in these values between the two sexes. Spinal cord and vertebral canal CT images of 16 healthy adult Van cats (8 males and 8 females) were used in the study. First, three measurement points were selected for each vertebra on their cranial, medial and caudal sections along the sagittal axis. Next, the morphometric values were obtained using the transversal images of these measurement points. The surface areas for the SC and CC were calculated using the stereological planimetry method. The Cavalieri's principle was then used to calculate the relevant anatomic structure volumes. The obtained values were then statistically analysed. SC and CC were found to be larger in males in general, while ‘SC cranial/CC cranial’ and ‘SC medial/CC medial’ dimensions and volume ratios were found to be larger in female cats on average. Bodyweight and age values were found to have a negative correlation with SC and CC ratio, but the correlation was statistically insignificant. All SC and CC surface area and volume measurements were found to be higher in male cats (p < .05). We believe the results obtained by this study will provide valuable insight into veterinary clinicians in evaluating pathological lesions in the cervical spinal cord and vertebral canal CT scans.  相似文献

A Thoroughbred yearling was presented with neurological, radiographic, and myelographic abnormalities consistent with cervical vertebral stenotic myelopathy. Surgical correction was performed by using ventral cervical interbody fusion at 3 intervertebral spaces. The patient recovered uneventfully from surgery. The neurological status remained unchanged initially; however, significant improvement was noted 37 weeks postoperatively.  相似文献

Cavernous angioma was found in the C5-C6 spinal cord segments of a 4–month-old female Siberian Husky. The malformation appeared as vessels packed together and lined by simple endothelial cells surrounded by a thin layer of collagenous connective tissue. These vessels were not separated by neural tissue. Clinically, the dog was presented with progressive tetraparesis over a 1-month period.  相似文献

Traumatic neuroma of the cervical spinal cord was diagnosed in a 14-year-old male mixed-breed dog. A gross view showed two intradural extramedullary masses, measuring 1 and 0.6 cm in length and 0.7 and 0.4 cm in diameter, attached to the left side of the spinal cord at the level of the sixth and seventh cervical vertebrae. Microscopically, the cervical spinal masses comprised interlacing fascicles of axons and Schwann cells surrounded by collagenous stroma. Immunohistochemically, the fascicles were stained positively for neurofilament and S-100 proteins. Ultrastructurally, variably sized myelinated fibers and onion bulb-like structures were observed. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a traumatic neuroma in the cervical spinal cord of a dog.  相似文献
