A modelling approach was chosen for analyzing the effects of competition between windbreaks and crops for soil water and radiation in the Sahel. The model has a high spatial and temporal resolution to account for the heterogeneity in a windbreak-cropping system. The model was parameterised for millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.), the tree species Bauhinia rufescens Lam. and soil characteristics and weather data of Sadoré, Niger. Simulations were run for two wet years (1992 and 1993) and for a dry cropping season (1989). Simulations showed a strong yield reduction up to 2 m from the windbreak due to shading and/or water competition. For Sahelian sites with no access to groundwater, competition for water between trees and crops is likely to occur in the beginning of the rainy season. Water competition was surprisingly highest in the wet year 1992, intermediate in the dry year 1987 and lowest in the wet year 1993. Simulation results indicate that light and water competition depends on rainfall distribution and the period between the seasonal onset of tree and crop growth. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of tree coppicing on tree-crop competition in farmed parkland and in alley farming, both in semiarid Burkina Faso.Azadirachta indica A. Juss (neem) was studied in the parklands, while neem,Albizia lebbeck (L.) Benth. (albizia) andLeucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit (leucaena) were investigated in the alley farming system. The crop was sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) in both cases.Under non-coppiced neem trees in the parkland, the sorghum yield at 0–3 m distance from the tree (under the tree canopy) was 82% of open field yields at 6–9 m distance, but the difference was not significant (p=0.07). Close to trees (0–3 m distance) which had been coppiced before planting, the sorghum yield was 148% of open field yields. In alley farming, early coppicing was superior; sorghum yields were highest close to trees coppiced early and lowest close to trees coppiced late.
Résumé La présente étude se propose d'évaluer les effets de la taille sur la concurrence entre arbres et cultures dans les parcs arborés et dans les cultures en couloir, en climat semiaride (Burkina Faso). Les espèces étudiées ont été:Azadirachta indica A. Juss (neem) dans les parcs et neem,Albizia lebbeck (L.) Benth. (albizia) ainsi queLeucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit (leucaena) dans les cultures en couloir. Dans les deux cas la plante cultivée concerné a été le sorgho blanc (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench).Sous les neems non taillés des parcs, le rendement du sorgho cultivé de 0 à 3 m de l'arbre (sous le bouppier de l'arbre) a atteint 82% du rendement obtenu en plein champ, soit à une distance de 6 à 9 m de l'arbre (différence non significative,p=0.07). Une taille effectuée en début de campagne a entraîné un accroissement du rendement de 148% pour les cultures situées de 0 à 3 m de l'arbre, par rapport aux rendements en plein champ.Dans les cultures en couloir, on a constaté qu'une taille precoce est préférable, c'est à dire que les rendements de sorgho ont été supérieurs dans les lignes proches des arbres taillés tôt que dans celles proches des arbres taillés tard.

In the temperate cropping regions of Australia, the benefits of shelter from windbreaks are often offset by tree-crop competition. The aim of this trial was to quantify microclimate and crop growth close to shade-cloth windbreaks with various orientations, to determine the effect of shelter and above-ground competition on the growth and productivity of wheat (Triticum aestivum) and lupins (Lupinus angustifolius) in the absence of below-ground competition. The trial was conducted in southwestern Australia in 2000 and 2001. The windbreaks modified windspeed, temperature, light and rainfall both spatially and temporally. Consequently, there were spatial differences in the phenology, morphology and productivity of the crops and the incidence of fungal disease adjacent to the windbreaks. Mean grain yield within three times the height of the windbreaks (H) was 97, 102, 82, and 98% of yield beyond 3 H on the northern, eastern, southern and western aspects respectively for wheat and 99, 87, 90, and 87% respectively for lupins. Changes in windspeed and rainfall were not significantly correlated with the relative yield of either crop. However, photosynthetically active radiation was significantly correlated with yield for wheat but not for lupins. Given these responses, and the practical difficulties of reducing below-ground tree-crop competition to the point where light is more limiting for crop growth than water, it is recommended that windbreaks continue to be oriented primarily to protect against damaging winds, rather than to minimise shading in the medium and low rainfall areas of Australia.  相似文献

Three process-based approaches to agroforestry modelling are described. These are (a) coupling a continuous-canopy forest model (Hybrid) and tropical crop model (PARCH); (b) coupling an individual-tree model (MAESTRO) with a crop model (PARCH); and (c) incorporating a combined model of evaporation and radiation interception by neighbouring species (ERIN).The coupled Hybrid/PARCH was parameterised for maize and eucalyptus, and run in five contrasting weather-types. As expected, shade is the most important factor limiting yield in wet sites; water in dry sites. Year-to-year variability in crop yield is increased by light and water competition. MAESTRO/PARCH was run with similar assumptions, and gave comparable yield predictions, except at the driest site where it allows small areas distant from the tree sufficient water to produce a modest yield. Hybrid/PARCH predicted total crop failure in the same climate. Yields on drier sites were higher in the shade, but water competition was severe close to the tree.ERIN is simpler than the above models, but is unique in including the transfer of heat and water vapour between the two canopies. Transpiration from a moist understorey can humidify air in the overstorey, and reduce its transpiration; whilst a dry understorey will give off sensible heat, which increases the vapour pressure deficit in the overstorey and causes its transpiration to increase. Changes in overstorey transpiration due to fluxes from the understorey may approach 15–20%.  相似文献

  • Context Okoume (Aucoumea klaineana) is the most important timber species in Gabon, while being classified as vulnerable in the IUCN red list. Thousands of growth measurements for this species have been performed since the 1950s but, because of a lack of integrated analysis, did not bring a consistent view on its growth pattern.
  • Aims This study aims at disentangling the effects of tree size and local competition on tree growth.
  • Methods A growth model was fitted for okoume, using data from seven sites in Gabon and Congo. The growth model was designed to be useful for forest management, which means that it relied on variables that could be computed using forest inventory data.
  • Results A lognormal growth model with a negative response to stand basal area was selected. A significant residual site effect on growth was found, with a slower growth in the sites near the border of the natural range of okoume than in the sites far from it.
  • Conclusion Growth strongly responded to local stand attributes such as tree density and basal area. Growth decrease with stand age in monodominant okoume stands was correctly predicted, although tree age was not incorporated into the model.

Consequent to recent recognition of agricultural soils as carbon (C) sinks, agroforestry practices in the West African Sahel (WAS) region have received attention for their C sequestration potential. This study was undertaken in the Ségou region of Mali that represents the WAS, to examine the extent of C sequestration, especially in soils, in agroforestry systems. Five land-use systems were selected in farmers’ fields [two traditional parkland systems, two improved agroforestry systems (live fence and fodder bank), and a so-called abandoned land]. Soil samples taken from three depths (0–10 cm, 10–40 cm, and 40–100 cm) were fractionated into three size classes (2,000–250 μm, 250–53 μm, and <53 μm) and their C contents determined. Whole-soil C contents, g kg−1 soil, across three depths ranged from 1.33–4.69 in the parklands, 1.11–4.42 in live fence, 1.87–2.30 in fodder bank, and 3.69–5.30 in abandoned land; and they correlated positively with silt + clay content. Using the 13C isotopic ratio as an indicator of relative contribution of trees (C3 plants) and crops (C4 plants) to soil C, more tree-origin C was found in larger particle size and surface soil and indicated that long-term tree presence promoted storage of protected C in deeper soil. Existing long-standing agroforestry practices of the region such as the parklands seemed to have little advantage for sequestering additional C, whereas improved agroforestry practices such as live fence and fodder bank introduced in treeless croplands seemed to be advantageous.  相似文献

In a field study on bamboo (Bambusa arundinacea (Retz.) Willd.) hedgerow systems of Kerala, we tested the following three hypotheses: (1) Effective root foraging space is a function of crown spread, (2) Proximity of trees depress lateral spread of roots in mixed species systems and (3) The closer the trees are located the greater will be the subsoil root activity which in turn facilitates active absorption of nutrients from deeper layers of the soil profile. Root distribution of boundary planted bamboo and root competition with associated trees in two binary mixtures, teak (Tectona grandis)-bamboo and Malabar white pine (Vateria indica)-bamboo, were evaluated using modified logarithmic spiral trenching and 32P soil injection techniques respectively. Excavation studies indicate that rooting intensity declined linearly with increasing lateral distance. Larger clumps manifested wider foraging zones. Eighty three per cent of the large clumps (>4.0 m dia.) extended roots beyond 8 m while only 33% of the small (<2.5 m dia.) clumps extended roots up to 8 m. Highest root counts were found in the 10–20 cm layer with nearly 30% of total roots. Although nearness of bamboo clumps depressed root activity of teak and Vateria in the surface layers of the soil profile, root activity in the deeper layers was stimulated. 32P recovery was higher when applied at 50-cm depth than at 25-cm depth implying the safety net role of tree roots for leached down nutrients. Inter specific root competition can be regulated by planting crops 8–9 m away from the bamboo clumps and/or by canopy reduction treatments. At sites in the Sahel where windbreaks are used to control wind erosion, management strategies are required to minimise competition for water between trees and crops. Uptake of water by windbreak trees was therefore studied in experiments designed to compare water use among tree species, assess which variables exert most control over transpiration and determine the source of water transpired by windbreak trees. Transpiration and soil-water extraction by Acacia nilotica, Acacia holosericea and Azadirachta indica trees in windbreaks were measured at the ICRISAT Sahelian Centre, Niger. Coupling of windbreaks to the atmosphere was evaluated and a stable isotope technique was used to compare utilisation of groundwater by windbreaks and crops at two sites in Niger with different water table levels. Azadirachta indica used least water, probably as a result of lower stomatal conductances, since windbreaks exhibited good physiological control over transpiration. The potential for competition for water was most severe with Acacia nilotica and Acacia holosericea, as they extracted large quantities of water through lateral roots, and at the location where trees could not access groundwater. At such sites, the effects of competition on crop productivity should be minimised by planting tree species with low water requirements and by using pruning to limit tree transpiration.This revised version was published online in November 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

In developing or designing agroforestry systems, various concerns have to be addressed namely: (1) economic; (2) biological and physical; and (3) silvicultural and ecological considerations. A general model was constructed relating forest growth to nitrogen uptake and the partitioning of biomass among leaves, fine roots and woody tissues. The model was used to assess the influence of the allocation pattern on stand wood production, individual tree growth and nutrient cycling for even-aged conifer stands with adequate water, but suboptimal nitrogen. Stand wood production was maximized by quite low allocation to roots for specified amounts of plant-available nitrogen. However, the wood production of the individual was maximized by higher allocation to roots, because large root systems enhanced the ability of individuals to compete for nutrients. The optimal fine root allocation for a competing individual was less than 5% of total production for adequate nitrogen, but rose to 30% as nitrogen became more limiting, in general agreement with observed allocation patterns for fertilized versus non-fertilized forests. The high allocation to roots predicted for competitors may also enhance long-term productivity by decreasing nutrient losses from the ecosystem. Although collective, short-term stand wood production could be increased by shifting growth from roots to stems, this strategy may increase nutrient losses, ultimately decreasing productivity.  相似文献

Tree and windbreak species considered for the Southern Sahelian Zone (SSZ) of West Africa have to be evaluated following multiple criteria such as fast establishment, shelter efficiency, production of feed for livestock, and firewood. An on-station experiment was conducted on a sandy soil in southwest Niger between 1988 and 1993 to assess the establishment, growth, nutritive, and calorific values of seven species considered for windbreaks:Andropogon gayanus, Bauhinia rufescens, Acacia holosericea, Acacia nilotica, Acacia senegal, Faidherbia albida, andAzadirachta indica. Mortality and stem diameter were monitored twice a year. From 20 months after planting (MAP) onwards, species were annually trimmed to 2 m height and to 1 m sidewards of the main stem. Fresh and dry weight of leaves, twigs, wood, and fruits were recorded. Leaves were analyzed for crude protein (CP) and metabolizable energy (ME) content. Wood was analyzed for its gross calorific value and its ash content. At 56 MAP, all species had less than 5% morality, except forA. holosericea, which had a mortality rate of 15.9%.A. indica andA. holosericea showed the highest stem diameter among species with 12.2 and 11.8 cm, respectively, at 56 MAP.A. senegal had the highest dry matter production with 22.3 t ha–1 at 56 MAP, followed byA. indica (12.0 t ha–1),A. holosericea (11.7 t ha–1) andB. rufescens (11.2 t ha–1), butA. holosericea was most productive at earlier harvests. OnlyA. senegal (6.4 t ha–1) andA. indica (5.1 t ha–1) had a significant wood production, whereasA. holosericea (5.7 t ha–1) had the highest phyllodes production. Leaves ofA. senegal andA. indica had highest CP contents of 258 and 214 g kg–1, respectively. The leaves of all species exceptA. gayanus had a higher CP:ME ratio than natural pasture in the region. The calorific values of firewood did not differ significantly among the species.A. nilotica, the species with one of the lowest firewood production, had the highest Fuelwood Value Index of 6.6. The choice of species for planting trees and windbreaks in the SSZ must be oriented along these criteria. Further research should be directed towards cost-benefit analyses, land tenure and property rights in combination with surveys on local knowledge of rural people.  相似文献

The ALWAYS model simulates the biophysical functioning of a silvopastoral plot – here the broad-leaved tree — pasture — sheep association — and its management, according to the interactions between the different components of the system. The model was calibrated for two silvopastoral plots with contrasting soil and climate: at Lamartine in central France (wet upland climate), and at Cessous in southern France (a moderate hot and dry Mediterranean climate). The actual plot management recorded in the field was used in the model (and particularly date and number of grazing animals) and the model was run for different time series (from 2 to 100 years) depending on the process we wanted to evaluate, grass and animal production or tree growth. Models outputs were consistent with recorded data on the field and we concluded that the model can correctly simulate the behaviour of a silvopastoral plot in terms of tree growth, grass production, animal grazing and interactions between the different components. It permitted also to make consistent choices and compare different strategies of silvopastoral plots management. The improvement of some biophysical processes that are very simplified in the model is required to produce better accurate predictive values of sward or tree production. But a much more complex model will require more data for its parametrization and more time to run, precluding its use in many situations.This revised version was published online in November 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

In response to the ongoing multidimensional change occurring in the external environment, forest sector companies must adapt or create new business models. Our primary objectives are to illustrate the use of an expanded Business Model Canvas for business model design as well as highlight additional evaluation tools that we have developed. We do this via an example from a medium-sized US manufacturer of value-added wood products that desired to design a business model for export market entry. We introduce a method for identifying business models, supported by an evaluation tool and core value calculations. The lessons learned are discussed.  相似文献

The beneficial effects of shelterbelts and windbreaks have been convincingly demonstrated in the temperate regions of the world. Investigations conducted on the biological effects of windbreaks are relatively few in arid and semiarid zones. In the semiarid regions of Haryana under Social Forestry programmes large scale plantations along roads, canals, fields, etc. were undertaken. In this region, an area having a windbreak of Dalbergia sissoo (18 years old) was selected and cotton was raised in the agricultural fields. The tree belt is able to reduce the windspeed by 15 to 45% depending upon season and wind speed. Observations on morphological characters and crop yield revealed that the belt height had a significant effect on plant growth. In general growth and cotton productivity increased upto distance of four times the tree height to the leeward of belt. Depending upon the orientation of tree belt, an increase in cotton yield was found to be 4 to 10%. Plant growth (in terms of leaf area, leaf number, plant height) and yield (seed cotton production) were observed to be high in sheltered area as compared to open fields. The results indicate that windbreak establishment should be adopted and integrated to a whole farming system, in semiarid regions.  相似文献

Fruit trees play an important nutritional role for livelihoods of rural people in the West African Sahel through provision of energy and nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and proteins. Research on the domestication of local fruit trees has started recently through projects concentrating on some of the most important indigenous species of dry West Africa, i.e. Adansonia digitata, Parkia biglobosa, Tamarindus indica, Vitellaria paradoxa and Ziziphus mauritiana. We present a status of finalised and ongoing domestication research with the aim of defining research gaps that would need to be covered by future research activities to obtain higher yields and better quality fruits. Germplasm collection in central West Africa has been intense compared to elsewhere in the species?? distribution areas, but conservation status of the material is poor since it is only planted in few trials. Knowledge of genetic parameters, especially for fruit traits, is almost absent, but characterisation of genotypes is underway for some of the species. Mating systems and patterns are still unknown for many species. Efficient vegetative propagation based on simple techniques was shown to be possible for all species except P. biglobosa. In order to secure immediate as well as long term gains, we recommend combining clonal propagation of selected plus individuals with recombination and breeding of selected genotypes. We discuss whether local institutions in the Sahel have the financial capacity to carry out long term breeding programmes, and suggest that efforts should be made to find new ways of disseminating improved germplasm.  相似文献
