A 4 × 3 factorial study was conducted to evaluate the effect of four experimental diets (a control diet and a 0, 50, and 100% fish meal replacement diet) and the period of time Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, were fed those diets (0, 20, and 40 days) on the alkaline proteolytic activity of the animals’ digestive tract, as well as their potential interaction. Significant differences (at P < 0.05) and a significant interaction were observed among dietary treatments for the alkaline proteolytic activity of tilapia after 40 days of feeding. This study confirmed that, under these experimental conditions, a 50% fish meal replacement formulation elicited the highest alkaline proteolytic activity in the digestive tract of tilapia, which resulted in the highest final weight and specific growth rate (SGR), but further research is needed to establish the relative contribution of the alkaline proteases to the overall proteolytic activity of this omnivorous fish species.  相似文献

To examine the feeding activity characteristics of Japanese sea catfish Plotosus japonicus, access to feed box (feeding activity) and the number of food pellets consumed (food intake) were recorded under laboratory conditions. When fed ad libitum under a 12:12 h light–dark (LD) cycle, all fish exhibited feeding activity and consumed food during the dark period. Feeding activity increased in the presence of food, and this increased activity level continued for several days after food removal. During restricted food availability within the light period of the LD cycle, seven of nine fish exhibited food-anticipatory activity (FAA) both before and after the 12:00 food-restricted time. This FAA persisted under constant light conditions (in nine of nine fish). The average circadian free-running period was 24 h. These results suggest that P. japonicus exhibits a nocturnal feeding activity rhythm, which may be synchronized by a food-restricted time.  相似文献

Incomplete eye migration is one of the major problems in intensive production of juvenile Atlantic halibut. More than 60% of an average juvenile population reared according to best practice suffers from this abnormality. In commercial production, these fish are discharged and represent a substantial economic loss and a large welfare problem. In the present investigation it is demonstrated that by controlling diurnal light and darkness periods together with a meal based feeding regime, incomplete eye migration can be dramatically reduced in production systems for Atlantic halibut.Control groups were reared under continuous light conditions, whereas the experimental groups were given 7 h of darkness and 17 h of light during a 24 hour cycle, in a period lasting from 12 to 35 days post first-feeding. Otherwise both groups were reared under continuous light conditions. All larvae were fed short time enriched Artemia supplied two times daily.The experimental conditions did not affect the overall growth or survival up to day 85 after first feeding. However, 27 ± 3% of the fry reared under continuous light conditions had complete eye migration, whereas in juveniles reared under shifting light and darkness conditions, complete eye migration was 85 ± 7%. These results represent a major improvement in production systems for Atlantic halibut juveniles.  相似文献

Phytoplankton pigment concentrations in the surface sediments of a fish and oyster farm in Dapeng Cove, South China Sea, were measured monthly to investigate the effects of mariculture on the environment from December 2011 to December 2012. The highest contents of the identified phytopigments, sulphides and total organic carbon in the surface sediments were all found at the fish farm, followed by the oyster farm; the lowest contents were detected at the control site. Fucoxanthin in the surface sediments was the most abundant carotenoid and was significantly correlated with chlorophyll a (Chl a; r = 0.922, < 0.01). This finding suggested that the deposited diatoms could be the main source of the Chl a concentration. Besides a differential sedimentation of phytoplankton (i.e. higher downflux at fish and oyster site than that at control site), we assume that the extent of pigment diminution from the fish site to control site was also controlled by the chemical conditions of the surface sediments. The fish farm provided the most optimum preservation conditions for the phytopigments and was a good sink for phytodetritus among the three sites because of its anoxic and reductive characteristics. Phytoplankton pigments could be useful biomarkers to evaluate the influence of mariculture on sediment environment.  相似文献

Fish reproduction is subjected to worrying trends in many aquatic environments. In this study, we report the absence of histological and biochemical alterations in fish sampled in a low contaminated site (characterised by the absence of detectable oestrogenic activity and mutagenicity in sediment extracts). A total of 474 roach (Rutilus rutilus) were monthly sampled during 18 months, and no intersex fish were recorded after careful histological examination, thus indicating that the incidence of this phenomenon may be very low under natural conditions. Furthermore, mean male plasma vitellogenin concentration was 24 ng ml−1 and was only slightly elevated during the spawning period (up to 120 ng ml−1) indicating that these low values may be characteristic of a low contaminated site. Of the male roach, 45.3% were sampled, a sex-ratio that did not significantly deviated from the expected 1:1 ratio between male and female. Results also showed that natural conditions can greatly affect the reproductive cycle of roach. Gametogenesis showed a biphasic pattern with first gonad maturation between September and December and a final maturation occurring at the end of winter/early spring. Under decreasing temperatures, particularly below 6°C, gametogenesis was stopped or even regressed with secondary oocytes becoming rare under histological observation. Conversely, elevated temperatures during the winter lead to an earlier gonad maturation.  相似文献

This study investigated the effect of n‐3 to n‐6 fatty acid ratios in broodstock diets on reproduction performance, fatty acid composition of eggs and gonads of tongue sole Cynoglossus semilaevis. Broodstock were fed five isonitrogenous and isoenergetic diets for 60 days. The supplemented lipids were prepared by a combination of fish oil and soybean oil inclusion FO (fish oil); FSO1 (fish oil: soybean oil = 7:1); FSO2 (fish oil: soybean oil = 2.2:1); FSO3 (fish oil: soybean oil = 1:1); FSO4 (fish oil: soybean oil = 1:4.3) as lipid sources with different n‐3 to n‐6 fatty acid ratios 10.40, 5.21, 2.81, 1.71 and 0.87. Results showed that relative fecundity, fertilization rate and survival rate of larvae at 7 days posthatching were all higher in broodstock fed FSO1 and FSO2 diet and significantly (< 0.05) decreased in groups fed FSO3 and FSO4 diets. The best result in starvation tolerance test was obtained in FSO2 diet. The present study suggests that n‐3 and n‐6 PUFA ratio in broodstock diet has a considerable effect on spawning performance, egg and larval quality for C. semilaevis.  相似文献

The effect of aqueous extract of Cratoxylum formosum on innate immune response and disease resistance in tilapia Oreochromis niloticus was investigated. The fish were fed diets containing 0% (control), 0.5% (diet 1), 1% (diet 2), and 1.5% (diet 3) of C. formosum aqueous extract for 30 days. At the end of the experimental period, parameters of innate immune response including phagocytosis of blood leukocytes, lysozyme activity in plasma, and respiratory bust activity were examined. Feeding the fish with diet 2 and diet 3 for 20 days enhanced phagocytic activity and for 30 days stimulated lysozyme and respiratory burst activities. Diet 1 increased the phagocytic activity at 30 days, but did not affect the other measured parameters. All parameters were not significantly changed (P > 0.05) in the control group throughout the experiment. Following 30 days of feeding, fish were infected with S. agalactiae. The cumulative mortalities of bacterial-infected tilapia that were fed diet 1, diet 2, and diet 3 were 56, 12, and 10%, respectively, compared with 85% in the control group. These results indicate that the aqueous extract of C. formosum may elevate the innate immune response and enhance disease resistance in tilapia.  相似文献

An 8-week feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the use of local poultry by-product meal (PBM) in replacement of imported fishmeal in the diets of cobia, Rachycentron canadum. Six isolipidic (12%) and isoproteic (45%) experimental diets were formulated using PBM to replace fishmeal at 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100% dietary protein. Eleven juvenile cobia (initial mean weight of 30.7 ± 0.78 g) were randomly stocked in 300-L circular fibreglass tanks and hand-fed based on the total biomass of each tank, twice a day at 0900 h and 1500 h. The fish were group weighed at 2-week intervals to monitor their growth performance in order to adjust the feeding ratio. At the end of the feeding trial, weight gains (WGs) ranging from 221 to 322% were obtained. The specific growth rate (SGR), WG and protein efficiency ratio (PER) for fish fed with PBM-based diets were not significantly different (P > 0.05) when compared to fish fed the control diet. The best SGR was recorded for fish fed with 60PBM diet, which was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than those fed the control diet with values at 2.40 ± 0.01 and 1.97 ± 0.26%/day, respectively. The FCR of 1.83 ± 0.05 for fish fed the 60PBM diet was not significantly different (P > 0.05) when compared to those fed the control diet. The PBM source and dietary level did not significantly (P > 0.05) affect the hepatosomatic index of the fish. The results from this study suggested that PBM could replace 100% dietary fishmeal without adversely affecting the growth performance, but an optimal replacement level at approximately 60% was recommended for better growth performance and efficient feed utilization.  相似文献

Light intensity within a vertical‐slot fishway was manipulated to determine the effect on fish movement. Three treatments (darkness, low light, artificial light) were tested with natural daylight used as a control. Light intensity varied from 0 to 1,692 lux for the three treatments and from 1 to 4,550 lux for the control. Light intensity outside the fishway ranged from 31 to 80 900 lux. A total of 64 385 fish were collected from six species. The abundance of Australian smelt Retropinna semoni (Webber), unspecked hardyhead Craterocephalus stercusmuscarum fulvus Ivantsoff, Crowley and Allen, bony herring Nematalosa erebi (Günther), carp gudgeon Hypseleotris spp. and Eastern gambusia Gambusia holbrooki (Girard) moving upstream reduced significantly under low‐light conditions. Conversely, movement of macroinvertebrates (freshwater shrimp Macrobrachium australiense Holthuis and freshwater prawn Paratya australiensis Kemp) increased at low‐light intensities. The number of fish moving under artificial light (28 617) was similar to that under natural daylight (33 919). Movements of Australian freshwater fish and macroinvertebrates were found to be influenced by changes in light intensity. Instream structures that alter light conditions, such as road culverts, may thus act as behavioural barriers to fish movement, and this could be mitigated by the provision of natural or artificial light.  相似文献

The present study aimed at investigating the effects of Nerium indicum leaf extract on the blood electrolytes of Heteropneustes fossilis for short- and long term. Fish were subjected to Nerium indicum leaf extract for short term (11.27 mg/L i.e. 0.8 of 96 h LC50) and long term (2.81 mg/L i.e. 0.2 of 96 h LC50). Fish were killed on each time intervals from control and experimental (Nerium indicum) groups after 24, 48, 72, and 96 h in short-term exposure and after 7, 14, 21, and 28 days in long-term experiment. Blood samples were analyzed for calcium and inorganic phosphate levels. Acute exposure of Nerium indicum leaf extract caused a progressive decrease in the serum calcium levels after 48 h in fish H. fossilis, which persists till the close of the experiment (96 h). The serum inorganic phosphate levels remain unaffected till 48 h in the Nerium indicum leaf extract–exposed fish. After 72 and 96 h, the levels exhibit a decrease. Chronic Nerium indicum leaf extract treatment provoked a decrease in serum calcium levels at day 14. This decrease continues till 28 days. The serum phosphate level of the Nerium indicum leaf extract–treated fish decreases on day 14 and 21. However, on day 28, the levels become close to the normal values. We conclude that Nerium indicum leaf extract exposure alters the blood electrolytes of the fish, thus causing physiological disturbances which might affect seriously the normal vital functions, growth rate, reproduction, and their survival in nature.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of dried fairy shrimp Streptocephalus sirindhornae meal (FS) on skin pigmentation and carotenoid deposition in flowerhorn cichlid. Six experimental diets including three treatments of FS at 10% (FS10), 20% (FS20) and 30% (FS30), two dried Spirulina sp. meal (SP) at 6% (SP6) and 12% (SP12), and a control diet (a basal diet without FS or SP) were offered for 90 days. The results demonstrate an increase in the flowerhorn cichlid skin pigmentation from alternative carotenoid feeding. Fish fed the FS diet displayed higher ( 0.05) chroma and redness values than those fed with a SP diet. The hue value (measure for skin pigmentation) was high when fish were fed with FS20 for 30 and 60 days ( 0.01). However, fish also showed high hue values when fed for 90 days with FS10 ( 0.01). The FS20 treatment gave better results than other treatments in terms of total carotenoid, canthaxanthin, astaxanthin and β‐carotene concentration in the skin and musculature. The optimum level of FS in flowerhorn cichlid diets for achieving the highest skin pigmentation was 20%.  相似文献

The present study investigated the effects of combination of dietary Bacillus subtilis and trans‐cinnamic acid on serum biochemical parameters, innate immune responses and resistance of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss to Yersinia ruckeri. Six experimental groups of fish with mean weights of 20.58 ± 0.35 g were used in the study. Five experimental groups of fish were fed diets containing Bacillus subtilis (107 per gram) or a mix of the Bacillus subtilis (BS) and trans‐cinnamic acid (25 mg/kg‐25trcBS, 50 mg/kg‐50trcBS, 75 mg/kg‐75 trcBS, 150 mg/kg‐150 trcBS), whereas an additive‐free basal diet served as the control (Cont). In this study, an increase was observed in granulocyte percentage, respiratory burst activity, phagocytic activity, phagocytic index, myeloperoxidase activity and total antiprotease activity especially in fish fed with mix of the BS and trans‐cinnamic acid‐supplemented diets (p < .05). Moreover, at the end of the 20‐day challenge period the survival rates and antibody titre (p < .05), and relative per cent survival were higher in the BS group and all trcBS groups compared with control group. As a conclusion, the results in the present study show that feeding rainbow trout with diets containing a mix of B. subtilis and trans‐cinnamic acid over a 60‐day period might be sufficient for improving fish immune responses and disease resistance against Y. ruckeri.  相似文献

Female Japanese chub mackerel Scomber japonicus of the Tsushima Current subpopulation were collected during the spawning season from March to May 2001. A total of 137 adult females were caught between midnight and daybreak. A considerable number of fish displayed new postovulatory follicles (POF), whereas there was no evidence of germinal vesicle breakdown or hydrated oocytes in any of the fish collected. This suggests a daily spawning synchronicity toward midnight. To estimate the spawning frequency (S), the female reproductive state was classified into four criteria based on the degenerative stage of the POFs and the developmental stage of the oocytes. To stage the POFs according to age and determine the stage duration, ovaries from S. japonicus were induced to spawn in the laboratory and were sampled 0–72 h after ovulation at appropriate intervals. The average S, which is evaluated from four different indices, was 16.9%, corresponding to the average female chub mackerel spawned every 5.9 days (8.5 times) during the 50 days.  相似文献

The major carp Catla catla is a popular freshwater edible fish and an extensively cultured species in India. However, basic information on the physiology of reproduction is lacking in this species. By virtue of its surface feeding habit, it maintains close contact with environmental light, and is a species of choice for the study of temporal organization of reproduction under natural and experimental conditions for understanding environmental and/or endocrine mechanisms that control the annual reproductive cycle. The present review covers information gathered in recent years to emphasize the temporal pattern of reproductive events and the importance of photoperiod and melatonin, a hormone of the pineal gland that links the environment with the endocrine system in the regulation of reproduction. Finally, the outcome of the research is discussed in terms of its direct and indirect applications to aquaculture of this species with a view to manipulate its breeding at a desired time of the year to meet market demand.  相似文献

The present study investigated the effects of dietary trans‐cinnamic acid (TrCin) on growth performance, biochemical composition, fatty acid composition, blood biochemistry, antioxidant status, digestive enzyme and liver antioxidant gene (EF1α, SOD1, SOD2, CAT, GPX1, GPX4, GR and GST) expression responses of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss. Five experimental groups of fish with mean weights of 17.49 ± 0.08 g were used in the study; four of them were fed with TrCin‐supplemented diets (0.25 g/kg TrCin25, 0.50 g/kg TrCin50, 0.75 g/kg TrCin75 and 1.50 g/kg TrCin150), whereas an additive‐free basal diet served as the control (Cntr). At the end of the 60‐day feeding trial, the growth performance, biochemical composition and fatty acid composition were similar for all experimental groups. A decrease was observed in intestinal and stomach pH, serum triglyceride and AST, ALT, LDH and ALP levels in fish fed with especially 0.50 g/kg TrCin‐supplemented diet. Moreover, dietary TrCin especially at 0.50 g/kg incorporation level significantly increased the serum SOD and liver SOD2, CAT, GST, GPX1, GPX4 and GR gene expression responses. As a conclusion, feeding rainbow trout for a period of 60 days with a diet containing 0.50 g/kg TrCin might be sufficiently enough to improve the levels of antioxidant enzymes and health status in fish.  相似文献

In this study, we have investigated the effects of Porphyridium cruentum (Rodophyta) as a natural pigment source and astaxanthin and β-carotene as synthetic pigment sources on the skin colour of cichlid fish (Cichlasoma severum sp., Heckel 1840), which are generally light orange with white patches and becomes shiny orange in the reproductive phase. The fish were fed diets containing 50 mg kg−1 astaxanthin and β-carotene, and P. cruentum powder. The amount of both natural and synthetic pigment sources given as feed was 50 mg kg−1, and the experiment was continued for 50 days. Total carotenoid content of the fish was determined spectrophotometrically at the end of the experiment. As a result, while a visible change of colour in the skin of the fish fed on the feed containing astaxanthin was observed with 0.34 ± 0.2 mg g−1 of pigment accumulation, a relatively small change of colour was observed in the skin of other fish that were fed on the feed containing P. cruentum and β-carotene with 0.22 ± 0.2 mg g−1 and 0.26 ± 0.1 mg g−1 of pigment accumulations, respectively. Therefore, it was determined that these pigment sources have an effect on the colour of cichlid fish.  相似文献

Bacillus circulans PB7, isolated from the intestine of Catla catla, was evaluated for use as a probiotic supplement in the feeds for the fingerlings of Catla catla. The effect of supplement on the growth performance, feed utilization efficiency, and immune response was evaluated. Catla fingerlings (ave. wt. 6.48 ± 0.43 g) were fed diets supplemented with 2 × 104 (feed C1), 2 × 105 (feed C2), and 2 × 106 (feed C3) B. circulans PB 7 cells per 100 g feed for 60 days at 5% of the body weight per day in two equal instalments in triplicate treatments. The control feed (CC) was not supplemented with the B. circulans. All the feeds were isocaloric and isonitrogenous. Fish fed with feed C2 displayed better growth, significantly (P ≤ 0.05) highest RNA/DNA ratio, a lower feed conversion ratio (FCR), and a higher protein efficiency ratio (PER) than the other experimental diets. Highest carcass protein and lipid was also observed in the fish fed C2 feed compared to the others. Significantly (P ≤ 0.05), highest protease was recorded in fish fed feed C2 (47.9 ± 0.016) and lowest in fish fed feed C3 (32.10 ± 0.009), where α-amylase activity did not differ significantly (P ≤ 0.05) beyond the lowest inclusion level. ALP, ACP, GOT, and GPT in the liver of Catla catla were the highest (P ≤ 0.05) in fish fed C2 feed. The highest TSP, albumin, and globulin was observed in fish treated with C2 feed after 60 days feeding trial, but the lowest glucose level was observed in the same treatment. After the feeding trial, the non-specific immunity levels and disease resistance of fish were also studied. Phagocytic ratio, phagocytic index, and leucocrit value were the highest in fish fed feed C2. After the feeding trial, the fish were challenged for 10 days by bath exposure to Aeromonas hydrophila (AH1) (105c.f.u. ml−1 for 1 h, and, after 7 days, 107c.f.u. ml−1 for 1 h). Highest survival percentage was observed in fish fed with feed C2 compared with only 6.66% in the controls, which indicated the effectiveness of B. circulans PB 7 in reducing disease caused by A. hydrophila.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of dietary humic acid sodium salt on growth performance, haemato‐immunological and physiological responses, and resistance of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss to Yersinia ruckeri. The experimental fish were divided into four groups; three of them were fed with humic acid incorporated diets (0.3% H3, 0.6% H6, 1.2% H12) and an additive free basal diet served as the control. Growth performance and haematological parameters of rainbow trout were not affected by humic acid supplemented diets (p > 0.05). However, dietary humic acid especially with 0.6% incorporation significantly increased stomach pepsin, intestinal trypsin and lipase activities p < 0.05. Following 60 days of feeding trial, fish were challenged with Yersinia ruckeri for 20 days. At the end of the challenge period, significantly higher (p < 0.05) survival rates were found in the 6% humic acid group compared to all other experimental treatment. Thus humic acid might replace antibiotics in diets for rainbow trout to control yersiniosis.  相似文献

Distinguishing hatchery‐reared fishes from wild conspecifics can be required to quantify the success of augmentation programmes. This study estimated the probability of identifying calcein‐marked, hatchery‐reared Colorado pikeminnow Ptychocheilus lucius Girard from external and internal structures. Both control and marked fish held in the laboratory were correctly identified 80% of the time after 300 days. A fluorometer was more accurate 180 days post‐marking, whereas visual observation was more discriminating at 300 days. There were no differences in detection rates among structures in laboratory fish, and for most structures of fish held outdoors, detection rates were <20%. Overall, a strong negative effect of light on mark persistence was observed. Also, an initial positive effect of fish size on mark fluorescence and a negative effect of fish growth were detected. These results suggest the potential use of calcein as a batch‐marking tool would be aided by future studies that better quantify light exposure and calcein mark persistence in both field and experimental settings.  相似文献
