Nineteen weanling horses (average age = 147 d) were divided into exercised (EX; n = 10) and nonexercised (NEX; n = 9) groups, with age, sex and breed represented as equally as possible. The EX group was exercised on an automatic walker at a medium trot for up to 20 min, 5 d each week. Both groups were fed to meet 100% of their protein and 110% of their energy requirements (NRC, 1978). The EX group's diet was supplemented, on exercise days, with corn starch to meet the additional energy requirements for exercise. The experiment was conducted over a 111-d period. Body weight was measured at 10-d intervals, and height at the withers and metacarpal circumference was measured at 20-d intervals. Radiographs of the distal radius, metacarpal joint and the proximal and distal ends of the third metacarpal were taken at 147, 218 and 255 d of age to determine bone density and to observe any possible bone abnormalities. There were no differences between groups in weight or wither height gain; however, gain in third metacarpal circumference was greater (P less than .01) in the EX group than in the NEX group from 167 to 215 d of age. Bone density in the EX group increased by a greater amount (P less than .06) than in the NEX group by the end of the trial. There were no lameness problems or bone abnormalities observed in either group. Exercise training of horses during the weanling to yearling age period was shown to improve the stress-bearing characteristics (radiographic bone density and metacarpal circumference) of the third metacarpal without affecting the quantity of body growth.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To report the prevalence of third metacarpal bone fractures after dorsal plating for pancarpal arthrodeses in dogs and to identify predisposing factors. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective clinical study. ANIMALS: Fifty-four client-owned dogs. METHODS: Pancarpal arthrodesis was performed using dorsally applied 2.7- or 3.5-mm bone plates. Medical records and radiographs were retrospectively evaluated to identify those dogs with metacarpal bone fractures after pancarpal arthrodesis and to determine the angle of arthrodesis, the percentage of the third metacarpal bone covered by the bone plate, and the percentage width of the bone occupied by the screw. Radiological evidence of arthrodesis at follow-up examination 6 weeks postoperatively was recorded. Long-term results were obtained by telephone follow-up with the owners. All lame dogs were evaluated clinically and radiographically. RESULTS: Metacarpal fractures occurred in 6 of 54 dogs. One of these dogs had a stress fracture of the third metacarpal 10 months after implant removal and was not included in the statistical analysis. Fractures occurred through the distal screw hole in four dogs and involved two metacarpal bones (III and IV) in two dogs. The median ratio of bone screw diameter-to-metacarpal bone diameter was the same for dogs with metacarpal bone fractures and those with no fractures (44%), and the median angles of arthrodesis were 8 degrees and 7 degrees. These values were not statistically significant. The percentage length of the metacarpal bone covered by the plate was 53% (no fracture) compared with 46% (fracture), and this difference was statistically significant (P = .035). CONCLUSIONS: Screw diameter was not implicated as a predisposing factor for metacarpal bone fracture in dogs undergoing pancarpal arthrodesis using a dorsally applied dynamic compression plate. The length of the metacarpal bone covered by the bone plate did affect the frequency of metacarpal fracture, with fewer fractures occurring when greater than 53% of the bone length was covered by the dynamic compression plate. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: When performing pancarpal arthrodesis with a dorsally applied bone plate, it is recommended that at least 50% of the length of the third metacarpal bone should be covered by the plate.  相似文献

Thirty foals of mixed breeding, from two consecutive years, were used in two 120-d experiments to evaluate the effects of supplemental feeding (creep feed) on growth in nursing foals. At 10 d postpartum, foals were randomly assigned either to a creep-fed group (CF) or an unsupplemented group (NCF). Initial measurements of body weight (BW), height at the withers (WH), third metatarsal length (MtIII) and third metacarpal length (McIII) were made at 10 d of age and at 30-d intervals thereafter. Medial and lateral cortical peak values for radiographic bone density, cortical width and cortical area at the midpoint of the third metacarpal were used to assess bone quality. Creep feed containing National Research Council (NRC, 1978) recommended levels for all nutrients was offered at 1.5% of BW per day. When compared with unsupplemented foals, supplemented foals had greater gains in BW (P less than .05), in WH (P less than .10) and in MtIII (P less than .05). Mean gains during the trial in BW, WH, MtIII and McIII for the CF foals were 133.3 kg, 22.8 cm, 2.1 cm and 1.9 cm and for the NCF foals were 117.6 kg, 21.2 cm, 1.5 cm and 1.9 cm, respectively. The mean value for the lateral cortical peak was slightly lower (P less than .10) for the CF foals. No differences (P greater than .10) were observed for the medial cortical peak, cortical width or cortical area of the third metacarpal. The results of this study indicate that a creep feeding program that supplies NRC-recommended nutrient levels can increase the rate of skeletal growth with little decrease in quality of bone.  相似文献

Administration of growth promotants with estrogenic activity via hastening closure of the growth plate could have an economic impact on lambs because closure results in ovine carcasses being classified as yearlings. Twelve wether lambs approximately 12 mo old were given silastic implants filled with estradiol-17 beta and allotted randomly to be slaughtered 30, 60, 90, or 220 d after implantation to determine time of growth plate closure in relation to date of implanting. Seven comparable wethers not implanted served as controls. Four wethers implanted at 2 mo of age and slaughtered 220 d later also were included. Implanted wethers had serum concentrations of estradiol averaging 13.9 pg/ml over the 220-d implant period; controls averaged 2.7 pg/ml. Estradiol implants increased carcass maturity scores but fat deposition was not altered. Growth plate widths decreased (P less than .05) as wethers grew older and implants were in place for longer periods of time. Metacarpal growth plates in 12-mo-old lambs were completely ossified 220 d after implanting, but control wethers and wethers implanted at 2 mo maintained growth plate widths. Neither metacarpal nor metatarsal bone lengths differed (P less than .05) between control and implanted wethers. Growth plate ossification was not complete until 570 d of age in implanted lambs, even though bone length had stopped increasing by 408 d. Therefore, even though estradiol and other growth stimulants with estrogenic activity increase rate of ossification of the metacarpal growth plate, bone length or mature size is not limited.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Measurements were taken in the metacarpal and metatarsal bones in 42 calves and 10 dairy cows post-mortem to determine whether there are anatomical differences in bone length. Manual and digital measurements of various bone length parameters were taken. There was a significant difference in the mean length of the condyles of the metacarpal and the metatarsal bones in calves and cows, the lateral condyle being longer than the medial. In all but one metatarsal bone (98.8%), the lateral condyle was longer than the medial. In the metacarpal bones, the lateral condyle was longer in only 52.4% of the bones, in 21.2%, they had the same length and in 27.4% the medial condyle was longer. These intrinsic anatomical differences can help distinguish between the left and right metacarpal and metatarsal bones, for instance, in anatomical and archaeological studies. Knowledge of these differences might be useful for studies on digit function and on the possible predisposition of cattle to claw diseases in the lateral claws of the hind limbs.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate in vitro holding power and associated microstructural and thermal damage from placement of positive-profile transfixation pins in the diaphysis and metaphysis of the equine third metacarpal bone. SAMPLE POPULATION: Third metacarpal bones from 30 pairs of adult equine cadavers. PROCEDURE: Centrally threaded positive-profile transfixation pins were placed in the diaphysis of 1 metacarpal bone and the metaphysis of the opposite metacarpal bone of 15 pairs of bones. Tensile force at failure for axial extraction was measured with a materials testing system. An additional 15 pairs of metacarpal bones were tested similarly following cyclic loading. Microstructural damage was evaluated via scanning electron microscopy in another 6 pairs of metacarpal bones, 2 pairs in each of the following 3 groups: metacarpal bones with tapped holes and without transfixation pin placement, metacarpal bones following transfixation pin placement, and metacarpal bones following transfixation pin placement and cyclic loading. Temperature of the hardware was measured with a surface thermocouple in 12 additional metacarpal bones warmed to 38 C. RESULTS: The diaphysis provided significantly greater resistance to axial extraction than the metaphysis. There were no significant temperature differences between diaphyseal and metaphyseal placement. Microstructural damage was limited to occasional microfractures seen only in cortical bone of diaphyseal and metaphyseal locations. Microfractures originated during drilling and tapping but did not worsen following transfixation pin placement or cyclic loading. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Centrally threaded, positive-profile transfixation pins have greater resistance to axial extraction in the diaphysis than in the metaphysis of equine third metacarpal bone in vitro. This information may be used to create more stable external skeletal fixation in horses with fractures.  相似文献

This study recorded the response to training of the diaphysis of the proximal phalangeal bone and the third metacarpal bone (Mc3) and the Mc3 proximal metaphysis. Nineteen 2- and 3-year old horses in training were exposed either to spontaneous exercise at pasture (PASTEX group) or additional imposed exercise (CONDEX group) from a very young age. Quantitative computed tomography scans were analysed for bone mineral content, size, bone mineral density, periosteal and endosteal circumference, cortical thickness and an estimate of bone strength. The bones of the CONDEX horses were bigger and stronger than those of the PASTEX horses at the start of the observation period, and these differences were maintained after adjusting for training workload. Increase in the bone strength index was through size and not density increase. Density increased during training and decreased during paddock rest between the two training campaigns, during which time bone strength continued to increase because of the slow growth that was still occurring. The greatest variance in the response to the training exercise of diaphyseal bone mineral content, bone strength index or cortical thickness was associated with the cumulative workload index at the gallop, although statistically significant unexplained variances remained. There were no differences in bone response to training, with the exception of the endosteal circumference at 55% of the Mc3 length from the carpometacarpal joint space between CONDEX and PASTEX, which indicated that young horses may be able to be exercised slightly more vigorously than currently accepted.  相似文献

The objective was to study control of mature size by characterizing metacarpal growth plate closure in relation to relevant bone growth-regulating hormones in two breeds exhibiting distinct differences in mature frame size. Thirty-four Suffolk and 34 Dorset ram lambs were slaughtered in pairs within breed at birth, weaning and monthly intervals until 420 d and then bimonthly to 600 d. Plasma growth hormone was depressed to undetectable levels due to the high-energy, ad libitum-fed diet. Plasma insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) rose over the growth period from 116 ng/ml (newborn Suffolk) to a high of 451 ng/ml (420-d Dorset); it appeared to peak at approximately 400 d and then declined to a stable level. Dorsets consistently exhibited higher IGF-I levels. The thyroid hormones exhibited no apparent age association. An age-associated rise was detected for testosterone, but not for estradiol. Mature metacarpal lengths were estimated to be 147.2 and 127.4 mm for Suffolks and Dorsets, respectively. Ninety-five percent of mature length was attained in Suffolks by 226 d and in Dorsets by 165 d. Growth plates, however, did not begin to appear closed until 390 d and closure was not complete in all animals until 480 d, suggesting that metacarpal growth rate was dissociated temporally from growth plate closure. Although growth plate closure likely is controlled by the endocrine system, there were no apparent relationships between circulating hormones and growth plate width, age at closure or zonal divisions within the growth plate, suggesting that the growth plate experiences a very different hormonal environment than what can be measured in the circulating blood.  相似文献

Metacarpals from 59 Angus/Gelbvieh rotationally crossed cows were studied to determine whether bone loss occurs in beef cows between 33 and 153 mo of age. Bone loss or a change in bone composition could affect lean meat yield and proportions of carcass components such as ash. With the exception of 18 single-calf cows that were fed a high concentrate diet after their calves were weaned at 120 d of age, all cows with suckling calves grazed the same pastures. Calves from pasture-fed cows were weaned 46 d before the cows were slaughtered on October 23. Although carcasses from 153-mo-old, pasture-fed cows were heavier (P<0.01) than those from 33-mo-old, pasture-fed cows, no differences (P>0.05) in metacarpal weight, length, cortex shaft area, moisture in cortex, or ash in cortex were observed. Weight and length of metacarpals from 33-mo-old pasture-fed cows with 226.8-kg carcasses were similar (P>0.05) to those from 33-mo-old concentrate-fed cows with 409.3-kg carcasses. Metacarpals from the concentrate-fed, single-calf cows were then compared with those from 129-mo-old cows. Again, no differences (P>0.05) in weight or length of the bones were present. Low correlation coefficients obtained by pooling data for all 59 cows confirmed that no differences (P>0.05) in weight or length of bones existed among animals varying greatly in weight or age. Because complete calcification of the epiphyseal growth plates on the metacarpals occurs prior to 33 mo of age, no change in length was expected. However, our findings that no change in metacarpal weight or bone cortex composition occurred with large changes in age or weight are of interest. Within Angus/Gelbvieh crossed cows, the lean:bone ratio is based entirely on changes in muscle mass because bone mass remains constant. In addition to muscle mass, changes in fat content influence bone percentage in the carcass.  相似文献

Normal fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR3) acts as a negative bone growth regulator by restricting chondrocyte proliferation and endochondral bone elongation. In sheep, a heritable mutation that inactivates FGFR3 produces skeletal overgrowth when homozygous, this condition is commonly referred to as spider lamb syndrome (SLS). We hypothesized that sheep heterozygous for the inactivated FGFR3 mutation (FGFR3(SLS/+)) would exhibit enhanced long bone growth and greater frame size; additionally, the isolated effects of increased bone growth would translate into greater BW and larger LM area relative to normal lambs at harvest. The current study investigated bone length and LM area of FGFR3(SLS/+) sheep at maturity and during growth. At maturity, FGFR3(SLS/+) ewes exhibited a larger frame size and longer bones than normal FGFR3(+/+) ewes (P < 0.05). Similarly, FGFR3(SLS/+) lambs had greater frame sizes than normal FGFR3(+/+) lambs, as indicated by increased metacarpal III length and height at withers (P < 0.05). The FGFR3(SLS/+) lambs took longer than the normal FGFR3(+/+) lambs to reach the 60-kg common BW harvest end point (P < 0.05). The FGFR3(SLS/+) lambs showed no difference in BW, ADG, or LM area at any age compared with normal FGFR3(+/+) lambs (P > 0.2). A similar LM area produced in the context of a greater frame size and skeletal length produces a greater muscle volume, thereby potentially increasing meat yield. The results of this study suggest that FGFR3(SLS/+) animals exhibit a relaxation of the normal inhibition of chondrocyte proliferation, resulting in an increase in the overall frame size. The sheep industry could utilize the naturally occurring genetic mutation in FGFR3 to potentially increase meat yields with enhanced skeletal growth as an alternative to exogenous growth promotants.  相似文献

We studied the influence of vitamin E on intramuscular collagen characteristics and on metacarpal growth plate evolution in suckling lambs. Twenty-four 5-d-old Ile de France suckling male lambs were divided into four equal weight groups, and weekly i.m. injections of DL-alpha-tocopheryl acetate (Control group, 0 IU; Group 1, 625 IU; Group 2, 1,000 IU; and Group 3, 1,500 IU) were given until the lambs were 33 d old. Blood samples were withdrawn for plasma alpha-tocopherol, cholesterol, and triglyceride analyses when the lambs were slaughtered at 40 d of age. Hot carcass weight, metacarpal and metatarsal bone characteristics, and metacarpal growth plate width were measured. After 24 h at 2 to 4 degrees C, semitendinosus muscles were removed for intramuscular collagen analyses. Weight was not influenced by treatment, but lambs in Group 1 had a higher (P < .01) intramuscular collagen content than the other groups. A positive quadratic correlation was found between total collagen and vitamin E doses (r = .511; P < .05). Amount and percentage of soluble collagen increased in muscles of all three vitamin E-treated groups compared with the control group. However, hydroxylysyl pyridinoline concentration decreased with vitamin E injection, but the difference compared to control lambs was only significant for the group injected with 1,000 IU. Amount of soluble collagen was strongly correlated to total collagen concentration (r = .879; P < .0001). It was also related to the alpha-tocopherol/(cholesterol + triglycerides) ratio in plasma (r = .431; P < .04). However, the correlation between soluble collagen percentage and alpha-tocopherol concentration in plasma was not significant (r = .369; P < .08). Bone length, weight, and diameter did not change, but the thickness of metacarpal growth plate increased as the DL-alpha-tocopheryl acetate dose increased; in Groups 2 and 3, the growth plate was significantly wider than in Group 1 and the controls. Growth plate width correlated with alpha-tocopherol/(cholesterol + triglycerides) ratio in plasma (r = .481; P < .02).  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the usefulness of multisite quantitative ultrasonography for noninvasive assessment of bone in horses. SAMPLE POPULATION: 12 healthy horses and both forelimbs from 8 clinically normal horses. PROCEDURE: For in vivo measurements, various regions of interest (ROI) were examined on the third metacarpal bone, radius, and tibia. Precision error for speed of sound (SOS) measurements was obtained by measuring each ROI of 4 horses 10 times with probe repositioning. Additionally, 3 operators measured each aspect of the third metacarpal bone of 6 horses 5 times each. For ex vivo measurements, third metacarpal bones were examined at 9 ROI, and SOS measurements were performed before and after soft tissue removal. One ROI of a single forelimb was subjected to 96 ex vivo measurements with 3 different contact media. RESULTS: The lateral aspect of the third metacarpal bone had significantly higher SOS values than the dorsal and medial aspect of the third metacarpal bone. No difference was obtained between SOS values of the lateral and medial aspect of the radius. The tibia had significantly higher SOS values than the lateral aspect of the radius and the dorsal and medial aspect of the third metacarpal bone. Intraoperator coefficients of variation ranged from 0.62 to 3.15%, and interoperator coefficients of variation ranged from 0.78 to 2.70%. Values of SOS were highest when silicone oil was used as the contact medium. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Speed of sound measurements obtained by quantitative ultrasonography in axial transmission mode can be used to precisely measure superficial cortical bone properties of third metacarpal bone, radius, and tibia in horses.  相似文献

To develop a model of bovine thymus and lymph node growth in vivo, we have implanted bovine foetal tissues (16-23 weeks gestation) under the renal capsule of severe combined immune deficient (SCID)/beige (BG) mice and assayed for graft growth and characteristics 2-18 weeks after engraftment. Bovine foetal thymus and lymph node grew considerably following engraftment of SCID/BG mice. Growth was optimal if bovine foetal tissues were used before gestation Week 17. Bovine-mouse chimerism was confirmed using glucose phosphate isomerase analysis. Bovine thymus grew during the entire 18 weeks of study. Growth of bovine lymph node was initially rapid, reaching a maximum at 2 weeks after transplantation followed by a progressive decrease in size. Transplanted bovine lymph node and thymus were morphologically similar to age-matched bovine foetal tissue for a limited time period. Fibrosis, degeneration and depletion of lymphocytes were evident 6 weeks after engraftment; changes were more severe in lymph node than in thymus whereas increases in lymphocytes, lymphopoiesis and follicle formation were evident in age-matched bovine foetal tissue. Despite growth and morphological similarities of the transplanted tissue, blood counts suggested there was no peripheralization of bovine leucocytes. Bovine immunoglobulins (IgG1 and IgG2) were detected in serum of some SCID/BG chimeric mice for a limited time. The appearance of bovine immunoglobulins at 2 weeks in SCID/BG chimeric mice depended on the age of the foetal donor (> 18 weeks) and coincided with the appearance of morphologically mature lymphocytes in the donor foetus lymph nodes. The ability to produce bovine immunoglobulins decreased 8 weeks after engraftment, coinciding with the depletion of lymphocytes in the engrafted lymph node. Lymphocyte depletion and loss of function of engrafted tissues appear the result of a lack of lymphoid progenitors normally derived from hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow.  相似文献

The densitometric and mechanical structural properties of the left and right fifth metacarpal bones of 10 racing greyhounds with a fracture of the central tarsal bone and 10 without a fracture were investigated by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry and a servo-hydraulic materials testing machine. In all the greyhounds the bone mineral density of the left fifth metacarpal bone was significantly greater than that of the right (P<0.001), but there was no significant difference between the degree of asymmetry in bone mineral density in the two groups. The ultimate torque and energy-to-failure of the left fifth metacarpal bone of the greyhounds with a fracture of the right central tarsal bone were significantly higher than in the right fifth metacarpal bone and higher than in both the left and right fifth metacarpal bones of the greyhounds with no fracture (P<0.05). The ultimate torque and energy-to-failure were significantly related to bone mineral density (P<0.005), and 22 per cent of the variation in these structural properties could be explained by variations in bone mineral density. Fifth metacarpal remodelling in response to asymmetric cyclic loading is bone-specific, and structural properties are enhanced in the left fifth metacarpal of greyhounds with a fracture of the right central tarsal bone.  相似文献

A 2‐day‐old Warmblood filly was presented for examination of an angular limb deformity of the left front limb and an upright conformation of both metacarpophalangeal joints. Radiological examination revealed bilateral absence of the metacarpophalangeal joint space with fusion of the third metacarpal bone and first phalanx (synostosis). No treatment was undertaken. The filly was readmitted to the clinic 10 weeks later for bilateral front limb lameness. On radiological examination, the synostosis of the front metacarpophalangeal joints was still present. Physitis of the distal growth plate of the right third metacarpal bone and proximal growth plate of the right proximal phalanx, and an avulsion fracture of the palmaromedial and proximal aspect of the left middle phalanx, with a cystic like lesion on the medial aspect of distal first phalanx and proximal middle phalanx were diagnosed. Given the poor prognosis, the foal was subjected to euthanasia. Post mortem examination confirmed the absence of the metacarpophalangeal joint space with a trabecular bony union between the third metacarpal bone and the first phalanx. A rudimentary joint capsule was present at the level of the absent joints as well as a small zone of articular cartilage, which invaginated over a short distance into the dorsal trabecular bone on the right front limb. On the medial aspect of the left proximal interphalangeal joint, a focal defect of articular cartilage with exposure of subchondral bone was observed. This is the first case report of a foal born with congenital aplasia of both metacarpophalangeal joints. Congenital malformations should be considered as differential diagnosis in lame foals or foals born with angular or flexural limb deformities.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To compare transfixation and standard full-limb casts for prevention of in vitro displacement of a mid-diaphyseal third metacarpal osteotomy site in horses. SAMPLE POPULATION: 6 forelimbs from 6 horses euthanatized for reasons not related to the musculoskeletal system. PROCEDURE: A 30 degrees osteotomy was performed in the mid-diaphysis of the third metacarpal bone. Two 4.5-mm cortical bone screws were placed across the osteotomy site to maintain alignment during casting. Two 6.35-mm Steinmann pins were placed from a lateral-to-medial direction in the distal aspect of the radius. A full-limb cast that incorporated the pins was applied. An extensometer was positioned in the osteotomy site through a window placed in the dorsal aspect of the cast, and after removal of the screws, displacement was recorded while the limb was axially loaded to 5,340 N (1,200 lb). Pins were removed, and the standard full-limb cast was tested in a similar fashion. RESULTS: The transfixation cast significantly reduced displacement across the osteotomy site at 445 N (100 lb), 1,112 N (250 lb), 2,224 N (500 lb), and 4,448 N (1,000 lb), compared with the standard cast. CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: A full-limb transfixation cast provides significantly greater resistance than a standard full-limb cast against axial collapse of a mid-diaphyseal third metacarpal osteotomy site when the bone is placed under axial compression. Placement of full-limb transfixation casts should be considered for the management of unstable fractures of the third metacarpal bone in horses.  相似文献

This study documented the normal histologic features of the equine metacarpal and metatarsal periosteum and characterized its osteogenic response to surgical manipulation. Two periosteal flaps were elevated from the dorsomedial matacarpal and metatarsal diaphysis in each of three limbs of four yearling and four adult lightbreed horses. The superficial metacarpal cortex under the flap was resected with a bone chisel in one-half of the horses and was undisturbed in the remainder. One periosteal flap in each limb was excised and the other flap was replaced and secured by sutures. All limbs in the horses were radiographed at regular intervals postoperatively. Horses were killed either 30 or 120 days after surgery. Periosteal bone production occurred only at treatment sites of young horses treated by periosteal flap replacement and was limited to approximately 50% of these sites, as determined by radiography and microradiography. Cortical abrasion resulted in an increased incidence of bone production in the periosteum adjacent to the flap perimeter. The histologic features of the periosteum were similar to those reported in other species; young horses had active osteogenesis referable to appositional growth and adults had an inactive periosteum. Histologically, osteogenesis induced by surgery resembled accentuated appositional growth in both yearlings and adults. In the horse, the cambial (osteogenic) layer is included in sharply elevated periosteal flaps. It should be removed in surgical procedures where bone production is to be avoided, and preserved where osteogenesis is desired.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine clinical findings in and outcome of horses with fractures of the second or fourth metacarpal or metatarsal bone that underwent segmental ostectomy, leaving the proximal and distal portions of the bone undisturbed. DESIGN: Retrospective case series. ANIMALS: 17 horses. PROCEDURES: Medical records were reviewed, and information on signalment, affected bone, lesion type, surgical procedure, amount of bone removed, and surgical and postsurgical complications was obtained. Follow-up information was obtained through telephone conversations with owners, trainers, and referring veterinarians. RESULTS: One horse had a fracture involving the distal third of the second metacarpal bone; 13 had fractures involving the middle third of the second metacarpal bone (n = 4), fourth metacarpal bone (5), or fourth metatarsal bone (4); and 3 had fractures involving the proximal third of the second (2) or fourth (1) metacarpal bone. Affected portions of the bones were surgically resected, leaving the proximal and distal portions undisturbed. All horses returned to previous performance levels without evidence of lameness. Cosmetic results were good to excellent. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggest that horses with a complicated injury of the proximal, middle, or distal portion of the second or fourth metacarpal or metatarsal bone may be successfully treated by means of segmental ostectomy of the abnormal portion of the bone.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine microradiographic appearance, bone histomorphometry, and mineral density of the long bones of the metacarpophalangeal joint in horses after immobilization followed by remobilization. ANIMALS: 5 healthy horses. PROCEDURE: One forelimb of each horse was immobilized in a fiberglass cast for 7 weeks, followed by 8 weeks of increasing exercise. Calcein and oxytetracycline were administered IV during the immobilization and exercise phases, respectively, for bone labeling and analysis after euthanasia. Sagittal sections of metacarpal bones and proximal phalanges were examined via radiography, dual energy x-ray absorptiometry, histomorphometry, and bone label analysis. RESULTS: Radiography revealed loss of bone mineral opacity in the subarticular regions of the immobilized metacarpal bones and phalanges and subchondral lesions in metacarpal bones in 2 horses. In phalanges, a significant decrease in subarticular volumetric bone mineral density was detected. There was significantly less bone volume and calcein-labeled bone surface and more vascular volume and oxytetracycline-labeled bone surface in immobilized phalanges, compared with contralateral phalanges. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Eight weeks of exercise after single-limb immobilization is insufficient for recovery of volumetric bone mineral density. During immobilization and remobilization, the subchondral and trabecular bone appear to be actively remodeling.  相似文献
