During 3 consecutive calving seasons, calving performance, placental characteristics and endocrine profiles of total 98 pregnancies of late pregnant Swedish Red and White (SRB) and Swedish Holstein (SLB) dairy heifers and cows, were investigated. Ninety-four singleton pregnancies and 4 sets of twins were recorded. In animals with singleton pregnancy, 8 stillbirths, 7 weak calves, 3 premature parturitions and 1 abortion were registered. In the SLB heifers, 19% of stillbirth (5/26) were observed, while 5% (2/42) were noted for the SRB heifers. One stillborn calf derived from the SRB cows and none was found from the SLB cows. In the heifers and cows delivering a normal living calf with unassisted parturition, the placentome thickness monitored by ultrasonography was constant towards the end of pregnancy. The numbers of foetal cotyledons varied individually between animals but in total, fewer cotyledons were found in the foetal membranes of the SRB animals than in the SLB animals (69 +/- 19) vs. (88 +/- 29) (p < 0.05). No morphological and numerical differences of the placentome thickness in animals delivering a stillborn or weak calf, compared to animals delivering a normal living calf, could be observed. In animals with unassisted parturition and without birth complications, the levels of progesterone (P4), PGF2alpha metabolite (PG-metabolite), cortisol, oestrone sulphate (E1SO4) and pregnancy associated glycoproteins (PAGs) were not different by breeds and parities. In animals carrying stillbirth, higher levels of E1SO4 were found in 3 SRB animals and 1 SLB heifer, whereas lower levels of E1SO4 were recorded in 3 SLB heifers during the last week of pregnancy, compared to the profiles found in animals with unassisted parturition. Additionally, the levels of PAGs remained low and constant in 1 SRB cow (delivering a stillborn calf), 1 SRB heifer (giving birth prematurely), 4 animals (carrying twins) and 1 aborting SRB cow. Our results show a very high rate of stillbirth in especially SLB heifers and deviating profiles of E1SO4 and PAGs in animals with impaired parturition were recorded.  相似文献

Blood samples were taken thrice a week for 2 weeks from 33 pregnant cows in 9 groups, 1 month apart. In addition, blood samples were collected twice daily 1 week from 8 cows before parturition. Plasma progesterone and total oestrogens were quantified by validated radioimmunoassays and total corticosteroids by a competitive protein binding technique. During the 1st 3 month of pregnancy, no remarkable changes were observed from the 3 hormones studied. From the 4th month on, concentrations of progesterone and total corticosteroids decreased significantly (P less than 0.05) and remained fairly constant until the 9th month. Values of total oestrogens increased significantly (P less than 0.05) from the 4th to 6th months and stayed unchanged afterwards. Progesterone levels in periparturient cows decreased linearly (P less than 0.01) during 3 days preceding delivery. Concentrations of total oestrogens rose sharply from day -5 and peaked at calving. Values of total corticosteroids increased dramatically on the 6th day and 24 hours before parturition. The results obtained suggest that in contrast to studies cited earlier plasma corticosteroids could play a key role for triggering parturition in cows.  相似文献

The study was carried out in 5 farms on 174 pregnant heifers. Clinical examination of the udder and bacteriological tests of quarter secretion were performed between the 8th and 3rd week before parturition, and then the animals were divided into a control group (64 heifers) and 3 experimental groups and immediately treated. A group of 32 experimental heifers was injected once with antioxidants (Vitamin A--600,000 i.u.; Vitamin D3--200,000 i.u.; Vitamin E--1.5 mg/kg b.w., Selenium--0.022 mg/kg b.w., i.m.). The next group (26 heads) was intramammary infused with antibiotic DC product (cloxacillin). Heifers from last experimental group (52) were injected with lysosyme dimer in a single dose of 0.02 mg/kg b.w. Clinical and bacteriological examinations were made during the first week after calving. The presence of bacteria was found in secretion of 22.6-38.9% udder quarters in 56.2-71.2% of pregnant heifers. The number of infected quarters (cows) did not change distinctly in the first week after calving except the lysozyme dimer group, where a decrease by 30% was noted. The percentage of quarters with elevated somatic cell count was higher in antibiotic DC group and closely similar in the other groups. None of examined methods showed an acceptable prophylactic effect. Clinical mastitis cases during first week after parturition were mostly caused by Escherichia coli, Staph. chromogenes, Staph. simulans, Staph. aureus, Staph. hyicus, Str. uberis, Str. acidominimus and Enterococcus faecalis.  相似文献

To obtain a basal concentration of serum Haptoglobin (Hp) in cattle in Taiwan, Hp concentrations were measured from serum samples collected from 10 healthy heifers, every week for one year. The values were also compared with those collected from 15 cows diagnosed with postpartum metritis. The heifers were successfully impregnated by artificial insemination six months after the tests. Hp concentrations were also measured in the serum collected from 11 other cows within 3 weeks after parturition. The Hp assay developed in this study gave a good correlation (r=0.893)with Western blotting. The Hp concentration of 454 serum samples from the 10 heifers had a mean value of 83.6 +/- 34.1 mg/l, and there was no significant difference among individual heifers. The basal value of Hp in heifers was calculated as less than 73.6 mg/l. No significant difference in Hp concentration was observed among the 10 heifers during cold and warm seasons (19.8 +/- 2.2 degrees C vs 27.3 +/- 1.4 degrees C), or before and after pregnancy. The mean serum Hp concentration from cows suffering from postpartum reproductive disorders was 1133.5 +/- 627.1 mg/l, which was significantly greater than the serum of healthy heifers and postpartum cows (104.6 +/- 61.0 mg/l) (P<0.05). These results demonstrate that Hp concentration may be a useful indicator for cows with postpartum reproductive disorders.  相似文献

The high incidence of stillbirth in Swedish Holstein heifers has increased continuously during the last 15 years to an average of 11% today. The pathological reasons behind the increased incidence of stillbirth are unknown. The present experiment was undertaken to investigate possible causes of stillbirth and to study possible physiological markers for predicting stillbirth. Twenty Swedish Holstein dairy heifers sired by bulls with breeding values for a high risk of stillbirth (n = 12) (experimental group) and a low risk of stillbirth (n = 8) (control group, group B) were selected based on information in the Swedish AI-data base. The experimental group consisted of 2 subgroups of heifers (groups A1 and A2) inseminated with 2 different bulls with 3.5% and 9% higher stillbirth rates than the average, and the control group consisted of heifers pregnant with 5 different bulls with 0%-6% lower stillbirth rates than the average. The bull used for group A1 had also calving difficulties due to large calves as compared to the bull in group A2 showing no calving difficulties. The heifers were supervised from 6-7 months of pregnancy up to birth, and the pregnancies and parturitions were compared between groups regarding hormonal levels, haematology, placental characteristics and calf viability. In group A1, 1 stillborn, 1 weak and 4 normal calves were recorded. In group A2, 2 stillborn and 4 normal calves were registered. All animals in the control group gave birth to a normal living calf without any assistance. The weak calf showed deviating profiles of body temperature, saturated oxygen and heart rates, compared with the normal living calves. No differences of the placentome thickness, measured in vivo by ultrasonography were seen between the groups. The number of leukocytes and differential cell counts in groups A1 and A2 followed the profiles found in the control group. In group A1, a slight decrease of oestrone sulphate (E1SO4) levels was found in the animal delivering a stillborn calf from the first 24-h blood sampling at 6 weeks to the second at 3 weeks prior to delivery, while the levels of E1SO4 at both periods in the animal delivering a weak calf followed the profile in animals delivering a normal living calf. During late pregnancy and at the time of parturition, the levels of E1SO4 and PAGs in animals delivering a stillborn or weak calf (from group A1) followed the normal profiles found in animals delivering a normal living calf. In group A2, low levels of E1SO4 and pregnancy associated glycoproteins (PAGs) over 24 h at both 3 and 6 weeks prior to parturition (< 1.5 nmol/L) were recorded in animals delivering a stillborn calf. During late pregnancy and parturition, the levels of E1SO4 and PAGs were slightly lower during 30-50 days prior to delivery and increased with a lower magnitude at the time of parturition. In conclusion, our results indicate that the aetiology behind stillbirth varies depending on the AI-bulls used and is associated with dystocia or low viability of the calves. Deviating profiles of oestrone sulphate (E1SO4) and pregnancy associated glycoproteins (PAGs) in animals delivering a stillborn calf not caused by dystocia were observed, suggesting placental dysfunction as a possible factor. The finding suggests that the analyses of E1SO4 and PAGs could be used for monitoring foetal well-being in animals with a high risk of stillbirth at term.  相似文献

Blood samples were taken thrice weekly for 2 weeks from 33 pregnant cows in nine groups, 1 month apart, and twice daily for 8 days commencing 1 week before parturition from eight cows. Plasma progesterone and total oestrogens were quantified by validated radioimmunoassays and total corticosteroids by a competitive protein binding technique. During the first 3 months of pregnancy, no remarkable changes were observed for the three hormones studied. From the fourth month on, concentrations of progesterone and total corticosteroids decreased significantly (P less than 0.05) and remained fairly constant until the ninth month. Values of total oestrogens increased significantly (P less than 0.05) from the fourth to the sixth month and thereafter remained unchanged. In the periparturient cows, progesterone levels decreased linearly (P less than 0.01) during the 3 days preceding delivery. Concentrations of total oestrogens rose sharply from day -5 and peaked at calving. Values of total corticosteroids increased dramatically on the sixth day and also at 24 hours before parturition. These results suggest that, contrary to earlier studies, plasma corticosteroids could have a primary key role for triggering parturition in cows.  相似文献

Thyroxine (T4) and cholesterol concentrations and their dynamic changes and differences were studied in 20 pregnant heifers 10 days before calving until 56 days after calving. Ten control heifers were fed the feed ration for pregnant heifers according to Czechoslovak Standard CSN 46 7070. The feed ration given to another ten (experimental) heifers was fortified with 300 mg of synthetic beta-carotene per head/day within the period of five months before insemination, during pregnancy and till the 56th day after parturition. As suggested by the regression function of straight line, no obvious differences were recorded in the dynamic changes of T4 before parturition and during the first days after parturition. T4 concentrations had a generally descending tendency in both groups, the lowest values being recorded in the 48th hour in the experimental group and the 24th hour in the control. A marked increase of T4 concentrations with the values significantly higher in the control group than in the experimental group was observed between the 21st and 35th day after calving. A medium increase of cholesterol concentrations was found in the heifers given rations fortified with beta-carotene. No significant differences in cholesterol concentrations were observed between the two groups, except in the 72nd hour and the seventh day. Significant T4: cholesterol correlations were recorded in the experimental animals in the first and second hours, on the 42nd day (P less than 0.05), and in the 72nd hour (P less than 0.001); in the control group these observations were made the seventh day before calving and in the sixth hour and on the 14th, 21st and 56th days (P less than 0.05) after calving. It is inferred from the results that beta-carotene interferes with the activity of the thyroid gland and the production of its hormones, and that the increases or decreases of the activity of this gland, caused by beta-carotene, influence the metabolism of cholesterol in the body.  相似文献

Circulating concentrations of leptin and IGF-I, leptin gene expression, and serum binding of [126I]ovine leptin in cattle during pubertal development, as well as leptin gene expression and circulating concentrations of leptin during the estrous cycle and different calendar seasons, were investigated. Multivariate regression analysis was utilized to evaluate temporal changes in BW, leptin mRNA, and serum concentrations of IGF-I and leptin normalized to the week of puberty (Exp. 1). Body weight accounted for most of the variation associated with the onset of puberty in the full regression model (R2 = 0.99; P < 0.01). However, serum leptin was closely related to changes in BW (r = 0.85; P < 0.02) and in the absence of BW was most predictive of pubertal onset (r2 = 0.73; P < 0.01). Mean concentrations of leptin increased (P < 0.0001) linearly from 16 wk before until the wk of pubertal ovulation in yearling heifers reaching sexual maturation from early spring to midsummer. Leptin mRNA transformed to a percent of the value at puberty increased (P < 0.02) as puberty approached, but serum leptin and leptin mRNA values were not well correlated. We found no evidence of leptin-binding proteins in serum of developing heifers. Combined mean serum concentrations of IGF-I (ng/mL) during periods III and IV (-9 wk to wk of puberty; 216.6 +/- 9) were 21% higher (P < 0.0001) than combined mean concentrations of IGF-I during periods I and II (-19 to wk of puberty; 193 +/- 10). In mature heifers and cows (Exp. 2), serum leptin tended to decrease (P = 0.10) during the late luteal/early follicular phase of the estrous cycle, which corresponded to a reduction (P < 0.03) in adipocyte leptin gene expression. In mature ovariectomized cows, serum concentrations of leptin increased (P < 0.001) by 34% from early winter to the summer solstice and remained unchanged throughout the remainder of the year (Exp. 3). Results from these studies indicate that marked increases in both circulating leptin and leptin gene expression occur in developing heifers during pubertal development and are associated with increases in serum IGF-I and BW. Seasonal effects on circulating leptin observed in mature cows from winter to summer could also plausibly account for a portion of the prepubertal rise in serum leptin observed in heifers.  相似文献

To study vitamin A transport in dairy cows and heifers around parturition, an enzyme immunoassay for bovine retinol binding protein (RBP) was developed and serum levels determined. Serum and liver concentrations of retinol were assayed by HPLC. Four weeks before expected calving the cows and heifers were divided into two groups each, and half of the animals received a protein supplementation during the dry period.The mean serum RBP concentration 4 weeks before calving was 42 mg l-1 for the cows and 44 mg l-1 for the heifers. The serum retinol concentrations were 0.53 mg l-1 for the cows and 0.42 mg l-1 for the heifers, and the liver retinol concentrations 0.30 mg l-1 and 0.13 mg g-1, respectively. In the groups without protein supplementation there was a significant decrease in serum RBP at sampling 1 week before parturition compared to initial values. The measurement of serum RBP may prove useful in assessment of amino acid availability in dairy cows.  相似文献

Thirteen primiparous and 41 multiparous Holstein-Friesian cattle were used to study the relationship between maternal plasma progesterone (P4) and estrone sulfate (E1S) concentrations and the prevalence of dystocia. The calvings in 4 heifers and 30 cows were normal (eutocia), while the calvings in 9 heifers and 11 cows were difficult (dystocia). Neither the concentrations of P4 nor E1S were different between the groups with eutocia and dystocia from days 90 to 270 of pregnancy. However, a few days prior to parturition, eutocial cows and heifers showed a sharp decline of plasma P4, while dystocial cattle did not show such a remarkable decline of P4 concentration. Plasma P4 levels in dystocial cows a few days antepartum were significantly higher than in eutocial animals (P<0.05 or P<0.01). Prepartum E1S concentrations were significantly lower (P<0.05) in dystocial than eutocial cattle during the prepartum period from days 6 to 1 in heifers and from days 3 to 1 in cows. These results suggest that insufficient production of E1S and delayed regression of the corpora lutea are possible causes of dystocia in cattle.  相似文献

In the present study spontaneous uterine motility was recorded in 4 cows during late pregnancy, parturition and the puerperium using pressure microsensors and electrodes which were surgically implanted into the myometrium of the pregnant horn 3 to 4 weeks before parturition. Hysterograms were evaluated by means of pressure amplitude, frequency, duration, interval of uterine contractions and also by electromyography. During the last 2-3 weeks of pregnancy only single weak uterine contractions of different intensity were seen. About 18-20 hours a.p. frequency and amplitude of mainly tubocervical directed waves continuously increased. When the fetus entered the birth canal and especially during expulsion of the calf extremely strong irregular contractions occurred, which became very regular during the first hours p. p. After the placenta has been released 3-8 hours p. p., spontaneous uterine motility drastically decreased until the second postpartal week, when it started to increase again.  相似文献

Recent studies have shown significant associations between prepartum energy status and postpartum fertility in dairy cows; therefore, the assessment of energy status by blood metabolites and metabolic hormones and suitable improvement of management during the prepartum period may enhance reproductive performance. Rumen fill score (RFS) is associated with feed intake; however, it is unknown whether RFS is also related to blood parameters. Therefore, this study investigated the relationship between RFS and energy status during the prepartum period, and their associations with conception at first artificial insemination (AI) after parturition. In 42 multiparous Holstein cows, RFS assessment and blood sampling were carried out twice a week during 3 weeks of the peripartum period. Ovarian cycles until AI were evaluated by measuring milk progesterone levels. Before calving, positive correlations were observed between RFS and total cholesterol, and RFS did not change in pregnant cows at first AI after parturition, whereas in non‐pregnant cows, RFS decreased gradually as the calving day approached. After calving, non‐pregnant cows showed lower energy status compared with pregnant cows, and some non‐pregnant cows showed anovulation and cessation of estrous cycle. In conclusion, RFS during the close‐up dry period is related to real‐time energy status, and is associated with postpartum energy status and conception at first AI in dairy cows. © 2016 Japanese Society of Animal Science  相似文献

The phagocytic competence, measured as the total number of polymorphonuclear leukocytes per mm3 which phagocytosed Staphylococcus aureus, strain 321, in vitro, was determined in eight cows during complete pregnancies. Such leukocytes are referred to as "Active PMN'S". There was a gradual decline in the number of these cells from conception to a minimum between the 16th and 20th weeks of pregnancy, followed by a steady increase to the cessation of lactation when a marked drop occurred, after which there was an increase to a maximun during the second week prepartum. From this maximum there was a rapid decrease to an absolute minimum during the first week after parturition. From the second week postpartum there was a gradual increase to conception. The correlation coefficient (r) of number of active PMN'S with time before conception was -0.474 )p-0.01). There were significant differences (p=0.01) in numbers of active PMNS Among the eight cows. It was found that the cows fell into two groups, one whose members had, overall, significantly more active PMNs (p=0.001) than those in the second group. The between cow differences may have been due to 1) age, since the cows with the highest numbers of circulating active PMNs were younger than those in the other group of 2) the combined stress of pregnancy and lactation, as those cows which were both pregnant and milking had the lowest numbers of active PMNs.  相似文献

This study's objective was to determine if nutrient restriction during late gestation affected beef heifer feed intake, body weight (BW) gain and endocrine regulation during a 10‐week feeding trial. During the last 100 days of gestation, control (CON) dams were fed to increase body condition score (BCS). Whereas, nutrient‐restricted dams (NR) and NR dams protein supplemented 3 days/week (NRS) were fed to decrease BCS by 1.2. After parturition, all cow‐calf pairs were moved to a common pasture and fed in excess of requirements until weaning. At 15 months of age, heifers were randomly sorted into two pens and adjusted to a commercial total mixed ration over a 2‐week period. Blood samples and BW were taken at the initiation of feeding and on a biweekly basis for the duration of the feeding trial. Feed intake was monitored for 10 weeks using a GrowSafe System. After 10 weeks, an intravenous glucose tolerance test (IVGTT) was performed on 21 randomly subsampled heifers. During the feeding trial, NR heifers consumed more feed than CON and NRS heifers. Heifers from NR dams tended to increase BW compared to NRS and CON heifers when adjusted for initial BW. Heifers from NR and NRS dams had a greater increase in BCS compared to heifers from CON dams. Plasma glucose and insulin concentrations during the feeding trial increased in NR heifers compared to the other groups beginning at 2 and 4 weeks respectively. Plasma leptin concentrations were increased in the NR and NRS heifers compared to the CON heifers beginning at week 4 of feeding. During the IVGTT at the conclusion of the feeding challenge, plasma glucose and insulin were increased in NR heifers compared to other treatment groups. These results show that nutrient restriction during late gestation alters appetite and endocrine regulation in heifer offspring.  相似文献

The infectivity and pathogenicity of a strain of Leptospira hardjo isolated from the eastern plains of Colombia were evaluated. Ten pregnant heifers were artificially inoculated and monitored during 10 months. During the trial, isolation of leptospires was attempted and antibodies were detected by the microscopic agglutination test. Leptospires were recovered from the urine of six of the inoculated animals up to 6 months after infection. Eight of ten calves born from the inoculated heifers were born weak, and one of them died 12 h after parturition. Three of the weak calves had generalized jaundice of the internal surfaces. Half of the cows developed metritis and had a retained placenta. Serological reactions were seen against serotypes other than L. hardjo. A chronic infection was apparently established in the inoculated heifers with leptospiruria resulting in reinfection of the animals and a secondary rise in antibody levels.  相似文献

The dynamics of antibody production against Neospora caninum during the gestation period was examined in chronically infected dairy cows. Data were obtained from 86 pregnant parous dairy cows, 21 of which had suffered abortion. The cows belonged to two herds in which a diagnosis of N. caninum infection had been previously confirmed in aborted foetuses. Pregnancy diagnosis and blood collection were performed on post-insemination Days 40, 90, 120, 150, 180, 210, and at parturition or until the time of abortion detection. Blood plasma was tested for antibodies against N. caninum using ELISA. The non-aborting cows were divided into two groups according to whether their antibody values in the second half of gestation had increased or not, while aborting cows were classified as those showing an antibody peak before abortion or those not showing a pre-abortion peak. Differences in antibody values throughout pregnancy in each group of non-aborting and aborting cows were analysed by GLM repeated measures of analysis of variance. While 32 non-aborting cows (49%) showed a significant and consistent increase in anti-Neospora antibody values during the second half of gestation, antibody values in the remaining 33 non-aborting cows were practically constant throughout gestation. An antibody peak around abortion was observed in 11 aborting cows (52%), while antibody values in the remaining 10 aborting cows were similar before and at abortion. Seroprevalence fluctuations, defined as seronegative blood samples at some point during the gestation period, were, furthermore, observed in 2 aborting and 11 non-aborting cows. Our results indicate two clearly distinguishable types of humoral immune dynamics throughout gestation: an increased or flat production of antibodies during the second half of gestation in non-aborting animals and before abortion in aborting cows. The observation that some Neospora-infected dams can exhibit negative antibody values at any time during gestation, particularly at parturition or abortion, prompts future studies designed to explore the use of new ELISA strategies at the farm level.  相似文献

Perinatal mortality and stillbirths were investigated in an extensively managed herd of Friesian cows and heifers calving over a 2‐year period: 504 cows were calved and 215 heifers. Cows were bred to Friesian and Jersey bulls using natural service. The perinatal fetal mortality rate was 7.5% for cows and 30% for heifers. An experienced stockman managed these calvings and veterinary assistance was required only on nine occasions. All stillborn fetuses were examined post‐mortem by the Veterinary Laboratories Agency, Carmarthen and no infectious agent was identified on any occasion. Thyroid hyperplasia was found in two fetuses. In blood samples taken from 10 late pregnant heifers, mean glutathione peroxidase values were 7.9 ± 1.7 IU/ml Packed Cell Volume (PCV). Tissues from eight fetuses were submitted to the University of Liverpool for histopathological examination; all presented lesions consistent with myocardial degeneration and necrosis of the left ventricle. Following treatment of 205 late pregnant heifers with sodium selenite and vitamin E, the overall perinatal mortality rate in these cattle fell to below 11%.  相似文献

In the present study the immunomodulation effects of the Zindep preparation, based on elementary zinc and zinc oxide, were followed on the humoral response of gravid cows in the 8th and 9th months, a week after parturition and in calves immediately after parturition and on day 15 of their life. An increased level of B-lymphocytes was observed on days 2, 5, 8, 15, 30 and 50 of the experiment. The highest average values were recorded in the experimental group on days 8 and 15 of the experiment. The mentioned values were statistically significant (T-test) at the level 0.05 and 0.01. The average values of B-lymphocytes in cows after parturition reached 22.3% in the cows of the experimental group and 20.5% in the control group. No pronounced differences in the number of B-lymphocytes in the calves of both followed groups were recorded. The statistical evaluation of the values obtained in the cows after parturition as well as in the calves was not carried out due to a small number of samplings.  相似文献

In order to study rapid changes in 15-ketodihydro-PGF2 alpha, cortisol and progesterone in the period preceding parturition in cattle, pre-term parturition was induced in 4 late pregnant heifers. Parturitions were induced by 2 intramuscular injections of 20 mg dexamethasone with a 24-h interval. The first injection was made on days 254, 258, 264 and 265 in gestation, respectively. Twenty-four h before the first injection an intravenous polyurethane cannula was inserted. Blood samples were collected at least every hour until 12 h after parturition and during the second stage of labour at least 6 times per hour. Plasma was analysed for 15-ketodihydro-PGF2 alpha and progesterone by radioimmunoassays, and for cortisol by an ELISA. The average time from injection to parturition was 7.7 (6.6-8.9) days (mean (range)). Two of the heifers had retained foetal membranes (RFM). At the start of the experiment the levels of PGF2 alpha metabolite were low (< 300 pmol/L) and increased slowly to levels between 1000 and 2000 pmol/L at one day before parturition. During the last day, however, the levels increased rapidly and the highest levels (> 10,000 pmol/L) were reached at the time of delivery. No pulsatile release was seen. Immediately after foetal expulsion the PG-metabolite levels decreased rapidly in all animals. In the 2 animals with RFM, however, this decline ceased within a few h. The PG-metabolite levels in these animals then started to increase and reached levels as high as during parturition. Luteolysis occurred between 1.6 and 0.4 days before parturition in all animals. The cortisol profile showed a distinct peak at the time of parturition in the RFM heifers. This peak was absent in the non-RFM heifers. This study shows that the PGF2 alpha release at prepartal luteolysis and parturition is not pulsatile in cattle and that cortisol profiles in heifers with retained foetal membranes might differ from the profiles in non-RFM heifers at the time of parturition.  相似文献

BREEDING PATTERNS IN COMMERCIAL BEEF HERDS   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
A total of 16,111 cows in 18 beef herds in New South Wales were examined for pregnancy between June 1963 and February 1967. The mean pregnancy level was 86%. The pregnancy level for the lactating cows was 87% and for the non-lactating cows (excluding heifers) 85%. The pregnancy level for heifers was 84%. The herd pregnancy level ranged from 80% to 98%. Four herds had a significantly higher pregnancy level in the lactating cows, while three herds had a significantly higher pregnancy level in the non-lactating cows. Positive Br. abortus agglutination titres were recorded from three herds, none of which had been vaccinated with Strain 19. Br. abortus titres were negative in the remaining 15 herds. One of these herds had practised regular weaner vaccination with Strain 19 at 6–10 months of age. In one of the positive herds a typical abortion storm occurred with 33% of the pregnant cows failing to bring a calf to branding. A follow-up blood test of 65 of the WD cows at calf branding showed 74% with titres 1 in 40 or higher. The mean discrepancy between females pregnant at pregnancy diagnosis and calves branded from these females was 17% for heifers and 3.5% from the older cows. Dystocia was established as the main cause of calf loss in the heifer group.  相似文献
