1. The plumage of hens housed singly in cages was generally in good condition after one year. There was slightly more feather loss where hens could peck their neighbours’ plumage (adjacent cages) than where this was not possible (spaced cages).

2. It was concluded that most, though not all, of the feather damage seen in the individually‐caged birds was due to abrasion, but that abrasion was likely to be relatively unimportant in multi‐bird cages.

3. There were no significant differences in egg production or food intake associated with the two kinds of housing.

4. In the adjacent cages there was an increase in maintenance requirement related to increased feather damage, which amounted to about 7% for an increase of about one unit in feather‐loss score. In the spaced cages the increase was less.

1. The diurnal feeding pattern and motor activity of medium‐weight hybrid hens housed in groups of four were observed. Cages of two shapes were compared: conventional deep cages (406 × 457 mm) and shallow cages (610 × 305 mm).

2. Birds in conventional deep cages were more active than those in shallow cages in each of four different periods of day. Activity reached a peak between 11.00 and 13.00 h irrespective of cage shape.

3. Mean feeding activity was greater in the shallow (45.6%) than in the conventional deep cages (39.9%).

4. Mean feeding activity was greater in birds fed ad libitum (43.3%) than in those fed on a restricted diet (40.4%).

5. Although restricted birds in shallow cages showed more feeding activity than those in conventional deep cages they consumed less food (56% against 67%) in the 7 h between supply of their daily ration and the onset of the dark period.

6. Feather damage was greater in the conventional deep cages than in the shallow cages.

7. The more efficient utilisation of food by hens in shallow cages is probably due largely to three factors: reduced levels of motor activity and general disturbance, a more leisurely eating pattern and better feather cover.  相似文献

Specific adaptations of selected lines to their conditions of management were found for egg production, but not for several other traits, when hens of different selection histories were tested under both conditions. Floor selected sublines were superior to cage selected sublines in floor pens but inferior when both were tested in individual cages. The study involved three populations of two sublines in each of which selection for egg production had been practised over seven generations. Under one management birds from the three populations were intermingled in large floor pens; under the other, among individual cages.

The role of social dominance as expressed in competition for food was explored. Floor selected hens were the more dominant in floor pens as well as in paired tests in cages.  相似文献

1. Medium hybrid hens were housed from 20 to 64 weeks in a deep litter house as flocks of 300, 370 and 370 and at stocking densities of 2–4 to 10–7 birds/m2 in three successive laying cycles. Sister birds were housed in cages in an adjacent building as groups of 3 and 4, at 750 or 560 cm2/bird.

2. Hen housed egg production was lower on litter (208 to 235) than in cages (230 to 253). However, the estimated 52‐week values for litter were comparable to or better than standards published by the National Farmers’ Union.

3. Ambient temperatures were well controlled in both houses, but atmospheric dust and ammonia were a problem in the litter system and ammonia was a problem in the deep pit cage house. Litter condition was good at all stocking densities.

4. There was a trend for production to increase with stocking density on litter, but to decrease in cages.

5. Most egg quality variables were similar in the two systems, although there were more dirty eggs from litter and shell thickness was slightly greater in eggs from cages.

6. Body weight increase was initially faster in birds on litter; caged hens were equally heavy by the end of lay, but a greater proportion of their body mass was lipid.

7. The severity of feather damage and loss was correlated with stocking density for hens both on litter and in cages, being worse at the higher densities. Median cage scores were greater than values from litter at low densities but less than those from high densities. Beak trimming reduced feather damage on litter but had no effect in cages.

8. Mortality was low (1 to 3%) for all flocks, except those in year 3 which had not been beak trimmed and which suffered from cannibalism both in cages and on litter.  相似文献

1. Reproductive and other characteristics were measured at 34 and 60 weeks of age in broiler breeder hens on 6 different feeding regimes. The hens came from genetically lean and fat lines selected on the basis of low or high 7‐week plasma very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) concentration.

2. Plasma VLDL concentrations were consistently higher at all ages in fat line hens but were not affected by dietary treatment.

3. Mature body weight did not differ between the lines in birds fed ad libitum but with food restriction throughout life, fat line birds were lighter at 34 weeks.

4. There was little difference between the lines in abdominal fatness of birds fed ad libitum up to 60 weeks. Fat line birds were always fatter than lean line counterparts under food restriction.

5. Egg production was higher in lean line birds fed ad libitum but food restriction improved egg production in both lines. Peak egg productions were similar in both lines but there was evidence that the optimal food allowances for egg production was higher in the lean compared with the fat line.

6. Ovarian yellow follicle numbers were highest at 34 weeks in ad libitum fed lean line birds and declined linearly with decreasing body weight caused by food restriction but there was no such relationship in fat line birds.

7. White follicle numbers were higher and follicular atresia was lower in the lean line.

8. It is concluded that poor reproduction in fat line birds was associated with inhibition of follicular development and atresia rather than by high plasma VLDL concentrations promoting excessive yolk formation.  相似文献

1. In the Netherlands aviary systems are in use on 19 commercial farms. In the present study the results of 19 flocks kept in aviaries, with an average flocksize of 16,000 hens, were analysed and compared with 47 flocks kept in battery cages.

2. The aviary flocks had lower egg weights, lower mortality rates and poorer food conversion. The difference in food intake per hen per day was not significant. The average percentage of floor eggs in aviaries was 4.6, ranging from 0.9 to 11.5.

3. Production costs per kg eggs produced in aviaries were 8.2% greater than in cages. This increase was mainly caused by higher costs for pullets, housing and labour.  相似文献

1. Three experiments were carried out with White Rock (Anak) female chicks to evaluate the possibility of obtaining low‐weight breeder hens and to assess their reproduction potential. Such hens were obtained by early growth depression induced by either severe food restriction (SFR) from 1 or 2 to 3 or 4 weeks of age, or a low‐protein diet (LPD) fed from 0 to 6 weeks of age, or the use of diets containing 0·7 or 0·8% zinc as ZnO from 1 to 3 weeks of age, followed by food allocation below recommendation up to 22 or 67 weeks of age.

2. Body weights (BW) of the birds whose growth had been depressed were consistently and at time significantly lower than those of the control birds throughout the experiments. Age at first egg was delayed in hens previously fed the LPD and the diet containing the higher concentration of ZnO, and in those exposed to SFR from 2 to 4 weeks of age. BW at that time tended to be lower in birds whose growth had been depressed, although a significant effect was observed in only one experiment.

3. Egg production and egg size were not significantly affected by the various treatments, except for the lower production in hens fed the LPD at an early age.

4. Negative regressions (on an individual basis) were consistently observed between BW at 22 weeks of age and age at first egg, and between age at first egg and number of eggs laid. Positive regressions were observed between age at first egg and BW at that time. The regressions between BW at 22 weeks of age and number of eggs laid were positive but not always significant.

5. Severe growth depression at an early age (produced by food restriction or ZnO supplemented diet, but not LPD) followed by decreased allocation of food afterwards, could provide a means for reducing BW of broiler breeder hens without adversely affecting egg production. This procedure may save 2·5 to 6·6% of the food consumed during the life span of the birds.  相似文献

1. Battery cages 460 mm in depth (deep) were compared with 305 mm cages (shallow); the two shapes provided equal areas per bird.

2. More eggs were produced per hen housed from 30 to 70 weeks in the shallow cages; the difference approached significance.

3. The pattern of feeding activity over the day was significantly more U‐shaped in the shallow cages; this pattern accords more closely with physiological requirements.

4. Feather damage caused by pecking was slightly but significantly more severe in the deep cages at 70 weeks.

5. The proportion of cracked eggs (collected from 60 to 70 weeks) was significantly lower in the shallow cages.

6. The arrangement of the hens was such that within the shallow cages a higher proportion of birds was present in the front half.

1. A flock of laying hens was divided into two groups according to their fatness, which was estimated using abdominal fatness callipers.

2. A moult was induced in both groups by reducing day‐length and restricting food intake. The food restriction period lasted for 2, 3 or 4 weeks and the birds were given either 15 or 25 g of whole wheat/bird.

3. No differences were observed between the moulting treatments on post‐moult egg weights, shell strength or Haugh units, but maximum egg output (g/bird d) was obtained by the 4‐week food restriction period for the fat‐grouped birds but by the 3‐week food restriction for the lean‐grouped birds.

4. The birds restricted to 15 g wheat/bird d showed a more rapid regression of the ovary and oviduct, which may account for their increased egg numbers towards the end of the 22‐week laying period compared to the birds allocated 25 g/bird d.  相似文献

1. Thirty‐two Khaki Campbell laying ducks were divided into two equal groups and housed either in floor pens or in cages in an environmentally controlled building. The food for two replicate groups of four birds each in each management system was rationed by weight and two other replicate groups were fed ad libitum. Housing and feeding treatment effects were assessed by measuring efficiency of food conversion into eggs and egg production.

2. Housing ducks in cages did not reduce egg production or efficiency of food conversion compared with the more conventional floor‐pen housing system. Egg production and egg size were adversely affected by the restricted feeding programme.

3. Caging in a controlled environment with unrestricted food appears to be a potentially feasible management system for laying ducks, comparable with such systems for laying fowls.  相似文献

1. The impact of keel bone fractures on egg production, egg weight and feed and water consumption in individual laying hens. A total of 165 Lohmann brown laying hens were obtained from a commercial farm that consisted of 105 with keel fractures and 60 without keel fractures.

2. After a 4-d period of acclimatisation, hens were individually housed and provided with ad libitum food and water for a 24-h period. The number of eggs laid, egg weight, feed and water consumption during this period were recorded. Keel bone strength was also assessed.

3. Hens free from keel fractures laid more eggs (91.7% vs. 84.9%) of significantly heavier weight (61.9 g vs. 60.2 g), ate less feed (139 g vs. 151 g) and drank less water (212 ml vs. 237 ml) than hens with fractures.

4. There was a significant positive association between keel fracture severity and water consumption, and a significant negative association between keel fracture severity and egg weight and keel bone strength.

5. This small-scale study on individual birds shows that keel bone fractures may have an impact on the economics of egg production.  相似文献

1. Laying hens (192 ISA Brown medium hybrids) were housed from 18 to 72 weeks as groups of 4 in conventional or experimental cages. The main area of all cages provided 675 cmVhen. All experimental cages had perches, dust baths and nest boxes, which were of three types: litter (L), artificial turf (A) or plastic rollaway (P). These facilities provided an additional 375 to 480 cm2/hen. The nest boxes and dust baths occupied either high or low positions. Behaviour, physical condition and production of the birds were regularly recorded.

2. Mortality was low (1.6% overall) and egg production very good in all treatments. The proportion of cracked and dirty eggs was slightly (but not significantly) higher in the experimental cages. In the experimental cages 90% of eggs were laid overall in the nest boxes and 3% in the dust baths. The proportion laid in the nest boxes was lower early in the laying cycle and increased with time, reaching 99% in A.

3. The facilities were heavily used. Birds spent about 25% of day time on the perches and 10–15% in or near the nest box and dust bath. At night, the majority of birds (90 to 94%) roosted on perches, but most of the remainder were on the lips of the nest box or dust bath, fouling the interiors.

4. Pre‐laying behaviour was much more settled in the experimental cages (45 min spent in the eventual laying position) than in the conventional ones (20 min) and total duration varied from 68 min in A to 87 min in P. The number of nest entries varied from 3.0 (A and P) to 4.3 (L); disturbance to sitting birds was correspondingly greater in L.

5. Dust bathing in the experimental cages generally took place during the afternoon in a single bout of about 5 min duration, whereas in the conventional cages it was brief and fragmented (3 bouts of 10 s each). The dust bath was also used for foraging behaviour (pecking and scratching). The treatments with small dust baths (A and P) caused problems for the birds.

6. Feather, foot and claw damage all tended to be less in the experimental than in the conventional cages, though only in the last case was the difference significant. Keel bone depressions appeared to be associated with perches; they were present in 43% of hens in the experimental cages but only 4% in conventional cages. There were no significant differences in body weight or in tibial or humerus strength between birds in the various treatments.

7. This study confirms that experimental cages with nest boxes, dust baths and perches offer appreciable benefits for welfare, with few production problems. The most successful treatment (A) could, with relatively minor modifications, form the basis of a practical design for large-scale commercial production.  相似文献

1. ISA Brown and Shaver 288 hens, fed ad libitum, were given a 5‐h increase or a 2, 5 or 10‐h decrease in photoperiod at 215 d of age. Hens of both breeds were also maintained on constant 10, 13 or 18 h photoperiods. Other groups had their photoperiod increased from 8 to 13 h, or were held on constant days but had their access to food limited to 8 h per day.

2. Both breeds on ad libitum feeding exhibited curvilinear rate of lay and egg output, and linear food intake, responses to photoperiod change. Shaver hens reduced their egg output and rate of lay to a greater extent than ISA Brown hens when photoperiod was decreased.

3. In both breeds the beneficial effect on egg production of the 5‐h increase in photoperiod was less than the adverse effect of the 5‐h decrease.

4. The influence of light change per se generally had a greater effect on performance than the influence of feeding opportunity, but significant effects of changing feeding opportunity were demonstrated.

5. The reduction in mean rate of lay and egg output following a reduction in photoperiod was partly caused by some birds ceasing lay, but all birds showed some decrease in both variates  相似文献

1. ISA Brown hens were housed in groups of 4 in cages with different designs of nest boxes provided, to determine the effects of nest box design and management on their use and on the pre‐laying behaviour shown by the birds.

2. There were 5 treatments: control (C); a wire‐floored nest box attached to the back of the cage (W); a nest box containing a fibreglass rollaway hollow (N); two rollaway nest boxes (T); a rollaway nest box, protected by a partition from the main part of the cage (P).

3. The holes in the rollaway nests in treatment N, T and P were shut initially, but the proportion of eggs laid in these nests only reached 50%. This proportion rose to over 80% when wood shavings were added daily, but fell to below 30% when rollaway holes were opened. These rollaway hollows are apparently not suitable for use in laying cages.

4. Use of nest boxes in treatment W varied between 60 and 80%. However, when pre‐laying behaviour was recorded (in 19 hens) two birds which laid in the nest boxes nevertheless showed abnormal behaviour.

5. Individual hens had on average 29 to 60% of their pre‐laying behaviour overlapped by that of others in the cage. Nesting space for at least two birds is probably necessary in a cage for 4 birds. However, in treatment T pre‐laying behaviour was disturbed by hens moving between the two boxes. This would be avoided by provision of one box big enough for two hens.

6. Soiling of hollows resulted in dirty eggs and suggested that nest boxes for laying cages may have to be provided with doors to prevent hens from roosting in them.  相似文献

1. Two hundred and sixty four dwarf broiler breeder hens were subjected to ad libitum or restricted feeding and to four lighting patterns: 15L (bright light):9D (dark), 15L:9d (dim light), 2L:10d: 1L:11d, (0.5L:3.5d) × 6.

2. Breeder hens fed ad libitum and subjected to either conventional or intermittent lighting ingested respectively, 25 g and 14 to 17 g more than hens restricted to 115 g/d.

3. Body weight was greater in hens fed ad libitum irrespective of the lighting pattern and of the amount of food intake.

4. Persistency of egg production was impaired by intermittent lighting.

5. Ad libitum feeding reduced egg fertility. The decrease was larger in breeder hens on intermittent lighting.

6. Hatchability was increased in hens submitted to the symmetrical lighting pattern (0.5L:3.5d).

7. Egg and chick weights were higher in hens fed ad libitum.

8. Shell index and shell breaking strength increased in restricted hens on the intermittent lighting pattern (0.5L:3.5d) × 6.

9. The best performance was obtained in restricted hens on the conventional lighting pattern.  相似文献

1. The objective of the study was to investigate the differences in eggshell quality, bone quality and serum bone biochemistry markers associated with changes in age and dietary soybean oil levels in laying hens.

2. A total of 54, 19-week-old Hy-Line Brown laying hens were housed in 18 battery cages (3 birds/cage) and randomly divided into three diet treatments for 90 d: control-fat (CF, 1.9% soybean oil), moderate-fat (MF, 7% soybean oil) and high-fat (HF, 10% soybean oil).

3. The hens’ body weights (BW), egg production, egg weights, eggshell thickness and femoral diameter were higher at d 90 than at d 60 or d 30. Meanwhile, feed intake, relative bone weights, all bone strength parameters and serum Ca were lower at d 90 or 60 than at d 30.

4. Compared to the CF hens, the feed intake, BW, abdominal fat pad weights and serum alkaline phosphatase activity were elevated in MF or HF hens. The eggshell thickness, relative femoral and tibial weight, femoral stiffness, femoral modulus, tibial mixed force and serum calcium and phosphorus levels were lower in MF or HF hens than CF hens.

5. These findings suggest that bone loss in caged hens starts from an early stage of the laying period, and dietary oil (particularly with diets over 10% soybean oil) has harmful effects on eggshell quality, bone strength and bone mineralisation from an early stage of the laying period.  相似文献

1. Japanese quail hens were housed from 6 to 26 weeks of age in cages providing areas of 150, 180, 210 and 240 cm2/bird.

2. Body weight gain, age at 50% egg production, mortality, hen‐day egg production and food conversion values showed significant improvement with proportionate increase in cage space per layer.

3. Egg weight gradually increased with age but shell thickness was influenced neither by age of the hen nor by stocking density.

4. Yolk index and colour were superior in the lowest stocking density (more cage space) group; other egg quality traits and egg weight were not influenced by stocking density.

1. The effects of housing laying hens 1 or 2 per cage (1 452 or 726 cm2 /bird), and three feeding regimes (ad libitum, 70% ad libitum and 6 days/ week) were investigated.

4. There were significant interactions between feeding regime and stocking rate for egg weight and final body weight.

1.?The advantages and disadvantages of various housing systems for laying hens were compared as a pilot study for work in commercial conditions.

2.?At 16 weeks of age, 284 hens were introduced into one of 6 housing systems: two types of conventional cages (small: SC; large: LC), furnished cages (small: SF; large: LF), and non-cage systems (single-tiered aviary: SA; free-range: FR).

3.?We evaluated the welfare, egg production, and immune response of the birds in these housing systems, built in the same location, for 18 months. For welfare evaluation, we examined their ethology, physiology, anatomy, production, and physical condition.

4.?The non-cage systems, especially FR, had a low score for freedom from pain, injury, and disease, together with other disadvantages, such as pale eggs and increased feed intake for production. However, the score for freedom to express normal behaviour was high and immune response was good in the non-cage systems.

5.?In the furnished cages, behaviour was more diverse in SF than in LF, and in SF immune response was comparable with the non-cage systems.

6.?For freedom from fear and distress, the non-cage systems had high scores for some indicators such as TI duration, H/L ratio and claw length, while aggressive pecking and feather pecking was worse in the housing systems with large group sizes.  相似文献

1. Fearfulness, shell colour, incidence and degree of shell whitening and the interval between ovipositions were studied in two populations of 30 brown egg laying hens with family histories of a low or a high incidence of egg shell whitening.

2. Hens of the population with the high incidence of whitening appeared to be more fearful than hens of the population with the low incidence of whitening.

3. Brown colouration of the egg shell and the incidence and degree of shell whitening declined as the hens aged.

4. Brown colouration and egg shell whitening were most pronounced on the blunt ends of the eggs.

5. A large part of the variation in egg shell whitening was attributable to the individual (hen) component of variance.

6. Differences in egg shell whitening, between the two populations, were detectable throughout the 26 weeks of the experiment.

7. Oviposition intervals were similar for normal and coated eggs when birds were not exposed to disturbance.

8. Disturbance of hens increased oviposition intervals and the incidence and degree of shell whitening, to a similar extent, in both populations.

9. It is concluded that stress‐related egg retention is not the sole factor responsible for abnormal egg shell whitening. Shell whitening may occur as a consequence of the premature termination of shell pigmentation as well as a consequence of the retardation of oviposition which occurs when hens are disturbed.  相似文献
