Persistence of white clover (Trifolium repens) in mixtures was studied in a long-term experiment. Mixtures of two cultivars of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) with contrasting growth habits and three white clover cultivars differing in leaf size were sown in 1991 and evaluated at two cutting frequencies. During 1995 and 1996 mixtures with large-leaved white clover cv. Alice had the highest dry-matter (DM) content, clover and N yield, and the highest white clover content, and mixtures with medium-leaved Retor the lowest, whereas mixtures with small-leaved Gwenda yielded most grass DM. In 1995 averaged over cutting treatments and mixtures, the mixtures yielded 11·8 t DM ha?1 with a white clover content of 0·6; the apparent N fixation was 393 kg N ha?1. In 1996 these values declined to 8·5 t DM ha?1, 0·48 white clover and 236 kg N ha?1. There was no significant effect of cutting frequency on DM yield or white clover content, whereas the effects of grass cultivar were not consistent. In spring there was a peak in the DM production of the mixtures, coinciding with a peak in production of the grass component. However, in summer and autumn the seasonal pattern of DM production of the mixtures was similar to that of the white clover component. Both cultivars of perennial ryegrass showed the same seasonal response, but the seasonal growth pattern of white clover differed slightly between clover cultivars and cutting treatments. In later years only one cutting frequency was imposed, and no yield measurements were taken. White clover was judged to have performed well during 1997; the clover content in September was very high (0·76), whereas in October 1998 it was 0·45. Mixtures with Alice contained most white clover. Despite fluctuations in white clover content during 1991–98, all clover cultivars had persisted 7 years after sowing, irrespective of companion grass cultivar, at both cutting treatments.  相似文献

The period of leaf expansion in white clover ( Trifolium repens ) grown with perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne ) in mixed swards and the relationship between the period of leaf expansion and leaf appearance rate were examined in a field experiment in The Netherlands in which two cutting frequencies (low and high) and three white clover cultivars (Alice, Retor and Gwenda) were used. A significant positive correlation existed between the period of leaf expansion and leaf appearance rate under a low frequency of cutting, indicating that a longer cutting interval might allow the expression of cultivar and environmental differences in both leaf expansion and leaf appearance rate. In most cases, frequent cutting tended to shorten the period of leaf expansion, which may be an important cause of lower dry-matter yield in the high frequency of cutting treatment. The large-leaved cv. Alice had a significantly longer period of leaf expansion than the other cultivars under frequent cutting in autumn. This might partly account for the mixtures with Alice having a greater proportion of white clover than the mixtures with Retor and Gwenda in autumn. Some of the variation between low- and high-frequency cutting treatments in the period of leaf expansion could be explained by mean and minimum temperatures (38% and 15% respectively).  相似文献

The hypothesis that dynamics of growth, branching of stolons and appearance of leaves are important for the persistence of white clover ( Trifolium repens ) in mixed swards was tested. The effect of cutting frequency and white clover cultivar on stolon and leaf dynamics was studied throughout the growing season in a field experiment. Mixtures of perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne ) and white clover cultivars with different leaf sizes, cvs. Alice, Gwenda and Retor, were evaluated for white clover persistence at two cutting frequencies. Stolon dynamics, stolon survival, leaf and node appearance rate, branching, flowering and stolon elongation rate were analysed and related to white clover content and yield.
There were clear seasonal fluctuations in stolon and leaf characteristics. Stolon elongation rate and appearance rates of nodes, leaves and branches declined in autumn. Temperature and irradiation explained a major part of the variation of stolon elongation rate and leaf appearance rate and 25% of the variation in stolon branching rate.
Significant and consistent differences in yield and botanical composition were found between mixtures. Mixtures with cv. Alice had the highest total and white clover yield and the highest white clover content, whereas mixtures with cv. Retor had the lowest yield and the lowest white clover content. Stolon elongation rate and stolon internode length were significantly higher in cv. Alice than in the other white clover cultivars, whereas cv. Retor had a significantly higher percentage of leaves with damage caused by insects and slugs than the other cultivars. Little support was found for the hypothesis that branching characteristics are a key component of competitive success in mixed pasture, as most measured branching characteristics were not associated with differences in white clover yield between cultivars and cutting regimes.  相似文献

The aim was to study the effects of white clover cultivar and combinations with perennial ryegrass cultivars on seedling establishment in autumn‐sown swards and on winter survival of seedlings. Large‐leaved white clover cv. Alice and small‐leaved white clover cv. Gwenda, and an erect and a prostrate perennial ryegrass cultivar were sown in autumn in pure stands and as four binary grass‐clover mixtures. Mixtures of white clover cv. Huia and Aberherald with perennial ryegrass were also sown. Companion grasses had no significant impact on the establishment of white clover. The number of seedlings of white clover cv. Alice in mixtures (335 m?2) was higher than cv. Gwenda (183 m?2) and pure swards had similar white clover population densities as mixed swards. White clover cv. Huia tended to have more seedlings than Aberherald (355 and 205 m?2 respectively). No stolons were produced prior to a severe winter, because of the late sowing date. Winter survival of clover seedlings was 0·56 in mixtures and 0·69 in pure stands, irrespective of white clover or companion grass cultivar. Stolon development of white clover in autumn is often considered essential for overwintering survival and spring growth. In this study, there was considerable survival of the non‐stoloniferous tap‐rooted seedlings of all four clover cultivars despite a severe winter.  相似文献

The severity of damage by certain invertebrate species to white clover (Trifolium repens) leaves on the main stolons of plants grown in mixed perennial ryegrass/white clover swards was examined in a field experiment in the Netherlands in which two cutting frequencies (high and low) and three white clover cultivars (Retor, Alice and Gwenda) were used. The damage to the leaves was described in terms of the numbers of damaged leaves and the extent of that damage (slight <20%, moderate 20–50% and heavy >50%). The relationships between leaf damage and sward characteristics (white clover content, above-ground biomass and sward height) were evaluated throughout the growing season. Over the whole experimental period, 23·7% and 27·4% of the total number of leaves produced per stolon were damaged by slugs and weevils in the low- and high-frequency cutting treatments respectively. High-frequency cutting increased the number of leaves in the total leaf damage and moderate leaf damage categories by 21·4% and 34·8%, respectively, compared with the low-frequency cutting. The cv. Retor (medium-leaved) experienced the most severe damage by invertebrates. It had much higher leaf damage than cvs Alice (large-leaved) and Gwenda (small-leaved) at either cutting frequency, both in the total number of damaged leaves and in the different damage categories. Differences among cultivars in the number of damaged leaves and relative leaf damage occurred primarily in spring, late summer and autumn, but did not differ during the early- and mid-summer months. This study indicates that variations in leaf damage among clover cultivars were associated with differences in measured sward characteristics. Both the number of damaged leaves and the relative leaf damage were strongly negatively correlated with white clover content and biomass in spring, late summer and autumn under each cutting treatment. White clover content and biomass explained 65%, 59% and 50% of the variation in the number of damaged leaves in spring, late summer and autumn, respectively, and 58%, 57% and 45% of the variation in relative leaf damage in these three periods. Thus, sward characteristics may play a role in regulating the severity of invertebrate damage to clover leaves in addition to the primary effects of HCN.  相似文献

Performance of white clover/perennial ryegrass mixtures under cutting   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Clover persistence in mixtures of two varieties of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) with contrasting growth habits and three white clover (Trifolium repens) varieties differing in leaf sizes was evaluated at two cutting frequencies. An experiment was sown in 1991 on a clay soil. The plots received no nitrogen fertilizer. In 1992, 1993 and 1994, mixtures containing the large-leaved clover cv. Alice yielded significantly more herbage dry matter (DM) and had a higher clover content than mixtures containing cvs Gwenda and Retor. Companion grass variety did not consistently affect yield or botanical composition. Cutting at 2 t DM ha?1 resulted in slightly higher total annual yields than cutting at 1.2 t DM ha?1, but did not affect clover content. In 1992 the mixtures yielded, depending on cutting frequency and variety, 10·6–14·6 t DM ha?1 and 446–599 kg ha?1 N, whereas grass monocultures yielded only 1·2–2·0 t DM ha?1 and 25–46 kg ha?1 N. From 1992 to 1994 the annual mean total herbage yield of DM in the mixtures declined from 12·2 to 10·5 to 8·7 t ha?1, the white clover yield declined from 8·7 to 6·5 to 4·1 t ha?1 and the average clover content during the growing season declined from 71% to 61% to 46%, whereas the grass yield increased from 3·4 to 4·0 to 4·5 t ha?1. The N yield decreased from 507 to 406 to 265 kg N ha?1 and the apparent N fixation from 470 to 380 to 238 kg N ha?1. Nitrate leaching losses during the winters of 1992–93 and 1994–95 were highest under mixtures with cv. Alice, but did not exceed 10 kg N ha?1. The in vitro digestible organic matter (IVDOM) was generally higher in clover than in grass, particularly in the summer months. No differences in IVDOM were found among clover or grass varieties. The experiment will be continued to study clover persistence and the mechanisms that affect the grass/clover balance.  相似文献

Seven varieties or advanced breeding lines of white clover ( Trifolium repens L.), all of small leaf size, were grown separately in mixtures with perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne L.) in an experiment encompassing three harvest years. Harvestable dry-matter (DM) yield measurements were taken of these mixtures and of perennial ryegrass monocultures under two management regimes: cutting and continuous sheep grazing. Considerable differences were observed in the harvestable DM yields of white clover, perennial ryegrass and total yields of the mixtures between plots containing different white clover varieties. White clover yields were generally higher under cutting, and perennial ryegrass yields were higher under grazing. The difference between perennial ryegrass yield in monoculture and in mixture was variable. In the second harvest year, a significant interaction effect was seen between management and white clover variety for white clover yield but not for perennial ryegrass yield. The relationship between clover yield and grass yield differed between the two management regimes. Under cutting, a negative correlation was observed, indicative of competitive effects. However, under grazing, no such correlation was seen. Possible mechanisms underlying these outcomes are discussed.  相似文献

The selection by sheep (six Coopworth ewe hoggets, 44·3 ± 4·6 kg live weight) and goats (six Saanen/Anglo‐Nubian yearling males, 38·1 ± 3·8 kg live weight) for perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and white clover (Trifolium repens) and for sward height was measured in two experiments involving paired turves. Pairs of turves with herbage of differing height and of either the same or different plant species were offered. One sward (fixed height species, FHS) was always offered at 130 mm and the other (variable height species, VHS) at 130, 90 or 50 mm. Turves (450 mm × 220 mm) were cut to a soil depth of 100–150 mm from areas of perennial ryegrass and white clover regrown to the desired height after previously being cut to 30 mm. Each turf in a pair was weighed (±1 g) before and after grazing by penned animals maintained on a barley‐based pelleted diet. The number of prehending bites taken from each turf was recorded over a grazing period (128 ± 12 s). Bite mass, bite rate and intake rate were calculated. As the sward height of the VHS turf declined, an increasing proportion of the diet was selected from the 130 mm turf. When averaged over all height contrasts, both animal species selected a higher proportion (0·776 ± 0·026) of their diet from 130‐mm white clover than from 130‐mm perennial ryegrass (0·591 ± 0·018) turves. On average, goats selected a higher proportion (0·721 ± 0·022) of their dry‐matter (DM) intake from the 130‐mm turf than sheep (0·646 ± 0·019), but the effect was not consistent. In contrasts with perennial ryegrass as the VHS (and both perennial ryegrass and white clover as FHS), the proportion of the diet selected from the 130‐mm turf was very similar for both animal species. However, with white clover as the VHS (and both perennial ryegrass and white clover as FHS), goats selected a higher proportion of their intake from the 130‐mm turf to the extent that in the 130‐mm perennial ryegrass/50‐mm white clover contrast sheep showed as strong selection for 50‐mm white clover as goats did for 130‐mm perennial ryegrass. This lesser selection of goats for white clover as its height in a sward declines is likely to contribute to the higher white clover content observed in swards grazed by goats. Bite mass was greater on white clover (246 ± 5 mg DM bite–1) than on perennial ryegrass (173 ± 5 mg DM bite–1) and was greater for goats (255 ± 6 mg DM bite–1) than for sheep (195 ± 5 mg DM bite–1). Bite rate was greater on perennial ryegrass (45·9 ± 1·0 bites min–1) than on white clover (39·9 ± 1·0 bites min–1) and was greater for sheep (45·5 ± 1·1 bites min–1) than for goats (42·5 ± 1·1 bites min–1). Apparent intake rate by both sheep and goats was lower (mean, 5·0 ± 0·29 g DM min–1) on 130 mm perennial ryegrass/white clover than on 130 mm perennial ryegrass/perennial ryegrass (7·0 ± 0·27 g DM min–1), but was higher (9·62 ± 0·29 g DM min–1) on 130‐mm white clover/perennial ryegrass than on 130‐mm white clover/white clover (8·2 ± 0·29 g DM min–1) combinations.  相似文献

Four‐species mixtures and pure stands of perennial ryegrass, tall fescue, white clover and red clover were grown in three‐cut and five‐cut systems at Ås, southern Norway, at a low fertilization rate (100 kg N ha?1 year?1). Over a three‐year experiment, we found strong positive effects of species diversity on annual dry‐matter yield and yield stability under both cutting frequencies. The overyielding in mixtures relative to pure stands was highest in the five‐cut system and in the second year. Among the possible pairwise species interaction effects contributing to the diversity effect, the grass–grass interaction was the strongest, being significant in both cutting systems and in all years. The grass–legume interactions were sometimes significant, but no significant legume–legume interaction could be detected. Competitive relationships between species varied from year to year and also between cutting systems. Estimations based on species identity effects and pair‐specific interactions suggested that the optimal proportions of red clover, white clover, perennial ryegrass and tall fescue in seed mixtures would have been around 0·1, 0·2, 0·4 and 0·3 in the three‐cut system, and 0·1, 0·3, 0·3 and 0·3 in the five‐cut system.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N), accumulating in stubble, stolons and roots, is an important component in N balances in perennial ryegrass–white clover swards, and the effects of cutting frequency on the biomass of above‐ and below‐harvest height were studied during two consecutive years. Total dry matter (DM) and total N production, and N2 fixation, were measured at two cutting frequencies imposed in the summers of two years either by cutting infrequently at monthly intervals to simulate mowing or by frequent cutting at weekly intervals to simulate grazing. Total DM production harvested was in the range of 3000–7000 kg DM ha?1 with lower DM production associated with the frequent cutting treatment, and it was significantly affected by the different weather conditions in the two years. The higher cutting frequency also reduced the biomass below harvest height but the different weather conditions between years had less effect on stubble and, in particular, biomass of roots. The biomass of roots of white clover was significantly lower than that of roots of perennial ryegrass and remained at a relatively constant level (200–500 kg DM ha?1) throughout the experiment, whereas the biomass of perennial ryegrass roots increased from 2400 kg DM ha?1 in the year of establishment to 10 200 kg DM ha?1 in the infrequent cutting treatment and 6650 kg DM ha?1 in the frequent cutting treatment by the end of the experiment, giving shoot:root ratios of 4·7–16·6 and 0·5–1·6 for white clover and perennial ryegrass respectively. Annual N2 fixation was in the range of 28–214 kg N ha?1, and the proportion of N fixed in stolons and roots was on average 0·28. However, as weather conditions affect the harvested DM production and the shoot:root ratio, care must be taken when estimating total N2 fixation based on an assumed or fixed shoot:root ratio.  相似文献

Silages were made from pure crops of perennial ryegrass, red clover and white clover over 2 years. In all but one case the silage was stored as bales. A silage additive specially adapted for bales (Kofasil UltraTM) was used for all silages and they were all of good hygienic quality. The additive contained sodium nitrite, hexamethylene, tetraamine sodium bensoate and sodium propionate. The silages were offered ad libitum, either pure or mixed [grass/clover 0·50/0·50 on a dry‐matter (DM) basis] with a fixed amount (8 kg) of concentrate. Two experiments, one in each year, were performed with high‐yielding multiparous dairy cows in mid‐lactation, and both rumen‐cannulated and intact cows were used. The experiments were carried out using an incomplete changeover design with fifteen cows and five treatments each year. The cows consumed large quantities of these silages (12·7–16·3 kg DM per cow per day). The highest intakes were obtained when the red clover and the 0·50 red clover:0·50 perennial ryegrass silage diets were offered. However, there was a difference between years. In year 1, 0·50 red clover:0·50 perennial ryegrass and 0·50 white clover:0·50 perennial ryegrass silage diets showed the highest intakes while pure perennial ryegrass and white clover silage diets gave lower intakes. In year 2 the highest intake of silage was obtained when the diet containing silage from red clover from a second cut was offered, while the silage from red clover from a first cut gave the lowest intake. The voluntary intakes of silages from white clover and perennial ryegrass were intermediate. No cases of bloat or other digestive disturbances were observed. Milk yield was significantly lower for the perennial ryegrass silage diet compared with all other diets in year 1. In year 2 milk yield was highest for the white clover silage diets and lowest for the red clover silage diets from both cuts. In year 1 there were relatively small differences in milk composition while in year 2 milk fat content was significantly lower with white clover silage diet and milk protein content was significantly higher with the perennial ryegrass diet. The overall conclusion from these experiments was that cows were able to consume large quantities of pure legume silage without serious disturbance to their metabolism. Differences in measurements of rumen metabolism were found between diets and especially between years. Milk production differences appears to be coupled to both differences in rumen physical characteristics, such as passage rate and particle size as well as differences in volatile fatty acid production in the rumen.  相似文献

A series of twenty-four swards containing different proportions of white clover (0·20-0·25) and perennial ryegrass were created by using different seed mixtures, herbicide applications and previous cutting Frequencies. These swards were used to study the diet of oesophageally-fistulated wether sheep which grazed the various swards for a 30-min period after 1, 2 and 3 weeks of regrowth.
The proportion of white clover in the diet was generally greater than that in the sward. Fifty-seven percent of the variation in the proportion of white clover in the diet could be attributed to the proportion of white clover in the sward. White clover and perennial ryegrass leaf and stem were grazed to the same height and the proportion of white clover in the grazed horizon of the sward explained 83% of the variation in the proportion of white clover in the diet. The proportion of white clover in the diet was greater than the proportion in the grazed horizon of the sward in week 3 of regrowth, but not in weeks 1 and 2, and greater when the proportion of white clover in the grazed horizon was lower than 0·20. Both these observations were interpreted as indicating selection for white clover by the sheep within the grazed horizon.
There was a positive and linear relationship between the depth of the grazed horizon and sward height which, together with the relationship between the proportion of white clover in the grazed horizon and in the diet, would allow the prediction of the proportion of white clover of the diet from the height and the white clover content of the grazed horizon of the sward.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the associative effects between fresh perennial ryegrass and fresh white clover on intake and digestion in sheep. Five proportions of ryegrass and white clover, ranging from 0 to 1 in 0·25 increments (DM basis), were allocated to two groups of five sheep according to a replicated 5 × 5 Latin square design, and intake behaviour and digestive parameters including methane (CH4) emissions were measured. Feeding behaviour was affected through increased forage intake when the proportion of white clover was increased, and there were positive associative effects on intake, eating time and eating rate during the main meals consumed immediately after feed was given. These effects seemed to be related to a greater motivation to eat, rather to more efficient digestion, as no difference on DM digestibility (average 766 g kg?1) was detected. There were no differences in CH4 yield (average 18·1 g kg?1 DM intake) among the treatments. The optimal proportion of white clover fed with ryegrass to optimize intake and digestion was between 0·25 and 0·50. These results indicate that mixing perennial ryegrass and white clover positively affects forage intake in sheep and their motivation to eat.  相似文献

Seven forage types (diploid and tetraploid perennial ryegrass, Italian ryegrass and hybrid ryegrass, a low‐input mixture of perennial ryegrass, cocksfoot, timothy and meadow fescue, a mixture of perennial ryegrass and white clover, and monoculture of red clover) were sown in late July 2004. Each received one of four rates of dairy cattle slurry in three annual applications by trailing shoe, which supplied average nitrogen (N) inputs of 0·0, 114·9, 204·8 and 301·2 kg N ha?1 annum?1. Treatments were cut either three or four times annually over four years. Average dry‐matter yield (DM) response to slurry N was 15·6 kg DM kg?1 N. Lowest recovery of slurry N was in the second application each year (after first cut). The data suggest that slurry applied to Italian ryegrass, and also to swards containing legumes on soils with high phosphorus content, will produce a lower DM response to slurry N and result in a lower slurry N recovery than on swards of perennial ryegrass or cocksfoot‐dominant low‐input mixtures. Apparent recovery of slurry N was low at the second cut, especially when first‐cut yields had been high. To maximize slurry N recovery, application to regrowths with potentially slow rates of growth or high legume content should be avoided.  相似文献

Twelve plots were laid down on an existing perennial ryegrass/white clover sward, one plot in each of six replicated blocks receiving 100 kg  N ha−1 (100N) and one plot receiving no N (0N). Biomass, canopy development (stratified cuts and point quadrat records at 2–4-week intervals) and changes in stolon population density were recorded during one 8-week regrowth period (25 July–23 September) to investigate the likely causes of N effects on white clover in mixed swards.
Over the period, N fertilizer resulted in an increase of 74% in perennial ryegrass biomass and a reduction of 24% in white clover biomass. There was also a reduction of 44% in stolon growing point density, mainly due to lower density of younger stolon branches. White clover's contribution to the upper three leaf area index (LAI) units (taken as an estimate of the proportion of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) intercepted) was, on average, 70% at 0N producing 74% of the sward biomass, compared with 46% contribution to interception and 37% contribution to biomass at 100N.
While there was no evidence of overtopping, it is concluded that N fertilizer application increased the LAI of perennial ryegrass in the upper layers of the canopy thereby reducing the share of available PAR to white clover. This, coupled with a lower radiation use efficiency at high N and lower population density, results in white clover's reduced performance in mixed swards receiving N fertilizer.  相似文献

The performance of timothy in mixtures with perennial ryegrass was assessed under a simulated intensive grazing management over two harvest years in 1974–75. Three seed rates of S23 perennial ryegrass were factorially combined with three rates of Scots timothy and compared with pure stands of each grass. All were sown with Huia white clover. When cut six times at monthly intervals and with an annual N input of 350 kg ha?1, there were no significant differences in total DM production in either year. The 2-year mean DM yield for the nine mixtures and six pure swards was 9·77 t ha?1 (range 9·34–10·16). Compared with the pure ryegrass swards, in both years the ryegrass-timothy mixtures produced earlier spring growth but were significantly lower yielding at the second cut. Over the first five cuts the proptortion of timothy in the three mixtures with 22·4 kg ha?1 ryegrass seed averaged 26% in the first year and 37% in the second. Corresponding calculated mean DM yields of timothy were 2·75 and 3·00 t ha?1. It is concluded that an early timothy variety is capable of competing with a late-heading perennial ryegrass in frequently cut swards managed to simulate intensive grazing. The strong development of timothy in the dry summer of 1975 suggests that in mixtures of late perennial ryegrass varieties, an early variety of timothy should be beneficial for its spring growth in grazed swards.  相似文献

Five binary perennial grass/white clover (Trifolium repens, cv. Menna) mixtures were evaluated over a 3-year period under continuous sheep stocking together with the imposition of a rest period for either an early or a late conservation cut; the experiment with plot sizes of 0·16 ha was replicated three times. The grass species and cultivars used were Merlinda tetraploid and Magella diploid perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne), Prairial cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata), Rossa meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis) and Goliath timothy (Phleum pratense). The greatest total lengths of white clover stolon developed in the meadow fescue (171·6 m m?2) and timothy (151·9 m m?2) associations compared with those in tetraploid perennial ryegrass (98·6 m m?2), diploid perennial ryegrass (91·9 m m?2) and cocksfoot (74·6 m m?2) (s.e.d. 16·4, P < 0·001). On average, the proportion of white clover stolon that was buried was between 0·86 and 0·89 and this was more abundant in late than early season. Whereas timothy persisted, the persistence of meadow fescue was low under any of the managements tested and this was markedly reduced by the third grazing season. In the diploid perennial ryegrass sward, a late June to early August rest period for conservation enhanced white clover stolon length. An early April to late May rest period greatly reduced total white clover stolon length in both diploid perennial ryegrass and tetraploid perennial ryegrass associations (diploid perennial ryegrass-unrested 89 m m?2, early rest 56·1 m m?2, late rest 130·7 m m?2; tetraploid perennial ryegrass - unrested 125·1 m m?2, early rest 71 m m?2, late rest 99·7 m m?2; s.e.d. 19·19, P < 0·001). The numbers of white clover stolon growing points per unit stolon length were greatest when the sward was rested during late June to early August ?55·9 m?1 stolon length compared with 45·7 m?1 for an April to late May rest and 46 m?1 in the absence of a rest (s.e.d. 2·59, P < 0·001). Likewise, the percentage of stolon above ground was greatest with the late June to early August rest ?15·78% compared with 10·61% for the April to late May rest and 7·69% for no rest (s.e.d. 1·569, P < 0·001). The complementary percentages of buried stolon indicate the important role this fraction has and the need to study stolon behaviour in grazing studies generally. It is concluded that, in relation to perennial ryegrass as a companion grass, meadow fescue and timothy allow better white clover development and cocksfoot less. However, other attributes have to be considered, for example the poor persistence of meadow fescue and the slower regrowth of timothy, both of which allow the invasion of weed grasses, or the lower acceptability of cocksfoot to livestock. The timing of the rest period before the conservation cut can influence white clover development considerably, but the effects differed with different companion grasses.  相似文献

Four cultivars of perennial ryegrass (intermediate diploid cv. Talbot and tetraploid cv. Barlatra, and late diploid cv. Parcour and tetraploid cv. Petra) were each sown at 10,20 and 30 kg ha-1, all with 3 kg ha-1 of white clover cv. Donna. Herbage productivity was measured over 3 harvest years, 1982–84. under two annual rates of fertilizer N (0 and 150 kg ha-1); the 150 kg ha-1 rate was split equally between March and August applications. Fertilizer N increased total herbage DM production; the 3-year means for the 0 and 150 kg ha-1 N rates were 8·04 and 8·91 t ha-1, respectively. In successive years, total herbage responses to N (kg DM (kg N applied)-1) were 6·6, 35 and 72 (overall mean, 58). Mean white clover DM production over the 3 years was reduced from 4·48 t ha-1 at nil N to 2·82 t ha-1 at the 150 kg ha-1 rate, a fall of 37%. Grass seed rate did not influence total herbage production or white clover performance. The two intermediate perennial ryegrass cultivars had a marginal advantage in total herbage production over the two late cultivars, but white clover content and production were higher with tetraploids than diploids. It is concluded that the value of increased herbage production from strategic use of fertilizer N has to be weighed against its depressive effect on white clover performance; application of 75 kg ha ha-1 N in both spring and autumn was excessively high if maintenance of a good white clover content in the sward is an objective. There is considerable flexibility in the grass: clover seed ratio in seeds mixtures. Modern highly-productive perennial ryegrass varieties do not differ substantially in compatibility with white clover but tetraploids permit better clover performance than diploids.  相似文献

Mixed swards of white clover–grass mixtures in highly productive environments often fail to reach the minimum recommended annual clover proportion of about 0·30. This study assessed the effect on clover content and total dry matter (DM) yield of two spring N applications (0 and 45 kg N ha?1) and two distances between drilled grass‐rows (0·18 and 0·36 m) over 3 years for mown swards of white clover–Italian ryegrass (Trifolium repens–Lolium multiflorum) in binary mixtures in northern Italy. An additional aim was to determine the advantage of association of grass–clover compared with grass and clover monocultures. On average, N fertilization of mixtures resulted in almost 9% higher total yield (P < 0·01; mean response = 18·1 kg of total DM per kg of N) but decreased the clover proportion (0·250 vs. 0·312). Wider grass‐row spacing increased clover proportion (0·327 vs. 0·234; P < 0·01) with no reduction of total DM yield. N fertilization × grass‐row spacing interaction occurred only for clover content (P < 0·01). Without N fertilization, mixtures out‐yielded clover and grass pure stands. With N fertilization, at double rate to pure grass, yields from mixtures were greater than from clover and comparable to Italian ryegrass.  相似文献

A field study was undertaken between April 2003 and May 2004 in southern Tasmania, Australia to quantify and compare changes in herbage productivity and water‐soluble carbohydrate (WSC) concentration of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), prairie grass (Bromus willdenowii Kunth.) and cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L.) under a defoliation regime based on leaf regrowth stage. Defoliation interval was based on the time taken for two, three or four leaves per tiller to fully expand. Dry‐matter (DM) production and botanical composition were measured at every defoliation event; plant density, DM production per tiller, tiller numbers per plant and WSC concentration were measured bimonthly; and tiller initiation and death rates were monitored every 3 weeks. Species and defoliation interval had a significant effect (P < 0·05) on seasonal DM production. Prairie grass produced significantly more (P < 0·001) DM than cocksfoot and ryegrass (5·7 vs. 4·1 and 4·3 t DM ha?1 respectively). Plants defoliated at the two‐leaf stage of regrowth produced significantly less DM than plants defoliated at the three‐ and four‐leaf stages, irrespective of species. Defoliation interval had no effect on plant persistence of any species during the first year of establishment, as measured by plant density and tiller number. However, more frequent defoliation was detrimental to the productivity of all species, most likely because of decreased WSC reserves. Results from this study confirmed that to maximize rates of regrowth, the recommended defoliation interval for prairie grass and cocksfoot is the four‐leaf stage, and for perennial ryegrass between the two and three‐leaf stages.  相似文献
