The alfalfa leafcutting bee, Megachile rotundata (Fabricius), is a valuable wild and managed pollinator of lowbush blueberry (syn. ‘wild blueberry’, Vaccinium angustifolium Ait.), in Atlantic Canada. As some insecticides may present a hazard to pollinators, we assessed the susceptibility of M. rotundata to insecticides used or projected for future use in lowbush blueberry pest management. In topical direct contact bioassays, adults were susceptible to phosmet, spinosad, spinetoram, and deltamethrin. Based on findings from these laboratory studies, it appears that when used at recommended or projected application rates, each of these compounds poses a hazard to M. rotundata by direct contact. In a second experiment, eggs and larvae were collected in the field and their pollen provisions were treated with deltamethrin, flubendiamide, and spinetoram at field relevant concentrations. Larvae treated with deltamethrin and spinetoram in the laboratory either died before spinning a cocoon or, in the case of spinetoram, occasionally pupated without spinning a cocoon. Flubendiamide was not toxic to adult M. rotundata by direct contact and had no effect on larval survivorship, or time to complete cocoon spinning. Emergence after overwintering was relatively poor overall, but there was no effect of treatment. Based on these results, flubendiamide appears safe to use in the presence of M. rotundata, whereas the other insecticides we tested may pose a hazard.  相似文献

Kaolin is an inert material with a broad range of applications, e.g. as an insecticide and as a filling substance in the formulation of biopesticides. Hence, bees that dispense biopesticides to the field in the context of entomovectoring are exposed to elevated risks because of side-effects of those products. Here, we investigated with use of bumble bee workers of Bombus terrestris L. the lethal and sublethal effects of (i) pure kaolin, (ii) the biofungicide Prestop-Mix containing the parasitic fungus Gliocladium catenulatum and kaolin and (iii) the bioinsecticide BotaniGard containing the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana and compared with wheat flour powder that we considered safe for bumble bees. As the most important result, treatment with kaolin increased the cuticular water loss and reduced the survival of treated bumble bees, while Prestop-Mix had no negative effect on longevity. BotaniGard caused mortality in the bumble bees because of the entomopathogenic spores it contained. In conclusion, our data indicated that substances used as ‘inert materials’ and in biocontrol agents which are used in IPM and organic farming systems may bring higher risks to bumble bees used in entomovector technology.  相似文献

Agriculture relies on ecosystem services, such as biological control of pests, for economic success and sustainability. Commercially managed lowbush blueberries are an important crop in eastern North America, but pest control by natural enemies has not been well studied. In this paper we address questions about consumption of two blueberry pests by ground beetles (Carabidae) that are common in blueberry fields. In the first experiment, a Poecilus l. lucublandus, Carabus nemoralis, or Pterostichus mutus beetle was placed with two blueberry spanworm larvae, Itame argillacearia, in a simple (cup only or cup + soil) or more complex (cup + soil + blueberry sprigs) treatment arena. In most cases, probability of spanworm consumption reached 100 % in simple arenas by the end of the experiment (48 h) but was 25–50 % lower in more complex arenas. In a second experiment, a male or female Pterostichus melanarius or Harpalus rufipes beetle was placed in a plastic container with saturated or dry soil into which mature blueberry maggots, Rhagoletis mendax, dropped from blueberries to pupate. Approximately 40–80 and 35 % fewer pupae were recovered when a P. melanarius and H. rufipes beetle was present, respectively, but soil moisture and beetle sex were not significant factors. Our results demonstrate that ground beetles can prey upon important blueberry pests, but suggest that consumption may be influenced by microhabitat structure.  相似文献

Megaplatypus mutatus (= Platypus mutatus) (Chapuis) is an ambrosia beetle native to South America that attacks live trees, mining deeply into the xylem through large tunnels. This activity weakens the structural integrity of the tree, causing severe stem-breakage and mortality. Attacks are initiated by pioneer males that select a host tree and build short nuptial galleries, to which they attract females using a sexual pheromone. Previously, we showed the potential for the strategy of pheromone-mediated mating disruption of M. mutatus in commercial poplar and hazelnut plantations in South America and Europe using polyethylene reservoir dispensers for pheromones. In the present work we replaced the polymeric reservoir dispensers by monolithic dispensers made by dispersion of the pheromone in natural waxes and the addition of kaolin and we found that: prior to pheromone deployment, the mean number of galleries per tree did not differ significantly between the control and treated plots and the same was observed after the mating disruption treatment for the control plot but not for treated plots, where the mean number of galleries were reduced. These findings confirm that mating disruption is a viable tool for management of M. mutatus in poplar plantations. Using natural wax dispensers has obvious advantages from an environmental point of view.  相似文献

The fruit production of flowering plants critically depends on the pollination services provided by animals that compete for flower resources. The output of competitive interactions between ants and bees for inflorescences of jambolan Syzygium jambolanum (Myrtaceae) in an agroforestry system in Brazilian Meridional Amazonian are an interesting system of investigation due the possibility to control variables experimentally. In 20 S. jambolanum individuals we performed 300 treatments in different inflorescences of two strata (upper and lower) as follows: (1) ants exclusion, (2) bees exclusion, and (3) control group where ants and bees could access the inflorescences. There was no difference in the number of inflorescences, volume of nectar and sugar concentration between the strata. Also the visitors considered are distributed equally in the tree??s stratum. When bees were prevented from access the inflorescences, ants dominated more inflorescences only in the lower stratum. On the contrary, when ants were excluded, bees visited more inflorescences only in the upper stratum. We conclude that ants prevent the access to bees and vice versa as the result of different ability of resource utilization and foraging strategies. Thus, preventing the access of ants to the floral nectar could increase the level of nectar available to pollinators of S. jambolanum, thereby increasing productivity and reducing economic losses.  相似文献

Context

The reforestation of degraded tropical pastures requires innovative tree planting systems that consider land user needs.

Aim

We established a silvopastoral reforestation system and assessed the effects of companion trees on the native timber tree Tabebuia rosea in Panama. Timber tree individuals were established in (1) solitary plantings (TSol) or in companion plantings with (2) Guazuma ulmifolia (TGua) or (3) the nitrogen-fixing Gliricidia sepium (TGli).

Methods

We quantified growth characteristics and herbivory of T. rosea, and analyzed leaf chemistry (including the stable isotopes ??15N and ??13C) and structure (leaf mass per area).

Results

Companion trees significantly affected stem diameter growth of T. rosea. Stem diameter growth was as high in TGli trees as in TSol trees but was reduced in TGua trees. Furthermore, TGua trees had higher leaf water content, and lower ??13C and lower leaf mass-to-area ratio than TGli trees, suggesting there were effects of shading by G. ulmifolia on T. rosea. Herbivory was high but not affected by planting regimes. Leafing phenology did not differ between planting regimes and G. sepium did not increase nitrogen content in T. rosea leaves.

Conclusion

Companion tree planting can support timber tree growth in silvopastoral reforestations, but adequate species selection is crucial for successful implementation of this planting system. Tree?Ctree interactions seem to be more relevant for timber tree growth than herbivory in the studied system.  相似文献

Since the beginning of the invasion of the horse chestnut leafminer, Cameraria ohridella Deschka and Dimic 1986 (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae), into Europe over 20 years ago the damage to white flowering horse chestnut trees, Aesculus hippocastanum L (Sapindales: Hippocastanaceae) has remained extensive. This study evaluates the possible use of pheromone mating disruption as a control option against the horse chestnut leafminer. The heterogeneous distribution of ornamental trees in parks and gardens requires a different approach to evaluate pest control than in homogeneous crop fields, orchards or plantations where mating disruption is usually applied. For this reason we set up field experiments with host trees of the same age and size in field tents with a defined number of leafminers in two different densities. In the first experiment the effective quantity of newly developed C. ohridella pheromone dispensers was tested by recapturing males using traps baited with virgin females. Ninety-five percent less males were captured if three or more dispensers were positioned at a 4 m radius around the outside of an experimental tent. This set up was then used in the second experiment where male and female leafminers were released into field tents in order to assess the effect of pheromone on the reduction of leaf mining damage. Surprisingly, the pheromone dispensers were found to have no effect on the number of leaf mines at either low or high leafminer densities. Mating sites of the horse chestnut leafminer, multiple matings and distribution of pheromone dispenser are discussed as possible factors influencing the outcome in this study.  相似文献

We describe a series of experiments on the protection of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) logs and standing trees against Ips typographus L. (Coleoptera: Scolytidae). The tested protective materials were applied 1) at point sources and 2) area-covering using zeolite-based dispensers. We performed 11 terrestrial and one aerial application (using a helicopter) between 1992 and 2001. We gradually replaced polyethylene-bag verbenone dispensers by composite dispensers releasing verbenone and non-host volatiles (NHV: green leaf volatiles, trans-conophthorin, and C8-alcohols). Many experiments did not give statistically significant results, due to the low number of true replicates and the spatial heterogeneity of beetle attacks. The protection of horizontal objects like logs or lying trees with anti-attractants was not always successful. In the future, positive results can be expected with an area covering spray applied by zeolite dispensers containing mixtures of verbenone and NHV. A similar approach could probably be used in aerial spraying of anti-attractants. We have succeeded in our attempt to protect zones of standing spruce trees from I. typographus attacks. We used dispensers with a combination of verbenone and a full blend of NHV compounds. The protection is not complete, but in both 2000 and 2001, the treatment significantly decreased the probability of the insect attack on trees by 60–80?%.  相似文献

Boreal forests are currently facing intensified logging pressures, yet we know little about impacts of logging on the pollination community. This study extends research done immediately before and after logging, to consider its longer term effects. We censused bumble bee and flower communities 8–9 years after experimental variable retention logging. Harvest treatments left 0%, 10–20%, 50–75%, or 100% of the original trees after logging. Total bumble bee and floral abundances were increased by all forms of logging; however the floral community in retention cuts (i.e., 10–20% and 50–75% of trees remaining) was more similar to undisturbed controls than was the community in clearcuts. Bumble bees in low-retention treatments (i.e. 10–20%) were in an ideal free distribution (IFD) with their floral resources, which allows for equal per-flower rate of visitation, regardless of local flower density. In clearcuts (i.e. 0%) and high-retention areas (i.e. 50–75%) bees were at an IFD with respect to the density of their floral resources, but undermatched (in 50–75% treatments) or were resource-independent (in 0% treatments) with respect to the energetic value of their floral resources. Bees in unlogged forest controls (i.e., 100%) deviated from an IFD by undermatching. Overall, low-retention logging (10–20%) was an improvement over clearcutting, because there was less change to the floral community, while still allowing for the achievement of an ideal free distribution. However, unlogged forest appeared to be negatively affected (in the lack of an IFD) by the presence of adjacent logged forests: numerical responses of bees to flowers were altered, with implications for bee foraging success and plant pollination service. Forest reserves should therefore incorporate buffer zones when adjacent to logged forest, to preserve the inter-relationships in their bee-influenced pollination community.  相似文献

With the aim of optimizing the trapping ofHyphantria cunea (Drury) males through pheromones, the activity of various traps, doses of pheromone components and dispensers was investigated. The best degree of activity was obtained by funnel traps (Uni-traps) with high capture ability and satisfactory representation of the flight curve when the population of the moth is high. On the contrary, the sticky traps gave good results in low density population. Comparing the activity ofH. cunea to the pheromones, (3Z, 6Z, 9S 10R)-cis-9,10-epoxy-1,3,6-heneicosatriene (or TEP), (3Z, 6Z, 9S 10R)-cis-9,10-epoxy-3,6-heneicosatriene (or DEP) and linolenic aldehyde (or TAL), the results obtained showed different responses according to the areas considered. Blend 1∶1∶1 of DEP:TAL:TEP revealed better results in the Venezia area (north-east Italy), while the activity of the Japanese dispenser (2∶30∶1) was highest in the Novara area (north-west Italy); on the contrary no significant differences were noted in Bergamo, the middle area considered. These results denote that the Italian population ofH. cunea could be made up of different strains, introduced from different geographical areas, with the presence of pheromone dialects.  相似文献

以黄栌枯萎病发病植株的根部所分离到的3种优势菌株作为供试菌株,利用新型电感电容表和电导率仪分别测定黄栌的树干电容、电阻和叶片电导率等生物电指标的变化,发现接种不同真菌菌株后黄栌的树干电容均值都呈现逐渐下降的趋势,树干阻抗均值、叶片细胞外渗液的相对电导率和叶片离子外渗百分率则都呈现逐渐增大的趋势。但接种Verticillium dahliae后黄栌出现枯萎病症状,且各项生物电指标均呈现更为显著的变化,其变化幅度较分别接种Fusarium sp.、Cylindrosporium sp.菌株后的电指标变化幅度大,而且树干电容和电阻在接种5 - 7天后表现出显著差异性,比病害症状出现提前7 - 10天;同时,受Verticillium dahliae侵染的植株和未受侵染植株在树体干部电容、阻抗和单位电容指标上差异显著,树干电阻与树干电容在植株受侵染后表现出更为显著的负相关关系。  相似文献

A pollination experiment was conducted with Parkia biglobosa (Fabaceae) in The Gambia. P. biglobosa is integrated in the farming systems and produces fruit pulp and seeds used in cooking. The species is bat-pollinated, and in areas with few bats the main pollinators are assumed to be honey bees. A higher rate of effective pollination will in many instances increase fruit production, and the aim of this study was to investigate pollination efficiency of different pollinators. Access of flower visiting animals to flowers was controlled by nets with differently sized mesh, using five trees as replicates. The pollinators’ identity, efficiency, and relative effect were determined. Bats, honey bees, and stingless bees were able to pollinate the species. Bat-visited capitula produced more pods, but not significantly more than honey bees. Honey bees were more efficient than stingless bees, resulting in significantly less aborted seeds. The treatment which excluded all flower visitors developed no mature pods, indicating that P. biglobosa was not autonomous autogamous, apomictic, or parthenocarpic, while the treatment with confined honey bees showed that geitonogamy is possible. Sugar content of fruit pulp was analysed and a positive correlation between number of seeds per pod and the sugar content was found. Improved pollination success may thus result in sweeter fruits. We conclude it is important to strive against a pollinator-friendly environment in order to attract bats and bees. Furthermore, we suggest beekeeping in the vicinity of P. biglobosa as a way to increase yield.  相似文献

Varroa mite (Varroa destructor Anderson and Trueman) is a major global threat to the western honey bee (Apis mellifera L.). The ectoparasite has been implicated in the spread of honeybee viruses. Beekeeping plays a major role in transmission of the mite. The study aimed at assessing levels of Varroa infestation, bee viruses and bacteria incidences in domesticated honeybee colonies. Samples of adult honey bees, bee brood and Varroa mites were collected from Baringo, Narok, Kwale, Magarini, Voi, Ijara, Busia and Siaya in Kenya. Ten hives in each site were inspected for the presence of Varroa mites on adult bees using the icing sugar technique and forceps in sealed brood cells. The number of mites observed were recorded per site. Ribonucleic acid was extracted from the mites, brood and adult bees and a polymerase chain reaction was performed to detect the black queen cell virus. Pooled RNA samples of brood and adult bees were used in next generation sequencing on a 454 GS FLX platform to detect bee viruses and bacteria. Varroa mites were reported in all the study sites at varying levels. The black queen cell virus and three iflaviruses, European foul brood and its secondary causative agent Enterococcus faecalis were reported. The Kenyan honeybee population is threatened by bee pests and pathogens. There is a need for constant monitoring of bee pests and diseases in honeybee colonies in the country for early detection and to provide data on the status of bee health. All stakeholders in the beekeeping value chain should be enlightened on their role in pest and disease transmission.  相似文献

Development of understory vegetation has been influenced by the many densely stocked second-growth forest stands in North America, which have an extended stem exclusion successional stage. Understory composition and structure is important for ecosystem functioning, while also having social and economic value through the harvest of certain herb and shrub species. The potential for co-management of young and mature, managed and unmanaged stands for timber and non-timber forest products (NTFPs) was assessed in two separate replicated experiments. Experiment A examined pole-sized lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) stands that had been pre-commercially thinned (PCT) to target densities of 250, 500, 1000, and 2000 stems/ha. Half of each of these four thinning units was repeatedly fertilized, resulting in eight experimental units. Experiment B examined six different stand types: young plantations, pole-sized lodgepole pine stands either PCT, PCT plus repeated fertilization, or unthinned, mature, and old growth. Fifty-four herb and shrub species were identified as potential NTFPs, with the responses of individual species, as well as mean total herb, shrub, berry-producing and overall total NTFPs being assessed. In Experiment A, mean total abundance (crown volume index) of NTFPs, as well as mean total herb NTFPs were significantly greater in fertilized than in unfertilized stands. Thinning treatments did not significantly affect NTFP volume, however, fertilization treatments produced five significant responses by individual species (Achillea millefolium, Epilobium angustifolium, Taraxacum officinale, Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, Rubus idaeus). In Experiment B, four of the six species responses that were significant had greater abundance in young, managed stands (young plantation, thinned, or thinned-fertilized) than in the unmanaged stands. Mean total NTFP volume and mean total herb NTFP volume also followed this pattern. A. uva-ursi, E. angustifolium, Lonicera involucrata, Sorbus sitchensis and Thalictrum occidentale all had significantly higher abundance in young, managed stands than in all other treatments. Results suggest that co-management for timber and NTFPs is possible in this ecosystem, with further research needed to evaluate livelihood values of these crops.  相似文献

The effects of canopy disturbance on the abundance, growth, morphological plasticity, biomass allocation and fruit production of velvet leaf blueberry (Vaccinium myrtilloides Michx.) were examined in 1996 in a second-growth boreal mixedwood forest near Nipigon, northwestern Ontario that had been logged by either shelterwood cutting or clearcutting in 1993. We found that V. myrtilloides was able to persist in both open and closed canopy boreal mixedwood forests managed for commercial timber extraction. Persistence under heavy shade conditions was accompanied by significant morphological and biomass allocation plasticity. Specific leaf area, leaf area, individual leaf weight, and the proportion of total biomass in stems and foliage changed along an understory light gradient from 0% to 67% percent photosynthetic photon flux density (% PPFD). The degree of above-ground morphological plasticity may explain blueberry's ability to survive under low light conditions. Reproductive performance of V. myrtilloides was greatest under the partial shade conditions associated with shelterwood cutting. Blueberry bushes growing in clearcuts overgrown with 3-year old aspen (Populous tremuloides Michx.) saplings remained mostly vegetative whereas the number, fresh weight and dry weight of berries in shelterwood cuts was 94% grater than that produced after clearcutting. We attributed the lower fruit yields in the clearcuts to heavy shading from regenerating hardwoods, and mechanical damage to above-ground biomass. The paucity of seedling regeneration as well as extensive mechanical damage to above-ground stems by logging equipment delayed vegetative regeneration of V. myrtilloides in large canopy openings of the clearcut blocks. Unlike other more aggressive ericaceous species (e.g. Kalmia angustifolia var. angustifolia L., Gaultheria shallon Pursh.), V. myrtilloides was unable to resist invasion from faster growing hardwood species (e.g. P. tremuloides) and was rapidly overtopped. V. myrtilloides plants in the uncut control blocks received 3.9% of full sunlight, whereas those growing in the partial cut and clearcut blocks received an average of 25.3% and 32.5% PPFD, respectively. Cover of vegetation over-topping blueberry plants was highest in the uncut forest (90.3%), but was not significantly different between the partial cut (45.5%) and clearcut (50.1%) treatment blocks.  相似文献

Vegetation development over a 20-year period following clearcutting in balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.)-yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis Britt.) ecosystems was examined in a study area located in eastern Québec, Canada. Vegetation, physiographic and soil data were collected in 10 mature ecosystems and in 30 ecosystems harvested 5 years ago (10), 10 years ago (10), or 20 years ago (10). The 40 ecosystems had similar physiographic and soil characteristics. They were typically located on mesic sites situated on ground moraines thicker than 50 cm. Following harvesting, sites were invaded by competing species. Mountain maple (Acer spicatum Lamb.) was the most important competing species. Twenty years after logging, it fully occupied the sites with 7040 stems ha−1 (diameter at breast height ≥ 1 cm). Its regeneration stocking reached 88% with a density of 22775 stems ha−1. Wild red raspberry (Rubus idaeus L. var. strigosus (Michx.)) and fireweed (Epilobium angustifolium L.) were abundant during a 10-year period after logging, but disappeared almost completely afterwards. The abundance of competing species has considerably reduced site production for a period of 20 years and will probably continue to do so for 20 to 30 more years. The proportion of commercial deciduous species increased from 36% of the total number of stems (diameter at breast height ≥ 1 cm) in mature stands to 89% in stands harvested 20 years ago. Balsam fir and white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) advanced regeneration was considerably reduced. Stocking of these species went down from 76% in mature stands to only 27% in 20-year-old stands. As a result, it is unlikely that the harvested areas will naturally evolve toward the original climax balsam fir-yellow birch forest type in the foreseeable future.  相似文献

Understanding the early establishment requirements and performance of tropical tree seedlings is essential to ensuring the success of restoration plantings. This study was designed to characterize growth and light requirements of six common neotropical tree species Pseudosamanea guachapele (Fabaceae), Tabebuia impetiginosa (Bignoniaceae), Ceiba pentandra (Bombacaceae), Pachira quinata (Bombacaceae), Dalbergia retusa (Fabaceae), and Tabebuia rosea (Bignoniaceae) in an abandoned pasture under contrasting light environments and grass competition. Field studies were conducted in the pastures of the Santa Ana Conservation Center in Costa Rica. Two differing grass competition sites were selected, one dominated by a tall grass, Hyparrhenia rufa and another dominated by a short grass, Cynodon mlenfluensis. Three light treatments were created (2, 37 and 100% light) using either neutral shade cloth (2 and 37%) or no shade cloth (100%). Growth characteristics and biomass partitioning of the seedlings were measured. Species differed in their relative growth rates (RGRs). The light × species interaction was significant at both sites. While all species had similar performance under 100% light on both short grass and tall grass sites, species growth differences were evident under 37 and 2% light levels. For example, at the short grass site, T. rosea had higher RGR than D. retusa and P. quinata under 2% light whereas both Tabebuia species performed better than other species at the tall grass site. The general trend was to increase root mass ratio and decrease leaf mass ratio with increasing levels of light. As an initial step for restoring abandoned pasture lands we recommend using all these species in direct and moderate light conditions. Incorporating all species will create a more heterogeneous environment. Choosing light demanding species that can tolerate grass competition may help ensure success in the early stage of restoration.  相似文献
