Since its introduction from Asia, the brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys (Stål), has become a pest of many agricultural crops in the USA. Insect predators utilize H. halys as prey; however, the chemical cues used by them in prey location are largely unknown. Here, we hypothesized that tridecane, an H. halys-associated volatile, acts as a kairomone for the predaceous minute pirate bug, Orius insidiosus (Say). We conducted laboratory, greenhouse, and field experiments to: (1) assess the attraction of adult O. insidiosus to H. halys-damaged bean pods and tridecane in cage studies, and its effect on egg predation; (2) video record the behavioral response of O. insidiosus males and females to tridecane in a four-arm olfactometer; and (3) test whether Orius spp. are attracted to tridecane-baited sticky traps in peach, blueberry, and sunflower fields, and its effect on egg predation. In the greenhouse, O. insidiosus was attracted to H. halys-damaged pods and artificial plants baited with tridecane in the presence of prey (sentinel eggs); however, this attraction rarely led to increased egg predation. Although both O. insidiosus males and females spent more time in the arm of the olfactometer with tridecane, males were more responsive at a lower concentration than females. Similarly, Orius spp. were more attracted to tridecane-baited than unbaited traps in the field; however, there was no effect on egg predation. Altogether, while O. insidiosus is attracted to tridecane, this attraction did not always lead to higher predation, suggesting that this kairomone likely acts as an arrestant.  相似文献

Click beetles, the adult stage of wireworms, will enter fields of their preferred hosts (i.e., grasses, pasture, and cereals) from various reservoir habitats, and lay eggs which give rise to wireworm problems in subsequent years. To prevent click beetles, Agriotes obscurus, from immigrating into fields, a portable trench barrier composed of an extruded, PVC plastic trough was evaluated in 2001 in Agassiz, British Columbia, Canada. Plots of wheat or bare ground that were surrounded by trenches had significantly lower numbers of males in pheromone traps and females in pitfall traps relative to non-trenched plots. Exclusion was more pronounced in the first part of the study (about 75 % reduction) than later in the study (30–42 %), likely due to gradual within plot emergence of overwintered beetles and/or flight activity. The potential for use of exclusion devices for click beetle control and future directions for research are discussed.  相似文献

The endosymbiotic bacterium Wolbachia is being developed as a tool to suppress mosquito populations and their transmitted pathogens, with successful field trials in multiple countries having resulted in efforts to scale up the capacity to mass-produce mosquitoes for release. However, major challenges exist to achieving this goal, including concerns that mass-reared mosquitoes will adapt to laboratory conditions during long-term maintenance and experience inbreeding depression, resulting in poor performance of the released mosquitoes in the field. Here, we assessed the performance of the Aedes albopictus HC line infected with a triple-strain Wolbachia after mass-rearing at scaled-up densities of up to 15 million mosquitoes per week for over 50 generations. In comparison with the wild-type GUA line, the HC mosquitoes had desirable characteristics for mass-rearing and release, including robust male mating competitiveness, high female reproductive capacity, reduced vector competence for dengue virus, and increased Wolbachia density. Although the larval survival rate of the HC and GUA lines was similar, the HC larvae developed significantly faster, possibly because of up-regulation of the molting hormone 20-hydroxyecdysone-related gene E75 in the HC larvae. Our results indicate that over many generations mass-reared mosquito lines can retain their quality if large effective population sizes with sufficient genetic heterogeneity are maintained under optimized rearing conditions and demonstrate the long-term feasibility of deploying Wolbachia-based approaches for area-wide management of mosquito vectors for disease control.

To clarify the pathogenicity of Bursaphelenchus nematodes to adult pine trees, inoculation experiments using six species of B. xylophilus group nematodes and ca. 10‐year‐old trees of Pinus thunbergii were conducted. Trees inoculated with an avirulent isolate (C14‐5) of B. xylophilus did not die during the survey, but showed a decline in oleoresin exudation compared with the controls. Fifteen months after the inoculation, a small number of B. xylophilus survived in a tree inoculated with B. xylophilus C14‐5. Trees inoculated with B. mucronatus, B. doui, B. luxuriosae, B. conicaudatus and Bursaphelenchus sp. NK224 (undescribed) showed no decline in oleoresin exudation and no external symptoms of wilt. However, 9 months after the inoculation, a small number of B. luxuriosae survived in a tree inoculated with the nematodes, although four other nematode species were not isolated from trees inoculated with them. These results were approximately consistent with our previous results (Kanzaki, N.; Aikawa, T.; Maehara, N.; Ichihara, Y., 2010, J. For. Res.; in press), in which an avirulent isolate (OKD‐1) of B. xylophilus and B. luxuriosae caused water flow inhibition without external symptoms in 3‐year‐old seedlings. Therefore, to examine the pathogenicity of the nematodes to pines, it is useful to use 3‐year‐old seedlings in inoculation experiments when adult trees cannot be used.  相似文献

High-quality wood resource scarcity as well as population growth and demand of wood have encouraged the use of alternative sources of lignocellulosic materials. In this study, the possibility of producing particleboard from waste cotton stalks is evaluated. The effects of the independent variables included weight ratio of melamine-formaldehyde to urea-formaldehyde, shelling ratio and the percentage of cotton stalks to poplar in the core layer were analyzed in the form of response surface methodology based on second-order multiple linear regression model. The results showed that there was perfect agreement between the estimated values and observed data, as with an increase in the ratio of melamine-formaldehyde resin to urea-formaldehyde, shelling ration and amount of poplar in the core layer of panels, modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity and internal bonding increase. The optimal point of use of investigated variables included 18.30% melamine-formaldehyde, 30.35% thickness of the surface layers and 10.70% of poplar in the core layer.  相似文献

Forest ecosystems are our priceless natural resource and are a key component of the global carbon budget. Forest fires can be a hazard to the viability and sustainable management of forests with consequences for natural and cultural environments, economies, and the life quality of local and regional populations. Thus, the selection of strategies to manage forest fires, while considering both functional and economic efficiency, is of primary importance. The use of decision support systems (DSSs) by managers of forest fires has rapidly increased. This has strengthened capacity to prevent and suppress forest fires while protecting human lives and property. DSSs are a tool that can benefit incident management and decision making and policy, especially for emergencies such as natural disasters. In this study we reviewed state-of-the-art DSSs that use: database management systems and mathematical/economic algorithms for spatial optimization of firefighting forces; forest fire simulators and satellite technology for immediate detection and prediction of evolution of forest fires; GIS platforms that incorporate several tools to manipulate, process and analyze geographic data and develop strategic and operational plans.  相似文献

A method and layout of various systems of barriers of pheromone traps is described. The rationale of the method is based on the stress of spruce and the chemical communication ofIps typographus. Various systems of pheromone trap barriers were used according to the required level of protection. The method was used in two areas affected by air pollution and bark beetle outbreak. The first area was in an unnatural spruce monoculture region while the second was in a National Park. The described method led to a significant reduction of bark beetle attacks on trees along forest edges and subsequently to the stopping of movement of the zone of attacked trees due to bark beetle damage. In the case of forest stands with no reduced canopy closure, the reduction of attacks led to a dramatic decline of bark beetle outbreak. On the other hand, this method was not able to reduce the level of bark beetle attack in the interior of forest stands with a decreased level of canopy closure. This method, as part of differentiated pest management measures in one forest district, was successful without any other protection measures in the condition of natural reserves in a spruce vegetation zone.  相似文献

采用竹束单板整张化工艺,制备了竹束单板层积材(BLVL),利用X射线剖面密度仪研究BLVL及重组竹的剖面密度分布规律,比较了BLVL和重组竹的各项力学指标及其均匀性,并对其宽度和厚度方向上的尺寸稳定性和离散性进行了统计分析.结果表明:竹束单板层积材剖面密度曲线(VDP)分布较为均匀,两种整张化方式下制备的BLVL剖面密度变异系数(COV)较重组竹要低.BLVL的静曲强度、弹性模量、剪切强度及力学均匀性均优于重组竹;方差分析表明:BLVL的吸水增重率、宽度和厚度膨胀率显著低于重组竹,其标准方差亦小于重组竹,且TH> Tw.  相似文献

The demand on agriculture to meet food security goals and mitigate environmental impacts requires multifunctional land-use strategies. Considering both farmer motivations and rural development needs, one option is to transition marginal farmland to perennial crops. In this study, we considered the potential for Multifunctional Perennial Cropping Systems (MPCs) that would simultaneously provide production and ecosystem service benefits. We examined adoption potential of MPCs on marginal farmland through an agricultural landowner survey in the Upper Sangamon River Watershed in Illinois, USA. We identified adoption preferences among landowners in conjunction with socio-demographic characteristics that would facilitate targeted implementation. Hierarchical cluster analysis and discriminant analysis identified landowner categories and key factors affecting adoption potential. Landowner age, appreciation for plant diversity, and future farm management involvement were the strongest predictors of potential MPCs adoption. The landowner categories identified within the survey data, supplemented with focus group discussions, suggested a high adoption potential farmer profile as a young, educated landowner with known marginal land they would consider converting to MPCs for improved soil and water quality conservation.  相似文献
