Thurber’s needlegrass (Achnatherum thurberianum [Piper] Barkworth) is an important component of many sagebrush communities in the Intermountain West. Prescribed fall burning is often implemented in sagebrush plant communities to mimic historic wildfires, improve wildlife habitat, and increase livestock forage production. Burning is used because it shifts dominance from sagebrush to herbaceous vegetation. The effects of prescribed fall burning on Thurber’s needlegrass are largely unexplored. The purpose of this study was to determine the response of Thurber’s needlegrass to prescribed fall burning. A randomized block design was used, and each block consisted of a fall burned and unburned (control) Wyoming big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata subsp. wyomingensis [Beetle & A. Young] S. L. Welsh)–bunchgrass communities. Response variables measured in the first and second years after burns were Thurber’s needlegrass community foliar cover and density, vegetative and reproductive biomass, photosynthetic rates, tissue carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) content, and N (15N:14N) and C (13C:12C) isotope ratios. Density of Thurber’s needlegrass in both postburn years and cover in the second postburn year were not different between treatments (P > 0.05), but cover was less in the burned than control treatment in the first postburn year (P = 0.008). Carbon isotope ratios in Thurber’s needlegrass differed between the burn (-25.9 ±  SE) and control (-26.3 ±  SE) treatments in the first postburn year (P = 0.019). Nitrogen isotope ratios indicated nitrogen was more available in the burned than control treatment in both years (P < 0.05). Photosynthetic rates of Thurber’s needlegrass were also generally greater in the burned than control treatment (P = 0.045). Our results suggest burning altered the availability of resources to Thurber’s needlegrass plants. Our results also suggest that prescribed fall burning is not detrimental to Thurber’s needlegrass and, thus, can be used as a method to shift dominance from sagebrush to herbaceous vegetation.  相似文献

Show jumping is one of the most popular equestrian disciplines although strategic jumping per se is seldom used by free-living horses when negotiating obstacles that they might otherwise avoid. To establish if horses are naturally motivated to jump, we examined horses in a free-choice situation when negotiating various obstacles under test conditions. Eighteen leisure horses (LHs) and 16 sport horses (SHs) participated in a number of 2-choice tests. First, horses were presented with 2 optional routes during a “free-choice test” to reach a food stimulus. The choices were a shorter route (over an obstacle) or a longer route (around the obstacle). During 8 consecutive trials, the horses encountered an increase in obstacle height on every second trial as follows: 0, 20, 35, and 50 cm. In the “ridden test” after an initial conditioning period, the horses were tested with a Y-maze formation during 3 consecutive trials, where one element of the maze contained an obstacle arm (OA). The horses walked or trotted over the obstacle most frequently (59.9%) and jumped the obstacle in only 10.7% of the cases. For both the LH and SH groups, the horses' motivation to traverse the obstacle decreased as the obstacle height increased and only 44.1% of horses actually negotiated the 50-cm obstacle as compared with the 20-cm obstacle (85.3%). The LH group preferred to go around the obstacle significantly more often than the SH group (24 trials, 16.7% vs. 9 trials, 7.0%, for SH and LH, respectively; χ2 = 6.81, N = 33, P = 0.0090). The LH group used a jumping strategy to clear the obstacle far less frequently (6 trials, 4.2%) than the SH group (23 trials, 18.0%; χ2 = 9.96, N = 29, P = 0.0023). In the Y-maze trials, the LH group exhibited preference (40 per 54 trials, 74.1%; χ2 = 12.5, P < 0.0001), and the SH group failed to exhibit any preference (20 per 48 trials; χ2 = 1.33, P = 0.3123). There was no evidence of any correlation between the motivation to clear the obstacle and total number of OA choices in either the LH group (rs = 0.13, P = 0.9594) or the SH group (rs = ?0.25, P = 0.3492). The findings from the present study indicate that SHs are motivated and willing to jump obstacles more often than are LHs under similar conditions. However, the apparent reluctance of the horses overall to continue jumping as the obstacle height increases suggests that, in general, many horses could easily encounter excessive demands (overfacing) in sport. This issue should be carefully monitored in terms of equine training, competition, and welfare.  相似文献

Many wild equids are at present endangered in the wild. Concurrently, increased mechanization has pushed back the numbers of some old native horse breeds to levels that are no longer compatible with survival of the breed. Strong concerns arose in the last decade to preserve animal biodiversity, including that of rare horse breeds. Genome Resource Banking refers to the cryostorage of genetic material and is an approach for ex situ conservation, which should be applied in combination with in situ conservation programmes. In this review, we propose that, owing to the great reproductive similarity among the different members of the genus Equus, the domestic horse can be used to optimize cryopreservation and embryo production protocols for future application in wild equids. We will give this hypothesis a scientific underpinning by listing successful applications of epididymal sperm freezing, embryo freezing, intracytoplasmic sperm injection, oocyte vitrification and somatic cell nuclear transfer in domestic horses. Some ART fertilization methods may be performed with semen of very low quality or with oocytes obtained after the death of the mare.  相似文献

Detection of influenza virus in oropharyngeal swabs collected during wild bird surveillance is assumed to represent respiratory infection, although intestine is the main site of infection. We tested this assumption by histological examination of the respiratory tract of wild Mallards with virus-positive oropharyngeal swabs. Thirty-two of 125 Mallards tested had viral-RNA positive oropharyngeal swabs. The respiratory tracts of four Mallards with the most virus were examined in detail by immunohistochemistry. None had detectable virus antigen in the respiratory tract, suggesting it was not infected. An alternative explanation is that the oropharynx was contaminated with virus through feeding in surface water or through preening.  相似文献

Gyrodactylids (Monogenea) are ectoparasites of fish, some of which negatively affect commercially valuable fishes. Temperature strongly regulates population dynamics of these viviparous flatworms in farmed and wild fish populations, with most gyrodactylid species showing positive temperature-abundance associations. In agreement with epidemiological theory, numerous laboratory studies demonstrate that these parasites cannot persist in confined fish populations without periodic introduction of susceptible hosts. Extinction of gyrodactylid populations is due to host immunity, which develops in several fish species. In this one-year study, we followed populations of the recognized pathogen Gyrodactylus cichlidarum infecting four genetic groups of confined tilapia (wild type Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus niloticus, red O. n. niloticus, Mozambique tilapia O. mossambicus and a red synthetic population called Pargo-UNAM) kept under farming conditions and subject to natural environmental fluctuations. Based on the antecedents given, we postulated the following three hypotheses: (1) parasite abundance will be regulated by water temperature; (2) parasites will induce host mortality, particularly during periods of rapid infrapopulation growth; and (3) gyrodactylid populations will eventually become extinct on confined fish hosts. We disproved the three hypotheses: (1) parasite numbers fluctuated independently of temperature but were associated to changes in microhabitat use; (2) although gyrodactylid populations exhibited considerable growth, no evidence was found of negative effects on the hosts; and (3) infections persisted for one year on confined fish. Microhabitat use changed over time, with most worms apparently migrating anteriorly from the caudal fin and ending on the pectoral fins. Gyrodactylid populations followed similar trajectories in all fish, aggregating and dispersing repeatedly. Several instances were found where increased parasite dispersion coincided with increased intensity of infection; as well as the opposite, where increased aggregation coincided with parasite population declines. Three alternative explanations could account for these observations: that parasites (1) experience differential mortality on different anatomical regions of the fish; (2) migrate to avoid intraspecific competition; and (3) migrate to escape localized immune responses induced by infection. Our data do not allow us to demonstrate which of these alternatives is correct, so we discuss the merits of each. We provide circumstantial evidence in support of the third explanation, because as shown in other fish host-gyrodactylid interactions where immune responses have been characterized, in this study worms progressively moved away from fins with high mucus cell density to those with low density - what would be anticipated if immune defenses occur and reach the fish surface through mucus.  相似文献
