A study consisting of two trials was conducted to determine the effects of monensin on the apparent absorption and retention of sodium (Na) and potassium (K) and to examine changes in tissue and ruminal fluid concentrations of these minerals in lambs. Eight lambs (39 kg) were used in trial 1 and 10 lambs (37 kg) were used in trial 2. Animals were used in randomized block designs, blocked by weight, and fed a high concentrate diet with or without 20 mg/kg monensin. Trials began with a dietary adjustment period lasting 18 d in trial 1 and 21 d in trial 2. Animals were then placed in metabolism stalls for a 10-d stall adjustment period followed by a 12-d collection period. Collections for mineral balance were made during the first 10 d of the collection period. Blood and ruminal fluid samples were obtained on d 11 of the collection period. Lambs were slaughtered on d 12 of the collection period and tissue samples were collected. Sodium retention decreased (P less than .05) 86.2% when monensin was fed. Apparent K absorption increased (P less than .05) 16.7%, while K retention increased (P less than .10) 52.6% when monensin was fed. In lambs fed monensin, ileal Na decreased (P less than .10) 13.8%. These results indicate that dietary monensin alters the metabolism of Na and K in lambs.  相似文献

Sixty-four Angus steers initially averaging 354 kg were allotted to a 2 X 2 factorial arrangement of treatments to determine the effects of dietary Ni (0 or 5 mg/kg supplemental), monensin (0 or 33 mg/kg) and their possible interaction on performance, methane production and N metabolism. The basal diet was a high energy, corn-cottonseed hull based diet containing 10.2% crude protein and .30 mg/kg Ni on a dry matter basis. Monensin reduced (P less than .05) feed intake, did not affect average daily gain and improved (P less than .05) feed conversion over the 102-d study. Nickel supplementation did not significantly alter or interact with monensin to affect steer performance. However, steers fed Ni tended to have higher average daily gains and improved feed conversions. Monensin decreased (P less than .05) in vitro methane production, altered several carcass traits, increased (P less than .05) molar proportion of ruminal propionate and decreased (P less than .05) molar proportion of ruminal acetate. Nickel did not alter methane production, carcass characteristics or ruminal volatile fatty acid proportions. Both monensin and Ni increased (P less than .05) ruminal fluid urease activity when samples were obtained before feeding. A significant monensin X Ni interaction was found to affect ruminal epithelial urease activity. Monensin increased ruminal epithelial urease in steers not receiving supplemental Ni, but had no effect on ruminal epithelial urease activity in steers fed supplemental Ni. Ruminal fluid protein and ammonia-N were decreased (P less than .05) by monensin. Results of this study indicate that Ni may interact with monensin to affect ruminal epithelial urease activity but not performance or methane production in finishing steers.  相似文献

Twelve ruminally cannulated lambs (average weight, 31.1 kg) were used to determine the effects of monensin and K on apparent absorption of Mg in lambs. Lambs were assigned randomly to two groups and fed a basal high concentrate diet containing .44% K with or without 20 mg/kg monensin for 19 d of dietary adjustment. During adjustment, lambs were housed by treatment group and given ad libitum access to their diets. Following dietary adjustment, lambs were placed in individual metabolism stalls and fed 450 g of their respective diet twice daily. Within each monensin group, lambs were infused ruminally with 0, 7.6 or 31.6 g K/d (equal amounts at each feeding in 158 ml of distilled-deionized water) during three periods in a 3 X 3 Latin-square arrangement of K treatments. Each period consisted of a 10-d preliminary phase and a 7-d collection phase followed by a 3-d D2O infusion phase to determine water turnover. Addition of monensin to the diet decreased (P less than .05) fecal Mg excretion 15.9%. Apparent absorption and retention of Mg were increased (P less than .05) with the addition of monensin. Increasing K level increased (P less than .05) fecal Mg excretion. Apparent absorption of Mg decreased (P less than .05) from .93 to .80 g/d when either level of K was infused into the rumen. Monensin decreased the acetate:propionate (A:P) ratio. There was a significant interaction between monensin and K level for acetate and propionate (molar %), and A:P ratio. Two comparative slaughter trials and a metabolism trial were conducted. Treatments consisted of: 1) 0 fat, 0 monensin; 2) 4% yellow grease, 0 monensin; 3) 0 fat, 33 mg/kg monensin and 4) 4% yellow grease, 33 mg/kg monensin. Trial 1 involved 104 crossbred beef steers (267 kg) in a 140-d comparative slaughter trial. There were no interactions (P greater than .20) between supplemental fat and monensin on steer performance. Monensin supplementation decreased rate of weight gain (P less than .10) and feed intake (P less than .05) with no effect on energy value of the diet (P greater than .20). Fat supplementation increased (P less than .01) rate of weight gain 12.5% and increased the net energy for maintenance (NEm) and net energy for gain (NEg) value of the diet 8.5 and 9.4%, respectively. Trial 2 involved 154 Holstein steers (290 kg) in a 94-d comparative slaughter trial. There were no interactions between supplemental fat and monensin (P greater than .20). Monensin supplementation did not affect rate or composition of gain (P greater than .20), but supplementation reduced (P less than .05) feed intake and feed required per unit weight gain 3.6%. Fat supplementation increased (P less than .01) fat and energy gain 12.5 and 10.3%, respectively, and the NEm and NEg content of the diet 7.5 and 8.4%, respectively. Trial 3 utilized four crossbred beef steers (220 kg) with cannulas in the rumen, proximal duodenum and distal ileum. There were no interactions between supplemental fat and monensin with respect to site of digestion (P greater than .20). Supplemental fat did not affect (P greater than .20) organic matter, starch, fiber or N digestion. Intestinal digestibility of fat averaged 77.3%. Monensin increased (P less than .10) intestinal digestibility of fat 7.4%. There were negative associative effects between supplemental fat and monensin on ruminal acetate:propionate ratios and estimated methane production. It was concluded that the feeding value of feed fat is underestimated in tables of feed standards currently in use, and that the net effects of monensin on these estimates are additive.  相似文献

Studies were conducted to determine the effects of lysocellin and monensin on mineral metabolism of steers fed forage-based diets. In each study treatments consisted of 1) control, 2) 100 mg lysocellin/d, 3) 200 mg lysocellin/d and 4) 200 mg monensin/d. Twenty-four growing Hereford steers were used in each of two experiments to evaluate the effects of ionophore feeding on plasma and ruminal soluble mineral concentrations. Steers were fed individually greenchop (tall fescue and bermudagrass) ad libitum and .91 kg/d of a corn-trace mineral salt-ionophore supplement. Plasma and ruminal fluid samples were obtained on d 28 and 84 in both studies. Ruminal concentrations of soluble phosphorus (P) and iron (Fe) were higher (P less than .05), whereas soluble manganese (Mn) was lower (P less than .01), in steers fed lysocellin than in controls. Steers fed lysocellin had higher (P less than .05) plasma magnesium (Mg) concentrations than control steers. Plasma and ruminal soluble mineral concentrations generally were similar for the monensin and 200 mg lysocellin treatments. Two additional studies were conducted to determine the effects of lysocellin and monensin on macromineral apparent absorption and retention in steers fed tall fescue greenchop. Steers were adjusted to their diets for 28 d and then placed in metabolism crates for a 6-d acclimation followed by a 5-d collection of urine and feces. Percent apparent absorption of calcium (Ca), potassium (K), Mg and P was higher (P less than .05), whereas sodium (Na) absorption was lower (P less than .05), in steers fed lysocellin than in controls. Mineral absorption was similar in steers fed 200 mg lysocellin or monensin. Calcium (P less than .05) and K (P less than .10) retention (percent of intake) was increased by ionophore feeding. Results indicate that lysocellin and monensin alter apparent absorption and retention of certain minerals in steers fed forage-based diets.  相似文献

Sheep were used to determine the effects of dietary supplementation with readily-fermentable carbohydrates on Mg, Ca, K and P utilization. In each of two metabolism trials, 15 mature, crossbred wethers (average weight, 49.2 kg) were allotted to five dietary treatments consisting of 800 g/d of orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata, L.) hay alone, or supplemented with 450 g/d of either glucose, sucrose, lactose or starch. Each trial consisted of a 5-d adjustment period, a 10-d preliminary period and a 10-d collection period. Compared with wethers fed hay alone, supplementation with each kind of carbohydrate to the diet decreased (P less than .05) fecal Mg excretion and increased (P less than .05) apparent absorption and retention of Mg. Apparent absorption of the Ca was lower (P less than .05) in wethers fed lactose and tended to be decreased by glucose, sucrose and starch supplementation. Calcium retention was lower (P less than .05) in wethers fed sucrose and lactose, compared with those fed hay alone. All types of supplementary carbohydrates depressed (P less than .05) apparent absorption and urinary excretion of K. Serum Mg and Ca were not affected and serum K was depressed (P less than .05) by carbohydrate supplementation. Ruminal fluid pH was decreased (P less than .05) by glucose and lactose supplementation, and addition of these carbohydrates tended to decrease molar proportions of acetate and increase those of propionate and butyrate, compared with sheep fed hay alone. Metabolism and growth experiments were conducted to determine the effects of lysocellin and calcium level on mineral metabolism and performance of beef steers. Lysocellin at 0 or 22 mg/kg and Ca at .3 or .6% of the diet were fed in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. Two steers averaging 287 kg BW were fed each diet consisting of 80% corn silage and 20% supplement (DM basis) in each of two metabolism trials. Steers were fed the diets for a 21-d preliminary period, followed by 7 d of total feces and urine collection. A lysocellin x Ca interaction was observed for nitrogen retention (P less than .01). Steers fed lysocellin and .6% Ca retained the most N (15.6 g/d), whereas steers receiving lysocellin and .3% Ca retained the least N (8.8 g/d). Lysocellin increased (P less than .05) apparent absorption of Mg. In one of the two metabolism trials, lysocellin increased (P less than .05) apparent absorption and retention of Ca. Apparent absorption and retention of Ca were higher (P less than .05) in steers fed .6% Ca when expressed as grams per day, but absorption and retention were lower (P less than .01) when expressed as a percentage of intake. In the other metabolism trial, the .6% Ca level decreased (P less than .05) urinary P excretion and increased (P less than .05) P retention as a percentage of absorbed P. In a growth experiment, 64 steers were fed similar levels of lysocellin and Ca for 119 d. Diets consisted of 90% corn silage and 10% supplement. Although no treatment effects on ADG, DMI or feed:gain were detected, lysocellin did affect concentration of several minerals in ruminal fluid and blood plasma.  相似文献

Two digestion and metabolism experiments were conducted to determine effects of monensin in low-protein diets. Monensin supplementation (27 mg/kg of diet dry matter) of steers (303 kg) fed 8.7% crude protein increased (P less than .01) apparent N digestibility and N retention and decreased (P less than .01) percentage of N apparently absorbed lost in urine. Apparent digestibilities of dry matter, gross energy and acid detergent lignin were increased (P less than .05). Digestibilities of neutral detergent and acid detergent fibers were not affected by monensin. In growing wether goats (15 kg) fed 8.5% crude protein, monensin (23 mg/kg of diet dry matter) improved (P less than .01) apparent N digestibility and apparent N absorption. However, urinary N excretion also increased (P less than .05), resulting in no difference in N retention. Monensin did not affect digestibilities of dry matter or gross energy. Efficiency of feed conversion and average daily gain were improved with monensin supplementation of growing goats fed a low-protein, high-roughage diet. Monensin resulted in typical shift of acetate-to-propionate ratio in both experiments. Results suggest that improved N utilization may account for some benefits of feeding monensin.  相似文献

Two hundred eighty-eight beef steers (British x Continental x Brahman) were fed a 90% concentrate diet containing either no ionophore (control), laidlomycin propionate at either 6 or 12 mg/kg of dietary DM, or monensin plus tylosin (31 and 12 mg/kg of DM, respectively). Neither of the two levels of laidlomycin propionate nor monensin plus tylosin affected (P greater than .10) ADG or feed:gain ratio. Monensin plus tylosin reduced (P less than .01) daily DMI for the 161-d trial period compared with the other three treatments. Laidlomycin propionate at 6 mg/kg increased (P less than .05) DMI relative to the control, laidlomycin propionate at 12 mg/kg, and monensin plus tylosin diets during the 2nd wk of the trial and from d 57 to 84. Treatments did not affect carcass measurements. In a second experiment, 12 ruminally cannulated steers were fed diets containing no ionophore or laidlomycin propionate at either 6 or 12 mg/kg of DM. Samples were obtained for two consecutive days while the dietary concentrate level was 75%, after which the diet was switched abruptly to 90% concentrate, and samples were collected on several days during a 21-d period. The rate at which steers consumed their daily allotment of feed was not altered markedly by laidlomycin propionate. Likewise, laidlomycin propionate did not affect total ruminal VFA concentrations or proportions. Two experiments were conducted with lambs fed concentrate-based diets to study the effects of dietary P and soil ingestion on performance, P utilization and mineral composition of serum and alimentary tract contents. In Exp. 1, 20 wether lambs were fed diets for 21 d in a 2 X 2 factorial arrangement of treatments with .2 or .3% total dietary P and O or 9% added Florida Ultisol (highly weathered soil with high P-fixation capacity) containing 4,600 and 6,400 mg/kg total Al and Fe, respectively. True P absorption increased (P less than .05) from 30 to 42% and from 37 to 54% when soil was added to the basal and high P diets, respectively. In Exp. 2, 24 wether lambs were assigned randomly to a 2 X 2 X 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. Lambs were fed during a 70-d period using diets described previously on either a restricted or an ad libitum basis. Soil increased Fe concentration in ruminal fluid (P less than .05) and ash percentage (P less than .001) in ruminal solids and feces. Aluminum concentration in ruminal solids and feces and Fe in ruminal solids were increased (P less than .001) by soil addition, whereas concentrations of Ca, Mg, P, Zn, Cu and Mn in ruminal solids and feces were decreased (P less than .01) by soil addition. There were time X P interactions on serum inorganic P (P less than .01) and Mg (P less than .05) concentrations. Although high in P-fixing capacity, soil fed to lambs in these experiments improved P utilization. Lambs appeared to be able to adapt to changes in intake of dietary minerals in soil, possibly through adaptation of ruminal microflora or a redistribution of body mineral pools.  相似文献

Eight crossbred steers (avg wt, 350 kg) with duodenal and ileal cannulas were used in two experimental periods in a single-reversal design to determine the effects of monensin on site and extent of apparent absorption of Mg and Ca. Steers were fed a cottonseed hull:concentrate diet (30:70) with or without 25 mg monensin/kg. The diet contained .20% Mg and .38% Ca. Each diet contained .25% Cr2O3 as a digesta marker. During each period, steers were fed the control diet for 10 d before allotment to treatments. Each period consisted of 17 d for diet adjustment and 6 d for collection. During the collection phase, fecal samples were obtained beginning on d 1 and continuing through d 6 at 12-h intervals progressing 2 h each day. Apparent Mg availability (grams apparently absorbed expressed as a percentage of grams of intake) increased (P less than .05) from 18.4 to 32.5% when monensin was fed. Feeding monensin increased (P less than .05) the apparent Mg availability and amount of Mg absorbed in the preintestinal region (47.7 vs 29.8% and 8.5 vs 5.1 g/d, respectively). Larger quantities (P less than .05) of Mg were secreted into the small intestine when monensin was fed. Monensin did not alter (P less than .05) apparent Ca availability or absorption in any segment of the digestive tract. These data indicate that monensin increased Mg and did not change Ca availability in the preintestinal region.  相似文献

Forty-eight Angus and Hereford cows were used in a completely random design with a 2 X 2 factorial arrangement of treatments to evaluate the effects of monensin and two sources of Mg on performance, ruminal characteristics and mineral status of mature beef cows. Cows were fed wheat straw treated with NH3 during late gestation and straw treated with NH3 plus bromegrass haylage after calving along with a protein supplement that contained either MgO (7.5 g/kg) or MgSO4 (11 g/kg). One half of the cows received monensin (1 g/kg) in their protein supplement. During the precalving period, MgO without monensin increased (P less than .01) plasma Mg compared with Mg in plasma of cows receiving MgSO4 or MgO with monensin. Magnesium oxide also increased cow weight gains during late gestation (P less than .05) compared with weight gains of cows supplemented with MgSO4, but magnesium source had no effect on weight gain postcalving. Plasma glucose was increased by monensin (P less than .05) and by MgSO4 (P less than .01) during early lactation. Monensin increased the proportion of propionate before (P less than .05) and after (P less than .10) calving in the ruminal fluid of cows. Monensin also increased (P less than .05) cow weight gain precalving and tended to decrease (P less than .10) milk fat in lactating cows. Calf weight gains were not affected by treatment of dam. Magnesium oxide appeared to have higher Mg bioavailability than MgSO4 for cows precalving, but Mg bioavailability was not different postcalving. Monensin increased cow weight gains precalving and improved feed efficiency postcalving.  相似文献

Two trials evaluated the effects of a monensin ruminal delivery device (MRDD) on steers grazing winter wheat pasture. In Trial 1, 60 Hereford steers (initial wt 238.5 kg) grazed a 21.9-ha paddock of Vona-variety winter wheat for 112 d. Steers were assigned to either MRDD or control (C) treatments in a randomized complete block design. In Trial 2, eight ruminally cannulated steers (avg wt 234.4 kg) grazed a 2.4-ha paddock of Vona-variety wheat and were assigned randomly to either MRDD or C treatments. Three 11-d collection periods were conducted during early February, early March and early April. Chromic oxide was dosed to determine fecal output, and ruminal samples were collected on d 6 of each period. Nylon bags containing ground wheat forage were incubated ruminally beginning on d 8. In Trial 1, steers with MRDD tended (P less than .11) to gain more weight than C steers (.44 vs .38 kg/d). In Trial 2, wheat forage intake, in situ DM disappearance, ruminal pH, ruminal ammonia concentrations and ruminal proportions of acetate and total VFA concentrations were not affected by treatment. Ruminal proportions of propionate were increased (P less than .05) slightly by MRDD (20.3 and 19.2 mol/100 mol for MRDD and C, respectively). Butyrate proportions in ruminal samples were decreased (P less than .05) by MRDD during March but not in other sampling periods. Ruminal fluid chlorophyll concentration was less (P less than .05) for MRDD-treated vs C steers during early March but was greater (P less than .10) for MRDD-treated steers during early April. The MRDD shows promise as a method of supplying monensin to cattle grazing winter wheat forage.  相似文献

Monensin in ruminant diets increases production of propionic acid. We have tested the hypothesis that propionic acid may be elevated to such an extent by monensin that it cannot be optimally metabolized by the methyl malonyl-CoA pathway requiring vitamin B12 (B12) in the liver. Thus, the effects of weekly B12 injections (10 mg X head-1 X wk-1, intramuscularly) with and without dietary monensin (25 mg/kg diet) on average daily gain (ADG), dry matter intake (DMI), feed to gain ration (F/G), liver and serum B12 concentrations and liver activity of propionate metabolizing enzymes were examined in an 84-d trial. Sixteen lambs (27.5 kg average initial wt) were assigned randomly to one of four treatments in a factorial arrangement: monensin plus B12, monensin without B12, no monensin plus B12 and no monensin without B12. Lambs were fed an 80% concentrate diet and slaughtered at the end of the trial. Liver samples were obtained by biopsy on d 0 and at slaughter on d 84 to determine activity of propionate metabolizing enzymes and B12 concentrations. Serum samples were taken on d 0, 28, 56 and 84 to determine serum B12 concentration. Neither monensin nor B12 affected (P greater than .10) ADG, DMI or F/G. Lambs receiving B12 had higher (P less than .01) serum B12 concentrations, but this was not reflected (P greater than .10) in higher liver B12 concentrations. No difference (P greater than .10) in liver propionate metabolizing activity among treatments was detected; however, monensin decreased (P less than .05) fumarate and malate formation by liver homogenates. Liver B12 concentrations were highly correlated with endogenous propionate metabolizing activity at d 0 (r = .73, P less than .01) and d 84 (r = .51, P less than .05). Results suggest no advantage to providing supplemental B12 to lambs fed monensin-supplemented, high-concentrate diets.  相似文献

Four Suffolk x Hampshire wether lambs averaging 55 kg with permanent ruminal cannulas were used in a 4 x 4 Latin square design to determine the effects of exchange of ruminal contents between fed and fasted lambs on subsequent DMI and ruminal characteristics. Lambs were fed a pelleted 70% roughage diet at 2% of BW for 17 d. During each period of the Latin square two lambs were deprived of feed and water for 3 d. At the end of the fasting period ruminal contents from one fed and one fasted lamb were exchanged. Lambs were then given ad libitum access to feed for 8 d, during which DMI, feeding pattern, and ruminal characteristics were monitored. Measurements of ruminal volume determined by total collection and indigestible marker (lithium sulfate) suggested that only about 50% of total ruminal contents were actually exchanged. Fasted lambs had lower (P less than .05) DMI, ruminal fermentative capacity, ruminal DM weight, and ruminal DM percentage than fed lambs during the first 4 d of realimentation. Exchange of ruminal contents did not (P greater than .10) affect DMI, feeding pattern, ruminal fluid pH, ruminal fermentative capacity, ruminal contents DM percentage, ruminal nucleic acid concentration, or VFA. Dosing fasted lambs with ruminal contents from nonfasted lambs reduced (P less than .05) ruminal liquid volume, dry weight of ruminal contents, and propionate concentration. Results of this trial are interpreted to indicate that although decreased ruminal function is a factor in the low feed intakes of fasted ruminants, the possibility of increasing postfast feed intake via improved ruminal function is limited because other metabolic factors may play a more important role.  相似文献

Studies were conducted to determine the effects of lysocellin on growth performance and metabolism of steers fed forage-based diets. Treatments in all experiments consisted of 1) control, 2) 100 mg lysocellin/d, 3) 200 mg lysocellin/d and 4) 200 mg monensin/d. In each of two 90-d performance studies, 24 Hereford steers were individually fed greenchop (fungus-free tall fescue and Coastal and Tifton-44 bermudagrass) ad libitum and .91 kg/d of a corn-trace mineral salt supplement. In Exp. 1, tall fescue was fed from d 1 to 45 and bermudagrass from d 46 to 90. Bermudagrass was offered during d 1 to 45 and tall fescue during d 46 to 90 in Exp. 2. Lysocellin improved gain (Exp. 1, P less than .01) and feed conversion (Exp. 1 and 2 combined, P less than .05), decreased total VFA concentrations (P less than .05), increased molar proportions of propionate, isobutyrate and isovalerate (P less than .01), decreased molar proportions of acetate and butyrate (P less than .01) and lowered acetate:propionate (P less than .01). Two metabolism studies involving a total of 16 Hereford steers were conducted. Steers were fed tall fescue greenchop and .91 kg/d supplement for a 34-d adjustment period followed by a 5-d total collection period. Lysocellin increased N digestibility (P less than .01) and N retention (P less than .06) but did not (P greater than .05) affect DM, NDF or ADF digestibility. Data indicate that lysocellin results in major alterations in ruminal fermentation and can increase growth performance and N retention in steers fed forage-based diets.  相似文献

Studies were conducted to evaluate zinc methionine (ZnMet) as a source of Zn for ruminants. Experiment 1 compared the availability of Zn in ZnMet and zinc oxide (ZnO) in lambs fed a semi-purified diet deficient in Zn. Based on growth rate and animal performance, plasma Zn and plasma alkaline phosphatase activity, no differences in Zn availability were detected between the two Zn sources. Apparent absorption of Zn also was similar, but Zn retention was higher (P less than .01) in lambs fed ZnMet because of a tendency for lower urinary Zn excretion (P less than .19) in this group. Zinc absorption and retention by lambs were similar for the two Zn sources in Exp. 2 when 20 mg Zn/kg was added to an orchardgrass hay-based diet containing 30 mg Zn/kg. In Exp. 3, lambs were dosed orally with 300 mg of Zn as ZnO or ZnMet, and the increase in plasma Zn following dosing was monitored. The increase in plasma Zn above predosing values was similar at 6 h but was higher at 12 (P less than .10) and 24 h (P less than .05) postdosing in lambs given ZnMet. Thirty-six Hereford x Simmental heifers (271 kg) were used in Exp. 4 to determine the influence of supplementing Zn (25 mg/kg) as ZnO or ZnMet of growth performance and Zn status. Heifers were fed a corn silage-based diet that contained 23.1 mg Zn/kg during the 126-d study. A 60-d trial was conducted to determine effects of Al citrate and citric acid on DM digestibility (DMD) and metabolism of Mg, Ca, P, K, Na and Al. Eighteen crossbred, yearling wether lambs equipped with ruminal cannulas were fed a basal diet containing .12% Mg and 2.87% K (DM basis) and were allotted to three treatments: 1) control, 2) 2,000 ppm Al as Al citrate and 3) citric acid equivalent to the citrate in treatment 2. Treatments were administered in 200 ml of deionized water twice daily in divided doses via ruminal cannula. Balance trials were conducted during d 0 to 5, 6 to 10, 25 to 35 and 50 to 60. Dry matter digestibility decreased (P less than .05) approximately 3 percentage units in lambs receiving Al. Treatment with Al citrate increased (P less than .01) apparent absorption and retention of Al compared to those receiving citric acid alone. Approximately 30% of ingested and infused Al was apparently absorbed. Compared to citric acid, Al citrate treatment lowered apparent absorption and retention of Mg and Ca during d 0 to 5. Apparent Ca absorption and retention again were lowered during d 50 to 60. Urinary Ca was increased (P less than .01) and apparent P absorption (P less than .10) and retention (P less than .05) were decreased by Al citrate during all measurement periods. Apparent absorption of K decreased (P less than .05) slightly in response to Al treatment. Apparent absorption of Na was not influenced by Al treatment. Serum Mg and P decreased and serum Ca increased in response to Al treatment. Results demonstrate negative effects of ingested Al, but not of citric acid, on DMD and metabolism of Mg, Ca, P and K.  相似文献

Three 10-d collection periods (April 4 to 14, early April, EApr; April 23 to May 3, late April, LApr; May 10 to 20, 1984, mid-May, MMay) were conducted to evaluate effects of no supplement (C), .5 kg-head-1.d-1 (as-fed basis) supplemental grain (steam-flaked milo, G) or G plus 170 mg monensin.head-1.d-1 (M) on forage intake and digestion by 12 ruminally cannulated beef steers (four/treatment; avg initially BW = 393 kg) grazing irrigated winter wheat pasture. Ruminal pH was greater (P less than .01) for M than for C or G during EApr but was not altered by treatments in LApr or MMay. Compared with C, ruminal NH3 was decreased (P less than .10) by G and M (5 h after supplementation) in EApr, decreased (P less than .05) by G (2h) and increased (P less than .05) by M (8 h) in LApr and decreased (P less than .10) by G (-1h) in MMay. Treatments had little influence on total VFA concentrations or on molar proportions of acetate and propionate. Butyrate molar proportion was decreased (P less than .10) by M during EApr and LApr, but not during MMay. Monensin increased (P less than .05) fluid passage rate compared with C and G in EApr but not in other periods, Particulate passage measurements did not differ (P greater than .10) among treatments within periods. Forage DM intake was not influenced (P greater than .10) by supplementation during any period. Extent of in situ forage DM disappearance was greater (P less than .10) for M than for C or G during EApr (12 and 30 h of incubation) but was not different (P greater than .10) in LApr or MMay. Incidence of frothy bloat was decreased (P less than .05) by M during EApr; this reduction may have been related to effects of M on ruminal pH, forage digestion and fluid passage.  相似文献

Thirty-two mature, pregnant beef cows (avg age 8 yr, body wt 550 kg) grazing oat pastures were used to determine the effects of lasalocid on serum mineral and ruminal fluid volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentrations. Cows were blocked by breed type and assigned randomly to eight, 2-ha pastures containing oat forage from December 17, 1985 to May 6, 1986. The cows were fed .25 kg of ground corn with or without 200 mg of lasalocid daily. Based upon analyses of forage mineral composition (.53, .25, .14, .3 and 2.5% of dry matter for Ca, P, Mg, Na and K, respectively), all macrominerals except Mg were in sufficient quantities to meet the requirement for lactating cows. Lasalocid supplementation did not affect serum Mg, K or Zn concentrations (P greater than .05). During the April sampling, serum Ca was higher (P less than .05) and serum Na was lower (P less than .05) in cows supplemented with lasalocid compared with controls. The molar proportion of acetate was decreased (P less than .05) in ruminal fluid of cows fed lasalocid by d 56 (February 11); the molar proportions of acetate and butyrate were decreased (P less than .05), which decreased (P less than .05) the acetate: propionate ratio by d 84 (March 11) of supplementation. This study suggests that lasalocid is effective in altering ruminal VFA and serum mineral concentrations in cows grazing small grain forages.  相似文献
