In honeybee, Apis mellifera, colonies infested with larval and adult small hive beetles (SHB), hive material, and in particular honey, tends to ferment,
probably due to SHB-associated yeasts such as the predominant Kodamaea ohmeri. Here, we test the effects of organic acids on K. ohmeri and on SHB-infested honey/pollen combs. Organic acids were applied at standard concentrations used by beekeepers to control
other pests. In laboratory tests, the growth of K. ohmeri was significantly inhibited by lactic, formic and acetic acids. Treatments of SHB-infested honey/pollen combs (N = 18 colonies) with acetic acid significantly increased mortality of adult SHB and treatments with formic acid significantly
reduced larval infestation. Our data suggest that treatment of honeybee colonies and storage rooms with organic acids could
also help in reducing SHB damage. 相似文献

Bacillus thuringiensis is a major microbial insecticide and a source of genes encoding several proteins toxic to insects. In this paper the authors
give a brief summary ofBacillus thuringiensis used on the integrated pest management in forestry. The derivatives of Bt strain HD1 subspkurstaki have been widely used to control the forest pests such as the gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar), spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana), the pine processionary moth (Thaumetopoea pityocampa), the European pine shoot moth (Rhyacionia buoliana) and the nun moth (Lymantria monacha). Some progresses of transferring and expressing Bt toxin gene in forest trees are offered with a discussion on the limits
and future prospects of using Bt products in forestry.

The efficacy of bottom board traps and CheckMite + strips using Coumaphos, for small hive beetle (SHB) diagnosis and control
was studied in Australia. Colonies in three apiaries (N = 10 each) were surveyed for SHB. In two apiaries, colonies received bottom board traps (cardboard or plastic) with CheckMite + strips
and in the control apiary, traps without strips. After 5 days, all colonies were surveyed again, killed and dissected to quantify
non-detected SHB. Significant differences in the number of live SHB were found between apiaries after treatment, supporting
the fact that Coumaphos traps are efficient (trap mortality: 94.73 ± 0.06% cardboard and 99.53 ± 0.01% plastic). However,
mortality assessment at the colony level (53.29 ± 31.30%), showed that only a limited SHB proportion was affected. Post mortem
colony inspections revealed that 14.06 ± 10.53% SHB were undetected, which should be considered for quantitative diagnosis.
Bottom board traps provided a first estimate of infestation levels (43.03 ± 27.02%). 相似文献

Agricultural productivity may be raised in a sustainable way by many different technologies such as biological fertilizers,
soil and water conservation, biodiversity conservation, improved pest control, and changes in land ownership and distribution.
Of these measures, biotechnology applications probably hold the most promise in augmenting conventional agricultural productivity,
because biotechnology applications give not only the need to increase production, but also protect the environment and conserving
natural resources for future generations. Biotechnology applications will have the possibilities to increase productivity
and food availability through better agronomic performance of new varieties, including resistance to pests; rapid multiplication
of disease-free plants; ability to obtain natural plant products using tissue culture; diagnosis of diseases of plants and
livestock; manipulation of reproduction methods increasing the efficiency of breeding; and the provision of incentives for
greater participation by the private sector through investments. Insect resistance through the transfer of a gene for resistance
fromBacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is one of the most advanced biotechnology applications already being commercialized in many parts of the world. This paper
reviews the development and the status ofBt technology and application ofBt transgenic plants in current agriculture, and discusses specific issues related to the transfer of the technology to the
future of genetic engineered trees with emphasis on conifers.

The sesbania beetle, Mesoplatys ochroptera Stål (Chrysomelidae: Coleoptera), is a serious defoliator of Sesbania sesban in eastern and southern Africa. Developing integrated pest management practices against the beetle is an important aspect of the adoption of S. sesban as an improved fallow species. Field studies were conducted in eastern Zambia with the objective of determining the incidence of M. ochroptera on S. sesban in pure and mixed species fallows. M. ochroptera did not successfully feed or breed on species other than S. sesban either in the pure or mixed species fallows. The density of adult and immature stages of M. ochroptera was higher in mixtures of S. sesban with Mucuna pruriens, Macrotyloma axillare, Macroptilium atropurpureum or Crotalaria grahamiana compared to a pure S. sesban fallow. Although mixed fallows of S. sesban with M. axillare and M. pruriens may produce fodder, increase the amount and quality of organic inputs and improve nutrient cycling in the soil, they appear to be incompatible with management of M. ochroptera. Mixing S. sesban with G. sepium neither increased larval and adult populations of M. ochroptera feeding on S. sesban nor damage to it. While this mixture appeared to favour development of pupae to the adult stage, it increased mortality of emerging adults. Therefore, it is concluded that mixing S. sesban with G. sepium is more robust in nutrient cycling, improving resource utilisation and management of M. ochroptera on S. sesban. This revised version was published online in November 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date. 相似文献

To provide evidence for the aggregation ofPlatypus quercivorus (Murayama) (Coleoptera: Platypodidae) in association with the mass mortality of oak trees in Japan, we compared the number
of beetles attracted to oak logs bored by males with the number of beetles attracted to logs that had not been bored. Large
numbers of males and females were attracted to the bored logs, and the total numbers increased as the number of entry holes
in the logs increased. This result shows that both male and female beetles aggregate on logs bored by the males. We collected
a large number of beetles attracted to living trees bored by the beetles, and the total number of beetles collected increased
as the number of entry holes/m2 on the tree trunk increased. Beetles also aggregated on living trees bored by the males. 相似文献

The Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say.) (CPB) is the main potato pest in Croatia. The main problems in CPB control are related to a number of treatments and resistance development. In order to investigate the efficacy of combinations a reduced dose of spinosad (33% of the full doses) with the reduced doses (33% of full doses) of B.t.t., neem and pyrethrin against CPB larvae, 3-year field trials and one laboratory trial were conducted. Joint actions of the insecticides in combinations were analyzed. The CPB attack on experimental fields in all 3 years of investigation was high to moderate. In 2001 the maximum number of larvae on untreated plots was 11.7 larvae per plant, while in 2002 and 2003 it was lower, 5.5 and 6.1 larvae/plant, respectively. The efficacy obtained with a full dose of B.t.t. reached 75% in the field, and 78% in the laboratory trial. The residual efficacy of a full dose of B.t.t. lasted 7–10 days. The application of both, full and reduced doses of B.t.t., did not result in a significant yield increase. The results indicate that only one treatment with B.t.t. insecticide alone is not enough for efficient protection of potato against the attack of CPB larvae. The application of neem resulted in an efficacy of between 54 and 87.9%. The residual activity of neem was too short to ensure significant yield increase in 2 out of 3 years of the investigation. The application of a full dose of pyrethrin ensured an efficacy of between 86 and 89% with residual activity of 7–10 days. Only in the trial in 2003 significant yield increase (40% higher than untreated control) after the application of a full dose of pyrethin was recorded. The application of both, full and reduced doses of spinosad resulted in very high efficacy (over 90%), with residual activity between 10 and 20 days. The application of spinosad resulted in a significant yield increase in 2003, both in full and reduced doses, and in 2001 in the full dose (the reduced dose was not tested alone in 2001). High efficacy of the reduced dose of spinosad indicated its high biological activity and possibility for the reduction of the recommended dose. However, applications of combinations of insecticides in reduced doses (spinosad with B.t.t., neem and pyrethrin) resulted in efficacies of over 97% with residual activity of up to 21 days. Significant yield increase was noted after the application of the combinations of spinosad with B.t.t. and pyrethrin. The results of the laboratory trial confirmed the results of field trials. The joint action of insecticides was mainly described as independent synergism. It can be concluded that applied combinations are suitable in IPM in potato. 相似文献

The spatial distribution patterns of the attack on fresh logs ofPasania edulis was studied for the oak borer,Platypus quercivorus (Murayama), and two species of Scolytid ambrosia beetles,Xylosandrus crassiusculus (Motschulsky) andXyleborus attenuatus Blanford, in 1994 and 1995. On the logs where onlyP. quercivorus attacked, the entry holes were distributed uniformly when attack intensity was low. However, the distribution pattern became
more aggregated with the increase in attack intensity. On logs where bothP. quercivorus and the two Scolytid species attacked, there was a negative association between the spatial distribution of the entry holes
ofP. quercivorus and that of scolytids. Simultaneous attack of two scolytids also increased the degree of aggregation of the entry holes ofP. quercivorus. The entry holes of scolytids were distributed in groups irrespective of the attack intensity of scolytids andP. quercivorus. These results suggest an asymmetrical interspecific relationship betweenP. quercivorus and scolytids. Concentration of the entry holes ofP. quercivorus in a small area may cause a considerable decline in the reproductive success in the galleries constructed there. 相似文献

This study examined the frequency of infection by an unidentified pathogenic fungus of oak logs bored into by males alone
or by both males and females ofPlatypus quercivorus (Murayama) in the field. The fungus, which is associated with mass mortality of oak trees in Japan, was not isolated from
logs bored into by males alone, which bored only short entrance galleries. However, it was isolated from logs bored into by
both males and females, which together bored longer galleries and reproduced successfully. This suggests that it is difficult
for the fungus to colonize logs bored into by males alone. The fungus was not isolated from a log in which the beetles failed
to reproduce, and in which the galleries were significantly shorter than in logs where reproduction succeeded, but it was
unclear whether the shortness of the galleries prevented colonization of the log by the fungus. The study also revealed that
some gallery-initiating males survived for at least 2 months in the absence of females, and that females elongated entrance
galleries that had been bored by the gallery-initiating males. 相似文献

In Belgium, the current distribution and abundance of Xylosandrus germanus (Coleoptera, Scolytidae), a relatively new species to the Belgian fauna, is poorly known. Therefore, data on the range and population levels of this ambrosia beetle, on a regional and local scale respectively, are presented. Based on those results, the beetles range is discussed. Among the analysed biotic and abiotic factors that could influence the species settlement and population levels, climatic ones, and temperature in particular, seem to exert a crucial influence. 相似文献

In this study, the pathogen and parasite spectra of Turkish populations of the great spruce bark beetle Dendroctonus micans (Kugelann) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae, Scolytinae) are analysed. In addition to the previously studied infective green alga
Helicosporidium, three more pathogens and parasites, i.e. the yeast Metschnikowia sp., the neogregarine Mattesia sp. and a nematode, were recorded here for the first time. The pathogens and parasites occur in different quantities and
combinations in outbreaks of the beetle at five Turkish localities. 相似文献

The sugar beet weevil, Bothynoderes punctiventris Germ. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is one of the most damaging pests of sugar beets in Turkey and has been traditionally
controlled by application of large amounts of insecticides. The current study used laboratory microcosms to evaluate the possibility
of using entomopathogenic nematodes as an alternative control method. The nematodes Steinernema feltiae (strain TUR-S3), Steinernema weiseri (BEY) and Heterorhabditis bacteriophora (TUR-H2) had previously been isolated from Turkey. Nematode-induced mortality generally increased as soil temperature increased
from 15 to 25°C but decreased when larvae were located deeper in soil. Heterorhabditis bacteriophora caused the highest larval mortality at 25°C at all depths (5–20 cm). Steinernema feltiae and S. weiseri were more effective than H. bacteriophora at 15°C at all depths. Increasing the application rate of infective nematode dauer juveniles (DJs) affected the number of
DJs that penetrated each insect larva and the number of DJs produced per insect. The highest production of DJs per larva occurred
at application rates of 50 DJs/larva for S. feltiae and S. weiseri and 100 DJs/larva for H. bacteriophora. Reproduction decreased again at higher application rates. Heterorhabditis bacteriophora had the highest reproductive capability. The results indicate that S. feltiae and S. weiseri might be more effective against this pest early in the growing season when soil temperature is low and that H. bacteriophora might be more effective later in the season when temperature increases. 相似文献

The wood boring weevil, Pentarthrum huttoni Wollaston, is reported for the first time from Austria. It was recorded from coffins in the crypt of St. Michael’s church
in the centre of Vienna. Extensive tunnelling of the larvae and surface damage by the adults caused disintegration of the
historically significant wooden 18th century coffins. Beetles were also detected in rotten cardboard on the loamy soil of the crypt. Infestation by this Cossonine
weevil is promoted by the very damp conditions in the crypt, a consequence of the closure of ventilation funnels in the 1940s. 相似文献

The major bioecological characteristics of Bracon intercessor Nees (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), a parasitoid of the poplar clearwing moth, Paranthrene tabaniformis (Rott.) (Lepidoptera: Sesiidae), were studied from 1987 to 2003. Poplar shoots infested with P. tabaniformis larvae were collected in 11 localities in Bulgaria and examined in the laboratory, and infestations were also studied in the field. B. intercessor was recorded in seven localities and was found to be a gregarious external larval parasitoid of P. tabaniformis. Two generations of the parasitoid developed on the host. The first (summer) generation was associated with early and mid-stage (up to third instar) host larvae, and the second (overwintering) generation with third- to fifth-instar larvae. The average number of parasitoid individuals feeding on a host was 4.5 and 12.4 in summer and overwintering generations, respectively. The maximum number recorded was 25 individuals per host in the overwintering generation. B. intercessor overwintered as a mature larva on the host and completed its development in early spring. The adults from the overwintering generation appeared in April, about 1 month prior to emergence of P. tabaniformis. The life cycle of B. intercessor was not in close synchrony with the development of P. tabaniformis in the spring, but the parasitoid adults which fed on honey-sugar solution lived for up to 31 days (males) and 86 days (females), respectively. This suggests that, in the field, B. intercessor females eclosing in the spring could survive until the host larvae appear if nectar is available. Adults of the summer generation emerge from July to September when sufficient suitable host larvae are available. B. intercessor was responsible for 1.5% of the average mortality of the P. tabaniformis overwintering larvae. The host mortality caused by the summer generation of the parasitoid ranged from 3.2% to 5.8%. 相似文献

The distribution of the double spined spruce engraver beetle Ips duplicatus ranges from Scandinavia and northeastern Europe to northern Asia. In Europe, I. duplicatus usually is associated with I. typographus on Picea abies, and due to morphological similarities and similar gallery constructions the damage and significance of I. duplicatus are often not recognised and thus underestimated. I. duplicatus has been recently reported from the southern part of Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, northern parts of Austria and
Germany; records are missing from many other central European countries (e.g., Hungary). The species became an important pest
in some parts of central Europe, and continuous outbreaks of this bark beetle have been reported in Inner Mongolia, China,
since the 1950s. The aim of this study was to compare I. duplicatus populations from Europe and Asia by genetic means using the analysis of the mitochondrial DNA. Individuals of I. duplicatus populations from China, Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia were collected, and 520 bp fragments of the cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene were analysed. Four haplotypes were detected and a sequence divergence of 0.8% was found between the populations
from China and Europe. These differences associate with behavioural differences in the pheromone bouquet and behavioural response
of the two groups. Within Europe three haplotypes were found, but due to the small sample size no significant geographical
distribution was demonstrated. 相似文献

Genetic sexing technique based on the construction of a balanced lethal strain (BLS) has been proposed for Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller). The isolation of female with T(W;Z) translocation is a fundamental step to develop such a strain. Gamma irradiation
was used to induce the requested translocations. The availability of sex-linked morphological marker is required to facilitate
the detection of such mutations. Since a visible sex-linked marker has not been found in P. operculella, the main objective of our study was therefore to determine the possibility of using sex heterochromatin body as a marker
to identify the required translocated females. The appearance of sex heterochromatin body and the analysis of sex chromosomes
in F1 females of irradiated P. operculella females were investigated. The percentage of abnormality in sex heterochromatin body in highly polyploid Malpighian tubule
nuclei was positively correlated with the applied dose. Based on the appearance of this body, three mutant lines were isolated:
elongated, small and fragmented lines. W chromosome was easily distinguished from Z chromosome when the analysis of pachytene
sex chromosome bivalents of P. operculella females was carried out. The aberrations involved in W chromosome directly influenced the appearance of sex heterochromatin
body in highly polyploid somatic cells of the isolated mutant lines. The results showed that sex heterochromatin could be
used as sex determination and cytogenetic marker in P. operculella. 相似文献

First-generation adults of the rice water weevil, Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus Kuschel were collected from Yueqing (28.1°N latitude, 120.9°E longitude), Zhejiang, China, during late June and mid-July and reared on rice plants (cultivar Shanyou 63) in the laboratory (28±1 °C, 16L:8D) to examine their reproductive capacity. On plants aged 16–22 days, adults from the field and collected in mid-July could reach oviposition onset more rapidly and deposit more eggs than those collected earlier. Adults that emerged in late June and early July displayed a greater tendency to become reproductive, compared with those which emerged in mid-July. However, each of these groups of adults, either field-collected or newly emerged, deposited only 3–14 eggs within 60 days of feeding. Reproductive capacity was greatly related to plant age, with plants aged below 20 days being most favorable; on plants aged over 20 days, reproductive development could take place, but little oviposition was observed. These results indicate that the reproductive capacity of first-generation adults in Zhejiang is dependent upon the time of adult emergence and post-emergence, as well as on the age of rice plants. 相似文献

The cotton whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) (Hom., Aleyrodidae) is increasingly a very important pest on many vegetables, field crops and ornamental plants. Therefore,
controlling of this pest is still needed especially under glasshouse conditions. The specialist whiteflies’ predator, Serangium parcesetosum Sicard (Col., Coccinellidae) appears to have a great potential for the cotton whitefly control. In this study, the dynamic
changes in B. tabaci populations in glasshouse cabins in response to S. parcesetosum were monitored. B. tabaci were introduced to cotton plants in three cabins in average of 50 adults per plant. One and two weeks later, adult females
and males of S. parcesetosum were introduced at a rate of one female and one male per plant in the first and second cabins, respectively. The third cabin
was considered as a control. The results showed that the mean number of whiteflies in the control cabin was found significantly
higher than that of either when S. parcesetosum was introduced 1 or 2 weeks after the infestation with the whitefly. Also, the mean number of B. tabaci was significantly higher when the predator was introduced 2 weeks rather than 1 week after B. tabaci infestation. The maximum mean weekly number of whiteflies/plant was 192.3 in the second week, whereas it was 294.6 in the
third week and 1136.4 in the fifth week, in first, second and control cabins, respectively. In the last experimental week,
the mean weekly numbers were 74.7, 122.9 and 684.7 whiteflies/plant in the three cabins, respectively. S. parcesetosum has been successfully fed, reproduced and established its population on B. tabaci on cotton plants. The mean weekly number of the predatory individuals increased gradually with the progress of the experimental
time. The results demonstrated that the maximum reduction percentage in B. tabaci population was 90.7 and 86.5% in the fifth week after B. tabaci infestation, when the predator was introduced 1 and 2 weeks after the infestation with the whiteflies, respectively. Nevertheless,
it is speculated that an earlier release of S. parcesetosum would be more effective in the biological control of B. tabaci. 相似文献

In northern Laos, shortened fallows in the slash-and-burn upland rice system are not sustainable either from a production
or economic standpoint. This paper evaluates the potential for using the indigenous fast-growing tree, Broussonetia papyrifera L. Vent. (paper mulberry) as an economic fallow crop. The objectives of this study are to assess the inner bark yield of
paper mulberry, and to evaluate rice productivity following paper mulberry cultivation. In addition, allometric models for
estimating the inner bark yield of paper mulberry are developed. Inner bark yield of paper mulberry stands ranging in age
from 9 to 48 months ranged from 10 to 208 g m−2, and increased with age. The models using diameter at breast height and stem height, or diameter at breast height only as
independent variables explained well the variation in inner bark yield. When paper mulberry was completely removed during
the rice growing season, rice yields in these areas were similar to those following weedy bush fallow. When paper mulberry
was allowed to grow, rice yields were negatively correlated to paper mulberry stem density. When paper mulberry lateral branches
were pruned back, rice yields could be maintained if the paper mulberry stem density was <0.22 stems m−2, suggesting that if paper mulberry is managed properly, rice yields can be maintained at current levels. The paper mulberry-upland
rice rotation system improves the productivity of a traditional slash-and-burn system through harvesting paper mulberry inner
bark; however the long-term sustainability of such a system remains unclear and warrants further investigation. 相似文献
