Necropsy and culture results are presented for 269 consignments of imported birds (mainly psittacine and passerine species) examined between January 1977 and August 1980. Consignments were submitted for diagnosis of clinical illness or deaths occurring among these birds while they were in quarantine before entry into Canada. Enteritis and injury were the most frequent diagnoses. Pathogens or potential pathogens were isolated from 77% of consignments. Newcastle disease virus was isolated nine times, and Chlamydia psittaci was isolated once. Escherichia coli (from 113 consignments) and salmonellae (from 49) were the most common bacteria isolated, and reoviruses (from 22) and paramyxoviruses other than Newcastle disease virus (from 22) were the most common viruses. Salmonella typhimurium was the most common Salmonella serovar. Salmonella hadar was isolated from turkey poults imported from Great Britain. The possible public health significance of the role of imported birds in the introduction of exotic Salmonella serovars, or of serovars resistant to several antimicrobials is discussed. 相似文献

Avian paramyxovirus type 1 (Newcastle disease virus) and Salmonella typhimurium were isolated from the brain and lung tissues of double-crested cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus) from Lac Canard, Alberta, Canada. More than 100 birds died during this outbreak in 1999. Affected birds presented signs of central nervous system disease characterized by unilateral wing and leg paralysis. Other geographic locations in the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan have reported cases of cormorants suffering from diseases with signs compatible with Newcastle disease. The virus isolated in the 1999 outbreak was characterized as mesogenic. These findings suggest that other pathogens, like S. typhimurium, may influence the clinical presentation of disease caused by mesogenic strains of Newcastle disease virus in cormorants. 相似文献

An outbreak of velogenic viscerotropic Newcastle disease in exotic pet birds in the United States from April through July 1991 was investigated. More than 2,000 pet birds in 5 states (Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Texas, and Maryland) were tested. Infected birds were found in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, and Texas. This disease was eradicated without spread to domestic poultry. Epidemiologic investigations revealed the source of infection to be double yellow-headed Amazon parrots suspected to be illegally imported into Texas. 相似文献

One hundred and nineteen cockatoos (Cacatua sulphurea) were kept at the Animal Quarantine Station in Denpasar, Indonesia. These birds were intended to be exported overseas. Nine birds were found dead in a period of 17 days. Necropsies were performed on three, and tissues were taken for microbiological and histopathological examination. Examinations revealed that two birds had both Newcastle disease and aspergillosis, and one bird was found to contain hepatic intranuclear inclusion bodies suggestive of Pacheco's parrot disease. Newcastle disease and aspergillosis in cockatoos have frequently been diagnosed in our laboratory. However, the finding of hepatic intranuclear inclusion bodies in a cockatoo is considered to be the first in Indonesia. 相似文献

Newcastle disease virus (NDV) was isolated from the faeces of seven different species of clinically healthy captive wild birds. All seven NDV isolates were characterized as velogenic, based on the mean death time in embryonated hens' eggs and the intracerebral pathogenicity index in day-old chicks. Three of the isolates were placed in group C1 based on the reactions with monoclonal antibodies. The role of captive wild birds in the epidemiology of Newcastle disease is briefly discussed. 相似文献

The novel vaccination technique for feral pigeons was developed in the present study. Multi-age feral pigeons were vaccinated
orally with Newcastle disease (ND) strain I-2 vaccine coated on oiled rice. The results showed that 14 days after vaccination
40% of pigeons seroconverted with HI GMT of ≥3 log2 whereas 28 days after vaccination the seroconversion rate of these birds reached 100%. Moreover, all vaccinated pigeons survived
the challenge of virulent Newcastle disease virus (NDV). The findings from the present study indicated that the use of ND (strain I-2) vaccine in feral pigeons is feasible
and resulted into the production of protective antibody response. Thus ND I-2 vaccine may prevent the spread of NDV to other
birds particularly chickens. Furthermore the use of oral vaccine in feral multi-age pigeons overcomes the difficulty of catching
these birds for individual vaccination. 相似文献

The food pellet vaccine has been shown to be effective in trials conducted under laboratory and simulated field conditions. The village chickens vaccinated with the food pellet vaccine during the field trial were protected against virulent Newcastle disease virus. The efficacy of the food pellet vaccine in the field was evaluated by challenge trial in which 60 per cent protection was obtained, or by monitoring the incidence of Newcastle disease in vaccinated and unvaccinated birds. There was no report of Newcastle disease outbreaks in the vaccinated birds during the two-year period of the field trial. The ease in administering the food pellet vaccine makes it readily accepted by the farmers. 相似文献

All the poultry in each of four distinct Moroccan villages were vaccinated against Newcastle disease using Hitchner B1 and inactivated vaccines. Poultry in a fifth village were monitored as controls. Mortality in the poultry was followed for 20 weeks after the first vaccination and blood samples were taken every 4 weeks from chickens for estimation of antibodies against Newcastle disease virus. Sixty-three percent of the chicken population and 60% of the turkey population in the control village died during the 20 weeks of observation. Necropsied birds showed lesions consistent with Newcastle disease. Mortality did not exceed 22% in the vaccinated villages. 相似文献

During an epornitic of velogenic viscerotropic Newcastle disease (VVND) in southern California, free-flying wild birds, captive and free-ranging semidomestic birds, and exotic birds were collected from the quarantine area to determine their role in the epizootiology of the disease. The VVND virus was isolated from 0.04% of 9,446 free-flying wild birds, 0.76% of 4,367 semidomestic birds, and 1.01% of 3,780 exotic birds examined. Three house sparrows and 1 crow directly associated with infected poultry flocks were the only free-flying wild birds from which VVND virus was isolated. Among semidomestic species, ducks, quail, chukars, pheasants, peafowl, pigeons, and doves were found to be infected. Psttacines, pittas, and toucans accounted for 92% of the VVND virus isolations from exotic birds. In addition, domestic Newcastle disease virus (NDV) was isolated from 0.29% of the free-flying wild birds, from 1.65% of the semidomestic birds, and from 0.19% of the exotic birds collected. Hemagglutination-inhibition against domestic NDV was demonstrated in 0.24% of 3,796 wild bird serums, 8.28% of 2,004 semidomestic bird serums, and 3.90% of 231 exotic bird serums tested. Although few free-flying wild birds were infected with VVND virus in this epornitic, the isolation of domestic NDV strains from free-flying wild ducks and mourning doves suggests the potential for transportation of NDV over long distances by migratory birds. 相似文献

Conventional Newcastle disease vaccines are not suitable for application to village chickens in tropical countries of Asia. Trials with food-based vaccines are being initiated and the following experiments were performed to evaluate oral vaccination with Newcastle disease virus. Experimental chickens were vaccinated orally with the avirulent V4 strain of Newcastle disease virus and haemagglutination-inhibition antibody responses were measured. V4 virus was introduced into the crop by tube and total faecal output was collected daily and assayed for Newcastle disease virus. Virus was recovered on Days 5 and 6 after vaccination from most chickens that had received 10(7.4) and 10(6.4) 50% egg-infectious doses (EID50) of virus. There was no recovery of virus from birds receiving a lower dose of vaccine. Groups of chickens kept in cages with wire floors were given various doses of vaccine into the crop. Higher antibody titres were achieved with higher doses of virus. This dose responsiveness was not observed when various doses of vaccine were presented on food pellets and the groups of chickens were kept on concrete floors. Similar antibody responses were then seen with nominal doses of 10(5.2) and 10(8.2) EID50 per bird, possibly as a result of excretion and re-ingestion of the vaccine virus. Spread of the vaccine virus was demonstrated when control chickens and chickens receiving 10(7.7) EID50 of V4 virus on food pellets were housed together on a concrete floor. Similar antibody titres were achieved in both vaccinated and in-contact chickens. 相似文献

Equal numbers of day old White Rock and Nigerian indigenous male chicks were reared to 10 weeks of age under 4 variables consisting of 2 dietary regimes and 2 regimes of immunity (natural versus vaccinal) to Newcastle disease challenge. Although White Rock grew significantly faster, ate more food and tended to be more efficient in feed utilisation than the indigenous chicks, the mortality of the latter was significantly lower. Growth rate and feed intake were significantly greater, feed efficiency better and prechallenge mortality lower in birds fed on the higher crude protein diet. Prechallenge mortality was significantly lower in birds that had been vaccinated against Newcastle disease.

LaSota vaccination may not protect against the lesions of velogenic newcastle disease in chickens 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Two groups of six weeks old cockerels comprising 40 immunized and 40 non-immunized birds were inoculated intramuscularly with
VGF-1, which is a local Nigerian strain of velogenic Newcastle disease virus (VNDV). Immunized birds did not show any clinical
signs except significant loss (p < 0.05) in body weight on days 5 and 20 post inoculation (PI). But the non-immunized birds
showed clinical signs of disease characterized by anorexia and drowsiness from day 2 PI. These were followed on day 3 PI by
depression, diarrhoea, opisthotonus, weight loss (p < 0.05) and high mortalities (96.9%). Both the immunized and non-immunized
groups showed severe atrophy of the bursa, spleen and thymus. Histopathological section of these lymphoid organs showed necrosis
and depletion of lymphocytes. Both the gross and microscopic lesions were more severe in the non-immunized birds. Marked ballooning
degeneration was observed in the bursal follicles of the non-immunized birds. This lesion has not been described earlier for
any other disease and could be diagnostic for VND. Our results also showed that VND can cause marked atrophy of the lymphoid
organs, which may lead to immunosupression without the characteristic signs of Newcastle disease (ND) in vaccinated chickens.
This no doubt emphasizes the limitation of vaccination as a biosecurity measure in poultry industry.

The V4 strain of Newcastle disease virus was introduced into a small open range flock of bantam chickens, by dosing half the birds directly into the crop. As indicated by rises in titres of haemagglutination inhibition antibody, the virus spread to the uninoculated birds and persisted in the flock for two years, infecting chickens that were introduced by natural brooding and rearing. All new clutches of chicks seroconverted by 80 days of age, and the titres of adult birds showed a concurrent rise, suggesting that the chicks were amplifying the virus. The modes of spread and of persistence of the virus were not determined; although cloacal swabs were taken regularly, only one yielded virus. Antibody titres of the inoculated birds remained above the presumptive protective level of 3 (log2) for over a year, whereas the titres of birds infected by contact were generally less than 3. 相似文献

Birds on the islands of Luzon, Mindanao, and Palawan in the Republic of the Philippines were surveyed for viscerotropic velogenic Newcastle disease (VVND). Virus isolation was attempted on 728 cloacal samples from native and exotic psittacine birds, non-psittacine birds, and domestic chickens and ducks. A VVND virus isolate was obtained from a single domestic chicken that had exhibited ocular discharge and diarrhea 3 days before sampling. All other birds were negative for VVND. 相似文献

The immune response and protection from challenge afforded to adult pigeons by four different vaccination schedules were assessed. Intravenous challenge with a field pigeon isolate was done four weeks after the second of two doses of vaccine given four weeks apart. Little difference in protection was seen between two 0.25 ml and two 0.5 ml doses of oil emulsion vaccine, although the latter produced a slightly higher immune response. In both cases one of 10 challenged pigeons became sick and died. One dose of Newcastle disease virus B1 live vaccine followed four weeks later by 0.5 ml oil emulsion vaccine gave a comparable immune response to two 0.25 ml doses of oil emulsion but only six birds survived challenge. Two doses of Newcastle disease virus B1 vaccine gave a poor immune response and little protection from challenge; all 10 birds became sick and eight died. Assessment of the onset of protection following one dose of either 0.5 ml oil emulsion vaccine or Newcastle disease virus B1 indicated some partial protection in the latter group as early as five days after vaccination. Both groups showed protection at 10 days but by 21 days, although protection was sustained in the oil emulsion group, birds receiving live vaccine were fully susceptible. Measurement of the duration of protection in pigeons given two 0.5 ml doses of oil emulsion vaccine indicated that protection had begun to wane by 40 weeks after the first dose. 相似文献
