Ionizing energy as an aid in exchange tritium labeling

The tritium labeling of organic compounds by the Wilzbach technique-that is, by simple exposure of the compound to tritium gas-is greatly accelerated by the simultaneous exposure of the system to a silent electrical discharge. The incorporation of tritium into benzene was increased by a factor of about 10(4) without undue decomposition. Cobalt-60 gamma-rays were found to be far less useful for increasing the tritium incorporation.     

Spatial learning as an adaptation in hummingbirds

An ecological approach based on food distribution suggests that humming birds should more easily learn to visit a flower in a new location than to learn to return to a flower in a position just visited, for a food reward. Experimental results support this hypothesis as well as the general view that differences in learning within and among species represent adaptations.     

Computer graphics representation of levels of organization in tobacco mosaic virus structure

Methods for simplifying computer graphics images of atomic models of complex macromolecular assemblies have been applied to the tobacco mosaic virus structure to display different levels of its organization. By constructing sharply outlined pictures of the parts of the virus particle with the image resolution reduced or with obscuring detail eliminated, aspects of the subunit packing and chain folding are distinctly illustrated.

Ground-based thermal infrared surveys as an aid in predicting volcanic eruptions in the cascade range

Detailed, ground-based thermal surveys of selected slopes of Mt. Rainier and Mt. Lassen have provided quantitative data for the construction of thermal contour maps of portions of the flanks of these volcanoes. Preliminary surveys substantiate the existence of one suspected thermal anomaly on Mt. Rainier.     

Computer networks as social networks

Computer networks are inherently social networks, linking people, organizations, and knowledge. They are social institutions that should not be studied in isolation but as integrated into everyday lives. The proliferation of computer networks has facilitated a deemphasis on group solidarities at work and in the community and afforded a turn to networked societies that are loosely bounded and sparsely knit. The Internet increases people's social capital, increasing contact with friends and relatives who live nearby and far away. New tools must be developed to help people navigate and find knowledge in complex, fragmented, networked societies.

Ultrasound emission in infant rats as an indicant of arousal during appetitive learning and extinction

Infant rats rewarded for crawling by being allowed to suckle on the dry nipple of an anesthetized dam showed a decreasing rate of ultrasound production during acquisition and an increasing rate during extinction. These results suggest that infant rats can be stressed and are aroused as a result of successive nonrewards just as adult rats are. In addition, these results do not support the hypothesis that infant rats lack inhibitory mechanisms related to poorly developed neural centers.
