The production of Atlantic salmon smolts in Europe is close to 250 million per year with Norway and Scotland as the dominating producers. At present, more than 90% of the production takes place in land-based, single-pass flow-through farms, but conversion to recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) is being considered by many producers. About 18 million smolts are annually produced in cage-based farms in Scottish lochs.Over the last decade, the annual production at Norwegian hatcheries has increased 3–4 times. Introduction of efficient oxygenation both of inlet water and within the fish tanks is a key factor allowing a reduced specific water flow. Most water sources in coastal regions are characterised by very soft water. Insufficient carbon dioxide control is considered a major reason for disease outbreaks and reduced growth in hatcheries. Commonly applied water treatment attempts in hatcheries are ozonation and UV irradiation, CO2 stripping and addition of seawater. Only a few existing hatcheries in Norway and Scotland are presently utilising RAS. Modern RAS for smolt production are mainly large farms, e.g. a RAS farm on the Faeroe Islands which produces 6 million smolts annually.  相似文献

This study examined the effect of fish weight on the susceptibility of post-emergent pink salmon to Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Krøyer). Three trials were conducted, each with two stocks of pink salmon, Oncorhynchus gorbuscha (Walbaum), at starting weights of c . 0.3, 0.7 and 2.4 g, respectively. In each trial, duplicate tanks of fish were exposed to 0, 25 (only in Trial 1), 50 or 100 copepodids per fish. Mortality in Trial 1 was c . 37%, regardless of stock following exposures to 50 or 100 copepodids. Mortalities occurred up to 26 days after exposure, and more than 80% of the lice on the dead fish were chalimus stages. Infections with adult or preadult lice were observed on c . 35% of fish surviving to 37 days after exposure. Mortality was 5% in Trial 2 and there was no mortality in Trial 3. The abundance of L. salmonis was lower in Trial 3 compared with Trials 1 or 2. Histological changes in the skin coincident with fish growth included a thickening of the epidermis, infiltration of the dermis with fibroblasts by the end of Trial 1 and the first evidence of scales by the end of Trial 2; scales were evident throughout Trial 3. These results showed that the previously reported innate resistance to L. salmonis displayed by pink salmon develops in fish heavier than 0.3 g and appears to be functional by 0.7 g. This resistance coincided with changes to the epidermis and dermis, including the formation of scales. The present results indicate that elevated risk associated with L. salmonis infection among migrating post-emergent pink salmon may occur during a relatively brief period before the fish reaches 0.7 g.  相似文献

Underyearling coho salmon fry were subjected to three initial photoperiod treatments (6L18D, 10L14D, 14L10D) for two months and subsequently to three final treatments (16L8D, 9L6D1L8D, 10L14D) in a factorial design. Growth rates and seawater adaptability were monitored regularly. The groups that were exposed initially to 6L18D or 10L14D and then to 16L8D grew faster and had lower plasma sodium ion levels after seawater challenge tests than any of the other groups. Fish which were initially exposed to 6 L or 10 L daylength and then to a 9L6D1L8D skeleton photoperiod, showed a slightly lower growth rate and seawater adaptability than those given the corresponding complete 16L8D photoperiod. However fish maintained on skeleton photoperiods had significantly greater growth rates and seawater adaptability than those kept on the 10L14D photoperiod. This indicates that it is not the accumulated number of hours of exposure to light that initiates smolting, but rather the time during the day when light is experienced. Fish exposed initially to 14L10D showed little or no response to subsequent changes in photoperiod, suggesting that responsiveness to inductive photoperiods depends on the initial photoperiod treatment.  相似文献

The main aim of the present study was to examine the impact of some biological and environmental factors on the lipid and fatty acid compositions of farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), with special emphasis on 3 fatty acids. Two year groups of salmon at nine fish farms distributed along the Norwegian coast were fed the same diet and were sampled every second month. The data are believed to give a representative characterization of lipid and fatty acid content of salmon farmed in Norway.Multiple regression analysis revealed that variation in lipid content and body weight explained 80% of the variation found in 3 fatty acids in farmed salmon, and 22:6 3 showed greater variation than other 3 fatty acids. Further analysis of lipid-corrected values revealed only minor effects of latitude on the per cent content of highly unsaturated 3 fatty acids, and hardly any effect of seawater temperature, with the exception of 22:6 3, which decreased slightly with increasing temperature.The per cent 22:6 3 in the fillet became gradually reduced with increasing fish age and body weight, whereas the content of 20:5 3 and other 3 fatty acids remained relatively constant. The per cent content of 22:6 3 of young salmon was higher than in the feed, but approached the feed value gradually as body weight increased. The lipid content of the salmon increased with fish age, and the absolute quantitative contents of both 22:6 3 and 20:5 3 increased meanwhile, even though the per cent content of 22:6 3 decreased quite pronouncedly.The per cent 22:6 3 and other 3 fatty acids was higher in wild than in farmed salmon, but the absolute quantitative content was higher throughout in farmed salmon, which had higher lipid contents. The 3/6 ratio, which is important in human health evaluation, was lower in farmed than in wild salmon. The large flexibility of 3 fatty acids and lipid content of farmed salmon leave us with the option of producing a wide variety of salmon qualities requested by the market. Both per cent and absolute quantitative 3 contents, as well as the 3/6 ratio, may readily be manipulated.  相似文献

Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., parr habitat characterisation is usually performed by in situ measures of key environmental variables taken at the exact fish location if the fishing gear allows precise pinpointing of this location, or in large sampling sections covering a river reach or mesohabitat, often ignoring variability in the immediate vicinity around individual fish. These data may be critically important in the development and validation of habitat preference models. The influences of seven increasing distances of measures, the variation of the number of considered measures and the depth of velocity measurement (bottom or 0.6 of the depth) in the calculations of HSI (Habitat Suitability Index) from a multiple‐experts fuzzy model of Atlantic salmon parr habitat were tested. When a parr was present, six measures collected in a 50‐cm radius around the fish to provide an average measure as input data and velocity measured at 60% of the depth gave the highest HSI values. These results show some potential for the use of an intermediate study scale, between micro‐ and mesohabitat, and questions how fish habitat conditions are currently measured.  相似文献

The effect of a widely distributed phytoplankton bloom triggered by volcanic ash from Alaska (Hamme et al., 2010. Geophys. Res. Lett. 37) on juvenile Fraser River sockeye is discussed in terms of the timing of ocean migration and trophic structure of the Gulf of Alaska. Our hypothesis is that the occurrence of a massive diatom bloom in the Gulf greatly enhanced energy ascendancy in the ocean at a time of year when adolescent sockeye migrated from the coast in 2008. We contend this increase in food availability was an important factor for the survival and growth of juvenile sockeye which led to one of the strongest sockeye returns on record in 2010 of 34 million, compared with perhaps the weakest return on record of 1.7 million the previous year.  相似文献

Changes in immunoreactivity of Na+/K+-ATPase -subunit in gill sections of wild masu salmon (Oncorhynchus masou) during the parr-smolt transformation (smoltification) were compared with changes in gill Na+/K+-ATPase specific activity. Gill Na+/K+-ATPase specific activity increased from April and peaked in May. Immunohistochemical analysis, using an antiserum against a synthetic oligopeptide based on the conserved region of the Na+/K+-ATPase -subunit, revealed that immunoreactivity was confined to chloride cells in the surface layer of primary lamellae and the proximal end of secondary lamellae. The size and number of these cells increased gradually from February to May; however, the number of chloride cells of the secondary lamellae decreased in May. These data suggest that the synthesis of Na+/K+-ATPase and the proliferation of chloride cells occur prior to the elevation of enzyme activity. Moreover, it is likely the proliferation and hypertrophy of chloride cells on primary lamellae prepare smolts for entry into seawater and migration in the ocean.  相似文献

Abstract. The Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., was once of major importance to the fishing industry along the River Rhine. This paper discusses the Dutch and German salmon catches over the years 1863–1950. Even up to the end of the last century, it was not uncommon for Dutch and German fishermen to land 100000 salmon a year. However, factors such as the increased use of locks and weirs along the Rhine, coupled with growth in pollution, soon led to a rapid decline in numbers. By 1933, the salmon fishing industry in the Netherlands had virtually ceased to exist. Analysis of the available catch statistics suggests that the decline in the salmon population could have started before official records began. Although the degree of scatter in the data and uncertainties in the assumptions preclude the possibility of drawing firm conclusions about the survival rate of salmon, these figures illustrate how difficult it will be to maintain a stable population in the Rhine. Moreover, a number of changes have taken place since the heyday of salmon in western Europe, which could compound the problem. Of particular importance in the context of the Rhine are:
  • 1 the closure of two of the major migration routes to the sea (Haringvliet and Zuiderzee);
  • 2 morphological changes in the river;
  • 3 chemical and thermal pollution;
  • 4 the loss of accessible spawning and nursery areas of the required quality;
  • 5 the disappearance of salmon from other rivers that flow into the North Sea such as the Rivers Elbe, Weser and Ems. If salmon were only reintroduced into the Rhine, a certain proportion would probably stray and infiltrate these other rivers.
The fact that the impact of these changes is difficult to quantify increases the uncertainty associated with maintaining a stable stock of salmon in the Rhine.  相似文献

The River Bush (Northern Ireland) is an index river for the estimation of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., stock size, population dynamics and marine survival rates. Marine survival estimates are based on the number of smolts counted at a trap 3.5 km upstream of the river outlet. The survival from release to coastal inshore waters for acoustic‐tagged smolts released at the Bushmills trap varied between 32% and 68%, with both year and brightness during river exit playing a significant role in explaining the variations in survival. This constitutes an important survival bottleneck. Contrary to true marine mortality, this significant loss of smolts in the river and nearshore environments could be reduced by focused management actions. More studies on other rivers, where smolts are enumerated above the head of tide, could further partition smolt and post‐smolt mortality, help differentiate true marine survival and help understand fluctuations in adult returns.  相似文献

The impact of 17-estradiol (E2) and the putative estrogenic compound, 4-nonylphenol (4-NP), on smoltification and vitellogenesis in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) was investigated during a 30 day period starting late April. Three groups of fresh water (FW) fish (1 year old, mixed sexes, average weight 23 g) were injected once a week with 50 µg (0.18 µmol) 17-estradiol, 3 mg (13.6 µmol) 4-nonylphenol dissolved in peanut oil, or peanut oil alone as control. Every ten days, subgroups were challenged with 28 ppt seawater (SW) for 24h, and sampled together with subgroups of FW fish. Treatment effects were examined on vitellogenic and osmoregulatory parameters. E2 and 4-NP treatment increased the total calcium and protein level in plasma and the hepatosomatic index of FW fish, both indicating an activated vitellogenesis in the liver. The presence of vitellogenin in the plasma of 4-NP- and E2-treated groups was further indicated by the appearance of a high molecular weight vitellogenin band (550 kDa) in electropherograms produced by native gel electrophoresis. This band appeared in exactly the same position in both the E2- and the 4-NP-treated groups but could not be detected in controls. During the 30 day treatment period, control fish approached the peak of smoltification, as indicated by a distinct silvery appearance, decreasing condition factor, increasing levels of gill Na+,K+-ATPase and improved hypoosmoregulatory performance in the SW-challenge test. Both E2 and 4-NP treatments significantly inhibited the progress of smoltification, as judged by a significant reduction of gill Na+,K+-ATPase activity, relative -subunit Na+,K+-ATPase mRNA expression, gill chloride cell density and a poorer hypoosmoregulatory performance of treated fish. The impaired SW-tolerance of E2- and 4-NP-treated fish was strongly correlated with a decreased gill Na+,K+-ATPase activity. Despite a difference in relative potency, the present study shows that 4-nonylphenol and 17-estradiol may have qualitatively similar inhibitory effects on smoltification and hypoosmoregulatory physiology of Atlantic salmon. Both 4-NP and E2 activated the vitellogenic system, and the study supports the hypothesis that sexual maturation and smoltification are antagonistic, developmental phenomena in salmon. It is suggested that the presence of estrogenic compounds in the environment may negatively influence smoltification and migration in wild stocks of salmon.  相似文献

Salmon pituitary glands contain two structurally distinct -subunit proteins (1 and 2) of glycoprotein hormones: the 2-subunit is common to all salmon gonadotropins (GTH I and GTH II), whereas the 1-subunit is present in only some GTH I molecules. GTH I is predominant in the pituitary gland and plasma during gametogenesis of salmon, but the roles of the 2 GTHs in gametogenesis remain unclear. To understand the roles of GTH I, it is important to clarify patterns of 1- and 2-subunit production with sexual maturity. Thus, we produced antisera that recognized the 1- or 2-subunit, and then immunohistochemically examined the production sites of these subunits in the trout pituitary gland during ovarian development. In all pituitary glands examined, the immunoreactivity of both the 1- and 2-subunits was strong in the GTH II-producing cells, although salmon GTH II, both 1- and II-subunits, has not been detected. However, GTH I-producing cells showed a less dense immunoreactivity for 1- and 2-subunits, whereas the I-subunit was abundant. On the other hand, TSH cells, reacted with 2 but not with 1.  相似文献

Methods are described for controlling sex differentiation in the coho salmon, Oncorhynchus kisutch. Eyed eggs and alevins were immersed in solutions of estradiol-17β and 17α-methyltestosterone and fed these steroids in the diet for a period of 10 weeks postswim-up. In seven out of 10 groups that received estradiol all fish resembled normal females when sampled at 4 months posthatch. In fish treated with methyltestosterone at all except the lowest dose (25 and 50 μg/l) the gonads resembled neither normal males nor normal females; these gonads were composed largely of connective tissue with only occasional germ cells. Various proportions of male, female and intersex gonads were observed in groups which received androgen or estrogen only in the diet. The implications of the work for salmon culture include the production of sterile fish and increasing the proportion of female salmon in hatchery populations.  相似文献

Caligus rogercresseyi generates the greatest losses in the salmon industry in Chile. The relationship between salmon farming and sea lice is made up of various components: the parasite, host, environment and farming practices, which make it difficult to identify patterns in parasite population dynamics to define prevention and control strategies. The objectives of this study were to analyse and compare the effect of farming, sanitary practices and environmental variables on the abundance of gravid females (GF) and juveniles (JUV) of C. rogercresseyi on Salmo salar in three Salmon Neighborhood Areas (SNAs) in Region 10, south of Chile. Linear mixed‐effects models of the negative binomial distribution were used to evaluate the effect of the different explanatory variables on GF and JUV. Productive variables were the key drivers explaining the abundance of GF and JUV. Results suggest that C. rogercresseyi is not controlled and JUV are persistent in the three SNAs, and sanitary practices do not control the dissemination of the parasite among sites. Environmental variables had a low impact on sea lice abundance. There is a need to perform analysis for modelling of parasite population dynamics to improve Integrated Pest Management, including changes in the governance to achieve an effective prevention and control.  相似文献

Upwards of 95% triploidy was induced in landlocked, anadromous and hybrid (landlocked female × anadromous male) Atlantic salmon using heat shocks (5 min at 32°C, 20 min after fertilization and incubation at 10°C). On average, 23% of the treated eggs died within 24 h of fertilization. Most of the subsequent mortality occurred prior to hatching. In all cases, triploid hybrids had better survival rates than triploids of either pure form; triploid hybrids had survival rates comparable to those of diploid hybrids, whereas the survival rates of triploid pure forms were substantially lower than their respective diploid pure forms.Two types of morphological abnormalities were apparent in underyearling parr derived from control and heat shocked groups. Short gill covers were present in both diploid and triploid groups, and were not associated with the heat shock. Protruding lower jaws, however, were found almost exclusively in triploid fish, but were not present in all triploid fish within any particular treated group. No diploid fish originating from previously heat shocked eggs had protruding jaws, so the predisposition to this abnormality seems to depend on the triploid condition and not the heat shock.  相似文献

Due to problems with bone deformities in farmed Atlantic salmon, there is a growing interest in the possible involvement of vitamin K in normal bone development, and sensitive biomarkers for evaluating vitamin K status are therefore needed. The vitamin K-dependent (VKD) enzyme γ-glutamylcarboxylase (GGCX, EC 6.4.x.x) requires vitamin K as a cofactor for its post-translational modification of glutamic acid (Glu) residues to γ-carboxyglutamic acid (Gla) residues in VKD proteins, and is required for their function in haemostasis and bone metabolism. The present study was designed to evaluate the enzyme assay for GGCX activity in isolated liver microsomes and its distribution in the tissues of Atlantic salmon. The effect of KH2 and menadione on the GGCX activity in salmon liver was also compared. Results from the present study show a widespread tissue distribution and expression of GGCX in Atlantic salmon. The GGCX activity and ggcx expression in all bony tissues examined imply the presence of vitamin K, and suggest the involvement of vitamin K in bone metabolism of Atlantic salmon. We propose the GGCX assay as a sensitive marker for vitamin K status, and confirm that menadione does not work as a cofactor for GGCX in Atlantic salmon liver.  相似文献
