Type IV dermoid sinus,intramedullary dermoid cyst and spina bifida in a Cane Corso

A 1-year-old male Cane Corso was presented for progressive hindlimb neurologic deficits, with a history of suspected recurrent meningitis. Physical examination and advanced diagnostic imaging findings were suggestive of a thoracic dermoid sinus extending into the dura mater, and spina bifida. After initial medical treatment, the lesion was surgically excised, and the presence of an intramedullary cyst in continuation with the dermoid sinus was confirmed, requiring partial durectomy and myelotomy for removal. Histopathological examination of the excised tissue confirmed the diagnosis of a dermoid sinus associated with an intramedullary dermoid cyst. After surgery, the dog temporarily declined neurologically but then showed progressive neurological improvement. This report describes presentation and successful surgical treatment of a type IVa dermoid sinus associated with an intramedullary dermoid cyst and spina bifida in a dog.     

Dermoid sinus in a golden retriever

A case of dermoid sinus is reported in a golden retriever. The skin lesion was characterised by a fistulous tract in the dorsal cervical region. Surgical dissection revealed a cyst connected by a fibrous cord to the seventh cervical vertebra.     

Dermoid sinus in a Rhodesian ridgeback

A dermoid sinus was identified in a Rhodesian ridgeback dog. Diagnosis was by physical examination, contrast radiography, gross and microscopic evaluations. Surgical resection of the lesion was curative.     

Dermoid sinus removal in a rhodesian ridgeback dog

A three year old Rhodesian Ridgeback dog with a history of a small draining tract in the dorsal cervical area, was found to have a dermoid sinus on surgical exploration. The affected tissue was removed and histopathology done. The sinus is an inherited condition in this breed of dog, with surgical correction and neutering of affected individuals the treatments of choice to reduce the incidence of the dermoid sinus condition in the next generation.     

Unusual case of spina bifida in a Friesian cross calf

A case of spina bifida in a Friesian cross calf is described. The case was unusual as the calf was alive and ambulatory. There was no locomotor disturbance but a small skin defect was present in the thoracic region with anomalies of the thoracic vertebral laminae 9 and 10 and the associated ribs. Radiographic studies and post mortem findings are reported to indicate the extent of the lesion.     

Intraocular findings in three dogs and one cat with chronic glaucoma

Intraocular neoplasia may cause secondary glaucoma. If an intraocular prosthesis is placed in an eye with glaucoma secondary to intraocular neoplasia, the neoplasm frequently regrows around the prosthetic ball, resulting in recurrence of buphthalmos and signs of pain. Histologic examination of eviscerated intraocular contents of 4 animals resulted in diagnosis of intraocular neoplasia in 2 glaucomatous eyes and ruled out neoplasia as the cause of glaucoma in 2 eyes.     

Dermoid sinus and spinal malformations in a Yorkshire terrier: Diagnosis and follow-up

An unusual case of a Yorkshire terrier with a dermoid sinus associated with multiple spinal/costal malformations is described. The dog presented with ataxia and pain in the dorsal thoracic region. Diagnostic characterisation of the lesions was obtained with radiography, myelography and computed tomography. After surgical removal of the sinus, the dog showed marked clinical improvement over a two-year period.     

Angiolipomatous tumors in dogs and a cat

Variants of lipoma are uncommon, although fibrolipoma and infiltrative lipoma have been well documented. This report describes two cases of rare angiolipoma in dogs and the first documentation of angiofibrolipoma and infiltrating angiolipoma in a cat and a dog, respectively. Tumors were solitary, and most were located on the thorax of middle-aged patients. Angiolipomas were composed of mature adipose tissue mixed with variable numbers of blood vessels. In addition to the adipose and vascular components, the angiofibrolipoma contained bundles of collagenous connective tissue. The infiltrative angiolipoma had a primary mass external to the muscle and was histologically similar to a mixed intramuscular hemangioma that was confined to the muscle. Both disrupted bundles of striated muscle and were associated with segmental degeneration and loss of myofibers.     

Dermoid cyst of the spinal cord associated with ataxia in a cat

A young adult Balinese cat developed complete hindlimb paralysis which persisted for six weeks. Clinical findings suggested a lesion compressing the spinal cord and this was confirmed at necropsy. A dermoid cyst was present at the level of the third thoracic vertebra. The cyst was lined by stratified squamous epithelium and contained desquamated keratinised material and hair fragments. Sebaceous glands and hair follicles were present in the connective tissue wall. This is the first report of a dermoid cyst in the spinal cord of a cat. The lesion is considered to be a congenital anomaly.     

Developmental delay in islet-1-positive motor neurons in chick spina bifida

Spina bifida aperta (SBA) is a congenital malformation of the spinal cord with complications such as spinal ataxia and bowel and bladder dysfunction. We have developed a chick model with surgery-induced SBA that shows spinal ataxia after hatching. In the present study, motor neurons in the early stages in chicks with and without SBA were observed by immunohistochemical staining with a monoclonal antibody against Islet-1, a motor neuron marker. Delay in migration and maturation of motor neurons was observed in SBA. Although the final numbers of Islet-1-positive neurons in these two groups were not different, a defect in the production and elimination of excess motor neurons in the early developmental stages in the SBA group may be involved in the pathological mechanism of the motor complications of this disease.
