The interrelationships among d-11 conceptus size, d-105 placental weight, placental efficiency (the ability of the placenta to support fetal growth and development), fetal erythropoiesis, and uterine capacity were examined in 1/2 Meishan, 1/2 White crossbred gilts that were unilaterally ovariohysterectomized at 90 to 100 d of age. In Exp. 1, gilts were mated after at least one normal estrous cycle and then slaughtered at 105 d of gestation and number of fetuses and CL, placental weights, fetal weights, hematocrits, fetal plasma iron, and fetal plasma folate were measured. In Exp. 2, gilts were mated and plasma progesterone was measured on d 2 and 3 of gestation. On d 11, the length of the remaining uterine horn was recorded and the uterine horn was flushed with minimal essential medium. Number of CL, conceptus number, conceptus diameters, and total uterine flush retinol-binding protein (tRBP), acid phosphatase (tAP), and folate-binding protein (tFBP) were measured. Gilts were mated again and slaughtered at 105 d of pregnancy and the same traits measured in Group 1 were recorded. Plasma progesterone concentrations on d 2 and 3 were correlated with average conceptus diameter on d 11 (r = 0.60, P < 0.01, for each day). In contrast, tRBP (r = 0.49, P < 0.01), tAP (r = 0.53, P < 0.01), and tFBP (r = 0.51, P < 0.01) in uterine flushings on d 11 were only correlated with d-3 plasma progesterone concentrations. No correlations between d-11 average conceptus diameter or d-11 uterine length with d-105 uterine capacity were observed. Uterine capacity was negatively correlated with placental weight, fetal weight and fetal hematocrit (r = -0.36, P < 0.01; r = -0.44, P < 0.01; r = -0.32, P < 0.01; respectively). Hematocrits were correlated with fetal plasma iron (r = 0.50, P < 0.01) and folates (r = 0.44, P < 0.01). Hematocrit, plasma iron, and plasma folate were each correlated with residual fetal weights after adjusting for placental weight (a measure of placental efficiency), and accounted for 11% of the variation in this trait. These data suggest that conceptus diameter and uterine protein secretion on d 11 may be influenced by the onset of progesterone secretion by the CL, but do not support an influence of conceptus growth during early pregnancy on uterine capacity. These results also suggest that reducing placental and fetal weights will likely result in increased uterine capacity.  相似文献

Meishan and Yorkshire gilts were bred exclusively to Yorkshire and Meishan boars, respectively, resulting in similar Meishan x Yorkshire fetuses gestating in the uteri of both maternal breeds. Gilts of both breeds were slaughtered on d 90 and 110 of gestation, and the weight and volume of each uterine horn was determined. Fetal weights and crown-rump lengths were recorded. A section of the chorioallantoic-endometrial attachment site was collected for each conceptus and evaluated for placental and endometrial vascular density. An intact placenta was recovered for each conceptus and weighed, and its surface area was determined. Fetal weight and crown-rump length increased (P < .001) markedly between d 90 and 110 of gestation in Meishan and in Yorkshire uteri, but they were markedly less (P < .001) in Meishan than in Yorkshire uteri. Placental weight and placental surface area were reduced by 40% in Meishan, compared with Yorkshire, uteri; however, placental size did not increase between d 90 and 110 in either uterine type. Placental vascular density and associated endometrial vascular density were similar (P > .20) for conceptuses in Meishan and Yorkshire uteri on d 90 and 110 of gestation. Additionally, even though the ratio of fetal weight: placental weight (placental efficiency) increased between d 90 and 110, placental efficiency was similar for conceptuses in Meishan and Yorkshire uteri. In a previous study using straightbred Meishan or Yorkshire conceptuses gestated in either a Meishan or Yorkshire uterus, we found Meishan conceptuses had a markedly greater placental efficiency than did Yorkshire conceptuses, regardless of the type of uterus in which they were gestated. These data indicate that uterine type determines conceptus size and conceptus genotype controls placental efficiency.  相似文献

Our laboratory has demonstrated that Yorkshire placentae increase in size and surface area during the final third of gestation. In contrast, Meishan placental size remains constant during late gestation, but the density of blood vessels at the placental-endometrial interface increases markedly. Preliminary observations from our laboratory suggest that if one of two adjacent Meishan fetuses dies, the placenta of the remaining Meishan conceptus fails to increase its length of implantation or its placental weight or surface area. In contrast, if one of two adjacent Yorkshire fetuses dies, the adjacent conceptus accelerates its placental growth. The objective of this experiment was to document that Yorkshire, but not Meishan, conceptuses accelerate placental growth when adjacent fetuses are experimentally destroyed on d 40 of gestation. Straightbred Meishan (n = 5) and Yorkshire (n = 5) females were laparotomized and one uterine horn was randomly assigned to receive fetal crushing (treated horn); the other uterine horn served as a within-animal control. In the treated horn, every other fetus was then crushed through the uterine wall and the animals were allowed to recover. On d 111, animals were killed, uteri were recovered, and fetal weight, crown-rump length (CRL), placental weight, implantation site length, and placental surface area were recorded. Although there were no statistically significant differences in fetal weight or CRL observed between treated or control horns of females of either breed, there was a tendency for the fetuses in the treated uterine horn to be longer and heavier in both breeds. There were no differences in placental weight, placental surface area, or implantation site length between conceptuses in Meishan treated and control horns, which averaged 173.8+/-6.4 g, 1,162.7+/-35.9 cm2, and 19.0+/-0.4 cm, respectively. In contrast, placental weight, placental surface area, and implantation site length were increased (P < 0.05) in Yorkshire treated horns compared to Yorkshire control horns (306.1+/-26.0 g, 1,835+/-93.9 cm2, and 33.4+/-1.5 cm vs 253.7+/-13.4 g, 1,474.3+/-50.4 cm2, and 27.2+/-0.8 cm; respectively). These data confirm that Yorkshire conceptuses, but not Meishan conceptuses, accelerate placental growth when adjacent littermates perish as late as d 40 of gestation. These data indicate that differences exist in the strategies employed by Meishan and Yorkshire conceptuses in the competition for nutrients during gestation.  相似文献

Mechanisms of intrauterine migration were examined in 55 ewes. In the first experiment, corpora lutea were removed from unilaterally ovariectomized ewes on d 4 (d 0 = estrus) and pregnancy was maintained by giving exogenous progesterone. In Exp. 2, the reproductive tract was altered surgically such that embryos initially entered the uterine horn contralateral to the site of ovulation. In Exp. 3, ewes received beads of silastic polydimethylsiloxane that released either cholesterol or estradiol-17 beta in an attempt to mimic embryonic synthesis of estradiol. In the fourth experiment, unilaterally ovariectomized ewes were superovulated and spacing of embryos within the uterus was then examined. In all experiments, ewes were slaughtered on d 15 and recovery of embryos or beads from each uterine horn indicated that migration had occurred. All ewes in Exp. 1 and 2 that had two conceptuses experienced embryonic migration. Beads impregnated with estradiol migrated farther (P less than .01) than cholesterol-containing beads (27.6 +/- 4.3 vs 12.5 +/- 1.6 cm, respectively). In Exp. 4, only one conceptus had migrated into the contralateral horn in all ewes. These results demonstrated that 1) embryonic migration was not affected by local vs systemic exposure to progesterone, 2) embryos migrated into the unoccupied horn, regardless of the initial horn of entry, 3) estradiol may stimulate embryonic migration, and 4) conceptuses were not equally distributed between horns.  相似文献

Treatment of lactating and nonlactating parous cows (n = 379) with 12 mg of FSH-P to evaluate development of multiple bovine fetuses resulted in ovulation rates ranging from 1 to 27 corpora lutea (CL). Fertilization rate (i.e., ova fertilized at 6 to 8 d postmating, 80.0%) was not affected by ovulation rate. The percentage of fetuses developing normally at 51 to 53 d postmating decreased (P less than .01) as ovulation rate increased; 1 CL, 100.0%; 2 CL, 100.0%; 3 CL, 66.7%; 4 CL, 45.8%; 5 CL, 33.3%; 6 to 10 CL, 13.6%; and greater than 10 CL, 8.9%. Of the 86 cows permitted to calve, 47 produced singles, 22 twins, 9 triplets, 7 quadruplets, and 1 quintuplets. Calf birth weight and gestational length decreased (P less than .01) as the number of calves born increased from one to two to three. Smaller decreases (P less than .05) in birth weight occurred among triplets, quadruplets, and quintuplets, whereas gestational length did not differ (P greater than .1) among these groups. Systemic progesterone concentrations in the dam were proportional (P less than .01) to the number of fetuses in utero between d 126 and 266 for dams gestating one, two, or three or more fetuses; estrone sulfate was lower (P less than .01) in dams with one than in those with two or more fetuses. Placental weight (i.e., cotyledons plus intercotyledonary membranes) per fetus at 52 +/- 1 d of gestation and at term decreased as the number of fetuses increased. The chorioallantoic membranes were often fused among multiple fetuses and contained either all viable or all dead fetuses, but not both, within the same anastomosed placental unit. These results suggest that ovulation rate is the first limiting factor to increasing cow productivity for beef cattle because some bovine females had the capacity to gestate up to three fetuses per uterine horn, or a total of five fetuses, above which pregnancy was terminated.  相似文献

Twenty-one pregnant mares with single or twin conceptuses between 41 and 65 days of gestational age were allotted to 5 treatment groups. A ventral median celiotomy was performed in all mares. In group-1 mares (3 mares, single conceptus), the uterus and fetus were palpated for 5 minutes. In group-2 mares (3 mares, single conceptus, flunixin meglumine), 250 ml of sterile placental fluid was injected into the nongravid uterine horn. In group-3 mares (4 mares, unicornuate twin conceptuses), group-4 mares (3 mares, unicornuate twin conceptuses, flunixin meglumine), and group-5 mares (8 mares, bicornuate twin conceptuses, flunixin meglumine), 1 conceptus was removed from the uterus via hysterotomy. All mares received progesterone prophylactically until day 100 of gestation or until the fetus died. The 3 mares in group 1 delivered clinically normal, live foals. The mean prostaglandin F2 alpha metabolite (PGFM) plasma concentration peaked at 180 +/- 5.2 pg/ml during uterine manipulation and fetal palpation, then declined to baseline by 1 hour. Free placental fluid (group 2) undermined the chorioallantois ventrally and resulted in fetal death within 3 hours after surgery. The mean PGFM plasma concentration peaked at 39 +/- 4 pg/ml following injection of placental fluid. None of the remaining fetuses in the 7 mares with unicornuate twin conceptuses (groups 3 and 4) survived. Five mares with unicornuate twin conceptuses (group 5) delivered single viable foals. Effects of recombinant bovine somatotropin (rbST) on ovarian and uterine function and the production of components of the insulin-like growth factor (IGF) system were examined during the period of maternal recognition of pregnancy in cattle. Lactating dairy cows were treated with 25 mg/d rbST (n = 8) or saline (n = 8) for 16 d after estrus. Ovaries, uteri, and conceptuses were collected on Day 17 after estrus. The length (millimeters) of the conceptus was recorded. The concentration of IGF-I and the content of IGF-binding proteins (BP) in uterine flushings were determined. Corpora lutea (CL) were weighed, and the number of follicles (⩾2 mm in diameter) were counted. Follicular fluid from the largest and second-largest follicles was assayed for the concentration of IGF-I, IGFBP, progesterone, and estradiol. The length of the conceptus and the total amount of IGF-I in uterine fluid were similar for rbST and control. Recombinant bST increased 1) the weight of the CL, 2) the number of largest follicles (10 to 15 mm in diameter), 3) the concentration of IGF-I in the follicular fluid, 4) the follicular fluid content of IGFBP of the largest estrogenic follicle, and 5) the quantity of IGFBP in uterine flushings. The concentration of progesterone in the follicular fluid tended to be increased in rbST-treated cows, whereas the concentration of estradiol was similar to that of control cows. The concentration of progesterone in plasma was similar for rbST compared with control. In conclusion, the administration of rbST in lactating dairy cows for 16 d after estrus did not alter the growth of the conceptus collected on Day 17. The greatest responses to rbST were found within the ovary, where rbST increased the weight of the CL and altered the amount of IGF-I and IGFBP in the follicular fluid.  相似文献

Plasma follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) was evaluated in gilts from two studies in which ovulation rate was increased through direct selection for number of corpora lutea (CL) to determine whether selection for ovulation rate affected FSH secretion during prepubertal development. In the first study, 76 control and 110 selected gilts of University of Nebraska gene pool lines were bled twice during prepubertal development. Plasma FSH concentrations were greater (P < 0.05) at 53 (13.5%) and 75 (21.3%) d of age in selected than in control gilts. In the second study, 254 control gilts, 261 gilts from a line selected for ovulation rate, and 256 gilts from a line selected for uterine capacity were bled at three prepubertal ages. Plasma FSH was greater (P < 0.05), relative to controls, on d 34 (> 24%), 55 (> 13%), and 85 (> 10%) in White Composite gilts selected for either increased ovulation rate or for greater uterine capacity. Unilateral ovariectomy and hysterectomy were performed at 160 d of age on random gilts in these three lines (n = 377); weights of these organs were evaluated to determine whether selection affected their development. Ovarian and uterine weights were less (P < 0.01) in the control than in the ovulation rate line. Subsequently, ovulation rate was determined during pregnancy (n > or = 130 gilts/line). Controls had fewer (P < 0.01) CL (14.6) than gilts of the ovulation rate line (17.7) but numbers similar (P > 0.10) to those of gilts of the uterine capacity line (14.7). Within each line, plasma FSH only on d 85 correlated positively with subsequent ovulation rate (P < 0.03, 0.001, and 0.08; r = 0.17, 0.30, and 0.15 for control, ovulation rate, and uterine capacity lines, respectively). Ovarian weight at 160 d of age also correlated with subsequent ovulation rate (P < 0.03 and 0.001; r = 0.23 and 0.38) in control and ovulation rate gilts but not in uterine capacity gilts (P > 0.10; r = 0.11). Gilts selected for increased number of CL, in two independent studies, had greater concentrations of FSH during prepubertal development than respective controls. The modest but significant, positive association of FSH at 85 d of age with subsequent ovulation rate provides additional support for using plasma FSH in prepubertal gilts to indirectly select for ovulation rate.  相似文献

Previous comparisons between the cDNA and gene sequences for secreted folate binding protein (sFBP) indicated a 12-bp insertion/deletion (ins/del) polymorphism in exon 1 and a SNP that altered (Ser-Arg) the protein AA sequence. The effect of the Ser-Arg SNP on reproductive traits was examined in three groups of Meishan-White European breed crossbred gilts. The gilts for all three groups were unilaterally hysterectomized-ovariectomized (UHO) at 100 d of age. Group 1 gilts (n = 77) were mated at estrus, slaughtered at d 105 of pregnancy, and a blood sample was collected from each fetus to determine fetal hematocrit. The number of corpora lutea and fetuses and the fetal and placental weights were recorded. Group 2 gilts (n = 46) were mated, the remaining uterine horn was flushed with 20 mL of saline on d 11 of pregnancy, conceptuses were counted, and flushings were measured for total sFBP. Gilts were allowed an estrous cycle to recover, mated again at estrus, slaughtered at 105 d of gestation, and the data as described for Group 1 were collected. Groups 1 and 2 gilts were genotyped for the Ser-Arg SNP. In Group 3, gilts (n = 70) and boars (n = 30) were genotyped for the Ser-Arg SNP before mating, and like genotypes were mated. Gilts were then treated as described for Group 2. The effect of the 12-bp ins/del on reproductive traits was examined in 407 white crossbred UHO gilts from a randomly selected control line and from lines selected for ovulation rate (OR) and uterine capacity (UC). Gilts were mated and slaughtered at 105 d of age, and the numbers of corpora lutea and live fetuses, and fetal and placental weights and fetal hematocrits were recorded. The 12-bp ins/del also was evaluated in 131 intact gilts from the OR selected line. These gilts were mated at approximately 250 d of age and farrowed. The numbers of fully formed and live piglets were recorded. A significant effect (P < 0.05) of the Ser-Arg SNP was detected on the number of embryos present on d 11 of pregnancy and on UC. The sFBP 12-bp ins/del was associated with UC (P < 0.01) and the number of CL (P < 0.05) in UHO gilts, but not with litter size in intact gilts from the OR line. Results suggest that the 12-bp ins/del polymorphism could be exploited to increase litter size in swine, provided that the negative effect of the polymorphism on OR is overcome.  相似文献

The role of altered uterine-embryo synchrony on conceptus growth in the pig   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
This study was conducted to determine whether inducing an embryo-uterine asynchrony during the preimplantation period would alter fetal and(or) placental size at term. Yorkshire gilts (n = 24) were checked twice daily for estrus and bred to a Yorkshire boar 24 h after the first exhibition of estrus. Embryos (1 to 4 cells) were flushed from the oviducts of each donor gilt on d 2.5 of gestation and transferred in equal numbers to the oviducts of a recipient gilt on d 1.5, 2.5, or 3.5 of the estrous cycle. Gilts were slaughtered on d 112 of gestation (calculated on the age of the conceptus) and fetal and placental weight, placental surface area, and implantation site lengths were determined. Although litter sizes were similar (9.1+/-0.9), conceptuses transferred to d 3.5 recipients became heavier fetuses (1.44+/-0.05 vs 1.23+/-0.04 kg, P < 0.001), with larger placental surface areas (1,793+/-60 vs 1,459+/-43 cm2, P < 0.01), and longer implantation sites (32.1+/-1.5 vs 24.9+/-0.6 cm, P < 0.001) than those transferred to recipients on d 2.5. These data demonstrate that oviductal transfer of embryos into a reproductive tract that is more advanced by as little as 24 h can result in alterations in placental growth and function during gestation.  相似文献

Meishan embryos transferred to recipient females on d 2.5 are larger, contain greater numbers of trophectoderm cells, and secrete greater amounts of estradiol-17beta (E2beta) when gestated in a Yorkshire as compared with Meishan uterus to d 12. Additionally, placentas of Meishan conceptuses are larger when gestated in a Yorkshire as compared with Meishan uterus throughout gestation. Embryonic E2beta secretion during elongation on d 12 to 13 of gestation is temporally associated with endometrial secretion of growth factors, including IGF-I, which has been shown to increase mitotic rate in the trophectoderm of pig embryos. This experiment was conducted to determine whether E2beta administration to Meishan gilts at the time of conceptus elongation would increase placental size at term. Meishan gilts (n = 12) were checked twice daily for estrus (0700 and 1900), and each was bred to a Meishan boar at 0 and 24 h after the onset of estrus (d 0). Gilts were randomly assigned in equal numbers to receive injections of sesame oil (VEH) starting on d 12 (control), 1 mg of E2beta in VEH starting on d 12 (E212), or 1 mg of E2beta in VEH starting d 13 (E(2)13). The injections were initiated at 0700 or 1900 (corresponding to the time of day they first exhibited estrus) and continued at 6-h intervals for 48 h, resulting in 8 mg of E2beta given in eight injections. Pregnant gilts were killed on d 112 of gestation, and ovulation rate, litter size, implantation site length, fetal weight, crown-rump length, placental weight, and placental surface area were quantified. There were no differences among E(2)12, E(2)13, and control females in ovulation rate or litter size, which averaged 16.3 +/- .7 and 11.8 +/- .7, respectively. Fetal weight and crown-rump length were not different (P > .10) among E(2)12, E(2)13, and control females, averaging 802 +/- 26 g and 24.3 +/- .3 cm. Placentas were markedly heavier (176 +/- 14 and 174 +/- 16 vs 134 +/- 10 g, P < .05) and larger (1,337 +/- 97 and 1,520 +/- 70 vs 978 +/- 29 cm2, P < .001) for E(2)12 and E(2)13 vs control gilts, respectively. Placental efficiency (estimated as fetal weight:placental weight) was greater (P < .05) in the control than in the E(2)12 and E(2)13 gilts (5.8 +/- .2 vs 4.8 +/- .2 and 5.1 +/- .4). These data demonstrate that the amount of E2beta exposure around the time of elongation affects placental size at term. Additionally, the difference in placental efficiency between control and E2beta groups indicate that E2beta-induced increases in placental size led to a reduced placental efficiency.  相似文献

Incidence of embryo reduction (natural elimination of one member of a twin set) before d 11 was studied by comparing the number of ultrasonically detected conceptuses per ovulation between single and double ovulators. Effect of unilateral (n = 24) vs bilateral (n = 26) double ovulations on the incidence of embryo reduction also was considered. Each of 50 double-ovulating mares was matched with two single ovulators yielding 100 ovulations, or potential embryos, per group. Frequency with which an ovulation resulted in a conceptus was greater for single ovulators (85%, P less than .01) and for bilateral double ovulators (77%, P less than .05) than for unilateral double ovulators (60%). The difference between single and bilateral ovulators was not significant. Expected frequencies for none, one or two conceptuses per mare for double ovulators were calculated using the d-11 pregnancy rate for the single ovulators (85%). For unilateral ovulators, but not for bilateral ovulators, observed frequencies of none, one or two conceptuses were different (P less than .05) from expected (observed and expected, respectively, for no conceptuses, 29% and 2%; one conceptus, 21% and 26%; two conceptuses, 50% and 72%). Results did not indicate the existence of an embryo reduction phenomenon before d 11 in bilateral ovulators; each ovum had the same chance (no significant difference) of developing into a d-11 conceptus as an ovum in single ovulators. In unilateral double ovulators, the lower d-11 pregnancy rate per ovum, compared with bilateral ovulators and single ovulators, was attributable to a greater frequency of mares with no embryonic vesicles rather than to a greater frequency of mares with one vesicle.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

This study examined the effect of number of conceptuses on maternal concentrations and profiles of estrogen sulfate, estrone, estradiol-17 beta, progesterone and prolactin in gilts. Estradiol-valerate injections were used to induce pseudopregnancy (O conceptuses; n = 5) and oviduct ligation or no treatment were utilized to obtain pregnant gilts with 4 to 7 (n = 4), or 8 to 11 (n = 4) conceptuses, respectively. Blood samples were collected every 10 d from d 10 through 110 of pregnancy or pseudopregnancy. At 110 d after onset of estrus, all gilts were slaughtered and numbers and(or) weights of fetuses, corpora lutea, placentae and the empty uterus were determined. Concentrations of estrogen sulfate and estrone, but not progesterone or prolactin, were associated with fetal number, total fetal weight, total placental weight or empty uterine weight. In contrast, only progesterone was highly correlated with number of corpora lutea. Results suggest that most conjugated estrogen, estrone and estradiol were of fetal-placental origin, whereas little, if any, placental production of progesterone or prolactin occurred. Increases in estrogen sulfate and estrone concentrations were observed at gestation d 30 and from d 70 to 100. The latter increase coincides with previously established increases in the rate of maternal mammary development and fetal growth.  相似文献

The hypothesis that subnormal luteal function after induced ovulation in anestrous ewes was the result of uterine influences exerted during the periovulatory period was tested. Crossbred ewes (n = 27) in seasonal anestrus were induced to ovulate by administration of 12 doses of 250 ng of LHRH at 2-h intervals, followed immediately by a bolus injection of LHRH (250 micrograms; d 0). Ewes were unilaterally hysterectomized on either d -3 (PRELHRH) or 2 (POSTLHRH). Daily blood samples were collected and assayed for progesterone (P4) and 13,14-dihydro-15-keto-prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGFM). All ewes were slaughtered on d 10, and corpora lutea (CL) were collected, weighed, and assayed for concentration of P4. All ewes that ovulated exclusively in the ovary ipsilateral to the remaining uterine horn had a transient increase in plasma P4 of 2 to 3 d (short luteal phase). In ewes with at least one CL in the isolated ovary, elevated plasma P4 was maintained after hysterectomy but was consistently lower (P less than .05) in POSTLHRH ewes than in PRELHRH ewes. Concentrations of PGFM did not differ between treatments. The CL ipsilateral to the remaining uterine horn weighted less (P less than .01) and contained less P4 (P less than .01) than contralateral CL. These data confirm the hypothesis that premature regression of subnormal CL is uterine-dependent in a local fashion. Influence of initial length of uterus available to each embryo on its subsequent survival and development was determined by systematic restriction of the length available to each potential embryo. Fifty-seven pregnant crossbred gilts were laparotomized at d 3 of gestation, length of uterine horns was measured in situ and corpora lutea (CL) were counted. In Exp. 1, uterine space available to each potential embryo was restricted by ligating one uterine horn 5 cm from the tip per CL. Uteri were examined at d 20, 25 or 50. In Exp. 2, one uterine horn was ligated on d 3 at 10, 20 or 30 cm from the tip per CL and uteri were examined at d 50. Embryos in the restricted section (RS) had a specific mean uterine length available to each potential embryo of 5, 10, 20 or 30 cm. Embryos in the nonrestricted section (NRS) had a variable mean uterine length available to each potential embryo of 44 +/- 4 cm. When embryos were restricted to 5 cm, the proportion of surviving fetuses at d 20, 25 and 50 was 61, 12 and 8%, respectively, whereas in combined NRS it was 82%. When the uterus was examined at d 50 after restricting embryos to 10, 20 or 30 cm/CL, 25, 33 and 52% of fetuses survived; in combined NRS survival was 71%. Each fetus surviving to d 50 in RS was associated with 36 cm of initial uterine length but fetal survival was not associated with number of CL. Eighty crossbred gilts were assigned randomly to treatments: 1) removal of an ovary and ipsilateral uterine horn (UHO) at 130 d of age and removal of the remaining ovary and uterine horn 12 d post-puberty; 2) UHO at 130 d of age, mated and reproductive tracts recovered when slaughtered at 30 d of gestation; 3) UHO 12 d post-puberty, mated and slaughtered at 30 d of gestation and 4) unoperated controls that were mated and slaughtered at 30 d of gestation. Age of puberty was not affected by treatments. Gilts in treatment 1 had a mean ovulation rate at the pubertal estrus comparable to gilts in treatment 3. But, gilts in treatments 2 and 3 had 16% fewer (P less than .01) corpora lutea at 30 d of gestation than control gilts. Length and weight of the remaining uterine horn at 12 d post-puberty for gilts treated at 130 d of age were similar to the averages of gilts left intact. Gilts with one uterine horn had 2.2 fewer live embryos at 30 d of gestation than control gilts (P less than .01). But, the proportion of corpora lutea represented by live embryos did not differ significantly among treatments. Gilts with one uterine horn had 1.1 fewer live embryos (P less than .15) after adjustment for number of corpora lutea, less uterine space occupied by each embryo (P less than .01) and less total placental membrane per embryo (P less than .05) than control gilts.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

To determine if a transient increase in uterine blood flow (BF) and estradiol-17 beta (E2 beta) secretion occurs during maternal recognition of pregnancy in ewes (as previously observed for sows and cows), 40 nonpregnant (NP) ewes were assigned in equal numbers to surgery on d 9, 11, 13 or 15 postestrus (d 0 = day of estrus). For 20 NP ewes (five/day), each uterine horn (UH) was flushed with saline and uterine flushings (UF) collected. For the remaining 20 ewes, BF was determined for each UH using electromagnetic transducers, and samples of uterine arterial (UA) and uterine venous (UV) blood were obtained from each UH. After an intervening cycle, each ewe was mated, subjected to surgery on the same day postmating as during her previous nonmated cycle, and BF measurements and UA and UV samples were obtained. In addition, each UH of pregnant (P) ewes was flushed and the location of conceptuses was determined. Concentrations of E2 beta and progesterone (P4) in UA and E2 beta in UV and UF were determined by radioimmunoassay. For NP ewes, BF (ml/min) was not different for UH ipsilateral or contralateral to the ovary bearing the corpus luteum (CL), and did not differ across days, averaging 6.5 +/- .4. For P ewes, BF to UH contralateral to the ovary bearing the CL on all days and BF to UH ipsilateral to ovaries bearing CL on d 9 was similar to BF of either UH of NP ewes, averaging 6.8 +/- .6. The aim of this study was to investigate whether uterine capacity (UC) in rabbits was related to uterine horn length and weight and whether these uterine traits and vascular supply were related to fetal development and survival. Data from 48 unilaterally ovariectomized (ULO) does of the High and 52 ULO does of the Low UC lines of a divergent selection experiment on UC were used. Does were slaughtered on d 25 of fifth gestation. The High line showed higher ovarian weight (0.08 g, P < 0.05) linked to a higher ovulation rate (1 ovum, P < 0.05) and greater length of the empty uterine horn. There were no differences between lines in the remaining doe traits. The number of implanted embryos and live fetuses, fetal survival, and uterine weight and length were positively associated and explained most of the observed variation. Average weights of the live fetuses and their fetal and maternal placentae were not related to uterine weight and length. The linear regression coefficient of full uterine horn length on the number of live fetuses was 2.43 +/- 0.21. The weight of the full uterine horn showed a small quadratic relationship (P < 0.05) with the number of live fetuses. Full uterine horn length, after adjusting for the number of embryos, was negatively associated (P < 0.001) with the number of dead fetuses. The linear regression coefficient of average fetal placental weight of the live fetuses on number of implanted embryos was higher (P < 0.10) in the Low line (-0.23 +/- 0.04 vs. -0.12 +/- 0.04). The linear regression coefficient of average weight of the live fetuses on the average weight of their fetal placentae was higher (P < 0.10) in the High line (2.56 +/- 0.47 vs. 1.27 +/- 0.57). The High line was more efficient, most likely because an increase in intrauterine crowding has a lesser effect on the development of fetal placentae and fetuses. The fetal position within the uterus did not affect the proportion of dead embryos. Fetuses with placentae receiving a single blood vessel had a higher probability of death (P < 0.001) and the lowest weight. There was no difference between lines for individual weight of the live fetuses, but the High line showed higher individual weights of fetal (P < 0.01) and maternal placentae (P < 0.10). Live fetuses in the midportion of the uterus were lighter in weight (P < 0.05) than in the oviductal and cervical regions (20.3 vs. 21.6 and 21.7g). Increasing uterine capacity increases uterine length and decreases weights of fetus and fetal placenta in rabbits.  相似文献

An experiment was performed to evaluate the effect of the side of ovulation with respect to the previously gravid uterine horn on fertility of cows inseminated at one of two periods postpartum. All cows were treated with an intravaginal progesterone insert for 7 d and received estradiol benzoate (2 mg, i.m.) at the time of device insertion, prostaglandin F2alpha (25 mg, i.m.) at the time of device removal, and estradiol benzoate (1 mg, i.m.) 30 h after device removal. All cows were inseminated 28 to 30 h after the second treatment with estradiol benzoate, regardless of observed estrus. Cows treated in Period 1 received inserts at 16 to 20 d postpartum and were inseminated at 25 to 29 d postpartum. Cows treated in Period 2 received inserts at 26 to 30 d postpartum and were inseminated at 35 to 39 d postpartum. Diameter of the largest follicle at insert removal was greater in cows treated in Period 2 (10.1 +/- 0.3; mm +/- SEM) than in cows treated in Period 1 (9.1 +/- 0.3; P < .05). Diameter did not differ with the side of ovulation in respect to the previously gravid uterine horn. Diameter was greater in cows 5 to 9 (10.3 +/- 0.3) than in cows 3 to 4 (9.0 +/- 0.3) or 10 to 13 (9.4 +/- 0.6) yr of age (P < .01). The proportion of cows that ovulated from the ovary contralateral to the previously gravid uterine horn was greater (P < .05) than of those that ovulated from the ipsilateral ovary, and the incidence of ovulation was reduced in cows 3 to 4 yr of age (P < .01). Conception rate tended to be greater for ovulation from the ipsilateral compared with the contralateral ovary, relative to the previously gravid uterine horn (P < .10) and for ovulation from the right than the left ovary (P < .06). Conception rate was less if cows ovulated a follicle that was < 9 mm than a follicle > or = 9 mm in diameter at insert removal (P < .01) and was greater in cows inseminated in June than in April or May (P < .05). In conclusion, in cows in which estrus was synchronized at 25 to 39 d postpartum, ovulation from either the ovary ipsilateral to the previously gravid uterine horn, or the right ovary, tended to increase fertility.  相似文献
