Nitrogen fertilizer was applied at 0, 30,60 and 90 kg N ha-1 in March 1976, 1977 and 1978 to plots containing perennial ryegrass cv. Barlenna sown either alone or with white clover cv. Blanca, Sabeda, Olwen and S100 in four replicated blocks.
Dry matter (DM) yield of all swards responded positively to N with the response being highest in the no-clover swards in two of the three years. Annual DM yields were lower in the no-clover than in the mixed swards at any given N level. The higher levels of N reduced DM yield in mixed swards at some harvests in midsummer.
Swards of S100 were consistently among the lower yielding mixed swards, whereas the other three clover cultivars varied in their relative yields. There were no N x cultivar interactions for white clover yields; irrespective of cultivar, N application reduced annual white clover yield by similar amounts.
It is concluded that it is beneficial to apply moderate amounts of N fertilizer to mixed swards in spring and that under these conditions the yield differences between swards including medium-large and smaller leaved white clover cultivars are similar to differences between the inherent yield potential of these cultivars in mixed swards receiving no N.  相似文献

An experiment was set up to measure the production from donally propagated micro-swards of four contrasting ryegrass genotypes, grown in monocultures and in all possible combinations of mixed cultures consisting of two, three and all four genotypes. Water and nutrients were supplied frequently in non-limiting quantities and the swards were subjected to two cutting frequencies. The yield ranking of the monocultures and mixed cultures diifered at the two cutting frequencies. Under infrequent cutting, though not under frequent cutting, two mixtures, each containing two genotypes, were more productive than their highest yielding components in monoculture. The physiological basis of this apparent synergy is hriefly discussed and it is suggested that the increased yield may he due to more efficient light utilization hy the mixtures. In general, yields of other mixtures, including those consisting of 3 or 4 genotypes were intermediate between the highest and lowest yielding components in monoculture. The agronomic and plant-breeding implications of the results are discussed.  相似文献

Three experiments (2a, 2b and 2c) were carried out to examine the effects of different grazing intensities imposed during spring on subsequent herbage composition and milk production measured in summer.
Increased intensity of grazing imposed during spring (including the period of reproductive development in ryegrasses) produced swards in early summer with lower pre-grazing herbage masses, which contained higher concentrations of green leaf, clover and digestible nutrients, but lower concentrations of grass stem and senescent material.
In the first and second experiment cows were given a common daily allowance of total herbage dry matter (DM). The cows grazing on low-mass swards in early summer produced larger daily yields of milk, fat and protein than those grazing on the high-mass swards.
In the third experiment, cows were given a common daily allowance of green leaf DM from three swards which differed in pre-grazing herbage mass and in herbage composition. The allowances of total DM required differed widely between the treatments. There were no significant differences in milk yields between the swards despite the large differences in herbage composition.
The practical implications of these results are discussed.  相似文献

The productivity of permanent swards of mixed species composition was compared with that of sown Lolium perenne , cv. Melle at five fertilizer-N rates (0, 150, 300, 450 and 900 kg N ha−1) and with L. perenne/Trifolium repens , cv. Grasslands Huia at 0 kg N ha−1. The investigation was conducted under two cutting frequencies at sixteen sites in England and Wales, representing a range of grassland environments.
Annual total herbage dry matter (DM) production from both permanent and reseeded swards increased with successive increments of fertilizer-N up to 450 kg N ha−1. Herbage DM production from reseeded swards in the first year after sowing was signficantly higher than from the permanent swards, at all fertilizer-N treatments. In subsequent years the production advantage of the L. perenne reseeds was maintained only at the higher N rates, though sown L. perenne/T. repens was the most productive sward type at 0 N. Average differences in modified acid-detergent fibre suggested small advantages in herbage quality to the reseeded swards.
It is concluded that, while reseeded swards are more productive in the year after sowing, many permanent swards are capable of high levels of production and that reseeding to a L. perenne sward cannot always be justified, particularly for grassland receiving low or moderate inputs of fertilizer-N.  相似文献

Two experiments (1a and 1b) were carried out to examine the effects of differences in pre-grazing herbage mass and composition on milk production by cows grazing in early spring. Swards with high (5 · 1t DM ha−1) or low (2 · 9 t DM ha-1) pre-grazing masses in early spring were created by either long or short periods of regrowth during the preceding winter.
The low-mass swards contained lower concentrations of grass stem and senescent material, but higher concentrations of clover, than the high-mass swards. Herbage from the low-mass swards was also more digestible.
Cows were offered common daily herbage allowances from both swards (26 and 22 kg DM cow−1 in Experiments la and lb respectively). The cows grazing on the low-mass swards produced significantly greater yields of milk, milk fat and milk protein.
The results show that herbage from the lowmass swards was of higher feeding value for lactating cows in early lactation. The practical implications for milk production per cow and per hectare are discussed.  相似文献

A field-study was undertaken in Hamilton, New Zealand to determine if there was an interaction between water-soluble carbohydrate (WSC) reserve content and defoliation severity on the regrowth of perennial ryegrass-dominant swards during winter. Perennial ryegrass plants with either low or high WSC content were obtained by varying the defoliation frequency. At the third defoliation at the one-leaf stage and at the first defoliation at the three-leaf stage (harvest H1), swards were mown with a rotary lawnmower to residual stubble heights of 20, 40 or 60 mm. All swards were then allowed to regrow to the three-leaf stage before again defoliating to their treatment residual stubble heights (H2). Frequently defoliated plants contained proportionately between 0·37 and 0·48 less WSC in the stubble after defoliation, depending on the severity of defoliation. There was no interaction between WSC content and defoliation severity for herbage regrowth between harvests H1 and H2. Herbage regrowth was lower from swards containing low WSC plants compared with high WSC plants (2279 vs. 2007 kg DM ha−1). Furthermore, swards defoliated to 20 or 40 mm had greater herbage regrowth compared with those defoliated to 60 mm (2266, 2249 and 1914 kg DM ha−1 for swards defoliated to residual stubble heights of 20, 40 and 60 mm, respectively). Regrowth of perennial ryegrass was positively correlated with post-defoliation stubble WSC content within defoliation severity treatment, implying that WSC contributed to the defoliation frequency-derived difference in herbage yield. However, the effect of defoliation severity on herbage regrowth was not associated with post-defoliation stubble WSC content.  相似文献

Four intermediate‐heading perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) varieties, which in previous studies had been associated with high‐ or low‐intake characteristics when swards containing them had been continuously stocked with sheep, were sown as monocultures. They were rotationally grazed, using 1‐d paddocks, with core groups of four yearling Simmental × Holstein beef heifers in 2002 and 2003 and ingestive and ruminative behaviour, and sward factors, were measured. There were two diploid (Belramo and Glen) and one tetraploid (Rosalin) perennial ryegrass varieties and one tetraploid hybrid (Lolium × boucheanum Kunth) (AberExcel) variety. Intake rate (IR) was significantly higher in August 2003 for heifers grazing Glen than those grazing Belramo [27·5 vs. 20·6 g dry matter (DM) min?1; P = 0·019], but there were no significant differences between varieties in two other measurement periods. This is in contrast to previous results with sheep when IR were significantly higher for Glen than Belramo and for AberExcel than Rosalin. Total jaw movement rates during grazing were significantly higher for heifers on the tetraploid swards than those on the diploid swards (87·7 vs. 83·6 jaw movements min?1; P = 0·023) in September 2002. Ruminating time was significantly lower for heifers on the tetraploid swards than those on the diploid swards (453 vs. 519 min 24 h?1; P = 0·012) in July 2002. Digestibility of grass snips was significantly higher on the tetraploid than the diploid swards [697 vs. 680 g digestible organic matter (DOM) kg?1 DM; P = 0·042] in September 2003 and, within diploids, was significantly higher for Glen than Belramo (696 vs. 663 g DOM kg?1 DM; P = 0·014). There were significant differences in sheath tube and leaf lengths and in the population density of tillers between and within ploidies, which might have been expected to have influenced intake characteristics, but this was not generally found under rotational grazing with cattle. In order to separate the effects of defoliation interval from those of grazing style of the different ruminant species, it is suggested that grass variety evaluations using continuously stocked cattle swards are required.  相似文献

The seasonal patterns of dry-matter (DM) production by swards of Norwegian grasses originating from high latitudes >61°N ( Dactylis glomerata Hattfjelldal, Phleum pratense Engmo and Poa pratensis Leikra) were compared over 2 years (1986 and 1987) with those of grasses developed at lower latitudes, 52°N ( Dactylis glomerata Cambria, Phleum pratense Motim and Lolium perenne Perma) at a lowland site in southwest Scotland (55.5°N, altitude 45 m). In each year, there was a significant enhancement of the DM production of the high-latitude varieties of Dactylis glomerata, Phleum pratense and Poa pratensis at harvests during May and June, although the lower latitude grasses gave a higher proportion of annual production than the Norwegian grasses in April and from September onwards. These findings are compatible with the observed stimulation of DM production of high-latitude grasses by daylength extension under controlled conditions. However, since the stimulation of DM production did not occur until the normal peak of production in May and June, it served to accentuate the skewed distribution of production in Scotland, rather than to improve production earlier in the season. Since the total annual DM production was significantly lower for the high-latitude grasses in general at the lowland site, there does not appear to be a clear role for these grasses in UK agriculture.  相似文献

High (H; 27 350 m?1:) or low (L. 13 300 m-1) tiller density perennial ryegrass swards were created in the mid- and late grazing season by imposing different sward heights in the spring. Summer-calving cows then grazed these swards from 6 June to 2 September 1992 and were offered 5 kg fresh weight hd?1 d?1 of either a barley (S) or a molassed sugar beet pulp (F) based supplement. The factorial combination of sward and supplement types resulted in four experimental swards being grazed by thirteen Holstein/Friesian cows each. Supplement F contained more crude fibre (110 vs. 58 g kg?1) and less metabolizable energy [12–5 vs. 13–2 MJ kg?1 dry matter (DM)] than supplement S. Herbage on the H sward contained more metabolizable energy (11–9 vs. 104 MJ kg?1 DM) and crude protein (232 vs. 205 g kg?1 DM), had fewer rejected areas f 16–5 vs. 26–9%) and a higher live-dead tiller ratio (4–6 vs. 2–1) than that on the L sward. Sward, but not supplement type, significantly affected the intake of grazed herbage (P<0–001). On average, the herbage intakes of cows grazing II swards were higher than for L swards (14–5 vs. 11 6kg DM d?1) and those of cows on the S and F supplements were 12–6 and 13–5 kg DM d?1 respectively. Averaged over the grazing period, sward and supplement had no significant effects on milk yield, milk composition or yield of constituents. When expressed on an average weekly basis, cows grazing an L sward and offered the F supplement on occasions had significantly lower milk yields and higher milk fat contents (P<005) than those grazing an H sward and offered the S supplement. There were no significant effects on cow live weight or condition score change. The results suggested that grazing swards with a high density of live tillers increased herbage intakes and on occasions milk yield, relative to low density swards. However, small increases in energy intake from sward and supplement effects were used primarily to ameliorate liveweight loss.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between level of sward height reduction (SHR) and short-term intake of herbage by lactating dairy cows offered swards differing in initial bulk density (BD). Three experiments were carried out in which cows were presented with swards representing different levels of SHR (nominally described as ungrazed, low, moderate and high). Experiments 1 and 2 differed with respect to initial sward BD [ungrazed sward 1·7 vs. 2·5 kg dry matter (DM) m?3 respectively]. Experiment 3 investigated the interaction between BD and SHR. In each experiment, sixteen Holstein/Friesian cows (fitted with excreta collection bags) grazed for a 1-h period in 200-m2 plots that had been grazed on the previous day to predetermined sward surface heights (SSH) (= levels of SHR). Herbage intake rates were assessed from changes in live weight, with a correction for insensible weight loss (IWL). Biting rates were recorded from visual observation. High levels of SHR were associated with a significant reduction in SSH, herbage mass and leaf fraction, and a significant increase in sward BD, stem and dead fraction, and DM concentration. Herbage intake, expressed either as DM intake per bite or DM intake per hour, declined as level of SHR increased from low to high. The level of SHR generally had no effect on biting rate. Intake rates varied from 1·9 to 4·4 kg DM h?1, whereas DM intake bite?1 ranged from 0·5 to 1·3 g. Pooled regression analysis identified SSH (P < 0·001; r2 = 0·94) as the principal determinant of DM intake bite?1. The regression equation was not significantly improved by the addition of terms for leaf fraction, BD, or herbage mass. In Experiment 3, a significant interaction between level of SHR and sward BD was observed. It is concluded that the principal factor controlling intake (g DM bite?1 or kg DM h?1), as swards are progressively grazed down, is SSH, but at a high level of SHR, sward BD also influences intake bite?1.  相似文献

Extending the grazing season through the production and utilization of high‐quality forage is a key objective in grassland‐based dairy production systems. Grazing swards to a low post‐grazing sward height (PGSH) is a strategy for improving grass utilization. A grazing experiment conducted in Ireland investigated immediate and subsequent effects of PGSH on sward production, utilization and structural characteristics. Swards were grazed to 2·7 cm (severe; S1) or 3·5 cm (moderate; M1) from 10 February to 18 April 2010 (Period 1; P1). From 19 April, each P1 paddock was halved and grazed to either 3·8 cm (S2) or 4·8 cm (M2), until 30 October (Period 2; P2). The first grazing rotation was +7 d on S1 swards compared with M1 swards (45 d), due to greater herbage utilization (+0·22). Herbage production during P1 was not affected by PGSH but a severe PGSH during this period reduced subsequent herbage production: 13·9 (S1) vs. 15·5 t dry matter (DM) ha?1 (M1) by the end of the study. Leaf proportion was increased (+0·10) on S2 swards compared with M2 swards, but M2 swards produced 1·2 t DM ha?1 more herbage during P2. Despite the relatively lower level of sward utilization obtained from moderate grazing in P1 (3·5 cm) and P2 (4·5–5·0 cm), such levels of PGSH increased DM production while maintaining sward quality, compared with severe grazing (2·7 cm in P1 and 3·5–4·0 cm in P2).  相似文献

Persistence assessments on eight mid-season and ten late cultivars of perennial ryegrass were made at the end of the second, third and fourth years after sowing. Botanical analyses were carried out on the herbage from plots cut in the fourth year and these results related lo the different persistence assessments. It was found that persistence assessments carried out at the end of the second year enabled predictions to be made about botanical composition of cuitivars in the fourth year. Little extra precision was gained by delaying assessment until the third or fourth years as the ranking order of cultivars with respect to persistence remained largely unchanged. All persistence assessments were positively correlated with yields of sown cultivars and negatively correlated with yields of unsown herbage species in the fourth year. However, only low correlation coefficients were obtained between persistence assessments and the total yield of sown cultivar and unsown species in the fourth year, due to yield substitution between these two components. In swards sown as monocultures low persistence in a cultivar is considered to be a lack of perenniality and tiller regeneration rather than poor competitive ability against volunteer species though in mixed swards competitive ability per se will have considerable influence upon the changes in botanical composition under different managements. Persistence and yield capacity are seen, however, as distinct characteristics of a cuitivar and long-term yield potential is a joint function of these characteristics.  相似文献

Two experimental populations of Italian ryegrass selected for high and low magnesium content were established as swards, harvested fresh daily and offered to sheep. Chemical analysis of the crops showed a 44% higher Mg and a 22% higher Ca concentration in the high-Mg selection but no significant differences between the selections for the other minerals.
Blood and rumen contents were sampled throughout the feeding period and voluntary intake, digestibility and mineral balances for Na, K, Mg, Ca and P were determined. Magnesium intake, apparent availability and retention were significantly greater with the high-Mg selection. There were no significant differences in the plasma-mineral concentrations and all were within the normal range. Rumen fluid from animals fed the high-Mg selection had a higher proportion of soluble Mg and a higher Na:K ratio in the supernatant liquor.  相似文献

The production performance of herbage‐fed animals is affected by herbage voluntary dry‐matter intake (VDMI) and organic matter digestibility. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of herbage mass (HM) on in vivo herbage voluntary intake and digestibility in sheep. The three HM treatments were as follows: 1,100 kg dry matter (DM)/ha (low, L), 2,300 kg DM/ha (medium, M) and 3,700 kg DM/ha (high, H). The study was a Latin square design, repeated on two occasions in 2012: 24 May to 20 July (summer) and 21 July to 5 October (autumn). Twelve Texel wether sheep (individually housed) were offered fresh cut perennial ryegrass herbage for ad libitum consumption. Using the total faecal collection method, the digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, neutral detergent fibre and acid detergent fibre was determined. In summer, L had a similar VDMI to M and both had a higher VDMI than H. In autumn, L had a higher VDMI than both M and H. For dry‐matter digestibility and organic matter digestibility, there was no significant difference between L and M, which were both higher than H. For every 1% increase in neutral detergent fibre digestibility, VDMI increased by 0.03 kg. In the zero‐grazing scenario examined, offering low (1,100 kg DM/ha) HM swards enabled animals to achieve high intakes of highly digestible herbage, which should ensure high animal production performance.  相似文献

Dry matter (DM) production of multispecies swards compared to perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne; PRG) swards under intensive grazing warrants investigation as it is relatively unknown. A 5 × 2 factorial experiment, with five sward types and two defoliation methods, was used to investigate the effect of grazing versus cutting on dry matter (DM) production of multispecies and PRG‐only swards. Five sward types were established namely: a PRG‐only sward, receiving 250 kg N ha?1 year?1 (PRG250), and a PRG‐only sward (PRG90), a two‐species sward with PRG and white clover (Trifolium repens; PRGWC), a six‐species sward (6S) and a nine‐species sward (9S), each receiving 90 kg N ha?1 year?1. Cutting plots measured 1.95 × 10 m and grazing plots measured 10 × 10 m. All plots were harvested concurrently every 21–30 days from April‐November for two years (2015 and 2016). A strip from the grazing plots was cut for DM yield determination prior to turning in cattle for grazing. There was an interaction between sward type and defoliation method (p < .01), whereby there was no effect of defoliation method on the PRG‐only swards, however, the annual DM production of PRGWC, 6S and 9S swards reduced under grazing compared to cutting (p < .001; on average 1,929 kg DM/ha lower). Multispecies swards had lower DM production under grazing compared to cutting, while the DM yield of PRG‐only swards was unaffected by defoliation method.  相似文献

Results for years 4–8 of a long-term grazing experiment on swards of a diploid perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne), var. Contender (D swards), a tetraploid ryegrass, var. Condesa (T swards) and Condesa with S184 white clover (Trifolium repens) (TC swards), direct sown in May 1987, are presented. The swards were continuously stocked with sheep from 1988 to 1990, as previously reported, and for a further 5 years, 1991–95, at a target sward surface height (SSH) of 4–6 cm. Control of sward height was successfully achieved by variable stocking, except in 1993 when paddocks were set stocked and the resulting mean SSH was 9·3 cm. Grass swards received on average 160 kg N ha?1 year?1; grass/clover swards were mainly not fertilized with N with the exception that they were given 30 kg N ha?1 as a remedial mid-summer application during a period of low herbage mass on offer in 1994 and 1995. Mean white clover content of the swards fell from 18·2% of herbage dry-matter (DM) in 1992 to 8·5% in 1993, whereas stolon lengths fell from 120 to 58 m m?2. A return to lower sward heights in 1994–95 resulted in an increase in white clover content to 12·8% by the final sampling in August 1995. Perennial ryegrass content of the grass swards remained high throughout (mean 96·7% in 1995). Perennial ryegrass tiller densities recorded in August 1991, 1993 and 1994 showed consistently significant (P < 0·001) sward differences (3-year mean 16 600, 13 700 and 10 100 perennial ryegrass tillers m?2 for the D, T and TC swards). In 1994, the year after lax grazing, a low perennial ryegrass tiller density (9100 m?2) and low white clover content (mean 4·3%) in the TC swards resulted in a much lower herbage bulk density than in the grass swards (April–July means 72, 94 and 44 kg OM ha?1 cm?1 for the D, T and TC swards). There was a consistent 40 g d?1 increase in lamb liveweight gain on the TC swards over the T swards, except in 1994. In that year there was a reduction in lamb liveweight gain of 33 g d?1 on the TC swards and a significant increase in ewe liveweight loss (117 g d?1) associated with low herbage bulk density despite optimal sward height. Lamb output (kg liveweight ha?1) on TC swards reflected white clover content, falling from a similar output to that produced from grass given 160 kg N ha?1, at 18% white clover DM content, down to 60% of grass + N swards with around 5% clover. A 6% greater output from the T than the D swards was achieved mainly through higher stocking rate. The experiment demonstrated a rapid, loss in white clover under lax grazing, and showed that the relationship between performance and sward height is also dependent on herbage density. High lamb output from a grass/clover sward was only achieved when the clover content was maintained at 15–20% of the herbage DM.  相似文献

The effect of sowing date (SD) and sowing rate of perennial ryegrass (PRG) on the establishment of Caucasian and white clovers in New Zealand was assessed. Clovers were sown in spring on 24 September (SD1) and 9 November (SD2) 1999, and in autumn on 4 February (SD3) and 31 March (SD4) 2000. On each date, clovers were sown with 0, 3, 6 or 12 kg ha?1 of PRG. Total herbage dry matter (DM) production up to 6 November 2000 was 13–16 t DM ha?1 for SD1 and SD2 when sown with 3–12 kg ha?1 of PRG, and 7–10 t DM ha?1 for sown clover monocultures. For SD3 and SD4, total herbage production was 6–9 t DM ha?1 with PRG, while total herbage production of clover monocultures was 5·4 t DM ha?1 for SD3 and 2·6 t DM ha?1 for SD4. By 6 November 2000, white clover contributed proportionately more than 0·15 of herbage mass when sown with 3–12 kg ha?1 of PRG on SD1, SD2 or SD3, but less than 0·09 when sown on SD4. The proportion of Caucasian clover never exceeded 0·09 of herbage mass in any of the swards. White clover was successfully established in spring and in autumn with 3–12 kg ha?1 of PRG provided the 15‐mm soil temperature was above 14 °C. None of the combinations of Caucasian clover and PRG provided an adequate proportion of legumes during the establishment year. This unsuccessful establishment of Caucasian clover with PRG was attributed to its inability to compete for available light as a seedling due to slow leaf area expansion from secondary shoot development and a high root:shoot ratio. Alternative establishment strategies for Caucasian clover may include the use of slow establishing grasses, cover crops and temporal species separation.  相似文献

Cutting patterns producing high and low areas were imposed on swards of Dactylis glomerata and Lolium perenne to test whether output could be increased when compared with traditional uniform cutting methods. In two experiments, swards of both grasses were divided into parallel 9 cm strips which were cut alternately on different occasions to a height of 5 cm. These swards yielded a similar quantity of herbage DM to that from other swards cut uniformly at the same height and frequency. In a third experiment, swards of Lolium perenne were divided into alternate strips of unequal width (9 and 4.5 cm). The narrow strips were allowed to grow to a height of 15 cm and were occasionally trimmed at this height. The wide strips were cut to 5 cm at 2–or 4–weekly intervals. Areas cut to 5 cm every 2 weeks yielded significantly more DM when adjacent to high areas than when adjacent to areas cut to 5 cm every 2 weeks (i.e. under uniform cutting). The interaction between adjacent areas having different defoliation regimes is discussed in relation to the possibility of obtaining some additional output from a suitable no niform cutting system compared with uniform cutting. Sward productivity under no niform grazing patterns of livestock is also discussed.  相似文献

Growth of grass herbage in Ireland is highly seasonal with little or no net growth from November to February. As a result, feed demand exceeds grass supply during late autumn, winter and early spring. At low stocking rates [≤2 livestock units (LU) ha?1], there is potential to defer some of the herbage grown in autumn to support winter grazing. This study examined the effects of four autumn‐closing dates and four winter‐grazing dates in successive years on the accumulation of herbage mass and on tiller density in winter and subsequent herbage production at two sites in Ireland, one in the south and one in the north‐east. Closing swards from grazing in early and mid‐September (north‐east and south of Ireland respectively) provided swards with >2 t DM ha?1 and a proportion of green leaf >0·65–0·70 of the herbage mass above 4 cm, with a crude protein (CP) concentration of >230 g kg?1 DM and dry matter digestibility (DMD) of >0·700. The effects of autumn‐closing date and winter‐grazing date on herbage production in the subsequent year varied between the two sites. There was no significant effect of autumn‐closing date in the north‐eastern site whereas in the south earlier autumn closing reduced the herbage mass in late March by up to 0·34 t DM ha?1 and delaying winter grazing reduced the herbage mass in late March by up to 0·85 t DM ha?1. The effects of later grazing dates in winter on herbage mass continued into the summer at the southern site, reducing the herbage mass for the period from late March to July by up to 2 t DM ha?1. The effects of imposing treatments in successive years did not follow a consistent pattern and year‐to‐year variation was most likely linked to meteorological conditions.  相似文献

The productivity of a mixed sward comprising perennial ryegrass cv. Fantoom and white clover cv. Aran was measured under eight defoliation management systems and two fertilizer N rates (0 and 75 kg ha-1) applied in spring. The defoliations involved a basic six-harvest simulated grazing system together with the interposition of silage cuts once or twice at varying times during the growing season; evaluation was made over three harvest years, 1983-85. Mean annual production of total herbage DM over the three years was 8.351 tha-1 without N and 9.49 tha-1 with 75 kg N ha-1, a mean response of 15.2 kg DM per kg applied N. The responses for individual treatments occurred mainly at the first cuts, whether for simulated grazing (a mean of 12 9 kg DM) or for silage (a mean of 259 kg DM); however, this influence of spring N was not sustained at other cuts over the season. Mean annual white clover DM production was 4.19 t ha-1 with no N and 3.32 t ha-1 with 75 kg ha-1 N, but the reduction due to N was not significant in any year. The mean amount of clover stolon DM present post harvest over all management systems was 1.33 t ha-1 with no N and 1.03 t ha-1 with 75 kg ha-1 N. Mean annual DM production of total herbage from the six-harvest system was 8.11 t ha-1 Compared with 8 88 t ha-1 (a 9% increase) from the systems with one silage cut and 9.241 ha-1 (a 14% increase) from the systems with two silage cuts. Corresponding white clover DM production was 4.02, 3 87 and 3 53 t ha-1, respectively, and mean stolon DM amounts post harvest, 1 12,1.15 and 1-23 t ha-1, respectively. It is concluded that grass/white clover swards are suitable for management systems which involve cutting for conservation. Spring N application did not greatly reduce white clover production in this experiment where white clover was at higher levels than are likely in farming practice and the swards were not grazed. More knowledge of spring N rates, and indeed of N application rates generally, would be advantageous in future assessment of silage cutting systems.  相似文献
