Postnatal development of the brain stem auditory-evoked potential in dogs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Recordings of averaged brain stem auditory-evoked potentials were obtained from 13 Beagle pups of both genders to document the postnatal development of the response from age 1 to 76 days. Responses were recorded between needle electrodes placed on the vertex and the ipsilateral ear, with ground at the interorbital line. Recordings were performed without sedation. Low-amplitude responses to high-intensity stimuli could be recorded from animals prior to opening of the ear canals. Peak latencies did not change after day 20 for peak I, day 30 for peaks II and III, and day 40 for peak V. As a result, the interpeak latencies between peaks I and III did not change after day 30, but continued to decrease until day 40 for peaks III-V and I-V. Peak amplitudes reached plateau values by day 20 (peak I) or day 30 (peaks II, III, and V). All of the measured latency and amplitude values had significant (P less than 0.001) linear regression lines of latency vs age and amplitude vs age. The brain stem auditory-evoked potential thresholds were mature by day 20.  相似文献

Effects of analog filter frequency on brain stem auditory-evoked potentials (BAEP) were investigated in 7 non-sedated dogs. The BAEP were recorded successively at various low-pass (LP) and high-pass (HP) filter frequency settings. The analog filters had a rolloff of 6 dB/octave. Decrease of LP filter frequency from 30 kHz to 100 Hz caused prolongation of the peak latency and reduction of the peak-to-peak (from a positive peak to the following trough) and absolute (from a positive peak to the baseline) amplitudes for all peaks, except the peak latency for P5 and the absolute amplitude for P4. Changes in these variables were statistically significant (P less than 0.05) at different cutoff frequencies specific for the individual peaks. The interpeak latency between P1 and P4, and P4/P1 peak-to-peak amplitude ratio were not changed significantly. At the lowest LP filter frequency of 100 Hz, positive peaks (fast waves) seemed to be superimposed on a slow positive wave (slow wave). In contrast, increase of HP filter frequency from 0.53 to 160 Hz did not result in significant changes for any peaks, except for reduction in the absolute amplitude of P4. The various effects of LP filter frequency and negligible effects of HP filter frequency on individual peaks may be attributable to their frequency composition and/or elimination of the slow wave at higher HP filter frequency settings. On the basis of our results, LP filter setting of 3 kHz and HP filter setting of less than or equal to 53 Hz are recommended for recording of BAEP in dogs.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

We have analysed the systematic influences, phenotypic colour markers and the additive genetic variation for congenital sensorineural deafness (CSD) in German Dalmatian dogs in order to help elucidate the importance of phenotypic breed characteristics for genetic differences of CSD. Linear animal models using restricted maximum likelihood methods were employed to estimate variance components. Data were obtained from all three German Dalmatian kennel clubs associated with the German Association for Dog Breeding and Husbandry (VDH). CSD was recorded by standardized protocols for brainstem auditory-evoked response (BAER). The material included 1899 German Dalmatian dogs from 354 litters in 169 different kennels. BAER testing results were from the years 1986 to 1999. Pedigree information was available for up to seven generations. The animal model regarded the fixed effects of sex, coat colour, eye colour, presence of patches, litter size, percentage of examined puppies per litter, kennel club, and inbreeding coefficient. The common environment of the litter and kennel as well as the additive genetic effect of the animal were taken into account as randomly distributed effects. The fixed effects of eye colour, percentage of puppies examined per litter and kennel club were significant in the mixed model analysis. A significant proportion of additive genetic variation could be shown despite corrections for phenotypic colour variants. The heritability estimate for CSD in German Dalmatian dogs was h(2)=0.27+/-0.07. The additive genetic correlation of CSD with presence of blue eyes was r(g)=0.53+/-0.41 and with presence of patches r(g)=-0.36+/-0.24. We concluded that additional genes other than those associated with phenotypic colour markers in German Dalmatian dogs significantly contribute to the occurrence of CSD.  相似文献

Brain stem auditory-evoked responses were recorded in 9 male and 11 female clinically normal mature dogs, weighing between 2 and 36 kg. Mean wave latency for the entire group of dogs, using 60-dB hearing level click stimuli at 11/s for waves I to VII was: 1.41, 2.21, 2.85, 3.31, 3.71, 5.12, and 6.46 ms, respectively. The mean interpeak latency for waves I and V (IPLIV) was 2.32 ms. Neither gender nor ear effect was detectable. Positive correlation was observed between cranium length, cranium width, nasion-external auditory meatus interval, and body weight for wave-V latency and IPLIV. Such correlation was not documented for wave I. The regression equations for their effects on IPLIV were: cranium length, y = 0.05x + 1.85; cranium width, y = 0.07x + 1.32; nasion-external auditory meatus interval, y = 0.05x + 1.79; and body weight, y = 0.01x + 2.15. On the basis of any of the 3 variables of cranium size or body weight, the study population could be classified into groups of large and small dogs, with the large group having significantly (P less than 0.05) longer latency for wave V and IPLIV. It is recommended that the effect of size variation in dogs on brain stem auditory-evoked responses should be compensated for by use of the regression equation based on cranium length.  相似文献

The brain stem auditory evoked-response was measured from a group of 24 healthy dogs under conditions suitable for clinical diagnostic use. The waveforms were identified, and analysis of amplitude ratios, latencies, and interpeak latencies were done. The group was subdivided into subgroups based on tranquilization, nontranquilization, sex, and weight. Differences were not observed among any of these subgroups. All dogs responded to the click stimulus from 30 dB to 90 dB, but only 62.5% of the dogs responded at 5 dB. The total number of peaks averaged 1.6 at 5 dB, increased linearly to 6.5 at 50 dB, and remained at 6.5 to 90 dB. Frequency of recognizability of each wave was tabulated for each stimulus intensity tested; recognizability increased with increased stimulus intensity. Amplitudes of waves increased with increasing stimulus intensity, but were highly variable. The 4th wave had the greatest amplitude at the lower stimulus intensities, and the 1st wave had the greatest amplitude at the higher stimulus intensities. Amplitude ratio of the 1st to 5th wave was greater than 1 at less than or equal to 50 dB stimulus intensity, and was 1 for stimulus intensities greater than 50 dB. Interpeak latencies did not change relative to stimulus intensities. Peak latencies of each wave averaged at 5-dB hearing level for the 1st to 6th waves were 2.03, 2.72, 3.23, 4.14, 4.41, and 6.05 ms, respectively; latencies of these 6 waves at 90 dB were 0.92, 1.79, 2.46, 3.03, 3.47, and 4.86 ms, respectively. ObjectiveTo evaluate the ability of transthoracic echocardiographic aortic flow measurements to discriminate response to a fluid challenge (FC) in healthy anesthetized dogs.Study designProspective experimental study.AnimalsA total of 48 isoflurane-anesthetized dogs (14.2–35.0 kg) undergoing elective surgery.MethodsFluid responsiveness was evaluated before surgery by FC (lactated Ringer’s 10 mL kg–1 intravenously over 5 minutes). Percentage increases in transpulmonary thermodilution stroke volume (ΔSVTPTD) >15% from values recorded before FC defined responders to volume expansion. A group of 24 animals were assigned as nonresponders (ΔSVTPTD ≤15%). When ΔSVTPTD was >15% after the first FC, additional FC were administered until ΔSVTPTD was ≤15%. Final fluid responsiveness status was based on the response to the last FC. Percentage increases after FC in aortic flow indexes [velocity time integral (ΔVTIFC) and maximum acceleration (ΔVmaxFC)] and in mean arterial pressure (ΔMAPFC) were compared with ΔSVTPTD.ResultsAfter one FC, 24 animals were responders. For nonresponders, ΔSVTPTD was ≤15% after one, two and three FCs in eight/24, 15/24 and one/24 animals, respectively. The FC that defined responsiveness increased ΔSVTPTD by 29 (18–53)% in responders and by 8 (–3 to 15)% in nonresponders [mean (range)]. The area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUROC) of ΔVTIFC (0.901) was larger than the AUROCs of ΔVmaxFC (0.774, p = 0.041) and ΔMAPFC (0.519, p < 0.0001). ΔMAPFC did not predict responsiveness (p = 0.826). Best cut-off thresholds for discriminating responders, with respective zones of diagnostic uncertainty (gray zones) were >14.7 (10.8–17.6)% for ΔVTIFC and >8.6 (–0.3 to 14.7)% for ΔVmaxFC. Animals within the gray zone were 17% (ΔVTIFC) and 50% (ΔVmaxFC).Conclusions and clinical relevanceChanges in VTI induced by FC can determine responsiveness with reasonable accuracy in dogs and could play an important role in goal-directed fluid therapy.  相似文献

The brain stem auditory-evoked response (BAER) was measured in 10 horses and 7 ponies under conditions suitable for clinical diagnostic testing. Latencies of 5 vertex-positive peaks and interpeak latency and amplitude ratio on the 1st and 4th peaks were determined. Data from horses and ponies were analyzed separately and were compared. The stimulus was a click (n = 3,000) ranging from 10- to 90-dB hearing level (HL). Neither horses nor ponies responded with a BAER at 10 dB nor did they give reliable responses at less than 50 dB. The 2nd of the BAER waves appeared in the record at lower stimulus intensities than did the 1st wave for the horse and pony. Horses and ponies had a decreasing latency for all waves, as a result of increasing stimulus intensity. Latencies were shorter for the ponies than for the horses at all stimulus intensities for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th waves, but not the 5th wave. At 60-dB HL, the mean latencies for the 1st through 5th wave, respectively, for the horse were 1.73, 3.08, 3.93, 4.98, and 6.00 ms and for the pony 1.48, 2.73, 3.50, 4.56, and 6.58 ms. Interpeak latencies, 1st to 4th wave, averaged 3.22 ms (horse) and 3.11 ms (pony) for all stimulus intensities from 50- to 90-dB HL and had a tendency to decrease slightly as stimulus intensity increased. Amplitude ratios (4th wave/1st wave) were less than 1 for all stimulus intensities in the horse. In the pony, the ratio was less than 1 at greater than or equal to 70-dB HL and greater than 1 at less than or equal to 60-dB HL.  相似文献

The acoustic reflex (AR) and brain stem auditory-evoked response (BAER) were recorded in adult cats 5 minutes after IM administration of xylazine (1 mg/kg) and after IM administration of ketamine (10 mg/kg). Ipsilateral and contralateral AR were recorded at 10 and 20 dB above acoustic reflex threshold 5 minutes after xylazine administration and 5 and 35 minutes after ketamine administration. Monaural BAER were recorded 5 minutes after xylazine and 5 and 35 minutes after ketamine, using stimulus intensities of 90-, 80-, and 70-dB hearing level (HL). Additional BAER were recorded at 10, 15, and 25 minutes after ketamine, using the 90-dB HL stimulus. Pre- and postinjection comparisons were made for threshold, latency, and amplitude of the AR and for latency and amplitude of waves I through VI of the BAER. At both stimulus intensities before and after ketamine administration threshold for the ipsilateral reflex was significantly lower (P greater than 0.05) than for the contralateral reflex. The threshold, latency, and amplitude of the AR were unaffected (P greater than 0.05) by the injection of ketamine after xylazine. The amplitude of BAER waves was not affected (P greater than 0.05) by ketamine after xylazine for each of the 3 stimulus intensities. Latency of the 90-dB HL-evoked response was increased (P less than or equal to 0.05) for waves III/IV at 5 and 35 minutes after ketamine, and for wave V at each of the postinjection times, except at postinjection minute 15.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Genetic predisposition to purine uroliths in Dalmatian dogs   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Homozygosity for a defective recessive gene results in all Dalmatians having elevated concentrations of urine uric acid and predisposes them to formation of purine uroliths. Why some animals form uroliths and others do not is not known. In a pilot breeding experiment, the incidence of sensorineural deafness among backcrossed, high urine uric acid Dalmatians was significantly higher (probability less than 0.05) than among low urine uric acid siblings. Urine uric acid values for Dalmatians reported in the literature are not likely to be comparable, because uric acid appears to be more likely to precipitate in Dalmatian urine than in the urine of other dogs and man. Heating, alkalinization, and thorough mixing are required whenever specimens are transferred from one container to another or an aliquot is removed for assay.  相似文献

The pharmacokinetics of allopurinol were studied in Dalmatian dogs. Eight dogs were given allopurinol orally at a dose of 10 mg/kg for seven doses prior to sample collection. After a period of at least two weeks, four of these dogs and four additional Dalmatians were later given a single intravenous (i.v.) dose of allopurinol (6 mg/kg) prior to sample collection.Allopurinol was found to follow first-order absorption and elimination kinetics. In the i.v. kinetic study, the elimination constant (Kel) = 0.31±0.03 per h, the half-life (t½) = 2.22±0.20 h, the initial concentration (C0) = 5.26±0.34 μg/mL and the specific volume (Vd) = 1.14±0.07 L/kg. Clearance of allopurinol was estimated to be 0.36±0.03 L/kg·h. In the oral kinetic study, the absorption rate constant (Kab) = 1.06±0.13 per h, the elimination rate constant (Kel) = 0.26±0.01 per h, the absorption half-life (t½ab) = 0.66±0.06 h, and the elimination half-life (t½el) = 2.69±0.14 h. Peak plasma concentrations (Cmax) = 6.43±0.18 μg/mL were obtained within 1 to 3 h (mean time of maximum concentration (Tmax) = 1.9±0.1 h). The volume of distribution corrected by the fraction of dose absorbed (Vd/F) was estimated to be 1.17±0.07 L/kg.Good agreement was obtained between mean kinetic parameters in the oral and i.v. studies. There was little variation between individual dogs in the i.v. study, whereas the rate of absorption and elimination of orally administered allopurinol was more varied among individual dogs. Because of this, and the fact that the magnitude of hyperuricosuria varies among Dalmatians, it is not possible to specify an exact dose of allopurinol that will effectively lower the urinary uric acid concentration to acceptable values in all Dalmatians with hyperuricosuria; rather, the dose must be titrated to the needs of each dog.  相似文献

Wave forms of canine brain stem auditory-evoked potentials (BAEP) and the effects of electrode positions on the wave forms were studied as a basis for experimental and clinical use of BAEP recording. The BAEP regularly consisted of 5 waves (I to V) with latencies and polarities similar to those of other species. In some dogs, waves II, III, and IV contained distinct subpeaks (a, b, c). Waves similar to waves VI and VII of other species were recorded in some dogs. With respect to BAEP, no site on the head was electrically inactive and BAEP could be recorded as far caudally as the caudal cervical region in some dogs. Wave I, positive in recordings from the dorsal midline of the calvaria (vertex) underwent polarity reversal and increased amplitude and duration in recordings made from caudal ventrolateral regions of the head (mastoid region). As a result, wave I partially or totally obscured wave II so that the latter could no longer be clearly identified. Waves IIIa and IIIb were differentially affected by moving the recording site, indicating that their generators were spatially separated. Waves IV and V were also affected by electrode site, consistent with previous reports that they have spatially separated generators in other species. In recordings made with vertex electrodes referenced to the mastoid region ipsilateral to the stimulated ear, wave I appeared as a high-amplitude positive peak with onset latency equalling that in noncephalic reference recordings, but with somewhat later peak latency and longer duration. As a result, wave II was partially or totally obscured so that only 4 major peaks were evident in the BAEP. In contralateral mastoid reference recordings, latency to peak of wave I was unchanged; however, amplitude of all waves was reduced and waves IIa and IIb were not as clearly differentiated as they were in noncephalic reference recordings.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To develop a safe neurosurgical procedure that accessed the ventral pons and medulla of the dog primarily for the removal of brain stem neoplasms. STUDY DESIGN: In vivo study. METHODS: A cadaver study was performed on mesocephalic dog heads to develop a neurosurgical approach to the ventral brain stem. Based on this study, an approach to the ventral brain stem was developed by basioccipital craniectomy. This procedure was performed on 4 young neurologically normal Beagle dogs to assess morbidity and mortality associated with the procedure. Morbidity was evaluated by subjective criteria, daily complete neurologic examinations, comparison of preoperative and postoperative brain stem auditory evoked response (BAER) tests, and postmortem examinations. RESULTS: Three dogs developed a transient cough but were neurologically normal after surgery. One dog was euthanatized within 12 hours of surgery because of severe postoperative morbidity associated with basilar artery disruption due to improper development of the craniectomy. Prolongations of postoperative BAER latencies were observed in 2 dogs but did not appear to be associated with clinical deficits or histopathologic changes in the brain stem. Minimal histopathologic changes were observed except in the dog with basilar artery disruption. Results of this study indicate that, although technically challenging, this procedure can be performed with minimal morbidity. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: The main indication for this procedure is surgical reduction or biopsy of ventrally located brain stem neoplasms in dogs. The major disadvantage is anatomic restrictions that prevent access to laterally oriented ventral brain stem masses.  相似文献

Development of a scale to evaluate postoperative pain in dogs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
OBJECTIVE: To design and evaluate a scale for measurement of postoperative pain in dogs. DESIGN: Randomized, blinded, prospective study, with positive- and negative-control groups. ANIMALS: 36 dogs undergoing general anesthesia for ovariohysterectomy and 12 dogs undergoing general anesthesia without surgery. PROCEDURE: A pain assessment scale was developed for dogs, which incorporated physiologic data (heart and respiratory rates) and behavioral responses (response to palpation, activity, mental status, posture, and vocalization). This pain scale was then applied to a study in which dogs were allocated to 2 groups, depending on the type of medication administered (acepromazine maleate only or acepromazine and butorphanol) before induction of general anesthesia. The 36 dogs that had ovariohysterectomy were allocated to 3 groups, members of which received butorphanol, carprofen, or no analgesic after surgery. Dogs were scored for signs of pain and videotaped at 0, 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, and 18 hours after surgery by an assessor who was blinded to the groups. Results were analyzed for significant differences in pain scores for single categories and total pain scores among groups. Video segments were scrambled and then scored by a second external assessor to test the repeatability of the results, using the pain assessment scale. RESULTS: Mean total pain scores were significantly different between the group of dogs that underwent general anesthesia only and each group of dogs that underwent general anesthesia and surgery. Pain scores for the analgesic-treatment groups reflected the known onset and duration of action of the analgesic used. Agreement between the internal and external assessors was excellent and indicated high precision between the 2 assessors for the population of dogs as a whole. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Behavioral and physiologic measurements can be used reliably to evaluate degree of pain in dogs during the postoperative period and their response to analgesics.  相似文献

A flexed dorsoplantar radiographic view of the talocrural joint was a useful additional view to diagnose abnormalities of the lateral trochlear ridge of the talus of 2 dogs. This view outlined the subchondral bone of both trochlear ridges of the talus and the apposing cochlea tibiae of the distal portion of the tibia. The tarsus was flexed at the level of the talocrural joint, and an x-ray beam was centered on the joint. With this additional view, fractures of the lateral trochlear ridge were readily diagnosed. This view would help to demonstrate osteochondral lesions of the lateral trochlear ridge.  相似文献

Brain stem auditory-evoked potentials (BAEP) were recorded in 4 dogs to analyze the relationship between acoustic stimulus intensities and peak latencies of each wave, and to investigate the relative effects of xylazine-atropine, xylazine-atropine-ketamine, and xylazine-atropine-pentobarbital combinations and the time-course effects of the latter 2 drug combinations on BAEP. Click stimulations fixed at a stimulus rate of 10/s and a frequency of 4 kHz were delivered at intensities ranging from 10- to 110-dB sound pressure level (SPL) in 10-dB steps for analyzing the relationship between the acoustic stimulus intensities and the peak latencies and at an intensity of 110-dB SPL for investigating the effects of the sedative and anesthetic drug combinations and their time-course effects on BAEP. Waves I to VI were identified with stimulus intensity of greater than or equal to 50-dB SPL. Wave VII was observed in some records, but was excluded from statistical analysis. As stimulus intensity was increased from 50- to 110-dB SPL, the latency decreased for all waves during xylazine-atropine-ketamine anesthesia. There were no statistically significant differences in the peak latencies of each wave in BAEP among xylazine-atropine, xylazine-atropine-ketamine, and xylazine-atropine-pentobarbital combinations 20 minutes after drug administration, except that the latency of wave VI during xylazine-atropine sedation was significantly (P less than 0.01) shorter than that detected during xylazine-atropine-ketamine or xylazine-atropine-pentobarbital anesthesia.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the antinociceptive actions of several doses of butorphanol by use of a thermal threshold testing device specifically designed for cats. ANIMALS: 6 domestic shorthair cats. PROCEDURE: The study was a masked, randomized, crossover design. Thermal thresholds were measured by use of a thermal threshold-testing device specifically developed for cats. A small probe containing a heater element and temperature sensor was held with consistent contact against a shaved area of the cat's skin with an elasticized band. Skin temperature was recorded before each test, prior to activation of the heater. On detection of a response (eg, the cat flinched, turned, or jumped), the stimulus was terminated and the threshold temperature recorded. Three baseline measurements were recorded before IV injection of 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, or 0.8 mg of butorphanol/kg. Each cat received all doses in a randomized order at least 1 week apart. The investigator was unaware of the treatment received. Thermal thresholds were measured every 15 minutes for 6 hours. RESULTS: Mean+/-SD pretreatment threshold temperature for all cats was 40.8+/-2.2 degrees C. There were no dose-related differences among treatments. There was a significant increase in threshold values for all treatments from 15 to 90 minutes after injection. Mydriasis was detected in all cats after treatment with butorphanol and dysphoric behavior was frequently exhibited. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results obtained by use of a thermal stimulus indicated that the duration of antinociceptive action of butorphanol was 90 minutes and there was no dose-response relationship in cats.  相似文献
