Experiments with cows and sheep are described in which the voluntary intakes of hay and silage of differing digestibility were determined. The voluntary intake of hay increased consistently with increasing digestibility, but the relationship was not as well defined for silage. The addition of concentrates depressed the intake of hay, and this effect was more marked for hay with a high digestibility than with poorer quality hay. Concentrates appeared to depress the intake of hay by sheep more than by cows, an effect which was again more marked when the hay had a high digestibility value.  相似文献

The relationships between eating behaviour, social dominance and voluntary intake of silage were examined in three experiments. Small groups of Friesian cattle were offered forage as a group in several different situations which caused different degrees of competition for silage. Restriction of the number of mangers available to the cows and of the amount of silage offered encouraged a marked increase in rate of eating silage. In Experiment I when the cows were changed from individual mangers to group feeding their mean eating rate of silage increased from 43 to 71 g silage dry matter min−1. Results from the second experiment provided confirmation. In both experiments submissive cows increased their rate of eating to a greater extent than dominant animals. When group-fed there was no significant correlation between degree of dominance and variation between cows in voluntary intake of silage, but milk yield and live weight were often directly correlated with silage intake. In Experiment 3 cows and heifers ate similar amounts of silage per unit live weight when group-fed.  相似文献

The variation between non-lactating British Friesian cows in eating and ruminating pattern, digestibility and voluntary intake of hay were measured about 4 weeks before calving. Among fourteen of the cows the daily duration of eating ranged from 214 to 462 min and rumination from 410 to 599 min with CV of 20 and 14 respectively. Daily hay intake varied between cows from 5.93 to 11.18 kg dry matter (DM) with a CV of 14. The mean digestibility coefficient of organic matter measured in nineteen cows was 0.57 ± 0.014 s.d. and of cellulose 0.70 ± 0.013 s.d. Intake of hay and cellulose digestibility were correlated (r = 0.51, P <0.05). There was a positive correlation between hay intake and duration of eating (r=0.64, P <0.01) but not between intake of hay and rate of eating. Daily time spent ruminating per kg hay DM eaten was negatively correlated with hay intake (r = 0.66, P <0.01). It is concluded that variation between cows in chewing time and in digestibility of cellulose may be important factors related to variation between cows in voluntary intake of hay.  相似文献

Three separate changeover experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of the amount of rolled barley and time of access to silage on the voluntary intake, eating behaviour and production of dairy cows. In Experiment 1, twenty-four milking cows were used to compare the effect of 4 1 and 6 1 kg d−1 rolled barley on voluntary intake and milk production. In Experiment 2, fourteen cows were used in a comparison of the effect on voluntary intake and milk production of 5- and 22-h access to silage. Experiment 3 measured the effects on intake of silage of 2 and 4 kg d−1 rolled barley and of 5- and 22-h access to silage. In Experiment I, increasing the amount of barley eaten reduced intake of silage by 0–50 kg dry matter (DM) per kg barley DM but in Experiment 3 with 5-h access to silage there was no significant difference between the amounts of silage eaten with 2 and 4 kg d−1 barley. However, in Experiment 3 when allowed 22-h access to silage, the replacement rate was 0–53 kg DM silage per kg DM barley. Increasing access from 5 to 22 h increased silage intake by 37% in Experiment 1 and by 27% in Experiment 3. Milk yield was significantly increased by 4% when extra barley was given in Experiment 1 but there was no significant effect in Experiment 3. Increasing the time of access to silage led to an 11% increase in milk yield in Experiment 2 but there was no significant effect in Experiment 3. There was much variation between cows in the depression of silage intake per kg change in barley DM eaten with coefficients of variation of 131% and 109% in Experiments 1 and 3, respectively. When allowed access to silage for 22 h daily, on average, each cow spent 180 min eating silage in ten meals, although there was appreciable variation between cows in eating behaviour. The amount of barley did not affect the cows' rate of eating silage nor the duration of eating.  相似文献

High rainfall and the corresponding low herbage DM content has been shown to adversely affect cattle intakes and production. This could arise from physical restrictions on intake or digestion rate, or other behavioural limitations such as reduced palatability. A knowledge of the reason for the intake reduction would assist in determining the optimum supplement to feed. Eight steers were offered four diets in a changeover design. The diets were: A, cut herbage; B, cut herbage with added surface water; C, as B but with a low dry matter (DM) forage supplement (silage); and D, as B but with a high DM forage supplement (hay). The addition of surface water to herbage reduced DM intake and feeding time but had no effect on biting rate or rate of intake. Neither hay nor silage was eaten in sufficient quantities to restore DM intake, even though the silage was of similar nutrient composition to the herbage.  相似文献

Two diets were compared: perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne L.) silage and perennial ryegrass/white clover ( Trifolium repens L.) silage, in each case fed ad libitum , without supplementation, to lactating dairy cows. The comparison was made with silages cut on each of four dates. The crops were wilted to a dry matter content of at least 256g kg-1 and no additives were used.
The grass/clover silages were well preserved at all four cuts. The grass was well preserved at three cuts, but, at a May cut, the grass silage was less well preserved and less digestible than the grass/clover silage. When the May silages were fed, milk yield was higher with grass/clover than with grass. Taking the experiment as a whole, however, milk yield and composition were similar on the two diets. The grass/clover silages had a lower proportion of cell wall and their intake by dairy cows was consistently higher than that of the grass silages.
It is concluded that perennial ryegrass/white clover crops can be ensiled successfully and fed successfully, with high intake, to lactating dairy cows, but it should not be assumed that cows will give more milk than when fed equivalent all-grass silage.  相似文献

Six castrated male sheep were used in a two-period crossover experiment to investigate the effect of mincing on the voluntary intake and digestibility of a silage. The silage was a high-quality material, containing 68 % digestihle organic matter in the dry matter, prepared from S24 perennial ryegrass cut with a precision chop forage harvester and ensiled with the addition of 2.3 1 t?1 formic acid as preser vative. The median size of particles in the unprocessed silage was 10–20 mm and in the minced silage 2–3 mm. The intakes of dry matter, organic matter and nitrogen for the minced silage were greater than for the unminced material, and for dry matter and organic matter intakes the differences were signi ficant (P<0.01). Mincing was associated, however, with a depression in the digestibility of all three constituents which offset the increase in intake. The intakes of digestible organic matter were 817 g d-1 for the minced silage and 729 g d?1 for the unminced material (P>0.05). Corresponding figures for digestible nitrogen intakes were 208 gd?1and23.0 gd?1 (P>005). It is concluded that with high-quality silage diets there is a physical component in the mechanism for the control of voluntary food intake. It is suggested that for sheep, depressions in the digestibility of dietary constituents are unlikely to occur until silages are chopped to a median particle size of 5–10 mm.  相似文献

Trials are described in which the intake of silage of varying length was determined. The results indicate that a higher voluntary dry-matter intake occurred as the length of the silage became progressively shorter, but this effect appeared to diminish when the silages were supplemented with concentrates. Data from one trial indicate that reducing the length of hay had no effect on voluntary intake when concentrates were fed.  相似文献

In three experiments the effects of restricting the silage ration of dairy cows and of offering alternative forages as buffer feeds were investigated.
In the first experiment of changeover design with 3-week periods, restricting the intake of low-quality silage to 0.62 of ad libitum had no significant effect on milk yield in spite of the large energy deficit. Offering high-quality hay as a buffer feed increased total DM intake and milk production of cows receiving either restricted or ad libitum silage.
In the second experiment of similar design, restricting the DM intake of high-quality silage to 0·58 of ad libitum significantly reduced milk yield and was associated with a large negative energy balance. Offering straw or ammonia-treated straw with the restricted silage diet did not restore milk production to the level achieved with ad libitum silage but these supplements slightly reduced the energy deficit of the cows. In the third experiment of continuous design lasting 7 weeks, restricting the silage ration to 0.85 of ad libitum had no significant effect on milk production. Offering a strawmix based on straw, barley, molasses and soya with the restricted silage ration restored total DM intake to the ad libitum silage level.
In all three experiments milk protein content was reduced by restricting the silage ration and partially restored by offering alternative forages. There were no significant effects on milk fat content and milk lactose content was only reduced by the severest restriction in Experiment 2. It is concluded that short-term minor restrictions of silage intake can be partly sustained by body fat mobilization but more severe restrictions will result in loss of milk yield. Good-quality hay and a strawmix were of benefit in restoring DM and metabolizable energy intakes, whereas straw and ammonia-treated straw were of little value.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted with sheep to investigate the effect of silage chop length on voluntary intake and eating and ruminating behaviour. The silages, made from Italian rye-grass, either received no additive or formic acid at a rate of 4 g kg?1 and were chopped to lengths of 5.3 cm (long), 1.8 cm (short) before ensiling or 1.8 cm (long/short) before feeding. The addition of the additive and short chopping improved the fermentation characteristics of the silage. Voluntary intake of silage dry matter and organic matter was higher with the short than with the long silage. Differences in silage digestibilities and cellulolytic activity did not explain the increase in silage intake. Sheep on the long silage had a lower rate of intake and a shorter ruminating time than on short silage, and thus the effective breakdown of the silage in the rumen was delayed, i.e. an increased latency time. Pseudo-rumination was significantly higher on the long than on the short silage.  相似文献

In 2 experiments nitrogenous fertilizer was applied at 3 levels (0, 46 and 92 lb N/ac) to a permanent pasture and a ryegrass/clover ley and the swards were harvested before ear emergence and conserved as either artificially dried grass or tetrapod hay. Apparent dry matter digestibility and voluntary food intake of the conserved herbages were measured with sheep.
N caused a small but significant depression in apparent DM digestibility but did not affect voluntary food intake. It increased yields of DM and digestible DM significantly.
The DM digestibility and voluntary food intake of hay were always significantly lower than those of the corresponding dried grass. Voluntary food intake of all fodders was directly related to herbage digestibility and inversely related to herbage crude fibre content.  相似文献

Three feeding trials with big bale silage were carried out to determine whether previously established intake differences between artificially dried Italian ryegrass cultivars could be repeated under differing conditions of food preparation and presentation. The silage was prepared in 2 consecutive years from the same field crop and fed to groups of cattle in both years. The second year silage was also fed to sheep indoors. All animals were fed ad libitum and the voluntary intakes recorded for groups of cattle and individual sheep. Chewing activity was also recorded on all groups of sheep.
The chemical composition of the two cultivars as fresh grass was similar in 1984 but there were small differences in 1983 with Tarquin showing slightly higher organic matter digestibility (DOMD) and lower dry matter and water-soluble carbohydrate compared to RvP. The only consistent differences in silage composition between cultivars was a slightly higher level of modified acid detergent (MAD) fibre in RvP compared to Tarquin. Despite these small differences the voluntary intake of cattle fed Tarquin was 19% higher than RvP in the first year and 35% in the second, while sheep showed a similar difference of 40% with the second year silage.
Recording of jaw activity with sheep showed that animals spent 40% more time eating and 27% more time ruminating RvP than Tarquin per unit of food eaten. This suggested that the intake differences, which were independent of digestibility, were related to the physical resistance of the feed to breakdown by chewing. These differences depend on the structural characteristics of the plants and were associated with differences in leaf/stem ratios and MAD-fibre content. These are less likely to be affected by the method of conservation or feed presentation and, although the degree of difference between the cultivars changed with the different procedures, the inherently higher intake of Tarquin persisted.  相似文献

The effects of the time of access to feed (8 h or 24 h) with silage-based rations (unwilted or wilted silage) were studied for two years. In each year the experiment comprised 52 individually fed cows in a 2 × 2 factorial design and covered weeks 1-20 of the lactation. The cows were offered silage ad libitum , 1 kg of hay per day, and concentrate according to the predicted energy-corrected milk (ECM) yield.
Increasing the access time from 8 h to 24 h increased the total intake of dry matter (DM) and metabolizable energy (ME) by 6%. This resulted in increased yield of ECM by 5%. The eating rate of forage was significantly increased by restricted time of access. Wilting had no significant effect on total feed intake or milk yield. The importance of providing a sufficient length of time during which the cows have access to feed was confirmed. It was concluded that 8 h d−1 of access to silage-based rations is not enough in early lactation.  相似文献

Lucerne was ensiled at various dry matter contents, within the range of 19·8% to 39·6%. An increase was found in lactic acid production, with a consequent decrease in volatile acid and volatile base content, up to the level of 33·9% dry matter.

Over a 24-week period, three groups of dairy cows were continuously stocked at 8, 10 or 12 cows ha-1 between morning and afternoon milkings, and overnight were housed and offered grass silage ad libitum. Due to a prolonged drought, sward heights only averaged 4·1 cm.
The increase in daytime stocking rate led to a decline in herbage intake, and increases in silage intake. At the highest stocking rate (12 cows ha-1), the silage intake failed to compensate for the reduced herbage intake. Consequently the total dry matter and estimated metabolizable energy intakes were lower than for the 8 and 10 cows ha-1 treatments. Milk yields and milk composition were not significantly affected by treatment but the 12 cows ha-1 stocking rate gave the lowest milk and milk solids yields.
The utilized metabolizable energy (UME) on the grazed swards was greatest for the 10 cows ha-1 treatment. The sward cut to provide the silage had a UME level (GJ ha-1) 32% greater on average than the grazed swards during the same growth period. The total areas utilized for grazing and silage production for 8, 10 and 12 cows ha-1 were 0·240, 0·224 and 0·215 ha respectively. Fat and protein yields per unit area were greatest for the 10 cows ha-1 group.  相似文献

In two experiments the effects of adding surface water to herbage on its digestion by ruminants were examined. In experiment 1, with sheep, adding water to silage reduced DM intake and the diet DM digestibility. Offering a high DM alternative forage, hay, increased DM digestibility with the wetted silage, but tended to decrease it with the dry silage. More hay was eaten with the wetted than dry silage. In experiment 2, with steers, adding water to fresh herbage reduced DM intake but had no effect on rumen pH or ammonia levels. Adding water to the herbage reduced the rate of DM disappearance from nylon bags placed in the rumen and the proportion of rumen liquor particles of low specific gravity. The proportion of very short and very long particles in the rumen liquor was also reduced by adding water to the herbage.  相似文献

Two experiments were carried out to evaluate propionic acid-treated hay as a feed for sheep in which eighteen ewes (experiment 1) and eighteen ewe lambs (experiment 2) were fed ad libitum on hay only. At feeding, the propionic acid-treated hays had higher D-values and water-soluble carbohydrate concentrations, but a lower dry matter concentration, than the untreated hays. The voluntary feed intake and liveweight gain of the sheep fed on two acid-treated hays and on an untreated hay in experiment 1 were similar. In the second experiment an acid-treated moist hay was eaten in greater amounts by the sheep and liveweight gains were greater than on the corresponding untreated hay, but were not significantly different from those of sheep fed on field-cured hay.  相似文献

In three separate feeding experiments using a total of thirty individually-housed Ayrshire cows three silages made from perennial ryegrass were given ad libitum together with supplements of four different hays in the long form. The in vitro D-values of the silages ranged from 0·298 to 0·283, and the hays from 0·280 to 0·200. The daily intake of hay DM varied from 0·2 to 4·2 kg per cow and was given either without or with a daily maximum of 2·2 kg concentrate DM containing 379–527 g CP per kg DM. On average, 1 kg hay DM decreased silage intake by 0·24 kg DM with a range of 0·21–1·20 kg. The hay supplements had only small and non-significant effects on total DM intake, milk yield and milk composition, but increased the daily intake of drinking water. In three behavioural studies, the eating and ruminating times expressed as min per kg DM did not differ significantly between the various supplement treatments. It is concluded that hay has only a marginal value as a supplement for grass silage, although the hay could serve as a useful 'buffer' feed if the amount of silage was limited.  相似文献

An experiment was undertaken to examine the effect of supplement type on herbage intake, total dry matter (DM) intake, animal performance and nitrogen utilization with grazing dairy cows. Twenty‐four spring‐calving dairy cows were allocated to one of six treatments in a partially balanced changeover design with five periods of four weeks. The six treatments were no supplement (NONE), or supplementation with either grass silage (GS), whole‐crop wheat silage (WS), maize silage (MS), rapidly degradable concentrate (RC) or slowly degradable concentrate (SC). Cows were rotationally grazed with a mean herbage allowance of 20·5 kg DM per cow per day, measured above 4 cm. Forage supplements were offered for approximately 2 h immediately after each morning milking, with cows on NONE, RC and SC treatments returning to the grazing paddock immediately after milking. Cows on treatment MS had a significantly higher supplement DM intake than the other treatments but a significantly lower grass DM intake than the other treatments, resulting in no significant difference in total DM intake when compared with cows on treatments WS, RC and SC. Concentrate type had no significant effect on herbage intake, milk yield, milk composition or yield of milk components. The yield of milk fat and milk protein was significantly higher on treatments MS, RC and SC compared with treatments NONE, GS and WS. The results indicate that despite a relatively high substitution rate, maize silage can be a useful supplement for the grazing dairy cow.  相似文献

Nutritive value and voluntary intake of legumes are generally considered to be higher than those of grasses when ensiled at similar digestibility, although high levels of soluble protein can result in low N utilization by animals and high losses to the environment. The objectives of this experiment were to describe the optimum combination of Westerwolds ryegrass ( Lolium multiflorum Lam. cv. Aubade) and lucerne ( Medicago sativa L. cv. AC Caribou) silages to maximize liveweight gain of steers fed silage, determine chemical components that are important and ascertain whether steers selected the optimum mixture when given a choice. Both silages contained similar concentrations of dry matter (DM), acid-detergent fibre (ADF) and organic acids, but lucerne silage had higher concentrations of N, soluble-N and ammonia-N. Westerwolds ryegrass silage contained more neutral-detergent fibre (NDF). In a 12-week experiment, voluntary intake by Hereford steers was not influenced when the proportion of the two silages was changed from 1 to 0 in 0·25 increments. However, liveweight gain and feed efficiency increased linearly ( P  < 0·001) as the proportion of ryegrass silage fed was increased. When preconditioned to either of the two silages, steers showed a significant preference for ryegrass over lucerne ( P  < 0·05). When conditioned to a mixture of both silages, no preference was elicited. It is suggested that extensive solubilization and deamination of protein in the lucerne silage may have caused the preference for Westerwolds ryegrass silage and the higher liveweight gains on diets containing higher proportions of Westerwolds ryegrass silage.  相似文献
