"Renaissance Ideology" and Chinese Traditional Architectural Culture

Owing to the special geographic environment and chronic historical accumulation,the Chinese nation has formed the national character mainly based on "renaissance ideology",which has exerted a profound influence on the forming and development of Chinese traditional architecture.By discussing the spatial pattern characteristics of country,cities,courtyards and geomantic omen,the authors indicate their common feature-enclosure,and summarize the spatial pattern of Chinese traditional architecture influenced by "renaissance ideology"-layer upon layer enclosure by bringing the spatial patterns of different layers into a unified framework.At the same time,the construction activity is extended to social culture so as to find out the correlation between the spatial pattern of Chinese traditional architecture and national character.     

On Fengshui and Rockery and Water Layout

Definition of Fengshui and the theories of selecting mountain and water environment in Fengshui were elaborated. Theories about mountain-water relationship were expounded from the perspective of piling of rockeries and layout of water, a residential area in Hefei City, Beijing Olympics Park, Hangzhou Prince Bay Park, mineral pit of Shanghai Chenshan Botanic Garden, Beijing Beihai Park, Shanghai Changfeng Park were taken for example to demonstrate the influence of traditional rockery and mountain layout in Fengshui on modern landscape design.     

Study on the Inheritance of Landscape Culture in Traditional Ancient Villages of Jiangxi: A Case Study of Ancient Liukeng Village in Lean County,Jiangxi Province

Traditional ancient village is a miniature of history, embodies landscape cultures with rich connotations. On the basis of introducing basic conditions of ancient Liukeng Village, this paper explored landscape cultural elements in the village from such perspectives of natural landscape, architecture, clan system, and Fengshui, and proposed the pertinent approaches of landscape culture inheritance respectively, namely, "integrated protection", "hierarchical protection", "live inheritance" and "rationally accepting and rejecting", by adhering to such principles as keeping natural originality, integrality, humanistic ecology, and dynamic openness.     

Research into the Site Plan of Baiyun Tourist Development Area, Chongqing

By introducing and analyzing the overall plan of Chongqing Baiyun Lake tourist development area and several main highlight landscapes, this paper points out that the creation of architectural environment should reflect the traditional culture. It is the basis for creation with architectural characters. It also coincides with the building philosophy-"tian ren he yi"(integration of nature with human beings), proposed by Chinese traditional architecture.     

Influence of “Conception Forming” in Traditional Chinese Landscape Painting on Landscape Art

"Conception forming" in traditional Chinese landscape painting is created by artists to describe mental state, but not images, so it is also called "virtual environment". In the construction of Chinese gardens, participation of literati and artists successfully transformed the "virtual environment" of traditional Chinese landscape painting into "real environment". This paper explored the inf luence of "form and spirit" in "conception forming" of traditional Chinese landscape painting on landscape art from 4 perspectives, so as to figure out the relationship between "form and spirit" and "virtuality and reality", and that the most artistic part of the relationship between "form and spirit" is the natural transformation between "virtuality and reality".     

Layouts and Aesthetic Characteristics of Buildings in the Period of Republic of China along Zhongshan Road in Nanjing City

Zhongshan Road in Nanjing City was formerly known as "Meridian of the Republic of China", signif icant buildings of the Republic of China were mostly distributed along this modern avenue. The diversifi ed styles and types of these buildings refl ect the historical changes of modern Chinese buildings, and also record history of that age. The buildings are intangible cultural heritages of not only Nanjing, but also China. Study on and protection of these buildings is a process of reviewing modern architectural history of China, and also rethinking the inheritance and development of traditional Chinese cultures. In addition, the research promotes the coordinated development of modern urban construction and social cultures.     

The Art of Landscape Design of the Grand Sight Garden in Novel "The Story of the Stone"

The Grand Sight Garden in Chinese traditional novel "The Story of the Stone" takes an important position in Chinese traditional landscape architecture.In this paper,the aesthetic value of the Grand Sight Garden is analyzed and the real meaning and practical value of this fictitious "garden" is discussed from two aspects: composition structure and artistic conception.     

Three Turns of Contemporary Architecture and the Chinese Traditional Thoughts

Significant changes have taken place within the contemporary architecture since the 20th century: firstly the architecture turns from "thing" to "nothing",secondly the experience of architecture turns from logic to essence intuition,and thirdly the architecture turns from noun to verb,from which we find in surprise the sparks of the Chinese traditional thought which criticizes all the ready-made,especially the conceptual thought with its happening and generation,and shows a new non-subject-object-dimidiate,non-logical and fundamentally non-metaphysical perspective in theory.This made it possible for us to reconsider and reinterpret the contemporary architecture from a more original new perspective.     

Poetic and Pictorial Splendor-Expression of Traditional Chinese Literati in Chinese Architecture

The expression of traditional Chinese literati is based on connection, seeking emotion and harmony. With various forms, though, this style of expression shares the same value in some art forms, like traditional Chinese poetry, calligraphy and paintings, and Chinese architecture. Based on the commonalities of various forms of literature and art, this paper offered an insight into Chinese architecture in light of poetic and pictorial expression of traditional Chinese literati. In order to illuminate the corresponding connection between traditional Chinese poetry, calligraphy and paintings, and Chinese architecture, this paper discussed the expression of Chinese architecture corresponding to the essence of traditional Chinese poetry, calligraphy and paintings respectively from the perspective of philosophy, aesthetics, and culture study of Chinese architecture. Via analogous analysis, which includes the analogy between the emotion of architecture and the feelings in traditional poetry, the analogy between the order of architecture and the spirit of calligraphy, and the analogy between the artistic conception and the picturesque scene, the poetic and pictorial expression of Chinese architecture was clarified. This paper emphasized that Chinese architecture needs to jump out of the concrete image, eradicate the interdisciplinary boundaries, and stress the integration of arts and humanities in a higher level, to express Chinese architecture in a Chinese way. That means making Chinese architecture modern in forms and techniques, and traditional in spirit and artistic conception.

In this paper a kind of vague space in traditional architecture is analyzed and its mode and dealing ways in Chinese traditional architecture are explored. The authors hope that this article will help us learn from the traditional architecture culture and enlighten the design thread to create modem native architecture.     

On Demonstration of Urban Architectural Cultures in Counties (Districts)

Through studying current architectural history and culture of counties (districts), environmental art design principles were applied to elaborate the ways of urban architecture expressing cultures from the five perspectives of traditional benevolence and kindheartedness, overall urban planning, art of architecture, regionality of architecture and historical buildings. The study was to provide theoretical and practical basis for the urban construction of counties (districts) in Jiangxi Province.     

Study on Dominant Expression of Regional Culture of the Qinling Mountains in Local Residential Buildings

Regional culture of the Qinling Mountains shows distinct features since it was born in the local outstanding ecological environment, study on local architecture is significant for the dominant expression of regional culture, protection of local environment, and echoing with the theme of ecological civilization construction. This paper, on the basis of the mutual infl uence and evolution of regional culture and style of local residential buildings, explored the reasons for the weakening of local architectural style, and specified the signifi cance of promoting local style of the living environment. By studying the infl uence of local natural environment and humanistic environment on architectural style along the northern foot of the Qinling Mountains, the paper explored the expression of regional culture in residential buildings, with Xian Garden(Xi'an Yuanzi) as an example, and aimed at giving useful help to the dominant expression of regional culture in modern residential buildings.     

Study on Solar Heat Control for Buildings in South Area

With the view of building and environment sustainable development, the traditional measures of solar heat control for buildings in the south area were analyzed and their effect on the urban environment was discussed. This paper shows the importance of urban planning and environment planning on solar heat control for buildings.     

New Perspective of Architectural Design Based on Immersive Theatre Thinking: A Case Study of Rural Living Room Design in Majia Marsh

The new urbanization provides opportunities for the ecological protection of traditional regional culture. In the context of the integrated development of agriculture, tourism, and cultural industries, this paper integrates the thinking of "immersive theatre" and adopts the design method of multithread dramatic narrative mode to create a number of interactive flow lines in the architecture and focus on the sensory experiences of environment, enabling the traditional regional culture to really touch the audience.     

Lighting Design of Chinese Traditional Buildings and Application of New Type of Little Power LED

This paper is a part of the research on the lighting techniques of the traditional Chinese buildings in Summer Palace,Beijing,which is a sub-project of the Municipal Research Project on the Correlative Techniques for Beijing's Sustainable Development(Y0604017040391).The work,which the authors took part in,on the most representative Chinese traditional buildings in Summer Palace,is taken as a case study on lighting design and lab simulated experiments and checked by practical result,illustrating a working frame for other similar lighting design works.     

Calculation of environmental cost in the structural optimization of super tall buildings

Chinese mainland has seen a rapid construction speed of super tall buildings in recent years. Due to its huge quantity material and energy assumption, the super tall buildings exert great impact on the environment. An innovative new life cycle model is proposed for assess and optimize the life cycle environmental cost of super tall buildings. The new life cycle model has two features. Firstly the space distribution of the building materials is considered besides the time dimension, and secondly the single life cycle concept is extended to multiple life cycles to investigate the carbon footprint from the perspective of more than one life cycle. A benchmark super tall building is established to illustrate the application of the proposed new life cycle model. According to the case study results, a remarkable difference would be made in carbon emissions if the life cycle environmental cost based structural optimization method could be applied.     

Regional Architecture and Design Practice

Taking a project practice for example,this paper probed into the design methods of regional architecture in such aspects as geographic environment,traditional folk residence style,space environment and construction material etc.In this paper,one of the developing directions of modern architecture,i.e.the regional architecture design is pointed out first,then,the correlation between regional architecture and natural environment as well as historical culture tradition,space environment and material application of regional architecture,etc.were systematically discussed,it also indicated that the regional architecture should be an organic renewal of traditional folk residence style.It is concluded that the regional architecture should be in accordance with the nature.     

The Origin and Implication of Chinese Traditional Courtyard Pattern

During thousands of years, the Chinese traditional architecture has almost followed only one pattern-the courtyard one. In this paper, the ideal living mode of "Tian ren he yi"(unity of the heaven and human beings) is expatiated. Then, the response of courtyard to this living mode is analyzed and the origin and signification of courtyard are discussed. At the end, how to keep and develop the vitality of traditional courtyard in modern times is investigated.     

Livable Environment Design in Superfluous Things

Superfluous Things, written by scholar Wen Zhenheng in the Ming Dynasty, is regarded as the encyclopedia on Chinese ancient landscape architecture and environmental design. It analyzed Chinese traditional garden systematically and comprehensively. This study emphasizes the contemporary value of the principles and methods in Superfluous Things. According to the book, 2 key environmental building principles that can be applied into modern landscape design have been put forward:(1) artificiality should fit with natural conditions;(2) less without reduction. Based on these, a coupling point on the practice and research of building a sustainable and friendly environment has been found, which combines natural resources, human needs, economic benefits and cultural factors.
