The lion's paw scallop, Nodipecten subnodosus (Sowerby) has considerable aquacultural potential due to its fast growth and large adductor muscle. Prior investigations throughout northwestern Mexico's littoral have reported highly variable growth rates; furthermore, no studies are available of the environment on growth and gametogenesis in this species under culture conditions. This investigation assesses the effect of food availability and temperature on the growth and gametogenesis of N. subnodosus in a suspended culture system at Guerrero Negro lagoon, Mexico. After 1 year of cultivation, N. subnodosus reached 69.13 mm in shell height (SH) (0.196 mm day?1, 14 months old). Two significant growth spurts were observed: over the two first months of culture (August and September 2001, mean growth rate 0.4 mm day?1) and in September 2002 (0.3 mm day?1), both related to high temperatures and chlorophyll a concentrations. The onset of gametogenesis occurred in April 2002, with an increase in temperature (10‐month‐old scallops, 54.5 mm SH). The first spawning occurred in October and November (86.2 and 93 mm SH), with peak temperatures. These results, together with the analysis of previous reports, indicate that N. subnodosus has a higher preference for temperate areas; therefore, the Guerrero Negro lagoon appears to be a suitable site to culture this species.  相似文献

The effects of hyperoxic conditions on survival, gonad growth, feed intake, and food conversion of adult and somatic growth and survival of juvenile green sea urchin, Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis, were examined. Juvenile and adult sea urchins with initial diameters of 11.5 and 75 mm, respectively, were reared in water with constant oxygen saturations of 100 (control), 115 and 130% for 42 d (juvenile) and 51 d (adult sea urchin) at 8 C and 33‰ salinity. During the experiment the gonad indices of the adults tripled from 7.3% (±1.5) to 21.4% (±4.3), 19.4% (±4.7), and 22.0% (±4.4) for the groups kept at 100, 115, and 130% oxygen saturation, respectively. At the end of the experiment, the differences in gonadal size among the groups were not significant. Neither were there any significant differences in food intake or food conversion ratio among the groups. Only one animal died during the experiment. The juvenile sea urchin kept at 100, 115, and 130% oxygen saturation doubled their test diameter from initially 11.5 mm (±1.5) to 19.9 mm (±1.4), 21.4 mm (±2.1) and 20.6 mm (1.0), respectively, but there were no significant differences in growth among these groups. There was no mortality during the experiments in these groups. Overall, the findings suggest that juvenile and adult S. droebachiensis are unable to utilize hypersaturation of oxygen to increase somatic or gonad growth, but can be reared at hyperoxygenated water for prolonged periods of time without harmful effects.  相似文献

This is the first evaluation of growth and survival of spat of the Cortez oyster Crassostrea corteziensis (Hertlein) produced under controlled conditions in a coastal area in the state of Sonora, Mexico for aquaculture purposes. A suspended culture technique, used for the Pacific oyster C. gigas, was used. The Cortez oyster has an isometric shell growth during the first 13 months, reaching 71.3±1.9 mm length, 52.6±1.3 mm thickness and 25.1±0.8 mm width. Allometric growth was found between total weight and length, thickness and width (survival was 70%). The relationships between particulate organic, inorganic material, chlorophyll a and environmental parameters with growth are described. Growth rates of C. corteziensis were affected by temperature with retardation at less than 18°C. For aquaculture purposes, it is recommended that spat be sowed after winter, and oyster harvest occur at the end of autumn. According to the von Bertalanffy equation, Cortez oysters would reach the traditional exploitation size of 65 mm (mean length) at harvest. Finally, the results of this study have shown that C. corteziensis is a good candidate for aquaculture projects in this region.  相似文献

The present study evaluates the effect of two temperatures, 14°C (T14) and 18°C (T18), on yield and the presence of cranial abnormalities during early development in north palm ruff (Seriolella violacea). Different time indices – days post‐hatching (DPH), degree‐days (D°) and effective degree‐days (D°eff) – were used to analyse growth during cultivation. Several ontogenetic events were achieved in less time during cultivation at 18°C. Additionally, a larger total length and final weight, as well as a higher survival rate, were achieved after 80 days of culture at higher temperatures (T18 = 55.5 ± 1.5 mm; 2.87 ± 0.21 g; 1.80 ± 0.18% and T14 = 24.3 ± 2.2 mm; 0.26 ± 0.08 g; 1.33 ± 0.12%). D° and D°eff were valid as independent temperature indices for predicting the growth response of S. violacea against thermal variations. The frequencies of cranial skeletal abnormalities (mouth and opercular complex) were evaluated in the pre‐flexion, flexion, post‐flexion and juvenile stages. However, the frequency of cranial skeletal abnormalities at the end of this study was not significantly influenced (P > 0.05) by temperature, and values below 21% were recorded in both treatments. These results can be of practical use for optimizing culture conditions to maximize the yield and quality of S. violacea juveniles.  相似文献

A captive population of Pacific white shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) replicated in two environments was evaluated for genetic variability and covariability of size traits. A total of 37 full‐sib families, each with an average of 16–20 individuals within family, were used for the analysis. There was no family by environment interaction for any of the traits. However, both fixed effects, sex and environment, were significant. The shrimp grown in environment ‘B’ (Sinaloa) grew larger and heavier than those grown in environment ‘A’ (La Paz), possibly because of the higher temperatures and lower densities in the first one during grow‐out. The females were significantly larger than the males for all traits, except for abdominal (tail) length and weight. The heritabilities, estimated through MTDFREML (multiple‐trait derivative‐free restricted maximum likelihood) after introducing environment and sex as fixed effects, were total length 0.22±0.07, abdominal length 0.23±0.07, cephalothorax length 0.17±0.06, total weight 0.17±0.06, abdominal weight 0.18±0.06, cephalothorax weight 0.15±0.06, and width of the first abdominal segment (0.14±0.05). Genetic correlations (rg) were high between the length and weight (total and abdominal), but lower for cephalothorax weight or length with the other traits. The width of the first abdominal segment correlations with other traits was intermediate.  相似文献

Growth and survival of the scallop Lyropecten nodosus were studied in 1997 at two sites (inner and outer Turpialito Bay) during a non‐upwelling period normally occurring between August and November. Individuals had an initial shell height of 4.86 cm (SD=1.64 cm). Both experimental groups were held in suspended plastic baskets at the same depth (4 m). Measurements of shell height and dry weights of shell, gonad, digestive gland, remaining tissues and shell biofouling were taken at monthly intervals. Environmental parameters, including temperature, phytoplanktonic biomass, total particulate material (TPM) and associated organic (POM) and inorganic (PIM) fractions, were recorded simultaneously. At the end of the study, significant differences in growth and survival of scallops were observed between the two experimental sites. Scallops maintained inside the bay showed a 22% greater increase in shell height (7.41±0.27 cm) than those placed outside the bay (6.37±0.41 cm). Survival of scallops inside the bay was 31% higher compared with scallops outside. The greater availability of food of phytoplanktonic origin during the first two experimental months (July and August) together with greater POM throughout the whole experimental period except September, at the inner bay site, probably explained survival and growth differences observed between the two locations. Results suggest that, during the non‐upwelling period (characterized by low primary productivity and high water temperatures), POM of sedimentary origin may play an important role as an energy source required for metabolic and reproductive activities of L. nodosus.  相似文献

The relationship between the shell dimensions of pearl oysters. Pinctada mazatlanica (Hanley 1856) and Pteria sterna (Gould 1851). was studied to determine the possible change of form of the shell during growth. The intention was to determine the number, size and location of nuclei that could be implanted in oysters used for Mabé pearl production. Using the database of our Pearl Culture Research Programme developed in Bahía de La Paz, México, we obtained measurements of 500 shells of P. mazatlanica and 500 shells of P. sterna, representing 3 years of continuous growth under extensive culture conditions. The height-length, height-thickness and the height-weight relationships of both species were analysed, as was the height-wing length relationship for P. sterna. There was isometric growth up to 100 mm shell height, and negative-allometric growth after 120-125 mm for P. mazatlanica. The height-thickness relationship followed a linear model, whereas the height-weight relationship was exponential. No clear allometric pattern was found in P. sterna and all relationships fitted the power equation.  相似文献

The growth and survival of the Zhikong scallop Chlamys farreri suspended in deep water of Haizhou Bay were studied from July 2007 to June 2008, and the biodeposition method was used to estimate the clearance rate of C. farreri under field conditions. Results showed that the scallop grew fast during all the culture time, with the exception of summer. The condition index of the scallop increased with time and reached the highest value in spring of the second year. The survival of scallops was 60.8 ± 3.9% at the end of this study, mortality occurring mainly during the summer and autumn of the first year. The clearance rate fluctuated obviously with season, with the highest value in September 2007, and the lowest value in March 2008. Factors accounting for variations in growth and clearance rate of scallops are also discussed.  相似文献

This study examined the effects of density and growing season on growth and survival of juvenile lion's paw scallops (Nodipecten subnodosus) in Estero San Buto, a mangrove channel in Bahía Magdalena, Mexico. Scallops were kept in plastic mesh bags in oyster trays at three population densities (500, 1000 and 2000 organisms per tray, or low medium and high density respectively) over a period of 2 months from October to December 2001 and from February to April 2002. Growth (shell height increment) was measured every 7–12 days and mortality was evaluated at the end of the experiment (dead shell count). Overall growth was fast (0.24–0.38 mm day?1) in comparison with other pectinids. Significant differences were found for both, density and season, with faster growth occurring at lower densities and during the fall season when the water temperature was higher. Mortality was low (0.5–3.0% 60 day?1) except for the high‐density treatment in the fall (44% 60 day?1). Crowding together with high water temperatures and increased metabolic oxygen demand of the scallops and possibly competition for food were the probable reasons for this high mortality. Overall, mortality was lower in the spring, when temperatures were lower, O2 values were higher and food was more abundant.  相似文献

The growth and mortality rate of different size of mussels, Mytilus galloprovincialis, were compared in Mersin bay, Izmir. Mussel sampling was performed on a monthly basis over 1 year, together with hyrobiological parameters. Water temperature, salinity, chlorophyll a, total particulate matter (TPM) and particulate organic carbon (POC) were determined. Average chlorophyll a, TPM and POC values were 3.88±1.62 μg L−1, 13.12±3.68 mg L−1 and 252±121.89 μg L−1 respectively. Initial mean lengths of mussels for each size group were 10 mm (9.91±0.25 mm), 20 mm (20.14±0.29 mm), 30 mm (30.66±0.21 mm), 40 mm (40.14±0.21 mm), 50 mm (50.62±0.21 mm), 60 mm (59.77±0.21 mm) and 70 mm (69.47±0.62 mm). Maximum growth in length occurred during the spring–summer months. The annual length increments of mussel size groups were 46.22, 41.42, 30.3, 28.03, 20.63, 16.34 and 12.03 mm from small to large size groups respectively. Small mussels grew faster than large mussels and reached commercial size at the same time. Mortality was <5% for all groups at the end of the experiment.  相似文献

Fingerling rearing of Indian major carps, Catla catla, Labeo rohita and Cirrhinus mrigala, were conducted in concrete tanks under a polyculture system at a density of 0.3 million fry ha?1 to evaluate the effect of one, two or three feedings per day on growth, survival and feed utilization. Fry were fed with formulated supplementary diet at 10% of biomass per day during the first 15 days, followed by 8% in the next 15 days and 6% thereafter, for 60 days. Feeding of fish three times daily led to higher growth (103.9±8.5 mm/10.3±2.4 g) than those feeding twice (100.2±4.8 mm/9.9±1.5 g) or once (97.2±9.8 mm/9.4±2.1 g) daily, although the values were not significantly different (P>0.05). Survival rate ranging between 72.3% and 75.1% also did not vary significantly (P>0.05) among the treatments. However, higher feeding frequencies resulted in better feed utilization as evident from decreasing feed conversion ratio values. The present study suggested requirement of a higher feeding frequency for rohu compared with catla and mrigal.  相似文献

We compared performance (growth, survival, condition, and health indices) of largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides, fingerlings (10.3 g [SE ± 0.5 g] and 92 mm [SE ± 1 mm] total length) fed one of four commercial grower feeds: Purina Aquamax Grower 400 (PAG; PMI Nutrition International LLC), Bio-Oregon BioDiet Grower (BDG; Bio-Oregon), Silver Cup Steelhead (SCS; Silver Cup), and Richloam Bass Fry Diet 12 (RBF; Silver Cup). Sixteen 833-L circular tanks, connected in parallel to a recirculation system, were initially stocked with 2.25 kg of fish (219 fish each, 0.32 fish/L) with four replicates per feed treatment. Water temperature was 25°C, and photoperiod was 15 h light:9 h dark. Feed sizes (2.4–3.0 mm) were comparable, and protein compositions ranged from 49% to 61%. Fish were fed to satiation multiple times per day (trial duration = 100 days). Overall, performance was best for fish fed RBF, followed by PAG and BDG, and then SCS. The SCS feed resulted in significantly lower growth and survival (P ≤ 0.05). The PAG and BDG feeds resulted in significantly lower growth than the RBF feed (P ≤ 0.05); however, survival did not differ (P > 0.05). Performance measures were positively correlated with protein, and protein to energy ratio and negatively correlated with fat and carbohydrate compositions. The four commercial grower feeds resulted in highly varied growth, survival, and health indices, and this research should facilitate feed choice for various largemouth bass production strategies as well as increase contribution of stocked fish.  相似文献

Natural spawning, early development and larviculture of the ornate goby Istigobius ornatus in captivity were studied for the first time. I. ornatus spawned 46 times from 31 October 2013 to 31 October 2014. Fecundity ranged from 246 to 10,214 eggs per clutch, with an average hatching rate of 77.8% ± 9.9% (M ± SEM). Fertilized eggs (1.31–1.54 × 0.46–0.50 mm in diameter) were adhesive demersal and oval‐shaped. Embryonic development lasted 84 hr at 27.5 ± 0.5°C. Newly hatched larvae [2.12 ± 0.04 mm in total length (TL)] transformed to the juvenile stage completely when TL was 7.79 mm. Effects of different water temperatures (24, 28 and 32°C) and salinities (10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 g/L) on per cent survivals (%) and survival activity indices (SAIs) were tested. Survival was not significantly different under different temperatures; SAIs was significantly higher at 28°C. Larvae showed the significantly higher survival and SAIs at salinities 10–30 g/L than at 35 and 40 g/L. Effect of different prey densities on survival was significantly higher in 7 days post hatch larvae fed 20 and 30 rotifers/ml. These findings could guide future programs in captive breeding technology development and commercial production of other marine ornamental gobies.  相似文献

This research was done with the purpose to ascertain the biological feasibility of the culture of Crassostrea virginica (Gmelin 1971) at Rio Lagartos lagoon in Yucatán, México. Spat from two localities of the Golfo de México were grown in Nestier boxes: spat from Tamiahua, Veracruz, which had an initial average height of 22.50 ± 5.10 (SD) mm and initial total wet weight of 2.90 ± 1.64 g and spat from Mecoacán, Tabasco, that were 32.05 ± 4.50 mm and 5.53 ± 0.03 g, respectively. Both groups of oysters reached commercial size after 10 months of culture. Veracruz spat reached 65.00 ± 6.80 mm in height and 33.26 ± 7.02 g in total wet weight. Those from Tabasco reached 62.90 ± 6.70 mm in height and 33.97 ± 9.95 g in total wet weight. The mean physiological condition index for oysters from Tabasco was 5.96% and from Veracruz was 4.52%. Total survival rate was 63% for spat from Veracruz and 55% from Tabasco. Environmental conditions in the culture area proved to be favourable for the rearing of C. virginica.  相似文献

The growth, survival and influence of environmental factors were analysed in two cohorts of cultured Pteria sterna in Ayangue Bay, Province of Santa Elena, Ecuador (tropical Eastern Pacific). Juveniles representing cohorts I and II (8.4 ± 0.54 and 5.0 ± 0.17 mm in dorso‐ventral axis) were deployed in November 2015 and February 2016, and grown in pearl nets suspended in a long line for 12 and 10 months respectively. The stocking density was monthly and bi‐monthly reduced during sampling of individuals to determine growth in dorso‐ventral shell axis, dry mass of shell, soft tissues and dry mass of fouling on shell. Water temperature, salinity, total seston and phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll a) were determined at the culture site. Results showed that P. sterna reached ~100 mm in length during the first year of culture. Although little negative influence of environmental factors was detected, high temperatures during the reproduction period can be the most negative influential trait. The highest tissue mass (6 g), which occurred at the 10th month of cultivation, as well as a high availability of spat by artificial collectors in the coastal waters, showed that the species can be considered a good candidate for aquaculture in the tropical eastern Pacific.

We assessed growth in subyearling chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) during the 1998 El Niño and 1999 La Niña in the Gulf of the Farallones, a region of the continental shelf off central California seaward of the Golden Gate and the southernmost ocean entry point for the species in North America. Juvenile salmon demonstrated greater growth during this strong El Niño, when water temperature anomalies of more than +3°C were recorded at local buoys, than during the similarly strong 1999 La Niña. Slopes of regressions of weight on length, length on age, and weight on age were all significantly greater for juvenile salmon during the 1998 El Niño compared with those in the 1999 La Niña. Daily otolith increment widths, an estimator of somatic growth, corroborated population data. Between June 1 and August 9, mean increment widths for juvenile chinook salmon in 1998 were 3.54 ± 0.03 μm, significantly larger than the 3.13 ± 0.03 μm found in juveniles during the same time interval in 1999. Condition factor for juvenile chinook salmon entering the ocean at the Golden Gate was the same in both years, but became significantly greater in ocean fish during the 1998 El Niño than in ocean fish during the 1999 La Niña. Energy storage was significantly greater in ocean juvenile salmon during the 1998 El Niño as well. Mean triacylglycerol/cholesterol ratios increased following ocean entry in 1998, whereas they declined in ocean juveniles during 1999. Thus, not only was growth better in the El Niño period compared with La Niña, but lipid accumulation was also better. Oceanographic data for 1998 indicated elevated temperatures, lower salinity, greater freshwater outflow from San Francisco Bay, northerly flowing coastal currents, and positive upwelling index anomalies. This combination of environmental factors resulted in greater zooplankton productivity that, in conjunction with higher temperatures, allowed metabolic processes to enhance growth. Although El Niño events have certainly produced large-scale, and often adverse, effects on ecosystems, the results of this study emphasize the importance of local oceanographic conditions to growth and other physiological and ecological processes.  相似文献

Otolith microstructure analysis and hydrodynamic modelling were combined to study growth patterns in young‐of‐the‐year (YoY) sprat, Sprattus sprattus, which were sampled in October 2002 in the central Baltic Sea. The observed ‘window of survival’, approximated by the distribution of back‐calculated days of first feeding (DFF), was narrow compared to the extended spawning season of sprat in the Baltic Sea (mean± SD = 22 June ± 14.1 days) and indicated that only individuals born in summer survived until October 2002. Within the group of survivors, individuals born later in the season exhibited faster larval, but more rapidly decreasing juvenile growth rates than earlier born conspecifics. Back‐calculated larval growth rates of survivors (0.48–0.69 mm day?1) were notably higher than those previously reported for average larval sprat populations, suggesting that the YoY population was predominantly comprised of individuals which grew faster during the larval stage. Daily mean temperatures, experienced across the entire YoY population, were derived from Lagrangian particle simulations and correlated with (1) detrended otolith growth and (2) back‐calculated, daily somatic growth rates of survivors. The results showed that abrupt changes in ambient temperature can be detected in the seasonal pattern of otolith growth, and that higher temperatures led to significantly faster growth throughout the entire age range of YoY sprat.  相似文献

The bottom culture of southward‐transplanted sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus in a subtropical fish farm was investigated in a field study at Dapeng Cove, Daya Bay, from January 5–August 5 2011, with the aim of finding the ideal period for culturing A. japonicus in fish farms, and developing an integrated multi‐trophic aquaculture (IMTA) in southern China. Results showed that the bottom‐cultured sea cucumbers survived well (100%) before summer, survival rates decreased to 65.00 ± 21.21% in July, and all animals had died at the end of the study. Specific growth rates of the sea cucumbers were high during winter (1.05 ± 0.03% d?1), decreased in early spring (0.44 ± 0.11% d?1) and became negative in the following months. Growth rate was mainly influenced by water temperature, dissolved oxygen and sulphide content; the anoxia caused by water column stratification at the seafloor in the summer were the main causes of mass mortality. Our results indicate that bottom culture in the temperate season (winter and spring, optimally from late November to early April) is a viable way to rear the deposit feeder A. japonicus underneath a subtropical fish farm.  相似文献
