Three dogs with a splenic hemangiosarcoma were imaged with conventional gray-scale ultrasound and no lesions were identified in the liver. After administration of intravenous ultrasound contrast medium (Definity) small, poorly enhanced, hypoechoic nodules were identified in the liver in each dog. The spleen and liver lesions were identified at surgery and the dogs underwent splenectomy and nodule biopsy. All lesions were identified histologically as hemangiosarcoma. These preliminary results suggest that contrast ultrasound may result in improved detectability of metastatic hepatic hemangiosarcoma.  相似文献

A 4-year-old cow initially examined because of hindlimb lameness had a waxing and waning course of illness for 31 weeks. Signs included lameness, swelling of the affected limb, and intermittent fever, and anorexia. Radiography and bacterial culturing suggested osteomyelitis. Terminally, there was peracute anemia and dyspnea. The final diagnosis was hemangiosarcoma of the metatarsus, with metastasis to the lungs.  相似文献

The present report describes a rare case of spontaneous hemangiosarcoma in a nine-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rat. At necropsy, multiple white nodules of various sizes were observed on and within the enlarged spleen and liver and were histopathologically determined to be composed of spindle- to oval-shaped cells that showed invasive growth without encapsulation and were arranged solidly but partially in whorls or faint alveolar patterns with vascular-like spaces containing small clefts or erythrocytes in the tumor mass. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that most of the tumor cells were strongly positive for vimentin, von Willebrand factor (vWF) and CD34 but negative for podoplanin. In addition, electron microscopic examination revealed the presence of Weibel-Palade bodies in the cytoplasm of the tumor cells. Based on these findings, this case was diagnosed as a hemangiosarcoma. The splenic masses were larger than the hepatic ones, with tumor cells mainly observed at periportal regions with tumor embolism in the liver, suggesting that primary hemangiosarcoma initially developed in the spleen before metastasizing.  相似文献

Spontaneous hemangiosarcoma in young rats is rare. In this report, we describe a case of a spontaneous hemangiosarcoma in the spleen and liver of young rats. At necropsy, multiple pale red masses were observed in the spleen. Histopathologically, solid growth and haphazardly arranged neoplastic cells were observed, although no characteristic growth pattern was observed. In contrast, irregularly sized small slit-shaped spaces containing erythrocytes were found among the neoplastic cells. Reticular fibers incompletely surrounding the neoplastic cells were observed by silver staining. Immunohistochemistry revealed that the neoplastic cells were positive for vWF and CD34. Electron microscopic examination revealed that the neoplastic cells had erythrocytes in the lumen and Weibel-Palade bodies in the cytoplasm and were arranged along a discontinuous basal lamina. These features indicate that the tumor originated from vascular endothelial cells. Based on these results, the tumor was diagnosed as a hemangiosarcoma in the spleen and liver.  相似文献

The present article reports a case of multicentric hemangiosarcoma in a 22-year-old Warmblood mare presented for recurrent fever and weight loss. Thoracic ultrasonography showed multiple small areas of pulmonary consolidation. Ultrasonography in the region of the right liver lobe showed the presence of a rounded mass, approximately 24 × 19 cm2 in size, extending from the 9th to 14th rib of the right side, characterized by multiple fluid-filled cavities and hypo- and hyperechoic rounded areas. On the left side, several hyperechoic rounded areas were detected in the spleen. Because of sudden onset of hemoperitoneum and worsening of the clinical conditions, the mare was humanely destroyed. Necroscopy confirmed the presence of hepatic, splenic, and pulmonary lesions, and showed further nodules on the stomach wall. The microscopic appearance of the lesions was consistent with hemangiosarcoma with multiple visceral metastases. Because the reported prevalence of equine hemangiosarcoma is as low as 0% to 0.7%, this case report may provide further information and describe one of the possible ultrasonographic patterns of multicentric hemangiosarcoma in horses.  相似文献

Hypoglycemia associated with nonislet cell tumor was found in 13 dogs. In each dog, clinical signs were related directly to adrenergic and neuroglucopenic effects of hypoglycemia and included collapsing episodes, tremors, restlessness, weakness, and grand mal seizures that were responsive to glucose administration. Eight of the dogs had hepatocellular carcinoma; surgical resection of the tumor achieved remission of clinical signs in 3 of these dogs. Other hepatic tumors associated with hypoglycemia included leiomyosarcoma and hemangiosarcoma involving solitary lobes of the liver. Nonhepatic tumors included splenic hemangiosarcoma, diffuse metastatic melanoma, and salivary gland adenocarcinoma.  相似文献

The medical records of 18 dogs in which ultrasonography was useful in making a diagnosis of splenic hemangiosarcoma were reviewed. Splenic ultrasonography revealed masses with echo patterns that ranged from anechoic fluid to hyperechoic tissue. In 7 dogs, metastasis was detected ultrasonographically as anechoic to hypoechoic lesions in the liver.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine prevalence of splenic hemangiosarcoma in anemic dogs with a splenic mass and hemoperitoneum requiring a transfusion and to identify factors that could differentiate between dogs with hemangiosarcoma and dogs with other splenic masses at the time of hospital admission. DESIGN: Retrospective case series. ANIMALS: 71 dogs. PROCEDURES: Medical records, blood bank logs, and histologic reports of dogs with a splenic mass and hemoperitoneum that required a transfusion between 2003 and 2005 were reviewed. Dogs that received a transfusion of packed RBCs, were splenectomized, and had a definitive histologic diagnosis were included. RESULTS: Signalment of dogs was similar to that in other reports. Malignant splenic neoplasia was identified in 54 of 71 (76.1%) dogs, whereas 17 of 71 (23.9%) dogs had a benign splenic lesion. Of 54 dogs with malignant splenic neoplasia, 50 (92.6% [70.4% of all dogs]) had splenic hemangiosarcoma. In addition, dogs with splenic hemangiosarcoma had significantly lower total solids (TS) concentrations and platelet counts at admission. Finally, hemoperitoneum was strongly associated with a diagnosis of splenic hemangiosarcoma. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In this clinical population of dogs, prevalence of hemangiosarcoma was higher than in other studies. Dogs with hemangiosarcoma in this study had significantly lower TS concentrations and platelet counts at the time of admission, compared with values for dogs with other splenic masses. No other markers were useful in differentiating dogs with hemangiosarcoma. It is important to discuss the prevalence of and poor prognosis associated with hemangiosarcoma with owners when they are contemplating whether to proceed with treatment.  相似文献

Bone haemangiosarcoma in a young Belgian malinois initially presented as an abscess involving the Tight 10th rib. The dog responded promptly to abscess drainage and antibiotics. Anaemia and thrombocytopenia began one week later and ultrasonography revealed splenic and liver lesions. Exploratory surgery identified tumour masses in the spleen, liver, lung and rib. Histopathological diagnosis was hemangiosarcoma, possibly of bone origin.  相似文献

Two ferrets were presented to the authors' clinic. Hemoperitoneum was diagnosed in one ferret, and an abdominal mass was palpated in the other. One ferret was euthanized and necropsied, and one ferret underwent exploratory laparotomy and liver lobectomy. In both cases, the histopathologic diagnosis was hepatic hemangiosarcoma.  相似文献

Fifteen dogs with hemangiosarcoma were treated with a combination of vincristine, doxorubicin, and cyclophosphamide after incisional or excisional biopsy. The median survival for all fifteen dogs was 172 days (mean survival = 316 days). The median survival for those dogs with splenic hemangiosarcoma was 145 days (mean survival = 271 days) as compared with previously published median survival times in dogs with splenic hemangiosarcoma treated with surgery alone of 19 to 65 days. Toxicities included neutropenia (11/15), severe gastroenteritis (4/15), cardiotoxicity (3/15), and sepsis (2/15). The authors conclude that vincristine, doxorubicin, and cyclophosphamide chemotherapy may be an efficacious treatment modality in dogs with hemangiosarcoma and is associated with acceptable toxicity.  相似文献

Eight cats with visceral or cutaneous hemangiosarcoma were evaluated, and unusual metastatic and clinicopathologic behavior was evident in each. Cutaneous hemangiosarcoma is generally believed to be locally aggressive and slow to metastasize. These 8 cats with cutaneous hemangiosarcoma, however, developed metastatic disease after initial surgical resection; only 1 had local regrowth of the tumor. All cats with visceral hemangiosarcoma had metastasis at the time of diagnosis, which is consistent with cats of other reports. Three of 8 cats had evidence of disseminated intravascular coagulation, including increased prothrombin time and partial thromboplastin time, decreased number of platelets, and anemia. These potential complications need to be considered when planning diagnostic and treatment protocols.  相似文献

Standard treatments for canine hemangiosarcoma include surgery and chemotherapy with doxorubicin, but in spite of treatment most dogs with this disease die within 6 months of diagnosis. Tumor growth and metastasis are angiogenesis dependent. Antiangiogenic drugs such as minocycline may provide therapeutic benefits in cancer patients. The purpose of this prospective study was to evaluate the efficacy of chemotherapy with doxorubicin and minocycline, an antiangiogenic agent, in dogs with hemangiosarcoma. Eighteen dogs with histologically confirmed hemangiosarcoma of any stage were treated with doxorubicin, cyclophosphamide, and minocycline. Complete staging was performed before and during the treatment period to assess remission status and response to therapy. No statistically significant difference was found in survival between the dogs treated with chemotherapy and minocycline, and historical controls consisting of dogs that received chemotherapy alone. Postmortem examination revealed widespread metastasis, suggesting that minocycline is ineffective as a single antiangiogenic agent in canine hemangiosarcoma.  相似文献

Hemangiosarcoma in the cat: retrospective evaluation of 31 surgical cases   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Hemangiosarcoma was diagnosed in 31 cats. Diagnosis was confirmed by surgical biopsy. Locations of the primary tumors were the abdominal cavity (15 cats), sc tissue (13 cats), thoracic cavity (2 cats), and nasal cavity (1 cat). Nine (60%) of the 15 cats with abdominal hemangiosarcoma had extrathoracic evidence of metastasis: this was not found in the other cats. Of the cats with tumors located in the sc tissue, 6 of 10 (60%) evaluated on a long-term basis had local recurrence of the tumor. Eleven cats were not available for follow-up evaluation, 3 cats were euthanatized at the time of surgery, and 2 others were euthanatized within the first postoperative week subsequent to histologic diagnosis of hemangiosarcoma. Of the remaining 15 cats, 4 with abdominal hemangiosarcoma and 5 with hemangiosarcoma of the sc tissue died at means of 22 and 44 weeks, respectively.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the biological behavior and prognostic factors associated with hemangiosarcoma in cats. DESIGN: Retrospective case series. ANIMALS: 53 cats with hemangiosarcoma. PROCEDURES: Data were retrieved from a state veterinary diagnostic laboratory, 3 veterinary colleges, and a private practice. RESULTS: Cutaneous and subcutaneous tumor locations were more common than visceral (abdominal and thoracic) and oral locations. Surgical excision was the primary treatment in 47 cats. Tumor-free surgical margins were more likely in cutaneous than subcutaneous lesions and were associated with longer survival times. Local recurrence was observed in 6 of 12 cats with subcutaneous lesions for which follow-up was available. Metastatic disease was detected in 5 of 13 cats with adequate staging at initial diagnosis. A sixth cat had pulmonary metastases at the time of euthanasia. In 4 of 10 cats with visceral hemangiosarcoma, the diagnosis was made at necropsy or they were euthanized at the time of diagnosis. Adjuvant therapy was uncommonly used. Eighteen of the 21 known deaths or euthanasias were tumor-related. Higher mitotic counts (> 3 in 10 hpfs) were associated with shorter survival times. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Subcutaneous hemangiosarcoma was more biologically aggressive than the cutaneous form and was more likely to recur locally and result in euthanasia or death of the cat. Metastatic potential of the cutaneous and subcutaneous forms may be greater than previously reported. Visceral hemangiosarcoma is associated with a grave prognosis.  相似文献

Splenic hemangiosarcoma has morphological similarities to benign nodular hyperplasia. Computed tomography (CT) texture analysis can analyze the texture of images that the naive human eye cannot detect. Recently, there have been attempts to incorporate CT texture analysis with artificial intelligence in human medicine. This retrospective, analytical design study aimed to assess the feasibility of CT texture analysis in splenic masses and investigate predictive biomarkers of splenic hemangiosarcoma in dogs. Parameters for dogs with hemangiosarcoma and nodular hyperplasia were compared, and an independent parameter that could differentiate between them was selected. Discriminant analysis was performed to assess the ability to discriminate the two splenic masses and compare the relative importance of the parameters. A total of 23 dogs were sampled, including 16 splenic nodular hyperplasia and seven hemangiosarcoma. In each dog, total 38 radiomic parameters were extracted from first-, second-, and higher-order matrices. Thirteen parameters had significant differences between hemangiosarcoma and nodular hyperplasia. Skewness in the first-order matrix and GLRLM_LGRE and GLZLM_ZLNU in the second, higher-order matrix were determined as independent parameters. A discriminant equation consisting of skewness, GLZLM_LGZE, and GLZLM_ZLNU was derived, and the cross-validation verification result showed an accuracy of 95.7%. Skewness was the most influential parameter for the discrimination of the two masses. The study results supported using CT texture analysis to help differentiate hemangiosarcoma from nodular hyperplasia in dogs. This new diagnostic approach can be used for developing future machine learning-based texture analysis tools.  相似文献

Seven cases of cutaneous hemangioma and nine of cutaneous hemangiosarcoma were diagnosed from biopsy specimens of 15 Domestic Shorthairs of 5,091 cats that were examined by necropsy or biopsy during the 5-year period from 1 January 1986 through 31 December 1990. All but three cats were male. Tumor cells of both hemangiomas and hemangiosarcomas were immunoreactive for factor VIII-related antigen and for vimentin by the avidin biotin peroxidase complex method. In cats with a median age of 10 years, hemangiomas occurred in skin with pigmented hair in six of seven cases without apparent site predilection. These solitary tumors did not recur after excision although one cat (No. 3) subsequently developed cutaneous hemangiosarcoma at another site. Seven of nine hemangiosarcomas occurred in dermis and subcutis of the head, usually on the pinna. All five hemangiosarcomas of the head, for which cutaneous pigmentation could be determined, occurred in unpigmented skin. Cats with hemangiosarcoma had a median age of 12.5 years at the time of diagnosis. Metastasis has not been documented, but hemangiosarcoma has recurred, from 1 month to 2 years after excision, in 6/7 cats that were studied.  相似文献

A 20-yr-old female Père David's deer (Elaphurus davidianus) died following a 3-wk history of depression, anorexia, and progressive respiratory distress. At necropsy, numerous soft to firm, tan or blood-filled nodular structures, 1-6 cm in diameter, were noted in the lung and the visceral and parietal pleura and within the mediastinum. Similar nodules were also found in the liver, spleen, kidney, and lymph nodes. Histologically, the nodules were diagnosed as hemangiosarcoma. A benign teratoma was present in the left ovary.  相似文献

Infection with Borrelia burgdorferi caused arthritis, myocarditis, glomerulonephritis, and pneumonitis in a cow. Spirochetes were detected by use of immunofluorescent staining in liver and lung specimens and were isolated from the liver. The carpal, stifle, and tarsal joints had marked synovial proliferation, and synovial fluid obtained from these joints had high antibody titers against B burgdorferi. The cow was from an area of Wisconsin that is not endemic for borreliosis.  相似文献

Introduction: Hemangiosarcoma is a malignant neoplasm of vascular endothelium occurring most frequently in older large breed dogs. Noncutaneous hemangiosarcoma is highly metastatic (>80% at diagnosis). Surgery is the primary method of treatment; however, even with adjuvant chemotherapy the prognosis for long‐term survival is low. Hence, new therapies are needed. The sedative‐hypnotic drug thalidomide (alpha‐N‐phthalimidoglutarimide) was withdrawn from general distribution in the 1960's after recognition of its teratogenicity and association with phocomelia. Recently, discredited thalidomide is making a comeback for its immunomodulatory and antiangiogenesis properties to treat inflammatory, infectious, and neoplastic diseases in people. Thalidomide can inhibit the proliferation of blood vessels associated with tumour development, thereby stopping or slowing tumour growth (similar to the devastating effect of the in utero interference with the blood supply of the developing limbs of the fetus). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to retrospectively obtain the results of thalidomide therapy for canine hemangiosarcoma. A prospective study for the use of thalidomide therapy for the treatment of canine hemangiosarcoma was also planned. Materials and Methods: Fourteen dogs with histologically diagnosed hemangiosarcoma were retrospectively entered into the study. Dogs were treated at 100–400 mg per day. Unfortunately, a legal, consistent source of thalidomide for treatment of dogs could not be obtained; therefore, the prospective study was postponed. Results: The median survival was 61 days with a range of 0 days to 2 years. Conclusions: Only limited efficacy data are available so far to define the clinical utility of thalidomide in canine hemangiosarcoma. However, in this pilot study there were prolonged responses to thalidomide in some patients which prompts a phase 2 investigation of thalidomide in canine hemangiosarcoma. The optimal dose and schedule of administration in dogs remains to be determined but the absence of myelosuppressive and other important adverse effects suggests thalidomide could be used in combination with chemotherapy. We conclude that thalidomide (or its analogues) could open the possibility for novel treatment that targets tumours and their microenvironment.  相似文献
