Summary In oat cv. Delphin (Bonda x Carstens Vii) two complementary genes were found conferring resistance to sixteen cultures of ten crown rust (Puccinia coronata Cda. var. avenae Fraser ET Led.) races. The complementary genes showed full dominance to eight races and incomplete dominance to two races.  相似文献

Summary Mixtures of genotypes are frequently unstable in composition when propagated over succesive generations. This study was designed to test whether a multiline cultivar of oats (Avena sativa L.) created to control crown rust disease (caused by Puccinia coronata Cda.) would reflect differential near-isogenic line survivals when propagated under conditions of either presence or absence of rust. An oat multiline cultivar synthesized from near-isogenic lines that had different genes for resistance to crown rust was propagated under rust-free and rust epiphytotic conditions for four successive generations. In the rust-free environment, one near-isogenic line. CI 9192, which was inferior in yielding ability, was reduced significantly from 20% to 10% of the mixture, and CI 9184, which has no yield deviation from normal, increased from 20% to 38%. The other three near-isogenic lines were stable at about 20%. Also, in the rust line of descent. CI 9192 and CI 9184, respectively, decreased and increased significantly. Our results have implications with respect to seed production practices for multiline cultivars: they also raise the question of whether a multiline is stable enough in composition to be called a cultivar.Journal Paper No. J-10027 from the Iowa Agric. and Home Econ. Summary Molecular mapping is a promising strategy for studying and understanding traits with complex genetic control, such as partial resistance to oat crown rust. The objectives of this research were to develop molecular maps from the progenies of the cross UFRGS7 (susceptible) × UFRGS910906 (partially resistant) and to identify QTLs (quantitative trait loci) associated to partial resistance to oat crown rust in two generations of that population.DNA of 86 genotypes of the F2 and 90 genotypes of the F6 UFRGS7 × UFRGS910906 population were used to generate AFLP markers. Molecular maps were constructed using Mapmaker Exp. 3.0 and QTLs for partial resistance to oat crown rust were identified with Mapmaker/QTL software. Five hundred and fifty seven markers in the F2 and 243 markers in the F6 generations were identified. The F2 map integrated 250 markers in 37 linkage groups. The F6 map integrated 86 markers in 17 linkage groups.Five QTLs were identified for partial resistance to oat crown rust in the F2 generation and three QTLs in the F6. The QTL identified on F6 through the PaaaMctt340 AFLP marker showed consistency across two environments and two generations (F4 and F6), and appear to have potential for marker-assisted selection in oat.  相似文献

New sources of resistance to crown rust, Puccinia coronata f. sp. avenae (Eriks.), the major fungal disease of cultivated oat, Avena sativa L. (2n = 6x = 42), are constantly needed due to frequent, rapid shifts in the virulence pattern of the pathogen. Crown rust resistance identified in the diploid oat A. strigosa (Schreb.) (2n = 2x = 14) accession CI6954SP was transferred into cultivated oat using two methods: direct cross of the diploid to a hexaploid cultivar facilitated by embryo rescue, and initial cross of the diploid to a wild tetraploid oat to make a synthetic hexaploid for subsequent crossing to a hexaploid cultivar. Two tetraploids, a crown rust resistant A. murphyi (Ladiz.) accession P12 and a susceptible A. insularis (Ladiz.) accession INS-1, were used in the 2x·4x crosses. Resistant backcross-derived lines were recovered by both methods. Although the 2x·4x synthetic method did not require the laborious discovery and rescue of an infrequent initial hybrid embryo of the direct cross, the direct cross method provided more rapid backcross recovery of plants with high fertility, full transmission of resistance, and desired plant and seed phenotypes. A suppressor effect, present initially but segregating in backcrosses, appeared to come from the CI6954SP donor and is the same as, or analogous to, suppression by an oat line with the crown rust resistance gene Pc38. No resistance from A. murphyi P12 was detected in advanced generations when it was introduced either as a component of a synthetic hexaploid or in direct crosses to A. sativa, indicating suppression of its resistance in interploidy combinations. That the dominant resistance gene transferred from CI6954SP and a gene Pc94 introgressed earlier from a different A. strigosa accession may be the same or quite similar to one another is indicated by their in-common specificity to suppression of resistance expression, susceptibility to a newly recovered rust isolate, and close linkage to the molecular marker SCAR94-2. The introgressed resistance genes from the different sources, even if the same, may have different cultivar genomic introgression sites, which would allow tests of dosage effects on resistance expression.  相似文献

Summary An accession of Avena fatua L. subsp. fatua v. glabrata Peterm. subv. pseudo-basifixa Thell. (A. fatua L. CS Sel. No. 1), collected in Czechoslovakia in 1971, was found to be resistant to a wide range of crown rust races. Analyses of crosses of this oat with cvs. Weikuss, Leanda, Mona, Rodney A, Rodney B, Rodney M, Dodge and K 316 indicated that the resistance of A. fatua CS Sel. No. 1 is conditioned by one recessive gene which is in interaction with one partially dominant gene with additive effect. The expression of rust reaction was affected by temperature. The crown rust resistance genes of A. fatua L. CS Sel. No. 1 were non-allelic with stem rust resistance genes Pg-2 (A) and Pg-4(B).  相似文献

Summary The oat line Pc54 was found to be resistant to powdery mildew under both field and glasshouse conditions. The ratio of resistant to susceptible F2 and F2 progeny of a cross between a selection from the Pc54 line (Cc7422) and a susceptible cultivar (Selma) showed that, in addition to carrying the crown rust resistance gene Pc54 and the pg15 gene for stem rust resistance, the mildew resistance of the Pc54 line was conditioned by a single incompletely dominant gene along with additional factors which modified the expression of resistance. Previous results, that there was no linkage between genes Pc54 and Pg15, were confirmed. In addition, there was no evidence of linkage between the mildew resistance gene and gene Pc54. Evaluation of selections from within the Pc54 line showed that the expression of both stem rust and mildew resistance was modified by, or linked to, plant height. The effectiveness of genes Pc54 and Pg15, as measured by virulence frequencies, in central and eastern Europe is described.  相似文献

Summary Yield formation of four Finnish and three Nordic oat varieties and 12 breeding lines developed at the Hankkija Plant Breeding Institute was studied during four different growing seasons (1986–1989). Seventeen characteristics were measured, including traits representing the date of maturity and architecture of the oat stand. The variation between genotypes in the examined traits was studied by means of two-way analysis of variance. The relationship between grain yield and morpho-physiological traits was studied by means of simple correlation analysis and stepwise regression analysis. The present study, carried out in highly dissimilar growing seasons, showed that ideotype breeding in the northern growing areas is likely to be successful only in moderate to optimal growing conditions. Based on the findings of this study, a productive oat ideotype for northern cultivation is composed of traits such as early maturation, high phytomass production with a high panicle weight resulting from a large number of grains. short straw length (high resistance to lodging), and reduced tillering. The importance of other factors influencing oat breeding in northern growing conditions is discussed.  相似文献

Summary We tested three sets of oat varieties for grain yield in a series of environments and observed that generally more than 80% of the yield variation for individual varieties was due to linear regression response. Mean yields for varieties were significantly variable in all three sets, and regression response indexes were significantly variable in two of them.Mean yields over the three sets were correlated with regression response indexes with r=0.61. Associations of mean yield with the three stability parameters (i.e., coefficient of determination, mean square for deviations from regression, and ecovalence) were low and usually not significant. The correlation of regression response indexes with coefficients of determination was 0.42, but neither of the other stability parameters was associated with the response indexes. The three stability parameters were closely correlated with one another. Our materials were selected varieties, so evidently our results suggest what can be accomplished in breeding for combinations of mean production, production response, and productiom stability.Journal Paper No.J-9092 of the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station, Ames, Iowa, USA 50011. Summary Hexaploid and octoploid tritordeums and their parents Hordeum chilense and Triticum spp. were screened for resistance to isolates of wheat and barley yellow and brown rusts. All H. chilense lines were highly resistant to both wheat and barley brown rust, few lines were susceptible to wheat yellow rust while susceptibility to barley yellow rust was common. In general the resistance of tritordeum is predominantly contributed by the wheat parent and apparently the genes for resistance in H. chilense are inhibited in their expression by the presence of the wheat genome.Abbreviations WYR wheat yellow rust - WBR wheat brown rust - BYR barley yellow rust - BBR barley brown rust  相似文献

Summary Relationships that exist among grain yielding ability and response and stability of grain yields when tested over variable environments were examined. Two sets of oats lines were tested over many environments that had wide ranges in productivities. The lines in each set were divided into high-, medium-, and low-yielding groups on the basis of means across all environments, and variance components for genotype × environment interactions and means of regression responses and coefficients of determination were computed for the three yield categories in each set.Mean grain yields for the high-, medium-, and low-yielding groups across both sets of oats lines were 2.7, 2.3, and 1.9 Mg ha-1, respectively. Coefficients of variability for the genotype × environment interaction were 18%, 16%, and 12% for the high-, medium-, and low-yielding categories, respectively. Means for regression responses were 1.22 for the high group, 0.99 for the medium, and 0.78 for the low. Most responses for the high and low groups were significantly different from 1.0. Means for coefficients of contingency were 0.63, 0.56, and 0.51 for the high-, medium-, and lowyielding groups, respectively. There was a positive relationship between mean grain yield and response of grain yield to improving environments. Thus, high yielding lines are also the responsive lines. Our study gave conflicting results about stability of production for the three yield groups. Coefficients of variation for genotype × environment interaction indicated that the high-yielding group was more interactive with environments than were the medium- and low-yielding ones: However, the means for coefficients of contingency indicated that the high yielding group was the most stable.Journal Paper No. J-12128 of the Iowa Agric. and Home Econ. Summary The gene for mildew resistance has been succesfully transferred into the cultivated oat from the wild oat species Avena barbata by means of an irradiation-induced translocation. The translocation has been shown to involve the long arm of chromosome ST21 of A. sativa, the short arm, the centromere and a segment of the long arm of the barbata chromosome. The transmission of the translocation is normal in the cultivar Manod in which it was originally isolated. When the translocation was transferred into other cultivars of oats, transmission through the male gametes was found to be impaired in some genotypic backgrounds. However, there was no evidence that the translocation had any deleterious effect on development and fertility in a range of cultivars. The translocation was shown to involve an exchange between nonhomoeologous chromosomes. The behaviour of the translocation in diverse genotypes indicated that the translocation was a new source of mildew resistance that could be easily used in a breeding programme.  相似文献

A set of T. aestivum-L. elongatum chromosome substitution lines was tested for yellow rust resistance at the seedling stage. Inheritance of the resistance and esterase-5 (Est-5) variation were studied. The results demonstrated that L.elongatum carried a new gene(s) conferring yellow rust resistance. This gene was dominant and located on chromosome 3E of L. elongatum. The biochemical locus encoding Est-5was also located on chromosome 3E, and co-segregated with theYr gene(s) in the wheat background. The transmission frequencies of chromosome 3E in 3E(3A) × CS, 3E(3B) × CS and 3E(3D) × CS hybrids were scored.None of the hybrids transmitted the alien chromosome at thetheoretical maximum rate, but the transmission frequencies ofchromosome 3E in F2 populations of 3E(3A) × CS and 3E(3D) × CS were significantly higher than in thatof 3E(3B) × CS.  相似文献

Summary Previously identified segregant lines of oats with levels of adult plant resistance to powdery mildew (Erysiphe graminis f.sp. avenae) better than the resistant parent maintained this high level of resistance in field nurseries over two growing seasons. This enhancement was not expressed on inoculated detached leaves under laboratory conditions where no differences between the more resistant parent cv. Maldwyn and the most resistant segregants was detected. Reduced resistance was not detected in tests where leaf segments of the transgressive lines were inoculated with trained isolates. Problems associated with selecting for adult plant resistance under both field and laboratory conditions are discussed.  相似文献

Summary Four selection strategies were used on four sets of oat lines to select for grain yield. Two of these used uniform environments whereby sequential selection of the high-yielding lines occurred in continuous high- or continuous low-productivity environments. These are referred to as high and low uniform selection strategies, respectively. The other two selection strategies were conducted by sequential selection of the high-yielding lines in alternating high- and low-productivity environments. They are referred to as high and low shuttle selection strategies, respectively, with high and low designating the productivity of the first environment in the sequence. After three or four cycles of selection, the surviving lines and a random sample from each set were evaluated for mean grain yield, grain yield response to improving environments, and stability of grain yield, in a range of environments typical of oat production on Iowa farms.Grain yield and regression response for all selection strategies, when calculated across all sets of lines, were significantly greater than corresponding values for random samples. Stability was unchanged. The uniform-high and uniform-low strategies gave the greatest and the smallest gains in mean grain yield, respectively, with the shuttle strategies giving intermediate gains. Shuttle selection in predominantly high-productivity environments increased grain yield more than shuttle selection in predominantly low-productivity environments. The uniform-strategy followed by the shuttle-high strategy identified entries with superior performance in high productivity environments. Increased gain in mean grain yield across all environments was associated with increased number of selection cycles conducted in high-productivity environments.Journal Paper No. J-15252 of the Iowa Agric. and Home Econ. Summary A set of 21 monosomics of Novosadska Rana-1 was used to locate the rust resistance genes of Lüqiyu, a stripe rust resistant line developed by BAU and Yantar, a leaf rust resistant wheat introduced from Bulgaria. The resistance of the former to p. striiformis race C25 was conditioned by a dominant gene located on chromosome 2B, whereas that of the latter to P. recondita race CL3 was controlled by two complementary dominant genes located on chromosomes 5A and 1D, respectively. The relationship of the stripe rust resistance gene in Lüqiyu to Yr5, Yr7 or Yr Suwon' all located on chromosome 2B is unknown. The two complementary leaf rust resistance factors in Yantar appear to be new.  相似文献

Summary Nine transfers of leaf rust (Puccinia recondita Rob. ex Desm.) resistance to wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) from Agropyron elongatum Host. Beauv., Triticum speltoides Tausch and rye (Secale cereale L.) were backcrossed up to 10 times to commercial wheat cultivars. The objective was to study the effect of the transfers on agronomic and quality characters and to make them available in desirable genetic backgrounds. The results varied greatly for different transfers. In four cases no promising material was obtained even after nine backcrosses. However, for the remaining five transfers material with potential as a new cultivar was obtained.  相似文献

Characterisation of new oat germplasm for resistance to powdery mildew   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Summary Wild oat accessions from the Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research (IPK) Gatersleben were selected as potential sources of resistance to powdery mildew (Erysiphe graminis f.sp. avenae). The Avena strigosa accessions AVE 128, AVE 488 and AVE 264, along with A. occidentalis accession CAV 3889 showed high levels of mildew resistance in tests at early and late growth stages over two years; the latter is a particularly useful source because it is a hexaploid species. Moderate levels of resistance were also found in A. fatua accession AVE 1981, AVE 2032 and A.sterilis accession AVE 1373 but this could be due to the later maturity of these genotypes.  相似文献

Summary Variation for resistance toPuccinia graminis f.sp.tritici, P. recondita f.sp.tritici andP. striiformis was induced in theTriticum aestivum cultivar Lalbahadur using nitrosomethyl urea. Variations were isolated from the M2 population in the post-seedling stage in the field when infected with a mixture of races of each of the three rusts. Plants exhibiting simultaneous resistance to stem rust, leaf rust and yellow rust were indentified. Repeated screening in the subsequent generations confirmed the resistance of the mutant lines that are morphologically similar to the parental cultivar. The rust resistance of 20 mutant lines was also confirmed at the seedling stage using individual races of stem rust and leaf rust. The different patterns observed in the mutant lines tested against a wide range of races show that these lines can be used as components of a multiline. The patterns of variation compared with those of the known genes for resistance against the Indian races of the pathogens suggest that the mutations for rust resistance are due to factor different from those already known in bread wheat, providing a broadened genetic base for future breeding programmes.  相似文献

Summary Forty F6 lines, the two parental lines, and a susceptible check cultivar of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) were inoculated in the young flag leaf stage with leaf rust (Puccinia recondita f.sp. tritici) and evaluated for latent period, receptivity, and uredinium size in a greenhouse experiment. Genotypic (rg) and phenotypic (rp) correlations between latent period and uredinium size were –0.81 and –0.62, respectively. A negative correlation (rg=–0.50, rp=–0.41) was found between latent period and receptivity and a positive correlation (rg=0.28, rp=0.26) between uredinium size and receptivity was found. Area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) and final rust severity (FRS) obtained from a subsequent field study with common entries were negatively correlated with latent period and positively correlated with uredinium size. Correlations of receptivity with both AUDPC and FRS were not significant. The distributions of F6 family mean uredinia size and latent period were continuous between slow rusting and fast rusting parents: however, the distribution for receptivity was discrete. Narrow-sense heritability estimates were 63%, 57%, and 47% for uredinium size, latent period, and receptivity, respectively. Estimates of the minimum number of effective factors were three for latent period and three or four for the uredinium size and receptivity. The components are controlled by closely linked genes or due to pleotropic effects of the same gene.Abbeviations AUDPC - Area under the disease progress curve - FRS - Final rust severity  相似文献
