The Quaggy Joe potato variety is high-yielding and medium to medium-late maturing with attractive, round-oval, white-skinned, white-fleshed tubers with medium-shallow pink eyes. Its major use is expected to be as a maincrop tablestock variety. Quaggy Joe is resistant to the potato leafroll virus, and is also moderately resistant to early blight (Alternaria solani), dry rot (Fusarium sambucinum), and soft rot (Erwinia carotovora subsp.carotovora). Quaggy Joe tubers have shown very little shatter or blackspot bruising, but sprout earlier than Atlantic. Young plants have shown sensitivity to the herbicide metribuzin.  相似文献

Portage is moderately resistant toVerticillium alboatrum, andRhizoctonia solani, but its seed-pieces are sensitive to dry soil conditions; therefore, cut seed should be suberized before planting. Its major use is expected to be as a maincrop tablestock variety. Taste panels rated St. Johns better than or equal to Katahdin in texture, color, mealiness, and flavor. St. Johns tubers do not show the net necrosis caused by potato leafroll virus, and are resistant to golden nematode, corky ringspot, hollow heart, and blackspot bruising. St. Johns is also moderately resistant to greening, shatter bruise, verticillium wilt, early blight, common scab, the common race of late blight, leafroll,Fusarium sambucinum (dry rot) andErwinia carotovora (soft rot), although some breakdown has been reported in commercial storages. Its major use is expected to be for tablestock in areas where Katahdin and Ontario are now grown. Prestile tubers are slow to sprout in storage and do not show the net necrosis caused by potato leafroll virus, but are quite susceptible to heat necrosis. This variety is immune to potato virus X, and is moderately resistant to common scab (Streptomyces scabies), verticillium wilt (Verticillium albo-atrum), and early blight (Alternaria solani). Simcoe, a round, white, early potato variety with excellent boiling, baking and chipping qualities, was released by the University of Guelph, Agriculture Canada and the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food in 1981. Yield is comparable to that of Norchip while the chip color ratings and specific gravity are higher. Simcoe is resistant to mild mosaic and late blight, moderately resistant to common scab and moderately susceptible toRhizoctonia. The Mainestay potato variety is high-yielding and late-maturing producing attractive, round, white-skinned, white-fleshed tubers with medium-shallow eyes. Its major use is expected to be as a maincrop tablestock variety. Mainestay appearance ratings are similar to those of Katahdin, and greening in Mainestay tubers is less than in Kennebec. Most boil and bake qualities were rated equal to Katahdin in at least half of the tests, and Mainestay usually has a low incidence of internal defects. However, purple streak, heat necrosis, vascular discoloration, and heat sprouts have been seen on occasion. Mainestay tubers do not show the net necrosis caused by potato leafroll virus, and have shown very little hollow heart or blackspot bruising. Mainestay is susceptible to common scab and acid scab, but moderately resistant to verticillium wilt (Verticillium, albo-atrum andV. dahliae), early blight (Alternaria solani), rhizoctonia (Rhizoctonia solani), dry rot (Fusarium sambucinum), and pink rot (Phytophthora erythroseptica). It is moderately susceptible to the common race of late blight (Phytophthora infestans). Mainestay tubers are slow to mature after vine kill, and additional time is required prior to harvest in order to allow for proper periderm development and to reduce storage losses.  相似文献

Hampton is a golden nematode resistant variety suited for main season tablestock production. It is resistant toVerticillium wilt, but susceptible to scab and late blight. Hampton yields as well as Katahdin and produces essentially the same distribution of tuber sizes. Its shape is distinctively spherical with shallow eyes. Elkton is a medium to medium-late maturing potato variety with tan netted-skin, round-oval tubers, and white-flesh. Average marketable yields ranged from 76 % to 113 % of Atlantic and average specific gravities ranged from ?0.002 to ?0.006 less than Atlantic depending on location. Chip color processed directly from the field in southern locations or from storage in the northern locations is equivalent to Atlantic. Elkton is resistant to internal heat necrosis and hollow heart. Color and texture ratings of Elkton following baking, boiling and microwaving have been similar to Atlantic. Elkton is moderately resistant to early blight and Verticillium wilt; moderately susceptible to foliar late blight and susceptible to tuber late blight; moderately susceptible to powdery scab; and, susceptible to potato virus Y and potato virus S. Tobique is a chipping variety with good yield and table quality. It is resistant to Verticillium wilt,Fusarium sambucinum, Fusarium coeruleum, and virus Y. Tobique was originated at Fredericton, New Brunswick and is a product of the potato breeding program of Agriculture Canada. This variety has been under test in New Brunswick for fifteen years as seedling F61025. It has also been tested extensively in the Maritime Provinces and throughout Canada through the facilities of regional and national evaluation trials. Tobique was selected from a cross between the variety Cariboo and Fredericton seedling F45019. Cariboo was introduced in British Columbia as a maincrop variety of distinctive appearance and bruise resistance; also with resistance toVerticillium alboatrum andPhoma rot. Yukon Gold is a medium-early, yellow-fleshed potato cultivar with very good boiling, baking, and French-frying quality. It is not suitable for chips. In Ontario its yield is similar to Russet Burbank’s. Plants are susceptible to virus Y and slightly susceptible to virus leafroll but are resistant to mild mosaic. BelRus, a new russet potato variety, is medium late in maturity and adapted primarily for the Northeastern United States and northern Florida. Tubers are long, smooth and moderately flat with a heavy russet skin. Eyes are shallow and immediately adjacent skin is, for the most part, nonrussetted in the Northeastern U.S. Industry speaks of the BelRus there as the “white eyed russet.” BelRus is slightly higher in specific gravity than ‘Russet Burbank’, has a superior flavor when baked, and yields excellent french fries and flakes. Glycoalkaloid content of BelRus is quite low, being about 2 mg/100 g fresh tissue. BelRus is immune to virus A and tuber net necrosis; highly resistant to tuber heat necrosis, northern root knot nematode (Meloidogyne hapla), and the pinkeye bacterial disease; moderately resistant to scab, Verticillium wilt, leaf roll and potato virus Y. It is not resistant to either late blight or early blight, or viruses M, S, and X. Necrotic spotting of the foliage occurs following periods of high temperature and extended drought. BelRus has demonstrated high tolerance to bruising and storage rots incurred during harvest and handling. Shrinkage in bulk storage has been minimal. BelRus is recommended to be planted at about 25 cm (10 inches) in-the-row on 90 cm (36) rows with about 215 kg (180–200 lbs/acre), N2/ha in-the-row.  相似文献

A potato clone with frost resistant foliage designated Alaska Frostless has been selected from the progeny of crosses involvingSolanum acaule and commercial varieties. Its chromosome number is (2N=5X=60). Nearly mature vines have withstood field frosting at?3 C for 2 hours and have recovered from several frosts of?2 C. Yields in cwt per acre of tubers 2–3.5 inch in diameter have equaled those of Alaska's standard varieties. Dry matter of 21.7% is equivalent to that of the Green Mountain variety. Tubers are flattened, round, smooth and white with a nonuniform faintly purple blush after exposure to light. Culinary quality, flavor, and texture are very good.  相似文献

Soil samples from corky ringspot (CRS) problem fields of potato in the states of Washington and Oregon were collected and planted withNicotiana tabacum ‘Samsun NN’ tobacco to bait tobacco rattle virus (TRV) and to increaseParatrichodorus allius populations, the vector of TRV. Pathogenicity of three isolates of TRV was assessed on Russet Burbank and Russet Norkotah plants usingP. allius as the vector. The most severe CRS tuber symptoms were with TRV from Pasco, WA, followed by Umatilla, OR, and Mattawa, WA, indicating a distinct variation in virulence among virus isolates. The lowest number ofP. allius that transmitted TRV resulting in CRS symptoms on Russet Norkotah was three nematodes per 250 cm3 soil. When potato plants were exposed toP. allius at different times in their growth, tubers on older plants were more resistant than younger tubers to CRS. Severity of CRS tuber symptoms was correlated with age of potato plants in pot culture. Reproduction ofP. allius on potato roots did not influence the incidence and severity of tubers symptoms. Under similar conditions, Bintje, a variety known to be resistant to CRS, served as a host forP. allius, yet remained asymptomatic. The protocol employed in these studies is appropriate for testing potato germplasm for resistance to CRS.  相似文献

Somerset is also moderately resistant to infection by Alternaria solani (early blight), and is only moderately susceptible to Verticillium wilt. Somerset is more susceptible to both common and acid scab than Superior, but less susceptible than Kennebec and Katahdin. Fungi of the genusFusarium Link isolated in Perú from potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L. subsp.andigena Juz. & Buk.) affected by: i) wilt, ii) dry rot of stored tubers, iii) secondary rot in tubers affected by “cork” disease (potato mop-top virus?), caused dry rot when inoculated to tubers of Renaacimiento variety. The identification of some of theseFusaria suggests thatFusarium solani Snyder & Hansen is associated with wilt and dry rot, andFusarium oxysporum Snyder & Hansen with rot secondary to cork disease. Tubers of eight potato varieties inoculated with fourFusaria representative of those isolated showed a great range in levels of susceptibility to colonization by theseFusaria, Sapa being the most susceptible variety, and Mantaro appearing to be the most resistant. These results suggest that useful levels of resistance toFusarium tuber rot are available in the Peruvian germ-plasm.  相似文献

Coastal Chip is a medium-late maturing potato chipping variety suitable for production in locations along the east coast of the United States where heat stress reduces internal quality of tubers. It yields as well as the variety Atlantic but is not as susceptible to heat necrosis. The specific gravity of Coastal Chip averages approximately 0.010 less than Atlantic at locations subject to heat stress. In the seed producing areas of Maine it’s specific gravity averages approximately 0.005 less than that of Atlantic. Tubers are round, netted-skinned, and have moderately deep stem and bud ends. Chips from Coastal Chip are slightly lighter in color than those produced by Atlantic. In mid-Atlantic states where heat stress adversely affects chip color Coastal Chip processes into chips for a slightly longer period of time after harvest than does Atlantic. Glycoalkaloid content of Coastal Chip averaged 7.9 mg/100 g fresh tissue. Sunburned (green) tubers of Coastal Chip develop purple streaks that remain following processing. Hills must be properly covered to reduce losses. Coastal Chip is resistant to race A of the golden nematode (Globodera rostochiensis) and potato virus A. It is tolerant to Verticillium wilt, more susceptible to common scab and Rhizoctonia than Atlantic and susceptible to potato virus X.  相似文献

Russette is a new, late maturing, russet potato variety adapted primarily for the northeastern United States and northern Florida. Tubers are oval to oblong, smooth with a medium-russet skin, and shallow eyes. Its specific gravity is similar to those of BelRus and Russet Burbank in areas of adaptation. Glycoalkaloid content is about 11 mg/100 g fresh weight. Baking quality is excellent, flesh is white, and best color of french fries is obtained from tubers stored at or above 13°C (55°F). Its long rest period makes it amenable to storage at a relatively high temperature before a chemical sprout inhibitor is needed. Russette is immune to virus A and leaf roll-induced tuber net necrosis; highly resistant to Verticillium wilt, tuber pinkeye, and tuber heat necrosis; and has good tolerance to scab, early blight, and Rhizoctonia infection of sprouts, stolon, and roots. Losses to rots and shrinkage in storage have been minimal. Russette is not resistant to viruses X, S, Y, and leaf roll and bacterial ring rot. Russette emerges to a stand about 10 days later than most varieties, however, subsequent vine growth is rapid until tuberization begins. Large-sized tubers may develop hollow heart under a late-season regime of high nitrogen and high moisture. A 22–30 cm (9″- to -12″) seed-piece spacing and 220 kg/ha (180 pounds/a) of nitrogen are recommended for production on mineral soils.  相似文献
