In a retrospective examination of histopathology reports from Aug. 1, 1985, through Sept. 31, 1987, 10 cases of small- or large-intestinal cryptosporidiosis (not epithelial cryptosporidiosis of the bursa of Fabricius) were found in chickens. Infection was evenly distributed among young chickens. Incidence of intestinal cryptosporidiosis increased during 1987. Although all infected birds were clinically ill, signs or gross lesions of intestinal disease were not always present. In all cases, mild to marked histologic lesions were associated with Cryptosporidium sp.; however, intestinal tracts were not cultured for other infectious agents. The numbers of Cryptosporidium sp. and character of inflammatory response were not significantly correlated. A difference (P = 0.01) among intestinal segment (small vs. large) infection with Cryptosporidium was seen. Light-microscopic appearance and organ distribution of Cryptosporidium sp. suggest that in addition to C. baileyi, other Cryptosporidium species infect chickens. Until the diagnostic procedure for outbreaks of gastrointestinal disease in poultry routinely includes histopathology, fecal flotation, and virus, bacteria, and chlamydia cultures, and until species of Cryptosporidium are isolated, identified, reported, and investigated experimentally, the importance of intestinal cryptosporidiosis in chickens will remain unknown.  相似文献

Cryptosporidium meleagridis oocysts, originally isolated from droppings of commercial turkey poults with increased mortality due to viral (reovirus) hepatitis and enteritis, were treated with peracetic acid to kill companion bacteria and viruses and then propagated by passage in young turkeys. Thirty-eight 5-day-old large white turkey poults were inoculated by crop gavage with 500,000 cryptosporidial oocysts and compared with 40 uninoculated poults. Cryptosporidial oocysts shedding began 3 days postinoculation (PI), peaked on day 4 PI, and persisted at a low level for the duration of the 21-day trial. Low to moderate cryptosporidial infections of the ileal mucosa (days 3, 6, and 15 PI), cecal mucosa (days 3, 6, and 21 PI), and bursa of Fabricius (days 6, 12, 15 and 21 PI) were found on histopathological examination. There were no differences in mean body weights between the inoculated and uninoculated groups, and no mortality or clinical signs of disease were seen in either group.  相似文献

Intestinal cryptosporidiosis in calves on a dairy farm   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Oocysts of Cryptosporidium species were identified in the faeces of scouring calves from a dairy farm. The faeces were watery and greenish yellow but the calves were usually alert and not desiccated when they were admitted to the clinic. Without treatment they became severely desiccated and recumbent within a few hours, but after symptomatic treatment they improved rapidly. The importance of cryptosporidiosis as a herd health problem is discussed.  相似文献

Intestinal malabsorption and cryptosporidiosis in an adult dog   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Chronic intestinal cryptosporidiosis was diagnosed as the cause of chronic diarrhea and weight loss in an adult dog without obvious signs of immunosuppression. Results of tests for digestive function suggested that the dog had impaired intestinal absorption or bacterial overgrowth. The nutrient malabsorption might have resulted in or have been caused by the cryptosporidiosis. Temporary clinical improvement without reduction in fecal oocyst concentration was noticed following treatment with clindamycin. The dog was euthanatized. At necropsy, the dog was found to have chronic lymphoplasmacytic enteritis and cryptosporidiosis. A veterinary student that worked in the ward where the dog was kept developed cryptosporidal diarrhea.  相似文献

An acute enteric disease of young pen-raised bobwhite quails was studied. Affected quails had white, watery diarrhea accompanied by dehydration and subsequent death. Mortality from hatch to 17 days of age ranged from 30 to 45% in the three flocks examined. Small intestines were thin-walled and distended with fluid and gas. Microscopic lesions in the intestinal tract consisted of villus atrophy, villus fusion, and sloughing of cells at the tip of the villi in duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. Cryptosporidium sp. and reovirus were identified in affected quails.  相似文献

Abomasal cryptosporidiosis in cattle   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
A 6-week-old calf and nine feedlot steers shed oocysts similar to Cryptosporidium muris-like oocysts. There were massive populations of this Cryptosporidium in the peptic glands of most of these animals. The oocysts were larger and more oval than the frequently reported type which is generated in the intestines of many animal species and thought to be similar to Cryptosporidium parvum. The pattern of shedding of this newly discovered Cryptosporidium in the steers was continuous over a period of months whereas the C. parvum-like oocysts cease to be shed 1 to several weeks after onset. The nature of the host-parasite interaction in abomasal cryptosporidiosis is yet to be determined. Morphologic changes that resulted from the interaction were an approximate 10% increase in abomasal mucosal thickness, widening of gland lumens in the middle region, and atrophy of epithelium in the same region.  相似文献

Fatal cryptosporidiosis in quail   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Young quails kept in wire-floored cages experienced high mortality, beginning at age 5 days, from diarrhea that was unresponsive to antibiotic therapy. At necropsy, the small intestine had clear fluid content and the cecum was distended by brown foamy fluid. Histopathologic findings in the small intestine were shortened villi with detached enterocytes at the tip. Cryptosporidium sp. (confirmed by electron microscopy) were numerous in the microvillous border. Neither bacterial nor viral pathogens were detected. No infection was established in day-old chickens gavaged with feces and intestinal contents from infected quails. Thorough cleansing of the cages followed by application of commercial bleach prevented recurrence.  相似文献

Severe pododermatitis is a common lesion in turkeys, unlike in broiler chickens. Both dietary factors (soybean meal, biotin, methionine) and poor litter conditions (wet litter) are documented etiologies of footpad lesions. In the United States and United Kingdom both farm managers and processors monitor lesions. The United Kingdom reports an average footpad relative score higher than that of the United States. In both countries, incidence in toms is higher than in hens. There is no significant difference by country. Data support no consistent association with other lesions (i.e., breast blisters or condemnations), breed, or performance parameters (i.e., weight gain or age). The litter type used in the United Kingdom is either straw or wood shavings, whereas in the United States producers predominantly use wood shavings. In the United Kingdom, diets are formulated with a higher protein, which affects the excreta and subsequent litter conditions. British United Turkey is the predominate breed in the United Kingdom. In the United States, three breeds, British United Turkey of America, hybrid, and Nicholas, are common. Recent research has demonstrated the association between biotin levels and pododermatitis. Factors associated with pododermatitis (such as production systems, wet litter, and stocking density) are discussed. There are some indications that increased stocking density is associated with pododermatitis lesions. Further research is needed to identify what management factors are associated with pododermatitis.  相似文献

Severe small-intestinal cryptosporidiosis was diagnosed in a chicken that had diarrhea, was weak, and had failed to thrive. Intestine segments also were parasitized by Eimeria sp. and bacteria. Disseminated foci of malignant lymphocytes were present in several organs. Spontaneously occurring intestinal cryptosporidiosis has not been reported in chickens.  相似文献

Cryptosporidial conjunctivitis was detected histologically in one of 17 eight-week-old ducks during an investigation into the cause of conjunctivitis. Another 80 ducks were examined histologically for cryptosporidial conjunctivitis over the next few months. No further cases were detected. Because only one infected bird was detected, it was concluded that the cryptosporidial infection was an incidental finding rather than a primary infection.  相似文献
