The performance of a whole-cell vaccine and the other vaccine with cellular membranes of Tritrichomonas foetus applied to heifers naturally challenged by mating with an infected bull was determined. Forty heifers were divided into three groups: a control group (n=16) without immunizing, another group (n=12) immunized with whole cells (10(8)/dose) and a third group (n=12) immunized with cellular membranes (300 micro g of membranes/dose protein). The females were subcutaneously vaccinated at 3-week on two occasions and received a third intravaginal booster dose. After 3 weeks of the last vaccinal doses, the heifers were served by a T. foetus infected bull over 90-day period. The mean duration of infection for membrane-vaccinated heifers was 60 days +/-25, compared with 63 days +/-35.8 of infection for whole-cell-vaccinated heifers and 79 days +/-41.3 for control heifers. Calving rates were 6/12 for membrane-vaccinated heifers, 3/12 for whole-cell-vaccinated animals, and 2/16 for control animals. Fetal mortality rates were 3/12 for membrane-vaccinated animals, 4/12 for those vaccinated with whole cells and 10/16 for control animals. These reproductive parameters were significantly different (P<0.05) between heifers vaccinated with membranes and control heifers. The hemolytic test and enzyme-linked immunoabsorbent assay (ELISA) with T. foetus antigen showed that serum immunoglobulins peaked before and during the breeding period. The heifers vaccinated with membranes developed an important response during the critical period of fetal loss, second and third month of the breeding time, and another month after the same period. The ELISA method was more sensitive and more reliable than the hemolytic test for the evaluation of the systemic immune response in females infected and/or vaccinated with T. foetus.  相似文献

Following the first diagnosis of campylobacteriosis in Jamaican cattle a field study was undertaken to determine the pathogenicity of Campylobacter fetus subspecies venerealis Jam (Jamaican strain) and to evaluate the effectiveness of vaccination in controlling the disease. A total of 46 nonpregnant yearling heifers and four two-year-old bulls were used in two separate experiments. The results showed that C fetus subspecies venerealis Jam readily colonised the reproductive tract of susceptible heifers and persisted in some animals (68 per cent of unvaccinated and 33 per cent of vaccinated animals) for the duration of the experiment. Pregnancy was confirmed in 13 of 18 (72 per cent) culture-negative heifers but in only eight of 28 (29 per cent) of the heifers with two or more positive cultures. Vaccination appeared to be curative because 44 per cent of vaccinated heifers were cleared of infection whereas 85 per cent of unvaccinated, inoculated heifers remained infected for at least 17 weeks. Vaccination improved the fertility level of the infected heifers threefold. Infection was not established in vaccinated bulls used for breeding infected heifers.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to compare the immune response to Neospora caninum in naturally infected heifers and heifers inoculated with a killed whole N. caninum tachyzoite preparation during the second trimester of gestation. Nine Holstein heifers were used in this study; three naturally infected heifers were born from seropositive dams, and six seronegative heifers were born from seronegative dams. Four seronegative heifers were subcutaneously vaccinated with a killed whole N. caninum tachyzoite preparation at weeks 13, 15 and 17 of gestation. A killed whole N. caninum tachyzoite preparation containing 45 mg of protein/5 ml dose was formulated with 70% of mineral oil adjuvant (13% consisting of Arlacel C, 85% Marcol 52 and 2% Tween-80). Similarly, two seronegative heifers (negative controls) were inoculated with mock-infected bovine monocytes in oil adjuvant. Humoral immune responses were tested by using an indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) and an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for detecting isotype specific antibodies. Cellular immune responses were assessed by lymphocyte proliferation test (LPT) and IFN-gamma production. N. caninum-specific antibody responses increased in immunized cattle by week 15 of gestation (mean reciprocal antibody titers 450+/-252), peaked at week 23 (mean 16,000+/-6400). Maximum antibody response in naturally infected heifers was observed at week 19 of gestation (mean: 3467+/-2810). Mean serum IFAT titers were significantly higher in immunized heifers compared with those in naturally infected heifers from weeks 17 to 25 (P < 0.05). Analysis of isotype specific antibodies in naturally infected heifers revealed a predominant IgG1 response in one heifer and a predominant IgG2 response in the other two. Similar titers of IgG1 and IgG2 occurred in immunized heifers. Control heifers remained seronegative throughout the study by IFAT and ELISA. Significant antigen-specific proliferation responses were only detected in naturally infected heifers in week 19 of gestation. Peripheral mononuclear blood cells (PMBC) from immunized animals produced IFN-gamma in similar concentrations to those of infected animals (P > 0.05). No abortion was seen in any experimental group; however, one calf from a vaccinated heifer died due to dystocia. All calves from vaccinated and control heifers were seronegative by IFAT at 6 months of age; in contrast, calves born from naturally infected heifers remained seropositive with titers > or = 200. Killed vaccine induced similar immune responses to those found in chronically, naturally infected cattle which did not abort; however, different immune pathways may be followed in vaccinated and natural infected heifers with differences in degree of protective immunity.  相似文献

The therapeutic efficacy of a Campylobacter fetus subsp venerealis bacterin was determined in experimentally infected bulls. Ten of twelve 5-year-old Angus bulls became infected after being infused intrapreputially with C fetus subsp venerealis. Of the 10 bulls, 6 were vaccinated with 5 ml of C fetus subsp venerealis vaccine on 2 occasions 4 weeks apart. Preputial washings of the vaccinated bulls were culturally negative by the 8th week after primary vaccination. None of the 18 heifers exposed to the vaccinated bulls became infected. The 4 infected, nonvaccinated bulls remained culturally positive to C fetus (P less than 0.002), and each bull infected at least 1 heifer (P less than 0.001). Two noninfected, nonvaccinated bulls remained culturally negative and did not infect any heifer. The 4 infected, nonvaccinated bulls were then vaccinated. Two bulls remained infected 9 weeks after primary vaccination, as determined by the virgin heifer test and cultural examination of preputial washings. Serologic data from 7 sampling periods were different (P less than 0.001) for vaccinated vs nonvaccinated bulls at 4 (against K antigen) or 6 (against O antigen) weeks after primary vaccination. Vaccination was effective in eliminating the infection in most of the infected bulls, but cannot be recommended as the sole measure of control in infected herds.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the ability of a modified-live virus (MLV) bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) type 1 (BVDV1) vaccine administered to heifers prior to breeding to stimulate protective immunity that would block transmission of virulent heterologous BVDV during gestation, thus preventing persistent infection of a fetus. ANIMAL: 40 crossbred Angus heifers that were 15 to 18 months old and seronegative for BVDV and 36 calves born to those heifers. PROCEDURE: Heifers were randomly assigned to control (n = 13) or vaccinated (27) groups. The control group was administered a multivalent vaccine where-in the BVDV component had been omitted. The vaccinated heifers were administered a single dose of vaccine (IM or SC) containing MLV BVDV1 (WRL strain). All vaccinated and control heifers were maintained in pastures and exposed to BVDV-negative bulls 21 days later. Thirty-five heifers were confirmed pregnant and were challenge exposed at 55 to 100 days of gestation by IV administration of virulent BVDV1 (7443 strain). RESULTS: All control heifers were viremic following challenge exposure, and calves born to control heifers were persistently infected with BVDV. Viremia was not detected in the vaccinated heifers, and 92% of calves born to vaccinated heifers were not persistently infected with BVDV. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: These results document that vaccination with BVDV1 strain WRL protects fetuses from infection with heterologous virulent BVDV1.  相似文献

The Nc-Spain 7 isolate of Neospora caninum, which was newly obtained from an asymptomatic congenitally infected calf, demonstrated a similar virulence as Nc-1 strain in mouse models. The aim of this study was to characterize the pathogenesis of Nc-Spain 7 isolate in cattle after experimental infection at 65 days of gestation. For this purpose, thirteen pregnant heifers were divided into three groups as follows: group A: 7 heifers inoculated with 1×10(8) tachyzoites of Nc-Spain 7 isolate; group B: 4 heifers inoculated with 1×10(8) tachyzoites of Nc 1 strain; and group C: 2 heifers received PBS. Serum samples were collected weekly and heparinized blood samples were collected three times (0, 28 and 42 days after inoculation) by jugular venipuncture. Placenta and fetal tissue samples were collected at time of necropsy. Specific antibody response in the dams was tested by IFAT, indirect ELISA, and rNcGRA7 and rNcSAG4 based-ELISA. Specific antibody response in fetal fluids was tested by IFAT. IFN-γ production was measured after in vitro culture of PBMC and the supernatant was assessed using a commercial kit (BOVIGAM). A significant increase in N. caninum antibody responses was detected in groups A and B by IFAT and by i-ELISA from day 14 after inoculation onwards. Besides, antibody response against rNCGra7 protein was also detected in all inoculated heifers by rNcGra7-based ELISA. Four fetuses from group A and one from group B were aborted between 3 and 5 weeks after infection. In the recovered fetuses, only 3 out of 4 fetal fluids from fetuses of group A and 1 out of 3 of group B were seropositive by IFAT, but all of them were positive by PCR. Transplacental transmission could be determined in all fetuses from groups A and B by PCR and/or IHC. Heifers of group C and their fetuses remained negative by all techniques. The results of this study demonstrate that the NC-Spain 7 isolate could be transmitted transplacentally, and produced fetal death and abortion in cattle.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To develop a reliable ELISA by use of a unique antigen preparation for serum IgG quantification after vaccination against Campylobacter fetus in cattle. ANIMALS: Twenty-six 24-month-old virgin Hereford heifers and a naturally infected Hereford bull. PROCEDURES: 5 antigens were prepared from a cell suspension of C fetus. Antigen preparations were the same as those reported in the literature, with the exception of antigens that were obtained by detergent solubilization of a C fetus cell suspension. For each antigen preparation, the optimal ELISA conditions for its immobilization were determined. Biotinylated antibodies against bovine immunoglobulins were obtained and used in the ELISA. Two groups of heifers were inoculated with commercial vaccines according to manufacturers' instructions. A control group was included. The immune response of vaccinated heifers and controls was followed for 6 months. RESULTS: Detergent solubilized C fetus antigens resulted in better ELISA performance than other antigen preparations. Antigens were optimally immobilized at neutral pH and low ionic strength. All antigen preparations saturated the well with the same amount of protein. The vaccination schedule that advised a booster resulted in higher antibody titers, which were sustained over a longer period than the other schedule. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In the vaccination of cattle against C fetus, the ELISA we have developed may be used to evaluate serum antibody concentrations in response to various vaccines and vaccination schedules. Our results indicate that it is advisable to include a booster in the immunization protocol.  相似文献

Seven batches of 25% water-phase, oil-in-water vaccine were prepared from whole cultures of Tritrichomonas foetus. Two inoculations were given, spaced 6 weeks apart, to virgin heifers and infected bulls. A significant reduction (P less than 0.01) in the duration of infection in vaccinated heifers was seen when they were challenged by being bred to a bull infected with the same isolate as that contained in the vaccine. Only 1/12 vaccinated heifers were pregnant 4.5 months after the end of the breeding season compared to 2/12 in the control group. The vaccine, therefore, has no practical advantage. Vaccine was supplied to 2,724 bulls on properties where the infection was present. From these bulls, 110 reliable results were obtained, where bulls had been infected, been inoculated and tested 1 month later. No curative effect was demonstrable with 69/110 (62.7%) bulls, remaining infected after the course of inoculations. There was also no difference between vaccine batches or between bulls of different ages. Further work on improving the vaccine is indicated. Three media suitable for the culture of T. foetus are described in detail.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of a modified-live virus (MLV) combination vaccine containing type 1 and type 2 bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) in providing fetal protection against challenge with heterologous type 1 and type 2 BVDV. DESIGN: Prospective study. ANIMALS: 55 heifers. PROCEDURE: Heifers were vaccinated with a commercial MLV combination vaccine or given a sham vaccine (sterile water) and bred 47 to 53 days later. Heifers were challenged with type 1 or type 2 BVDV on days 75 to 79 of gestation. Clinical signs of BVDV infection, presence of viremia, and WBC count were assessed for 14 days after challenge. Fetuses were collected on days 152 to 156 of gestation, and virus isolation was attempted from fetal tissues. RESULTS: Type 1 BVDV was not isolated in any fetuses from vaccinated heifers and was isolated in all fetuses from nonvaccinated heifers challenged with type 1 BVDV. Type 2 BVDV was isolated in 1 fetus from a vaccinated heifer and all fetuses from nonvaccinated heifers challenged with type 2 BVDV. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: A commercial MLV combination vaccine containing type 1 and type 2 BVDV given to the dam prior to breeding protected 100% of fetuses against type 1 BVDV infection and 95% of fetuses against type 2 BVDV infection. Use of a bivalent MLV vaccine in combination with a comprehensive BVDV control program should result in decreased incidence of persistent infection in calves and therefore minimize the risk of BVDV infection in the herd.  相似文献

Objective-To determine whether administration of 2 doses of a multivalent, modified-live virus vaccine prior to breeding of heifers would provide protection against abortion and fetal infection following exposure of pregnant heifers to cattle persistently infected (PI) with bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) and cattle with acute bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV1) infection. Design-Randomized controlled clinical trial. Animals-33 crossbred beef heifers, 3 steers, 6 bulls, and 25 calves. Procedures-20 of 22 vaccinated and 10 of 11 unvaccinated heifers became pregnant and were commingled with 3 steers PI with BVDV type 1a, 1b, or 2 for 56 days beginning 102 days after the second vaccination (administered 30 days after the first vaccination). Eighty days following removal of BVDV-PI steers, heifers were commingled with 3 bulls with acute BHV1 infection for 14 days. Results-After BVDV exposure, 1 fetus (not evaluated) was aborted by a vaccinated heifer; BVDV was detected in 0 of 19 calves from vaccinated heifers and in all 4 fetuses (aborted after BHV1 exposure) and 6 calves from unvaccinated heifers. Bovine herpesvirus 1 was not detected in any fetus or calf and associated fetal membranes in either treatment group. Vaccinated heifers had longer gestation periods and calves with greater birth weights, weaning weights, average daily gains, and market value at weaning, compared with those for calves born to unvaccinated heifers. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance-Prebreeding administration of a modified-live virus vaccine to heifers resulted in fewer abortions and BVDV-PI offspring and improved growth and increased market value of weaned calves.  相似文献

PASSIVE TRANSMISSION OF CAMPYLOBACTER FETUS BY IMMUNISED BULLS   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Two groups of 24 heifers were mated with 3 immunised and 3 susceptible bulls respectively. Six heifers in each group were infected artificially with Campylobacter fetus sub-sp. fetus biotype venerealis. Among susceptible heifers mated with immunised bulls, 13/18 became pregnant and 5/18 yielded evidence of infection with C. fetus. Among susceptible heifers mated with susceptible bulls, 7/18 became pregnant and 10/18 yielded evidence of infection. C. fetus was isolated on one occasion from an immunised bull, but the immunised bulls failed to develop carrier status and one was shown to be refractory to artificial challenge. Susceptible bulls developed carrier status during the breeding period. It is suggested that passive transmission of C. fetus by immunised bulls can occur under conditions of intensive sexual activity.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a monovalent Leptospira borgpetersenii serovar hardjo (type hardjobovis) vaccine commercially available in Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, and the United Kingdom would protect cattle from renal colonization and urinary shedding when exposed to a US strain of Leptospira borgpetersenii serovar hardjo. ANIMALS: 24 Hereford heifers that lacked detectable antibodies against serovar hardjo. PROCEDURE: Heifers received 2 doses, 4 weeks apart, of the commercial hardjo vaccine (n = 8) or a monovalent US reference hardjo vaccine (8) or were not vaccinated (controls; 8). Heifers were challenged 16 weeks later by intraperitoneal inoculation or conjunctival instillation. Serum antibody titers were measured weekly, and urine samples were examined for leptospires. Heifers were euthanatized 11 to 14 weeks after challenge, and kidney tissue was examined for evidence of colonization. RESULTS: All 8 heifers vaccinated with the reference vaccine were found to be shedding leptospires in their urine and had evidence of renal colonization. All 4 control heifers challenged by conjunctival instillation and 2 of 4 control heifers challenged by intraperitoneal inoculation shed leptospires in their urine, and all 8 had evidence of renal colonization. In contrast, leptospires were not detected in the urine or tissues of any of the 8 heifers that received the commercial hardjo vaccine. Heifers that received the commercial hardjo vaccine had significantly higher antibody titers than did heifers that received the reference vaccine. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggest that cattle that received 2 doses of the commercial hardjo vaccine were protected against renal colonization and urinary shedding when challenged with L borgpetersenii serovar hardjo strain 203 four months after vaccination.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of in ovo administered reovirus vaccines on the immune responses of specific-pathogen-free chickens. T-cell mitogenic responses to concanavalin A were numerically lower at 9 and 12 days of age and significantly lower at 6 days of age in birds vaccinated with a commercial reovirus vaccine compared with unvaccinated birds or birds vaccinated with an experimental reovirus-antibody complex vaccine. There were no significant differences in proportions of subpopulations of helper (CD4+CD8-) or cytotoxic (CD4-CD8+) T cells except at 12 days of age, when the percentages of CD4-CD8+ cells in the two vaccinated groups were statistically higher than in the nonvaccinated group. B-cell populations were not different among vaccine groups except at 9 days of age, when the vaccinated groups had the highest level of B cells. This commercial reovirus vaccine should not be given in ovo to embryos having little or no maternal antibody, otherwise immunosuppression may occur in the chicks. The addition of the antibody complex to the vaccine prevented this T-cell immunosuppression.  相似文献

To test the efficacy of a polyvalent Tritrichomonas foetus vaccine, 130 nulliparous heifers were randomly assigned to either receive the test T foetus vaccine or to serve as nonvaccinated controls. The polyvalent test vaccine consisted of a Campylobacter fetus/Leptospira canicola-grippotyphosa-hardjo-icterohaemorrhagiae-pamona bacterine containing 5 x 10(7) killed T foetus/dose. The polyvalent control vaccine consisted of the aforementioned formulation without T foetus. Heifers were administered 2 doses of control or experimental vaccine at 3-week intervals. Heifers were bred to T foetus-infected bulls and their conception and pregnancy rates were determined throughout gestation. In addition, serum samples were analyzed to determine induced concentrations of antitrichomonal antibodies and vaginal secretions were sampled to determine T foetus infection rates in control and vaccinated animals. One week after each of the 15-day breeding periods, 60% (6 of 10) of tested vaccinates and 80% (8 of 10) of tested control animals were T foetus culture-positive. The mean duration of infection of vaccinates was 3.8 weeks (+/- 7.5 days), compared with 5.4 weeks (+/- 7.5 days) of infection for control heifers. All vaccinates developed increased immunofluorescence and serum neutralizing antibody titers following the first immunization, and had additional increases of at least fourfold in response to the second injection. In contrast, no consistent increase in immunofluorescence or serum neutralizing antibodies was observed in control animals. Conception rates were 89.2% for vaccinates and 85.9% for control animals 30 days after breeding and 80 to 90% of these remained pregnant 60 days after breeding.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

An adjuvant vaccine was prepared from an Australian isolate of Campy-lobacter fetus subsp fetus biotype intermedius and injected into 23 virgin Guernsey heifers. Ten nonvaccinated animals served as controls. When challenged by the intravaginal route with a culture of either the homologous strain or biotype venerealis, weekly swabs from the anterior vagina continued to yield either biotype in 8 of 10 nonvaccinates at 6 weeks as compared with 3 of 23 vaccinates. Serology in vaccinated heifers and rabbits showed that the vaccine produced high titres of antibody against both homologous and heterologous strains.  相似文献

Bovine neosporosis is an important disease in dairy herds in Argentina. Embryo transfer (ET) technology offers the opportunity to minimize vertical transmission of neosporosis. The objective of this work was to compare the serological status and the incidence of abortion between heifers obtained via natural service and heifers obtained by ET from Neospora‐infected cows. Progeny from eight Neospora‐infected cows belonging to a commercial dairy farm where ET was routinely performed were studied. Between 1996 and 2001, 16 and 15 heifers were obtained by natural service and ET, respectively. Serostatus and reproductive performance were recorded in both progeny. Serostatus was determined by indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT). All heifers obtained by natural service were seropositive and six of 16 pregnancies ended in abortion. All heifers obtained by ET were seronegative and only two abortions of 15 pregnancies were recorded.  相似文献

The protective efficacy of two inactivated commercial (A, B) and two new inactivated vaccines (M7, QS) against ovine enzootic abortion was determined in two separate experiments in sheep. Vaccine A contained chlamydiae propagated in chicken embryos, adjuvated with Marcol 82, and vaccine B contained chlamydiae cultured in cell monolayers, adjuvated with aluminium hydroxide. For the preparation of the experimental vaccines, Chlamydophila abortus AB7 strain was cultured in McCoy cells and adjuvated with QS-21 (QS) or Montanide ISA 773 (M7). The ewes were vaccinated twice subcutaneously and challenged at 90 days of gestation. Protection was evaluated by clinical, bacteriological and serological examinations, and compared to two control groups: one of infected but not vaccinated ewes, and another of vaccinated but not infected ewes. The experimental vaccines induced considerably better protection than the two commercial ones. The new vaccine M7 especially showed no abortions, a good antibody response, the highest newborn lamb weights and the lowest level of C. abortus shedding at lambing.  相似文献

Fetal infection with bovine virus diarrhea virus (BVDV) causes severe economic loss and virus spread in cattle. This study investigated the ability of modified live BVDV I and II components of a commercially available modified live virus (MLV) vaccine (Breed-Back FP 10, Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica Inc.) to prevent fetal infection and abortion, and therefore the birth of persistently infected animals. Heifers immunized with vaccine 4-8 weeks before insemination showed no adverse effects. All vaccinated animals had seroconverted to BVDV 4 weeks after immunization. Pregnant heifers were divided into two vaccination and two control groups and challenged with type I or II BVDV on days 60-90 of gestation. Seroconversion, clinical signs, immunosuppression, viremia, mortality, abortion rate, and fetal infection were studied. Post-challenge, 6/11 (type I challenged) and 8/11 (type II challenged) vaccinated heifers were free from clinical signs of BVD. Post-challenge clinical signs noted in the vaccinated groups were mild to moderate, while all unvaccinated controls had clinical signs ranging from moderate to severe. Viremia was not detected post-challenge in any of the vaccinated heifers. However, 100% of the controls were BVDV viremic on at least 1 day post-challenge. One of 22 vaccinated heifers had transient leukopenia, whereas 2/8 and 6/7 unvaccinated heifers in control groups I and II, respectively, had transient leukopenia. Type II BVDV infection led to abortion or death in 86% of unvaccinated heifers. The corresponding vaccinated group showed no deaths or abortions. All control group fetuses were infected with BVDV. The test vaccine gave 91% (type I BVDV challenged) and 100% (type II BVDV challenged) protection from fetal infection. This vaccine is safe and effective against fetal infection, abortion (type II BVDV) and the birth of persistently infected animals.  相似文献

This study demonstrated that the modified-live bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) type 1 and 2 fractions of a multivalent vaccine protected pregnant heifers and their fetuses against virulent BVDV types 1 and 2 challenge exposures at 370 days after vaccination. All BVDV vaccinated heifers inoculated with either BVDV type 1 or 2 at approximately 62 to 94 days of gestation delivered fetuses or calves that were negative for BVDV by ear-notch immunohistochemistry and virus isolation and serum neutralization on a prenursing serum sample. In comparison, eight of nine and 10 of 10 fetuses or calves from non-BVDV-vaccinated heifers were considered persistently infected following exposure to BVDV type 1 and type 2, respectively.  相似文献

SUMMARY Three groups, each of 14 mature Jersey heifers, were vaccinated. They were mated about 2 months later and those that became pregnant were challenged at about 6.5 months of pregnancy by the conjunctival application of virulent Brucella abortus. Group 1 heifers received 2 doses of B. abortus 45/20 vaccine 2 months apart. Only 5 of the 14 heifers became pregnant, and of these 5 only one resisted challenge. Group 2 heifers received only one dose of 45/20 vaccine, 5 of the 10 challenged resisted infection. Group 3 heifers received 3 × 108 cfu of strain 19. Six of the 10 heifers challenged resisted infection. All of 5 non-vaccinated control cattle became infected. It appeared advantageous to give only one dose of 45/20 rather than 2 as presently recommended. A single dose of 45/20 vaccine induced resistance to virulent B. abortus approximately equal to that given by the reduced dose of strain 19. One dose of 45/20 vaccine stimulated transient serological positivity in 2 of 28 heifers whereas the reduced dose of strain 19 gave rise to persistent titres in 2 of 14 vaccinated heifers.  相似文献
