Summary The relationship between the twospotted spider mite and cucumber has been studied on plants and on leaf disks of a number of varieties with different levels of resistance. Existing laboratory tests are critically discussed and it appears that they are only reliable if many factors are taken into account. A new, more efficient laboratory test for resistance, measuring acceptance and reproduction is described.

Summary The bitter cucumber variety Improved Long Green did not differ in resistance to the twospotted spider mite from its near isogenic non-bitter mutant, the source of all non-bitter varieties. Four pairs of near isogenic bitter and non-bitter varieties gave similar results. Therefore any causal relation between bitterness and resistance is denied.

Summary The current powdery mildew (Sphaerotheca fuligninea) resistant cucumber varieties suffer from leaf chlorosis during autumn, winter and early spring cultivation in the Netherlands. Therefore screening was carried out for novel powdery mildew resistance genes. From 177 accessions, derived from different sources, 108 accessions proved to be partially resistant to S. fuliginea. Crosses were made with 53 resistant accessions to distinguish the presence of novel genes. It is likely that the accessions C. sativus 2145, C. sativus LV 41, PI 188807, Vladivostokij, White and Yellow 1 have one or more recessive powdery mildew resistance genes, different from powdery mildew resistance genes of the line NPI, which was used for variety breeding. Powdery mildew resistance tests with S. fuliginea give similar results in different regions of the world.Abbreviations pmr powdery mildew resistance  相似文献

Summary After a first screening of 800 cucumber varieties, a laboratory test and a practical test, the following nine varieties have been selected for their distinguishable level of resistance to the twospotted spider mite: PI 220860, Hybrid Long Green Pickle, PI 178885, Ohio MR 200, Taipei no 1, Robin 50, Aodai, PI 163222 and PI 218036. Besides resistance tolerance for the twospotted spider mite also appears to occur. Related Cucumis species do not seem to possess higher levels of resistance than the most resistant C. sativus varieties. The resistance-parameters acceptance and reproduction appear to be positively correlated. On resistant varieties the metabolism of the spider mites is clearly disturbed, but this seems not to be caused mainly by bitter principles.

summary After crossing partially resistant varieties some lines with a markedly higher resistance level were selected. This transgression for resistance indicates a polygenic inheritance of the resistance. On the most resistant F5 lines selected, oviposition was reduced by 50 to 60% and the economic damage threshold was reached 5 to 8 weeks later than in the susceptible control. The level of acceptance was not influenced by the selection. The selection of individual F2 plants was hampered by low heritabilities, whereas the heritabilities of F3- and subsequent line means were generally high enough. Selection for higher resistance levels was attended by an unintended increase in cucurbitacin content. This is explained by linkage of genes for resistance and bitterness rather than by identity of these genes.

Summary The inheritance of resistance to the twospotted spider mite and of bitterness in cucumber has been studied in three sets of P1, P2, F1, F2, B11 and B12 of crosses between three bitter, resistant lines and one non-bitter, susceptible line. Resistance to the twospotted spider mite as measured by acceptance and oviposition appeared to be determined by several to many genes, which are inherited mainly in an additive fashion. Bitterness is basically governed by the gene Bi, which, contrary to earlier reports, is inherited in an intermediary way, while the expression of Bi is influenced by additively inherited intensifier genes. Whereas Bi and the bitterness intensifier genes are not related to the resistance factors acceptance and oviposition, they are related to resistance or tolerance as measured by the damage index. This relation is explained by linkage rather than by identity of the genes concerned. Changes in the test methods and breeding consequences are discussed.

[Objective] Based on the representative 236 cotton varieties in Xinjiang, the resistance of cotton to mites was identified, and the waxy content and waxy components of leaves were analyzed to lay a foundation for cotton breeding. [Method] In the cotton seedling stage, the waxy content of the leaves of different cotton varieties was determined, and the waxy components of the leaves were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. [Result] Most cotton varieties are sensitive to the damage of cotton mites. There were 2 high resistance varieties, 3 resistant materials, 22 medium resistant materials, 207 sensitive materials and 2 high-sensitivity materials in 236 cotton materials. The waxy content on the surface of cotton leaves was significantly negatively correlated with leaf damage levels. The waxy components of cotton leaves were mainly alkane compounds, containing a small amount of esters, ethers and fatty acids. The content of alkanes and esters in waxy leaves of high-resistance cotton germplasm materials was higher than that of high-sensitivity materials. The compound with the largest difference in content are C24H50, C35H72 and C17H36. [Conclusion] These results lay a foundation for further study on the effects of waxy content on host selection and mite resistance of cotton mites.

Gummy stem blight resistance of cucumbers (Cucumis sativus L.)
Summary A start was made with breeding for resistance to gummy stem blight in cucumber. A method has been development for screening plants in a young stage. Using this method a distinct level of resistance was found in plants of Leningradsky, Wjarnikovsky,a P.I. entry from Birma, Rheinische Vorgebirge and a P.I.entry from Turkey. Lines developed from this material show a higher level of resistance than Dutch slicing and pickling cucumber varieties.

Summary Crosses were made between wheat varieties Joss Cambier, Nord Desprez and Maris Bilbo, all classified as susceptible to yellow rust in field tests, and between Cappelle Desprez and Maris Huntsman, both classified as moderately and durably resistant. Selection for resistance to yellow rust among the progeny was carried out using races of Puccinia striiformis able to overcome all the known race-specific components of resistance in both parents of each cross. Lines with greater resistance than in both parents were obtained from each cross, those with greatest resistance being obtained from the cross between the moderately resistant parents. Three lines selected for resistance from the cross of Joss Cambier with Nord Desprez and one from the cross of Cappelle Desprez with Maris Huntsman, together with the parents, were tested in the field with 12 races of P. striiformis. Nord Desprez possessed a previously undetected race-specific component. The selected lines also displayed race-specific resistance, some of which was clearly related to race-specificity of the parents, and a component of resistance, greater than in both parents, that was effective against all 12 races. The possible origin and potential durability of this transgressive level of resistance is discussed. It is suggested that such transgressive resistance is more likely to be durable if it is derived from parents that have shown durable resistance.

Summary Three sugarbeet breeding lines partially resistant to the root-rotting fungus, Rhizoctonia solani, were converted to the tetraploid condition without selection. These three diploid and tetraploid lines were crossed with three diploid male-sterile lines to produce equivalent diploid and triploid hybrids. The triploid hybrids were significantly more resistant to Rhizoctonia than were the diploid hybrids. However, the tetraploid resistant limes were no different than their diploid equivalent lines. Reciprocal crosses provided no evidence of maternal effect on resistance. Cytoplasm that included the male-sterility factor had no influence on resistance. Triploid hybrids, where the resistant parent is tetraploid, should be advantageous in the breeding of rhizoctonia-resistant hybrid varieties.Joint contribution of the Agricultural Research Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Colorado State University Experiment Station, and the Beet Sugar Development Foundation. The genetics of resistance to Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) in Cucumis sativus var. hardwickii R. Alef, the wild progenitor of cultivated cucumber was assessed by challenge inoculation and by natural infection of CMV. Among the 31 genotypes of C. sativus var. hardwickii collected from 21 locations in India the lowest mean percent disease intensity (PDI) was recorded in IC-277048 (6.33%) while the highest PDI was observed in IC-331631 (75.33%). All the four cultivated varieties (DC-1, DC-2, CHC-1 and CHC-2) showed very high PDI and susceptible disease reaction. Based on mean PDI, 8 genotypes were categorized as resistant, 13 as moderately resistant, 9 as moderately susceptible and one as susceptible. A chi-square test of frequency distribution based on mean PDI in F2 progenies of six resistant × susceptible crosses revealed monogenic recessive Mendelian ratio 1(R):3(S) to be the best fit. This monogenic recessive model was further confirmed by 1(R):1(S) ratio as the best fit for back cross with resistant parent and no fit for either 3:1 or 1:1 in the back cross with the susceptible parent. The results revealed that CMV resistance in C. sativus var. hardwickii was controlled by a single recessive gene. Considering the cross compatibility between C. sativus var. hardwickii and cultivated cucumber, the resistance trait can be easily transferred to cultivated species through simple backcross breeding.

Among the main causes of poor yield in common beans are fungal, viral and bacterial diseases. Common bacterial blight, caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. phaseoli (Xap), is one of the major bacterial diseases leading to significant losses in Brazil. Chemical control is ineffective, therefore, the use of resistant varieties becomes an interesting alternative. The objective of the present work was to evaluate disease resistance under natural infection of the pathogen in 109 recombinant inbred lines (F7) of P. vulgaris originated from the cross HAB-52 (susceptible — snapbean) × BAC-6 (resistant — common bean) in two different environments, as well as to calculate genetic parameters to assist in the selection of promising materials to be used in the CBB resistance breeding program. The data of the genetic parameters were compared to those calculated for the F3 generation originated from the same cross. The heritability results for DI (disease index) and VI (variation index) in F3 were 26.85% and 0.26, respectively, whereas in F7 they were 91.77% and 1.36, respectively. These results demonstrate a potential to be explored for this advanced population, that in the future, along with other pathogen variability studies and tests in other environments, may provide more information regarding a more precise evaluation of promising genotypes to be used in common bean breeding programs aiming to obtain CBB resistant varieties. The aim of this study was to delta differences in resistance to the carmine spider mite, Tetranychus cinnabarinus between cotton varieties grown in different areas. The effects of 8 varieties from several countries cm the development, longevity and fecundity of T-cinnabarinus were investigated in the laboratory. On leaves of the Egyptian cotton, Gossypium vitifolium, variety Giza 75, both females and males required a longer period to complete development than on the G. hirsutum varieties Coker 310 and MCH H. Female mites reared on the variety Coker 310 lived significantly longer and had the longest oviposition period. The largest total progeny per female was observed on the varieties Coker 310 and MCH H, the smallest on the varieties Aleppo 1 and Giza 75. The cotton varieties had no effect on the sex ratio of T. cinnabarinus. In general, the G. hirsutum varieties Coker 310 and MCH 11 appeared to be most supportive for T. cinnabarinus, whereas the G. vitifolium variety Giza 75 clearly showed reduced susceptibility.

Summary The genetics of partial resistance of lettuce to Myzus persicae was studied using F1 and F2 generations of two crosses between a susceptible and partially resistant accession (Norden x Batacer and Liba x Norden) and three crosses in which both parents were partially resistant (Batavia la Brillante x Batacer, Batacer x Liba and CGN4741 x Batacer). Partial resistance to M. persicae inherited quantitatively, without important dominance effects. Only in the cross Batacer x Liba were significant departures of the F1 and F2 from the midparent found, which were probably caused by epistatic effects. Reciprocal F1s had similar resistance levels, indicating the absence of cytoplasmic or other maternal effects. Estimates of broad-sense heritability ranged from 0.34 to 0.61. The results indicated that lines with an improved resistance level can be obtained from crosses between partially resistant accessions, preferably by line selection or the application of indirect marker aided selection.Abbreviations PR partial resistance, partially resistant - S susceptibility, susceptible  相似文献

Summary Leaflets from 11 L. esculentum x L. hirsutum F2 individuals were bioassayed with spider mites (Tetranychus urticae). Densities of Type I, Type III, Type IV, Type V, and Type VI trichomes and the intensity of red fluorescence of the Type VI trichome tip varied widely among the 11 F2 hybrids. Mite responses were analyzed in relation to these trichome characters and leaflet surface. Variation in Type IV density accounted for most of the variation in mite responses. Densities of Type I, V and VI trichomes also contributed to mite responses but their effects were obscured by high Type IV densities. Type VI tip fluorescence was not associated with responses of mites in bioassays of these hybrids. The investigation reported in the paper (84-10-123) is in connection with a project of the Kentucky Agricultural Experiment Station and is published with the approval of the Director. Summary The inheritance of resistance to coffee berry disease (CBD) has been studied by applying a preselection test to F2 progenies of a half diallel cross between 11 coffee varieties with different degrees of resistance and to sets of parental, F1, F2, B11 and B12 generations of crosses between resistant and susceptible varieties. True resistance to CBD appears to be controlled by major genes on three different loci. The highly resistant variety Rume Sudan carries the dominant R- and the recessive K-genes. The non-allelic interaction between these two genes is of a duplicate nature. The R-locus has multiple alleles with R 1R1alleles present in Rume Sudan and the somewhat less effective R 2R2alleles in a variety like Pretoria, which also has the K-gene. The moderately resistant variety K7 carries only the recessive K-gene. The arabica-like variety Hibrido de Timor (a natural interspecific arabica x robusta hybrid) carries one gene for CBD resistance on the T-locus with intermediate gene action. It probably inherited this gene from its robusta parent. There is circumstantial evidence that the resistance to CBD is of a stable nature, but it is advisable to accumulate in one genotype as many resistance genes as possible by combining in the breeding programme the resistance of Rume Sudan with that of Hibrido de Timor.

When challenged with Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. vasinfectum (Fov) from vegetative compatibility groups (VCGs) 01111 and 01112 in glasshouse tests, Gossypium australe Mueller and Gossypium sturtianum Willis accessions showed a variety of disease responses ranging from highly resistant to highly susceptible. Under high disease pressure G. sturtianum accession Gos-5275 was significantly more resistant than the commercial G. hirsutum cultivars that are designated standards for Fusarium resistance by Australian cotton breeders. Under low disease pressure G. sturtianum accession Gos-5250 was more susceptible than a highly susceptible commercial cultivar. A series of glasshouse tests was performed at two locations (Indooroopilly, QLD. and Canberra, ACT), and under low and high disease pressure. In these tests, a hexaploid cross (Gos-5271) generated from a Fusarium-resistant G. sturtianum (Gos-5275) and a Fusarium-susceptible G. hirsutum L. (CPI-138969) was significantly more resistant to Fusarium wilt than its G. hirsutum parent. Thus G. sturtianum, with a diploid genome and a range of responses to Fov challenge, has the potential to provide the basis for the elucidation of the genetic basis of resistance to Fusarium wilt in cotton species. In addition, resistant accessions of G. sturtianum are identified as a potential source of Fusarium wilt resistance genes for cotton breeding. In the glasshouse tests used to assess the resistance of various Gossypium accessions to Fusarium wilt disease, the scoring of vascular browning was found to give a more reliable indication of disease severity than the scoring of foliar symptoms. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

Summary Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) line ICC 1069 was selected as resistant parent after screening for resistance to grey mould (Botrytis cinerea Pers.) under artificial inoculation conditions. It was crossed with four high yielding susceptible varieties of chickpea. Crosses ICC 1069 × BGM 413 and ICC 1069 × BG 256 showed monogenic dominant resistance in ratio of 3R (resistant): 1S (susceptible). However, in crosses, ICC 1069 × BGM 419 and ICC 1069 × BGM 408, a ratio of 13S (susceptible) : 3R (resistant) was obtained indicating the presence of epistatic interaction. The results pointed towards the presence of a type of major gene resistance to grey mould in chickpea.
