Growth factors are important in healing and restoration of injured gastrointestinal tissues and, therefore, we characterised temporally the distribution and density of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFr) in normal and peptic-injured gastric squamous epithelium of horses. Lesions were induced in the equine gastric squamous epithelium using a feed deprivation protocol that results in prolonged increased gastric acidity. Fifteen mature horses, 9 geldings and 6 mares, age 3 to 20 years, were used and divided into 3 groups: Group 1 (n = 5) were subjected to euthanasia for problems unrelated to the gastrointestinal tract and had normal-appearing gastric squamous mucosal epithelium; Groups 2 (n = 5) and 3 (n = 5) had lesions induced in the gastric squamous epithelium by alternating 24 h periods of feed deprivation and ad libitum access to hay, for a total of 48 h and 96 h, respectively. Following lethal injection of a barbiturate, stomachs were removed and fixed by filling with 4- 6 l 10% buffered formalin. Sections were made from normal stomachs and lesions in the gastric squamous epithelium adjacent to the margo plicatus along the right side of the stomach/greater curvature and the lesser curvature. A modified avidin-biotin immunoperoxidase technique was used to stain the formalin-fixed tissue specimens for EGFr. A computerised image analysis system was used to measure area occupied by EGFr (EGFr area) and mean EGFr density in 4 zones within the epithelium extending from the basal cell layers toward the lumen. Measurements were made of epithelium in an erosion bed, at the margin of an ulcer or erosion, and 10-15 mm distant from the lesion margin. Additionally, EGFr area and density were measured in epithelial cells adjacent to capillaries in the epithelium. Intermittent feed deprivation resulted in erosion and ulceration of the gastric squamous epithelium of each horse. Mean EGFr area and density were greatest (P<0.05) in the basal layer of epithelia from all horses, and EGFr staining diminished progressively toward the lumen. Tissues from Group 3 had significantly greater EGFr area in the lesion margin than epithelia from Group 2. EGFr density was less in the epithelia of erosion beds from Groups 2 and 3 compared to normal epithelium, and EGFr area in Group 2 erosion bed epithelia was significantly less than in normal epithelium and epithelia of Group 3. EGFr area in cells adjacent to epithelial capillaries of Group 3 was significantly greater than that of Group 1. Mitotic cell activity was significantly greater in epithelia associated with ulcers and erosions in Groups 2 and 3 compared to normal tissues from Group 1 horses. Staining for EGFr in the glandular mucosa adjacent to squamous epithelium at the margo plicatus was inconsistent and typically faint when present. EGFr distribution in equine gastric squamous epithelium was greatest in regions of greatest cell proliferation, and these areas were in the basal layers of epithelium and immediately adjacent to capillaries. There was evidence that EGFr is induced in peptic-injured equine gastric squamous epithelium. A receptor ligand, EGF or transforming growth factoralpha, may be a factor in healing of gastric squamous mucosal ulcers in horses. Further research should be directed at identifying this ligand and determining its origin in equine gastric mucosa.  相似文献

This study examined whether a product containing a pectinlecithin complex (Pronutrin) (1) could prevent gastric lesions induced in the equine gastric squamous epithelial mucosa using a protocol of intermittent feed deprivation that resulted in prolonged increased gastric acidity (Murray and Eichorn 1996). Eight ponies were used and served as their own controls in 2 trials in which there were 72 h cumulative deprivation (alternating 24 h with no feed, then 24 h free choice hay), with a 4-week interval between trials. Ponies were assigned randomly to receive either 250 g Pronutrin plus 200 g pelleted feed, or 450 g pelleted feed only. Ponies were conditioned to each treatment for 7 days and received Pronutrin and pellets or only pellets once daily during the feed deprivation protocol. Gastroscopy was performed at the beginning and conclusion of the feed deprivation protocol. The endoscopist (MJ.M.) was blinded as to treatments, and lesion severity was scored on a scale of 0-5. Gastroscopy revealed normal-appearing gastric mucosa at the beginning of feed deprivation, with the exception of 2 ponies which had focal squamous mucosal erosion and 1 pony with focal glandular mucosal erosion. After 72 h cumulative feed deprivation, each pony, except 1 pony in one of the trials, developed erosions or ulcers in the gastric squamous mucosa. There was no difference (P = 0.6) in the presence or severity of gastric lesions between treatments. Lesions did not develop in the gastric glandular mucosa as a result of the intermittent feed deprivation with either treatment. In this study, the pectin-lecithin complex in Pronutrin failed to prevent lesions in the gastric squamous mucosa induced by intermittent feed deprivation.  相似文献

Gastroduodenal ulceration is a prevalent disease in foals and adult horses. Decreased performance as well as fatal complications relate to this syndrome. The objective of our study was to determine the prevalence of gastric ulceration in a mixed population of horses by postmortem examination and to evaluate a possible association between equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS) and sex or age of the examined horses, to evaluate the localisation of lesions in the proximal part of the gastrointestinal tract and to determine the occurrence of gastric parasites. Postmortem examinations were performed on 71 horses over a period of 24 months. Gastric ulcers were found in 52 horses (73.2%). There was no significant association between age or sex and occurrence of gastric ulcers. In all horses the squamous mucosa lesions were localised near the margo plicatus (100% of the cases), whereas in 23 horses the lesions were near the margo plicatus and lesser curvature and in 7 horses at the greater curvature. In 18 horses the mucosa was affected in the whole extent of the margo plicatus and in 1 horse diffuse lesions of the squamous mucosa were noted. Lesions of the glandular mucosa were localised in 11 horses at the fundic area, in 1 horse they occurred in the pylorus, and in 10 horses diffuse lesions of the glandular mucosa were recorded. A low prevalence of Gasterophilus intestinalis infection was detected (1 horse, 1.4%). We have confirmed that gastric ulcers are a common problem in horses and duodenal or oesophageal ulceration is rare (not a single case of the latter was found in this study). Lesions in the glandular mucosa of the stomach are more frequent in suckling foals than in older animals. Lesions of the glandular mucosa are also common in adult horses, and a complete gastroscopic examination including examination of the pylorus is advisable to evaluate this syndrome.  相似文献

Phenylbutazone, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug known to produce intestinal erosions, was administered intravenously (13.46 mg/kg bodyweight) to 12 horses which were killed after 24, 48, 72 and 96 h. Eight untreated horses served as controls. Annular erosions in the duodenum and mucosal necrosis in the colon were seen after 48 h which progressed in severity. The erosions were characterised by sloughing of the surface epithelium, subepithelial cleft and bleb formation, necrosis of the lamina propria, degeneration of the walls of subsurface capillaries and microthrombosis. Large numbers of neutrophils with abundant fibrin and cellular debris were present at the erosion sites. Ultrastructurally, there was swelling of the endothelium of capillaries and small vessels, and of pericyte and smooth muscle cytoplasm in arterioles. In capillaries and post capillary venules, the endothelium ranged from swollen to lysed and necrotic. Extensive extravasation of erythrocytes and oedema were seen. These lesions were not seen in the control horses. Phenylbutazone produces a microvascular injury associated with the formation of duodenal and colonic erosions in horses. The duodenal and colonic mucosa were assayed at 48 and 96 h for prostacyclin and PGE2. There was no statistically significant difference between prostaglandin levels in the mucosa of control and treated horses. It was concluded that there was no correlation between mucosal prostaglandin levels and intestinal erosions after 48 h.  相似文献

Phenylbutazone, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug known to produce gastric ulcers, was administered intravenously (13.46 mg/kg body weight) daily to 12 horses. Horses were euthanatized daily after 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours following the initial injection. Eight untreated horses served as controls. Small multifocal pyloric erosions were seen after 24 hours and then progressed in severity over time. The erosions were characterized by sloughing of the surface epithelium, subepithelial bleb formation, necrosis of the lamina propria, degeneration of the walls of subsurface capillaries, and microthrombosis of the capillaries of the pyloric mucosa. Large numbers of neutrophils with abundant fibrin and cellular debris were present at the erosion sites. Eroded pyloric mucosa and adjacent macroscopically intact mucosa were examined ultrastructurally. In both the macroscopically eroded mucosa and multifocally in the adjacent macroscopically uneroded mucosa, there was cellular swelling of the endothelium, pericytes, and smooth muscle cells of arterioles. In capillaries and post-capillary venules, the endothelium ranged from swollen to lysed and necrotic. Extensive extravasation of erythrocytes and edema were seen. These lesions were not seen in the control horses. Phenylbutazone produces a microvascular injury that is associated with the formation of pyloric erosions in horses. The pyloric mucosa of six horses was assayed for prostacyclin and prostaglandin E2 at 48 and 96 hours following the initial injection. There was no statistically significant difference between prostaglandin concentrations in the mucosa of control and treated horses. It was concluded that there was little correlation between pyloric mucosal prostaglandin concentrations and pyloric erosions after 48 hours.  相似文献

Medical records and endoscopy images were examined for 209 horses that had gastroscopic examinations performed with a 2.5- or 3-m-long endoscope by one of the authors (MJM) during a 4-year period (1996-2000). The antrum and pylorus were viewed in 162 horses, and the duodenum was viewed in 94 horses. Of these 162 horses, the gastric squamous mucosa was seen in 157 horses and 50% or more of the glandular mucosa of the body of the stomach was seen in 156 horses. Erosions or ulcers were seen in the gastric squamous mucosa in 91 (58%) horses. Erosions or ulcers were seen in the glandular mucosa of the body of the stomach in only 8% of the horses. Lesions consisting of erosion or ulceration were seen in the antrum or pylorus in 94 (58%) horses. Lesions consisting of hyperemia and a rough or "bumpy" appearance were seen in the mucosa of the duodenum of 16 horses. An association between the presence of lesions in the squamous mucosa and the presence of lesions in the mucosa of the antrum/pylorus was examined by Fisher's exact test, and the linear association of lesion severity scores between the squamous mucosa and the mucosa of the antrum/pylorus was tested using a Monte Carlo estimate for linear-by-linear association. There was no association (P = .88) between these sites for presence of lesions or lesion severity scores. Similarly, there was no association between scores for the glandular mucosa in the gastric body and those in the antrum/pylorus. Because of the high prevalence of lesions in the antrum and pylorus of the stomachs of adult horses examined in a hospital setting, the entire stomach should be viewed during a gastroscopic examination.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of pH with or without pepsin or taurocholic acid on the bioelectric properties of gastric squamous mucosa in horses. SAMPLE POPULATION: Gastric tissues obtained from 16 adult horses that did not have evidence of gastric disease. PROCEDURE: Bioelectric properties of squamous mucosa were determined, using modified Ussing chambers. Tissues then were exposed to mucosal pepsin (1 mg/ml) or taurocholic acid (2.5 mM) under neutral (pH 74) or acidic (pH 1.7) conditions. RESULTS: Exposure of mucosal sheets to an acidic pH resulted in an immediate and sustained decrease in transmembrane potential difference and calculated tissue resistance. Pepsin or taurocholic acid did not significantly affect bioelectric variables when added to a mucosal bath solution of pH 7.4. A synergistic effect between pepsin or taurocholic acid and mucosal acidification was not detected. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Mucosal acidification with or without pepsin or taurocholic acid resulted in reduced tissue resistance. These data support the contention that squamous erosions or ulcers in horses are mediated, in part, by prolonged exposure of gastric squamous mucosa to luminal acid.  相似文献

Gastric endoscopy was performed at the end of a 50 or 80 km endurance ride. Gastric ulceration was evident in 67% of the horses with ulcers on the squamous region of the stomach found in 57% of the horses and active bleeding of the glandular mucosa in 27%. Three horses (10%) had lesions only on the glandular mucosa. Values of albumin, creatinine and glucose were higher in horses without gastric lesions. We conclude that horses from endurance competitions have a high prevalence of gastric ulceration that is similar to that observed in performance horses. However the severity of ulceration is less severe than has been reported in Thoroughbred race horses in active training. Owners should be aware of the high prevalence of gastric ulceration in horses that perform in endurance competitions. The high incidence of active bleeding from the glandular mucosa of the stomach in these horses requires further investigation.  相似文献

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: There is little information about the prevalence of gastric ulcers in Standardbred trotters and potential correlations between ulcers and various traits, e.g. age, sex, performance, temperament and feeding regimens, need further elucidation. OBJECTIVES: The prevalence of ulcers in the gastric squamous mucosa of Swedish Standardbreds was estimated and the associations between ulcer score and age, sex, performance, temperament and feeding regimens were determined. METHODS: Eighty Swedish Standardbreds in active race training, trained by 9 different trainers, underwent gastroscopy. Information on age, gender, status of training, performance over the last 4 months compared with the trainer's expectations before that period, behaviour, eating habits, feed type, bedding type, time spent outdoors per day and medical treatment during the last month was collected. Gastroscopy was performed and lesions in the squamous gastric mucosa were scored from 0 to 4 (0 = no lesions; 4 = > 5 lesions with haemorrhage, > 10 lesions with no haemorrhage, or a large area of diffuse loss of surface epithelium). RESULTS: Twenty-four (30%) of the horses had no lesions in the squamous mucosa, 22 (27.5%) had a score of 1; 21 (26.2%) score 2; 9 (11.2%) score 3; and 4 (5%) score 4. Horses that were in preparatory training and those that had raced during the last month were significantly more affected than horses that were fit for racing but had not raced during the last month, using a logistic regression model with trainer incorporated as a random effect. CONCLUSIONS: The study confirmed a high prevalence of ulcers in the gastric squamous mucosa of Standardbreds in race training. Of the studied parameters only status of training showed a significant association with gastric ulcers of the squamous mucosa. POTENTIAL RELEVANCE: Gastric ulceration is a common disease and diagnosis should be made by endoscopic examination of the gastric mucosa, since parameters such as age, gender, performance, behaviour, eating habits provide only weak clues as to which horses might be affected. Further studies are needed to determine the aetiology of the syndrome and to find ways to reduce, if possible, the frequency of gastric ulcers.  相似文献

Endoscopic evaluation of changes in gastric lesions of Thoroughbred foals   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Gastroendoscopic examinations were conducted on thirty-two 2- to 60-day-old Thoroughbred foals on 5 breeding farms. Repeat gastroendoscopic examinations were performed 35 to 135 days after the initial examination, with the age of foals ranging from 39 to 190 days. On initial endoscopic examination, lesions consisting of ulcers and/or erosions were most prevalent in the stratified squamous epithelial mucosa adjacent to the margo plicatus along the greater curvature of the stomach (15 of 32 foals), and were observed much less frequently at other sites within the stomach. In addition to ulcers and erosions, squamous epithelial desquamation at the margo plicatus was observed in 16 of 19 foals less than 30 days old and in 3 of 13 foals 30 to 60 days old, and was not seen in any foal on repeat endoscopy. At the time of repeat endoscopic examination, the frequency of ulcers and erosions at the margo plicatus was significantly (P less than 0.01) less than at initial examination (4 of 32 foals vs 15 of 32 foals). Lesions had healed in 14 of the 15 foals with lesions at the margo plicatus on the initial examination. Lesions were observed in the glandular mucosa of the fundus in 3 of 32 foals on initial examination and in 6 of 32 foals reexamined. Lesions in the glandular fundus observed on initial examination had healed in 2 of 3 foals, and of the 6 foals with glandular mucosal lesions on reexamination, 5 had developed lesions since the initial examination.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Background

This study was performed to determine the prevalence of ulcers in the gastric squamous and glandular mucosa in Polish pleasure horses.

Study design

Medical records from gastroscopic examinations of 108 pleasure horses of different breeds were reviewed. The study population consisted of two groups; group I (n = 48) with horses that expressed mild clinical signs of gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS) including poor appetite, slight weight loss or poor body condition, and group II (n = 60) with horses that had no signs of gastrointestinal problems. The age range was 4–10 years, including 5 males, 34 castrated males (geldings) and 69 mares. The prevalence, distribution and severity of gastric ulcers were recorded. Lesions involving the squamous mucosa and the glandular mucosa of the antrum and pylorus were graded and compared between groups.

Results

Significant difference was found in the presence and severity of gastric ulcers between the two groups of horses. The overall prevalence of gastric ulcers in the first group of horses (n = 48) was 59% while in the group of clinically healthy horses (n = 60) the prevalence of gastric lesion was 40% (P = 0.004). Almost 19% of horses from group I had between 6–10 lesions (EGUS score III) and nearly 19% had either >10 localized lesions or very large diffuse lesions (EGUS number score IV). The number of ulcerations in affected horses were significantly lower in group II compared to group I (P = 0.016) as 10% of horses had 6–10 lesions (EGUS number score III) and nearly 14% had either >10 localized lesions or very large diffuse lesions (EGUS number score IV). Gastroscopy revealed that nearly 32% of horses from the second group had an ulceration EGUS score ≥ II.

Discussion and conclusions

This study confirms that gastric ulcerations can be prevalent in apparently clinically normal pleasure horses and a complete gastroscopic examination including the examination of the pylorus is advisable to evaluate this syndrome.  相似文献

A 21-month-old Thoroughbred colt showed continuous diarrhea and developmental retardation for 7 months, and was thereafter subjected to euthanasia for necropsy and laboratory examinations. At necropsy, the cecal and colonic mucosae were diffusely rough and hyperemic. Histopathologically, the mucosa and submucosa were edematous and were infiltrated by numerous lymphocytes and macrophages. Meanwhile, three morphological types of Brachyspira antigen-containing spirochetes were found to be numerous in the crypts and in the mucus layer over the epithelium in the cecal and colonic lesions. They were frequently observed in intercellular gaps and in the cytoplasm of degenerative epithelial cells, and in the lamina propria, particularly in cavities around blood vessels. These invasive intestinal spirochetes might be one of pathogens inducing colitis and diarrhea in horses.  相似文献

Campylobacter colitis in ranch mink in Ontario.   总被引:3,自引:1,他引:2       下载免费PDF全文
Outbreaks of colitis, where Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli were the only pathogens isolated occurred in weanling mink (Mustella vision) on two commercial mink ranches in Ontario. Lesions were restricted to the proximal colon and were characterized by multiple 1 mm focal or 1 mm linear erosions/ulcers in the region 2 cm distal to the ileal-colonic junction. Histological changes included thickening of the colonic mucosa, inflammatory cell infiltrate in the lamina propria and submucosa, cellular debris and inflammatory exudate within cryptal lumens and multiple areas of mucosal erosion/ulceration. Four C. jejuni negative mink were challenged with 5.1 X 10(9) colony forming units of C. jejuni by oral inoculation. Three of four experimentally infected mink developed diarrhea by day 4 postinfection with lesions grossly and microscopically similar to mink in the naturally occurring outbreak. Examination of lesions by transmission electron microscope failed to show evidence of C. jejuni invasion of intestinal epithelium. Feeding uncooked slaughterhouse chicken offal was the likely source of C. jejuni in the naturally occurring outbreaks.  相似文献

Developmental changes in the mucous membrane of the rumen in bovine fetuses were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The ruminal epitheliums were obtained from 20 bovine fetuses and 4 bovine neonates. The samples were divided into 3 groups. Group 1 was examined in the epithelial surface by SEM. Group 2 was examined in the surface of the lamina propria and the reverse face of the epithelium by SEM, after having separate the epithelium from the lamina propria by Scallata's PBS-EDTA method. Group 3 was examined in histological aspect.
The ruminal papillae appeared first in early in the 5th month of gestation. On the other hand, the papillae of the lamina propria appeared first in early 4th month or late 4th month of gestation. It seemed that the formation of papillae in the lamina propria always preceded that of ruminal papillae. Meanwhile, some epithelial cells were exfoliated from the ruminal surface cells during late 4th month to early 5th month of gestation. Ruminal surface cells came to have keratohyaline granules from the 5th month of gestation onward.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether conditions representing activities that are typical in the recreational use of horses, including transport to and from show grounds, stall confinement in unfamiliar surroundings, and light exercise, are associated with increased incidence of gastric ulcers in horses. DESIGN: Randomized controlled study. ANIMALS: 20 client-owned horses. PROCEDURE: Horses had no gastric ulcers as determined by endoscopic examination on study day -1. Ten control horses were maintained on-site with no changes in management variables. Ten horses were transported via trailer for 4 hours on day 0 to another site, placed in individual stalls, fed twice daily, and exercised twice daily for 3 days. On day 4, they were transported back to the original site via trailer for 4 hours. On day 5, endoscopic examinations were performed on all horses to assess gastric mucosa status. RESULTS: Horses that were transported and housed off-site had a significantly higher incidence of hyperkeratosis and reddening of the gastric mucosa than control horses. Two control horses and 7 transported horses developed gastric ulcers by day 5. Ulcer scores of transported horses increased significantly from day -1, whereas ulcer scores in control horses did not change significantly from day -1. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Activities that are typical in recreational use of horses were ulcerogenic, and ulcers in the gastric squamous mucosa can develop under these conditions within 6 days.  相似文献

It was hypothesized that horses exhibiting crib-biting (CB) have a greater degree of gastric mucosal damage and higher serum gastrin response to concentrate feeding than non-crib-biting (NCB) horses. Eighteen mature horses, 9 CB and 9 NCB, were used to determine prevalence and severity of gastric mucosal damage and effect of concentrate feeding on circulating gastrin. Horses were maintained on pasture with free access to hay and fed a pelleted concentrate diet twice daily. Number of crib-bites and duration of cribbing bouts were recorded in a 24-hour period. Endoscopic examinations (EE) of the squamous mucosa were performed and gastric fluid sampled after 24 to 28 hour feed removal. Following EE, horses were returned to pasture for 72 hours. Blood was collected following 12-hour feed removal (0 minutes), and at 60 and 120 minutes after consuming 1 kg of concentrate. Mean number of crib bites in 24 hours was 1,558 ± 303 with CB peaking prior to and during the afternoon feeding (3:30 PM, P < .05). There were no differences in the number or severity of ulcers, prevalence of hyperkeratosis, or baseline gastric pH between CB and NCB. Serum gastrin concentration at 60 and 120 minutes was greater (P < .05) and tended to be greater (P < .06), respectively, in CB than in NCB horses following feeding of concentrate. Crib-biting behavior in horses maintained on pasture was not associated with gastric mucosal damage; however, consumption of concentrate feed resulted in greater serum gastrin concentration in CB horses.  相似文献

The anterior nasal mucosa of 21 cattle had small closely-packed polypoid nodules. These had a distribution pattern similar to that of inhaled particles. Acute inflammatory changes consisting of eosinophil infiltration, mast cell and globule leucocyte hyperplasia, and oedema were frequent in the epithelium, terminal gland ducts and adjacent lamina propria. Epithelium over nodules was metaplastic to non-keratinising stratified squamous, whilst epithelium of terminal gland ducts was metaplastic to mucus-secreting pseudostratified columnar. Focal accumulation of granulation tissue between gland ducts caused herniations of the superficial lamina propria to form the nodules.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To report the prevalence and distribution of gastric ulceration within a group of racehorses and to describe the endoscopic appearance of gastric antrum and pyloric ulceration. DESIGN: Retrospective clinical study. PROCEDURE: Medical records from gastroscopic examinations of 345 racehorses (331 Thoroughbreds and 14 Standardbreds) were reviewed. Prevalence, distribution and severity of gastric ulcers were recorded. Lesions involving the squamous mucosa and the glandular mucosa of the antrum and pylorus were graded and compared. RESULTS: Gastric ulceration was found in 86% of racehorses. The squamous mucosa around the margo plicatus was most commonly affected. The pylorus was examined in 175 horses and 47% were ulcerated. No association was found between presence of lesions of the squamous mucosa and those of the pylorus. Low correlation was found between grade and location of lesions, with the pyloric lesion score being significantly less than the squamous mucosal lesion score. CONCLUSION: Gastric ulceration was present in a large proportion of racehorses. The pylorus was also an important site of ulceration. There was no association between presence of lesion at one site and the other, although there was a low correlation between grade of lesion and location, with the pyloric ulcer grade being lower.  相似文献

Thoroughbred and Standardbred horses in race training were selected at random and examined for gastric ulcers. The mucosa of the stomach was examined by endoscopy and was scored for ulcers on a scale of 0 (no ulcers, normal mucosa) to 3 (severe ulceration with at least five deep lesions). A total of 79 horses were examined; 37 of these horses had one to four follow-up examinations, and 42 horses had only an initial gastroscopic examination. On the first examination, 33 of 79 (42%) horses had normal mucosa (ulcer score = 0), and 22 of 79 (28%) had ulcers with an ulcer score of 2 or greater. Seven horses (9%) had severe gastric ulceration (ulcer score = 3). The average ulcer score for all 79 horses on initial examination was 1.1 and 1.2 for the 37 horses with follow-up gastroscopic examination. Males (including male castrates) had slightly higher ulcer scores (1.2) than females (1.0), and 2-year-old horses had lower ulcer scores (0.7) than horses older than 3 years (1.4), but these differences did not reach statistical significance. Each of these average scores was significantly (P < .05) greater than zero. For the 37 horses with follow-up examinations, the males had higher scores (1.6) than females (0.7), and 2-year-old horses had higher ulcer scores (1.0) than 3-year-old horses (0.7) and lower ulcer scores than horses older than 3 (1.8), which were statistically significant. Follow-up examinations revealed ulcer scores ranging from 0 to 3; 23 of 37 (63%) horses had an ulcer score of 2 or greater, and 4 of 37 (12%) horses had severe ulcer disease. Average ulcer scores were significantly higher at subsequent examinations than at the initial examination. Risk of gastric ulceration increases with the length of time horses are in race training.  相似文献

Stomach tissues from 222 beagle dogs, which were used for toxicological studies, were examined histopathologically. Out of 190 dogs fed the same diet, 185 had gastric lesions, whereas all of 32 dogs fed another diet were free from them. The gastric lesions were noted as an accumulation of eosinophils, infiltration of inflammatory cells including lymphocytes, plasma cells and histiocytes in the gastric lamina propria, formation of foreign body type multinucleated giant cells, focal desquamation and papillary proliferation of mucosal epithelium. The lesions were confined to the superficial layer of the antral and pyloric mucosa, and neither desmoplasia nor clinical signs were seen. Multinucleated giant cells often contained amphophilic foreign bodies of varying appearance with inconsistent reaction for periodic acid-Schiff (PAS), but no definite causal agents were detected.  相似文献
