Blood samples from 4,427 cows in over 300 commercial dairy herds were examined as part of a health monitoring scheme. Preliminary evidence is presented indicating that marginal concentrations of serum magnesium are related to below mean levels of blood urea nitrogen in such a manner as to suggest that marginal magnesium deficiency is a possible cause of reduced voluntary feed intake in cows managed in commercial dairy farming systems. 相似文献

Pathological findings and liver and kidney analyses confirmed that cattle had died of chronic copper poisoning on a farm in the north-eastern Transvaal. This is the first known published record of chronic copper intoxication of cattle in southern Africa. An epidemiological study revealed that a source of copper was air pollution which could have arisen from a nearby copper smelting unit. Buffalo and impala in an adjacent area of the Kruger National Park were found to have significantly higher liver copper levels than animals elsewhere in the Park. Prophylactic licks, containing zinc sulphate and sulphur, seemed to be successful in protecting cattle against the effects of the copper in the contaminated grazing. 相似文献

A 6-year-old castrated mixed-breed cat was evaluated because of unilateral anterior uveitis. The cat was seronegative for antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii, coronaviruses, and feline immunodeficiency virus, and antigens for FeLV p27 and Cryptococcus neoformans. Antibodies to Bartonella spp were detected in serum and aqueous humor. The antibody coefficient (C value) for IgG antibodies to Bartonella spp in the aqueous humor was 4.42; values > 1 suggest ocular production of antibodies and supports a diagnosis of ocular infection. Topical administration of prednisolone and oral administration of prednisone failed to induce a response; however, the uveitis resolved rapidly after the cat was given doxycycline orally. Clinical or laboratory evidence of immunodeficiency in this cat was not detected. Detection of a serum IgG antibody titer to Bartonella spp and ocular production of IgG antibodies to Bartonella spp, exclusion of other causes of uveitis, and response to doxycycline suggests that the cat may have had bartonellosis resulting in uveal tract inflammation. 相似文献

Decapitation of spermatozoa was recorded in a young boar as a consequence of epididymitis and in a young dog (mastiff) and a young bull (Brown Swiss breed) as a congenital cause of the subfertility and sterility of the affected animal. Decapitation of spermatozoa as a consequence of an inflammation led to the sterility of the breeding male and affected 52 to 68% of the spermatozoa. The motility of the spermatozoa was reduced considerably (10 to 20%) and the flagella were not observed to move without the heads. In cases of congenital decapitation of spermatozoa, sperm motility in the dog and bull was reduced, but the flagella were observed to move without the heads. Decapitation affected 15 to 42% of the spermatozoa and most frequently it was accompanied by a narrowing of head base and by the presence of a protoplasmic drop, located proximally. Further developmental changes, affecting the flagella of the sperms, were observed in the dog. The mentioned morphological changes led to infertility in the dog and to a substantial reduction of fertility in the bull. After natural mating of the bull with a superovulated cow, the ten eggs obtained included four blastocysts, two were degenerated, and four were unfertilized. 相似文献

A 3-year-old spayed female Siberian Husky was presented due to acute vision loss. Examination revealed bilateral optic neuritis and lymphocytic meningoencephalitis. The serum (1:800) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF; 1:200) immunoglobulin (Ig)G titers for tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) were elevated as were the serum IgG titer for Anaplasma phagocytophilum (1:640) and serum IgM titer for Toxoplasma gondii (1:20). Intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies such as ehrlichial or anaplasmal morulae were not observed in the CSF or blood smear. The dog was treated with methylprednisone and doxycycline. The left eye regained vision; the right eye remained blind. Anti-inflammatory therapy was stopped on day 18 after diagnosis. Four days later the dog showed evidence of hyperesthesia in the cervical region. Analysis of CSF showed no abnormalities and CSF IgG titers for TBEV and A. phagocytophilum were negative. Funduscopic evidence of active papillitis was absent on day 22 in the left eye and on day 86 in the right eye. On day 243, the dog was presented again with lethargy, ataxia, disorientation and temporary head tilt. The IgG titer for TBEV was again elevated in the CSF (1:800) and in serum (1:400). After interpretation of all findings, we assume that meningoencephalitis and optic neuritis in this patient was caused by TBEV and associated immune-mediated inflammation. In endemic areas, TBEV should be considered as cause of optic neuritis in dogs. 相似文献

Sperm output and semen quality of 17 bulls sampled over 12 months showed minimal output in mid-winter and late summer and minimum quality in late summer. Monthly measurements of luteinising hormone and testosterone concentration in plasma and testosterone concentration in semen were made over 12 months. Serum non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), albumin and total protein were also measured for the final seven months of this period. Plasma testosterone showed a strong negative correlation with sperm numbers two months hence but not in the current month. Plasma testosterone by bull and semen testosterone by month was also correlated with sperm output. Plasma luteinising hormone three months and serum total protein two months prior was positively correlated with sperm numbers ejaculated and the normality of sperm morphology, possibly by affecting the luteinising hormone dependent A0 to A1 spermatogonial division. NEFA was correlated with initial and post freezing/thawing motility in the current month, possibly by affecting membrane stability. The value of examining the bull in diagnosing infertility of cows where nutritional stress may have occurred is suggested, as is the use of albumin/total protein and NEFA measurements as a prognostic aid for time to return to normality of function of such bulls. 相似文献

Postweaning wasting is a major worldwide problem in pig production, particularly with respect to the disease termed postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS). In addition to wasting, PMWS symptoms include respiratory distress, diarrhoea, pallor and occasional cases of jaundice. The causative agent is porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV-2). The objective of the present study was to determine the significance of PMWS and similar conditions in Switzerland. A total of 72 weaned piglets from 26 farms showing wasting were examined for the presence of PCV-2 by immunohistochemical and histological analysis and 57 piglets from 21 farms were examined serologically. Possible causes for wasting other than PCV-2 were investigated by macroscopic, histological and bacteriological methods. PCV-2 antigen was identified immunohistochemically in the lymphatic organs in 11 of these 72 piglets. However, only 4 animals showed histological changes typical of PMWS. PCV-2 antibodies were found in 70% of the piglets. Piglets with wasting syndrome not associated with PCV-2 infection suffered from conditions including porcine proliferative enteropathy, gastric ulcers, polyserositis and polyarthritis. The most frequent condition was chronic enteritis not associated to circovirus infection. The results from the serological analyses indicate a wide distribution of PCV-2 in the Swiss pig population. The search for antigens capable of causing immune-complex-mediated glomerulonephritis continues. Modified live-virus vaccines commercially available for veterinary use are a possible source. In this study, repeated vaccination of mink with live-virus vaccines was investigated as a model for vaccine-induced glomerular injury. Three groups of 10-wk-old mink, 15 per group, were vaccinated once with 4-way vaccine against distemper, Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection, botulism and mink viral enteritis. Subsequently, all mink in each group each were vaccinated either with the 4-way vaccine, a monovalent canine distemper vaccine, or saline. Glomerular function was assessed at 2-wk intervals by determining the urinary protein:creatinine (P:C) ratio. Kidney sections taken at necropsy, 20 wk after the 1st vaccination, were examined by light and immunofluorescent microscopy for deposition of immunoglobulin and complement. There was no statistically significant difference between the treated and control groups based on average urinary P:C ratio medians. Light microscopic changes were detected in glomeruli, but Fisher's exact test showed no significant differences between any of the treatment groups. Deposition of immunoglobulin but not complement was significantly more frequent (P < 0.05) in the glomeruli of animals that received multiple injections of the 4-way vaccine than in the glomeruli of those given only the monovalent canine distemper vaccine or saline. These findings suggest that repeated vaccination may increase the glomerular deposition of immunoglobulin. Further studies are required to determine if the increased deposition of immunoglobulin contributes to the development of glomerular damage and to identify the antigens driving production of the deposited immunoglobulin. 相似文献

A 2-year old, neutered, female spaniel mixed breed was referred to the North Carolina State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital for evaluation of bilateral anterior uveitis. The dog was febrile and, in addition to anterior uveitis, multifocal hyporeflective lesions were present in the tapetal fundus of both eyes. The antibody titer for Bartonella vinsonii subspecies berkhoffi was positive (1 : 512). Aqueous paracentesis was performed for PCR in an attempt to detect B. vinsonii in the eye but was unsuccessful. The ocular manifestations of Bartonella infection in humans are currently expanding as more sensitive serologic and PCR techniques are being developed to identify Bartonella spp. In addition to optic neuritis and neuroretinitis, retinochoroidal lesions are one of the most common manifestations of B. henselae infection, and are frequently accompanied by vitreous or anterior segment inflammation. Diagnosis of a Bartonella infection in humans can be made on serology alone, in conjunction with ocular examination findings. The ultimate proof of B. vinsonii (berkhoffi) as a direct cause of ocular disease would be detection of the infectious agent in the eye. However, it is unknown at this time whether Bartonella causes ocular disease primarily, secondarily via an autoimmune reaction, or both. Due to the difficulties associated with culture of Bartonella spp. and the limitations of PCR, serology is currently the most useful tool for screening dogs for possible Bartonella spp. infection. In the case presented here, even though the PCR was negative, the clinical signs of anterior uveitis and choroiditis might reasonably be associated with B. vinsonii (berkhoffi) seroreactivity, which was repeatable on three separate occasions. Clinical improvement was also accompanied by a post-treatment decrease in B. vinsonii (berkhoffi) seroreactivity, potentially supporting resolution of Bartonella infection in this dog. This is the first reported case of a possible association between uveitis, choroiditis and Bartonella infection in the dog, without clinical manifestations of other organ or tissue involvement. Future studies based on PCR analysis of intraocular fluids may clarify the involvement of B. vinsonii (berkhoffi) in dogs with intraocular inflammatory disease. Furthermore, performing fluorescein angiography in dogs with elevated Bartonella titers may also prove useful in the identification and characterization of lesions. 相似文献

An outbreak of the pruritis, pyrexia, haemorrhagic syndrome affected eight of a herd of 175 cows which was divided into two groups of 115 and 60 according to yield. There was no difference in management between them but citrus pulp pellets were fed only to the larger group in which the eight cows were affected. Silage, which had been made without the use of additives, was also fed to both groups. The citrus pulp was visibly mouldy and contained 30 to 40 parts per billion of citrinin. Signs of the syndrome occurred within three days of the cows starting to ingest the citrus pulp, which was fed for 21 days, and the last case occurred six days after the feeding of citrus pulp ceased. Five calves whose dams had been fed citrus pulp were subsequently born with superior prognathism. In contrast to the eight cows that developed the syndrome only one out of 68 heifers which were fed larger quantities of citrus pulp for 10 days developed mild signs of the syndrome and then recovered, suggesting that older animals may be more susceptible. The clinical signs, gross pathology and histopathology are described and compared with those of previous outbreaks. Mycotoxins, particularly citrinin, were strongly implicated as the cause of this outbreak. 相似文献

1. A relatively new instrument known as a Sperm Quality Analyzer (SQA) offers a rapid assessment of sperm quality and quantity by providing a sperm quality index (SQI). The SQA measures the intensity of sperm activity and motile concentration by determining the number and amplitude of sperm movements per second in a capillary tube as detected through light beam interference. 2. The objectives of the current study were to determine if the SQA could accurately reflect changes in semen quality that occur with prolonged storage of semen and to determine the variation and change in SQI values among individual breeding male turkeys during their semen production cycle. 3. The effect of storage time on SQI values was evaluated by diluting semen with extender and placing the semen on an oscillating shaker at 4 degrees C for 8 h. The SQI values and sperm viability, expressed as % dead sperm, were recorded hourly. The SQI readings declined linearly with increased storage time while % dead sperm increased linearly with increased semen storage. 4. Semen from 220 individual males was analysed monthly for 9 months. Semen diluted 50-fold with saline had lower SQI values during pre- and post-peak phases of production (months 1, 7, 8, and 9 as compared with months 2 to 6 of semen production). The highest SQI values occurred during months 2 to 6. The largest variation in SQI values occurred during months 1 (CV = 26%) and 9 (CV = 31%) with a CV that averaged 16% for the remaining months. 5. Correlation analysis of SQI values for each bird averaged over 9 months with individual male SQIs for each month showed monthly correlation coefficients that ranged from 0.22 to 0.63. 6. These results indicate that the SQA accurately assessed the decline in sperm quality that occurs with prolonged storage of turkey semen and reflected age-related changes in semen quality and quantity that occurred during a semen production cycle of turkey breeders.
