Abstract. In 1991, the progeny of female Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., were sampled at emergence from sites in 16 rivers in western and northern Scotland. The progeny of farmed females that had escaped from sea-cages were identified by detecting the presence of maternal canthaxanthin in the juveniles' pigment load. Canthaxanthin was detected among fish sampled from 14 of the 16 rivers examined. Overall, 109 of the 2373 fry sampled carried canthaxanthin with an average frequency over all the rivers examined of 5·1%. This value will underestimate the real frequency of occurrence of the progeny of escaped farmed salmon: some escapees do not contain canthaxanthin and male fish do not contribute to the pigment load of their progeny.  相似文献

The substantial growth of the farmed salmon industry in Europe since the 1970s has highlighted concerns regarding the genetic impact of escaped farmed salmon on wild salmonid stocks. High incidences of salmon × trout hybrids have been recorded in rivers situated near intensive salmon farming in Norway and Scotland, which may be indicative of a breakdown in reproductive isolation between salmon, Salmo salar L., and brown trout, Salmo trutta L. In the present study, salmonid fry and 0+ parr were collected from rivers in western Ireland. Allozyme and minisatellite DNA analysis were carried out on fry to determine the frequency of F1 hybrids from 10 rivers located within 38 km of salmon farms and three rivers at least 80 km from salmon farms. A total of 49 hybrids were recorded from 4135 salmonid fry (frequency = 1.2%). Mitochondrial DNA analysis showed that all hybrids arose from Atlantic salmon female × brown trout male crosses. Hybrid parr were recorded from one of the low-risk rivers (1.0%), but were present in seven out of the 10 catchments located within 38 km of salmon farms, with frequencies ranging from 0.7% to 3.1%. The results of the present survey, which represents the first extensive record of the levels of salmon-trout hybridization in Ireland, are discussed in relation to the continued growth of salmon farming in this country.  相似文献

The characteristic pink colour of salmonid flesh is a result of deposition of naturally occurring carotenoid pigments. Achieving successful pigmentation in farmed salmonids is a vital aspect of fish farming and commercial feed production. Currently commercial diets for farmed salmonids contain either or both of the synthetic pigments commercially available, astaxanthin and canthaxanthin. Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L. ( = 220 g initial weight) were given feeds where the pigment source was astaxanthin only, canthaxanthin only or a astaxanthin/canthaxanthin mix. The rearing environment was 12 × 3 m tanks supplied with sea water at the EWOS research farm Lønningdal, near Bergen, Norway. As the proportion of dietary canthaxanthin increased, flesh pigment levels also showed an increase; the pigment content in the muscle of canthaxanthin‐only fed fish was 0.4 mg kg?1 (or 14%) higher than that of the astaxanthin‐only fed fish, with the mixed pigment fed fish being intermediate between the two extremes. Results of cross‐section assessment for Minolta colorimeter redness (a*) values and Roche SalmofanTM scores also showed an increase in colour with increasing proportions of canthaxanthin in the feed. The data reported clearly indicates that S. salar ( = 810 g final weight) of this size deposit canthaxanthin more efficiently than they do astaxanthin. These results contrast with those obtained by other authors with rainbow trout, Oncorynchus mykiss (Walbaum), and imply that the absorption or utilization of the pigments differs between species.  相似文献

Abstract  Isomeric ratios of astaxanthin in eggs and alevins of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., have proven useful in identifying female spawners of farmed origin, but the method underestimates the proportion of fish of farmed origin. The rate of underestimation was studied by analysing astaxanthin content in tissue of 55 farmed Atlantic salmon ascending two Norwegian rivers in the autumn of 1991. The astaxanthin content fell into two distinct classes. Fifty-one per cent of the adult escaped salmon had isomeric ratios similar to salmon fed synthetic astaxanthin, whereas all the remaining fish had ratios similar to wild fish. Discriminant analysis classified 96.4% of the fish with known astaxanthin content into the correct astaxanthin class on basis of tail-fin erosion, length, weight and gill-cover damage. This discriminant function was used to estimate the astaxanthin classification of 1017 farmed salmon caught in nine rivers during 1989–1991. The classification success varied among years from 52 to 64%. Corresponding numbers for females and males were 45–48% and 54–70%, respectively. Thus, estimates of spawning rates of farmed female salmon via astaxanthin content in eggs or alevins from redds should be adjusted accordingly. The observed isomeric ratios of astaxanthin in the escaped farmed salmon and the relationship with morphology indicates that a significant proportion of the escapees ascending rivers have spent more than 1 year in the wild after escape.  相似文献

Abstract. The frequency of escaped farmed salmon in the River Polla, Scotland was estimated at spawning in 1990, the second year after the escape of 184000 fish from a sea-cage site nearby. Fourteen of 73 spawners examined were of farmed origin. In only six of these fish were scale growth patterns consistent with their being part of the documented escape. All of these fish carried the pigment canthaxanthin. Fifty-nine redds were constructed at spawning. Five of 54 redds sampled contained embryos or alevins bearing canthaxanthin. The frequency of fry bearing canthaxanthin was determined in samples obtained from the neighbouring Rivers Hope and Dionard following spawning in both 1989 and 1990. There was no evidence of substantial returns of salmon from the documented escape to these rivers. These findings and those of a previous study suggest that more than 95% of those fish which returned to rivers near the site of the documented loss did so in the first year after escape and that fewer than 0·5% of those fish which escaped returned within the 2 years of study.  相似文献

Abstract. To estimate the proportion of escaped fanned Atlantic salmon. Salmo salar L., at the feeding grounds in the north-east Atlantic Ocean, samples of salmon caught with long-lines north of the Faroe Islands were examined. Identification of reared fish was carried out using scale analysis. The proportion of fanned fish was estimated to range from 25 to 48% in the different samples, suggesting that high numbers of escaped farmed salmon occur in the Norwegian Sea. The farmed fish were significantly smaller in size than the wild salmon. Although it is suggested that most of the farmed fish are of Norwegian origin, farmed fish of Scottish, Faroese and Irish origin are also believed to be present. If not accounted for, high numbers of reared salmon in fisheries and stocks will seriously affect the assessments of fisheries and stocks of wild salmon.  相似文献

This is the first comprehensive study on the occurrence and distribution of piscine reovirus (PRV) in Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., caught in Norwegian rivers. PRV is a newly discovered reovirus associated with heart and skeletal muscle inflammation (HSMI), a serious and commercially important disease affecting farmed Atlantic salmon in Norway. A cross‐sectional survey based on real‐time RT‐PCR screening of head kidney samples from wild, cultivated and escaped farmed Atlantic salmon caught from 2007 to 2009 in Norwegian rivers has been conducted. In addition, anadromous trout (sea‐trout), Salmo trutta L., caught from 2007 to 2010, and anadromous Arctic char, Salvelinus alpinus (L.), caught from 2007 to 2009, were tested. PRV was detected in Atlantic salmon from all counties included in the study and in 31 of 36 examined rivers. PRV was also detected in sea‐trout but not in anadromous Arctic char. In this study, the mean proportion of PRV positives was 13.4% in wild Atlantic salmon, 24.0% in salmon released for stock enhancement purposes and 55.2% in escaped farmed salmon. Histopathological examination of hearts from 21 PRV‐positive wild and one cultivated salmon (Ct values ranging from 17.0 to 39.8) revealed no HSMI‐related lesions. Thus, it seems that PRV is widespread in Atlantic salmon returning to Norwegian rivers, and that the virus can be present in high titres without causing lesions traditionally associated with HSMI.  相似文献

A previous study described genetic changes in a wild Atlantic salmon , Salmo salar L., population resulting from the spawning of escaped farmed salmon in the Glenarm River, Northern Ireland, in 1990. This study reports an extension of the original investigation with a further follow-up sample that was taken from the river in 1997 to assess the genetic status of the wild population two generations after the original hybridization between the wild population and the farmed strain. Overall genetic variation across eight polymorphic allozyme loci indicated that the wild population remains significantly different from the pre-escape population and from the immediate post-escape population, the presence of an allele not having been previously detected in this population ( GPI-1,2*140 ), suggesting that further incursion(s) of farmed salmon may have taken place.  相似文献

Parasitic nematodes of the family Anisakidae occur in the visceral cavity and surrounding tissues of many marine fish species at a prevalence as high as 100% in wild salmon samples. Human consumption of fish products containing these parasites can result in the zoonotic disease anisakiasis, and Anisakis simplex is most commonly associated with human disease. Previous studies of farmed salmon have found no anisakids in viscera or muscle, presumably because formulated feed production renders parasite larvae nonviable. However, among farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) examined by histopathology as part of a provincial government auditing program in British Columbia, Canada, 1 of 894 (0.11%) had an anisakid larva partly embedded in the wall of an intestinal cecum. Skeletal muscle is not examined as part of the government's program, but other studies have correlated anisakids in the viscera and muscle. Using anisakid prevalence in viscera as an estimate of its prevalence in muscle, the risk ratio of anisakid parasites in commercial product is 570 times less in farmed than in wild Atlantic salmon.  相似文献

Cardiomyopathy syndrome (CMS) is a severe cardiac disease affecting Atlantic salmon Salmo salar L. The disease was first recognized in farmed Atlantic salmon in Norway in 1985 and subsequently in farmed salmon in the Faroe Islands, Scotland and Ireland. CMS has also been described in wild Atlantic salmon in Norway. The demonstration of CMS as a transmissible disease in 2009, and the subsequent detection and initial characterization of piscine myocarditis virus (PMCV) in 2010 and 2011 were significant discoveries that gave new impetus to the CMS research. In Norway, CMS usually causes mortality in large salmon in ongrowing and broodfish farms, resulting in reduced fish welfare, significant management‐related challenges and substantial economic losses. The disease thus has a significant impact on the Atlantic salmon farming industry. There is a need to gain further basic knowledge about the virus, the disease and its epidemiology, but also applied knowledge from the industry to enable the generation and implementation of effective prevention and control measures. This review summarizes the currently available, scientific information on CMS and PMCV with special focus on epidemiology and factors influencing the development of CMS.  相似文献

Run timing of escaped farmed Atlantic salmon Salmo salar vs. wild fish was compared by the use of video camera surveillance in 15 rivers over several years, covering 1600 km of the Norwegian coastline (from 58°N to 69°N). Annual runs of wild salmon varied among rivers from <200 fish to more than 10 000. During the surveillance period that for most rivers extended from late May to early October, larger‐sized salmon (fish ≥ 65 cm) generally entered the rivers earlier than small fish. The percentage of salmon identified as escaped farmed fish ranged from 0.1% to 17% across rivers with an average of 4.3%. Estimates of escapees are, however, assumed to represent minimum values because an unknown number of farmed fish passing the video cameras may have been misclassified as wild fish. By the use of a linear mixed model and generalised additive mixed models, it was found that the relationship between run timing and fish length differed significantly between farmed and wild salmon. While small‐sized farmed and wild fish (<65 cm) entered the river at about the same time, wild large salmon returned on average 1–2 weeks earlier than similarly sized escapees. The proportion of large‐sized farmed escapees also increased until late August and decreased thereafter. In contrast, there was a relatively constant and lower proportion of small‐sized escapees throughout the season. Within the surveillance period, there was no evidence of any exceptionally late runs of fish classified as escaped farmed salmon.  相似文献

Results from an acoustic telemetry study revealed for the first time a northerly migration route for Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) smolts leaving the east coast of Ireland. Atlantic salmon smolts were tagged in spring 2019 in the Castletown and Boyne rivers. Three tagged smolts registered on disparate deep‐water offshore marine receivers as they travelled northwards out of the Irish Sea through the North Channel. One fish had migrated an estimated 250 km in a period of 32 days. The remaining two individuals were detected on receivers located off the Northern Ireland coast, further corroborating the northward migration of salmon smolts through the Irish Sea.  相似文献

In 2016, the Norwegian health monitoring programme for wild salmonids conducted a real‐time PCR‐based screening for salmon gill poxvirus (SGPV) in anadromous Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus L.), anadromous and non‐anadromous Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) and trout (Salmo trutta L.). SGPV was widely distributed in wild Atlantic salmon returning from marine migration. In addition, characteristic gill lesions, including apoptosis, were detected in this species. A low amount of SGPV DNA, as indicated by high Ct‐values, was detected in anadromous trout, but only in fish cohabiting with SGPV‐positive salmon. SGPV was not detected in trout and salmon from non‐anadromous water courses, and thus seems to be primarily linked to the marine environment. This could indicate that trout are not a natural host for the virus. SGPV was not detected in Arctic char but, due to a low sample size, these results are inconclusive. The use of freshwater from anadromous water sources may constitute a risk of introducing SGPV to aquaculture facilities. Moreover, SGPV‐infected Atlantic salmon farms will hold considerable potential for virus propagation and spillback to wild populations. The migratory behaviour of adult wild and escaped farmed Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., before, during after spawning in the River Namsen, Norway, was analysed using radio telemetry. The fish were caught, radio tagged and released into the fjord between 7 and 25 km from the river mouth. A significantly higher proportion of wild (74%) than farmed (43%) salmon was subsequently recorded in the river. Wild salmon (33%) were more frequently captured in the sea and in rivers than farmed salmon (14%). The migration speed from release to passing a data logger 11 km upstream from the river mouth was not significantly different between wild (20.6 km day?1) and farmed (19.8 km day?1) salmon. Wild salmon tagged when water flow in the river was increasing had a significantly higher migration speed than wild salmon tagged when water flow was decreasing. This was not true for farmed salmon. Farmed salmon were distributed significantly higher up the river than wild salmon during spawning, although both types of fish were found together in spawning areas. Thus, there was no geographical isolation to prevent spawning between wild and escaped farmed salmon. Farmed salmon had significantly more and longer up- and downstream movements than wild salmon during the spawning period. Unlike farmed salmon, the number of riverine movements by wild salmon increased significantly when variation in water flow increased. A smaller proportion of wild (9%) than farmed (77%) salmon survived through the winter after spawning.  相似文献

Abstract  Two sequential year classes of Atlantic salmon parr, Salmo salar L., from 13 rivers throughout Ireland, genotyped at four widely used microsatellite loci, displayed comparable levels of intra-sample genetic variability to elsewhere in the species range. Temporal allele frequency differences were observed in only one riverine sample, whereas significant spatial differences were evident in all cases, with an overall F ST value of 0.03. These spatial differences imply a high degree of natal homing. Two tributaries of a single major river system displayed variability comparable with that within the entire study, suggesting that large rivers may contain several separate tributary populations. Isolation-by-distance analysis suggests the presence of regional structure, which may have been obscured by inclusion of samples from some smaller rivers in Donegal Bay in the north west that are probably affected by incursions of cultured salmon from a nearby ranching operation. Although limited by the small number of loci screened, individual assignment analysis gave levels of self-assignment which would suggest that mixed stock analysis would be feasible as a management tool in Irish salmon fisheries, given the inclusion of larger numbers of microsatellite loci and more extensive coverage of salmon producing rivers.  相似文献

Abstract. Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., of reared origin were distinguished from putative wild fish In the catch of a single salmon fishery in western Scotland. Fish in seven day-catches made in 1990 totalling 403 individuals were assessed formally for the presence of residual fin damage resulting from culture. Fifty-eight (22%) were classed as being of reared origin, on the basis of previously established criteria. Additional examination of 54 of these fish showed the pigment canthaxanthin to be detectable in the tissues of 35 (65%), which were therefore classed as having escaped from sea cages. Among the fish in which canthaxanthin could not be detected, a further 17 individuals (31% of the total) were classed as having escaped from sea cages on the basis of scale growth patterns. Scale growth patterns in the remaining two fish (4% of the total) were consistent with their having grown in a hatchery before escape or release.  相似文献

Farmed Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, frequently escape from the aquaculture industry and interact with wild populations. The impact of these interactions on the wild populations will depend, in part, on differences in their performances. This study compared the swimming and cardiac performance of farmed salmon (Aquagen) with their founder population from the River Namsen both before and after gamete stripping. Cardiac output (CO), heart rate (HR), and stroke volume (SV), which were measured by placing Doppler flow probes around the ventral aorta of the fish, increased with exercise, but the response did not significantly differ between farmed and wild salmon. Similarly, the swimming performance of wild salmon never significantly differed from the farmed salmon. The overall similarity in swimming and cardiac performance between farmed and wild Atlantic salmon observed in the present study suggests that cultured salmon may have the ability to be competitive with the wild salmon in native waters.  相似文献

Abstract  The prevalence of escaped farmed Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., in the River Ewe, western Scotland, was assessed. After the establishment of smolt cages in the catchment and marine cages near the river mouth during 1986–1987, approximately 425 000 parr and smolts, and 122 000 growers have escaped. Between 1987 and 2001, farmed salmon occurred in the rod fishery in 13 of the 15 years, contributing at least 5.8% of the total catch, with a maximum annual frequency of 27.1%. It was estimated that <1% of fish escaping from the marine cages entered the river, but contributed at least 27% of potential anadromous spawners in 1997. Radiotagged, farmed fish in 2001 probably spawned in three subcatchments also used by tagged wild fish. Despite the likelihood of hybridisation there was no change in the median weight or marine age of wild fish, but smolt age decreased significantly ( P  < 0.02). The Ewe has a depleted wild salmon population (≤900 anadromous adults), and further genetic introgression by escapees should be prevented.  相似文献

A total of 21 acidified Norwegian rivers are now being limed to re‐establish or restore Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., stocks. Natural reproduction of Atlantic salmon was evident 1 year after the first year of liming in all rivers that had lost their native stocks (n = 9) except for one river. The density of fry (age 0+) developed significantly more rapidly in rivers that supported remnant stocks than in rivers that had lost their stocks, based on data 5 years after treatment. Nine of the study rivers were supplied with hatchery‐reared salmon, mainly unfed fry. Of the rivers with lost stocks, those which were supplied with fish had significantly higher densities than those that were not enhanced. On the other hand, rivers with remnant stocks that were supplied with fish had significantly lower densities of salmon fry than those that did not undergo such mitigation measures. In 2001, all limed rivers yielded 41.9 t of salmon.  相似文献

Abstract  The role of nutrients in the production of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., in oligotrophic upland catchments is poorly understood. Atlantic salmon carcasses were introduced to 12 upland streams in the River Conon catchment, Scotland, UK, to assess potential nutrient limitation and evaluate a potential role for migratory Atlantic salmon in nutrient import. The objective was to test the hypothesis that nutrient supplementation would increase juvenile Atlantic salmon biomass. Streams received one of six treatment levels up to a maximum of one carcass per 15 m2 of wetted area with duplicates at each level, and study areas were sampled to measure salmon biomass in treated and reference reaches. There was a significant positive relationship between treatment addition level and response of juvenile salmon biomass. At higher carcass addition levels, salmon biomass in treatment sections was approximately twice that in paired reference sections. The results are discussed in the light of management methods in upland regions and the likely role of cultural oligotrophication in suppressing current levels of salmon production.  相似文献
