We investigated whether Fraser strain Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus L. reared in fresh water (FW) differed in survival and growth from full siblings transferred to brackish water (BW) and whether family performance was consistent throughout 1 year of commercial growth. Fish were grown communally (n = 3600) in either FW or BW from May 2008 to May 2009. Mean family survival in BW was moderately correlated with mean family survival in FW (= 0.342; = 0.032). Fish which survived until the conclusion of the experiment were significantly heavier in body weight at the baseline assessment than their full‐sibs which died. Family by treatment interactions were detected for body weight, condition factor and specific growth across all measurement dates (May 2008, October 2008 and May 2009) and growth intervals. Despite the varied response of families to treatment, mean family body weight in FW was correlated phenotypically with BW body weight in October 2008 (= 0.633, < 0.0001) and marginally correlated in May 2009 (= 0.289, = 0.061). These data suggest that body weight in FW and body weight in BW should be analysed as separate, but correlated traits in Arctic charr breeding programs.  相似文献

The dietary methionine requirement of juvenile Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus (L.) was assessed by feeding diets supplemented with graded levels of DL-methionine (9, 12, 15, 18, 21, and 24 g kg−1dietary protein) for 16 weeks at 12°C. All diets contained 400 g kg−1 protein, 170 g kg−1 lipid, 66 g kg−1 ash and an estimated 17.5 MJ digestible energy (DE) kg−1. When live-weight gain was examined using quadratic regression, the estimate of methionine requirement for optimal growth was 17.6 g kg−1 of dietary protein (DP) or 7 g kg−1 of the diet. Requirements estimated on the basis of carcass protein and energy gains were 18.8 and 17.9 g kg−1 DP, respectively. Plasma methionine concentrations and ocular focal length variability measurements did not provide a sensitive measure of requirement, because each responded in a linear fashion to increasing dietary methionine levels. Based on the prevalence of cataracts, the methionine level required to prevent lens pathology (26.7 g kg−1 DP) appears to be higher than that required for maximum growth.  相似文献

Young Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus (L.), mean weight 2.56 ± 0.02 g, were fed nine isoenergetic (?16.6 MJ digestible energy (DE) kg?1) practical diets formulated to supply digestible crude protein (DCP) at 40g kg?1 increments from 230 to 550g kg?1, for 84 days. Mean weight gain (MWG) and specific growth rate (SGR) were determined every 14 days while carcass composition was determined at the start and end of the experiment. Growth responses attained the highest values in the fish fed the diet with 350 g kg?1 DCP. Carcass moisture gain, protein gain and apparent net lipid accumulation increased as DCP levels increased to a maximum at 350 g kg?1 after which there were no differences among treatments. Total carcass lipid and lipid gain decreased as dietary DCP increased up to 470 g kg?1 with no differences thereafter. Apparent net protein accretion decreased with increasing DCP levels up to 350 g kg?1 after which there were few differences among treaments. Protein requirements were estimated by fitting MWG and SGR data to broken line regression, quadratic and saturation kinetics models. Results from these analyses suggest that dietary DCP should be provided at between 340 and 392 g kg?1 (equivalent to ?370 and 420g kg?1 crude protein) for optimal growth of young Arctic charr reared in similar conditions.  相似文献

Intraspecific phenotypic diversity is the raw material for evolution, so understanding its origin and maintenance is critically important for conservation of biodiversity. Intraspecific diversity in a trait or a suite of traits can result from genetic diversity and/or phenotypic plasticity. The two are, however, not independent as plasticity has been shown to evolve. In this study, we evaluated the importance of phenotypic plasticity in generating morphological diversity in populations of small benthic Arctic charr in Iceland, using a rearing experiment with contrasting modes of feeding. We also examined the association between phenotypic plasticity in offspring groups generated by the contrasting feeding modes and important ecological variables characterising the natural habitats of the respective populations. Although the level of plasticity could not be related to any of the ecological measurements, clear differences in morphological reaction norms among populations suggest that plasticity is an important aspect of morphological diversity of the charr. It is not clear whether that plasticity is adaptive, but it is notable that reaction norms in all populations have similar reaction to the treatments.  相似文献

Abstract –  The Arctic charr occurs in lakes across Britain and Ireland and was previously described here as 15 separate species. Most authorities now agree that all these stocks belong to a single polymorphic species complex Salvelinus alpinus (L.). This fish is given little protection in British and Irish law and there has been a steady loss of natural populations in recent years in all the countries concerned. A few new stocks have been created either intentionally or accidentally. In Scotland, only a small proportion of the 258 recorded natural populations has been studied and at least 12 of these are now extinct. There are at least four introduced populations originating from native Scottish stocks, but the fate of stocks introduced from Canada for aquaculture is uncertain. In England, there are eight extant populations in Cumbria and four others extinct. The status of introduced stocks in England is uncertain but there is probably one population surviving in Yorkshire. In Wales, eight lakes with resident Arctic charr populations have been recorded, three of these populations are natural, one is extinct and four have been introduced. In Ireland, of the 74 known populations, approximately 30% are extinct. There is no evidence to indicate that introduced stocks (some of them from Iceland) in a small number of lakes have survived there. A range of factors is involved in the extinction of populations and these include pollution, eutrophication, acidification, afforestation, engineering, exploitation, aquaculture, introductions and climate change. Much research remains to be done and unique stocks of this valuable species will continue to be lost unless positive action is taken through local conservation management backed by appropriate national legislation.  相似文献

There would appear to be considerable potential for Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus (L.), to be cultured in marine conditions in countries where coastal winter salinity is below oceanic, and temperatures remain above freezing. Sea lochs on the west coast of Scotland represent one such environment where freshwater run-off leads to depressed salinities (20-30 practical salinity units) and the North Atlantic Drift leads to winter sea water temperatures typically around 6-8oC.  相似文献

Abstract  A hatchery experiment was organised to find out if the high loss rate of coded wire tags, noticed in connection with an Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus (L.) restocking programme, was size-dependent and also to test head moulds for future taggings. Six moulds made by Northwest Marine Technology Inc. and five moulds made at the Finnish Game and Fisheries Research Institute were used. A total of 100 charr were tagged with standard-length coded wire tags using each mould. One-summer old charr at tagging were held for 534 days and two-summer old charr for 320 days. The tag loss rate varied between 0% and 54% and was negatively related to the size of the charr at tagging. The high loss rate was connected with the poor alignment of some moulds, such that a large proportion of the tags were located in the nasal cavity instead of the nasal cartilage. Testing of the moulds and careful grading of the fish for tagging is emphasised, especially if Arctic charr smaller than 20 g in weight are to be tagged.  相似文献

During early feeding of Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) with commercial salmon feed, a proportion (2–14%) of the fry were found to have large particles lodged in the forward part of the alimentary canal. These particles were found to be part of the roughage component of the feed. It is considered that they would have led to the death by starvation of the fry which had ingested them.  相似文献

Abstract Arctic charr populations in southern latitudes are nonmigratory, with all life‐stages limited to freshwater lakes and in‐ or out‐flowing tributaries. Although many of these populations are reported to also spawn in lake littorals, little is known about the physical characteristics of putative spawning grounds. A total of 23 discrete spawning sites within three Irish lakes were located by fyke netting of spawning adults and snorkelling in littoral habitats. Spawning sites were found to be long, narrow strips running parallel to the shore at a maximum depth of 124 cm. Spawning sites were limited to areas of coarse mineral substrate with an adequate (c. 8 cm) depth of clean interstitial spaces. In individual lakes, combined areas of spawning sites made up 0.4–0.7% of available littoral. Egg densities varied considerably between sites (33–900·eggs m?2) and were significantly correlated with gradient and width of spawning sites. No evidence of redd digging was found. The shallow, localised and restricted nature of spawning grounds makes such populations vulnerable to anthropogenically induced postoviposition changes in surface water level, eutrophication processes such as increased lake sedimentation and elevated nutrient status.  相似文献

We examined the amount and distribution of molecular variation at microsatellite loci in 21 broodstocks of Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus derived from the Fraser River, Labrador and the Nauyuk Lake, Nunavut, Canada. Our goal was to assess the amount of genetic diversity and differentiation as broodstocks are subdivided and propagated in different hatcheries and grow‐out facilities. We observed significant heterogeneity across pairs of ancestral and descendant broodstocks in the mean numbers of alleles at microsatellite loci. We detected a significant decrease in the observed heterozygosity between ancestors and descendants but the amount of decrease did not depend on either the degree of removal from the wild (number of sequential transfers) or the strain (Fraser vs. Nauyuk). Based on allele frequency distributions, there was little genetic evidence of bottlenecks during the creation of subsequent broodstock populations after the initial founding events. All broodstock samples were significantly differentiated from each other but those within the same strain were more similar to each other than to broodstocks from different strains. Broodstocks from the Nauyuk Lake broodstocks showed greater differentiation from each other than did Fraser River broodstocks, which could be attributed to differences in the number of founders.  相似文献

Abstract. Several investigations have used Cr2O3 (chromic oxide) as an indigestible marker in digestibility studies. However, in this review the effect of chromic oxide on dietary lipid during passage through the digestive tract, and the gastrointestinal microflora in long-term nutrition studies in Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus (L.), are discussed. Based on these results it is suggested that the use of chromic oxide may lead to erroneous results. Furthermore, this paper focuses on the effect of dietary linoleic add (18:2 n–6), acetate and salinity on lipid and individual fatty acid digestibilities in Arctic charr.
No full studies have been carried out regarding the essential fatty acid requirement (EFA) of Arctic charr. Available data indicate that (n–3) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are the prime EFA, as in most other salmonids. Furthermore, quantitative EFAn requirements may be higher than the 1% dietary level described for other salmonids. Feeding (n–3) PUFAs at 1% lead to high contents of (n–9) PUFAs in the polar lipids, presently recognized as'indicators'of EFA deficiency. Moreover, this review focuses on elongation and desaturation of short-chain EFA to their C20 C 22 counterparts, and the feedback inhibition of this ability.  相似文献

Ecology of Freshwater Fish 2011: 20: 5–13. © 2010 John Wiley & Sons A/S Abstract –  In the face of widespread environmental change impacts, there is a need to better understand mechanisms promoting flexibility and resilience of ecosystem components to such change to inform strategies for conservation. Glacial relict species are especially vulnerable to such changes. We investigated the behavioural responses of a native, glacial relict species, Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) to long‐term environmental changes. It was hypothesised that changes in feeding behaviour would occur as a key intermediary to reduction in habitat availability (through climate change and eutrophication) or competitive interactions [with introduced roach (Rutilus rutilus)]. Stomach content analysis was used to assess the diet of 199 charr caught from Windermere, United Kingdom, in the months of March, June, September and November 2003–2007. The results were compared to data from 1940 to 1951 prior to the environmental changes and revealed a marked increase in the contribution of benthic invertebrates in the present diet. Stable isotope analysis confirms the results of the stomach analysis, suggesting that the charr have switched their diet from zooplanktivory towards benthivory. We discuss the possibility that habitat modification and roach population expansion in Windermere have contributed to changes in charr diet. Complementary studies suggest that this diet shift is more likely to be a response to the increasing roach population than to habitat modification; however, further study in Windermere would be required to elucidate the exact mechanism. Long‐term data sets such as these provide information that is useful for determining the directivity of ecological change and the capability of species to respond to change.  相似文献

Predator conditioning can be used to improve post‐release antipredator recognition of hatchery‐reared salmonids. However, possible negative stress‐related effects of prolonged predator conditioning on juvenile fish physiology are poorly understood. We studied the effects of prolonged (91 days) predator odour exposure on whole‐body cortisol level and spleen size in six full‐sib families of juvenile hatchery‐bred Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus). Chemical cues from water containing charr‐fed pikeperch (Sander lucioperca) were used as the predator exposure stimuli and lakewater was used as a chemical control. Our study revealed that juvenile body cortisol levels post‐predator conditioning were affected by treatment, fish size and their interaction. Importantly, among the smaller (i.e. slowest growing) charr, the predator‐exposed fish had higher cortisol levels than control fish, while the opposite pattern was true for the larger fish. These results suggest that chemical cues from charr‐fed predators induce a prolonged stress response in juvenile charr. As prolonged predation exposure seems to elevate stress levels in a size‐dependent manner, the larger, faster growing fish could possibly have intrinsically lower stress responses to predation threats than smaller, slower growing fish. Possible coupling between stress sensitivity and growth requires further attention due to the likely implications for the management of unintended domestication among captive‐reared salmonids.  相似文献

Anadromous Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus (L.), from the River Halselva in Finnmark, northern Norway, were used as broodstock for the production of smolts. During the smolting period the fish were either shielded from normal working routines, subjected to normal work routines, or exposed to excessive work routines (stress) within the hatchery. None of the handling routines affected the gill-Na-K-ATPase activity, or the hypoosmoregulatory capacity of the charr. Compared with normal handling, neither stress nor shielding caused any significant difference in the migratory behaviour of the charr, in the duration of the sea residence, or in homing success. However, the stressed group did show a lymphocytopenia at end of the rearing period.  相似文献

Muscle carotenoid concentrations were measured in immature and maturing 2+ Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus (L.), sampled from April until ovulation started in November. In immature fish, muscle carotenoid concentration increased steadily and had reached about 10 mg kg?1 by the end of the experiment. In mature fish of both sexes, pigment concentrations decreased during the autumn and muscle carotenoid concentrations were significantly lower than in the immature fish during the latter stages of the trial. No significant difference in muscle pigmentation was observed between sexes. Carotenoid concentrations were lowest in the cranial region of the fillet, but decreased in all parts of the fillet when the charr became mature. In females, the decrease seemed to be most marked in the caudal region. At the termination of the experiment, fillets accounted for about one-half of the carotenoid content in mature fish of both sexes. High concentrations of pigment were recorded in the skin and fins of mature males. In mature female charr, pigment was almost equally distributed among skin, fins and ovaries  相似文献
