Three related Irish wolfhound dogs less than one year old presented with a history of chronic nasal discharge and signs of lower respiratory tract disease. These responded well to treatment initially but were chronically recurring. Cursory evaluation of the immune system (full blood counts, globulin determination and fractionation, electrophoresis and lymphocyte blastogenesis) seemed to indicate a cell-mediated immunodeficiency which, because of the age of the patients, Is strongly suspected to be primary.  相似文献

The biplanar umbilical vein portovenograms of 49 newborn puppies and the biplanar mesenteric vein portovenograms, obtained during surgery, of 42 adult dogs with left divisional intrahepatic portosystemic shunts consistent with a patent ductus venosus (PDV) were reviewed. On the basis of the combined surgical, postmortem and imaging data, the left divisional intrahepatic portosystemic shunts were consistent, each having a straight vessel which drained into a venous ampulla before draining into the caudal vena cava at the level of the diaphragm. The left phrenic vein and the left hepatic vein both entered the ampulla independently of the shunting vessel. The morphology of the ductus venosus in the pups was similar and consistent with the morphology of the left divisional intrahepatic PDV shunt of the adult dogs. It is concluded that this form of left divisional shunt is correctly named a PDV and is the result of the persistence of the fetal ductus venosus. From the surgical records it is concluded that all the shunts described as a PDV were attenuated by the direct manipulation of the ductus venosus before its entry into the ampulla.  相似文献

The biplanar mesenteric vein portovenograms of 10 cats with left divisional intrahepatic portosystemic shunts consistent with a patent ductus venosus (PDV) were reviewed. A corrosion cast of the hepatic portal vasculature was made post mortem from one individual that died post operatively following surgical attenuation of the shunting vessel. On the basis of the combined surgical, post mortem and imaging data, these left divisional shunts were found to have consistent anatomy, each having a straight vessel which drained into a venous ampulla before draining into the caudal vena cava at the level of the diaphragm. The left phrenic vein and left hepatic vein both entered the ampulla independently of the shunting vessel. The anatomical similarity between these findings in the cat and the PDV in the dog suggest that it is appropriate to describe this particular portosystemic shunt as a PDV.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to compare the echocardiographic features of Irish wolfhounds with clinically inapparent dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) (n = 33) to dogs with advanced DCM (n = 33) and to normal dogs (n = 262). Significant differences were detected between the three groups. In dogs with DCM, the most sensitive diagnostic measurements were: end-systolic volume index (ESVI), E-point to septal separation (EPSS), fractional shortening (FS), and left ventricular internal dimensions (LVIDd and LVIDs). Left atrial diameter was increased markedly in dogs with DCM and 83.3% of affected Irish wolfhounds had concurrent atrial fibrillation. Compared with early DCM, in advanced DCM there was a significant increase in end-diastolic right ventricular diameter, often combined with extensive pleural effusion, the leading sign of congestive heart failure in Irish wolfhounds.  相似文献

Records of previous electrocardiographic (ECG) and echocardiographic examinations of 39 Irish wolfhounds with cardiac failure, obtained during a 10-year survey, were examined to establish whether previously detected abnormalities might be prognostic indicators for the development of congestive heart failure (CHF) due to dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in later life. Eighteen dogs (46 per cent) had had atrial fibrillation (AF) at their first examination. Other ECG abnormalities detected at previous examinations were ventricular and supraventricular premature contractions, first and second degree atrioventricular block, P mitrale and left anterior fascicular and right bundle branch blocks. All 39 dogs had developed AF by the time of onset of CHF. The mean age at which CHF was diagnosed was 77 months in males and 86 months in females. The mean age at which AF was first detected was 45 months in males and 59 months in females, and the mean time from the first detection of AF to CHF was 27 months in males and 24 months in females. Previous echocardiographic examinations in eight dogs, over a period of up to five years, revealed progressive left atrial and left ventricular dilatation. Fractional shortening was reduced to below the normal range at the onset of CHF compared with previous examinations in three cases but increased in five. It appears, therefore, that certain ECG abnormalities, especially AF, and/or progressive ventricular and atrial dilatation, may be indicators of 'occult' DCM in wolfhounds.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Irish Wolfhounds frequently have a congenital portosystemic shunt, but a considerable proportion of the 6- to 8-wk-old pups has hyperammonemia in the absence of portosystemic shunting. This hyperammonemia causes no signs and is transient, normalizing at the age of 3-4 months. HYPOTHESIS: Transient hyperammonemia has a metabolic basis in Irish Wolfhounds. ANIMALS: Two related (same sire) litters of Irish Wolfhounds (17 pups) and their parents were studied. METHODS: Integrity of the portal circulation was examined by ultrasonography and scintigraphy. Absence of parenchymal liver disease was verified by liver biopsy. Amino acid profiles were measured in 4 pups and repeated in 2 of these pups when ammonia concentrations had normalized. The amino acid profiles were compared with those of healthy Irish Wolfhound pups. RESULTS: Fasting venous ammonia concentrations were high (113-622 microg/dL, 65-345 micromol/L) in all pups, whereas bile acids were within reference range in all but 1. The ammonia and bile acid concentrations from all parents were within reference range. Portosystemic shunting was excluded in all but 1 pup. Liver biopsy excluded significant lesions in all 10 pups examined. Hypercitrullinemia was found and persisted even when ammonia had normalized, at the expense of an increase in glutamine and asparagine. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Citrulline concentrations are controlled by the urea cycle enzymes argininosuccinase and argininosuccinate synthetase, and a defect in either of these enzymes may be responsible for the transient hyperammonemia in Irish Wolfhounds. Resolution of the hyperammonemia is associated with increased activity of alternative metabolic pathways forming glutamine and asparagine. Confirmation requires measurement of enzyme activities in liver tissue.  相似文献

Two three-month-old, male Irish wolfhound siblings were diagnosed with breed-typical left divisional congenital intrahepatic portosystemic shunts consistent with patent ductus venosus. The shunts were amenable to surgical dissection at a posthepatic location. Both dogs had cellophane banding for shunt attenuation. One dog was euthanased after developing post-ligation neurological dysfunction, which was refractory to treatment. The other dog survived and demonstrated shunt attenuation. Successful surgical management using cellophane banding of a patent ductus venosus has not been previously described in a large-breed dog.  相似文献

A 2.5-year-old dog with signs of weight loss, vomiting, and hepatic encephalopathy was diagnosed with a patent ductus venosus, based on serum biochemical analysis, jejunal portography, and biopsies, and treated with lactulose, antibiotics, and a reduced protein diet. Arterial blood pressure measurements were obtained from 158 healthy Irish wolfhounds using the oscillometric technique to establish reference values for the breed. In contrast to other sight hounds, Irish wolfhounds have low arterial blood pressure. Mean systolic pressure for the group was 116.0 mm Hg. Mean diastolic pressure was 69.2 mm Hg, and the mean value for mean arterial pressure was 87.8 mm Hg. Blood pressure measurements were higher in older wolfhounds than in young dogs. There was no difference between systolic and mean arterial blood pressures in lateral recumbency compared to standing position. However, diastolic pressure was slightly lower when standing. Calm dogs had lower pressure than anxious wolfhounds. There was a significant interaction between the effects of age, gender, and mood on systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial blood pressure values.  相似文献

On the basis of clinical observations, Irish wolfhounds were suspected as being subject to a relatively high incidence of soft testicular consistency and low semen quality. Thirty-seven Irish wolfhounds and 67 dogs of other breeds (control group) were therefore examined. Conventional andrological studies were performed in both groups, these included libido testing, palpation and measurement of testes and semen evaluation. Semen evaluation was performed both manually and by videomicrographic analysis. Testosterone concentrations were measured both before and after human chorionic gonadotropin challenge in the Irish wolfhounds. The Irish wolfhounds had lower libidos than the control group. More Irish wolfhounds (21-2 per cent) exhibited low semen quality than the control group (6-1 per cent). Soft testicular consistency occurred more frequently in Irish wolfhounds (25-7 per cent) than in the control group (10-5 per cent). In the control group, bodyweight correlated significantly with total sperm count. Serum testosterone concentration did not correlate with semen quality parameters.  相似文献

Patent ductus venosus was identified in a young dog. Surgical attenuation of the anomalous vessel was performed by partial ligation of the left hepatic vein. Clinical signs resolved after surgery, and laboratory values returned to normal. Jejunal venous portography, performed 8 weeks after surgery, revealed complete occlusion of the patent ductus venosus, with normal portal vasculature to the right and central divisions of the liver. Atrophy of the left hepatic division resulted.  相似文献

Measurements of the inner diameters (calibers) of the ductus arteriosus (DA) and pulmonary artery (PA) were made in late fetal rats and newborn rats, the latter being obtained by spontaneous or caesarean delivery. The fetal and newborn pups were frozen instantly with an acetone-dry ice mixture. The chests of these whole-body frozen pups were shaved with a surgical knife gradually from the back toward the ventral side to expose the DA and PA for measurements of their calibers. As a result, it was revealed that the DA was almost closed 180 min after birth, but that the closure and shrinkage of the DA were accelerated to some extent by caesarean delivery. On the other hand, there was no remarkable change in the PA throughout the postnatal period observed, regardless of the type of delivery, spontaneous or caesarean.  相似文献

The haemodynamics of the canine left renal artery (LRA) and interlobar artery (ILA) were evaluated in eleven fasted, healthy, conscious beagles with severe acute (haematocrit [Hct] 16%), moderate chronic (Hct 26%) and mild chronic (Hct 34%) normovolaemic anaemia using Doppler ultrasound. Heart rate, peak systolic velocity (PSV), end diastolic velocity (EDV), time-averaged mean velocity (TAVmean), pulsatility index (PI) and resistive index (RI) were recorded. Doppler values in the dogs following the induction of anaemia states were compared with corresponding values in the same dogs prior to the induction of anaemia. Left renal artery mean PSV, mean PI and mean RI were significantly higher and the mean EDV was significantly lower in severe acute anaemia. No significant change was seen in mean values of the same parameters in moderate or mild chronic anaemia. There was no significant change in TAVmean of the LRA or mean PI and mean RI of the ILA in any grade of anaemia. Acute, severe normovolaemic anaemia significantly altered LRA Doppler parameters in resting dogs without influencing those of the ILA. Moderate or mild chronic anaemia had no effect on any renal Doppler parameter.  相似文献

This study was performed to characterize the normal blood flow of the canine testis and to measure the peak systolic velocity (PSV), end-diastolic velocity (EDV), resistive index (RI) and pulsatility index (PI) of testicular arteries weekly during a period of 6 months in five healthy Beagle dogs and to evaluate whether there were any change along this time. The ultrasonographic exams were made with an 11 MHz linear transducer. The vessels of the testes were subdivided into three categories: supratesticular arteries, marginal artery and intratesticular vessels. At the supratesticular arteries, two measurements were recorded at the cranial and the looping parts. No significant differences in any of the parameters studied were observed for the 6 months that the study was performed. The cranial part of the supratesticular artery showed a flow pattern of high-resistive vessel, whereas in the looping part of the supratesticular artery, marginal and intratesticular arteries, the flow showed a low-resistance pattern. PSV, RI and PI values were higher at the cranial part of the supratesticular artery, followed by the looping part of the supratesticular artery, marginal and intratesticular vessels. EDV measurements were higher in the looping part of the supratesticular artery.  相似文献
