Some biochemical indices in naturally occurring fascioliasis in goats   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Some biochemical indices were assayed in goats naturally harbouring Fasciola gigantica infection and compared with uninfected control goats. Infected goats had significantly lower levels of serum glucose (47.6 +/- 1.8 mg dl-1) and albumin (3.1 +/- 0.1 g dl-1) and reduced albumin:globulin ratio (1.1 +/- 0.1). Total lipid (526.8 +/- 2.4 mg dl-1), serum glutamate dehydrogenase (15.3 +/- 0.9 iu litre-1) and serum alkaline phosphatase (31.6 +/- 1.9 Kind's and King's unit dl-1) were high in infected goats. No significant changes could be recorded in serum total protein, cholesterol and phospholipids.  相似文献

Sahel goats, also known as Borno whites are found in the northern semi-arid, tsetse free Sahel region of Nigeria. They are transported alongside cattle from this zone to all other zones in the country, including the tsetse-infested zones, for commercial purposes and are kept for some time in these tsetse-infested zones until they are sold. This study therefore assessed the susceptibility of this breed of goats to trypanosome infection and its response to treatment with Berenil. Six bucks were inoculated intravenously with Trypanosoma vivax through the jugular vein while two served as uninfected control. The mean pre-patent period was 4.5 days and increasing parasitaemia followed the establishment of infection. Onset of parasitaemia was associated with increase in rectal temperature in all the infected goats and the temperature peak coincided with the only parasitaemic peak second week post-infection. The infected goats were treated with Berenil (Hoechst, Germany) 3.5mg/kg body weight at 4 weeks post-infection. The packed cell volume (PCV) continued to fall from a mean 30.73+/-0.01% pre-infection to a mean 13.21+/-0.18% at 1 week post-treatment. Deaths were recorded for 4 of the infected goats 1 week post-treatment while the remaining two died 2 weeks post-treatment, not responding to treatment.  相似文献

Dehorning adult cattle is a surgical procedure causing distress of varying intensities that can be reflected in behavioural changes and alterations in plasma cortisol levels. Stress responses during the dehorning process were evaluated in 18 Red Pied cows. The cows were divided into 3 groups of six and kept in tie-stall housing. Those in the first group were dehorned under general anaesthesia (GA) induced by intravenous administration of xylazine and ketamine. The second group was dehorned under sedation and local anaesthesia (SLA) induced by intramuscular administration of xylazine and local anaesthesia with lidocaine. The third group was dehorned under local anaesthesia (LA) with lidocaine. Dehorning was performed with a foetotomy wire. Blood samples were taken 0.5 h before dehorning to determine cortisol levels, and, by means of a central venous catheter inserted into the jugular vein, during surgery at 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 h post-surgery. Concurrently, occurrence of stress behaviours was assessed. Cortisol levels were measured by enzyme immunoassay (EIA). The lowest mean peak levels of plasma cortisol (82.53 +/- 6.04 nmol l(-1)), the most rapid return of plasma cortisol levels to baseline values (1.92 +/- 1.11 h), and the lowest occurrence of stress behaviours (2.38 +/- 5.83%) were noted in the SLA group. The highest mean peak levels plasma cortisol (113.86 +/- 25.65 nmol l(-1)), the slowest return of plasma cortisol levels to baseline values (3.83 +/- 2.18 h) and the most frequent occurrence of stress behaviours (65.48 +/- 28.72%) were observed in the LA group. There were significant differences between the SLA and LA groups in peak plasma cortisol levels (p = 0.011) and in occurrence of stress behaviours (p = 0.003). Sedation induced by intramuscular administration of xylazine in conjunction with local anaesthesia with lidocaine is considered the most suitable method of anaesthesia when dehorning adult cattle. Local anaesthesia with lidocaine alone was least suitable.  相似文献

Angora goats do not cope well with stress compared with goats of other breeds. Our hypothesis that this involves subclinical primary hypoadrenocorticism associated with low cortisol release in response to ACTH stimulation was tested by measuring adrenocortical response (plasma cortisol) in six Spanish (37 +/- 2 kg BW) and six Angora wethers (39 +/- 3 kg BW) under simulated acute and chronic ACTH challenges. In Exp. 1 (acute ACTH challenge), wethers were dosed i.v. with high (2.5 IU/kg BW) or low (.4 IU/kg BW) quantities of ACTH. In Exp. 2 (chronic ACTH challenge), ACTH at the rate of .015 IU/(kg BW x min) or saline (.15 M NaCl) was infused i.v. at 15 mL/h for 6 h. The mean baseline plasma cortisol concentration before ACTH stimulation was similar (P > .05) between Angora and Spanish goats in Exp. 1 (averaged over days) and in Exp. 2. The cortisol concentration response area (ng/ (mL x min) x 10(-3)) above the baseline was similar (P > .05) between Angora and Spanish goats during low (7.6 +/- .5 and 9.0 +/- 1.7, respectively) and high (12.8 +/- 1.0 and 16.0 +/- 1.8, respectively) levels of acute ACTH challenge (Exp. 1) and during chronic ACTH challenge (45.1 +/- 5.9 and 41.8 +/- 7.3, respectively; Exp. 2). In conclusion, these data indicate that, under the conditions of this study, adrenocortical responsiveness to ACTH stimulation is not different between Angora and Spanish goat wethers and, thus, may not contribute to stress susceptibility in Angora goats.  相似文献

The relationship between salivary and plasma levels of total and free cortisol was monitored in 97 male piglets, aged two to four weeks, subjected to castration. Samples were taken 10 minutes before (basal value) as well as one, two, three, four and 24 hours post castration and at the same time intervals from a control group of 17 animals which did not undergo surgery. Simultaneously to blood (indwelling catheter) withdrawing saliva was collected by two cotton swabs. Cortisol levels were measured by radioimmunoassay (RIA). A highly significant increase in total, free and salivary cortisol was found within the first four hours after castration compared to the control group. The percentage increase one hour after castration above basal values was highest in free plasma cortisol (21.08 +/- 2.03 nmol/l vs. 61.26 +/- 4.16 nmol/l; 290.6%), and lowest in total plasma cortisol (177.33 +/- 9.69 nmol/l vs. 374.09 +/- 18.21 nmol/l; 211.0%), whereas salivary cortisol showed an 255.7% increase (10.46 +/- 1.03 nmol/l vs. 26.75 +/- 1.93 nmol/l). Total cortisol included 11.9-16.4% free cortisol. Salivary cortisol concentration was between 5.9% and 7.5% of the total plasma cortisol concentration. The highest correlation between total plasma cortisol and salivary cortisol occurred one hour after castration (r = 0.57; p < 0.01). The correlation between free and salivary cortisol was lowest for basal values (r = 0.27; p < 0.05), whereas correlations for the remaining time points were highly significant (0.41 < or = r < or = 0.61; p < 0.01). For the control group significant correlations were found between salivary and total plasma cortisol (0.58 < or = r < or = 0.89; p < 0.05) and between free and salivary cortisol (0.63 < or = r < or = 0.92; p < 0.05). The present work indicates that the measurement of salivary levels of cortisol reflects the concentration of this hormone in plasma samples of piglets.  相似文献

Vitamin B12 deficiency was induced in 15 small East African goats by feeding cobalt deficient Chloris gayana hay (containing 0.02 mg of Co/kg dry matter) over a 25 week experimental period. Cobalt was supplemented as an oral drench to supply 0.3 g of Co/goat/week to 15 treated goats. At intervals of 3-4 weeks, serum concentrations of Vitamin B12 , total thyroxine (TT4), free tetra-iodothyronine (FT4) and free tri-iodothyronine (FT3) were determined by radioimmunoassay, while the rate of resting metabolism was determined by measuring the goats' rate of oxygen consumption. Serum Vitamin B12 concentration was significantly higher (p<0.01) in cobalt-treated (289.6 +/- 40.76 pg/ml) than in control (142.8 +/- 28.27 pg/ml) goats. The mean serum TT4 concentration was significantly (p<0.01) higher in control (59.0 +/- 1.70 nmol/l) than in cobalt-treated (51.6 +/- 2.45 nmol/l) goats. However, the levels of FT4, FT3 and the rate of resting metabolism were unaffected by the goats' cobalt status. Furthermore, the goats did not lose weight or become anaemic.  相似文献

The present study was carried out to assess the endocrine status and liver function in adult cows reared in polluted environment around different industrial units in India. The effect on endocrine system was examined by determination of plasma level of thyroid hormones, thyroxin (T4) (n=269) and triidothyronin (T3) (n=269), stress hormone cortisol (n=266), and reproductive hormones such as estradiol (n=84) and progesterone (n=84) in cows (>3 years) reared around different polluted industrial and non-polluted areas. The respective blood lead and cadmium concentration was also determined in all the cows. The mean plasma levels of both T3 and T4 were significantly (P<0.05) higher around lead zinc smelter (2.43+/-0.26 and 41.1+/-2.9nmol/L) and closed lead cum operational zinc smelter (1.81+/-0.16 and 42.4+/-6.2nmol/L), where the mean blood lead level (0.86+/-0.06 and 0.51+/-0.09mug/ml) was also significantly higher than that of cows (0.07+/-0.01mug/ml) from unpolluted areas.Regression analysis of data from 269 cows revealed a significant (P<0.01) positive correlation between the blood lead and plasma T3 (r=0.287) and T4 (r=0.173).The correlation between thyroidal hormones and the blood cadmium concentration (r=-0.079 and -0.48; P>0.05) was not significant.Plasma cortisol level had also a non-significant (P>0.05) correlation (r=-0.092) with blood lead level. However, the mean cortisol level (4.02+/-1.96nmol/L) of cows in phosphate rock mining areas was significantly (P<0.05) higher than that of controls (1.98+/-0.70nmol/L). The mean plasma estradiol level was significantly (P<0.05) higher in cows around closed lead cum operational zinc smelter (47.1+/-19.5pg/ml) than that of the control animals (21.8+/-3.9pg/ml) and in rest of the areas, the difference did not reach the statistical significance (P>0.05).The serum biochemical analysis in 36 cows around lead-zinc smelter with the highest mean blood lead level (0.86+/-0.06mug/ml) amongst all the industrial/urban areas surveyed, and in 15 animals from non-polluted areas revealed a significant positive correlation between blood lead and serum ALT (alanine transaminase) (r=0.688, P<0.01) and AST (aspartate transaminase) (r=0.390, P<0.01) and a negative correlation with serum total lipids (r=-0.337, P<0.05), total protein (r=-0.449, P<0.01) and albumin(r=-0.662, P<0.01). It is concluded from the study that the natural exposure to lead in polluted environments disturbs the endocrine profile and the higher blood lead level alters serum biochemical parameters indicative of liver functions.  相似文献

Anaemia is the most prominent clinical sign of trypanosomosis in domestic animals but little is known about its pathogenesis. This work investigated erythrophagocytosis as the possible cause of anaemia. Pathogenic Trypanosoma congolense (IL3000) was intravenously inoculated into six goats at 3x10(6) trypanosomes per goat. Six other goats were maintained as controls. The infection was studied for 10 weeks and parasitaemia, packed cell volume (PCV) and serum protein levels were determined. The amount of erythrophagocytosis was determined from the amount of 51Cr-labelled red blood cells (RBCs) phagocytosed by self mononuclear cells (MNCs) in vitro and by microscopically counting phagocytosed RBCs on Giemsa stained smears of incubated mixtures of RBCs and self MNCs. The infection resulted in trypanosomosis with rapid progressive anaemia and mean peaks of parasitaemia of about 3x10(3)ml(-1). In infected goats, a significant (P<0.05) mean reduction in PCV (of 37-22%) was observed starting from about 20 days up to 56 days post-infection. Within this same phase, significant (P<0.05) differences in mean radioactivity counts of (51)Cr incorporated into MNCs were observed with infected goats' samples having counts 50% higher than the control goats' samples. Microscopically, the mean number of phagocytosed RBCs in infected goats' MNCs was noted to be 80% higher (P<0.05) than that of control goats. Appreciable increases (P<0.05) in mean serum globulin levels, from 3.5 to 4.7g/dl, were observed within 3 weeks of infection. The study showed that erythrophagocytosis is an important mechanism leading to anaemia in the pathophysiology of T. congolense infection in Zambian goats.  相似文献

The pharmacokinetics and the effects of the opioid buprenorphine on behavior, cardiovascular parameters, plasma concentrations of cortisol and vasopressin were studied in the goat. After intravenous injection at a dosage of 0.02 mg/kg bw, the terminal half-life was 73.8+/-19.9 min (mean+/-SD), the apparent volume of distribution 5.22+/-1.01 L/kg, and total body clearance 79.1+/-18.5 mL/min/kg. After intramuscular administration of buprenorphine at the same dosage, bioavailability was complete and clearance was 54.7+/-16.6 mL/min/kg. Heart rate, blood pressure and concentrations of cortisol and vasopressin in plasma increased after drug administration. The goats became agitated and stopped ruminating. The effects were more pronounced the first time the animals received the drug, especially the influence on the hormone levels. The concentrations of cortisol and vasopressin in plasma remained unaffected after the second dose despite a wash-out period of 3-6 weeks. Buprenorphine may be an unsuitable drug in goats because of the profound inhibition of rumination and the agitation it causes. The short half-life of buprenorphine may limit its use if long-term analgesia is required but be advantageous if a short acting drug is desirable.  相似文献

Effect of Fasciola gigantica infection on adrenal and thyroid glands was investigated using eight male, yearling Murrah buffaloes. The animals were randomly assigned to two groups of four buffaloes each (Group-A, infected; Group-B, non-infected control). Animals of Group-A were orally infected with 1000 F. gigantica viable metacercariae, keeping other four animals of Group-B as uninfected control. In the infected buffaloes, the clinical signs began appearing from 7th week postinfection (p.i.) and eggs were detected in the faeces between day 93 and 99 (95.5+/-1.25) postinfection (p.i.). The serum cortisol level, revealed a significant (P<0.05) rise during initial stage of the infection, followed by a continuous fall from 12th week onward. Peak cortisol level on 10th week (13.30+/-2.57ngml(-1)) was associated with eosinophilia (11.0+/-0.95%). However, non-infected controls maintained almost uniform cortisol levels (3.97+/-0.15-5.88+/-0.09ngml(-1)) throughout the period of the study. The pathological changes of adrenal glands were correlated with physiological dysfunction of the glands. The levels of T(3) and T(4) were significantly (P<0.05-0.01) low from 14th week onward and were synchronous with in situ migration, growth and development of F. gigantica. Significant reduction in the thyroid hormones was further supported by histopathological evidence of lymphocytic thyroiditis confirming hypothyroidism. A decrease in Hb, PCV, total erythrocyte counts and appearance of reticulocytes in the blood of the infected buffaloes suggested regenerative anemia, which could partly be due to hypothyroidism.  相似文献

Tuberculosis in goats caused by Mycobacterium bovis and Mycobacterium caprae has noteworthy sanitary and economic implications. Current diagnostic assays are based on cellular immunity and although they have demonstrated a high sensitivity, some animals remain undetected. In the present study, flow cytometry has been used to determine changes in CD4+, CD8+ and CD25+ T cell populations in peripheral blood from naturally infected goats. Proportion of lymphocytes producing PPD-specific interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) was calculated and an ELISA for detection of PPD-specific IFN-γ was performed to measure the cytokine in plasma. The infected goats showed percentages of CD4+ T cells between 27.31% and 47.23% and there were not significant differences (p=0.113) with the non-infected control goats although the mean percentage was lower in this group. Regarding CD8+ T cells, a higher percentage was observed in healthy goats compared to controls (p=0.081). The mean percentage of lymphocytes expressing CD25 without antigen stimulation (30.65±3.91) was higher in lesion and/or culture-positive animals than in the controls (21.84±1.21; p=0.053). The percentage of CD4+/IFN+ T cell population stimulated with bovine PPD was a reliable marker of infection, since the mean percentage in the infected goats was significantly higher than in the controls (p<0.05). Tuberculosis in goats caused by M. caprae induced changes in cellular populations similar to those described for M. bovis in cattle.  相似文献

Unbound or free cortisol constitutes a small fraction of total plasma cortisol, but is believed to represent the biologically active portion of this circulating glucocorticoid. We tested the hypothesis that the percentage free cortisol was altered in plasma from dogs with hyperadrenocorticism, which could account for a greater target tissue response to this circulating hormone. The percentage free cortisol in plasma samples from human beings, healthy dogs, and dogs with hyperadrenocorticism was estimated, using centrifugal ultrafiltration-dialysis. Total cortisol concentrations were determined by use of radioimmunoassay. Total cortisol concentrations appeared greater in plasma from human beings than in plasma from either group of dogs. However, the percentage free cortisol was lower in plasma from human beings, resulting in a calculated concentration of free cortisol that was quite similar between plasma from human beings and healthy dogs. Total plasma cortisol concentrations were greater (P less than 0.01) in samples from dogs with hyperadrenocorticism (190 +/- 113 nmol/L; mean +/- SD) than in healthy dogs (102 +/- 85 nmol/L), but the percentage free cortisol was not different between these 2 groups (dogs with hyperadrenocorticism, 16 +/- 9%; healthy dogs, 13 +/- 6%). However, plasma free cortisol concentrations (product of total and the percentage of free cortisol) were greater (P less than 0.01) in samples from dogs with hyperadrenocorticism (36 +/- 41 nmol/L) than in those from healthy dogs (16 +/- 9 nmol/L). Significant (P less than 0.001) positive linear relationships were found between total cortisol concentrations and percentage free cortisol in plasma samples from healthy dogs and dogs with hyperadrenocorticism.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Plasma thyroxine (T4), 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine (T3), total protein, and albumin concentrations were measured in 15 dogs both before and after completion, and in an additional 16 dogs before and 24 dogs after completion, of a long-distance sled dog race. The plasma T4 concentration (mean +/- SD) decreased significantly from 18.2 +/- 5.4 nmol/L before to 14.3 +/- 3.5 nmol/L after the race in dogs evaluated at both times and decreased significantly from 21.8 +/- 10.5 nmol/L before to 15.8 +/- 4.9 nmol/L after the race in dogs sampled only before or only after the race. The mean plasma T3 concentrations in dogs measured twice decreased significantly from 1.20 +/- 0.48 nmol/L before to 0.74 +/- 0.42 nmol/L after the race, as well as in dogs measured either before (1.28 +/- 0.36 nmol/L) or after (0.69 +/- 0.28 nmol/L) the race, respectively. Plasma total protein and albumin concentrations decreased significantly after completion of the race. No significant change was noted in 4 control dogs that did not compete in the race and were tested during a similar time period. The plasma concentrations of T4 and T3 were lower than the normal reference range established for this laboratory in 23 and 39%, respectively, of Alaskan sled dogs tested before the race. Plasma thyroid hormone concentrations frequently are below normal in conditioned Alaskan sled dogs and are further reduced after prolonged submaximal exercise.  相似文献

It has been shown in various species that the onset of puberty is closely associated with body growth and nutritional state rather than age. The present study was conducted to determine the timing of puberty and to clarify body growth and metabolic changes around the pubertal period in female Shiba goats. Blood samples were collected between 10 to 38 weeks of age from 12 female goats, and plasma concentrations of progesterone, metabolites (glucose, nonesterified fatty acid, ketone body and acetic acid) and metabolic hormones (insulin and insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I)) were analyzed. Physical parameters (body weight, withers height and body length) were also measured at the blood sampling. The week when plasma progesterone concentrations first exceeded 1.0 ng/ml was designated as the onset of puberty. The results showed that the average age of the onset of puberty was 27.0 +/- 0.9 (mean +/- SEM) weeks in female Shiba goats. When the goats reached puberty, the average values of body weight and goat body mass index ((body weight (kg)/withers height (cm)/body length (cm)) x 10(3)) were 12.2 +/- 0.5 kg and 5.7 +/- 0.2, respectively. No particular change associated with puberty was apparent for plasma concentrations of the metabolites examined. Plasma insulin concentrations were maintained at lower levels until the onset of puberty, and then they began to gradually increase. Plasma IGF-I concentrations began to gradually increase 1 to 4 weeks before the onset of puberty and this increase continued throughout the peripubertal period. These results imply that IGF-I acts as a peripheral nutritional signal to trigger the onset of puberty in Shiba goats.  相似文献

Effects of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) on plasma concentrations of thyroid hormones, and effects of ACTH and dexamethasone on plasma concentrations of cortisol, were studied in adult male ferrets. Thirteen ferrets were randomly assigned to test or control groups of eight and five animals, respectively. Combined (test + control groups) mean basal plasma thyroxine (T4) values were different between the TRH (1.81 +/- 0.41 micrograms/dl, mean +/- SD) and TSH (2.69 +/- 0.87 micrograms/dl) experiments, which were performed 2 months apart. Plasma T4 values significantly (P less than 0.05) increased as early as 2 hours (3.37 +/- 1.10 micrograms/dl) and remained high until 6 hours (3.45 +/- 0.86 micrograms/dl) after IV injection of 1 IU of TSH/ferret. In contrast, IV injection of 500 micrograms of TRH/ferret did not induce a significant increase until 6 hours (2.75 +/- 0.79) after injection, and induced side effects of hyperventilation, salivation, vomiting, and sedation. There was no significant increase in triiodothyronine (T3) values following TSH or TRH administration. Combined mean basal plasma cortisol values were not significantly different between ACTH stimulation (1.29 +/- 0.84 micrograms/dl) and dexamethasone suppression test (0.74 +/- 0.56 micrograms/dl) experiments. Intravenous injection of 0.5 IU of ACTH/ferret induced a significant increase in plasma cortisol concentrations by 30 minutes (5.26 +/- 1.21 micrograms/dl), which persisted until 60 minutes (5.17 +/- 1.99 micrograms/dl) after injection. Plasma cortisol values significantly decreased as early as 1 hour (0.41 +/- 0.13 micrograms/dl), and had further decreased by 5 hours (0.26 +/- 0.15 micrograms/dl) following IV injection of 0.2 mg of dexamethasone/ferret.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Weight gain costs due to infection were higher in sheep than goats, 28 and 17.5%, respectively, for Trichostrongylus colubriformis and 48.7 and 32.2%, respectively, for Haemonchus contortus. The extent of bodyweight cost attributed to anorexia in sheep infected with H. contortus was higher (13.5 g/day) than in sheep infected with T. colubriformis (2.3 g/day). On the other hand, bodyweight cost due to the other pathogenic effects in sheep infected with T. colubriformis were higher (35.6 g/day) compared to sheep infected with H. contortus (10.9 g/day). A strong relationship between faecal egg count and worm count (r=0.79, P=0.006) was shown only in sheep infected with T. colubriformis. About half of the infected sheep and goats had low or zero faecal egg counts throughout the study. In about 40% the egg count rose initially but became low by weeks 10-16, whereas in about 10% counts increased progressively throughout the period of observation and these animals also had the highest numbers of worms at slaughter. Packed cell volume was reduced in sheep and goats infected with H. contortus but serum protein and haemoglobin levels were unaffected. Sheep infected with T. colubriformis had a higher level of eosinophilia after 8 weeks (18.4%) than sheep infected with H. contortus (11.4%), whereas this pattern was reversed in goats and levels were also lower (4.1 and 8.9%, respectively). There was no apparent relationship between eosinophilia and resistance to infection with H. contortus or T. colubriformis.  相似文献

Goat production is increasing in the United States due to high ethnic demand, but infection with gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) parasites is a major constraint to the industry. Increasing GIN resistance to chemical anthelmintics worldwide has led to the development of alternative control strategies, including use of forages containing condensed tannins (CT). An experiment was designed using infected and dewormed male kids (Kiko x Spanish, 6 mo old, 18.9 +/- 3.25 kg) fed diets containing 25% concentrate and either 75% sericea lespedeza [SL; Lespedeza cuneata (Dum-Cours.) G. Don], a high CT forage (87 to 181 g of CT/kg), or 75% bermudagrass [BG; Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.] hay (n = 10/treatment). The kids were weighed every 14 d, and fecal and blood samples were taken weekly for fecal egg counts and packed cell volume determination, respectively. Fecal cultures were processed every 14 d to determine CT effect on larval development. At slaughter, adult GIN were collected from the abomasum and small intestines for counting and speciation. Blood samples were also analyzed for plasma urea-N, and ruminal VFA and pH were determined. The infected SL-fed kids had consistently lower (P < 0.05) fecal egg counts than the infected BG goats throughout the trial and greater (P < 0.05) packed cell volume beginning by d 77. Average daily gain was greater (P < 0.001) in kids fed SL- than BG-based diets, regardless of infection status (104.3 +/- 5.0 and 75.5 +/- 4.8 g/d, respectively). Total VFA and acetate concentrations were greater (P < 0.001) in the BG- than in SL-fed goats, whereas propionate levels were unaffected by diet. Acetate:propionate ratio (P = 0.01) and plasma urea-N (P = 0.03) levels were greater in BG-fed goats, whereas rumen pH was greater (P < 0.001) in the SL-fed goats. Feeding SL hay can reduce GIN infection levels and increase performance of goats compared with BG hay.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of medetomidine and its antagonism with atipamezole in goats. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective randomized crossover study with 1 week between treatments. ANIMALS: Six healthy 3-year-old neutered goats (three male and three female) weighing 39.1-90.9 kg (60.0 +/- 18 kg, mean +/- SD). METHODS: Goats were given medetomidine (20 microg kg(-1), IV) followed, 25 minutes later, by either atipamezole (100 microg kg(-1), IV) or saline. Heart and respiratory rate, rectal temperature, indirect blood pressure, and mechanical threshold were measured, and sedation and posture were scored and blood samples obtained to measure epinephrine, norepinephrine, free fatty acids, glucose, and cortisol concentrations at baseline (immediately before medetomidine), 5 and 25 minutes after medetomidine administration, and at 5, 30, 60, and 120 minutes after the administration of antagonist or saline. Parametric and nonparametric tests were used to evaluate data; p < 0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: Medetomidine decreased body temperature, heart rate, and respiratory rate and increased mean arterial blood pressure, cortisol, and glucose. Recumbency occurred 89 +/- 50 seconds after medetomidine administration. All goats were standing 86 +/- 24 seconds after atipamezole administration whereas all goats administered saline were sedate and recumbent at 2 hours. Tolerance to compression of the withers and metacarpus increased with medetomidine. From 5 to 120 minutes after saline or atipamezole administration, there were differences in body temperature, glucose, and cortisol but none in heart rate or blood pressure. Three of the six goats receiving saline developed bloat; five of six urinated. After atipamezole, four of six goats developed piloerection and all goats were agitated and vocalized. CONCLUSION: At the doses used, atipamezole antagonized the effects of medetomidine on recumbency, sedation, mechanical threshold, and the increase in glucose. Atipamezole increased the rate of return of cortisol toward baseline, and prevented further decline in rectal body temperature. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Atipamezole may be used to antagonize some, but not all effects of medetomidine.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate plasma concentrations of substance P (SP) and cortisol in calves after castration or simulated castration. ANIMALS: 10 Angus-crossbred calves. PROCEDURES: Calves were acclimated for 5 days, assigned to a block on the basis of scrotal circumference, and randomly assigned to a castrated or simulated-castrated (control) group. Blood samples were collected twice before, at the time of (0 hours), and at several times points after castration or simulated castration. Vocalization and attitude scores were determined at time of castration or simulated castration. Plasma concentrations of SP and cortisol were determined by use of competitive and chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassays, respectively. Data were analyzed by use of repeated-measures analysis with a mixed model. RESULTS: Mean +/- SEM cortisol concentration in castrated calves (78.88+/-10.07 nmol/L) was similar to that in uncastrated control calves (73.01+/-10.07 nmol/L). However, mean SP concentration in castrated calves (506.43+/-38.11 pg/mL) was significantly higher than the concentration in control calves (386.42+/-40.09 pg/mL). Mean cortisol concentration in calves with vocalization scores of 0 was not significantly different from the concentration in calves with vocalization scores of 3. However, calves with vocalization scores of 3 had significantly higher SP concentrations, compared with SP concentrations for calves with vocalization scores of 0. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Similar cortisol concentrations were measured in castrated and control calves. A significant increase in plasma concentrations of SP after castration suggested a likely association with nociception. These results may affect assessment of animal well-being in livestock production systems.  相似文献

The effects of two putative stressors relative to the collection of blood, namely the environment of the treatment room and the pain associated with venepuncture, on plasma levels of luteinising hormone (LH), testosterone and cortisol were examined in six trained male experimental dogs. Blood samples were collected from the dogs in a treatment room as well as in the kennels (control), and by venepuncture as well as via an indwelling intravenous catheter (control). No significant influence of either stressor on plasma levels of LH, testosterone or cortisol was found. Plasma concentrations of these hormones varied considerably both between and within dogs. Mean (+/- SEM; n = 6) plasma concentrations were 4.3 +/- 1.0 micrograms/l for LH, 4.6 +/- 1.9 nmol/l for testosterone and 68 +/- 10 nmol/l for cortisol. It was concluded that the putative stressors, the environment of the treatment room and the pain associated with venepuncture, did not significantly influence plasma levels of LH, testosterone or cortisol in trained male experimental dogs. This conclusion implies that under the experimental conditions described, the validity of results will not be affected by the method of blood collection used.  相似文献
