Development of wheat cultivars that achieve high yields despite the short growing season is essential for increasing wheat production in southwestern Japan. The objectives of this study were to assess the genetic progress in grain yield and to clarify yield-attributing traits of high-yielding wheat lines in southwestern Japan. We conducted field experiments for two growing seasons (2012–2013 and 2013–2014) using three commercial wheat cultivars (Shiroganekomugi, Chikugoizumi, and Iwainodaichi) and four high-yielding wheat lines including Hakei W1380 developed in southwestern Japan. In an ancillary field experiment, we compared a commercial cultivar, Shiroganekomugi, and a high-yielding line, Hakei W1380, in the 2014–2015 season. Across the two seasons, grain yield of high-yielding lines was generally higher than commercial cultivars. Hakei W1380 achieved the highest grain yield across the two seasons, and successfully produced more than 900 g m?2 in the 2013–2014 season. Correlation analysis showed that recent yield progress of wheat lines in southwestern Japan was derived from enhanced biomass production and grain number m?2. Larger numbers of grains m?2 in high-yielding lines than in commercial cultivars were associated with higher crop growth rate at the pre-anthesis stage, and therefore higher spike dry weight m?2 at anthesis. Genotypic differences in crop growth rate from jointing to anthesis resulted mainly from differences in leaf area index. These results indicate that further improvements in grain yield in southwestern Japan could be achieved by increasing the amount of radiation intercepted at the pre-anthesis stage and grain number m?2.  相似文献

Berseem clover (Trifolium alexandrinum L.) was sown as an intercrop with oats (Avena sativa L.) at 0, 30, 60, 90 and 240 oats plants m?2 in May in 1999 and 2000 in Alberta, Canada. Forage yield and quality were measured at 10‐d intervals between 35 and 88 d after planting (DAP). Yield is defined as the biomass above 6 cm of the soil surface. The dry‐matter (DM) yield of berseem clover in sole crops increased by 5–10 g m?2 d?1 between 35 and 55 DAP and then increased by 21–28 g m?2 d?1 between 55 and 75 DAP. The DM yields of oats sown at 240 plants m?2 increased by 26–28 g m?2 d?1 over the whole period from 35 to 75 DAP. Oats were the dominant component in the intercrops, even at low densities of oats. Berseem clover grown with 60 oats plants m?2 received only 0·24 of the incident light when shading by oats peaked at 65 DAP. DM yields of berseem clover in intercrops with 60 oats plants m?2 averaged 0·14–0·32 of the yields of berseem clover sole crops. Between 35 and 88 DAP in 2000, the crude protein (CP) concentration of berseem clover sole crops declined linearly from 310 to 180 g kg?1 DM, and the CP concentration of oats exhibited a quadratic response, declining from 350 g kg?1 DM at tillering to 110 g kg?1 DM at the soft dough stage. The mean CP concentration of berseem clover in intercrops with 60 oats plants m?2 was 25 g kg?1 less than in berseem clover sole crops, indicating that competition by oats reduced the CP concentration of berseem clover. At later sampling dates, CP and DM yields of intercrops with oats at 60 plants m?2 equalled those with oats at 240 plants m?2. The addition of berseem clover to oats in intercrops at 60 oats plants m?2 reduced the neutral‐detergent fibre concentration by 30 g kg?1 DM compared with oats alone. Oats were very competitive as a companion crop for berseem clover. Adding berseem clover to oats increased forage quality and may provide for increased intake and digestibility of forage to support higher livestock productivity.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) applications can have a significant effect on soil N availability. The effect of 3 years of N fertilization on soil net N mineralization during the growing season (May–September) was studied in 2005 and 2006 in grassland of northern China. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with four replications of five rates of N addition as urea (0, 2, 4, 8 and 16 g N m?2 year?1). Results indicated that net N mineralization rate varied seasonally and between years, ranging from ?0.04 to 0.52 μg g?1 d?1 in 2005 and from ?0.09 to 0.39 μg g?1 d?1 in 2006. Mean N mineralization and nitrification rates were highest in July, in 2005 and 2006, whereas highest ammonification rates occurred in September. Rainfall was significantly correlated with net nitrification. In comparison with the untreated control, N mineralization increased sharply when N fertilization increased from 2 to 8 g N m?2 year?1. Mobile soil NO3? accumulated late in the growing season for the 16 g N m?2 year?1 treatment, suggesting the potential for NO3 and associated cation leaching. These results suggest that N fertilization of 8 g N m?2 year?1 (80 kg N ha?1) is suitable for the management of grassland ecosystems of Inner Mongolia.  相似文献

Abstract

Water chestnut is an aquatic annual herb, and its fresh, edible fruit is a valuable crop. The huge variation in growth and yield of water chestnuts has not been well documented. In this study, the yield performance of 17 water chestnut lines, eight from China (Trapa acornis L., T. bicornis L., T. bispinosa Roxb, T. quadrispinosa Roxb), one from France (T. natans L.), one from India (T. bispinosa Roxb.), three from Italy (T. natans L.), three from Japanese (T. incisa L., T. japonica Flerov, T. natans.L. var. rubeola Makino), and one from Korean (T. japonica Flerov.) were cultivated in Saga City, Japan during the summer, 2005, and the morphological characters of their fruit were analyzed. European lines were early flowering, but had a lower yield due to poor canopy density and lower rosette density. All the Asian lines had a higher rosette density. In spite of the smaller number of fruits per rosette, the Chinese lines had a higher yield than the other lines because the fruit was larger. The yield performance of the Indian line was similar to that of the Chinese lines. The Korean and Japanese lines produced a large number of small fruits per unit land area. Apart from the variation in fruit size, a huge variation in shape including the height, width and the spines were observed. Path analysis revealed that productive rosette number m-2 and the single fresh fruit weight are two direct yield determinants while number of fruits per rosette has indirect negative influence on yield via productive rosette number and single fruit weight.  相似文献

To examine whether the critical leaf N/P ratios (of 14, 16) are valid to test nutrient limitation in the context of semi‐arid sandy grasslands, an experiment was conducted on a Keerqin sandy grassland in North‐east China to investigate the responses of plant biomass and nutrient concentrations to fertilization. Plant biomass production and leaf nutrient concentrations were measured after five consecutive years of fertilization with N (20 g N m?2 year?1) and/or P (10 g P2O5 m?2 year?1). Nitrogen fertilization increased the shoot biomass by twofold and consequently the shoot/root ratio, whereas P fertilization had little effect on either shoot biomass or shoot/root ratio. Leaf N/P ratio varied among species with an average of 5·6 in the control, while the mean leaf N/P ratio (7·5) under the N fertilization treatment remained below the threshold of 14. Our results suggest that the critical N/P ratio (14, 16) is not applicable as a test for nutrient limitations in the context of semi‐arid, sandy grassland.  相似文献

Early planting contributed to increased soybean yields in the U.S. Because a double-cropping system dominates in southwestern Japan, early planting is not performed; it is thus unclear how much the yield potential could be increased by early planting. To address this question, we planted seven U.S. and five Japanese cultivars on around 20 May (early planting), measured the agronomic traits, including yield, yield components, and oil and protein contents, and compared these traits with those of the same cultivars planted on around 20 July (normal planting). In the early planting, the yields of the U.S. cultivars were 322–453 g m?2, whereas the highest yield among the Japanese cultivars was only 315 g m?2, which is significantly lower than those of the top five U.S. cultivars, indicating the adaptability of U.S. cultivars to early planting. The increases in yield obtained with early planting were 99–199 g m?2 and ?26–144 g m?2 for the U.S. and Japanese cultivars, respectively. The yield obtained by early planting was positively correlated with the pods m?2, seeds pod?1, and oil contents, but negatively correlated with the sterile pod rate, 100 seed weight and protein content. In the early planting, the U.S. cultivars had greater pods m?2, seeds pod?1 and oil content and less sterile pod rate, 100-seed weight, and protein content than the Japanese cultivars. These results suggest that early planting can increase the yield in southwestern Japan, if cultivars with agronomic traits observed in the U.S. cultivars of this study are grown.  相似文献

To compare N uptake and use efficiency of rice among different environments and quantify the contributions of indigenous soil and applied N to N uptake and use efficiency, field experiments were conducted in five sites in five provinces of China in 2012 and 2013. Four cultivars were grown under three N treatments in each site. Average total N uptake was 10–12 g m?2 in Huaiji, Binyang, and Haikou, 20 g m?2 in Changsha, and 23 g m?2 in Xingyi. Rice crops took up 54.6–61.7% of total plant N from soil in Huaiji, Binyang, and Haikou, 64.3% in Changsha, and 63.5% in Xingyi. Partial factor productivity of applied N and recovery efficiency of applied N in Changsha were higher than in Huaiji, Binyang, and Haikou, but were lower than in Xingyi. Physiological efficiency of soil N and fertilizer N were lower in Changsha than in Huaiji, Binyang, and Haikou, while the difference in them between Changsha and Xingyi were small or inconsistent. Average grain yields were 6.5–7.5 t ha?1 (medium yield) in Huaiji, Binyang, and Haikou, 9.0 t ha?1 (high yield) in Changsha, and 12.0 t ha?1 (super high yield) in Xingyi. Our results suggest that both indigenous soil and applied N were key factors for improving rice yield from medium to high level, while a further improvement to super high yield indigenous soil N was more important than fertilizer N, and a simultaneous increasing grain yield and N use efficiency can be achieved using SPAD-based practice in rice production.  相似文献

In reproductive swards, stems appear to act as vertical or horizontal barriers to bite formation, influencing instantaneous intake rate (IIR). The hypothesis was tested that the stems’ barrier effect is determined by the physical properties and density of stems. Artificial microswards, consisting of 20‐cm leaves and 15‐cm stems of Panicum maximum, were offered to three steers (362 kg) in a factorial combination of three stem densities (0, 100 and 400 stems m?2) and two levels of stem tensile resistance [low (LTRS) and high tensile‐resisting stems (HTRS)]. LTRS were not a barrier to defoliation and did not affect bite depth and bite mass. HTRS acted as both a horizontal barrier and a vertical barrier depressing bite depth (13·4, 13·6 and 5·1 cm for 0, 100 and 400 stems m?2, respectively), bite area (89·3, 50·8 and 47·6 cm2 for 0, 100 and 400 stems m?2, respectively), bite mass (0·51, 0·29 and 0·11 g for 0, 100 and 400 stems m?2, respectively) and IIR (23·8, 10·5 and 3·6 g sec?2 for 0, 100 and 400 stems m?2, respectively). The results confirmed the importance of the density and physical properties of stems as determinants of the stems’ barrier effect on bite dimensions and IIR.  相似文献

The rates of drying of perennial ryegrass, subjected to different treatments at mowing and after mowing, were assessed in the field by weight change of grass fresh weight in wire-mesh trays over 3·5 d (76 h). In a 5 × 3 × 3 factorial experimental design, the effects of five weights of grass per unit area [1·5, 3, 6, 12 and 24 kg fresh material (FM) m?2], three treatments at mowing (no treatment, mower-conditioned, flail-treated) and three treatments after mowing (no treatment, inverted, mixed) were examined. The experiment was replicated twice on 16 occasions in 1992 at the Agricultural Research Institute of Northern Ireland. This gave a total of thirty-two replicates per treatment. The trays were weighed at 2-h intervals from 09.00 to 17.00 h each day. Data sets were restricted to rain-free days and also to the first day after mowing (day 1). On day 1, grass weight per unit area was a major factor dictating drying; reducing the grass weight per unit area of unconditioned grass from 6 to 3 kg FM m?2 increased grass drying rate by 47%. There was no significant (P > 0·05) benefit over the untreated grass on day 1 from mixing or turning mower-conditioned or the unconditioned grass. Mixing of the flail-treated grass improved drying rate significantly (P > 0·001) over the control. Over the whole 76-h period, the relative benefit from either mower conditioning or flail treatment over no treatment was dependent upon both grass weight per unit area and initial dry-matter (DM) concentration. At higher initial DM concentrations (>150 g kg?1) and lower grass weights (<6 kg FM m?2) both mower conditioning using a nylon brush type conditioner and intensive conditioning by flail treatment gave substantial increases in drying over no treatment. Moisture regain of grass exposed to overnight dew was small. Rain had a much greater effect than dew on subsequent moisture regain. Unconditioned grass at 12 kg m?2 retained 82% less water following rainfall than unconditioned grass at 3 kg m?2.  相似文献

Soil types and fertilizer regimes were evaluated on growth, yield, and quality of Amaranthus tricolor lines, IB (India Bengal), TW (Taiwan), BB (Bangladesh B), and BC (Bangladesh C) in developing management practices in Okinawa. Growth and yield of all amaranth lines were higher in gray soil (pH 8.4) than in dark red soil (pH 6.6) and red soil (pH 5.4). The combined NPK fertilizer resulted in highest growth parameters and yield of amaranths in all soils. Nitrogen fertilizer alone did not affect growth parameters and yield of amaranths in dark red and red soils. Growth parameters and yield increased similarly with the 30, 40, and 50 g m?2 of NPK fertilizer in BB line, and with the 20, 30, 40, and 50 g m?2 in BC line. Agronomic efficiency of NPK fertilizer at 50 g m?2 was not prominent on the amaranths, compared to the fertilizer at 40 g m?2. Amaranth lines had higher Na in dark red and red soils, while K and Mg in gray soil, Ca in gray and red soils, and Fe in dark red soil. The NPK fertilizer resulted in higher Na, Ca, Mg, and P in BB line in glasshouse. These minerals in BB line were not clearly affected, but in BC line were lower with NPK fertilizer at 20–50 g m?2 in field. These studies indicate that gray soil is best for amaranth cultivation and combined NPK fertilizer at 20–40 g m?2 is effective in gray soil in Okinawa for higher yield and minerals of amaranth.  相似文献

Pasture legumes are important components of both mixed farming rotations and permanent pastures in temperate climates. Breeding of two widely sown pasture legumes, subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum L.) and French serradella (Ornithopus sativus Brot.), is constrained by the long generation cycle, typically enabling only one generation per year. We hypothesized manipulation of culture medium and conditions would enable the development of a laboratory‐based protocol for in vitro reproduction in subterranean clover and French serradella. In vitro flowering and viable seed set was induced from both species. For subterranean clover, the most effective treatment was culturing on modified MS medium with 1 μm kinetin and 0·1 m sucrose under a 100 μmol m?2 s?1 light intensity and continuous photoperiod. For French serradella, culture on a hormone‐free B5 medium with 5 mm NH4Cl and 0·1 m sucrose under a 100 μmol m?2 s?1 light intensity and 20 h photoperiod was optimum. It is expected this technique will have application in accelerating generation turnover within breeding programs, for the study of factors influencing flowering in pasture legumes, and for the propagation of valuable yet enfeebled plants such as embryo‐rescued hybrids.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of poultry manure (PM) on the occurrence and early growth of Monochoria vaginalis in relation to soil solution electrical conductivity (SSEC). PM was applied at rates corresponding to 0 g of nitrogen (N) m?2 (PM-0), 1 g N m?2 (PM-1), 3 g N m?2 (PM-3), and 5 g N m?2 (PM-5). At 7 d post-seeding, the soil solution was sampled to measure EC, and also the emergence and growth of M. vaginalis were evaluated. The emergence rate of M. vaginalis decreased with increasing application rate of PM and SSEC. SSEC was significantly negatively correlated with the emergence rate of M. vaginalis seedlings. The average leaf number and length of M. vaginalis did not differ between PM-0, PM-1, and PM-3, but were significantly lower in PM-5. In summary, PM would allow to better control the emergence and early growth of M. vaginalis.  相似文献

Results for years 4–8 of a long-term grazing experiment on swards of a diploid perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne), var. Contender (D swards), a tetraploid ryegrass, var. Condesa (T swards) and Condesa with S184 white clover (Trifolium repens) (TC swards), direct sown in May 1987, are presented. The swards were continuously stocked with sheep from 1988 to 1990, as previously reported, and for a further 5 years, 1991–95, at a target sward surface height (SSH) of 4–6 cm. Control of sward height was successfully achieved by variable stocking, except in 1993 when paddocks were set stocked and the resulting mean SSH was 9·3 cm. Grass swards received on average 160 kg N ha?1 year?1; grass/clover swards were mainly not fertilized with N with the exception that they were given 30 kg N ha?1 as a remedial mid-summer application during a period of low herbage mass on offer in 1994 and 1995. Mean white clover content of the swards fell from 18·2% of herbage dry-matter (DM) in 1992 to 8·5% in 1993, whereas stolon lengths fell from 120 to 58 m m?2. A return to lower sward heights in 1994–95 resulted in an increase in white clover content to 12·8% by the final sampling in August 1995. Perennial ryegrass content of the grass swards remained high throughout (mean 96·7% in 1995). Perennial ryegrass tiller densities recorded in August 1991, 1993 and 1994 showed consistently significant (P < 0·001) sward differences (3-year mean 16 600, 13 700 and 10 100 perennial ryegrass tillers m?2 for the D, T and TC swards). In 1994, the year after lax grazing, a low perennial ryegrass tiller density (9100 m?2) and low white clover content (mean 4·3%) in the TC swards resulted in a much lower herbage bulk density than in the grass swards (April–July means 72, 94 and 44 kg OM ha?1 cm?1 for the D, T and TC swards). There was a consistent 40 g d?1 increase in lamb liveweight gain on the TC swards over the T swards, except in 1994. In that year there was a reduction in lamb liveweight gain of 33 g d?1 on the TC swards and a significant increase in ewe liveweight loss (117 g d?1) associated with low herbage bulk density despite optimal sward height. Lamb output (kg liveweight ha?1) on TC swards reflected white clover content, falling from a similar output to that produced from grass given 160 kg N ha?1, at 18% white clover DM content, down to 60% of grass + N swards with around 5% clover. A 6% greater output from the T than the D swards was achieved mainly through higher stocking rate. The experiment demonstrated a rapid, loss in white clover under lax grazing, and showed that the relationship between performance and sward height is also dependent on herbage density. High lamb output from a grass/clover sward was only achieved when the clover content was maintained at 15–20% of the herbage DM.  相似文献

The aims of this study were to examine the effect of three grazing treatments (year‐round stocking rates of 0·8 ewes ha?1, 0·5 ewes ha?1 and 0·5 ewes ha?1 plus grazing cattle in summer), imposed for 4 years, on the herbage mass and surface height of a Nardus stricta‐dominated grassland in western Scotland and to obtain estimates of annual productivity of this grassland. Nardus stricta‐dominated grassland comprised proportionately 0·20 of the grazing area. Stocking rate of sheep had no significant effect on the herbage mass of the grassland in the first 2 years of the experiment, although mean summer pasture heights were significantly higher under the lower stocking rate of sheep. The pasture on the treatment with cattle grazing in summer had a significantly lower herbage mass and lower surface height than the two sheep‐only grazing treatments. Year‐to‐year variation in the herbage mass and surface height of herbage in summer was greater than the effect of treatments. Despite changes in surface height, the structural diversity of the grasslands was not increased by the treatments. The annual production of vascular plant material ranged from 417 g DM m?2 in 1994 to 628 g DM m?2 in 1996.  相似文献

Soybeans planted in early to mid-June (early) are less affected by rainfall during rainy season than those conventionally planted in early to mid-July in southwestern Japan. Also, narrow row cultivation is expected to increase soybean yield and save labor for inter-tillage and ridging. Field experiments were performed in 2014 and 2015 to test the effect of plant density (high, middle, and low) under early planting condition on growth, yield, and several agronomical traits of Sachiyutaka A1 and three new genotypes (Sakukei 155, Kanto 127 and Shikoku 15). Early planting was performed in mid- to late June, even though rainy season started in early June. Higher plant densities produced 13% greater yield than low plant density through an increase in biomass accumulation, especially at R5. Among yield components, only pods m?2 was significantly and positively correlated with yield, indicating that an increase in pods m?2 led to a greater yield with higher plant densities. The yields of Sachiyutaka A1 were relatively stable for two years, but the lodging resistance should be further improved. Shikoku 15 had greater yield potential and lodging resistance, but its resistance to damping-off disease should be improved. Sakukei 155 with medium plant density produced relatively high and stable yield with less lodging. Although the yield of Kanto 127 fluctuated between experimental years, this genotype showed higher yield potential in higher plant densities with less lodging in 2015. Thus, Sakukei 155 and Kanto 127 with high or medium density may be suitable for early planting in this region.  相似文献

The rates of drying of herbage, cut from perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) – dominant swards and subjected to different treatments, were investigated under field conditions by changes in weight of herbage in wire mesh trays in 1995 and 1996. A series of replicated factorial experiments studied the effects, in different combinations, of intensity of conditioning achieved by passing the cut herbage through a laboratory‐scale macerator zero (0C), once (1C), three (3C) or six (6C) times; weight of herbage per unit area equivalent to 450, 675 and 900 g dry matter (DM) m?2. In one experiment, pressing the herbage to form a mat was incorporated into the experimental design. A further experiment investigated the effect of varying the proportion of conditioned herbage in the herbage mass from 0·00, 0·25, 0·50, 0·75 and 1·00 on drying rate. On each occasion the trays plus herbage were weighed at hourly intervals over an ≈6‐h period and the DM content of the herbage estimated from the change in weight. On all occasions, conditioning and weight of herbage per unit area significantly (P < 0·001) influenced herbage drying rate. Lowering the weight per unit area of both unconditioned and conditioned herbage increased the rate of moisture loss. Unconditioned herbage at the equivalent of a herbage mass of 450 g DM m?2 had a total moisture loss that was on average 1·5–1·8 times greater than unconditioned herbage at the equivalent of a herbage mass of 900 g DM m?2. Similarly, conditioned herbage at the equivalent of a herbage mass of 450 g DM m?2 had a total moisture loss that was 1·8–2·3 times greater than unconditioned herbage at the equivalent of a herbage mass of 900 g DM m?2. Increasing the level of conditioning produced a non‐linear response in rate of moisture loss, consequently 3 passes through the macerator produced >0·95 of the total moisture loss that was produced by 6 passes through the macerator. Increasing the proportion of conditioned herbage in the herbage mass increased rate of moisture loss and consequently final DM content (P < 0·001) although there was little effect from increasing the proportion of conditioned herbage above 0·75. The effects of conditioning and weight of herbage per unit area treatments on total nitrogen , water‐soluble carbohydrate and acid‐detergent fibre concentration of the herbage were small.  相似文献

Leymus chinensis is an important grass in China and Russia. Six lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains (LB, LPL1, LPL2, LPL3, LCL and WH) from L. chinensis silage were screened and identified and their effects on fermentation quality were investigated. All six strains were grown at 6·5% NaCl and pH 4·00. Strains LPL1, LPL2 and LPL3 were identified as Lactobacillus plantarum, and LB, WH and LCL were classified as Lactobacillus brevis, Weissella hellenica and Lactobacillus casei respectively. The six isolated strains and a commercial inoculant (Lactobacillus buchneri) were added to L. chinensis for ensiling at densities of 500 and 600 kg m?3. The control was sprayed with the same volume of distilled water. The effects of the strains on fermentation quality after 45 d ensiling and aerobic stability during 8 d of exposure to air were evaluated. The 600 kg m?3 silage had lower pH, butyric acid, ammonia nitrogen content and coliform bacteria counts than the 500 kg m?3 density silage (< 0·05). The six isolated strains decreased pH, butyric acid content and increased lactic acid content, and all inoculants increased L. chinensis silage aerobic stability except LCL (< 0·05). The fermentation quality of L. chinensis silage increased with higher ensiling density. The LAB strains improved the fermentation quality, and high‐quality silage could be obtained at low ensiling density with the addition of the LAB strains. The strains improved the aerobic stability; Lb. buchneri and Lb. brevis showed the best performance.  相似文献

This experiment was carried out to improve understanding of sward and soil responses to cattle and/or sheep rotational grazing of low-input (no N fertilizer), natural swards dominated by smooth-stalked meadowgrass (Poa pratensis) syn. Kentucky bluegrass and based on white clover (Trifolium repens). Treatments during two grazing seasons (1989–90) were: cattle grazing alone (C); cattle grazing followed by topping (CT); cattle grazing followed by sheep grazing (CS); and sheep grazing alone (S), Mean target pre- and post-grazing herbage masses were 2200 and 1100 kg dry matter (DM) ha?1. Plants in sheep-grazed swards regrew more quickly and accumulated more herbage (8·28 compared to 5·35 t DM ha?1 for cattle-grazed swards, unadjusted for rejected area) than in other treatments. After 2 years, soil in sheep-grazed areas contained 0·25% N, 5·7 kg available P ha?1, and 379 kg K ha?1, compared to an average of 0·19, 3·9, and 179 respectively for the same soil nutrients in cattle-grazed treatments. Besides differences in manure distribution and sward rejection, differences in soil compaction among treatments also may have affected soil organisms and thus plant growth. After 2 years, soil bulk densities (g cc?1) were 1·37, 1·37, 1·27, and 1·12; soil penetrometer measurements (kg cm sec?1 sec?1) to 20-cm soil depth were 9·8, 9·3, 9·5, and 6·7; soil nematodes per 100 g of soil were: 5333, 8705, 2810, and 15208; soil rotifers per 100 g soil were: 288, 242, 715, and 33; and earthworms m?2 (and their biomass (g m?2)) were 262 (205), 157 (162), 344 (409), and 294 (343) for C, CT, CS, and S treatments, respectively.  相似文献

Three red clover (Trifolium pratense) varieties differing in productivity and winter hardiness, Jokioinen, Betty and Ilte, were sown in a 2‐year (2003–2004) pot experiment in pure stands and mixtures with the grasses, timothy (Phleum pratense), tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) and meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis). Grass growth dominated until fertilizer‐N, applied when the stands were sown, was depleted. Timothy was the least competitive of the grass species. Red clover variety Ilte produced the highest dry‐matter (DM) yields. Variety Betty yielded less, but allocated as much biomass to the root and stubble (soil‐bound) fraction as variety Ilte. Variety Jokioinen allocated least to the soil‐bound fraction. While the root structure and the starch concentration of the crown‐root area were similar in all varieties, the high ratio of soil‐bound: harvested fractions could be a key to the higher winter survival and higher DM yields of Betty under field conditions. At the end of the experiment, 3–5 g N pot?1 (49–81 g m?2) had been harvested and 0·7–1·5 g N pot?1 (11–24 g m?2) was left in the soil‐bound fraction, amounts depending on the red clover variety and grass mixture, with pure clover stands containing the highest N amounts. Because of the high N concentrations in the biomass of red clover, the proportion of red clover and conditions prevailing during canopy and root death in mixed stands are crucial for N mineralization and incorporation into new growth.  相似文献

High (H; 27 350 m?1:) or low (L. 13 300 m-1) tiller density perennial ryegrass swards were created in the mid- and late grazing season by imposing different sward heights in the spring. Summer-calving cows then grazed these swards from 6 June to 2 September 1992 and were offered 5 kg fresh weight hd?1 d?1 of either a barley (S) or a molassed sugar beet pulp (F) based supplement. The factorial combination of sward and supplement types resulted in four experimental swards being grazed by thirteen Holstein/Friesian cows each. Supplement F contained more crude fibre (110 vs. 58 g kg?1) and less metabolizable energy [12–5 vs. 13–2 MJ kg?1 dry matter (DM)] than supplement S. Herbage on the H sward contained more metabolizable energy (11–9 vs. 104 MJ kg?1 DM) and crude protein (232 vs. 205 g kg?1 DM), had fewer rejected areas f 16–5 vs. 26–9%) and a higher live-dead tiller ratio (4–6 vs. 2–1) than that on the L sward. Sward, but not supplement type, significantly affected the intake of grazed herbage (P<0–001). On average, the herbage intakes of cows grazing II swards were higher than for L swards (14–5 vs. 11 6kg DM d?1) and those of cows on the S and F supplements were 12–6 and 13–5 kg DM d?1 respectively. Averaged over the grazing period, sward and supplement had no significant effects on milk yield, milk composition or yield of constituents. When expressed on an average weekly basis, cows grazing an L sward and offered the F supplement on occasions had significantly lower milk yields and higher milk fat contents (P<005) than those grazing an H sward and offered the S supplement. There were no significant effects on cow live weight or condition score change. The results suggested that grazing swards with a high density of live tillers increased herbage intakes and on occasions milk yield, relative to low density swards. However, small increases in energy intake from sward and supplement effects were used primarily to ameliorate liveweight loss.  相似文献
