One Health: the small animal dimension

Earlier this year, the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) established a One Health committee with the remit of positioning small companion animals in the global One Health framework. Here, Michael Day, the chairman of that committee, explains how companion animals fit within the One Health concept.     

Emerging zoonotic epidemics in the interconnected global community

The rate at which epidemics of zoonotic disease in humans have surfaced over the past 25 years has shaken--some would say shattered--the assumption that zoonotic diseases are under control, says Paul Gibbs. In this review he analyses the global factors that have led to the increased emergence of zoonotic diseases, sketches several recent epidemics (and where relevant, their relationship to bioterrorism), discusses the lessons learned, and concludes by outlining an agenda for action.     

Veterinarians teaching at schools of agriculture in Germany (up to 1950)--their contribution to animal nutrition

During the 19th century in Germany mainly veterinarians working at agricultural schools or appointed to veterinary schools from there (for example HAUBNER, ROLOFF, DAMMANN, ALBRECHT, KRONACHER) made considerable contributions to the development of animal nutrition. They disseminated knowledge of feedstuffs and feeding techniques to the interested public at large by books concerning animal husbandry and especially "Gesundheitspflege" (health regimen; Tab. 1). Their experimental work (Tab. 2) extended from digestibility of feedstuffs, Ca-, P- and rumen metabolism (NPN), respectively, to feed intoxications. The interest in preventive measures being stronger at school of agriculture than at veterinary schools probably stimulated this development.
