An experiment was conducted to determine the effect of aerobic training after a sedentary period on bone remodeling and Ca and P balance and serum concentrations in varying ages of mature horses. Eighteen stock-type geldings were blocked into three age groups (6 to 10, 11 to 15, and 16 and older years of age), within two groups of nine, with horses randomly assigned to one of two exercise treatments, exercised for 112 days (control) or idle for 56 days followed by 56 days of exercise (treated). Blood samples were taken at the beginning of period I and at 14-day intervals thereafter to determine serum concentrations of osteocalcin (OST), Ca, and P. Dorsal-palmar and lateral-medial radiographs were taken of the left third metacarpal bone on days 0, 56, 84, and 112 to monitor changes in bone density. Total fecal and urine collections were taken for 72 hours on days 0, 56, and 112. Mean serum OST concentrations were affected by treatment (P<.02), time (P<.001); and the interactions of treatment and age (P<.003), time and treatment (P<.001), and time, treatment, and age (P<.001). Overall dorsal (DBRAE), palmar (PRBAE), and medial (MRBAE) RBAE means were affected by time (P<.001), as was overall lateral (LRBAE) RBAE mean (P<.005). Overall DBRAE and PRBAE means were lower (P<.04) at day 56, and higher at day 84 (P<.02) and 112 (P<.001) as compared to day 0. Mean serum Ca concentration was affected by treatment (P<.003) and time (P<.001). Mean serum P concentration was affected by the interaction of time and treatment (P<.001). Mean apparent daily Ca balance was affected bythe interaction of time, treatment, and age (P<.03). Mean apparent daily P balance was affected by treatment (P<.02) and time (P<.001). Biochemical and radiographic data from this experiment suggest that bone remodeling as well as Ca and P balance and serum concentrations are affected by age, inactivity, and exercise in mature horses.  相似文献

This experiment assessed the effects of 12 mo of daily treatment of young horses with recombinant equine somatotropin (eST) on 1) carcass and internal organ traits at necropsy and 2) residual effects in live horses for 60 d after cessation of treatment. Seven horses received eST daily at 20 microg/kg BW; seven others received vehicle (controls). Four horses from each group were killed at the end of treatment. There were few effects of eST treatment on hematologic assessments or histopathologic evaluations of internal organs. Treatment with eST increased the weights of the right adrenal gland (P = 0.090), left (P = 0.085) and right (P = 0.013) kidneys, liver (P = 0.012), tended to inrease the weights of pancreas (P = 0.082), spleen (P = 0.008), and heart (P = 0.102), and decreased (P = 0.032) somatotropin (ST) content in the adenohypophysis. Loin-eye area at the 10th rib was also greater (P = 0.01) in eST-treated horses than in controls. There was no difference (P > 0.15) between groups in left adrenal, brain, parathyroid glands, or thyroid gland weights or in 10th-rib fat thickness. In the remaining two control and three eST-treated horses (one control horse died), plasma IGF-I concentrations were higher (P = 0.001) in treated animals through d 6 after cessation of treatment and then dropped precipitously. Insulin concentrations in treated animals tended to be elevated (P = 0.08) only on d 0. There was a treatment x day interaction (P = 0.04) for plasma urea nitrogen levels, which increased in treated horses. A decrease (P < 0.05) in BW in the treated animals was observed by 21 d after treatment. There was no difference (P > 0.15) in insulin or glucose response to glucose tolerance tests given on d 0 through 60 after cessation of treatment. Overall ST response to secretagogue was reduced (P < 0.05) in eST-treated horses compared with controls. In summary, long-term treatment of growing horses with eST decreased endogenous ST response to secretagogue and increased plasma IGF-I concentrations and many internal organ weights but had little effect on hematologic or histopathologic characteristics at necropsy. The effects on IGF-I concentrations were lost within 6 d, and BW in treated horses decreased within 3 wk after cessation of treatment.  相似文献

Sixteen Quarter Horse weanlings were used in a splitplot design experiment to determine the effects of dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) on mineral metabolism, osteocalcin concentration and variables of growth. Horses were blocked by age and sex and then randomly allotted to two treatment groups (High or Low). Experimental diets with a DCAD of +325 (High, H) and −52 (Low, L) were formed by supplementing diet H with sodium bicarbonate and diet L with calcium chloride. The DCAD was calculated as meq (Na+K)−(Cl+S)/kg of diet DM. The 25-week trial consisted of three 72 h collection periods at 150, 240 and 330 d of age during which a complete urine collection was taken.Multiple fecal grab samples were collected to represent every 2 h post-feeding during each collection period. Venous blood samples were taken for analysis of serum osteocalcin concentration. Weekly measurements were taken to monitor skeletal growth. Representative samples of feed, feces and urine were analyzed for mineral content and apparent mineral balances were calculated by difference. Although osteocalcin concentration did not differ significantly between diets H and L at 150 and 330 d of age, it was higher (P<.05) at d 240 in horses consuming diet H versus diet L. No difference (P>.05) was detected between treatments in any skeletal growth variable measured. Phosphorus balance and digestibility did not differ significantly between treatments across d of age. However, digestibility of P was lower (P<.05) at d 240 and 330 compared to d 150 in both treatments. Horses consuming diet L experienced an increased (P<.05) urinary and a decreased (P<005) fecal excretion of Ca compared to horses consuming diet H. Apparent daily Ca balance was higher (P<.05) in horses consuming diet L than those on diet H at 240 and 330 d of age. Furthermore, Ca digestibility decreased significantly between d 150 and d 240 and 330 in horses consuming diet H. Horses consuming diet L experienced no difference (P>.05) in Ca digestibility across d of age.These findings suggest that horses consuming a low DCAD diet are able to compensate for the increased urinary excretion of Ca by enhancing intestinal Ca absorption and thereby increasing daily CA balance and digestibility.  相似文献

Aging has been associated with declines in somatotropin and IGF-I levels as well as declines in immune function. To determine the effects of age and whether ST administration could reverse immunosenescence in horses, eight young and eight aged female standardbred horses were given 10 mg/d recombinant equine somatotropin (eST) or vehicle buffer for 49 d. Plasma IGF-I concentrations in both age groups were higher in eST-treated animals (P < 0.001), and higher in young eST-treated mares than in aged eST-treated mares during wk 4 to 7 (P < 0.001). There was a trend toward lower monocyte and granulocyte numbers (P = 0.07) in mares treated with eST. Aged mares treated with eST had lower lymphocyte numbers (P < 0.005). The percentage of CD4+ lymphocytes was higher in aged mares (P < 0.001), and the percentage of CD8+ lymphocytes was higher in young mares (P < 0.01). Lymphocyte proliferation in response to concanavalin A, phytohemagglutinin, and pokeweed mitogen was not lower in aged mares (P = 0.17, 0.17, and 0.13 respectively). Aged mares treated with eST showed a lower peak primary antibody response to keyhole limpet hemocyanin (P < 0.05). Young mares treated with eST showed a higher peak primary antibody response to keyhole limpet hemocyanin (P < 0.05). Like other species, horses exhibit similar signs of age-related declines in various immune parameters, but those of aging were not reversed with eST treatment.  相似文献

Thirty juvenile horses were paired by age within sex, and one horse from each pair was randomly assigned to either eST treatment or to a control group. The horses were “broke” to ride and trained in a regimen typical for young racehorses. Radiographs were taken on days 0, 32, 50, 64, 82, 96 and 128 of the study. Increase in total radiographic bone aluminum equivalence (RBAE) was significantly greater in eST treated horses than in the control group (P<.003). Increase in medial RBAE was also significantly greater due to eST treatment (P<.0001). Trends were apparent for increases due to eST treatment in dorsal RBAE (P=.07) and lateral RBAE (P=.07). Bone density was selectively increased in the dorsal, lateral and medial vs. the palmar cortex in the eST treated horses.  相似文献

Studies comparing the absorption and retention of various forms of trace minerals in horses have yielded mixed results. The objective of this study was to compare Cu and Zn absorption and retention in exercising horses where the mineral was supplemented in the sulfate or organic chelate form. Nine mature horses were used in a modified switchback design experiment consisting of seven 28-d periods. Horses were fed a diet consisting of 50% concentrate and 50% hay that was balanced to meet the energy, protein, Ca, and P requirements for horses performing moderate-intensity exercise. Horses were subjected to a controlled mineral repletion-depletion diet sequence before feeding the experimental diet to standardize mineral status across horses. The experimental diet was designed to provide 90% of the 1989 NRC for Cu and Zn, with supplemental mineral provided in the inorganic sulfate form (CuSO(4) and ZnSO(4)) or the organic chelate form (Cu-Lys and Zn-Met). Feed, fecal, urine, and water samples collected during a total collection during the last 4 d of the experimental diet periods were analyzed to determine apparent absorption and retention of Cu and Zn from the 2 mineral forms. A formulation error caused horses receiving the organic chelate diet to consume about 3 times the amount of Cu and Zn compared with those fed the sulfate-supplemented diet. Copper and Zn intake and fecal excretion were greater (P < 0.05) for horses consuming the organic chelate-supplemented diet. Apparent absorption values for all horses were negative. Apparent Cu absorption and retention as a percentage of intake were greater for horses fed the organic chelate diet (P < 0.05). It is unknown why excretion of Cu and Zn by the horses during the total collection exceeded the mineral intake. Although Cu-Lys seemed to be better absorbed than CuSO(4) and absorption of Zn-Met and ZnSO(4) were not different, these results are tempered by the observation of abnormally high fecal and urinary excretion values for Cu and Zn in the present study.  相似文献

Fifty-three Quarter Horses were put into race-training at 18 mo of age. Changes in the third metacarpal were monitored by radiographic densitometry initially at 83 days prior to the commencement of training and at days 0, 62, 104 and 244 of training. A normal increase in density of the third metacarpal due to growth and mineralization was seen from the first set of radiographs until the horses began training at day 0 (P<.001). Bone density then decreased to day 62 (P<.001), remained low through day 104 before it began to increase to day 244 (P<.005). Differences in the most optically dense portion of each cortex of the third metacarpal were compared in horses completing the study without injury and those sustaining a bone-related injury. Horses experienced fewer injuries when they had greater cortical mass in the lateral (P<.05) and medial (P<.1) aspects of the third metacarpal, relative to the palmar aspect, at the commencement of training.  相似文献

Three experiments were conducted to evaluate serum osteocalcin concentrations in normal weanling and yearling Quarter Horses. In Experiment 1, jugular blood samples were taken at 3 hr intervals for 24 hr to evaluate diurnal changes in serum osteocalcin concentration of foals (n=3) and yearlings (n=5). In Experiment 2, twelve Quarter Horse foals were weaned at 4 months of age to determine the influence of sex, weaning and method of weaning of serum osteocalcin concentration. The third experiment utilized fifteen yearling Quarter Horses (7 geldings, 8 fillies) in a two-phase trial to evaluate normal peripheral osteocalcin concentration in sedentary and exercising horses. In Experiment 1, there was no detectable variation (P>.05) in serum osteocalcin concentration during the 24 hr sample period in either age group. In Experiment 2, colts had greater (P<.05) osteocalcin concentrations than fillies at weaning. Method of weaning did not alter mean serum osteocalcin concentration (P>.1). Serum osteocalcin concentrations declined (P<.05) in all horses following weaning but returned to preweaning levels within one week. In Experiment 3, sedentary horses had similar (P>.1) osteocalcin concentrations on d 0, 45 and 90. Serum osteocalcin concentrations of sedentary horses were not affected by sex (P>.1). During exercise, fillies had greater (P<.05) osteocalcin concentrations than geldings. Serum osteocalcin concentrations of all horses declined linearly (P<.0001) during the 90 d exercise period. Osteocalcin may be useful as a tool to assess bone metabolism during growth and physical conditioning in horses. However, variability in serum osteocalcin concentrations due to age, sex and level of activity suggest that these factors must also be considered.  相似文献

Coastal Bermuda grass hay was fed as the sole source of nutrients to determine comparative voluntary intake and nutrient digestibility of hay in yearling and mature horses. Yearling horses consumed dry matter at a higher (P<.10) percentage of their body weight (2.5%) than mature horses (2.0%). digestion of hemicellulose was higher (P<.05) in mature horses, but digestion of dry matter, gross energy, neutral detergent fiber and crude protein was similar between the 2 classes of horses.  相似文献

Forage acceptability of five cool season annual grasses and four annual clovers to yearling horses was evaluated in Georgia during winter and spring of two years. With cafeteria grazing trials, preference in consumption was determined by difference in forage harvested from mower strips before and after grazing. In four test grazing periods,annual ryegrass was preferred (P<.05) by the yearlings, averaging 75% apparent consumption of the dry forage. Oats and wheat were second in preference, averaging 47 and 41% respectively. Rye and triticale were least preferred, averaging only 35 and 32% apparent consumption, respectively. Of the annual clovers tested, crimson, berseem, and subterranean were all highly palatable (P<.05) to horses with an average consumption of 71% across all three clover varieties. Arrowleaf clover was unacceptable (P<.05), having only 22% apparent consumption. Yearling horses avoided grazing rye, triticale, and arrowleaf clover when other forages were available.  相似文献

To test whether mineral recommendations for horses are likely to guarantee adequate mineral provision for black rhinoceroses (Diceros bicornis), we investigated the apparent absorption (aA) of macro- and microminerals in eight black rhinoceroses from three zoological institutions in a total of 32 feeding trials with total faecal collection, with additional data from three unpublished studies (18 feeding trials). Feeds and faeces were analysed for Ca, P, Mg, Na, K, Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn and Co. The resulting aA coefficients, and the linear relationships of apparently absorbable dietary mineral content to total dietary mineral content [per 100 g dry matter (DM)], were compared with data for domestic horses. Rhinoceroses had significantly higher aA coefficients for Ca and Mg (because of a higher calculated 'true' absorption), and lower ones for Na and K (because of calculated higher endogenous faecal losses). High absorption efficiency for divalent cations is hypothesized to be an adaptation to a natural diet of particularly high Ca:P ratio (approximately 14:1); an effective removal of Ca from the ingesta guarantees sufficient P availability at the fermentation site in the hindgut. Higher faecal losses of Na and K are hypothesized to be linked to a higher faecal bulk per DM intake in black rhinoceroses as compared with horses because of a generally lower digestive efficiency. There were no relevant differences in the absorption patterns of microminerals. In particular, there were no discernable differences in Fe absorption within the rhinoceroses for diets with and without tannin supplementation. Several of the zoo diets assessed in this study were deficient in Cu, Mn or Zn, and most contained excessive levels of Fe when compared with horse requirements. The findings of this study indicate that differences in mineral absorption between occur even between species of similar digestive anatomy; that in particular, Ca absorption might vary between hindgut fermenters with Ca:P ratio in their natural diet; that Na might be a particularly limiting factor in the ecology of free-ranging rhinoceroses; that moderate doses of tannins do not seem to markedly influence mineral absorption; and that diets for captive animals should contain adequate, but not excessive mineral levels.  相似文献

Muscle biopsy samples were removed from the m gluteus medius of 47 retired running Quarter Horse (QH) mares. Horses were separated based on bloodline, past racing history and percentage Thoroughbred (TB). The bred to run and raced (BRRA) and bred to run and not raced (BRNR) groups possessed a lower percentage (P<.01) of fast-twitch low oxidative (FT) fibers (BRRA 38.6 and BRNR 36.2±2.54 respectively). These horses also possessed a higher percentage (P<.01) of fast-twitch high oxidative (FTH) fibers (BRRA 52.5 and BRNR 48.5±2.54, respectively) than not bred to run and not raced (NBNR) horses. Horses that were bred to run had higher (P<.05) FTH to FT fiber ratios (1.44) than horses that were not bred to run (.94). Successful racehorses possessed a lower percentage (P<.05) of slow-twitch (ST) fibers and a higher percentage (P<.05) of FT fibers than unsuccessful racehorses. Success or failure was determined by Speed Index. No differences (P>.05) were found in the percentage FTH fibers between successful and unsuccessful horses.  相似文献

To test whether mineral recommendations for horses are likely to guarantee adequate mineral provision for tapirs (Tapirus spp.), we investigated the apparent absorption (aA) of macro and micro‐minerals in 18 tapirs from five zoological institutions in a total of 24 feeding trials with total faecal collection. Samples of feeds and faeces were analysed for Ca, P, Mg, Na, K, Fe, Cu and Zn. The resulting aA coefficients and the linear relationships of apparently absorbable dietary mineral content to total dietary mineral content (per 100 g dry matter) were compared with data for domestic horses. While there were no apparent differences in the absorption patterns for P, K, Na, Fe, Cu or Zn, the absorption of both Ca and Mg was distinctively higher in tapirs than in horses. Tapirs are browsers that are adapted to a diet of higher Ca content and higher Ca:P ratio than equids, and high absorptive efficiency for Ca might have evolved to ensure that high dietary Ca concentrations do not lead to the binding of dietary P in the intestine, making it unavailable for hindgut microbes. Similar to other hindgut fermenters, in tapirs, absorption coefficients for Ca increased with dietary Ca:P ratio, and urinary Ca:creatinine ratios increased with dietary Ca. Several zoo diets used were deficient in one or more minerals. When compared with faeces of free‐ranging animals, faeces of zoo animals had higher concentrations of most minerals, probably indicating a lesser diluting effect of indigestible fibre in zoo animals.  相似文献

Four mares and four geldings of Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred breeding were used in two simultaneous 4x4 Latin square experiments to study the effects of dietary cation-anion balance (DCAB), defined as meq ((Na+K)-C1)/kg dry matter, on urinary pH and mineral excretion in exercised horses. Diets consisted of a pelleted concentrate of corn, soybean meal and cottonseed hulls fed with bermudagrass hay. Treatments with DCAB of +5 (Low, L), +107 (Medium Low, ML), +201 (Medium High, MH) and +327 (High, H), meq ((Na+K)-Cl)/kg dry matter were formed by supplementing diet L with calcium chloride and ammonium chloride, diet ML with calcium chloride and diet H with sodium bicarbonate and potassium citrate (Table 1). Diet MH was not supplemented and served as the control treatment. Horses were conditioned aerobically for 6 weeks using long, slow, distance (LSD) workouts. During the experimental periods, horses were subjected to a combined exercise regimen alternating LSD with an interval-training protocol 6 days/week. There was a significant (P<.01) treatment effect on urine pH; least squares means for L, ML, MH and H were 6.73, 7.17, 7.38, and 7.92. Horses consuming diet L excreted more calcium in the urine (P<.05) than those consuming MH or H. Least squares means for daily urine calcium excretion tended to be linear across treatments and ranged from 19.66 g/day for diet L to 9.12 g/day for diet H. Urinary chloride excretion was higher (P<.05) for L than for MH or H. Horses fed diet H excreted more sodium (P<.05) in urine than horses fed the other diets. Lowering DCAB, increases urinary calcium loss; depending on the level of calcium intake, this could lead to negative calcium balance in exercising horses.  相似文献

Eight geldings and four mares were randomly assigned treatments within three 4x4 Latin square design experiments to study the effects of dietary cation-anion balance (DCAB) on mineral balance and dry matter digestibility in sedentary and anaerobically exercised horses. Four diets with an average DCAB (calculated as meq ((Na+K+) - Cl-)/kg of diet dry matter) of +24 (Low, L), +127 (Medium Low, ML), +227 (Medium High, MH) and +352 (High, H) were fed for a 21 day adjustment period followed by a 72 hour collection period. Diets consisted of a pelleted base concentrate of com, soybean meal and cottonseed hulls fed with either native prairie grass or bermuda grass hay in a 60:40 ratio. Diet L was formed by adding calcium chloride and ammonium chloride to the base concentrate, diet ML was formed by adding calcium chloride, and diet H was formed by adding potassium citrate and sodium bicarbonate. Diet MI-I received no supplementation and served as the control. Representative samples of feed, feces and urine were analyzed for mineral content and mineral balances were calculated by difference. Fecal output was greater (p <.05), and thus, dry matter digestibility was lower in exercised homes consuming diet L versus diet H. Sodium balance was greater (p <.05) in sedentary horses consuming diet MH as compared to those consuming diets ML and L Sodium balance was greater (p <.05) in exercised homes consuming diet H as compared to those consuming diets ML and L Potassium balance was greater (p <.05) in sedentary horses consuming diet H as compared to those horses consuming diet ML, however, potassium balance was not affected by DCAB in exercised horses. No significant differences were detected in chloride or magnesium balances in the sedentary horses, although chloride balance was greater (p <.05) and magnesium balance was lower (p <.05) in exercised homes consuming diet L as compared to all other diets. In sedentary homes, phosphorus balance was reflective of intake with differences (p <.05) observed between all treatments. However, in exercised homes, phosphorus balance was lower (p <.05) oniy for those consuming diet L. Calcium balance decreased significantly as DCAB decreased between all treatments in sedentary horses, while calcium balance in exercised homes was greater (p <.05) for homes consuming diet H as compared to those consum- ing diet L.Previous research from our laboratory has shown that both exercised and sedentary horses consuming diets with a low DCAB experience a nutritionally induced metabolic acidosis. The current data indicate that anaerobically exercised and sedentary horses consuming these diets excrete significantly more calcium in the urine resulting in decreased calcium balances. Prolonged consumption of diets with a low DCAB may lead to a significant demineralization of bone and a subsequent weakening of the skeleton.  相似文献

This experiment was conducted to determine if additional mineral supplementation during early training would increase mineral retention and improve the strength of bone as indicated by the mineral content of the third metacarpal. Twelve previously untrained Quarter Horse geldings were randomly divided into two groups, broke to ride, trained to gallop on the track and maintained in training for four 28-day periods. One group of four horses served as controls and was fed a ration averaging 28.3 g of Ca/day and 21.9 g P/day while in training. Eight other horses were fed a ration averaging 34.9 g Ca/day and 26.4 g P/day while in training. Feed, feces and urine were analyzed to determine mineral balance. Radiographs were taken of the left front leg to examine bone density as indicated by radiographic bone aluminum equivalence (RBAE). The high mineral treatment group retained more Ca than controls (P<.05) at days 56 and 84. An increase in Ca retention would prove beneficial in facilitating the bone remodeling process and overall skeletal growth. Additionally, the high mineral group had a greater increase in total RBAE (P<.05) when compared to the control group. Hence, it appears that benefit was derived from feeding the greater amount of Ca to the young racehorse at the onset of training.  相似文献

In a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square experiment conducted in summer, eight mature Thoroughbred horses received two diets, control and fat-supplemented, and were exercised at two fitness levels designed to increase daily digestible energy (DE) requirements to approximately 150% (fitness level I) and 200% (fitness level II) of maintenance. In a second experiment during the winter, horses received the two diets in a switchback design and exercised at fitness level II. After 3 wk adaptation to treatments, feed and fecal samples were collected and horses galloped a standardized exercise test (SET) designed to increase the heart rate above 185 bpm for 1200 m. Vital signs were monitored and blood samples were obtained. Feed intake increased as fitness level increased (P < .05). Horses on the fat-supplemented diet required less feed (P < .05) to meet the energy requirements at a given fitness level. Daily DE intake was higher (P < .05) for the horses exercised at fitness level II to meet the increased metabolic demands. Heart rate, respiration rate and rectal temperature all increased (P < .05) with exercise. No treatment effects were found for heart rate (P >. 10) or rectal temperature (P > .30). Horses exercised in the winter had lower (P < .05) respiration rates, indicative of less problems dissipating excess body heat. Plasma aldosterone concentrations increased (P < .05) with exercise, corresponding to an increase in plasma K concentrations. Horses exercised in the summer exhibited higher (P < .05) plasma aldosterone concentrations than horses worked in the winter. Plasma CI and Na concentrations did not change (P > .30) with any treatment or exercise, indicating that the horses were not sufficiently stressed to induce any significant dehydration.  相似文献

Apparent absorption and retention of Ca, P, Mg, K, Cu, Mn, Zn, and S were determined in Holstein heifers treated with recombinant bovine somatotropin (bST). Six heifers (initial BW averaged 104 kg) were assigned to various doses of bST in a 6 x 6 Latin square design with six consecutive 21-d periods. Treatments were daily i.m. injections of 0, 6.7, 33.3, 66.7, 100, or 200 micrograms of bST/kg of BW on d 8 to 21 of each period. All heifers were fed a hay-concentrate diet, and nutrient digestibilities and balances were determined on d 14 to 20 of each period. Mineral concentrations in feed, water, excreta, and blood plasma were determined with an inductively coupled argon plasma-emission spectrometer. Exogenous bST did not affect apparent absorption or retention of Ca, P, Mg, K, Cu, Mn, or Zn. Plasma CU concentration was greater (P less than .05) in heifers receiving bST (82 micrograms of Cu/dl) than in those receiving excipient (73 micrograms of Cu/dl); plasma concentrations of other elements were not affected by bST. Injection of bST did not affect S absorption, but urinary S excretion decreased (P less than .05) and S retention increased (P less than .05) as dose of bST increased. The amount of S retained (1.5 g/d) when the heifers received the largest dose of bST was approximately 50% greater than the amount retained when heifers received excipient. These results demonstrate that bST affects the postabsorptive metabolism of S. Generally, bST did not affect nutrient digestibilities. Effects of bST on dietary mineral requirements were not determined because of the relatively short (14 d) treatment periods.  相似文献

Twelve horses were utilized in a 2 × 2 factorial experiment to investigate the proportionality of the skeleton (small and large framed) and musculature (light and heavy) of mature horses. Large framed horses were longer from the elbow to fetlock, knee to fetlock, hock to fetlock, and from the poll to the end of the nasal bone than small framed horses. Withers height was correlated (P<.001) with the lengths of all long bones (r=.85 to .95) with the exception of the metacarpal bone (r=.69, P<.05). Yet when the lengths of the head, legs, scapula, humerus, femur, tibia, metacarpal, and metatarsals were expressed as a percentage of withers height, no differences between frame sizes were observed.The heavily muscled horses had greater (P<.05) rear quarter width, forearm circumference, gaskin circumference, head width and length than did the lightly muscled horses. The weights of the extensor carpi radialis, biceps femoris, and total round muscle were greater for the heavily muscled horses. Correlations (P<.001) between the weights of the biceps femoris and the total round muscle, total round tissue, and gaskin circumference ranged from .89 to .94 while correlations (P<.001) of the biceps femoris weight with quarter width and extensor carpi radialis were .83 and .82, respectively.Cannon wall area and circumference measurements did not differ for frame size or the degree of muscling but a correlation (r=.75, P<.01) was noted between the cannon circumference taken on the live horses and the actual circumference of the large and small metacarpals.The demonstrated relationship between the lengths of the long bones and height of a horse indicate little value for many of the traditional conformation guidelines governing selection of the ideal conformation horse. Horsemen should realize that many body lengths such as elbow to fetlock actually represented a relatively constant percentage of withers height. Lengths of the scapula, humerus, metacarpal, femur, and tibia also reflected a constant relationship with withers height. The correlations between the extensor carpi radialis and the biceps femoris weights refute the common belief that horses may naturally (no forced exercise) be more heavily muscled in either the fore or rear quarter. Therefore, the data support the theory of proportionality relative to the conformation of the skeletal size and muscling of predominantly Quarter Horse bred horses.  相似文献

Sixteen 10-wk-old, phosphorus (P)-depleted Holstein bull calves were fed for 6 wk a control diet containing .08% P or P-supplemented diets containing .14, .20 or .32% P with supplemental P from two sources (CDP and Dynafos). The diets contained .45, .56, .66 and .87% Ca. After 5 wk of the experiment, the calves were dosed orally with 65Zn, and daily total fecal collections were initiated. At the end of the experimental period, the calves were killed and tissue samples were taken for total Zn and 65Zn analyses. Growth, feed intake and feed efficiency improved with increasing dietary P levels. Level of dietary P and Ca had little or no effect (P greater than .05) on total Zn content of rib, tibia, liver, heart, kidney, muscle or blood. Likewise, 65Zn absorption and content in most tissues were not affected (P greater than .05). The results do not preclude the possibility of some minor effects of P levels on Zn metabolism. However, it is apparent that when adequate Zn is fed, any effects are likely to be of little or no practical importance.  相似文献
