Seasonal differences in the resumption of postpartum ovarian activity, milk production and periparturient metabolic status were investigated in lactating non-suckling dairy Awassi sheep in two consecutive experiments. In Experiment 1, autumn-lambing (AL, n = 27) and spring-lambing (SL, n = 37) ewes were investigated. Ovarian activity was monitored by means of individual progesterone (P4) profiles from day 5 to day 100 post partum. Most of the AL dams (89%) ovulated till day 35 after parturition and became cyclic thereafter. Incidence of persistent corpus luteum (CLP) and short luteal phases (sCL) was frequent (18% and 29%, respectively) among non-conceiving dams. In contrast, only 24% of the SL ewes ovulated before day 35. P4 levels during the luteal phase were lower in cyclic animals, and the cycle was longer in SL than in AL animals. No CLP or sCL was detected in the spring-lambing group, and 61% of SL ewes remained acyclic till the end of the trial. Lactation length was significantly longer in SL dams than in AL ewes (P = 0.008). According to the plasma metabolites (BHB, NEFA) and metabolic hormones (insulin, IGF-I, thyroxine) examined, negative energy balance did not appear in any of the animals. However, seasonal differences were seen in IGF-I and thyroxine levels, which were higher in the SL dams. In Experiment 2, influence of additional lighting was studied in autumn-lambing ewes. The long-day photoperiod (LD, n = 23) group was exposed to artificial light from sunset till midnight (approx. 16 h light/8 h dark) from some weeks before the expected date of delivery in mid-September until the end of December. The control group (n = 25) experienced only natural daylength. The first postpartum ovulation tended to occur later in the LD animals than in the controls (P = 0.047). The lactation of the LD group tended to be longer (P = 0.061). NEFA, BHB, insulin, IGF-I and thyroxine levels did not differ between the groups. Conclusions: (i) The ovarian function of the Awassi population is seasonal under temperate continental climate conditions. (ii) The first postpartum ovulation of non-suckling, autumn-lambing dams may occur very early, even before the completion of uterine involution. (iii) Additional artificial lighting may delay the time of first postpartum ovulation in AL ewes. (iv) Postpartum negative energy balance is unlikely to occur in dairy Awassi ewes even in high-producing intensive systems.  相似文献

Age at puberty is a major determinant of lifetime reproductive efficiency of beef cows. Research conducted during the past 20 yr has documented the major endocrine events leading to first ovulation in heifers. The critical event seems to be a prepubertal increase in pulsatile LH secretion. Environment influences timing of puberty onset in beef heifers. Nutrition and season are two of the better-defined variables that have been studied. Age at puberty is related inversely to plane of nutrition. The effect of nutrition on sexual maturation involves effects on timing of the prepubertal increase in LH secretion and seems to involve the LH pulse generating system located in the hypothalamus. The precise mechanism by which nutrition influences pulsatile LH secretion has not been elucidated, but signals reflecting metabolic status seem to be involved. Seasonal conditions of the early (birth to 6 mo of age) and late (6 to 12 mo of age) postnatal periods also influence timing of puberty onset in the heifer. Autumn-born heifers attain puberty at younger ages than do spring-born heifers, and exposure to spring-summer temperatures and photoperiods during the second 6 mo of life reduces age at puberty regardless of season of birth. Photoperiod may be the major seasonal cue that influences puberty onset in cattle. Limited evidence suggests that melatonin, a pineal hormone, is involved with transducing photic stimuli into neuroendocrine signals that influence LH secretion. If the physiological mechanisms mediating the effects of nutrition and season on timing of puberty onset are determined, then management strategies for reducing age at puberty can be enhanced.  相似文献

Three experiments, using a total of 132 pre-pubertal gilts, were carried out to investigate the influence of contact with oestrous female pigs on the attainment of puberty by gilts. Experiment 1 compared the effect of removing the gilts from their groups as they reached puberty in response to exposure to a boar, with leaving the gilts in their groups for five to 15 days after puberty or five to 15 days after second oestrus. All the groups exposed to boars reached puberty significantly earlier than controls (P less than 0.05) but there was no difference between these groups in their mean age at puberty. However, the synchrony of puberty was significantly greater among the gilts which remained in their groups after puberty (P less than 0.01) or second oestrus (P less than 0.001) than among the gilts which were removed at puberty. Experiment 2 investigated the influence of housing pre-pubertal gilts with penmates induced into puberty with injections of oestradiol benzoate. Puberty was significantly advanced by the presence of penmates regularly exhibiting oestrous periods. Experiment 3 compared the effect of daily exposure to an anoestrous ovariectomised sow, an oestrous ovariectomised sow or a boar, on the attainment of puberty by gilts. Gilts exposed to either an oestrous sow or a boar were significantly younger at puberty than isolated control animals (P less than 0.05) whereas the mean age at puberty of gilts exposed to an anoestrous sow was not significantly different from that of controls.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Urethral pressure and electromyographic evaluations were performed in 10 healthy, intact female cats and in 10 healthy, ovariohysterectomized (OVH) female cats. Mean maximum urethral closure pressure was 71.4 +/- 25 cm of water for intact cats and 77.5 +/- 31.3 cm of water for OVH cats. Mean maximum pressure of the proximal 60% of the urethral pressure profile length was 39.2 +/- 7.4 cm of water for intact cats and 32.1 +/- 11.6 cm of water for OVH cats. Mean maximum pressure of the distal 40% of the urethral pressure profile length was 76.2 +/- 27.4 cm of water in intact cats and 80.5 +/- 32.9 cm of water in OVH cats. Significant differences between intact and OVH cats were not found in mean maximum urethral closure pressure, proximal urethral sphincter pressure, or distal urethral sphincter pressure.  相似文献

Testicular diameters and monthly blood samples were obtained from 83 stallions aged 4 to 22 years that were maintained on Central Kentucky Thoroughbred stud farms. The effects of age, season, and exposure to increased photoperiod (16 hours light/day, December 15 to April 1) on testicular diameters and plasma concentrations of FSH, LH and testosterone were studied.The results indicated that Thoroughbred stallions show distinct seasonal and age related changes in most of the reproductive parameters studied and that exposure of such stallions to increased photoperiod produced significant alterations in these changes. Although lighting stimulated testicular growth and testosterone secretion early in the breeding season such changes were short lived. Lighted stallions appeared to become refractory to the lighting program since both testicular size and plasma testosterone concentrations were significantly reduced by June.  相似文献

The seasonal reproductive cycle of stallions is characterized by an annual regression and recrudescence in testicular function and concentrations of LH, FSH, and testosterone in serum. Maximum reproductive capacity occurs during the increasing day lengths of spring and summer. The annual cycle in LH secretion may reflect a seasonally associated and photosensitive reduction and replenishment in pituitary content of LH. Similar to other seasonal breeders, it appears that stallions may possess an endogenous circannual rhythm in reproductive function that is subject to manipulation by altering the light:dark ratio, i.e., photoperiod. The application of a long-day photoperiod (16 hours light:8 hours dark) in December, following 20 weeks of short days (8 hours light:16 hours dark), was effective in hastening the seasonal sexual recrudescence of stallions but was not effective in prolonging the interval of heightened reproductive capacity. The infantile period in colts lasts approximately 32 weeks and is characterized by low gonadotropin concentrations and little gonadal activity. The start of the pre-pubertal period is marked by changes in the hypothalamic-pituitary axis which result in increased amounts of LH and FSH secretion between 32 and 40 weeks of age. Testosterone concentrations in serum exhibit a dramatic increase at 75 to 80 weeks of age, with puberty (defined as the age when the first ejaculate was obtained containing a minimum of 50 x 10(6) sperm with greater than or equal to 10% progressive motility) occurring at 83 weeks of age.  相似文献

Two experiments were designed to determine if melatonin concentrations differ between jugular veins. In a first experiment, blood was collected continuously every 30 min from each jugular during 12-h from 6 ewes. In a second experiment, 100 ewes were sampled twice at night simultaneously from the two jugular veins. In both experiments, mean melatonin concentrations were similar between right and left jugulars. However, within individuals, large differences were observed between the two sides (p < 0.001). This difference was stable over time and the higher side varies among individuals. The concentrations of prolactin and oxytocin, measured in the same samples did not show such differences. This observation raises the question of the origin of this phenomenon. Moreover, it has important implications for studies in which melatonin concentrations need to be assessed accurately. Indeed, a reliable quantitative assessment of melatonin production by the pineal gland requires sampling from both jugular veins.  相似文献

The timing of the onset of puberty, duration of seasonal ovulatory activity, and length of postpartum anestrus were studied by means of blood plasma progesterone concentrations in a flock of European female mouflons (Ovis gmelini musimon) maintained in captivity under natural photoperiod (40 degrees 25'N). Concentrations of progesterone in the peripheral blood were determined by radioimmunoassay in samples collected from the jugular vein twice a week. First ovulations in the breeding season were highly synchronized and occurred in mid-October. In contrast, the cessation of ovulatory cycles showed significant variation among females and extended from February to May, depending on age, with 2-yr-old animals exhibiting the longest anovulatory period (P < 0.01). When lambing occurred within the breeding season (February-April), 12 out of 26 animals had their first ovulation 25 +/- 1.8 days after parturition. The 14 late-lambing females had the first postpartum ovulation delayed until the next breeding season. March/April-born mouflon lambs that reached a minimum threshold body weight (23.8 +/- 0.6 kg) in their first breeding season reached puberty at 8 mo of age. In those with slower growth rates, however, the prepubertal period was extended throughout the first breeding and nonbreeding seasons, reaching puberty during the breeding season of the following year at 19 mo of age and 27 +/- 0.3 kg body weight. Further, attainment of puberty in ewe lambs born in June/July was also delayed until the breeding season of the following year, when animals had reached a threshold body weight at 17 mo of age.  相似文献

In order to better understand androgen secretion in the tom cat during the breeding season, observations of diurnal changes in peripheral blood testosterone (T) levels, were made and the relation between androgen levels (androstenedione (A), 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone (DHT). T) in testicular and peripheral vein blood was borne. Histologic examinations of the testis were also performed to investigate spermatogenic function. The 9 tom cats used in these studies were 2-3 years old, weighed 3.5-4.0 kg, and were raised in a room under natural lighting. As a result, diurnal peripheral blood T levels in the tom cat fluctuated greatly according to each individual, but since no definite trend could be identified, secretion was determined to be episodic. Although fairly large differences in the 3 types of androgen were observed in testicular vein blood depending on the individual animal, levels on the left and right were almost equal. Moreover, a correlation was found between the testicular and peripheral vein blood concentrations of the 3 androgens (A: p less than 0.01; DHT: p less than 0.05; T: p less than 0.01). Therefore, secretion of testicular androgen can be inferred by measuring peripheral blood androgen levels. Testicular histological examination revealed active spermatogenesis in all of the cats, and no significant inter individual differences were detected in either seminiferous tubule diameters or any of the various germ cells.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether obese cats, compared with lean cats, have alterations in lipoprotein metabolism that might lead to a decrease in glucose metabolism and insulin secretion. ANIMALS: 10 lean and 10 obese adults cats (5 neutered males and 5 neutered females each). PROCEDURE: Intravenous glucose tolerance tests with measurements of serum glucose, insulin, and nonesterified fatty acid (NEFA) concentrations were performed. Lipoprotein fractions were examined in serum by isopycnic density gradient ultracentrifugation. RESULTS: Obese cats had insulin resistance. Plasma triglyceride and cholesterol concentrations were significantly increased in obese cats, compared with lean cats. Very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) concentrations were increased in obese cats, compared with lean cats; however, the composition of various fractions remained unchanged between obese and lean cats, indicating greater synthesis and catabolism of VLDL in obese cats. Serum high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol concentrations were increased in obese cats, compared with lean cats. Serum NEFA concentrations were only significantly different between obese and lean cats when separated by sex; obese male cats had higher baseline serum NEFA concentrations and greater NEFA suppression in response to insulin, compared with lean male cats. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Lipid metabolism changes in obese cats, compared with lean cats. The increase in VLDL turnover in obese cats might contribute to insulin resistance of glucose metabolism, whereas the increase in serum HDL cholesterol concentration might reflect a protective effect against atherosclerosis in obese cats.  相似文献

The postprandial increase in glucose concentration is typically not considered in selecting diets to manage diabetic and pre-diabetic cats. This study describes increases in glucose and insulin concentrations in 24 clinically healthy, neutered adult cats following one meal (59 kcal/kg) of a moderate carbohydrate diet (25% of energy). Median time to return to baseline after feeding for glucose was 12.2 h (1.8-≥24 h) and for insulin was 12.3 h (1.5-≥24 h). Time to return to baseline for glucose was not different between male (10.2 h) and female (17.2 h) cats. There was evidence female cats had a longer return to baseline for insulin (18.9 h versus 9.8 h) and females had higher (0.9 mmol/l difference) peak glucose than males. This demonstrates that the duration of postprandial glycaemia in cats is markedly longer than in dogs and humans, and should be considered when managing diabetic and pre-diabetic cats.  相似文献

The effect of blue LED on melatonin secretion, feeding behaviour and growth was addressed in Holstein female dairy calves. In Exp.1, six animals (8 weeks old, 97 ± 4.1 kg BW) were exposed to yellow or blue LED for 2 hr before darkness over 7 days under a long‐day photoperiod (LDPP). In Exp. 2, six animals (8 weeks old, 88.5 ± 4.8 kg BW) were exposed to blue light from a white LED all daytime or a yellow LED for 2 hr before the darkness of LDPP (blue light cut) over 3 weeks. In Exp. 1, blue light mildly suppressed melatonin secretion during the 2‐hr treatment but did not affect the timing of the nightly melatonin rise. However, the rise in nighty melatonin levels was higher with yellow than blue LED. In Exp. 2, white LED completely suppressed melatonin secretion during the 2‐hr treatment, but plasma melatonin concentrations were similar during the darkness. Grass hay intake, rumination time, frequency of water intake and body weight gain were higher in animals exposed to the yellow rather than the white LED. Overall results indicate that exposure to blue light from white LEDs under an LDPP suppresses melatonin secretion and might negatively impact the development of female dairy calves.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to clarify the effect of photoperiod on nighttime secretion of growth hormone (GH) in goats. Adult female goats were kept at 20°C with an 8 h or 16 h dark photoperiod, and secretory patterns of GH for 8 h in the dark period were examined with the profile of prolactin (PRL) secretion. GH was secreted in a pulsatile manner in the dark period. There were no significant differences in pulse frequency between the 8‐ and 16‐h dark photoperiods; however, pulse amplitude tended to be greater in the group with the 16‐h dark photoperiod (P = 0.1), and mean GH concentrations were significantly greater in the same photoperiod (P < 0.05). PRL secretion increased quickly after lights off under both photoperiods. The PRL‐releasing responses were weaker in the 8‐h than 16‐h dark photoperiod. The secretory response to photoperiod was more obvious for PRL than GH. The present results show that a long dark photoperiod enhances the nighttime secretion of GH in female goats, although the response is not as obvious as that for PRL.  相似文献

AIM: To determine if exogenous oestradiol or the phyto-oestrogen genistein could reduce food intake in male and female cats fed ad libitum that had been allowed to accrue excessive bodyfat following neutering. METHODS: Sixteen adult (eight female, eight male) cats were neutered and allowed to increase their bodyweight (BW) through feeding ad libitum of a complete and balanced dry diet. Oestradiol was injected subcutaneously for 5-day periods in incremental doses (0.25-4 microg per cat), then food intake was recorded, and vaginal cytological changes were observed in females. Similarly, genistein was administered orally for 5-day periods in incremental doses (5-100 mg/kg). RESULTS: In males and females, both oestradiol (p<0.001) and genistein (p=0.037) significantly reduced food intake during treatment, and the minimum daily doses that produced a significant effect were 0.5 mug and 100 mg/kg, respectively. The minimum daily dose of oestradiol that produced a significant effect on food intake was not associated with changes in vaginal cytology over the 5-day treatment period. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Gonadal oestradiol appeared to be a key modulator of food intake in both male and female cats, and replacement of oestrogen to neutered cats via oestradiol or an oestrogen surrogate such as genistein has potential for reducing the prevalence of obesity in neutered cats.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether changes in concentrations of hormones involved in glucose and fatty acid homeostasis are responsible for the increased probability that neutered cats will develop obesity and diabetes mellitus. ANIMALS: 10 male and 10 female weight-maintained adult cats. PROCEDURE: Results of glucose tolerance tests and concentrations of hormones and nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA) were examined before and 4, 8, and 16 weeks after neutering. RESULTS: Caloric requirements for weight maintenance were significantly decreased 8 and 16 weeks after neutering in females. Glucose concentrations during a glucose tolerance test did not change in neutered females or males. The area under the curve (AUC) for insulin was significantly higher in males, compared with females, before neutering. However, the AUC for insulin increased and was significantly higher 4 and 8 weeks after neutering in females. The AUC for insulin did not change in neutered male cats. Leptin concentrations did not change in females but increased significantly in males 8 and 16 weeks after neutering. Thyroxine concentrations did not change after neutering; however, free thyroxine concentration was significantly higher in females than males before neutering. Baseline concentrations of NEFA were significantly higher in female than male cats before but not after neutering. Suppression of NEFA concentrations after glucose administration decreased successively in male cats after neutering, suggesting decreased insulin sensitivity. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Changes in NEFA suppression, caloric intake, and leptin concentrations may be indicators of, and possible risk factors for, the development of obesity in cats after neutering.  相似文献
