Abstract

To determine the means and variations in CH4 uptake and N2O emission in the dominant soil and vegetation types to enable estimation of annual gases fluxes in the forest land of Japan, we measured monthly fluxes of both gases using a closed-chamber technique at 26 sites throughout Japan over 2 years. No clear seasonal changes in CH4 uptake rates were observed at most sites. N2O emission was mostly low throughout the year, but was higher in summer at most sites. The annual mean rates of CH4 uptake and N2O emission (all sites combined) were 66 (2.9–175) µg CH4-C m?2 h?1 and 1.88 (0.17–12.5) µg N2O-N m?2 h?1, respectively. Annual changes in these fluxes over the 2 years were small. Significant differences in CH4 uptake were found among soil types (P < 0.05). The mean CH4 uptake rates (µg CH4-C m?2 h?1) were as follows: Black soil (95 ± 39, mean ± standard deviation [SD]) > Brown forest soil (60 ± 27) ≥ other soils (20 ± 24). N2O emission rates differed significantly among vegetation types (P < 0.05). The mean N2O emission rates (µg N2O-N m?2 h?1) were as follows: Japanese cedar (4.0 ± 2.3) ≥ Japanese cypress (2.6 ± 3.4) > hardwoods (0.8 ± 2.2) = other conifers (0.7 ± 1.4). The CH4 uptake rates in Japanese temperate forests were relatively higher than those in Europe and the USA (11–43 µg CH4-C m?2 h?1), and the N2O emission rates in Japan were lower than those reported for temperate forests (0.23–252 µg N2O-N m?2 h?1). Using land area data of vegetation cover and soil distribution, the amount of annual CH4 uptake and N2O emission in the Japanese forest land was estimated to be 124 Gg CH4-C year?1 with 39% uncertainty and 3.3 Gg N2O-N year?1 with 76% uncertainty, respectively.  相似文献

Limited data are available on ammonia (NH3), nitrous oxide (N2O), carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) emissions from poultry housing in Mediterranean countries. The aim of the present study was to assess the NH3, N2O, CO2 and CH4 emission rates from commercial breeding hen and broiler houses under Mediterranean climate conditions. Research was conducted at one commercial breeding hen house and in two commercial broiler houses located in central Portugal. The environmental conditions, gas concentrations and ventilation rates were measured in the cold (8.0?±?2.1 °C) and hot (20.7?±?1.9 °C) season for the breeding hen house, whereas for the two broiler houses, measurements were made during one fattening cycle in the fall (17.3?±?1.7 °C) season. Results showed that the annual average emission rates for breeding hen and broiler houses were 0.52?±?0.27 and 0.06?±?0.01 for NH3, 0.030?±?0.042 and 0.006?±?0.001 for N2O, 169.6?±?56.2 and 58.0?±?15.1 for CO2 and 0.092?±?0.131 and 0.0113?±?0.0002 g day?1 bird?1 for CH4, respectively. The N2O emission rates observed in breeding hen houses may have been overestimated, being higher than previously reported for Mediterranean countries.  相似文献

Abstract

To evaluate the hypothesis that plant-mediated oxygen supplies decrease methane (CH4) production and total global warming potential (GWP) in a tropical peatland, the authors compared the fluxes and dissolved concentrations of greenhouse gases [GHGs; CH4, carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrous oxide (N2O)] and dissolved oxygen (DO) at multiple peatland ecosystems in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. Study ecosystems included tropical peat swamp forest and degraded peatland areas that were burned and/or drained during the rainy season. CH4 fluxes were significantly influenced by land use and drainage, which were highest in the flooded burnt sites (5.75 ± 6.66 mg C m?2 h?1) followed by the flooded forest sites (1.37 ± 2.03 mg C m?2 h?1), the drained burnt site (0.220 ± 0.143 mg C m?2 h?1), and the drained forest site (0.0084 ± 0.0321 mg C m?2 h?1). Dissolved CH4 concentrations were also significantly affected by land use and drainage, which were highest in the flooded burnt sites (124 ± 84 μmol L?1) followed by the drained burnt site (45.2 ± 29.8 μmol L?1), the flooded forest sites (1.15 ± 1.38 μmol L?1) and the drained forest site (0.860 ± 0.819 μmol L?1). DO concentrations were influenced by land use only, which were significantly higher in the forest sites (6.9 ± 5.6 μmol L?1) compared to the burnt sites (4.0 ± 2.9 μmol L?1). These results suggest that CH4 produced in the peat might be oxidized by plant-mediated oxygen supply in the forest sites. CO2 fluxes were significantly higher in the drained forest site (340 ± 250 mg C m?2 h?1 with a water table level of ?20 to ?60 cm) than in the drained burnt site (108 ± 115 mg C m?2 h?1 with a water table level of ?15 to +10 cm). Dissolved CO2 concentrations were 0.6–3.5 mmol L?1, also highest in the drained forest site. These results suggested enhanced CO2 emission by aerobic peat decomposition and plant respiration in the drained forest site. N2O fluxes ranged from ?2.4 to ?8.7 μg N m?2 h?1 in the flooded sites and from 3.4 to 8.1 μg N m?2 h?1 in the drained sites. The negative N2O fluxes might be caused by N2O consumption by denitrification under flooded conditions. Dissolved N2O concentrations were 0.005–0.22 μmol L?1 but occurred at < 0.01 μmol L?1 in most cases. GWP was mainly determined by CO2 flux, with the highest levels in the drained forest site. Despite having almost the same CO2 flux, GWP in the flooded burnt sites was 20% higher than that in the flooded forest sites due to the large CH4 emission (not significant). N2O fluxes made little contribution to GWP.  相似文献

To determine nitrogen (N) fate and environmental impact of applying anaerobic digestion slurry (ADS) to rice paddy (Oryza sativa L.), a field experiment was established using three treatments based on contrasting N application rate. The ADS (with ammonium-N accounting for >80 % of total N) treatment at a conventional application rate of 270 kg N?ha?1 was compared to a negative control (no N fertilizer) and a positive control of urea applied at 270 kg N?ha?1. The N budget showed the following distribution of applied N from ADS and urea: 41.3?±?5.1 % for ADS and 36.6?±?4.4 % for urea recovered by the rice plant (including straw, grain, and root), 16.4?±?3.7 % for ADS and 7.4?±?1.8 % for urea lost via ammonia volatilization, 0.26?±?0.15 % for ADS and 0.15?±?0.12 % for urea lost by direct N2O emission, 1.9?±?0.5 % for ADS and 2.3?±?0.8 % for urea leached downward, 0.70?±?0.15 % for ADS and 0.67?±?0.12 % for urea discharged with floodwater drainage, and 39.4?±?8.4 % for ADS and 53.0?±?9.1 % for urea retained by soil or lost by N2 emission. Compared to urea application, ADS application impacts the environment mainly through gaseous N losses rather than water N losses. ADS application had a positive impact on rice grain yield and reduced chemical fertilizer use. Considering the wide distribution of paddy fields and the ever-increasing quantities of ADS, ADS may serve as a valuable N source for rice cultivation, although mitigating ammonia and N2O losses should be further investigated.  相似文献

A field experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of two whole-crop rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars, TULT and Takanari, on methane (CH4) emission in a paddy field fertilized with biogas slurry (BS) at rates of 0 (NF), 100 (BS100) and 300 (BS300) kg nitrogen (N) ha?1, in comparison with chemical fertilizer CF100 (100 kg N ha?1). Takanari produced significantly higher biomass (< 0.001) than TULT and showed significantly (< 0.01) lower CH4 emission than TULT. BS applications caused higher CH4 emission (52 ± 27 and 80 ± 19 g m?2 in BS100 and BS300, respectively) than did CF100 (42 ± 18 g m?2) and NF (28 ± 10 g m?2) in TULT. In contrast, there was no significant difference in CH4 emission in Takanari among the treatments (26 ± 2, 26 ± 2, 32 ± 4, 29 ± 8 g m?2 in NF, CF100, BS100 and BS300, respectively). Methane oxidizing bacteria (MOB) showed significantly (< 0.05) higher populations in Takanari than in TULT at harvest, which might be due to the higher root biomass (10.3 ± 2.2 g hill?1) in Takanari than in TULT (8.9 ± 1.8 g hill?1). MOB was significantly correlated with tiller number (R2 = 0.176*) and plant biomass (R2 = 0.242*). BS application showed higher copper (Cu) uptake in Takanari while it was not high in TULT. In contrast, it showed no difference in zinc (Zn) uptake in both varieties. Uptake of Cu was not different between the two varieties, while uptake of Zn in the grain was higher in TULT than in Takanari. The present study suggests that CH4 emission deriving from BS application in paddy field can be mitigated by selecting an appropriate cultivar, like Takanari. However, care should be taken for heavy metal uptake in selecting cultivars.  相似文献

The combined seeding and cropping of non-leguminous and leguminous cover crops during the cold fallow season is recommended as an important agronomic practice to improve total biomass productivity and soil fertility in mono-rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivation system. However, application of plant residues as green manure can increase methane (CH4) emission during rice cultivation and affect rice quality and productivity, but its effects are not well examined. In this field study, the mixture of barley (Hordeum vulgare R.) and hairy vetch (Vicia villosa R., hereafter, vetch) seeds with 75 % recommended dose (RD 140 kg ha?1) and 25 % RD (90 kg ha?1), respectively, were seeded after rice harvesting in late November, 2010, and harvested before rice transplanting in early June 2011. Total aboveground biomass was 36 Mg ha?1 (fresh weight basis with 68 % moisture content), which was composed with 12 Mg ha?1 of barley and 24 Mg ha?1 of vetch. In order to determine the optimum recycling ratio of biomass application that can minimize CH4 emission without affecting rice productivity, different recycling ratios of 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100 % of the total harvested biomass were incorporated as green manure 1 week before rice transplanting in a typical temperate paddy soil. The same rates of chemical fertilizers (N–P2O5–K2O?=?90–45–58 kg ha?1) were applied in all treatments. Daily mean CH4 emission rates and total CH4 fluxes were significantly (p?<?0.05) increased with increasing application rates of cover crop biomass. Rice productivity also significantly (p?<?0.05) increased with biomass application, but the highest grain yield (53 % increase over the control) was observed for 25 % recycling. However, grain quality significantly (p?<?0.05) decreased with increasing cover crop application rates above 25 % recycling ratio, mainly due to extended vegetative growth periods of rice plants. Total CH4 flux per unit grain yield, an indicator used to simultaneously compare CH4 emission impact with rice production, was not statistically different between 25 % biomass recycling ratio and the control but significantly increased with increasing application rates. Conclusively, the biomass recycling ratio at 25 % of combined barley and vetch cover crops as green manure might be suitable to sustain rice productivity without increasing CH4 emission impact in mono-rice cultivation system.  相似文献

Biochar application can reduce global warming via carbon (C) sequestration in soils. However, there are few studies investigating its effects on greenhouse gases in rice (Oryza sativa L.) paddy fields throughout the year. In this study, a year-round field experiment was performed in rice paddy fields to investigate the effects of biochar application on methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions and C budget. The study was conducted on three rice paddy fields in Ehime prefecture, Japan, for 2 years. Control (Co) and biochar (B) treatments, in which 2-cm size bamboo biochar (2 Mg ha?1) was applied, were set up in the first year. CH4 and N2O emissions and heterotrophic respiration (Rh) were measured using a closed-chamber method. In the fallow season, the mean N2O emission during the experimental period was significantly lower in B (67 g N ha?1) than Co (147 g N ha?1). However, the mean CH4 emission was slightly higher in B (2.3 kg C ha?1) than Co (1.2 kg C ha?1) in fallow season. The water-filled pore space increased more during the fallow season in B than Co. In B, soil was reduced more than in Co due to increasing soil moisture, which decreased N2O and increased CH4 emissions in the fallow season. In the rice-growing season, the mean N2O emission tended to be lower in B (?104 g N ha?1) than Co (?13 g N ha?1), while mean CH4 emission was similar between B (183 kg C ha?1) and Co (173 kg C ha?1). Due to the C release from applied biochar and soil organic C in the first year, Rh in B was higher than that in Co. The net greenhouse gas emission for 2 years considering biochar C, plant residue C, CH4 and N2O emissions, and Rh was lower in B (5.53 Mg CO2eq ha?1) than Co (11.1 Mg CO2eq ha?1). Biochar application worked for C accumulation, increasing plant residue C input, and mitigating N2O emission by improving soil environmental conditions. This suggests that bamboo biochar application in paddy fields could aid in mitigating global warming.  相似文献

Purpose

Directly returning straw back to the paddy field would significantly accelerate methane (CH4) emission, although it may conserve and sustain soil productivity. The application of biochar (biomass-derived charcoal) in soil has been proposed as a sustainable technology to reduce methane (CH4) emission and increase crop yield. We compared the effects of either biochar or rice straw addition with a paddy field on CH4 emission and rice yield.

Materials and methods

A 2-year field experiment was conducted to investigate a single application of rice straw biochar (SC) and bamboo biochar (BC) (at 22.5 t ha?1) in paddy soil on CH4 emission and rice yield as compared with the successive application (6 t ha?1) of rice straw (RS). Soil chemical properties and methanogenic and CH4 oxidation activities in response to the amendment of biochar and rice straw were monitored to explain possible mechanism.

Results and discussion

SC was more efficient in reducing CH4 emission from paddy field than BC. Incorporating SC into paddy field could decrease CH4 emission during the rice growing cycle by 47.30 %–86.43 % compared with direct return of RS. This was well supported by the significant decrease of methanogenic activity in paddy field with SC. In comparison to a non-significant increase with BC or RS application, rice yield was significantly raised with SC amendment by 13.5 % in 2010 and 6.1 % in 2011. An enhancement of available K and P and an improvement in soil properties with SC amendment might be the main contributors to the increased crop yield.

Conclusions

These results indicated that conversion of RS into biochar instead of directly returning it to the paddy field would be a promising method to reduce CH4 emission and increase rice yield.  相似文献

To evaluate the impacts of organic cropping system on global warming potentials (GWPs), field measurements of CH4 and N2O were taken in conventional and organic rice (Oryza sativa L.) cropping systems in southeast China. Rice paddies were under various water regimes, including continuous flooding (F), flooding–midseason drainage–reflooding (F-D-F), and flooding–midseason drainage–reflooding and moisture but without waterlogging (F-D-F-M). Nitrogen was applied at the rate of 100 kg N ha?1, as urea-N or pelletized, dehydrated manure product in conventional or organic rice paddies, respectively. Seasonal fluxes of CH4 averaged 4.44, 2.14, and 1.75 mg m?2 h?1 for the organic paddy plots under the water regimes of F, F-D-F and F-D-F-M, respectively. Relative to conventional rice paddies, organic cropping systems increased seasonal CH4 emissions by 20%, 23%, and 35% for the plots under the water regimes of F, F-D-F, and F-D-F-M, respectively. Under the water regimes of F-D-F and F-D-F-M, seasonal N2O-N emissions averaged 10.85 and 13.66 μg m?2 h?1 in organic rice paddies, respectively, which were significantly lower than those in conventional rice paddies. The net global warming potentials (GWPs) of CH4 and N2O emissions from organic rice paddies relative to conventional rice paddies were significantly higher or comparable under various water regimes. The greenhouse gas intensities were greater, while carbon efficiency ratios were lower in organic relative to conventional rice paddies. The results of this study suggest that organic cropping system might not be an effective option for mitigating the combined climatic impacts from CH4 and N2O in paddy rice production.  相似文献

In an incubation experiment with flooded rice soil fertilized with different N amounts and sampled at different rice stages, the methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) production in relation to soil labile carbon (C) pools under two temperature (35°C and 45°C) and moisture (aerobic and submerged) regimes were investigated. The field treatments imposed in the wet season included unfertilized control and 40, 80 and 120 kg ha?1 N fertilization. The production of CH4 was significantly higher (27%) under submerged compared to aerobic conditions, whereas CO2 production was significantly increased under aerobic by 21% compared to submerged conditions. The average labile C pools were significantly increased by 21% at the highest dose of N (120 kg ha?1) compared to control and was found highest at rice panicle initiation stage. But the grain yield had significantly responded only up to 80 kg ha?1 N, although soil labile C as well as gaseous C emission was noticed to be highest at 120 kg ha?1 N. Hence, 80 kg N ha?1 is a better option in the wet season at low land tropical flooded rice in eastern India for sustaining grain yield and minimizing potential emission of CO2 and CH4.  相似文献

The effect of controlled drainage on methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from a paddy field under controlled irrigation (CI) was investigated by controlling the sub-surface drainage percolation rate with a lysimeter. CI technology is one of the major water-saving irrigation methods for rice growing in China. Water percolation rates were adjusted to three values (2, 5, and 8 mm d?1) in the study. On the one hand, the CH4 emission flux and total CH4 emission from paddy fields under CI decreased with the increase of percolation rates. Total CH4 emissions during the growth stage of rice were 1.83, 1.16, and 1.05 g m?2 in the 2, 5, and 8 mm d?1 plots, respectively. On the other hand, the N2O emission flux and total N2O emissions from paddy fields under CI increased with the increase of percolation rates. Total N2O emissions during the growth stage of rice were 0.304, 0.367, and 0.480 g m?2 in the 2, 5, and 8 mm d?1 plots, respectively. The seasonal carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent of CH4 and N2O emissions from paddy fields under CI was lowest in the 2 mm d?1 plot (1364 kg CO2 ha?1). This value was 1.4% and 19.4% lower compared with that in the 5 and 8 mm d?1 plots, respectively. The joint application of CI and controlled drainage may be an effective mitigation strategy for reducing the carbon dioxide equivalents of CH4 and N2O emissions from paddy fields.  相似文献

Abstract

Burial of wheat straw in ditches and incorporation of wheat straw are the two main ways of returning wheat straw prior to rice cultivation in China. To examine the effect of burying wheat straw in ditches on CH4 emissions from rice cultivation, a field experiment was conducted at Yixing, Jiangsu, China in 2004. CH4 flux was measured using a closed-chamber technique in three treatments (CK, no wheat straw application; WI, evenly incorporating 3.75 t ha?1 wheat straw into the 0.1 m topsoil; WD, burying 3.75 t ha?1 wheat straw in 0.14-m deep by 0.25-m wide ditches). Seasonal CH4 emissions ranged from 49.7 to 218.4 kg CH4 ha?1. The application of wheat straw in these two ways significantly increased CH4 emissions by 4.0-fold and 4.4-fold, respectively (P < 0.05). Although CH4 flux from the non-ditch area in the WD treatment was as low as that in the CK treatment, it was counter-balanced by extremely high CH4 flux from the ditch, which was approximately 6.0-fold as much as that from WI, leading to comparability between treatments WI and WD in total CH4 emissions (P > 0.05). No significant difference was observed between the three treatments in grain yield (P > 0.05). The results indicated that burial of wheat straw in ditches is not a way to reduce CH4 emission from rice cultivation.  相似文献

Combination of a pre-season wet soil condition and rice straw incorporation just before transplanting, which is typical for a tropical rice double cropping, can induce a flash of methane (CH4) emission shortly after the transplanting. The conventional practice of alternate wetting and drying (AWD) irrigation technique that typically starts at 21 days after transplanting (DAT) can hardly reduce this emission because the soil become methanogenic before the onset of AWD treatment. Field experiments were conducted in Central Luzon, Philippines, during the 2014–2017 dry rice seasons to examine the effects of the timing of rice straw/stubble incorporation on the efficacy of AWD in reducing the CH4 emission. Two treatments of the timing of stubble incorporation were stubbles incorporated during the start of wet land preparation (S1) and stubbles incorporated during the dry fallow tillage (S2). For the water management, we compared two treatments: continuous flooding (CF) and AWD with – 15 cm threshold for irrigation. The AWD under S2 was implemented earlier at 10 DAT. We observed a significant interaction (p < 0.01) between effects of AWD and straw management on CH4 emissions; the seasonal total CH4 emission was reduced by AWD compared with CF by 73% under S2, while the reduction was <20% under S1. The AWD significantly (p < 0.05) increased the nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions by 47 and 48% relative to CF under S1 and S2, respectively. The global warming potential (GWP, CH4 + N2O) and yield-scaled GWP were still substantially lower by 62 and 59%, respectively, in AWD than in CF under S2, but the reduction was not realized under S1 due to the relatively smaller CH4 reduction and increased N2O emission. The results confirm that pre-season aerobic stubble decomposition and earlier implementation of AWD enhanced AWD’s mitigation potential in reducing substantially the CH4 emission from the tropical rice double-cropping system.  相似文献

Abstract

Methane emission rates from plots with and without fertilizer and rice straw application, and growth of two rice varieties (an improved variety, IR74 or IR64, and a local variety, Krueng Aceh) in two Indonesian paddy fields (Inceptisol and Alfisol soils of volcanic ash origin) were measured every week throughout the growth period in the first and the second cropping seasons, 1994. The CH4 emission rates from the fields were similar between the two varieties. The effect of chemical fertilizer on the increase of the emissions was observed only in the Tabanan paddy field for the plots treated with rice straw. Application of rice straw increased the CH4 emission rates. The mean rates of CH4 emission were 1.37-2.13 mg CH4?C m?2 h?1 for the plots without rice straw and 2.14–3.62 mg CH4?C m?2 h?1 for the plots with rice straw application in the Alfisol plots, and 2.32–3.32 mg CH4 -C m-2 h-1 for the plots without rice straw and 4.18–6.35 mg CH4?C m?2 h?1 for the plots with rice straw application in the Inceptisol plots, respectively. Total amounts of CH4 emitted during the growth period were 3.9–6.8 and 2.6–3.3 g CH4?C m?2 for the Alfisol plots and 6.9–10.7 and 4.2–5.8 g CH4?C m?2 for the Inceptisol plots with and without rice straw application, respectively. These findings suggested that CH4 emission from tropical paddy fields with soils of volcanic ash origin is low.  相似文献

Abstract

Forest fires can change the greenhouse gase (GHG) flux of borea forest soils. We measured carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes with different burn histories in black spruce (Picea mariana) stands in interior Alaska. The control forest (CF) burned in 1920; partially burned (PB) in 1999; and severely burned (SB1 and SB2) in 2004. The thickness of the organic layer was 22 ± 6 cm at CF, 28 ± 10 cm at PB, 12 ± 6 cm at SB1 and 4 ± 2 cm at SB2. The mean soil temperature during CO2 flux measurement was 8.9 ± 3.1, 6.4 ± 2.1, 5.9 ± 3.4 and 5.0 ± 2.4°C at SB2, SB1, PB and CF, respectively, and differed significantly among the sites (P < 0.01). The mean CO2 flux was highest at PB (128 ± 85 mg CO2-C m?2 h?1) and lowest at SB1 (47 ± 19 mg CO2-C m?2 h?1) (P < 0.01), and within each site it was positively correlated with soil temperature (P < 0.01). The CO2 flux at SB2 was lower than that at CF when the soil temperature was high. We attributed the low CO2 flux at SB1 and SB2 to low root respiration and organic matter decomposition rates due to the 2004 fire. The CH4 uptake rate was highest at SB1 [–91 ± 21 μg CH4-C m?2 h?1] (P < 0.01) and positively correlated with soil temperature (P < 0.01) but not soil moisture. The CH4 uptake rate increased with increasing soil temperature because methanotroph activity increased. The N2O flux was highest [3.6 ± 4.7 μg N2O-N m?2 h?1] at PB (P < 0.01). Our findings suggest that the soil temperature and moisture are important factors of GHG dynamics in forest soils with different fire history.  相似文献

Abstract

The dramatic increases in rice productivity and cultivation intensity through the implementation of green revolution (GR) technology using high yielding varieties (HYVs) of rice and chemical fertilizers were not long lasting in Indonesia. The stagnancy of rice productivity in recent years without any scientific reasons presents a challenge for agronomists and soil scientists in Indonesia. This study describes the effects of long-term intensive rice cultivation on the change in available silica (Si) in sawah soil. The term sawah refers to a leveled and bounded rice field with an inlet and an outlet for irrigation and drainage. Soil samples collected by Kawaguchi and Kyuma in 1970 and new samples taken in 2003 from the same sites or sites close to the 1970 sites were analyzed and compared. From 1970 to 2003, the average content of available Si decreased from 1,512 ± 634 kg SiO2 ha?1 to 1,230 ± 556 kg SiO2 ha?1 and from 6,676 ± 3,569 kg SiO2 ha?1 to 5,894 ± 3,372 kg SiO2 ha?1 in the 0–20 cm and 0–100 cm soil layers, respectively. Cultivation intensity differences between seedfarms planted with rice three times a year and non-seedfarms rotating rice and upland crops appeared to affect the changing rates of available Si within the study period. In the 0–20 cm soil layer, the average content of available Si decreased from 1,646 ± 581 kg SiO2 ha?1 to 1,283 ± 533 kg SiO2 ha?1 (?22%) and from 1,440 ± 645 kg SiO2 ha?1 to 1,202 ± 563 kg SiO2 ha?1 (?17%) in seedfarms and non-seedfarms, respectively. Differences in topographical position also influenced the decreasing rate of available Si in this study. Using similar management practices and cultivation intensity, upland sampling sites lost more Si compared with lowland sites. Planted rice under a rain fed system with no Si addition from rain water in an upland position may be a reason for the higher loss of Si, particularly in non-seedfarms. The Si supply from irrigation water might have contributed to the slowdown in the decreasing rate of available Si in Java sawah soils.  相似文献

The DNDC (DeNitrification-DeComposition)-Rice model, one of the most advanced process-based models for the estimation of greenhouse gas emissions from paddy fields, has been discussed mostly in terms of the reproducibility of observed methane (CH4) emissions from Japanese rice paddies, but the model has not yet been validated for tropical rice paddies under alternate wetting and drying (AWD) irrigation management, a water-saving technique. We validated the model by using CH4 and nitrous oxide (N2O) flux data from rice in pots cultivated under AWD irrigation management in a screen-house at the International Rice Research Institute (Los Baños, the Philippines). After minor modification and adjustment of the model to the experimental irrigation conditions, we calculated grain yield and straw production. The observed mean daily CH4 fluxes from the continuous flooding (CF) and AWD pots were 4.49 and 1.22?kg?C?ha?1?day?1, respectively, and the observed mean daily N2O fluxes from the pots were 0.105 and 34.1?g?N?ha?1?day?1, respectively. The root-mean-square errors, indicators of simulation error, of daily CH4 fluxes from CF and AWD pots were calculated as 1.76 and 1.86?kg?C?ha?1?day?1, respectively, and those of daily N2O fluxes were 2.23 and 124?g?N?ha?1?day?1, respectively. The simulated gross CH4 emissions for CF and AWD from the puddling stage (2 days before transplanting) to harvest (97 days after transplanting) were 417 and 126?kg?C?ha?1, respectively; these values were 9.8% lower and 0.76% higher, respectively, than the observed values. The simulated gross N2O emissions during the same period were 0.0279 and 1.45?kg?N?ha?1 for CF and AWD, respectively; these values were respectively 87% and 29% lower than the observed values. The observed total global warming potential (GWP) of AWD resulting from the CH4 and N2O emissions was approximately one-third of that in the CF treatment. The simulated GWPs of both CF and AWD were close to the observed values despite the discrepancy in N2O emissions, because N2O emissions contributed much less than CH4 emissions to the total GWP. These results suggest that the DNDC-Rice model can be used to estimate CH4 emission and total GWP from tropical paddy fields under both CF and AWD conditions.  相似文献

The agronomic benefits of manure application to increase rice production have been recognized, but the impact on global change has always been a controversial topic. This study was designed to determine the separate and combined effects of cattle manure (CM) and nitrogen (N) fertilizer on rice yield, N efficiency, and methane (CH4) emissions from rice cultivation. A pot-scale experiment was conducted with four levels (0, 60, 120, and 180 kg ha?1) of N from urea and two levels (120 and 180 kg ha?1) of N from combination of urea and CM (Urea:CM = 60:60 and 60:120). Rice yield and physiological N efficiency were obtained using agronomic measurements. To determine the global warming potential (GWP) of each treatment, CH4 emissions were measured throughout the rice-growing period. Grain yield (GY) was not significantly different between the treatments of 120 and 180 kg ha?1 regardless of N source. However, both rates of CM treatments enhanced CH4 emission and differences in GWP were significant. In conclusion, urea applied at 120 kg N ha?1 was optimal for rice productivity and environmental impact (EI) despite CM played a crucial role in improving the N efficiency and total N in the soil after harvest.  相似文献

Abstract

Methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from an irrigated rice field under continuous flooding and intermittent irrigation water management practices in northern China were measured in situ by the static chamber technique during May to October in 2000. The intermittent irrigation reduced total growing‐season CH4 emission by 24.22% but increased N2O emission by 23.72%, when compared with the continuous flooding. Soil Eh and four related bacterial groups were also measured to clarify their effects on gaseous emissions. Three ranges of soil redox potential were related to gas emissions: below ?100 mV with vigorous CH4 emission, above +100 mV with significant N2O emission, and +100 to ?100 mV with little CH4 and N2O emissions. Intermittently draining the field increased soil oxidation, with a decrease in CH4 emission and an increase in N2O emission. In general the mid‐season drainage slightly increased the populations of methanotrophs, nitrifiers, and denitrifiers but decreased that of methanogens.  相似文献

Purpose

The main objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of a counter-current leaching process (CCLP) on 14 cycles with leachate treatment at the pilot scale for Pb, Cu, Sb, and Zn removal from the soil of a Canadian small-arms shooting range.

Materials and methods

The metal concentrations in the contaminated soil were 904?±?112 mg Cu kg–1, 8,550?±?940 mg Pb kg–1, 370?±?26 mg Sb kg–1, and 169?±?14 mg Zn kg–1. The CCLP includes three acid leaching steps (0.125 M H2SO4?+?4 M NaCl, pulp density (PD)?=?10 %, t?=?1 h, T?=?20 °C, total volume?=?20 L). The leachate treatment was performed using metal precipitation with a 5-M NaOH solution. The treated effluent was reused for the next metal leaching steps.

Results and discussion

The average metal removal yields were 80.9?±?2.3 % of Cu, 94.5?±?0.7 % of Pb, 51.1?±?4.8 % of Sb, and 43.9?±?3.9 % of Zn. Compared to a conventional leaching process, the CCLP allows a significant economy of water (24,500 L water per ton of soil), sulfuric acid (133 L H2SO4 t–1), NaCl (6,310 kg NaCl t–1), and NaOH (225 kg NaOH t–1). This corresponds to 82 %, 65 %, 90 %, and 75 % of reduction, respectively. The Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure test, which was applied on the remediated soil, demonstrated a large decrease of the lead availability (0.8 mg Pb L–1) in comparison to the untreated soil (142 mg Pb L–1). The estimated total cost of this soil remediation process is 267 US$ t–1.

Conclusions

The CCLP process allows high removal yields for Pb and Cu and a significant reduction in water and chemical consumption. Further work should examine the extraction of Sb from small-arms shooting range.  相似文献
