Hybrid breeding is a widely discussed alternative for triticale. Heterosis as well as general (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) effects were estimated for eight agronomic traits. The experiment comprised 24 F1 hybrids, produced by a chemical hybridizing agent, together with their six female and four male parents, grown in drilled plots in two locations. In comparison with the mid‐parent values, hybrids averaged a 6.4 dt/ha (10.1%) higher grain yield, 8.4% more kernels per spike, a 6.8% higher 1000‐kernel weight, 9.7% lower falling number (FN) and 4.4% greater plant height. SCA effects for grain yield were significant and ranged from 4.5 to 6.9 dt/ha for grain yield. Together with GCA x location interactions, they explained most of the variation. For 1000‐kernel weight, GCA effects were predominant. SCA and interactions with location accounted for most of the variation in FN, whereas interactions were negligible for plant height. Correlations between mid‐parent and hybrid performance and between GCA and per se performance of parents were tight for all traits except grain yield, which allows for pre‐selection of parental lines. Although the amount of heterosis in triticale at present is closer to wheat than to rye, by selecting parents for combining ability and identifying heterotic patterns, grain yield heterosis of up to 20% appears sufficiently encouraging to embark on hybrid breeding.  相似文献

为确定新育成印水型杂交粳稻亲本的潜力,并为印水型杂交粳稻育种提供理论基础,本研究以4个不育系和4 个恢复系为亲本进行不完全双列杂交,研究产量及其构成因素的配合力。结果表明:产量性状一般配合力(GCA)方差均达到极显著水平,除结实率外,父本的一般配合力方差大于母本,单株产量、有效穗和结实率的特殊配合力(SCA)方差达到显著或极显著水平。139A和晚轮422 的GCA效应较高,产量性状以Ⅱ类为主,139A×晚轮422 和辽粳10A×晚轮422 的单株产量水平及组合SCA效应较高。父本GCA效应和组合SCA效应对产量性状的影响较大,母本GCA效应对产量性状的影响相对较小。本研究中,父本的遗传差异大于母本,对产量性状的影响也大于母本,139A和晚轮422 有较大的应用潜力。  相似文献

Summary Head blight caused by Fusarium culmorum and F. graminearum is damaging in all winter rye (Secale cereale L.) growing areas. For hybrid breeding, the relative magnitude of general (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) is a crucial parameter for developing appropriate selection procedures. Forty single-cross hybrids were produced by crossing six and seven inbred lines of the Petkus and Carsten gene pool, respectively, in a factorial design. Hybrids were evaluated in two years with artificial F. culmorum inoculation. Resistance traits were head blight rating and grain weight relative to the non-inoculated control. Both resistance traits were closely correlated across both years (r-0.8, P=0.01). Significant genotypic variation was found for both traits with medium to high estimates of heritability (h2=0.6-0.8). Components of variance for GCA were, across years, 10 and 6 times larger than those for SCA for head blight rating and relative grain weight, respectively. Significant SCA effects were found for 15 to 20% of all cross combinations across both traits in each year. SCA effects were, however, inconsistent over years leading to a high SCA-year interaction. In conclusion, resistance to Fusarium head blight among the interpool hybrids tested was conditioned mainly by additive gene action that could be utilized by recurrent selection in multi-environment trials.Abbreviations GCA general combining ability - SCA specific combining ability  相似文献

Understanding genetic mechanisms controlling inheritance of disease resistance traits is essential in breeding investigations targeting development of resistant genotypes. Using North Carolina design II, 32 F1 hybrids were generated by crossing eight susceptible to four resistant parents and submitted for field evaluation. The analysis of general and specific combining ability (GCA and SCA) indicated involvement of additive and non‐additive gene action controlling inheritance of horizontal resistance to sheath rot of rice. High GCA/SCA ratio and high heritability estimates revealed additive effects and were more predominant than none additive ones. The level of dominance indicated dominant genes was more important than recessive genes. Estimates of GCA and SCA analysis suggested that crop improvement programmes should be directed towards selection of superior parents or good combiners, emphasizing on GCA. As far as source of resistance is concerned, most promising genotypes were Cyicaro, Yunertian and Yunkeng. The predominance of additive genetic effects together with the relevance of dominant genes suggested possibilities of improving the resistance by introgression of resistance genes through recurrent selection coupled with phenotypic selection.  相似文献

Summary To study the mode of inheritance of W, RGR, NAR, LAR, SLA and LWR, the growth of 15 tomato genotypes and 104 of their F1's was analyzed. The plants were grown at a 19°C day temperature and a 10°C night temperature under a light intensity of 24 Wm-2 visible radiation and a daylength of 8 hours. Combining ability analyses of variance revealed highly significant differences in GCA values between parents for all characters studied and significant SCA values for some of the characters. GCA values for NAR and LAR, and for NAR and SLA were strongly negatively correlated. A strong positive correlation existed between GCA values for LAR and SLA. Southern United States long grain rice (Oryza sativa L.) is a unique market type characterized by intermediate amylose content, gelatinization temperature, and amylograph viscosity profile characteristics. Rice breeders sometimes use long grain germplasm with differing amylograph viscosity profiles. The inheritance of rice amylograph viscosity profiles has not been ascertained and, thus, was the objective of this study. A six parent diallel (parents plus F1 hybrids) was evaluated at Stuttgart, AR during 1994 and 1995. In 1994, 65 F2 plants from the ‘L-202’ × ‘Newrex’ and L-202 × ‘Katy’ crosses were space planted, and in 1995, the 65 F2:3 lines were planted as hill plots. The inheritance of amylograph viscosity profiles appeared to be controlled by a single locus with genes with additive effects. The results of the diallel analysis also support control by a single locus with genes with additive effects because GCA effects were significant and SCA effects nonsignificant for peak, hot paste, and cool paste viscosities. Intermediate amylose content and intermediate amylograph viscosity profiles were strongly correlated. Selection first for intermediate amylose content followed by reselection for intermediate hot paste viscosities would identify long grain genotypes with southern United States long grain cooking quality in progeny from crosses between southern United States long grain rice genotypes and softer cooking long grain genotypes. Barley breeders in Syria attempting to develop barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivars resistant to barley leaf stripe (BLS) disease caused by Pyrenophora graminea Ito & Kuribayashi [anamorph Drechslera graminea (Rabenh. Ex. Schlech. Shoem.)]. Information on the combining ability for BLS resistance in Syria is not available. This study was conducted to evaluate, in 10 genetically diverse barley parents, general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) effects towards the determination of the genetic basis of disease resistance and to estimate genetic variability for yield components and its modification by BLS. Ten parental genotypes varying in their reactions to BLS were crossed in a half-diallel mating design to generate 45 full-sib families. The families and the parents were inoculated with P. graminea and evaluated for resistance in replicated field tests (three inoculated and three non-inoculated plots). The parents chosen showed wide variations for resistance to BLS. Genetic component analysis showed significant effects for both GCA and SCA for resistance to BLS, suggesting that additive as well as non-additive genetic mechanisms were involved in the expression of resistance in these parents. GCA effects were more important than SCA effects. Resistant parents exhibited high negative GCA indicating that additive gene effects were more predominant, and suggesting their prime suitability for use in barley breeding programs to improve resistance to BLS. Narrow-sense heritability was 58% and broad-sense heritability was 99% indicating that selection for BLS resistance should be effective in these crosses. A high genetic variability for the agronomic traits studied was observed. Yield components decreased significantly in inoculated plants and more pronounced in diseased plants. Significant GCA was observed for all traits. Values for GCA were, in some cases, significantly modified by BLS. This indicates that attention must be paid to the danger of drawing conclusion in quantitative genetics studies dealing with both diseased and healthy plants. Two genotypes, Banteng and Igri, had high negative GCA effects and are promising parents for enhancement of BLS resistance.  相似文献

Ten F1's obtained from crosses among five common bean genotypes of Andean (WAF 15, Mineiro Precoce and Batatinha) and Middle American (BAT 304 and Ouro) gene pools were assessed for their combining abilities for root nodulation with Rhizobium tropici strain CIAT 899. The plants were grown under controlled conditions and evaluated for number of nodules per plant (NN), nodule dry weight (NDW), mean nodule weight (MNW) and plant fresh weight (PFW). The subdivision of the treatment effects on the general (GCA) and specific combining effects (SCA) were performed according to Griffing's diallel analysis method 2, model 1. The analyses of variance and estimates of quadratic components showed that non-additive gene effects were more important in the expression of NN and PFW, whereas additive gene effect was predominant for NDW and MNW. A close association was observed between high number of nodules and GCA. Generally, crosses involving parents of different gene pools yielded hybrids with high positive estimates of SCA for all assessed traits. The genotypes of Andean origin WAF 15 and Mineiro Precoce are the most promising parents for breeding programs to increase NN and NDW in common beans. Summary Cereal breeders have used harvest index (HI) as a selection criterion in segregating generations to identify physiologically superior lines with improved partitioning of total assimilate into grain. Information on combining ability for HI of the hard red winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars of the Southern Great Plains is not available. A study was undertaken to examine HI of seven genetically diverse winter wheat parents, evaluate their general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) effects, and study correlations of HI with several agronomic traits. The seven parents were crossed in a half-diallel mating design to produce 21 crosses. The F1's, their F2 progenies, and the parents were evaluated in replicated field tests at Stillwater and at Lahoma, OK. The combining ability analysis was performed using Griffing's Method 4, Model 1. The results showed significant variation among parents for HI. The GCA and the SCA effects were mostly inconsistent between generations and between environments. However, parents with consistently high HI and positive GCA estimates were identified. The progeny with high HI mostly resulted from parents with high GCA estimates. The correlations between HI and agronomic traits indicated that improvement in HI should also result in high grain yield, early maturity, and short plant height.  相似文献

应用完全双列杂交的遗传设计,以5个各具特性的水稻品种为材料,对收获指数的遗传进行研究。结果表明,收获指数的一般配合力(GCA)效应、特殊配合力(SCA)效应和反交(R)效应均达极显著水平,其方差比为2.595∶1.232∶1;F2群体收获指数从低到高呈连续的近正态分布,表现数量性状的遗传特点;在加性显性模型中加性效应和显性效应达极显著值,狭义遗传力和广义遗传力分别为40.17%、67.94%。遗传相关分析表明,收获指数与结实率显著正相关,与穗长、千粒重和生物量显著负相关,由于穗长、千粒重有较高的遗传力,因此在早代对穗长、千粒重进行选择能间接改良收获指数。初步明确水稻收获指数是一个由多基因控制的数量性状,符合加性显性模型,遗传以加性效应为主,显性效应和其它效应(如反交效应)也起一定的作用,遗传力较高,可在早期分离世代进行选择。上述的结果将为水稻新品种选育提供理论依据。  相似文献

Studies have shown no consensus in relationships between seed yield and vigor in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill]. The lack of information regarding the inheritance of seed vigor prompted this study to determine the types of gene action and combining ability estimates for seed vigor and its related traits. Five high and six low seed vigor soybean genotypes were crossed in a diallel, and selfed to produce 55 F2 progenies, which were examined, along with the parents, for seed vigor, yield, and seed weight. Significant genotype and environment effects were found for seed vigor and yield. General combining ability (GCA) effects for seed vigor and seed yield were significant (p≤ 0.01) and larger than specific combining ability (SCA) effects. Significant GCA and SCA effects were found for seed weight, indicating that both additive and non additive genetic effects were involved in conditioning seed weight. The ratios of mean square, 2GCA / (2GCA+SCA), were 0.96 for seed vigor and 0.93 for seed yield. These ratios indicated that additive gene effects were more important than non additive gene effects for seed vigor and seed yield in these crosses. Mean seed vigor(83.8%), as determined by accelerated aging germination, and mean seed yield (2,155 kg ha-1)in high vigor × high vigor crosses were higher than the high vigor × low vigor and low vigor × low vigor crosses. Mean percent accelerated aging germination rates in F2 populations from diallel crosses were significantly related to mid-parent seed vigor(r2 = 0.52**) and midparent seed size (r2 = 0.31**). These results indicated that levels of seed vigor can be improved through breeding, while maintaining high yields because of the predominance of GCA effects in both seed vigor and seed yield. Grain yields of maize in the lowland tropics are generally limited by short days and high temperatures that minimize durations of incident light. Little has been published on the effects of this limiting environment on the genetics of grain filling rate (GFR), and grain filling period (GFP) in tropical maize germplasm. This study sought to address these limitations. A set of 8 elite maize inbreds of tropical origin and their 28 diallel hybrids were grown in three seasons at Waimanalo, Hawaii, USA. Seasonal differences included > 100% differences in values of photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) during grain formation. Information was sought on the performance variations and the genotype by season interactions for GFR, GFP, days to mid-silk (DTS), kernel weight, with estimates of general (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) and their interactions with seasons. Significant differences occurred for inbreds, hybrids, and genotype by season interactions, GCA and SCA effects and their interactions with seasons, which could be attributed primarily to the differences in PAR values among seasons in Hawaii during grain filling. Additive genetic effects predominated for GFR and GFP. Breeding approaches that take advantage of additive gene effects including hybrid breeding with evaluations in multiple Hawaii seasons may be used to alter GFR and GFP.  相似文献

New sources of partial resistance to Fusarium head blight (FHB) in wheat have been identified over the past decade; however, little is known of their breeding value. A 20 parent partial diallel that included resistant genotypes from the U.S., Europe, China and South America was used to evaluate the potential of these sources of resistance as parents in wheat breeding programs. Eight plants replication−1 of each of 190 crosses and 20 parents were point-inoculated with Fusarium graminearum under greenhouse conditions in two replicated experiments. Both general (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) were significant. Most of the variance for FHB severity was associated with additive genes; however, estimates for SCA ranged from highly negative to highly positive in both resistant × resistant and resistant × susceptible crosses which suggest that improving FHB resistance through gene pyramiding strategies based on additive genetic variation may be complicated by interaction effects that condition FHB resistance.  相似文献

Wheat breeders in South Asia are attempting to develop wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars resistant to Helminthosporium leaf blight (HLB), which occurs mainly as a complex of spot blotch caused by Cochliobolus sativus (Ito & Kuribayashi) Drechs. ex Dastur, and tan spot caused by Pyrenophora tritici-repentis (Died.) Drechs. Information on the combining ability for HLB resistance in wheat cultivars of South Asia is not available. This study was undertaken to examine the resistance to HLB in nine genetically diverse wheat parents, and to evaluate their general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) effects toward determining the genetic basis of disease resistance. Nine parents were crossed in a half-diallel mating design to produce 36 populations. The F1 and F2 progenies, and the parents were evaluated in replicated field tests at Rampur, Nepal. Multiple disease scores were recorded, and area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) was calculated to measure disease severity over time. The combining ability analysis was performed using Griffing's Method 2, Model 1. The parents chosen showed wide variation for resistance to HLB. They and the F1 and F2 progenies differed significantly for AUDPC. GCA and SCA effects were significant in both generations suggesting that additive as well as non-additive genetic mechanisms were involved in the expression of resistance in these parents. Wheat genotypes 'SW89-5422', 'G 162', 'NL 781'and 'Chirya 7' had significantly negative GCA effects for AUDPC in both F1 and F2 generations, suggesting their prime suitability for use in wheat breeding programs to improve resistance to HLB. The estimate of narrow-sense heritability was 0.77 in both generations suggesting that selection for HLB resistance should be effective in these crosses. The results indicate a predominance of additive gene action in the inheritance of HLB resistance in spring wheat.  相似文献

Sorghum head bug, Calocoris angustatus Lethiery is one of the most important pests of grain sorghum in India. Head bug damage increases the severity of grain molds, which renders the grain unfit for human consumption. Therefore, we studied the gene action for resistance to head bugs and grain molds in a diverse array of male-sterile lines and testers in a line × tester mating design under natural infestation. Mean squares for parents, parents vs crosses, lines, testers, and lines × testers were significant for head bug damage and grain mold severity. General combining ability (GCA) effects were significant and negative for ICSA 88019 for head bug damage, and ICSA 88019 and ICSA 88020 for grain molds (except for ICSA 88020 in 1993). General combining ability effects were positive for ICSA 42 and 296 A. GCA effects of lines and testers for head bug damage and grain mold severity were in the same direction (+ve or −ve). Head bug damage in the grain was significantly correlated with grain mold severity. Testers IS 8891, IS 15107, and TAM 2566 (with colored grain and less susceptibility to molds) produced mold-resistant hybrids in combination with all the male-sterile lines, while the reverse was true in the case of Swarna and ICSV 112. Resistance to head bugs showed dominance to partial dominance type of gene action, while in the case of grain molds, it showed dominance to over dominance. Resistance to these pests is governed by both additive and nonadditive types of gene action. The implications of these results are discussed in relation to need for crop improvement in sorghum. 选用4份分枝型恢复系和6份雄性不育系材料作亲本,按照不完全双列杂交(NCII)设计配制24份向日葵杂交组合,对组合的小区产量、单株产量、单盘实粒数、百粒重、籽仁率、籽粒长度和籽粒宽度7个性状的亲本配合力、遗传参数及竞争优势进行分析。结果表明,24份组合的7个性状存在真实性的遗传差异。在亲本不育系一般配合力(GCA)选择的基础上,应注意组合特殊配合力(SCA)的选择,GCA效应值高的亲本育种潜力较大,组配出优势组合的概率大;籽粒长度和籽粒宽度的狭义遗传力较低,分别为7.91%和14.89%,不宜进行早代选择;GCA较高的不育系为亲本A和亲本D,其中亲本A在各性状上均为正向GCA效应值,且在供试不育系中,其GCA效应值最大,其次为亲本D;组合1×A小区产量的SCA效应值及竞争优势最高,为本试验中的最优组合,其他籽粒性状与对照相比也均有提升。  相似文献

Summary The threshing percentage (TH%) has been suggested as a selection criterion to identify the pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R.Br.) lines with improved ability to fill and set grains under water limiting conditions. In this study, eight genetically diverse pearl millet inbreds and their 28 crosses produced by half diallel crossing design were used to examine range in TH%, to evaluate general combining ability (GCA) of parents and specific combining ability (SCA) effects of crosses. The results showed significant variation among parental lines for TH%. The inbreds differed for their GCA effects and crosses for their SCA effects. Parents with high TH% and positive GCA effects were identified. The results of the study revealed that both additive and dominance components, with the preponderance of later, were important in the inheritance of TH%. Heritability in narrow sense was moderate (55%) indicating that selection for high TH% might be effective.  相似文献
