The proposal that saponins produced by the lily bog asphodel (Narthecium ossifragum) may be the direct cause of the hepatogenous photosensitization disease alveld seen in Norwegian lambs was investigated by comparing sapogenin levels in two control and two toxic pastures, and in faeces from lambs grazing the four pastures in the Halsa and Surnadal municipalities, Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. Generally similar levels of sapogenins, determined after hydrolysis of parent plant saponins, were found in Narthecium leaves collected in June/July 2001 from the two alveld outbreak areas and two nearby control areas. Differences in the median sapogenin levels determined for leaf samples in outbreak and control areas were not statistically significant. The total level of free and conjugated sapogenins in faeces recovered from the rectums of lambs grazing the outbreak and control pastures areas varied greatly. The results obtained do not support the hypothesis that a dose–response relationship exists between Narthecium saponin levels and the occurrence of alveld outbreaks.  相似文献

The acute toxicity for sheep of 3 alkaloids that occur in Phalaris acquatica was examined by intravenous and oral administration. The lowest tested dose rates that produced clinically observed signs were, for 5-methoxy dimethyltryptamine, 0.1 mg/kg body weight intravenously and 40 mg/kg orally; for gramine, 10 mg/kg intravenously and 500 mg/kg orally; and for hordenine, 20 mg/kg intravenously and 800 mg/kg orally. All induced the clinical signs observed in the nervous form of phalaris toxicity, but none induced the cardiac, sudden death, syndrome.  相似文献

Broiler chicken flocks were studied to determine the mortality from sudden death syndrome occurring in the flocks. The difference in the incidence of the syndrome in pullets and cockerels, and the age at which the most birds are affected were also studied. The weight of sudden death syndrome birds was compared with the flock average and the effect of continuous lighting as opposed to intermittent lighting was examined. The results suggest that; continuous lighting produces more sudden death syndrome deaths than intermittent lighting; that the incidence of sudden death syndrome is higher in cockerels than pullets; that the highest death rate occurred during the third and fourth weeks of life, and that sudden death syndrome birds on the average were heavier than the flock average.  相似文献

Aldicarb, an extremely toxic carbamate, caused sudden death of several lactating Holstein cows. Confirmation of this toxic agent as the cause of death was hindered by its rapid breakdown in biological tissue. Therefore, aldicarb was not detected in rumen contents of some of the dead cows, and brain acetylcholinesterase values were essentially normal. The analyses were conducted 2 to 4 days after death of the cows. Rapid testing of tissue samples is necessary if a carbamate insecticide is suspected.  相似文献

Sudden death syndrome is an economically important condition of fast-growing broiler chickens in which death occurs suddenly with a short, wing-beating convulsion. Gross or histological lesions are not present. Relative weights of internal organs from broilers dead from sudden death syndrome were compared to those of normal broilers to determine differences that might confirm a diagnosis of sudden death syndrome. Relative weights of lung, heart, liver, and intestine from normal broilers were determined at 9, 21, 30 and 42 days of age at various intervals after death. Organ weights stabilized approximately two hours postmortem and relative organ weight declined with age. A diagnosis of sudden death syndrome could not be made on the basis of relative organ weight.  相似文献

The clinical signs displayed by 96 sheep affected by the nervous syndrome of Phalaris aquatica toxicity and 10 normal sheep injected intravenously with the phalaris alkaloid, 5-methoxy dimethyltryptamine (dose range 0.01 to 5.0 mg/kg), were observed. The distributions of phalaris indole-like cytoplasmic pigments in nuclei of the brains and spinal cords of 9 naturally affected sheep were determined microscopically. Based on the relationship between clinical signs and the central nervous system nuclei involved in their production, the distribution of phalaris indole-like pigments, and the pharmacology of dimethylated tryptamines, it is suggested that the nervous syndrome induced by Phalaris aquatica results from a direct action of phalaris alkaloids upon serotonergic receptors in specific brain and spinal cord nuclei.  相似文献

For the first time Bluetongue (BT) has been diagnosed in the Netherlands. The clinical symptoms of BT on five farms during the first outbreak ever in the Netherlands are described. Fever and swollen sensitive coronets leading to reluctance to stand and walk were sometimes the first symptoms. Later lesions in the mouth occurred with foamy salivation and respiratory problems. In other cases a swollen head with swollen lips and foamy salivation were the first clinical signs. Also sudden death occurred. In the first sixteen confirmed cases morbidity and mortality were lower than described in outbreaks in other countries. Good collaboration between practitioners, specialists of the Animal Health Service (GD-Deventer), and specialists of the Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (VWA) and CIDC-Lelystad (Wageningen UR) led to a rapid notification and ultimately confirmation of the suspected diagnosis BT.  相似文献

A syndrome in cattle of diarrhoea and death associated with enteric Yersinia pseudotuberculosis infection is described. Outbreaks occurred during winter and early spring in adult cattle grazing pastures waterlogged by recent flooding or persistent heavy rain. Antibiotic therapy was effective early in the course of the syndrome. At necropsy there was severe acute enterocolitis, and bacteria consistent with Y. pseudotuberculosis were observed in the lesions. This organism could usually be isolated from the intestines of affected animals but was recovered less often from other organs. Representative isolates were identified as Y. pseudotuberculosis serotype III. The association of this syndrome with waterlogged pastures and low temperatures suggests that these conditions favour transmission of Y. pseudotuberculosis infection in cattle. The role of Y. pseudotuberculosis as primary pathogen requires confirmation.  相似文献

An outbreak of amaurosis and paresis was observed amongst sheep, and occasionally cattle, which had been grazing on pastures consisting mainly of Helichrysum argyrosphaerum DC. A similar syndrome was produced by feeding the suspect plant to sheep, thereby providing proof if its toxicity. Although none of the sheep became blind and only one developed paralysis, typical sponly lesions were detected in the brains and optic fasciculi of all the experimental animals. The lesion had specific predilection sites, such as the white matter around the lateral ventricles, the optic tracts plus chiasm, the pyramidal tracts and the brachium pontis. Enlargement of the optic fasciculi furthermore gave rise to malacia, papilloedema and retinal changes. Some aged sheep developed cataracts approximately 2-3 months after the initial outbreaks of amaurosis had occurred. Circumstantial and histopathological evidence suggests that the cataracts may be due to chronic Helichrysum poisoning, but this could not confirmed in the present investigation.  相似文献

Superphosphate poisoning is typically a disease of pregnant and lactating ewes under nutritional stress. Poisoning has been observed only in the late winter and spring. Most episodes occurred when hungry sheep were forced to graze short pastures top-dressed within one week prior to the onset of clinical signs. Fine weather which is favourable for the application of fertiliser also favours the occurrence of poisoning. Clinical signs include anorexia, thirst, diarrhoea, weakness and incoordination. Death usually occurs within 48 hours of the onset of clinical signs. In some outbreaks the presenting signs are those of hypocalcaemia but response to calcium therapy is transient. Poisoning results in a toxic tubular nephritis and uraemia. No satisfactory treatment can be suggested but poisoning can be prevented by avoiding exposure of sheep to top-dressed pastures.  相似文献

The occurrence of a suspected mixed ammonia and nitrate fertiliser poisoning that led to acute illness and fatalities in cattle is described. The circumstances leading to the incident included the method of application of the fertiliser, low rainfall and the absence of subsequent irrigation of the fertilised pastures. The clinical and gross post mortem findings, principally dehydration and fluid distension of the rumen, were not pathognomonic. The complex of nitrate, nitrite and ammonia toxicity is discussed.  相似文献

Twenty-six cows died after accidental exposure to boron fertilizer. Cows developed diarrhea, weakness, ataxia, signs of depression, and died, usually within a few hours. Seizure-like behavior was noticed in 2 cows, and 2 were suspected of aborting. High boron concentrations in tissues from affected cows confirmed ingestion of an appreciable amount of boron fertilizer. In an attempt to confirm the diagnosis of boron poisoning, boron fertilizer was administered to goats. A kid goat given 3.6 g of fertilizer/kg of body weight developed clinical signs similar to those seen in the cattle. Boron compounds such as sodium borate and boric acid have been considered generally nontoxic, and reports of livestock toxicosis are uncommon. This case report suggests that these compounds may be palatable under certain circumstances leading to ingestion of toxic quantities.  相似文献

Outbreaks of proliferative haemorrhagic enteropathy on two pig farms   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
SUMMARY Clinical signs of proliferative haemorrhagic enteropathy (PHE) including anaemia, dysentery and sudden death were observed in finisher pigs and young breeding stock on 2 farms. On farm A, PHE occurred 12 months after repopulation of the farm. Other outbreaks of PHE occurred after the withdrawal of therapeutic concentrations of in-feed antibacterial agents (farm A), or after monensin sodium (100 g/t) replaced olaquindox (100 g/t) in feed (farm B). The outbreaks, the possible sources of contamination and the role of antibacterial feed additives in the treatment and control of PHE are described.  相似文献

Five Holstein cows developed a sudden clinical syndrome of ataxia, muscle tremors, recumbency, and bloody diarrhea. The pond where these cows obtained water contained a near pure culture of Microcystis aeruginosa, a toxic blue-green algae. All cows affected were treated with activated charcoal, procaine penicillin, glucose, and calcium and magnesium gluconate. All 5 cows were clinically normal ten days later. Many practicing veterinarians regard blue-green algae toxicosis as a rare syndrome that results in rapid death for consuming animals; however, this toxicosis may be common and not lethal. Because no diagnostic test is available for blue-green algae toxicosis, this condition rarely is diagnosed.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To identify factors associated with abortions during early gestation classified as mare reproductive loss syndrome (MRLS). DESIGN: Case-control study. ANIMALS: 324 broodmares from 43 farms in central Kentucky, including 121 mares from 25 farms that had early-term abortions (ETAs) associated with MRLS (case horses), 120 mares from the same farms but that did not abort, and 83 mares from 18 farms that were not severely Impacted by MRLS. PROCEDURE: Farm managers were interviewed to obtain data on various management practices and environmental exposures for the mares. Data for case and control horses were compared to identify risk factors for mares having MRLS-associated ETAs. RESULTS: Several factors increased the risk of MRLS-associated ETAs, including feeding hay in pasture, greater than usual amounts of white clover in pastures, more eastern tent caterpillars in pastures, abortion during a previous pregnancy, and sighting deer or elk on the premises. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Analysis indicates that certain characteristics of pastures predisposed mares to MRLS-associated ETAs. Methods for limiting exposure to pasture (keeping mares in stalls longer) during environmental conditions similar to those of 2001 (ie, sudden freezing in mid-April following warmer-than-usual springtime temperatures and larger-than-usual numbers of eastern tent caterpillars in and around pastures) should reduce the risk of mares having MRLS-associated ETAs. It was not possible to determine whether exposure to white clover or caterpillars were causal factors for MRLS or were merely indicators of unusual environmental conditions that resulted in exposure of mares to a toxic or infectious agent.  相似文献

Ten cases of sudden drop in egg production were investigated. All outbreaks occurred between April and October. In 4 cases infectious bronchitis was diagnosed. One case each was attributed to infectious laryngotracheitis, avian monocytosis, fowl cholera, cage layer fatigue, and fatty liver haemorrhagic syndrome. One case remained undiagnosed.

The results indicate that infectious bronchitis is likely to be the most important single disease responsible for the sudden drop in egg production syndrome but that a variety of other infectious and metabolic disease may also be implicated.  相似文献

A total of 351 single-suckled beef calves were blood sampled at twice-weekly intervals for the first two and a half weeks of life. Twenty three of them died, 13 of a syndrome characterised by acute collapse and 10 of diarrhoea which had persisted for several days before death. Those which died acutely showed a sudden terminal rise in blood levels of potassium, magnesium, inorganic phosphate and total protein. Those which died after several days of diarrhoea showed a more gradual increase in blood chloride and urea concentrations and in packed cell volume values. It is suggested that these changes indicate a difference in the pathogenesis of the two situations. Calves which died had lower blood glucose levels before the onset of clinical signs than those which survived. It is suggested that this may have been a contributory factor in their mortality.  相似文献
