A workshop was held at Onderstepoort to set priorities in veterinary helminthology for South Africa. Representatives from 19 organisations attended. The workshop achieved 2 of the 3 aims set, namely to identify the problems within the field and to develop strategies to address these challenges. The 7 strategies proposed are: motivation, education, therapeutic, worm resistance, animal tolerance, biological control and diagnostic strategies. A follow-up session is being planned to formulate action plans for each sphere.  相似文献

This paper explores the views of those in the Irish equine industry, organisations and government regarding necessary improvements to equine welfare in Ireland at unregulated gatherings and during the disposal process. Three qualitative research methods were employed, namely semistructured interviews, focus groups and a structured, facilitated workshop. Representatives from industry, welfare societies, socially disadvantaged groupings and government engaged with this process and shared their views regarding horse welfare and implementable solutions with merit to address welfare problems. A consensus was achieved that equine welfare in Ireland could be improved by the development of a comprehensive identification system, a Code of Practice for horse gatherings, a horse licensing scheme, ring-fenced funding to promote responsible, humane horse disposal and better means of raising awareness of the value of safeguarding horse welfare for the benefit of all parties.  相似文献

牧户作为三江源区自然资源利用的决策主体,研究其生计策略对于当地的生态保护具有重要意义。根据分层随机抽样的第一手调查资料,将牧户生计策略划分为纯牧型和多样型,运用二元Logistic模型实证分析了影响牧户生计策略选择的关键生计资本指标。结果表明:1)不同生计策略牧户的生计资本状况呈现出明显的差异,多样型牧户的生计资本状况优于纯牧户;2)草地面积、住房质量、家庭年收入、亲友圈是否有人担任干部和居住地到最近集市的距离,是影响三江源区牧户生计策略选择关键生计资本指标;3)三江源区牧户的生计活动方式和收入结构总体单一,即使是多样型牧户也并未脱离放牧为主的生计活动。以上述关键生计资本指标作为突破口,积极合理引导牧户选择有利于生态保护的生计策略或是今后三江源区生态环境改善的新方向。  相似文献

脂肪组织是构成动物胴体及肉品的重要组分,动物不同部位的脂肪沉积直接影响其胴体品质和肉品质。脂肪沉积的增加有两种途径:一是脂肪细胞数量的增加,即脂肪生成(adipogenesis);二是脂肪细胞体积增大,即肥大(hypertrophy)。血管内皮生长因子(vascular endothelial growth factor, VEGF)是调控血管和淋巴管生成的最重要因子之一。近年的研究发现,VEGF-A/B与机体脂肪沉积密切相关。因此,本文综述了VEGF-A/B及其受体对脂肪生成、代谢和沉积的调控作用研究进展,并对其在动物生产上的应用进行了展望,为研发调控动物不同部位脂肪沉积、提高动物胴体品质和肉品质的营养调控技术提供新的思路和科学依据。  相似文献

Three projects recently funded by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) through the National Commission on Veterinary Economic Issues (NCVEI) focused on the veterinary school applicant pool, leadership skills in the veterinary profession, and a veterinary teaching hospital business model, respectively. The Skills, Knowledge, Aptitude, and Attitude (SKAs) Colloquium was designed to present the results of these three projects, to discuss their importance for the future of the veterinary profession, and to develop action plans accordingly. In all, 24 veterinary colleges were represented at the workshop and a total of 72 attendees participated, achieving a broad representation of the veterinary profession ( both academic and non-academic). Through an orchestrated combination of general sessions and facilitated small group discussions, recommendations for implementation and initial action plans for next steps were developed. From these, a list of potential AAVMC follow-up activities was developed, including advocating and facilitating programs across schools to engage and educate faculty regarding the results of these projects; developing realistic information on careers in veterinary medicine; organizing an AAVMC leadership consortium; working toward further development and implementation of the veterinary teaching hospital (VTH) business model; coordinating and sponsoring a national forum on the future of the VTH; reviewing admissions processes; integrating leadership into veterinary curricula; and organizing opportunities for faculty development in leadership.  相似文献

A total of 27 monoclonal antibodies raised to human targets were included in the present Pig CD workshop. 14 of these had been tested in previous workshops and had been reported as cross-reactive, a further 13 had been reported as cross-reactive during the Human Leukocyte Differentiation Antigens Workshop VI (HLDA VI) and/or by the donor (a commercial company submitting these mAb for validation by the workshop community). Of the 27 antibodies, three antibodies with previously reported reactivity for pig cells were eliminated from the workshop following preliminary tests due to lack of reactivity. Nine antibodies, although initially positive, gave inconsistent results during the course of the workshop. We found consistent reactivity for 15 antibodies. However, the cellular distribution of the target molecules on pig and human cells was shown to be different for three of these antibodies. These findings have important implications for the usefulness of these antibodies as research tools in the pig.  相似文献

Twenty-six monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) selected after the first round of analysis in the Third International Swine Workshop were grouped with additional mAbs from the first and second workshops and mAbs under study for further evaluation. Preparations of peripheral blood leukocytes were used in single and multicolor flow cytometric (FC) analyses. Six mAbs did not react with gammadelta T-cells. Two were negative for all tested specificities. Seven mAbs recognized molecules expressed on gammadelta T-cells that were not lineage restricted. One of these from the first workshop (2B11) yielded a pattern of labeling identical to a mAb under study (PGB73A). Ten mAbs were characterized in previous workshops and known to react with the gammadelta TCR or molecules expressed on subsets of gammadelta T-cells. One belonged to SWC4, two to SWC5, and one to SWC6. Two mAbs from the second workshop recognized a molecule or molecules expressed on subsets of gammadelta T-cells. A new mAb (PPT16) added late to the workshop following a request by the workshop chairs appeared to recognize a determinant expressed on the gammadelta TCR/CD3 molecular complex.  相似文献

The 14 mAbs representing workshop cluster 1 recognise a 215/300 kDa antigen expressed on a subpopulation of lymphocytes which express low levels of CD5 but are negative for other B and T cell markers defined by workshop antibodies. Separate studies with cDNA probes for bovine CD3 and T cell receptor indicate that these lymphocytes are gamma/delta T cells. It is of note that the different mAbs react with varying proportions of this cell population, suggesting that the antigen undergoes considerable post-translational modification. A further two mAbs, designated workshop cluster 2, react with a 37/47 kDa heterodimeric molecule expressed in a subpopulation of the WC1+ cells and on an additional small population of T lymphocytes. The cell populations recognised by the two mAbs are different although they overlap in some animals. It is suggested that these mAbs may be specific for T cell receptor molecules.  相似文献

A workshop to produce recommendations on training requirements for improved epidemiosurveillance of livestock diseases in southern Africa was organised at the Department of Veterinary Tropical Diseases in the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Pretoria. It was attended by 23 persons representing 10 different southern African countries. The majority of the participants were actively involved in veterinary epidemiosurveillance and many of them were members of the SADC Epidemiology and Informatics Subcommittee. Discussions focused on (i) epidemiosurveillance networks and their 2 main components, i.e. (ii) diagnosis and (iii) information flow. The debates were guided by 3 questions; (i) what are the requirements for an effective network, (ii) what cannot be achieved with existing capacity and (iii) how can the current capacity be improved. Workshop participants developed lists of realistic capacity building needs, which were divided into structural needs and training requirements. Structural needs mainly concerned communication means and quality assurance. With regard to training, the need for appropriate continuing education of all actors at the various disease management levels (non-professional, para-professional, professional) was expressed. Special emphasis was put on capacity building at the lowest level, i.e. the livestock owner and the para-professionals at the community level. At the international level, it was felt that special emphasis should be put on building capacity to improve the understanding of international agreements on trade in animals and animal products and to improve the capacity of negotiating such agreements.  相似文献

The social and ecological contexts for rangeland management are changing rapidly, prompting a reevaluation of science, management, and their relationship. We argue that progression from steady-state management to ecosystem management has served the rangeland profession well, but that further development toward resilience-based management is required to ensure that ecosystem services are sustained in an era of rapid change. Resilience-based management embraces the inevitability of change and emphasizes that management should seek to guide change to benefit society. The objectives of this forum are to: 1) justify the need for adopting resilience-based management, 2) identify the challenges that will be encountered in its development and implementation, and 3) highlight approaches to overcoming these challenges. Five grand challenges confronting the adoption of resilience-based management, based upon the insights of 56 rangeland researchers who have contributed to this special issue, were identified as: 1) development of knowledge systems to support resilience-based management, 2) improvement of ecological models supporting science and management, 3) protocols to assess and manage tradeoffs among ecosystem services, 4) use of social-ecological system models to integrate diverse knowledge sources, and 5) reorganization of institutions to support resilience-based management. Resolving the challenges presented here will require the creation of stronger partnerships between ecosystem managers, science organizations, management agencies, and policymakers at local, regional, and national scales. A realistic near-term goal for achieving such partnerships is to initiate and support collaborative landscape projects. The creation of multiscaled social learning institutions linked to evolving knowledge systems may be the best approach to guide adaptation and transformation in rangelands in the coming century.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To report clinical evaluation of third carpal bone (C3) frontal plane slab fracture repair with the Acutrak screw system. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective case series. SAMPLE POPULATION: Racing Thoroughbreds (n=17) with frontal C3 slab fractures. METHODS: C3 slab fractures in Thoroughbred racehorses (1999-2004) were repaired by use of the Acutrak screw system. Data collected were (1) preoperative variables--gender, age at injury, limb involved, injury occurrence, fracture thickness, complexity, and displacement, race starts and earnings and (2) postoperative variables were: surgical complications, days to first start, race starts, and earnings. A Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to compare pre- and postoperative starts and earnings; significance was set at P<.05. RESULTS: Seventeen Thoroughbred racehorses (12 females, 3 males, 2 geldings) were enrolled. Mean (+/-SD) age at injury was 3.3+/-1.0 years. Right carpi (10) were affected more than left (7). Ten injuries occurred during training, 7 during racing. Twelve of 15 horses that raced before injury returned to racing. Average days to first start was 349.3+/-153.9 days. Horses that returned to racing had more starts after repair (median, 6.5 versus 3.5; P=.04) and did not have decreased earnings per start (median, $2452 versus $3061; P=.30). CONCLUSION: The Acutrak screw system is a useful repair technique for frontal C3 slab fractures in Thoroughbred racehorses. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Adequate reduction and stability of C3 slab fractures can be achieved with the Acutrak screw system, decreasing the likelihood of fragment splitting and screw head impingement on carpal soft tissues.  相似文献

The article looks at the legal situation concerning the permission for commercial activities with animals due to Article 11 par. 1 no.3 (d) of the German Animal Welfare Act, in particular in combination with activities at changing places. Regardingly the German legislator has recently (especially since 1998) started to approach the problems of animal welfare by adopting specific regulations, e. g. by enacting an obligation to inform the authority of the planned change of place of activity. Currently the legislator discusses an extension of the enabling act for an ordinance by the Federal Government on the central register for circusses. Standardized data collection and transmission shall contribute to an effective control of the companies' compliance with animal welfare law. Article 11 par. 2a of the German Animal Welfare Act is an important regulation concerning activities at changing places. It allows to combine the permission with time limits, conditions and impositions of duties. Such collateral clauses can be set down to keep an animal stock book or--in a wider sense--a documentation of the company's activities to guarantee an effective control by the authority. In the case of American rodeo shows it is to mention that collateral clauses to introduce more animal welfare are imposed by the local authorities responsible for the area where the shows will take place rather than by the authority which actually has given the permission. The authorities have to distinguish subsequent collateral clauses or directives on one hand and the revocation of the permission on the other hand, since in this case the requirements are more strict. The recent preliminary judicial decisions of the administrative courts concerning this legal problem are contradictory so that they cannot serve as a guideline for the authorities.  相似文献

The aim of the Second International Swine Cluster of Differentiation (CD) Workshop, supported by the Veterinary Immunology Committee (VIC) of the International Union of Immunological Societies (IUIS), was to standardize the assignment of monoclonal antibodies (mAb) reactive with porcine leukocyte differentiation antigens and to define new antibody clusters. At the summary meeting of the workshop in July, 1995, revisions in the existing nomenclature for Swine CD were approved, so that the rules are now in accord with those for human and ruminant CD. Swine CD numbers will now be given to clusters of mAb to swine orthologues of human CD molecules when homology is proven by (1) suitable tissue distribution and lymphoid cell subset expression, (2) appropriate molecular mass of the antigen recognized by the mAbs, and (3) reactivity of mAbs with the cloned swine gene products, or cross-reactivity of the mAb on the human gene products. In some cases, this reactivity would not be fully proven, mainly due to the lack of cloned gene products; for these CD antigens, the respective clusters will be assigned by the prefix ‘w' which will lead to ‘wCD' antigens. As a result of the Second International Swine CD Workshop the assignment of 16 mAb to existing CD groups (CD2a, CD4a, CD5a, wCD6, wCD8, CD14, CD18a, wCD21, wCD25) was confirmed, and 2 mAb to existing swine workshop clusters (SWC). More importantly, for the work on the porcine immune system, was the definition of 5 new swine CD antigens, namely CD3 (recognized by 6 new mAb and 3 epitopes), CD16 (1 new mAb), wCD29 (2 mAb), CD45RA (3 mAb) and CD45RC (1 new mAb). Finally, the demarcation of two new SWC molecules in swine, SWC8 (2 mAb) and SWC9 (2 mAb) was confirmed.  相似文献

Growth curve analysis is an important issue for many agricultural and laboratory species, for both phenotypic and genetic studies. The aim of this paper is to present the use of a novel statistical approach, namely the structured antedependence (SAD) models, to deal with this issue. The basic idea of these models is that an observation at time t can be explained by the previous observations. These models are especially appropriate to deal with cumulative traits such as growth, as BW at age t clearly depends on BW measures at ages (t -1), (t -2), etc. These models were applied on an INRA experimental Charolais herd data set. The data comprised BW records for 560 cows born over an 11-yr period (from 1988 to 1998) from 60 sires and 369 dams. The proposed SAD models were compared with the well-known random regression (RR) models that are already widely used in various areas of longitudinal data analysis. It was found that the SAD models fit the growth process better with far fewer parameters than the RR models (9 instead of 16 covariance parameters for the phenotypic analysis, and 14 instead of 21 for the genetic analysis). Despite this smaller number of covariance parameters, the likelihood value was found to be much higher with the SAD vs. the RR models, with a difference of 262.9 for the phenotypic analysis with a quartic polynomial for the RR and 751.5 for the genetic analysis with a cubic polynomial for both the genetic and environmental parts of the RR model. The SAD models also proved to be better able to interpolate missing values. Heritability, genetic, and environmental correlation coefficients were estimated for weights from birth to adulthood. The structured antedependence models proved, in this study, to be very appropriate to model growth data in a parsimonious and flexible way.  相似文献

Characterization of cytochrome P450-mediated drug metabolism in cats   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1  
In this study we examined activities of cytochrome P450 (CYP)1A, 2C, 2D and 3A using hepatic microsomes from five male and five female cats. CYP1A, 2C, 2D and 3A activities were referred by ethoxyresorufin O-deethylation (EROD), tolbutamide hydroxylation (TBH), bufuralol 1'-hydroxylation (BLH) and midazolam 1'- and 4-hydroxylation respectively. The anti-rat CYP1A2 and CYP3A2 serum significantly inhibited EROD and midazolam 1'- and 4-hydroxylation, suggesting that EROD and midazolam 1'- and 4-hydroxylation were catalysed by CYP1A and 3A in cats respectively. Quinidine inhibited BLH in cats microsomes at quite low concentrations, suggesting that BLH was catalysed by CYP2D in cats. Tolbutamide hydroxylation activities were negligible in hepatic microsomes from both male and female cats, suggesting CYP2C activities of cats are extremely low. This suggests that CYP2C substrates should be carefully administered to cats. Although there is no sexual difference in CYP1A activities, there are differences in CYP2D and 3A activities of cats. CYP2D activities were higher (3-fold), but CYP3A activities were lower (one-fifth) in female cats. These results might suggest that CYP2D and 3A substrates should be prescribed for male and female cats using different dosage regimen.  相似文献

The National Commission on Veterinary Economic Issues (NCVEI) is working to enhance the non-technical skills, knowledge, aptitudes, and attitudes (SKAs) of veterinarians. This report describes the development of an innovative model for teaching the principles of financial management as they apply to the veterinary practice. Zodiak: The Game of Business Finance and Strategy is a "business literacy" game in which players work together in small teams (generally four people) to run a fictional multi-million-dollar company called Zodiak Industries for three "years" in order to learn principles of business finance and strategy. After finishing the 4.5-hour game, participants spend the rest of the workshop making the right "Connections"-exercises designed to connect what they have learned to business strategies, financial statements, and operational tactics drawn from veterinary practice. Issues addressed for the veterinary practice, with parallels drawn to Zodiak, included return on owner investment in a veterinary practice (vs. salary drawn by owner veterinarians); pricing (setting prices, price elasticity of demand, and relationships between volume, quality, and price); human resources and operations management as they relate to profitability and efficiency; cash flow and management of accounts receivable; and commonly used financial benchmarks. Workshop venues have included Michigan State University, The Ohio State University, the University of Illinois, and Purdue University. Financial and in-kind support were provided through partnership with Pharmacia Animal Health (now Pfizer Animal Health) and Hill's Pet Nutrition, Inc. Through course evaluations, participants generally rated the workshop high as an educational experience and indicated that the most important things learned were related to financial management (principles, terminology, and methods). The most enjoyable aspects of the workshop tended to be group discussions, teamwork, the dynamic/interactive environment, and the "game" atmosphere. Based on these experiences, the Zodiak workshop provides a useful model for teaching career development and practice management topics to veterinary students. The business simulation in a workshop format was especially useful for teaching these "non-mainstream" topics, as traditional classroom lecture approaches might not have engaged students sufficiently to achieve effective learning. In addition, the partnership developed between academia and industry offered substantial benefits to both parties. Similar educational approaches should be considered for additional aspects of the non-technical SKAs.  相似文献

A new phage set was proposed for the typing of coagulase-positive staphylococci from chickens. The set was composed of 16 phages isolated from lysogenic staphylococci from chickens and 3 adapted phages derived from the international phage set. These phages were classified into 4 groups (I, II, III and IV) according to their host ranges. The 19 phages were used for typing 569 coagulase-positive staphylococci; 94.2% of the isolates were lysed by 1 or more phages, 88.0% at a routine test dilution, and 6.25% only at a routine test dilution X 100. The reacting ability of the phages seemed to be limited to staphylococci from chickens. It was proved that the phages were more accurate than the international phage set in typing staphylococci isolated from chicken in Japan.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to develop and investigate selection strategies that aim at maximizing long-term genetic response while conserving gene diversity and controlling inbreeding in populations of limited effective size, assuming complete knowledge of all genes affecting a quantitative trait. Three selection strategies were proposed to select on 100 quantitative trait loci (QTL) and compared with truncation selection on breeding value. Alternative selection strategies aimed at maximizing the average breeding value of parents with a penalty on (1) the number of unfavourable QTL genotypes among parents (OS-I), (2) the negative of the logarithm of the frequency of the favourable allele at each QTL among parents (OS-II), and (3) the average pedigree relationship among parents (OS-III). When all QTL and their effects were known, the strategies examined were able to obtain extra long-term responses, conserve QTL diversity and reduce inbreeding, compared with truncation selection. Strategy OS-II was the most effective in conserving QTL diversity and OS-III in reducing inbreeding. By changing the magnitude of the penalties applied, the impact on long-term response, inbreeding and diversity can be controlled. Extra long-term responses over truncation selection of OS-I and OS-II were even greater when effects of QTL were estimated rather than assumed known, indicating the applicability of results to practical strategies for marker-assisted selection. Extra responses are expected to be reduced for larger population sizes.  相似文献

This investigation aims to classify, describe and evaluate the sustainability of dairy goat production systems (GPS) in South Spain Sierra de Cadiz. The research took place throughout 25 goat farms during the 2001–2002 campaigns, with the method posed by Masera et al. (1999) [Masera, O., Astier, M., S., López-Ridaura. 1999. Sustentabilidad y manejo de recursos naturales. El marco de evaluación MESMIS (Sustainability and natural resource management. The MESMIS evaluation framework). Mundi-Prensa, S.A., Gira, IE-UNAM, México. 109 pp.] and adapted to animal production systems, as the guideline and framework to evaluate sustainability.

The principal component, namely energy input from grazing (eigenvalue 1.329) which comprises the indicators total area per goat (factorial value 0.664) together with net energy obtained from grazing (factorial value 0.903) allowed to differentiate significantly between semi extensive (SES), semi intensive (SIS) and intensive (IS) goat production systems.

Intensification of the GPS tends to be inefficient, especially in terms of net margin per litre of milk produced (p < 0.05). A higher degree of adaptability of IS (64.8%) derives from a higher investment on new production strategies. Likewise, higher self-management capacity of SES (60.9%) fosters standards of productivity (76.0%) and stability (42.9%). The SIS presented the highest equity values (67.8%).

On the whole, sustainability of GPS tends to decrease as the degree of intensification increases: SES = 57.3%; SIS = 55.7% and IS = 53.1%. The reduction of the dependency on external input alongside with the optimization of natural resources management would surely improve the standard of sustainability.  相似文献

There remains a great need for the development of reagents and techniques to study immune regulation in ruminants. These tools are fundamental to our understanding of the mechanisms of immune modulation and underpin the rational design of disease control strategies in livestock. Technological advances in molecular biology have resulted in the development of a new range of techniques to measure and quantify gene expression in normal and disease states. However, the ability to measure protein expression, produce proteins (usually in recombinant form) and to block receptor-ligand interactions remains essential for elucidating the function of the molecules of interest. The aims of this workshop were to look at the current status of reagents for studying ruminant immunology, the prospects for future developments, and also to discuss reagents availability between different groups worldwide.  相似文献
