OBJECTIVE: To review surgical techniques and postoperative complications associated with correction of patellar luxation in dogs. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: Dogs (n = 109) with patellar luxation (n = 131). METHODS: Medical records of dogs that had corrective surgery for patellar luxation were reviewed. Signalment, history, grade and direction of patellar luxation, operative technique and clinical outcomes were retrieved. RESULTS: Overall frequency of postoperative complications was 18%. Frequency of major (requiring revision surgery) complications was 13%. Frequency of patellar reluxation was 8%. Frequency of overall, major, and patellar reluxation complications was higher for dogs weighing > or =20 kg compared with those <20 kg. Frequency of overall and major complications was higher for dogs with higher grades of patellar luxation. Femoral trochlear sulcoplasty resulted in lower frequency of patellar reluxation. Tibial tuberosity transposition (TTT) resulted in lower frequency of major complications and patellar reluxation. Retinacular/capsular release resulted in higher frequency of major complications. Patient age, gender, medial versus lateral patellar luxation, left versus right hindlimb, capsular/retinacular imbrication, use of anti-rotational sutures, and whether stifle surgery had been performed previously did not significantly influence frequency of complications. CONCLUSION: TTT and femoral trochlear sulcoplasty minimize the risk of postoperative patellar reluxation and major complications. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Information derived from this study can be used to estimate the likelihood of postoperative complications for canine patients undergoing corrective surgery for patellar luxation. 相似文献

Leiomyomas are the most common of uterine tumours in mares but large tumours are rare. A case with a 15 cm uterine leiomyoma diagnosed by rectal palpation and ultrasound examinations with apparent adverse effects on fertility is reported. Management of the case was by hand assisted laparoscopic tumour removal and unilateral ovariectomy. Complications included post operative pain, tachycardia and wound infection. The mare was confirmed to be in foal after her first cover post surgery. 相似文献

The cardiopulmonary effects of capnoperitoneum were investigated in 8 spontaneously breathing, young adult female cats undergoing laparoscopic pancreatic biopsy (intra-abdominal pressure 12 mmHg). Cats were premedicated with acepromazine and hydromorphone, induced with ketamine and diazepam, and maintained using an end-tidal isoflurane concentration of 1.13% in 100% oxygen. Direct systemic arterial blood pressure, heart and respiratory rates, end-tidal carbon dioxide (CO(2)), and isoflurane were recorded every 5 min before insufflation (baseline), during insufflation of the abdomen with CO(2), and following desufflation. Arterial blood samples were drawn at baseline, at 10 and 30 min of insufflation, and 5 min after desufflation for blood gases. The significant findings (P < 0.05) were as follows: insufflation produced an increase in heart rate (5 to 15 min and at 30 min), mean arterial blood pressure (25 to 30 min), and diastolic arterial blood pressure (10 to 30 min). After desufflation, respiratory rate increased for 15 min. The changes were within physiologically acceptable limits in these healthy, anesthetized cats despite no artificial maintenance of minute ventilation. 相似文献

The intravenous administration of fluids is one of the most important aspects of patient care in hospitalized animals. Intravenous fluids are administered to replace or prevent dehydration, treat hypovolemic shock and intravascular volume depletion, correct acid-base and electrolyte abnormalities, and maintain vascular access for administration of drugs, blood product components, and parenteral nutrition. Intravenous catheterization also can provide a means of blood sample collection, thus avoiding frequent and uncomfortable venipunctures in critically ill animals. Although the benefits of intravenous catheterization and fluid administration are numerous, inherent risks are associated with the procedures, and care must be taken to avoid potential complications. 相似文献

Complications associated with ESF can deleteriously affect soft tissue and bone healing. Adherence to proper surgical techniques and guidelines will minimize development of ESF-related complications. The most common problems associated with ESF are pin tract infections, fixator problems, and soft tissue impalement. These complications can be avoided by using proper pin insertion techniques that reduce skin tension; pin-bone, pin-skin motion; and soft tissue trauma. In addition, proper selection of pins (size, threaded or smooth), fixator configuration, ancillary implants, and a cancellous bone graft further reduce the risk of complications and inadequate healing. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of prolonged anesthesia with desflurane in dogs undergoing laparotomy or abdominal laparoscopy. DESIGN: Randomized prospective study. ANIMALS: 20 adult mixed-breed dogs. PROCEDURE: Dogs were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 groups with 10 dogs/group. Anesthesia was induced with propofol and maintained with desflurane and fentanyl, and pyloroplasty was performed. In 10 dogs, a ventral midline laparotomy was performed; in the other 10, abdominal laparoscopy was performed. Dogs were monitored for cardiovascular and respiratory responses (ECG, oxygen saturation [SpO2], arterial blood pressure, rectal temperature, end-tidal partial pressure of carbon dioxide [PETCO2], and expired desflurane concentration). Recovery times were recorded. RESULTS: Mean +/- SD duration of anesthesia was 201 +/- 25 minutes for dogs undergoing laparotomy and 287 +/- 15 minutes for dogs undergoing laparoscopy. Anesthesia was accompanied by hypotension that was less severe in dogs undergoing laparoscopy. Heart rate did not vary significantly during anesthesia. The SpO2 was > 97% in all dogs at all times, and PETCO2 remained within reference limits. Recovery times for dogs that underwent laparotomy were not significantly different from those for dogs that underwent laparoscopy. Mean +/- SD time to standing was 13.6 +/- 2.4 minutes for dogs that underwent laparotomy and 12.5 +/- 2.9 minutes for dogs that underwent laparoscopy. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggest that induction of anesthesia with propofol and maintenance with desflurane and fentanyl is safe in dogs undergoing abdominal surgery. 相似文献

Objective— To report complications associated with orthopedic surgery in alpacas and llamas.
Study Design— Retrospective study.
Animals— Alpacas (n=18) and llamas (n=6) that orthopedic surgery using internal or external fixation.
Methods— Medical records (January 2000–December 2006) and radiographs were reviewed and owners contacted for follow-up information for alpacas and llamas that had orthopedic surgery involving internal or external fixation. Fourteen camelids had internal fixation, 7 had external fixation, and 3 had a combination of internal and external fixation.
Results— Twenty-two animals (92%) were discharged after surgery (mean hospitalization, 15 days). Of 20 animals with ≥1 year follow-up information, 18 were alive (82%). Postoperative complications related to fracture healing, infection, soft tissue structures, or joints occurred in 21 camelids (87%). Thirteen animals returned to their intended use, 4 animals returned to breeding but not their intended use, 4 were euthanatized, and 3 were only able to be used as pets.
Conclusions— Fixation type (internal, external) did not have any significant effect on complications involving fracture healing, infection, soft tissue structures, or chronic lameness. Camelids with open fractures were more likely to have complications associated with fracture healing, repair, and infection than closed fractures.
Clinical Relevance— Complications after orthopedic surgery in alpacas and llamas are more common than previously reported and may result in chronic lameness or prevent return to their intended use. 相似文献

Cardiorespiratory and blood gas alterations were evaluated in 6 healthy dogs that underwent a laparoscopic procedure using isoflurane anesthesia and carbon dioxide (CO(2)) pneumoperitoneum for 30 min. Heart rate, respiratory rate, body temperature, venous blood pH, partial pressure of CO(2) and oxygen, oxygen saturation, total carbon dioxide (TCO(2)) and bicarbonate were monitored. Significant alterations were hypercapnia, hypoventilation, and respiratory acidosis. 相似文献

This retrospective study was initiated to identify complications of anaesthesia occurring during ocular surgery. Records of 74 horses anaesthetised for eye enucleation, 65 horses anaesthetised for surgery of the eye and adnexa, and 51 horses anaesthetised for splint bone excision were reviewed. Fifty-three percent of the horses anaesthetised for eye enucleation moved during surgery which was significantly more frequent than in the other groups (P = 0.001). The incidence of moving was significantly reduced by use of an anaesthetic gas analyser for monitoring (P = 0.001). Transient hypertension was measured in 6 horses during removal of the eye. One horse experienced a momentary decrease in heart rate from 36 to 26 beats/min at the start of surgery involving a mass on the third eyelid. The incidence of unsatisfactory recovery from anaesthesia involving multiple attempts to stand was significantly greater after ocular surgery than after splint bone excision (P = 0.036). Our conclusions were 1) the oculocardiac reflex was not active in these horses undergoing ocular surgery, 2) increased attention must be paid to provision of analgesia and adequate depth of anaesthesia, which may be facilitated by use of an anaesthetic gas analyser and 3) horses were at greater risk for unsatisfactory recoveries from anaesthesia after ocular surgery. 相似文献
