Abstract

To examine the distribution of DTPA‐extractable Fe, Zn, and Cu in clay, silt, and sand fractions; surface soils were collected from cultivated fields of North Dakota, South Dakota, West Virginia, Iowa, Ohio, and Illinois. Clay, silt, and sand fractions were separated after sonic dispersion of soil water suspension and analyzed for DTPA‐extractable Fe, Zn, and Cu. In general, clay had the highest and sand the lowest amount of DTPA‐extractable metals. Consequently, clay had the highest and sand the lowest intensity and capacity factors for these metals since DTPA micronutrient test measures both these factors.  相似文献

Abstract

The ammonium acetate (NH4OAc)‐EDTA soil phosphorus (P) extraction method was compared to either the Bray‐1 soil P extraction method for non‐calcareous soils or the Olsen soil P extraction method for calcareous soils to predict com and wheat plant tissue P concentration and grain yield responses. The NH4OAc‐EDTA method predicted yield and tissue P concentration responses to P fertilizer applications more accurately than the Olsen method at three of five sites. Both the Bray‐1 and NH4OAc‐EDTA methods were successful in predicting corn and wheat yield responses to P fertilizer applications in non‐ calcareous soils in many locations. However, a direct comparison of extracted soil P levels showed that the NH4OAc‐EDTA method extracted soil P at levels which were more closely related to the Bray‐1 method than the Olsen method.  相似文献

Abstract

The extraction of a field‐moist soil with DTPA will result in a level of extractable iron (Fe) lower than that of the air‐dried soil. Soil gas‐phase carbon dioxide (CO2) levels may be considerably higher than ambient atmospheric levels, especially in wet soils in the field. This study was undertaken to determine whether gas‐phase CO2 level influences the quantity of Fe extracted by DTPA. Three moist calcareous soils were incubated for 21 days, each at three different partial pressures of CO2, after which the moist soils were extracted with DTPA. A sample of each soil was also air dried, and was subsequently extracted with DTPA. In each case, DTPA‐extractable Fe from the moist sample was lower than that from the air‐dried sample; however, DTPA‐extractable Fe increased with increasing CO2 partial pressure of in the moist soils. DTPA‐extractable Fe concentration for a given soil following air drying was not significantly influenced by the CO2 partial pressure during incubation of the originally field‐moist soil. DTPA‐extract pH of the moist soils followed the same trend as soil‐solution pH (i.e., as CO2 concentration of the soil gas‐phase increased, soil solution pH and DTPA extract pH both decreased); however, the slope of the pH versus log PCO2 curve was less pronounced in the DTPA extract due to the buffering capacity of the triethanolamine. From this study, it is concluded that elevated soil gas‐phase CO2 partial pressure does not contribute to the lower level of DTPA‐extractable Fe observed when the extraction is performed on a field‐moist versus an air‐dried soil; increased CO2 partial pressure actually resulted in a slight increase in concentration of DTPA‐extractable Fe obtained from a field‐moist soil.  相似文献

Abstract

The variability in corn yield responses to applications of Zn fertilizer appears to be associated with several complex soil and climatic factors that affect the availability of endogenous soil Zn to the crop under specific conditions. Among the soil chemical properties that influence availability of endogenous Zn are soil pH, organic matter content, and extractable P. Over a period of several years, soil and plant analysis data were collected from 54 field experiments, field trials, and diagnostic visits to producer's fields. These data were subjected to multiple regression analysis, resulting in an equation: Znleaf = 37.14 + 1.513 Znst ‐4.04 pHst ‐ 1.791 ln(Pst/100) where Znst, pHst, and Pst were 0.1N HC1 extractable soil Zn (kg/ha), 1:1 soil‐water pH, and Bray's 1 extractable soil P (kg/ha), respectively. These factors accounted for 67% of variation in leaf Zn, which was a large portion of the variability in Znleaf considering that climatic conditions, management levels, and varietal differences were uncontrolled in most instances. Using the previously published critical level in the leaf opposite and below the ear as 17 μg Zn/g, these data can be used to set required soil test levels of Zn at different levels of extractable P and soil pH. Inadequate levels of extractable Zn would range from 2.5 (at pH 6.0, P = 70 kg/ha) to, 9.5 kg/ha (at pH 7.5, P = 420 kg/ha).  相似文献

Abstract

Two soil tests commonly used to characterize the availability of soil phosphorus (P) are Bray P1 (B1) and Mehlich 3 (M3) extradants. The objective of this investigation was to compare M3‐ and B1‐extractable P levels in a Starr clay loam (fine‐loamy mixed thermic Fluventic Dystrochrepts) amended with relatively low to high surface applications of poultry litter (PL). The following eight treatments were applied to the soil for pasture renovation in 1991 and 1992: 1) a control, 2) P application as monocalcium phosphate [Ca(H2PO4)2‐H2O], 3) P application as Ca(H2PO4)2‐H2O and nitrogen (N) application as ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) and urea, and 4) five levels of poultry litter (PL) based on N content. The five P levels as PL were 56.6, 113.2, 169.8, 226.4, and 283.0 kg ha‐1 in 1991, and 49.2, 98.5, 147.7, 196.9, and 246.1 kg ha‐1 in 1992, respectively. Soil samples were obtained from the 0‐ to 5‐cm layer in the spring of 1992 and 1993 for extractable P determination. Levels of P extracted from all treatments by the M3 and B1 extractants were linearly correlated both years (r2=0.96 in 1991 and r2=0.99 in 1992). However, M3 extracted more P from the PL treatments, whereas B1 extracted more P from the control, P application, and N and P application treatments. Curvilinear relationships were obtained between P uptake and levels of either M3‐ or B1‐extractable P for the PL treatments (r2=0.713 for M3 and 0.663 for B1 in 1991 and r2=0.925 for M3 and 0.933 for B1 in 1992). These close relationships in 1992 between extractable P and uptake of P for the PL‐ treated soils indicate that both the B1 and M3 extractants could be used to evaluate excess P in PL‐amended soils.  相似文献

Both chloride (Cl) and sulphate (SO4) were found to impair the uptake of phosphorus (H232PO4) through the roots of potato in a hydroponically conducted experiment. Radioactive phosphorus (32P) was used as the marker. The presence of either Cl and SO4 alone in the nutrient solution made no difference on the impairment. Both ions also inhibited the long‐distance transport of P from roots to shoots. The inhibition by Cl was much greater than that by SO4, and increased with the concentration of Cl rising from 0 to 15.5 mM in solution.  相似文献

Abstract

Spatial variation of bicarbonate soil test phosphorus (P) and bicarbonate soil test potassium (K) was studied by measuring soil test values for 40 individual soil samples collected from random locations within eight uniform 100 m by 100 m field sites in south‐western Australia. In addition, for five of the sites, spatial variation of the three P sorption indices (ammonium oxalate extractable iron, ammonium oxalate extractable aluminum, and the P retention index) and of organic carbon (C) was measured for 20 individual soils samples. Spatial variation was found to be large, with coefficient of variation (CV) exceeding 20% in most cases, and 50% in some cases. It is therefore essential to collect an adequate number of soil samples from uniform areas in paddocks in order to provide a representative composite sample to measure the soil properties.  相似文献

Abstract

Soil phosphorus (P) deficiency is a constraint to crop production in many regions of sub‐Saharan Africa, which could be overcome through use of either soluble P fertilizer or sufficiently reactive phosphate rock (PR). A field study was conducted with corn (Zea mays L.) for three growing seasons (18 months) on a P‐deficient, acid soil in Kenya to compare a soluble P source (triple superphosphate, TSP) and relatively reactive Minjingu PR from Tanzania. In the 18 months following application of 250 kg P ha‐1, bicarbonate extractable inorganic soil P (Pi) was higher for application of TSP than PR, but Pi extracted with a mixed anion‐cation resin was comparable for TSP and PR. Inorganic P extracted by 0.1M NaOH, without prior extraction of resin and bicarbonate Pi, decreased during the 18 months following TSP application, but increased following PR application. After 18 months, about 7% of the added PR‐P remained as Ca‐bound P that was extracted with 1M HCl. The 1M HCl extractable P., however, underestimated residual PR‐P that gradually dissolved and supplied plant‐available P, as indicated by recovery of <40% of PR‐P added to soil in laboratory incubations even though PR solubility in HCl was >90%. Minjingu PR was an effective source of P for corn. Corn yields were comparable for TSP and PR, and the relative agronomic effectiveness of PR averaged 107% in Season 1 and 79% in Season 3. Anion resin and mixed anion‐cation resin appeared to be superior to bicarbonate and NaOH as a soil P test for use with both TSP‐ and PR‐treated soils.  相似文献

Abstract

A field experiment was conducted on an Aerie Haplaquept soil to study the effect of phosphorus (P) deficiency in soil on the P nutrition and yield of five modern varieties of rice, viz., Purbachi, BR1, BR3, BR14, and BR29, popular with the rice farmers of Bangladesh. Soil‐available P in the different plots of the experimental field varied widely, from 2.8 to 16.4 ppm. This plot to plot variation in soil‐available P content resulted from differences in the total amounts (0 to 480 kg ha‐1) of P the plots had received over a period of 8 years in a long‐term P fertilizer trial conducted previously in the same field. Phosphorus deficiency in soil drastically reduced the grain yield of all the rice varieties. In severely P deficient plots, where soil‐available P was around 3 ppm, the yield was less than 1 ton ha‐1 while in plots containing an adequate P level, i.e., >6 ppm, the yield was more than 41 ha‐1. Rice yield increased linearly with an increase in soil P content up to 6 ppm, and the highest grain yield for any variety, obtained at 6–7 ppm of soil‐available P leveled off at this point. Soil P deficiency not only decreased rice yield severely but also decreased P content in straw and grain drastically. However, differences among rice varieties were noted in P nutrition, particularly at low soil P levels. The rice varieties differed markedly also in respect of internal P efficiency. The BR29 showed the highest internal P efficiency both at low and high soil P levels. In all the rice varieties, internal P efficiency decreased with an increase in soil P levels.  相似文献

Rice grown on the organic soils of the Everglades is routinely fertilized with silicon (Si). The objective of this research was to investigate changes in nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentration in various plant parts in response to Si fertilization. Two cultivars were grown in lysimeters filled with low‐Si soil. Half the lysimeters were fertilized with calcium silicate to provide 2Mg Si ha‐1 and the other lysimeters remained unfertilized as a control. Nitrogen concentration decreased in all plant parts with Si fertilization. Phosphorus concentration increased with Si. Maturity was earlier in the Si fertilized rice.  相似文献

Abstract

The interaction of gamma‐irradiated sewage sludge, nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers on dry matter production, phosphorus concentration and phosphorus uptake of sorghum was examined. Three crops of sorghum were grown in the greenhouse in 19 1 plastic buckets. The phosphorus and sludge treatments were applied at the initiation of the experiment only. Nitrogen was applied to the corresponding nitrogen treatment pots before each of the three croppings.

There was a significant nitrogen x sewage interaction for dry matter production, phosphorus concentration and phosphorus uptake in each harvest. There was a significant phosphorus sewage sludge interaction in the first harvest for phosphorus uptake. All other possible interactions were not statistically significant. The 67 metric ton/ha sludge rate produced nearly the same yield as the nitrogen treatment. In the first harvest, sludge significantly increased plant phosphorus uptake from the fertilizer phosphorus. The phosphorus uptake in sorghum from 472 and 944 kg P/ha from the sludge treatments was comparable to that from 1299 and 2598 kg P/ha from triple superphosphate.  相似文献

Abstract

The responses of corn and soybean to seed‐placed fertilizer were compared over NaHCO3‐extractable soil phosphorus (P) levels ranging from 3 to 35 ppm in a two‐year experiment. Early season corn and soybean shoot‐P concentrations were increased with increasing soil test P and were increased with seed‐placed P regardless of soil test P, although the increases were greater for corn than soybean. Corn grain yield increased with increasing soil test P to a plateau level and increased with seed‐placed P regardless of soil test P. A side‐band (5 cm × 5 cm) application of 39 kg P ha‐1 at a low soil test P increased yield more (P<0.15) than application of 7 kg P ha‐1 with the seed. A side‐band application of 9 kg P ha‐1 at a medium soil P test did not increase yield. Soybean yield was increased with increasing soil test P one year out of two, but did not respond to seed‐placed P in either year. The yield response of corn was attributed to the increased P concentration prior to the 6‐leaf stage.  相似文献

Abstract

Soil test nutrient concentrations vary with depth, especially in perennial cropping systems where fertilizer is broadcast on the soil surface without incorporation. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of fertilizer rate and sampling depth on soil test phosphorus (P) and potassium (K), and P and K fertilizer recommendations for alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.). Five rates of P and K (0, 56, 112, 224, and 336 kg ha‐1 P2O5 and K2O) were broadcast on established alfalfa stands at three sites with different soil properties and tillage and fertilization histories. In separate plots at one site the same rates of P and K were also incorporated to a depth of 15 cm prior to seeding alfalfa. Soil samples were collected at depths of 0 to 10, 0 to 15, and 0 to 30 cm during the growing season. Fertilizer rates and soil sample depth affected soil test P and K at all sites. Relative to the 30‐cm sample depth, soil test values were higher in fertilized treatments with 10 and 15 cm sample depths due to the concentration of immobile P and K near the soil surface. Sample depths of 10 and 15 cm frequently resulted in lower P and K fertilizer recommendations than those of the 30‐cm depth. Sample depth is an important consideration in routine soil sampling for the purpose of making fertilizer recommendations. If research data used for developing soil test‐based fertilizer recommendation are obtained using a standard sampling depth, routine sampling must also be to the same depth.  相似文献

Abstract

Effect of incubation and microbial inhibition at field capacity level on changes in DTPA‐extractable Mn in acidic, neutral, and alkaline soils was examined. Incubation decreased and microbial inhibition increased the level of Mn in soils with high pH (>5.7) and high microbial activity. The change was apparently partially associated with microbes since the level of Mn did not change in soils with low microbial activity and/or low pH.  相似文献

Abstract

A long‐term (1968–1987) field study using corn‐soybean in rotation was conducted to compare the effect of rock phosphate (RP) and superphosphate (SP) at two lime levels on crop yield, soil available phosphorus (P) as Bray P‐1 (0.025M HCl + 0.03M NH4F) and Bray P‐2 (0.1M HCl + 0.03M NH4F) tests, and on the relationship between crop yield and available P tests. Treatments included a control, application of RP and SP ranging from 12 to 96 kg P2O5 ha‐1 yr‐1, and combinations of RP with SP or sulphur at various rates. The RP was applied once in 1968 at 8 times the annual rate while SP was applied annually until 1985. Corn and soybean yields increased with P application, more with SP than with RP. Bray P‐l and Bray P‐2 increased linearly with the amount of P applied as SP or RP. A significant correlation (r > 0.64) was found between corn yield and Bray P‐2 at low lime level with both P sources. In contrast, a poor correlation (r < 0.50) was found between soybean yield and soil P tests. Both RP and SP were effective sources of P fertilizers for corn on soils treated with a small amount of lime compared with a large amount of lime. Under low lime the Bray P‐2 accounted for 41% and 66% variability in com yield with applied RP and SP, respectively. On the other hand, Bray P‐1 was only of value when SP was the source of P.  相似文献

Aluminum toxicity, associated with soil acidity, is a major growth‐limiting factor for plants in many parts of the world. More precise criteria are needed for the identification of potential Al toxicity in acid soils. The objective of the current study was to relate the acid soil tolerances of two wheat cultivars to three characteristics of an acid Tatum subsoil (clayey, mixed, thermic, typic Hapludult): pH in a 1:1 soil to water suspension; KCl‐extractable Al; and degree of Al saturation. Aluminum‐tolerant ‘BH 1146’ (Brazil) and Al‐sensitive ‘Sonora 63’ (Mexico) wheat cultivars were grown in greenhouse pots of soil treated with CaCO3 to establish final soil pH levels of 4.1, 4.6, 4.7, 4.9, 5.2 and 7.3. Soil Al, Ca and Mg were extracted with 1 N KCl, and Al saturation was calculated as KCl‐Al/KCl Al + Ca + Mg%.

Within the soil pH range of 4.1 to 4.9, BH 1146 tops and roots produced significantly more dry matter than did those of Sonora 63; however, at pH 5.2 and 7.3, the top and root yields of the two cultivars were not significantly different. Significant cultivar differences in yield occurred over a range of 36 to 82% saturation of the Tatum soil. Graphs of relative top or root yields against soil pH, KCl‐extractable Al and Al saturation indicated that the two cultivars could be separated for tolerance to Tatum soil under the following conditions: pH less than 5.2 (1:1 soil‐water); KCl‐Al levels greater than 2 c mole kg‐1 and Al saturations greater than 20%. Results demonstrated that any soil test used to predict Al toxicity in acid soils must take into account the Al tolerances of the plant cultivars involved.  相似文献

Abstract

Loss‐on‐ignition (LOI) is a simple method for determining ash content, and by reciprocation, organic matter content of compost and manure. However, reported ignition temperatures and heating times for LOI measurements vary widely, and this brings into question the accuracy of one specific combination of ignition temperature and heating time over another. This study examined the effect of 42 temperature‐heating time combinations (six ignition temperatures from 400 to 650°C in 50°C increments by seven heating times of 1, 2, 8, 12, 16, 20, and 24‐h) on the ash content of a finished compost and a fresh manure. The experiment included the 550°C for 2‐h method recommended in Test Methods for Evaluation of Compost and Composting. The magnitude of the decrease in ash content due to increase in temperature was not consistent across all heating times. For example, after a 1‐h heating time for compost, ash content was 75.7% at 400°C and 67.5% at 650°C, compared to 69.6% at 400°C and 66.8% at 650°C after 24‐h. Irrespective of heating time, an ignition temperature of 400°C overestimated ash content for both compost and manure compared to the TMECC method. The TMECC method with its moderate temperature and short heating time requirement could reduce energy costs without affecting ash content results.  相似文献

Abstract

Overwintering soil temperature may influence crop response to phosphorus (P) and indices of P availability in the humid, temperate, transitional climate of Tennessee. The effects of P fertilization and soil incubation temperature on sorghumsudangrass (Sorghum bicolor x S. Sudanese) grown on a Typic Hapludalf was investigated in a greenhouse study. In order to determine the effect of temperature on P availability, soils were incubated prior to cropping, at a constant temperature of 6°C or an average diurnal temperature of 24 and 36°C. Reagent grade Ca(H2PO4)2.H2O was used as the fertilizer source and applied at rates of 0, 10, 20, and 30 mg P kg‐1 for the first test and 0, 20, 40, 60, and 80 mg P kg 1 for the second test. Critical P concentration in the shoots for optimum yield was found to be 1.3 mg g‐1, corresponding to soil solution and labile P concentrations of 5.5 μmol L‐1 and 167 μg g‐1, respectively. Optimum yield occurred for applications of >65 mg P kg‐1 and was unaffected by soil incubation temperature. Applied P rates affected extractable P by five chemical extractants (Bray I, Bray II, Mehlich I, Mehlich III, and Mississippi), but soil incubation temperature had no affect. The extractants, however, were poorly correlated to plant P uptake and no one extractant appeared preferable to the others as an indicator of P availability.  相似文献

Abstract

This study was to determine the effect of soil amendments on the fractionation of selenium (Se) using incubation experiments under simulated upland and flooded conditions. The treatments were as follows: 1) control [soil + sodium selenite (Na2SeO3) (1 mg Se kg‐1)]; 2) control + calcium carbonate (CaCO3) (5 g kg‐1); 3) control + alfalfa (40 g kg‐1); and 4) control + CaCO3 (5 g kg‐1) + alfalfa (40 g kg‐1). After a 90‐day incubation, soil was sampled and fractionated into five fractions: 1) potassium sulfate (K2SO4)‐soluble fraction (available to plants); 2) potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KH2PO4)‐exchangeable fraction (potentially available); 3) ammonium hydroxide (NH3H2O)‐soluble fraction (potentially available); 4) hydrochloric acid (HCl)‐extractable fraction (unavailable); and 5) residual fraction (unavailable). Compared with the control, CaCO3 increased the K2SO4 fraction at the expense of the NH3H2O fraction. Alfalfa increased both the K2SO4 and residual fractions but reduced the KH2PO4 and NH3H2O fractions. The CaCO3‐alfalfa treatment had a similar effect to the alfalfa treatment alone. The comparison between the upland and flooded conditions showed that the flooded condition generally increased the residual fraction and decreased the potentially‐available fractions. In general, CaCO3 was a better amendment because it not only increased the available fraction but also maintained the potentially available fractions at a high level. The application of Na2SeO3 and use of appropriate soil amendments can improve Se availability in soil.  相似文献
