A 6.5-year-old male rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) was presented with acute paraplegia following a surgical procedure. During surgery, he experienced an acute hypotensive episode that required 3 hours of supportive therapy before hemodynamic stability was restored. Paraplegia remained unchanged until euthanasia 72 hours later. At necropsy, spinal cord segments T10-S3 had acute, massive panmedullary necrosis, which involved most of the central and middle spinal cord, sparing the peripheral white matter. Additional lesions included arterial border zone necrosis of the brain, centrilobular hepatic necrosis, and proximal renal tubular necrosis. The histologic findings of central spinal cord necrosis with a preserved rim of white matter is consistent with severely decreased flow in the anterior spinal artery. Such lesions can result from episodes of generalized hypoperfusion. Possible factors contributing to the hypotensive episode in this case included the addition of xylazine to ketamine and atropine in the preanesthetic medication, positioning during anesthesia, and decreased blood pressure during surgery.  相似文献

Hemophagocytic syndrome (HPS) is a macrophage hyperactivation disorder triggered by disrupted T-cell macrophage cytokine interaction. HPS has been reported in humans, dogs, cats, and cattle, and it is infrequent and poorly characterized in animals. A 16-year-old male rhesus macaque was euthanized because of severe pancytopenia, including nonregenerative anemia (hematocrit = 5.5%), neutropenia (0.29 K/μl), and thrombocytopenia (21 K/μl). Bone marrow was hypocellular with normal maturation, myeloid hypoplasia, and few megakaryocytes. There were numerous morphologically normal macrophages (12% of nucleated cells), with 6% of nucleated cells being hemophagocytic macrophages in the bone marrow. Serology was negative, but polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry were positive for simian retrovirus type 2. Blood and bone marrow findings were consistent with HPS. Cytopenias are common in simian retrovirus-infected macaques, but HPS has not been reported. An association between simian retrovirus infection and HPS is undetermined, but retrovirus-associated HPS has been observed in humans.  相似文献

Endometriosis is defined as the presence of endometrial tissue outside the uterine cavity and is one of the most common reproductive abnormalities encountered in women as well as Old World primates. The majority of endometriosis cases in Old World primates occur within the abdominal cavity, with spread to extraabdominal sites considered to be a rare event. A 19-year-old multiparous female rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) presented to necropsy for difficulty breathing and weight loss. Grossly, the animal had marked abdominal endometriosis and severe hemoabdomen and hemothorax, the latter of which was accompanied by marked pleural fibrosis. Histologic examination confirmed the abdominal endometriosis and also revealed numerous uterine glands and stroma embedded within the pleural fibrosis. Rafts of endometrial tissue were present within pulmonary lymphatics and the tracheobronchial lymph nodes. Immunohistochemically, all ectopic endometrial tissue had varying degrees of positive immunoreactivity to cytokeratin, vimentin, progesterone and estrogen receptors, and calretinin but was negative for desmin and carcinoembryonic antigen. Pleural endometriosis is an extremely rare manifestation of endometriosis in nonhuman primates. This case report emphasizes lymphatic spread as a likely mechanism for extrauterine endometriosis.  相似文献

Six cases of fatal myocarditis associated with encephalomyocarditis virus occurred over a 14-month period in a group of outdoor-housed juvenile rhesus macaques. All animals were younger than 3 years of age and died or were euthanized following acute onset of dyspnea or pulmonary effusion (3 of 6) or were found dead without premonitory signs (3 of 6). Gross findings included pulmonary congestion (6 of 6), variable degrees of pleural effusion (4 of 6), multifocal pale tan foci throughout the myocardium (3 of 6), hepatomegaly and hepatic congestion (3 of 6), and pericardial effusion (1 of 6). Histologically, affected myocardium was infiltrated multifocally by lymphoplasmacytic and histiocytic inflammation admixed with necrotic and degenerate myofibers and infrequent mineralization (6 of 6). Pulmonary edema was present in all animals. Encephalomyocarditis virus was confirmed in 6 of 6 hearts by immunohistochemistry, and virus was isolated from one case by polymerase chain reaction. Sequencing of virus isolated from 1 affected animal indicated infection with a novel encephalomyocarditis virus. Encephalomyocarditis virus should be considered as a differential etiology in outbreaks of myocarditis and pulmonary edema in juvenile primates.  相似文献

Chemotactic responses of isolated peripheral blood neutrophils from rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) were studied, using a micropore filter method. Cell migration toward zymosan-activated serum was similar to that of human cells, whereas the response to N-formyl methionyl leucyl phenylalanine (FMLP) was weaker than was that in human cells, requiring higher concentrations of FMLP for maximal migration. Optimal FMLP concentrations for attraction of rhesus neutrophils and human neutrophils were 5.0 X 10(-7)M and 1.0 X 10(-8)M, respectively. The chemotactic responses of the 2 neutrophils to complement (zymosan-activated serum) were similar. However, rhesus neutrophils required a higher concentration of the formyl peptide, FMLP, for maximal migratory response.  相似文献

Multifocal submucosal stromal tumors were diagnosed in a 5.5-year-old rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) experimentally infected with simian immunodeficiency virus, strain SIVsmE660, and CD4+ T cell depleted. The animal was negative for simian retroviruses, SRV-1, -2, and -5. Polymerase chain reaction analysis of DNA from tumor and spleen tissue revealed abundant, preferential presence of retroperitoneal fibromatosis herpesvirus, the macaque homologue of the Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (human herpesvirus-8), in the tumors. This was corroborated by demonstration of viral latent nuclear antigen-1 in the nuclei of a majority of the spindeloid tumor cells. Low levels of an additional macaque herpesvirus, rhesus rhadinovirus, were also detected in the spleen and tumor tissues. The spindeloid cells labeled positively for vimentin and CD117 but were negative for CD31, CD68, desmin, and smooth muscle cell actin. Collectively, these findings suggest a relation to but not absolute identity with simian mesenchymoproliferative disorders (MPD) or typical gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs).  相似文献

In primates, little has been reported about malignant mesenchymal uterine tumours. A case of a spontaneous metastasising uterine sarcoma in a 17-year-old rhesus monkey is presented. Clinically, transient abdominal pain, spasms, nausea, anaemia, a firm uterus and bloody vaginal discharge were noted. In a diagnostic laparoscopy, both massive adhesions in the lesser pelvis and 10 ml of ascites fluid were detected. In necropsy, in addition to peritonitis with massive adhesions, a cauliflower-shaped, irregular, tough, greyish-white uterine tumour was seen. Two cherry-sized tumour metastases were noticed in the greater omentum. In histology, both in the uterus and the metastases, a sarcoma with a low amount of connective tissue and well-differentiated cell nuclei was identified.  相似文献

An 8-year-old male rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) died following a 6-day illness consisting of progressive depression, anorexia, labored abdominal breathing, coughing, and tachypnea. Gross necropsy findings included severe multifocal (miliary) granulomatous pneumonia, granulomatous splenitis, and multifocal cerebral abscesses. Histologic examination revealed 10-15-microm broad-based budding organisms within pyogranulomatous inflammatory lesions in the lung, tracheobronchial lymph node, brain, spleen, and liver. The distribution of extrapulmonary lesions was intermediate between that described for dogs and that described for humans. These findings were consistent with blastomycosis, which is previously unreported in nonhuman primates.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To develop an aerosol exposure method for induction of brucellosis in rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta). ANIMALS: 10 adult rhesus macaques. PROCEDURE: 8 rhesus macaques were challenge exposed with 10(2) to 10(5) colony-forming units of Brucella melitensis 16M by use of an aerosol-exposure technique, and 2 served as control animals. All macaques were euthanatized 63 days after challenge exposure. Gross and microscopic lesions, bacterial burden in target organs, and histologic changes in tissues were evaluated. RESULTS: Grossly, spleen weights were increased in exposed macaques, compared with spleen weights in control macaques. Histologically, there was inflammation in the liver, kidneys, spleen, testes, and epididymides in exposed macaques. The spleen and lymph nodes had increased numbers of lymphohistiocytic cells. Morphometrically, the spleen also had an increased ratio of white pulp to red pulp. Areas of hepatitis and amount of splenic white pulp increased with increasing exposure dose. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Pathologic findings in rhesus macaques after aerosol exposure to B melitensis are similar to those observed in humans with brucellosis. IMPACT FOR HUMAN MEDICINE: These results may aid in the development of a vaccine against brucellosis that can be used in humans.  相似文献
